The hospital has not been a favorable place to be in. Even a nursing home wasn’t sure of the difference between both anymore. But either way they both brought back daring memories and darling one.

Like when Tony was born

Or Hank’s only kid was brought into the world

And for better or worse, seeing Miss Margaret Carter in and out of hospital for different occasions. Some were good like the birth of her children and others were odder cases like an injury or two.

Today, it was a hospital but other people like to called a nursing home.

The nursing home has been brighter more days than not, having new paint jobs done and welcoming decorations put up during special events. Especially a simple well designed holiday.

Plus it helped that the people working there were kind young folk like himself, aside from the adults in their 30s and 40s.

He made his way holding up a beauty of a bouquet filled with daisies and a small little teddy bear holding a heart. He knew it was cheesy but anything to put a smile on the lady he was going to see.

His lady.

The founder of the very organization he sweetly applied to help protect.

The women who drive him nuts and who he loves to annoy just to see her crack a smile.

Mrs. Margaret Carter. Peggy. His Peg.

He knocked on the door, opening it with a soft smile saying, “Where’s my favorite lady? I sorta owe her a date night.”

“Aww my knight in shining armor.” She chuckled in her bed, her curls loosen and smile lines more promptly found, “Your a sap darling.”

“I know but you love me for it.”

“Sadly I do.”

“Sadly?!”

That caused Peggy to laugh at his reaction, patting the bed to sit down next to her. And he happily followed suit, lazily wrap an arm around her, smiling.

“How you doing, doll?” He asked with a soft grin, “Hit anyone lately?”

She playfully slapped his chest and grins, “No. I’m an angel here, they treat me right. I got chicken and white rice today. Yesterday it was Ham.”

“Oh lucky girl you can treated like royalty. Can I stay with you? Technically I should be here with you.”

“No, you wouldn’t like it. You will get bored and impatient here, my darling. You’re time will come, I promised.”

“Nah babe, I kinda stopped looking to see what happened and how I can fix everything.”

“You know, our very own godson suggested you drive off a bridge and see what happened for science purposes once.”

“He’s trying to kill his old man with that scientific idea.”

The two of them laughed out loud at that. He handed her a glass of water, just in case she ended up with a coughing fit but he was lucky, she didn’t.

“How are your kids?” Jason asked with a smile.

“Oh Thomas is good, working on his degree and Lilly is working at the children’s hospital downtown today with her sister.” Peggy explained, “They called and talked for hours.”

“Aww.”

“I wish Tony called or visited me. I’ll pull him by the damn ear one of theses days, i don’t care if he’s grown!”

“Go ahead I ain’t stopping you! You’re his godmother.”

“…I miss this. I miss you, why do you come and see my more often? Like twice a month.”

He sighed, “I’m sorry, I will make it a habit to do so, I promise.”

“Good, because if it was the other way around..” She started but didn’t have to finish her sentence cause he knew.

“I know you would and I love you for it.”

“You Muppet…You know I was always fond of your sister.”

Over the years the older she got, Peggy developed this small habit to ending up randomly blurting out a comment which lead to a different perspective on things or a completely new conversation in general.

He never minded it. He loved it actually, since it showed her mind was still fired up with things to say and she would say her mind no matter what. Especially if it was a witty one hand comment or clever wording on a subject.

It was a good thing as well considering her Alzheimer’s made her forget things, faces and relive memories in her head. So seeing her ramble on a topic, made him smile, because it showed that she’s doing fine.

And due to him spending so much time around her and their friend group, he developed the odd but silly little habit too.

“Oh how so?” He questioned with a smile, surprised that she remembered Dottie that well but then again, she was a chancing point for the brunette.

“She had a special spunkiest to her that I adored.” She exclaimed, with a grin as if she’s looking into a memory, “Gorgeous, honestly a brilliant blonde and she was crazy about me.”

“Ohh really now?”

“Oh please as if you didn’t know. Dottie kept me on my toes and I would say there was a certain amount of chemistry there. She kissed me and it was unexpected but..I sorta liked it.”

He mocked gasped, “Margaret Carter! You shady lady. How long have you had theses thoughts about my sister?”

Peggy smirked, “She only ever asked to be interrogated by me and it made me feel impressed that she respected me.”

“You hated her!”

“But it was rather refreshing chance of cat and mouse between us!”

“She was obsessed with you.”

“And with good reason.”

“Margaret!”

“Hey! You like my friends. Angie was your favorite.”

“She’s was a peach, stubborn, playful and a little snappy. I liked it. But it’s my sister we’re taking about!”

“Oh hush! Let me have my fun memories.”

“Yes ma’am. Go ahead and keep those memories.”

That’s when Peggy went into another memory that was sweet but stung a little for Jason.

Elizabeth Stark.

Howard’s sister and a love in his life.

Yes, he loved Angie and then Violet for plenty of years. But with her, it was different. Cozy even.

The one that got away from him, that he never got a chance to see if those feeling could actually take full force due to respect he had for brother.

Yes, him and Elizabeth over the years have sneaked off to test out a few short lived dates but it didn’t last long. Even a couple of shared kisses underneath the mistletoe during Christmas were made.

But he always assumed she liked other people in the end and he respected her too much to string her along. So he let her do her own thing and he went along to do his own.

Even though he lived together, raised their nephew under the same roof and saved one another life a plenty of times. They never actually got together, where marriage could’ve been involved one day.

But he did have a promise ring in which he gave her the day before they lost her. She died with that diamond wrapped around her finger and he was left with the tiny box.

And here was Peggy talking about her, as if she was still alive in front of them. It made him smile brightly that her spirt lived on forever.

“You love her?” She asked, resting her head on a pillow watching him pace the room for another glass of water.

He handed her a glass and nodded, “Of course i do. We both love her.”

“It hurts she went down that day…”

“I know Peg, but she still lives on in spirt.”

“..would you have married her?”

“I..”

“Grey.”

She used the nicknamed on him. His middle name is Grey, which is one of many nicknames people refer to him as such but Peggy used it catch his attention at times and she prefer it a lot more.

“Grey.” She repeated with a soft smile, sipping her water.

“I think so.” He replied with a smile.

“Good. I want to be there as the maid of honor when it happens.”

“Maid of honor?”

“Well, I most definitely won’t be standing on your side of the alter, now would I?”

“You sounded so British right now, you know that?”

“I’ll take that as a compliment my darling.”

He grinned and shook his head, “You’re like the sister I never had.”

“You do have a sister.” She added with a grin.

“Did I stutter, Ms. Carter?”

“Oh. Well aren’t you cheeky today? I like it!”

“But I’m serious, you’re like a big sister to me.”

She smiled as she blushed, “Aw darling stop. No please go on, I didn’t think you thought of me that way. I assumed you did but never actually thought it would be confirmed.”

“Oh of course I have. Dottie never treated me like she should have, nor loved me a way a big sister should, leaving me in the dust to pick up the pieces but you didn’t.” He added with a smile.

“You know, after Micheal I never thought I would have anyone else.”

“Hmm.”

“But then you and Howard came along, I felt almost whole. You’re like the little brother, my mother never gave me because she thought two nutty children were enough!”

“Oh really?”

He couldn’t contain his laughter at her sudden choice of words at the end as she smiled laughing around, feeling sportful. She toss a pillow across his face to shut him up as she laughed smirking at the sight of spilled water all over his shirt.

Yup they were like siblings, despite never actually saying the word out loud before until now. They didn’t have to say they acted like brother and sister, they just did. Every fight, every save, every argument they had and even the small moments between the built a united bond between the pair. Each hug, hand hold and even looks they shared meant more than words combined.

They lost many people over the years, either by death or losing touch due to some kind of issue. They have faced a lot together, she couldn’t imagine a world without Jason in it. After the war, Peggy felt lost and undersign by others, reduced to a lousy sectary or told she wasn’t much less than Captain America’s little lady.

A part of her almost believed it for some time until Howard, Elizabeth and Jason stepped in. 3 of the only people who believed in her at the time.

Yes she knew the three of them for a while but it was Jason who was working at the SSR alongside her with Mr. Jarvis, who fought to keep her on payroll. Encouraging her to keep going, fighting in restaurants together, saving each other’s skin and just having another person to talk to. She didn’t know she needed that at the time. Hell, when Jarvis wasn’t around, he cleaned up her wounds.

But Peggy wouldn’t lie about the times she wanted to punch the blonde for doing something stupid or saying something he shouldn’t have admitted in the first place. She even slapped him a couple of times over the years with a glare.

He would tease her about something like a crush saying she blushed and she would raise an eyebrow yelling, ‘I beg your pardon! I did not do such a thing.’ Or when they would mock each other’s accents in annoyance of the other person.

She didn’t even realized she had a goofy little grin on her face until Jason pointed it out. She rolled her eyes and smiled replying, “I was thinking about all the times you mocked me.”

“I never mocked you. Okay, maybe? Or twice..” He admitted chuckling knowing the truth to that query.

“You would mock me behind my back and I’ll always walk in and catch you.”

“It’s because you always had to make a point or worse run into danger.”

He mocked her English accent stupidly as she gasped, “Good lord man! I don’t sound like that.”

“Oh really? ‘Mr. Jarvis was with me. We’re completely fine!’, ‘I was merely getting the job done.’ Oh and my all time favorite, ‘I made a horrible decision. When’s lunch?’.”

“I hate you. I don’t sound like that and I never treated Jarvis like that!”

“You once came home and Jarvis was hit in the back with a dart, that knocked him out cold.”

“He was fine!”

“He was hilariously asleep and thought he was hallucinating ponies for the rest of the afternoon.”

“To be fair, for being my right hand he wasn’t the best for escaping targets..”

“He said and I quote, ‘Oh mummy it's the biggest horsey ever!’”

That got a real laugh out of Peggy as she remembered it so clearly, Jarvis was laying down on the couch with his eyes closed after saying, ‘Jarvelous!’ Then he fell right on the thick ground outside of the house, afterward they brought him inside to see if he was aright. Which he wasn’t.

Jason and Daniel questioned the situation saying she should’ve called for backup as she told them, ‘I did have back up. Mr. Jarvis was with me!’

Cue in, Jarvis lazily laying down on the couch pointing his finger muttering ever so clearly, ‘Oh mummy, it’s the biggest horsey ever!’

Jason couldn’t help but snorted as he got flashbacks of the memories in his head. Him and Peggy also remember the time Jarvis knocked over a two time Oscar nominee, Whitney Frost, with one of Howard’s precious car.

Elizabeth was just in shock as Howard looked out the window and yelled, ‘Jarvis, you just hit a woman with my car!’

‘I know, sir’ Edwin Jarvis said with a simple tone.

‘She’s a two-time Oscar nominee.’

‘Miss Frost is quite resilient. She’s fine. Trust me.’

He laughed remembering the look that Elizabeth and Peggy shared conveying shock but with a mix of pride towards the accident. They were all almost sued for it though but then again the women caused them so many issues and she basically killed her husband. With was also deemed as Jarvis’ revenge on the same women who came to their home and shoot his wife—Ana Jarvis lived of course, with a few minor yet sad complications to her surgery—but still!

Everything was fine after that, she was put always for good for her insane behavior and things slowly went back to normal for a while.

Jason and Peggy spent the rest of the day together in her hospital room chatting, drinking gentle coffees and snacking on the fruits that were served to her room. On occasion, a call from friends or relatives would appear to be made, but it wasn’t immediately apparent what was being said over the phone.

The two of them even stayed in peaceful silence as they watched whatever was available on the tv screen.

All in all, it was nice.

They may be old enough and oddly fit for this position in the universe but they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Reasons why I love it: If you know copperbadge, then you'd probably agree that they're one of the best Stony authors out there. And this series is one of my favorite works of theirs. Everyone's characterizations are phenomenal, and the dialogue is witty and funny at times and deeply emotional when it needs to be. Plus, the action scenes are absolute perfection. If you don't know these fics, do yourself a favor and delve into the wonderful world of rage duckling Steve, I promise you won't regret it.

Steve is an absolute delight, and Tony matches him in every aspect. It's the perfect start to an amazing series, and I really hope you check it out if you haven't yet.

I love how high tensions are the whole time, what with Tony's whole paladium issue being handled almost completely off screen and Steve constantly getting caught up in fight after fight. This fic is amazing, and you should definitely read it.

Summary: Several short stories written to prompts, set in the Tiny Spy Assassin Steve universe.

Reasons why I love it: Each and every one of these additions to the series is lovely. I especially enjoyed the one with the Nazi Chihuahua puppies and the one where Tony gets horny over watching Steve fight. Definitely check out all of these, they're wonderful!

Reasons why I love it: Getting to see this particular Steve interacting with other canon Steves and Tonys is so much fun. I love the ending in particular and how it leaves what really happened somewhat open to interpretation. This fic is great, and I hope you check it out!

Subtlety Not Our Strong Point

Summary: Bucky is not good at proposing, but once he managed, he and Sam were going to let people find out organically. Unfortunately, Tony Stark has never done anything organically in his life.

Reasons why I love it: I've recced this fic on its own before, but you bet your ass I'm reccing it again. This proposal is the most Bucky thing ever. And Tony casually blowing Sam and Bucky's cover is the most Tony thing ever. This fic is hilarious and sweet at the same time, and if you don't know it yet, you should definitely read it!

Lifesaver

Summary: Steve really, really hates being sick.

Reasons why I love it: Aw, this fic makes me want to bundle Steve in a mountain of blankets and feed him cherry candy all day long, the poor thing. Thankfully, Tony's got him covered. I love how stable their relationship is at this point, enough so for Steve to be truly vulnerable with Tony. It's beautiful to see. Plot:

As of this moment (27.7.23) the plot hasn’t been decided, but this is where it gets fun. We’ll keep it loosely based on the events of the MCU from 2012 onwards. That does not mean we’re going to stick to every single event that happens from that point forward. What does this mean? It means you can have your character be present during an event they were never a part of. Example:

- Marc Spector! joining The Avengers in the Battle of New York!

- Bucky Barnes meeting The Avengers before Civil War!

- Loki assisting The Avengers defeat Ultron!

And much more cool stuff like this. The sky’s the limit.

Note: we don’t knock down rare pairs or rare friends. Some of our rare pairs are crazy, you wouldn’t see them anywhere else. You will never be judged no matter who you ship (provided they’re of age and it’s consensual)

We encourage you to be a nerd! What the heck does this mean?

Share your character headcanons with us. Share headcanons about other characters with their admin. As long as you’re respectful of everyone’s take on their characters and don’t judge the headcanons themselves, nothing is more fun than sharing your own takes

The rakes can be deep and well thought-out or they can be cracky. You’ll probably find things like:

Sometimes the color blue triggers Clint’s fight or flight response now or Natasha Romanoff is an avid fan of Megan Thee Stallion.

We also strongly encourage you to discuss the relationship of your character to others. I.e. how much have they been present in each other’s lives? Since we don’t stick to a certain timeline, have they crossed paths with each other when it’s not canon? These discussions build a richer in-character interacting experience. Do your characters have inside jokes? Have they been on a mission before that ended HorrificallyTM?

“Are you under the impression we intend to hurt her, Mr. Stark? I assure you, that is not the case. Her condition is classified, as I’m sure you understand, but it’s not our intention to fulfill the role of scientist boogeymen, here. She’s not being examined or tested, beyond routine care.” Agent Coulson pauses, then raises his eyebrows. “That has been more difficult than we expected, as her medical records have been locked down by unknown, outside forces.”

So, they know he locked down her files, somehow. How much latitude does this agency he’s never heard of before actually have? Tony keeps his expression neutral and says, “That shouldn’t be a problem, should it? Can’t you override that with her verbal permission?”

“Once she is awake, yes.”

Tony shoots out of his chair and leans over, slamming both of his hands palm down against the empty desk. It hurts so much that he has to grit his teeth not to cry out, rather than immediately speaking. Coulson does throw himself back, which is gratifying, but he doesn’t look afraid.

“You drugged her? Give me an address. Now.”

Chapter Fifteen: Disinfectant

Emory learns that her knight in black leather and tek gear is named Clint Barton. His flippant sarcasm keeps her sane as they are winched down from the roof, and once they’re on the solid ground of the river bank, she finds herself fascinated by the dynamic between him and Fury. Agent Kate hasn’t accompanied the director to greet them, but he is flanked by a few dour looking men in black suits.

“If that rope was any longer you’d need workman’s comp for that drop!” Fury tells Barton in a voice just shy of stern.

“If it’d been shorter you’d have a lot more paperwork,” Barton says, grinning. He unfastens Emory from his harness in three swift motions and steps back, pulling the thick straps free of their entanglement with her hair gently. With a respectful but brusque nod, he says, “Nice to meet you,” and heads into the building.

Emory Autumn and Nick Fury look at each other for a full minute in silence.

“You knew I could fly.” Emory finally says. She crosses her arms, feeling dreadfully exposed.

“I knew you could fall,” Fury retorts. “Glad to see it wasn’t immediate.”

“Me too,” she sighs. “I’m used to negotiation, okay? But I’m also used to knowing where my bed is at the end of the day. Can we pretend I’m threatening to walk up the fifty-odd flights of stairs to toss myself back out that open window again only to be caught by a second muscle-bound archer?” Her chest hurts from needing to let out a shaky breath, but Emory holds it in, sure that it’ll weaken her position. Every part of her body is screaming that she’s not physically cut out for this. “How about we just skip ahead to the part where you agree I can have contact with Tony, and I agree to help you?” 

Fury regards her with a forbidding, narrow-eyed glare for a few seconds before relaxing into a thoughtful nod. “It’s a deal.”

Her relief curves a layer of energy around her like a caress, and Emory impulsively decides to thank him in kind, sending a tiny twist of air toward him. Because he’s in the process of turning toward the building, it makes his trenchcoat furl out behind him dramatically.

“Don’t push it,” he says, but she can hear the amusement in his voice.

Emory feels underdressed in her scrubs when they walk into the dark grey staircase the back door opens onto. There’s a level of sophistication to the architecture that is completely missing in the room she’d partially wrecked less than an hour before.

“Do you seriously have a ‘throwback to a sterile generic government agency’ wing of this place, but everything else is in a more modern design?” she asks as they start up the single flight of stairs.

“Actually? Yes. You’d be surprised how much difference that can make in certain situations,” Fury says. “To our benefit, of course.”

“Of course,” she agrees, kind of impressed. The way that this place and its people seem to have layers upon layers is intimidating, though. Emory had been hoping she could leave that kind of hidden meaning social manipulation behind her after getting a ‘break’ from it, of sorts. Show business is an underhanded, double-talking environment, and she’d become good at dealing with that as self defense. The only silver lining she has to look forward to right now is that all of this counts as a great excuse to continue avoiding the inevitable confrontation with Rory.

Fury takes her through a hallway and into an elevator, turning to give her a slightly impish look, hovering his hand between them as he speaks. “Too bad the staircase that leads where we’re going doesn’t have a gap in the middle. You could just float your way up. Good practice.”

She backs up so the wall of the elevator is behind her and she’s mostly looking at Fury’s back. “Why even bother with the charade when you’re this well informed? Couldn’t you just hand me my script?”

“We needed to see how you’d handle disappointment.”

That has her speechless for the rest of the short elevator ride. When they emerge, it’s to a high-ceilinged room with various hallways branching from it. Sounds of people exercising and practicing fighting each other can be heard from the large gym area separated from them by a glass wall with a shoulder-height window running the length of it. Emory throws Fury a wry look; she’s short enough that she doesn’t see as much through that window as he can. He leads her to the leftmost hallway and pulls out a keycard, holding it up.

It has her picture on it, featuring a candid photo taken before Afghanistan.

Fury scans the keycard and the door unlocks. He steps inside halfway to look around, then moves back and gestures for her to go in. His confidence and the pre-made keycard he hands her are a powerful indicator of both his trust and his confidence in his own decisions. She can’t help but wonder if he understands Tony Stark’s influence on her, or if she’s so far managed to keep Fury on his toes in that regard.

Emory pulls in a steadying breath and walks into the room. It’s a self-contained apartment, complete with stylized room dividers that don’t quite reach to the ceiling.

She turns around to look at Fury. “You sure you want me so close to the elevator?”

“Better than the end of the hallway. Look out the window.” She walks over to it and understands what he means. This part of the building is round, with protruding sections that curve around the outside. Her room is on the edge of one of those built out sections, making her window barely functional. It looks out at the building, for the most part, rather than the view, and its cramped position would make gathering air for a quick exit tricky. Fury’s probably got a whole report on the probabilities.

“Better than bars,” Emory observes, walking into the center of the room to stand next to the grey-patterned loveseat.

“Indeed.” He raises his chin to regard her sternly for a few seconds, then nods at various parts of the room as he mentions them. “Kitchen is self-explanatory. Bathroom has a stand-up shower, picture window has a button to turn it opaque. Computer is locked down-- data comes in, not out. Arrangements are being made to contact your family--” She draws in a deep breath to mention Tony, and Fury holds up a hand to stop her from interrupting. “I am working on something for Stark. Give me twenty-four hours.”

“Are there even any clocks in here?” she asks pointedly, welcoming the tiny pinpricks of energy starting to flare on her skin at the thought that she’ll talk to Tony soon. The heartache from not doing so is a worrisome counterbalance, though. She’s going to need to come up with another generator.

Fury starts for the door. “Foot of the bed.”

“Fury?” The absurdity of her situation is kicking in, and her voice is ragged, desperate. He turns. “Tell me why. Nearly everything you’ve said to me started out as a lie, but you’re sticking to this separation thing like it’s life or death.”

He stops, turns his head. “It very well might be. You spent time with the man, do you think Tony Stark will listen if he’s told he can’t help with the mission?”

Emory sags against the back of the loveseat. “Shit.” She hugs her arms around herself, but they’re a pathetic substitute for Tony’s. “There has to be something we can…” Her voice trails off.

“Time will tell.” He walks over to the door and opens it, turning toward her. You should have contact with your family in the morning. Agent Harris will be in touch about the other things.”

“Is that Nurse Kate?” Emory asks, frowning.

“Her real name is Sharon.”

“Oh what a shock, more lying!” she gripes. Is she really expected to trust these people when it takes two or three passes to get to the truth every time?

“It’s not always about you,” Fury says before pulling the door shut behind him.

Agent Phil Coulson of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division doesn’t try to play hardball with Tony when he calls. The man simply agrees to meet in less than an hour, sending over the address to a nearby business complex. It’s nearly seven in the evening when Tony buttons up his dress shirt, dons the suit coat, and adjusts the velcro for his sling.

Then he takes it off, shaking his head-- he can’t drive while he wears it, and Happy is out for the night. The arm hurts, sure, but he should be able to handle that for the short distance. When Tony slides into his seat and buckles, the act hurts like hell, and all he can see is Emory’s face scrunching up in adorable, chastising disapproval. She’d give him so much shit for this, but it’s part of the steps he must take to find her, so she’s just going to have to deal.

He spends the drive smiling, thinking about how she’d berate him for driving injured, without asking for help. Tony arrives at the small office building and parks in an open spot in front; he eyes the sling in the passenger seat but locks the car up without grabbing it. His internal Emory tsks at him.

No one is at the sparse receptionist’s desk, but a balding man with a bland suit and a friendly expression leans out of the cubicle area to see who has walked in.

“Ah, Mr. Stark. Phil Coulson,” he says, raising a hand in greeting. He angles his head toward the only private meeting space visible, an office that seems built out into the rest of the room as if an afterthought. Tony is pretty sure they’ve rented the space solely to speak to him. It puts him on edge, because if this agency has the authority to redirect military planes because of their human cargo, they’re not accurately represented by this shoddy bureaucratic facade.

Coulson sits down at the (again, almost empty of personal or business items) metal desk without reaching out for a handshake. Tony settles into the cheap, armless chair across from him and schools his face into an expression of equal blandness.

The man’s eyes trace Tony’s right arm. He obviously knows about Tony’s injury, which isn’t that surprising considering he was at the press conference to give his card to Pepper. What Coulson doesn’t do is look at his chest, even though Tony hasn’t chosen his dress shirt with enough care to conceal what’s embedded there. The light blue color allows a faint glow to shine through. Has someone from his agency talked to Emory about what happened in Afghanistan? Tony hadn’t asked her to keep it a secret, after all, but to him, it’s so private that this would be a given. Tony wishes he could get a read on Coulson.

Is he a sloppy paper pusher checking boxes by meeting with Tony to get any additional information about their new captive? Or is he one of their best agents, sent out to assess Tony while simultaneously concealing their true weight as an agency?

“Thanks for meeting with me,” Coulson says. “You must be doing well, to have driven yourself here.”

“Sure,” Tony agrees easily. He’s certain that this man’s genial demeanor is actually rife with hidden threat, and he can respect that. He’s not going to back down, though.

He’s not leaving this place without Emory’s location.

“So our purview is rather broad,” Coulson says, as if apologetic. “To start, I’d like to ask you some questions about your escape from captivity in Afghanistan.”

“I can’t imagine I’d have anything to add to Ms. Autumn’s account of the event, which I’m sure you’ve already gathered?” Tony lifts his chin and dons the 80/20 stern/smug expression that Pepper bitches to him about.

“As you might imagine, it’s important to gather any and all accounts, as eyewitness testimony is often distorted by emotional entanglements,” Coulson says smoothly.

“Pesky, aren’t they?” Tony says, pouring on the charm. He leans forward in his chair and offers Coulson a tight smile. “Here’s how this is actually going to go: you have my friend. You took her, which I take personal offense to, and I gotta tell you, after recent events? I find myself much less inclined to care about first world inconveniences. I have a considerable fortune and very few shits to give. Where is she?”

“She’s staying at our headquarters in D.C.,” Coulson says, relaxing back in his chair. “As you might imagine, her safety was at issue, initially, so we took measures to--”

“Careful,” Tony interrupts through nearly clenched teeth.

“Are you under the impression we intend to hurt her, Mr. Stark? I assure you, that is not the case. Her condition is classified, as I’m sure you understand, but it’s not our intention to fulfill the role of scientist boogeymen, here. She’s not being examined or tested, beyond routine care.” Agent Coulson pauses, then raises his eyebrows. “That has been more difficult than we expected, as her medical records have been locked down by unknown, outside forces.”

So, they know he locked down her files, somehow. How much latitude does this agency he’s never heard of before actually have? Tony keeps his expression neutral and says, “That shouldn’t be a problem, should it? Can’t you override that with her verbal permission?”

“Once she is awake, yes.”

Tony shoots out of his chair and leans over, slamming both of his hands palm down against the empty desk. It hurts so much that he has to grit his teeth not to cry out, rather than immediately speaking. Coulson does throw himself back, which is gratifying, but he doesn’t look afraid.

“You drugged her? Give me an address. Now.”

“Please don’t further injure yourself, Mr. Stark. We’re on the same side.”

“Like hell we are! We rescued ourselves from that cave, and her reward is a dressed-up American version of the same fucking thing?” Tony pushes off and walks away from the desk so he doesn’t punch the guy in the face and send himself to the hospital for real.

“I’d really prefer she be the one to explain the situation to you, sir, but the short version is that the injections she took while in captivity carry a fairly large drawback that our agency has been trying to find a way to mitigate. She’s in the best possible place to deal with that drawback.” Coulson’s tone is soft, compared to Tony’s raging harshness. Tony hears his chair push back from the desk.

This is exactly what he’d been afraid of. As much as he’d love to reject Coulson’s words as fake and manipulative in the same way he rejects that the shabby office building they’re meeting in is real, there’s a ring of truth to his tone. Yes, he wants her to be safe, but ‘safe’ is relative, when there’s both a real problem to deal with along with the artificial problem of red tape standing between them.

Tony’s mind races, trying to come up with leverage.

“Mr. Stark?”

Tony wheels around, pins the man with a glare. “I assume you’d like to keep her condition secret? And that your so-called mitigation is classified?”

Coulson nods, one hand out as if awkwardly trying to soothe a raging beast. He has no idea.

“Put me in touch with her or I’ll do it my way. I’ll send her messages with your help or I’ll post them in every newspaper, on every news program, every publication that has begged me for an interview in the past day. I can assure you, there are hundreds.”

The agent blinks, which Tony supposes counts as ‘shocked’ for him. “Do you really think it’s best to subject her to that kind of scrutiny?”

“What’s best is for her to be in contact with me,” Tony bites out. They look at each other for a long minute, neither blinking. The ache in his arm helps to keep him focused.

“I’ll pass that along,” Coulson finally says.

“You do that.” Tony turns to leave. Right as he reaches out for the doorknob, the agent speaks again.

“Oh, one more thing. Should I contact Ms. Potts to reschedule?”

He doesn’t want to stop. He almost doesn’t, but Tony’s not ignorant to the fact that he’s just threatened someone who can make a call and have Emory moved out of D.C. before Tony has a chance to get home and arrange a flight out there, much less actually landing.

“Good idea. Do it tomorrow, would you? I gave her the night off.”

With that, Tony walks out. He slides into the driver’s seat wishing he hadn’t chosen a convertible. Either he tries to buckle up without his right hand and Coulson sees it, or he bears the agony and fucks up his arm by buckling himself. If he chooses the latter, he’ll have to sit until the pain subsides enough to actually fucking drive away. So much for a power move.

Tony rests his forehead on the steering wheel in lieu of doing anything. As he has every time he isn’t actively working on something, Tony thinks about what Emory might be going through. Did they lock her up as if she’s some kind of dangerous monster? Have they tried to force her into using her powers? Interrogated her? He already knows she’ll have asked to talk to him, and Coulson has probably known where he is since before he crossed the ocean.

Tony’s startled by the sound of the seatbelt unspooling and jerks sideways to see that Coulson is standing beside the car, pulling on the buckle.

“What are you doing?”  

“You’re not the only one making threats regarding a loved one’s safety. Be glad I’m not commandeering the car and sending you home with an agent, instead. Drive safe, Mr. Stark.” As he speaks, Agent Phil Coulson leans over and buckles Tony in, taking the time to tighten the belt. That just so happens to allow the man to press the back of his hand against the center of Tony’s chest, where he has to have felt the hard shape of the ARC reactor.

Tony chuckles, shaking his head. “Well played.” 

“We’ll be in touch about contacting Ms. Autumn,” the agent promises, straightening up and walking away.

He deliberately does not turn to see Coulson’s expression, choosing instead to watch his progress back to the sidewalk in the rearview mirror. He knows it’s reckless, he knows it’s going to hurt, but Tony throws the car into reverse with an exaggerated gesture that stabs pain through his right arm, before swinging the car out onto the road and speeding away.

The sound of a phone ringing wakes Emory up. She squints at the clock with bleary eyes, only recognizing the time because the hands of the analog device form a straight line, top to bottom. Scrambling out of bed, she makes her way to the telephone and picks it up, pressing the old-style device to her ear.

“Hello?” she asks, hearing the scratchy, just-woke-up tone and wincing.

“It’s me.”

Next chapter, Tony and Emory finally get to speak to each other, but the effect on Emory's powers is... destructive.

The thing people don’t understand is that mobility aids and other accommodations aren’t a limitation or a prison or a punishment, they’re our armor, our swords, our freedom!

And here’s the thing, in fantasy even fully abled people use mobility aids.

Seven league boots? Aids motility

Flying broom or carpet? Aids mobility

You know what else aids mobility?

A fucking horse

If you can make a horse fit in your setting, you can make well accommodated disabilities fit too.

PSA to all you fantasy writers because I have just had a truly frustrating twenty minutes talking to someone about this: it’s okay to put mobility aids in your novel and have them just be ordinary.

Like. Super okay.

I don’t give a shit if it’s high fantasy, low fantasy or somewhere between the lovechild of Tolkein meets My Immortal. It’s okay to use mobility devices in your narrative. It’s okay to use the word “wheelchair”. You don’t have to remake the fucking wheel. It’s already been done for you.

And no, it doesn’t detract from the “realism” of your fictional universe in which you get to set the standard for realism. Please don’t try to use that as a reason for not using these things.

There is no reason to lock the disabled people in your narrative into towers because “that’s the way it was”, least of all in your novel about dragons and mermaids and other made up creatures. There is no historical realism here. You are in charge. You get to decide what that means.

*stares off into the distance* Hey so what do you think is up with Echo? Did the strike shut it down too? Am I bad person for low key hoping it managed to catch it in post-production? *sighs* You know what really pisses me off is that there's been barely a murmur about that show? Like sure, Echo isn't exactly a big name, but tbh, I feel like a lot of people forget that Iron Man, most of the Avengers' core characters were not that popular when they started out. I remember being extremely confused when I heard about a Thor movie back in the day. (There was a lot of confusing information about Thor, actually. It was actually rumoured that Idris Elba was being cast as Thor and there was a lot of confusion and racism flying around, nevermind the fact that he was better known as a DJ back then.) No one fucking cared about most of the heroes that made up the early cycles of the MCU. The X-men, Spider-Man, The Punisher, and to a lesser degree (because the movie was real stinky) Daredevil were far bigger names than Iron Man and even The Avengers in general. That's why the success of the MCU was kind of astonishing in the beginning. They made us care about semi-obscure superheros. The reason why I'm bringing it up is like yeah, sure Echo is b-list, but honey, Tony Stark was c-list and the Guardians of the Galaxy were practically unknown so I meeeeeeaaaaannnnn...I'm just saying it's weird. Granted, I suppose Disney's been pretty quiet about their series for awhile now, but She-Hulk got more hype a year out from its release. Oh well. They just kinda dropped Moon Knight in our lap too.
