the thing is I am still thinking about that bit in conclave right before they're about to vote when the breath of wind & birdsong comes in through the window that had recently been violently blown in to let the light and air into what has til then been a suffocatingly still & sterile & dark & enclosed environment & it ruffles all the pages on the desks & they all pause and look up. like oh god is there

So many people will be outright antagonistic to any acknowledgment of Dean's abusive tendencies and insist you "just enjoy the show" as if abuse is something tangential that people project onto the characters and not intrinsically linked with Supernatural's themes. Imagine if anytime you tried to discuss John's abuse of Sam and Dean, people said that it was unnecessary hair splitting. This isn't about cancelling Dean, or woobifying Sam or Jack. It's just a part of the show we are watching.

Murderbot Diaries out here asking the real questions like:
What if you were something that was neither human nor machine and you had only ever been treated as a monstrous object? And:
What if there had never been a single entity in your existence that you could trust? And:
What if you were constructed from the most basic parts of your psyche to be a violent tool? And:
What if any attempt to protect yourself from abuse would result in torture or death? And:
What if you were finally free? And suddenly there were humans who loved you, but you had no way to comprehend that let alone believe it? And:
What if you didn't want to be human, but you had to alter yourself body and mind in order to hide among them? And:
What if you cared so fucking much that you couldn't stand it, and the only way you could express that was through astounding acts of violence to protect them? And:
What if caring was so dangerous and alien to you that you didn't even know you did? And:
What if you were so afraid that looking at anyone was impossible, and you had to stand at the remove of seeing everyone through a third person point of view? And:
What if you were a sarcastic bastard because you'd never been allowed to express anything but groveling subservience? And:
What if you started to want to accept that you cared?

(No "see results" option because I find that more non-gifmakers than actual gifmakers will engage with the poll if there's an option like that. If you aren't a gifmaker, this poll is not for you.)

Okay something I haven't really had the words for so far is to describe the surreal weirdness of interacting with Current Events™️ as a ger.
Partially this has been me trying not to make this about my feelings, and partially this is a lack of ability to articulate the feelings anyway. But I'm gonna try because I think others might be in the same boat.
So one of the interesting things about being a Jew by Choice is that a number of us don't have any prior connections to Judaism. We are not culturally Jewish when we start, we do not have Jewish family or ancestry, and we are not joining a Jewish family through marriage. We just.... felt drawn. Called, if you will. A lot of us in that boat are seekers, moved by some moment of truth or divine connection.
At any rate, that leaves us in a weird position when it comes to Jewish cultural trauma, both new and old. We don’t carry the ancestral trauma of knowing we have lost literal family to atrocities, but we accept that may be our future. We don’t have the literal trauma, but the collective grief and community trauma seeps into your bones very quickly, the more you identify with the Jewish people. We don’t have the literal trauma, but we then worry about whether we also lack the resilience that has sustained Jews by birth throughout history.
"We are made of strong stuff! Your ancestors passed on their strength!" An excellent and true statement for many, but what if our specific ancestors did not? Worse: what if they were on the other side of the equation?
We are also confronting, for the first time, the reality of seeing how few people care about Jews outside of other Jews. For many born Jews, that makes this a time to consolidate into family, to hunker down. For gerim, we find strength in community but many of us have family that do not and cannot fully understand (and honestly many of us are praying our families don't understand it for any number of reasons.)
So we are processing this for the first time as adults, outside of a Jewish family. And it's surreal and weird and hard and alienating and you feel both like you are inside and outside of the community. You are profoundly affected, but do you have any right to complain? You chose this. You knew what was coming, probably. This kind of antisemitism? Brutally predictable, if you know Jewish history. You have survivors' guilt and secondhand trauma, but other people have it far worse, far more personal, and so it feels like there's no appropriate space to discuss that. You want to speak up and also, you don't want to draw attention to yourself. You want people to see you. You want to hide. This is the only thing anyone in your community can focus on, and you are struggling the same way. It's been two months and you need to snap out of this. This doesn't hurt you directly. But it does. It does. Because no matter how isolated you feel, you cannot separate yourself from your people.
Idk it's a lot. But I'm fine. I'm fine, of course.

Broke (2016): BBC Sherlock is a phenomenal piece of media and anything that seems like a flaw just hasn't been fully explored yet
Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)
Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked
#these just sum up my personal takes at the years in question and also what i'm seeing on tumblr/other social media#bbc sherlock#sherlock holmes#and i actually have a lot more thoughts to share on this series#specifically relating to the cultural impact#there is SO much about the show that goes unappreciated in hindsight because of how public perception of it has soured#and i totally fell into this as well--i still regularly rewatch hbomberguy's video absolutely dismantling the series and he isn't wrong!!#but what i'm saying is that i think it's easy for us to look at a piece of media (especially one so massively popular) like sherlock...#with very black-and-white lenses. it wouldn't have become so popular if there wasn't something inherent in it that resonated with people#and that's being buried (and i totally forgot it) because 'sherlock is cringe and problematic. can't believe i liked that'#which again it IS full of issues and those are well-documented as they should be. future portrayals should not repeat those mistakes#BUT being able to impact so many people is a merit in itself. and that's only possible because of other genuinely good things about the show#yes the way they handled the relationship between john and sherlock was riddled with problems YES it was often queerbaiting#AND the way they portrayed that relationship had a deep effect on me. i saw a lot of myself in sherlock and the complex way he loved john#the nuanced feelings he had about john's marriage to mary. the part (in s4!) where john calls him inhuman for not feeling romantic love#there was genuine intention and care put into some parts of this show and it comes through in scenes like those. they impact people.#and because of this realization i'm going to (eventually) do a rewatch of the show. i'm much older and i want to see how i'll view it now#but i want to go into it--and i want everyone who engages with it still--to have an open mind and evaluate it for what it is#not what we expected it to be (secret episode anyone?) or what the cultural drift has turned it into (the tiktok of sherlock's mind palace)#but the messy problematic somewhat-heartfelt massively significant and ultimately meaningful piece of media it actually was#anyway that's my thoughts would love to hear y'all's perspectives#funny how after all this time making a sherlock post still feels like i'm poking a bees' nest lol please be kind!#kay can i just catch my breath for a second#kay has a party in the tags

You know the batfamily is pretty big.
Back when Bruce and Selina were engaged I think there would have been a moment where he had to explain the family tree. I like to think it went something like this.
Selina: Run that by me again.
Bruce: 8 kids. I have 8 kids Selina, and soon so will you.
Selina: Bruce, Honey, I know about the robins but where are the other 4 coming from?
Bruce: True, you were there while they were growing up, but the others... lets say they're complicated.
Selina: Continue.
Bruce: Duke is in orphan limbo because of his situation so I've taken it upon myself to act as his legal guardian.
Selina: Fair enough.
Bruce: Cassandra would be better off dead then with her biological parents so she's been unofficial adopted.
Selina: Her parents being?
Bruce: Lady Shiva and-
Selina: Say no more. Hate her.
Bruce: Glad we agree on that.
Selina: Right, so what about the blond?
Bruce: Stephine's father was a crime lord, missing, but who knows these days. She came into our lives, started dating Tim. When they broke up we forgot to kick her out.
Selina: So she's squating?
Bruce: Pretty much.
Selina: Alright I guess that makes sense. I think I can live with them, they're nice enough kids-
Bruce: I'm not finished.
Selina: Right, that's only 3. Lay it on me, who's the fourth, Barbra? a new robin? Some kid I've never met?
Bruce: Helana.
Selina: Who's Helana?
Bruce: Huntress, the one in purple with a crossbow.
Selina: Right, I think she was part of birds of prey at one point. What does she have to do with you?
Bruce: With us.
Selina: With us?
Bruce: Helana is from an alternate reality. She was tossed here and given a different, different memories, different life. However, with all the multiversal nonesense these days some of that got knocked loose.
Selina: Again, what does that have to do with us?
Bruce: She's our daughter.
Selina: ... OUR WHAT?

Look, I love Jon as much as the next person but I think some of you have gone so far along the ‘Jon is a sad little man who did nothing wrong’ route that you’ve genuinely forgotten all the times he held power in a situation or like. Made a decision that hurt people

hey wait listen to me. Consider Grime not knowing Sasha was an Actual Child until after she'd already earned her steel (and done so noticeably younger than your average toadlet did) and thus by toadish traditions was considered ready for adult combat and responsibilities
