This isn’t the type of book I normally post about, but I recently finished Space Opera & it was an absolute joy. If you like funny, absurd sci-fi drama with high stakes, then pretty please read this book. If you’re inclined towards audiobooks, Heath Miller’s reading of it is so good.

I caught up to Re: Dracula today & I must confess that when I heard Quincey P. Morris’ voice lines — oh lord — I had to stop what I was doing, place a hand over my heart, & just listen.
In my previous readings and listenings of Dracula, Quincey always struck me as a silly character. Don’t get me wrong. He has just as much depth & personality as the others in the crew of light, but Stoker’s attempt at Texas slang along with Quincey’s rootin’ tootin’ & shootin’ attitude make him a funny guy for a modern American reader such as myself.
But in Re: Dracula, he comes to life. I cannot overemphasize what an amazing job Giancarlo Herrera does voicing him. Lines that seemed silly on the page are turned into speech that flows as naturally as a conversation overheard at the grocery store. Not only is Quincey realistic, but the charisma he exudes is absolutely captivating. I’ve always been a big Quincey fan, but this Quincey is by far my favorite Quincey.

If Melville had said “Ishmael & Queequeg are boyfriends,” that would have been less gay than whatever this is

Jekyll & Hyde Weekly just started today & I am reminded how ridiculous (affectionate) this story is:

I’m going to reread & annotate a copy of John Polidori’s “The Vampyre” that I printed the other day. I might not liveblog it much or at all, but I’ll show off any fun annotations afterwards for sure :D👍

A non-classic lit fandom friend is reading Dracula (if you’re reading this, hi Sean) and occasionally texts me his opinions as he reads. Today he sent me this:

YEAH! “Ligeia” is yet another favorite. I love this lady! Come back from someone else’s grave! Don’t just haunt your former lover as a ghost. Will yourself back to life.

Hm. “Eleonora” wasn’t bad. It had a cute ending about moving on from grief and past love, but overall it wasn’t my favorite. Onto “Ligeia” now.
