The dog world is so allergic to “management” as a concept like “my dogs are fighting!” Separate them. “My dog runs off!” Leash them. “My dog is aggressive!” Muzzle him. “My dog destroys my house!” Put him in a secure area he can’t destroy stuff in. It is literally that easy.

Training for the win big time today.

I was loading up a dog reactive dog into my car crate and while I was unhooking him a person with two dogs came around the corner behind us. Reactive dog saw them first, lunged at them, and in perfect bad timing the leash came free and my hand slipped off his collar.

Everything happened in just a few seconds but it felt like time slowed to a crawl. The reactive dog was beelining for the two dogs and I knew if I panicked and chased him he would reach them before I could get to him. So instead I said his name in a calm, clear voice and gave him his recall cue. Dog stopped at his name and trotted back to me at the recall as I came up to meet him.

I secured the dog in the crate and apologized to the person. They were understandably shaken but breathlessly told me they were glad the dog has training.

Me too.

We've been doing lots of work on engagement around triggers (dogs) where we say the dog's name and reward for looking at us. We've also been doing lots of recalls off of high value toys. I am so glad the training held. Because no matter how good the management is, it will inevitably fail at some point.

And in case anyone was wondering, I did not scold the dog. As soon as he was secure in the crate I shoved food in through the door and quietly praised him. Because as tense as it was, he did come when called and it's important to reward that.

So yeah, training for the win today.

I've got to say, I've been doing a lot of research on Italy recently and I literally can't stop thinking about your boys. I'm over here trying to read about whatever Crusade and my brain is just a constant loop of "isn't Machete a cardinal? And Vasco was from like Verona, right?" Not super conducive to learning anything, but I am enjoying myself and thought you should know.

I'd argue that getting invested in your characters and their stories and having to do background research for them is actually a great way to accumulate knowledge about various subjects. Often it's stuff you probably would never get around to reading about otherwise. I'm not saying it's always information you'll have many practical uses for, but learning about new things is fun and it's beneficial to you and your brain in the long run.

Vasco is from Florence actually! It's usually considered to be the birthplace and the main hub of the entire Renaissance movement. Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Michelangelo lived and influenced there and Dante Alighieri (author of The Divine Comedy/Dante's Inferno) was florentine as well, albeit he lived several centuries prior to them.

Bad news: That joke post about including Reset + Orchid is definitely not canon. (I legit got sad thinking about Reset being in a universe where Orchid isn't- because their stories are so so intertwined- but Nightmare 100% would NOT risk the whole twins exploding Error's soul thing.)

Good news: This means I COULD include Kane (Reset's older brother who usually dies in timelines where Reset is born) and use it to develope his character a bit more! Also! Perhaps a Blue × Dream kiddo is finally in the stars for me to design?

An update on new yard for miss jellybean.... SHE LOVES IT 😭 she gets to sniff, run, and play in her private space without having to worry about mean reactive dogs from our old apartment 🥺 It's sooo nice to just sit outside while vibing and playing with her 😭

would you do bird hunting with Aurora given the opportunity? (I dont follow anyone who does hunting with their dogs and it would be interesting to see!)

I'm back and forth on it honestly. Ideally yeah, I'd love to give her the opportunity to hunt and be fulfilled that way. But there are a couple of things I'm struggling with:

I don't have access to training birds myself, nor the knowledge (or desire) to go at training her seriously alone.

Most gundog trainers (incl. my local brittany person who's been helping me out) expect you to go all in, birds should be your priority over all else (including general good dog manners).

Currently, pointing dog training in North America tends towards "make dogs bird obsessed -> introduce gunfire -> reign in the dogs so they're steady". The problems with this (for me) is that I don't want a bird obsessed dog at all and I don't want to use the pressure expected/required for "reigning it back in".

I had a really demoralizing experience trying to learn more about shotgun sizing and I'm not keen to try again.

So in conclusion, maybe but probably not to a serious extent.

nah, I’m not interested in breeding. Kep gets to keep his balls until he’s at least two, and beyond that as long as they are not causing any behavior or health issues. if he’s a jackass or otherwise annoying to manage beyond my capability, snip snip.

Louisiana governor signs new law on hunting dogs to track mortally wounded deer

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has signed a groundbreaking new bill recognizing the importance of using hunter-dogs to recover ‘mortally wounded’ deer.

Act 272 now allows licensed hunters to use dogs to track down mortally wounded deer and permits the use of handguns ‘no longer than six inches’ on these wounded animals.

Under the new law, only one dog per tracking party is allowed in the pursuit of a wounded deer. However, a second dog can be used for training purposes. Tracking dogs must either be on a handheld leash or equipped with a GPS tracking collar. If the deer is found alive, the hunter may use a centerfire handgun with a caliber between .25 and .45.

Please note that this law does not apply to hunting in the Louisiana Department of Wildlife Fisheries Management Areas. Additionally, hunters can only pursue a mortally wounded deer onto private property if they have obtained verbal or written permission from the landowner.

Act 272 will take effect on August 1, 2024.
