Midnight kitchen
The foyer of his house smelled appetizing the familiar sounds of frying pans and the soup boiling made his mouth water after a long day of business affairs he clearly anticipated of what’s being made. Sylus sees her standing in the kitchen eyes completely focused as she chops some green onions using her favorite wooden chopping board he secretly smiled to himself as it gave him pleasure that she uses one of his gifts.
One of the favorite things about this pretty little chef of his is that she cleans as she goes he appreciated the fact that the area she worked at not a mess was in sight and the sink was almost dish-free. He adored the way she was organized without burning a single meal and how she’s meticulously careful with sharp objects.
He made his presence known by clearing his throat as she was now stirring the pot on the stove.
She looked up at his gaze and welcomed him with a smile. His heart swelled at the sight before him he closed the distance between them, standing by her side. He leaned against the counter watching her work the aroma of the food getting stronger.
“So what are we having for tonight?” he asked
“I’m making you a traditional korean dish called kimchi jjigae and dakgangjeong for dinner,” she responded with a smile “here taste this.”
He took a spoonful of the dish savoring the flavors across his palate the spicy and fermented kimchi added a rich and flavorful kick while the soft yet pungent kimchi provided a comforting warmth - back then his former chefs would prepare Sylus a medium rare steak, a veal or an italian pasta with meatballs on it to add some red meat for his diet however this one tasted like home.
“Mmm… this is delicious in fact let me try some more.” She gave him another clean spoon she liked the fact that he came back for seconds.
“I’m starving shall we go eat?” He usually doesn’t ask his chefs to accompany him for dinner and it’s the first time he saw she was holding back. “Oh, well it’s almost done sir I’ll serve it once you settle at the table.” Given her professional response he nodded but wasn’t satisfied with her answer.
He went to the dining area where he sees the table completely set for one. He frowned a little as if it’s almost reminding him how alone he was. Candle lights, table napkins, clean utensils and a clean plate all waiting for him. He went back to the kitchen immediately realizing that he should be with her eating beside him instead. He sat down at the kitchen island where she promptly prepared basic place mats.
He smiled at her once again giving her the impression that this is where he decided to dine she quickly understood as if they were of one mind. He watches as she sets the food down on the counter the bowl of kimchi jjigae and the plate of dakgangjeong looked tempting.
“Looks good, chef.” She nodded pleased with his approval.
“Dig in.”
He didn’t need to be told twice he began taking a spoonful of the kimchi jjigae first the flavors were just as delicious as the first couple of bites the spice was well balanced out with other seasonings providing the dish with a perfect symphony of taste.
“This is really good,” he said as he took a small bite of the dakgangjeong appreciating the flavor from the crispy chicken coated with sweet and tangy sauce. “You have really outdone yourself with this one.”
She giggled at his compliment, never before in his entire life felt his heart warmed more in that blissful moment.
“You really enjoy cooking don’t you?” He asked still eating
“I do.”
He nodded appreciating her passion. “It shows in your work,” he complimented. “You put so much effort into the dishes you make its impressive.”
“Thank you, Sylus.” a light blush appeared in her cheeks
Bingo.
“Why don’t you join me? There’s more than enough for one person.” He watched her take off her apron and folded it placing it neatly on the counter his gaze softened as she made her way to his side silently grateful that she didn’t fight it anymore she ate right beside him taking a comfortable silence.
He felt like this is their new beginning and when the time comes that she would let him court her he’d be more than happy to settle down in a heartbeat.

How does one actually build a useful repository of recipes for different cuisines? Like, I have the Silver Spoon which is a pretty good cross section of Italian cooking. I know more than enough variations of the typical french mother sauces to get the principles without a need for a recipe. I know from various Euro cuisines particular flavors that pair well I could build a dish around (like, I could make a goat cheese and caramelized onion soup without the need of someone telling me a recipe). I don't have any such data sets for other cuisines, and you know the recipe website world is a hell scape.
Tried and true method is: Cook often, try new things, and save it if you like it.
Get a blank notebook (or a 3-ring binder) and collect recipes yourself as you try them. You can write recipes in by hand, or print them off & punch for the 3-ring binder.
Go to restaurants which serve food you want to explore, and take a picture of the food, record the name of it on the menu, and note some of the ingredients that you can identify in it.
If you live in a small town with not many places that serve 'foreign' food nearby, get off google. Use DuckDuckGo or Brave as a search engine. They have very few ads and the search algorithm prefers when you get to the point in your recipe blog, rather than dicking around with your life story.
Do a little tour on your world map. Focus on countries, search for food from that country, then search for specific kinds of food from that country. Search for things like "Authentic Turkish Stewed Chicken" "Traditional Brazillian Goat Recipe" "Hong Kong Street Food Recipe" "Collection of Taiwan Recipes" "25 amazing Korean dishes" "10 best Cajun Soul Food Recipes" "Dominican Republic Cuisine Recipes"
Go watch cooking tiktoks that aren't european-centric; go out of your way to find them.
Go down a list of spices and pick one you've never tried before. Look up where it's traditionally used, and try to find some dishes that use that spice!
Go to your Local Library and dig into their cookbook section. Every library has one! Look for cookbooks focused on cuisines you don't know yet, and try those recipes!
If you're cool spending money on this, go to Half Price Books or other book-reselling stores where you can find cook books at really low prices. Again, explore the cuisines you're not familiar with.
If you have grocery stores for other cultures near you, go into their grocery! Check out what spices have a shitload of different brands on display, and pick one at random. Seek out a recipe that uses that new spice you just bought.
And remember: Write that shit down!
You can always have a little guide at the front or back of your recipe collection that explains different spice blends, or explains key sauces, or anything else!
You can keep a little guide on how roasting spices changes them, and your experiments with that.
You can keep a list of bread recipes, or cooking hacks like how to make really good naan without a woodfire grill.

Personally, I'm forgetful. I forget sites exist, forget logins, and lose passwords all the time. I have about a hundred recipe collections across about as many websites, and I know where like, 3 of them are right now. Many of those websites have gone down, and my lists are lost forever.
The book of recipe & food-tips collection I've kept & used the longest - my Food Grimoire - is a physical item that I can misplace in my house but never truly lose. It can't have its server crash or website maintenance suddenly be abandoned and blip out of existence.

Ra Min's children 🌸
Just a quick heads up ─ Roku and Ta Min are a t4t couple in my very own book. Ta Min is Korean, Roku is Filipino.
Roku comes from a political clan called Del Rosario which stood for 'of the rosary' in Spanish and Portuguese.
Ta is from a noble clan called the Min, which means 'sharp-minded' or' quick response'.
Questions or headcanons about them is greatly appreciative!
Oldest Daughter (Firebender) [16]: Seo-Yeon ─ Ta was the one who gave her name where Roku is still resting peacefully. When Roku finally woke up from his slumber, Ta asked if the name is suitable to which Roku agrees warmly. Seo alone means 'felicitous omen' or 'auspicious,' however if combined with Yeon, both means 'beautiful.'
She took after Ta Min's profession, becoming a diplomat as well. But after her father's death, she quitted the job to cake care of her mother. Knowing that Ta may not express it verbally, it can be tell that she needs help to dealt with this kind of pain.
Laidback and levelheaded, is stern when the circumstances are needed.
First-Born Son (Non-bender) [11]: Andrés ─ It means 'manly' or 'brave' which is a name originated from Spanish. However, Andrés is a name that symbolizes bravery the most. Its a name that has been given to him by Roku and oh boy.. Andrés does take his name seriously.
He inherited his father's carelessness for his well-being. Up to you to decide whether is that a good thing or a bad thing.
Was rowdy and full of surprises, while he does become respectful and understanding growing up - he was like his parents younger selves, just wanting to have fun and goof off. (By goofing off, I mean almost sending his parents into an early grave.)
Second-born Daughter (Non-bender) [9]: Adhika ─ A name that means 'honorable.' It's a unique and traditional filipino name. However, Adhika made herself up a nickname called 'Rina.' Aside from Ra Min, 'Rina' is a shorter version of their ship name! It's an inside joke between her, and the family.
During the 100 year old war, the playful subriquet slowly becomes her new name as a way to not be acknowledged as the Avatar's daughter.
She's a former vigilante spy, taking after her father and mother's profession.
Youngest Son (Firebender) [7]: Hyuk ─ In korean, it is mostly associated 'bright' synonyms. Mainly because of how his eyes are twinkling when he first opened them. It awes the parents wholeheartedly. Hyuk is born deaf, needing extra attention from both Roku and Ta Min. But overall, a really sweet boy.
He is observant and is quick-witted, figuring out the dots easily. While communication is definitely an option, sometimes it's not always the case on his behalf.
At first, he degrades himself for being born with a disability. He thought he dragged everyone down. With enough reassurance and love from the family that he isn't a burden, he accepted the fact that this is the true him.
Roku and Ta Min would take turns on naming their kids, while Roku only cares about the children's general health and is loved in any shape and form - he cherish the fact that how Ta Min took her time to name these little goobers, and put so much thought onto them. They had their fun approving and disapproving other names, even have their own little banters with each other while their babies are asleep soundly. Despite the pain that Roku still felt, he'd be fully relaxed and safe in the arms of his lover. Ta Min makes sure that Roku gets a checkup or two if his health is declining, sickly worried for him and its justified.
This took such a long time!! I was researching left and right in my tabs and everything, I even doubt what am I naming these children 😭. I tried giving them a little flavor other than simply giving them names. The Ra Min's children played a huge part during the war, which is another story.
My brain is terribly FRIED.

Based on my previous post on astrological placements that show an interest in food and cooking, here’s a selection of specific cuisines and food items based on the 2nd house sign:

One of my Saturnalia presents finally came in the mail last night :) These are Yaupon, formerly commonly cultivated in this area but now incredibly rare. You can toast the leaves and then boil them and it makes a drink something like black tea or coffee, which people used to call the Black Drink (I've yet to learn the muskoke word for this.) I'll be keeping these little babies inside until they're bigger because I want to make sure they all live, with their help I hope to never buy coffee or tea again. It actually tastes exactly like black tea, but has more caffeine. You can buy it online from small local farms, which I definitely recommend, but you have to boil the leaves for about 10 or 15 minutes at least (you can go longer without it getting bitter but there's a point of diminishing returns.) People saying to steep it like eurasian tea are liars, that's not the traditional way. I think it goes very well with our friend heles-hvtke (panax americana) who I have on the porch. Unlike panax ginseng, its Korean cousin you may all be familiar with, heles hvtke has an incredibly sharp earthy flavor, kind of like getting punched in the face by a carrot. I guess the Korean kind tastes the same but with less power. It's excellent for heart health however, and since I've been using it daily I haven't experienced any of the circulation issues I usually associate with winter.

We have quite a few roses as well, my cousin and I both have very severe eczema and I've been buying some embarrassingly expensive soap for about 10 years because it's the only thing I can use. She plans to get into making soap the old way, and we'll be making our own rosewater for it.

Oh boy! Let's dive in
♒ - cooking/food headcanon
Radar:
Radar's mother was always cooking in the kitchen. Being the only girl in a house full of boys his mother did most of the cooking, even in her youth. Radar has siblings too, though never named, so Mrs. O'Reilly had her hands full.
But being farmers, they also aren't that well off. Everyone wore hand-me-downs. So the food, while filling, often included whatever could be thrown together.
So when those gross looking recipes in the 40s/50s came out...the food in the O'Reilly household could often look like this:

This prepared Radar very well for the food he eventually had to consume on a day-to-day basis in the army.
Radar actually can cook too. He learned from his mom, by helping her in the kitchen. He does better with baking.
Radar has a sweet tooth, but he isn't overly picky about what he eats.
Francis Mulcahy:
Ah, from one Irishmen to another. Similarly to Radar, Francis grew up in a large family on a tight budget. His mother, also taught him to cook.
What she also taught him, was how to grow his own food. It was the cheaper alternative to keep a garden in the backyard, as opposed to trying to buy their produce at the grocery store/town market.
Francis learned to take pride in what he grew and what he helped to make, discovering his green thumb in the process.
As an adult he tended to be the one in the rectory, who would happily volunteer to cook for the other priests, as he would much prefer to cook for others than to just eat something of his own making. Food tastes best when shared with others.
Francis wasn't at all prepared for the food at the 4077th. He was far too used to food having flavor. Of course he did eat the food...he kind of had to, but he always preferred eating with the orphans at St. Teresa's. There they would have food freshly prepped by the nuns, and often they would be traditional Korean meals. Turns out, Francis really likes spicy foods and he picked up on using chopsticks like a champ.
Still he ended up losing quite a bit of weight during the war.
Charles:
From day one, Charles was not to be fed like most people; he was to be catered to.
He had a wet nurse. He had a family chef that would cook, whatever he liked. There were oysters, caviar, Kobe beef, etc.
Fancy wine and dinner parties. The man has eaten more kinds of high priced food than I could dare ever name.
But this is the same man, who will eat canned pheasant.
He was given these things, told by people with lots of money and high respectability that these things were good and important. Charles spews forth these same beliefs and states them as fact, but there's no real understanding for what he's consumed...what it means to have that privilege...the question of 'why are these things so expensive?' and 'do I actually enjoy everything I say I do?', never once coming into his mind (pre-war).
Charles doesn't really know how to cook; he thinks he does, but he doesn't.
Charles also really enjoys "peasant food", including (but not limited to) hotdogs, pizza, burgers, and fries.
He doesn't want to openly admit, and he would die of embarrassment if his grandma knew...but it's still true. Same with his love of Tom and Jerry cartoons.
Still he wasn't at all prepared for the food of the 4077th, and he came back home from that hell hole with a new appreciation for the little things like potatoes that were never powdered.
