Things you could never get away with in a public school in this day and age:
Tumblr media
My kindergarten teacher (who was the coolest teacher on the planet) had us do construction work. He cut all the wood and brought it in, would mark where a nail should go, and come back around after we were done and make sure everything was nailed in all the way.
The playhouse ended up in a local playground, where kids could enjoy it whenever they wanted.
Other things my kindergarten teacher did:
STEM: Kept a lawn mower engine (just the engine, not the blades) on a table and let us take it apart and put it back together at will (he'd also teach us what every part was and what it did).
Crime: Showed us how to make lockpicks to break into the first grade classroom and steal some of their learn to read books because he was bored that week and wanted to teach us.
Life Skills: Showed up the first day of class with 2 salmon he caught that morning and taught us how to gut and cook them.
Non-Binary/LGBT Rights: Would come in full drag as "Mrs. Wright" and teach us lessons he thought we'd take better from a matronly figure-- but also demanded everyone show full respect to the nice lady with the beard (he was not non-binary or trans, but wanted us to learn to accept people for who they are no matter what).
Archaeology: The kindergarten had a separate playground from the main school, and he buried plastic stegosaurus bones in the sand box, made a grid with string, and gave us paint brushes to conduct a full archaeological dig. We had to draw where we found anything so a thorough record was kept.
Charity: He would throw random "Learn to cook" or "Pot Luck" days in every couple of weeks, where we'd take turns teaching everyone how we made some family favorite meal (well, the parent who came along or gave him the recipe would). A way to subtly take care of the less fortunate students, some of whom rarely got hot, nutritious meals at home.
If there was ever a person who deserved the Teacher of the Year award, it was him.

here's an update for all the "tOuRiSm iS fOr ThE pEoPlE" fucks. always remember that the second anyone steps foot on that land in the name of "tourism" or any other haole institution, that is colonizing&that person is a fucking explicit modern colonizer who made the conscious decision to be one and has spent a lot of fucking money on that trip to get their title. only that kine want more of their kin there-- don't pretend that shit is for anyone else.
drop dead of spontaneous combustion specifically, not even the sharks would want that p墨lau fucking meat.

page 566 - it was a nice town until everyone started turning their households into business firms.
Everyone thought the same thing: my household is inefficient. It provides shelter for myself and my family but I cannot quantify that using my late-capitalism vocabulary. Also, I am not generating income from the pull-out couch in the basement.
So, instead of uniting with neighbours to build a new vocabulary that spoke of secure households for all people, they washed towels for strangers and fretted over star numbers. Hopefully, their business firm would earn enough that their household could join the wealthy hegemony actively destroying the public good. A new vocabulary was never created.

Remember how "Karen" used to mean "suburban white lady who calls the cops on black men" and then like almost immediately it morphed into "the customer is always wrong and asking for a manager or requesting a refund makes you an entitled brat" with a side dose of "rude and angry women are the worst humans on earth."
Criticizing white women for weaponizing the police against black people? Not interesting enough apparently. But loving capitalism and hating angry women? Hell yeah let's have 10,000 viral videos that's the good shit right there. That woman being a bitch in a starbucks is worse than Hitler and we should doxx her children

I think the reason I'm not happy in my new city/country and kinda want out asap (luckily this is temporary, just a one-semester exchange until December, and sometime in January I'm going back to Germany) is that I haven't found My Types of Places here yet :') I came here with a bunch of people I know and I don't really like the things they like hahah, or the things tourists tend to do here. I think I'm just not well-suited to living in touristy cities 馃槶 That's what strikes me so much about Vienna too, I get anxious in huge crowds. I want to live somewhere where I can completely avoid and ignore the existence of those if necessary...
The problem is that a lot of history stuff here needs a car to access... :') And the theatre scene isn't quite as vibrant or affordable as in Germany (though I'm aware Germany is probably one of the best countries there is for that hahah). But idk, I guess I'll try not to despair yet, and I'll keep looking and try to make the most of everything while I'm here :')

Films good movies good banshees of inisherin was good
#mfw a movie has irish slang in it and i am familiar with it instead of usamerican stuff#i have Some Thoughts on the setting of inisherin + the time period given the givens abt the aran islands#but nothing concrete. might meditate on it#like ok im no scholar on the aran islands ive been there a couple times ive read a couple articles thats it#but like. the tourism leaning into their image of Old Irish Villag铆n With Sheeps And Stone Walls basically overruns its reputation#and the islands have leaned hard into the tourism and portraying themselves as True Irish Old Villages or whatever#and thus settles the situation where like. everything about the islands pander to the tourists#the islands themselves are not doing well as places to live iirc#aging population people moving away lack of amenities and funding and resources that arent Tourism#its a gaeltacht but the tourism business mandates knowing english etc etc etc lotsa shit#like i had a school friend from an island and she was always unreachable on breaks bcos the island didnt have wifi#SO! the islands around ireland suffer from lack of facilities while bending to tourism bcos they gotta#BACK 2 BANSHEES to be clear inisherin isnt an actual island but it was filmed on inish m贸r and very clearly based on the arans#i like the island setting bcos of the sense of isolation it gives i think it was a good choice for the movie#HOWEVER its like. you know the thing where all irish media needs to be set in the old times#when we were all wearing aran wool jumpers and playing our little instruments and being cute historical dotes#yeah. that. compounded with the aran islands wicked having to play into that in the present day#like banshees itself isnt that bad an offender. the island setting just makes it more obvious and you could tick lines off on a bingo sheet#(shoutout to the obligatory civil war reference)#where was i going with this. im tired of weird 'back when ireland was ireland' shit being Thee thing to make art abt#this is why young offenders is the best piece of irish cinema this decade. i need to rewatch the young offenders
