Tom and Jerry (2021) Review

LONG BLOG! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ THIS BLOG, SCROLL DOWN TO THE OVERALL SECTION FOR A TL;DR and ALETA REWRITES

Just to let you know, I didn’t want to watch this movie. That’s why I put it off for so long. I only watched it because my ex-mutual on Twitter is bonkers for it and keeps harassing people who criticize the movie with his think pieces. So, for some reason, I was curious to see if he was right to defend this film. And… I personally don’t know what he sees in this movie. Clearly, he likes the Tom and Jerry stuff, but that’s only a small part of the film that doesn’t even compare to the plethora of other major problems this film has.

Story

At first, the story starts off ok. I don’t know how Tom and Jerry wound up in New York City or why Tom is trying to be a jazz pianist when he should be going around catching Jerry, but Jerry, meanwhile, is trying to find a home and live a decent life, which is a much more reasonable plot. Unfortunately, Jerry decided to be a jerkass for whatever reason and cheats Tom out of his donations. Their rivalry causes a woman named Kayla to lose her job (somehow) and she has to re-apply in a month. Because of this, Kayla gets the bright idea to manipulate her job applicant into giving her her resume to use to her advantage. At this point, I’d rather be watching Tom and Jerry because Kayla is such a toxic protagonist and I was hoping that the movie would end with the job applicant punching her, getting fired and thrown out into the streets (spoilers it does not). She is hired to help a couple plan for their wedding (which I don’t know why it even needs to be there, it’s the most pointless part of the movie, but ok). And then, the movie gets kinda interesting when it switches back to Tom and Jerry trying to fight each other, this time, because Jerry is intruding the hotel.

Unfortunately, the adolescent draft plot decides to say “fuck all of that, let’s make Tom and Jerry friends”, almost like this movie is trying to remake the 1992 film. Human characters take the focus? Check. Terrible music? Check. Tom and Jerry are homeless? Check. Tom and Jerry trying to be friends? Check. Young girl as the protagonist? Check.

Tom and Jerry end up rudely interrupting a baseball game and get arrested by animal control. Wedding gets ruined because some dumbass decided to bring wild animals to it. Yatti yatti yatti. It just gets worse and worse.

And we have to get the all is forgiven ending because this is for kids. And kids, I guess, are too sensitive to see people get consequences for their actions, because it reminds them of the reality of what happens when you behave poorly.

Two questions: Wasn’t this movie about Tom and Jerry again? Why are we teaching kids that it’s okay to steal someone’s resume just because you don’t have a job and are jealous of some rare lucky people living their best life? Sure this insecurity might be relatable to teenagers, but this is a family movie, it doesn’t need to cater only to Gen Z. Having a character commit a crime because she’s insecure just makes her come off as extremely petty and immature and overall, not sympathetic. And have the other characters forgive her just because “she made a mistake” is even more toxic. She should be thrown in jail and have this shit permanently on her criminal record.

And that’s all the film does, is force in random 21st century pop culture (including some that are dated) just to cater to the Millennial and Gen Z crowd. What about the older people that watched Tom and Jerry? What should they take away from this? There’s nothing wrong with modernizing Tom and Jerry, but that doesn’t mean you need to contrive every possible modern reference under the sun.

Characters

Besides the complaints I made about Tom and Jerry in the story section, they were actually one of the better parts of the movie and they were portrayed alright. Their antics are still witty like the cartoons and Tom even gets a devil and angel on shoulder thing which is also portrayed cleverly. I would say every Tom and Jerry character mostly keep to the spirit of their cartoons. It’s too bad that they’re not in the film more.

The human characters on the other hand, are all subpar. Most of what they say are either punny, cornball dialogue or pop culture references, and it often feels terribly contrived. Often feeling dumbed down to kids or just clearly phoned in.

The only characters I thought were kinda okay were Terence (because he’s the most normal person in the film) and Joy (just because I think she’s neurodivergent, unfortunately, she’s often played off as a joke and the other characters treat her like some horror movie character (abelism much?)).

Kayla is an all around horrible person and character who’s just a complete self-absorbed jerkass to everyone in the hotel. I don’t mind watching horrible people/antiheroes in fiction, but this character does not get any comeuppance for her actions and the character development she kinda got felt shallow and forced and like she didn’t really regret her actions because she just makes it out to be a “mistake” instead of something she should genuinely atone for. Secondly, this is a Tom and Jerry movie, this whole subplot has no place being there. I think in a movie that doesn’t star Tom and Jerry or any franchise character, this could’ve been an interesting plot. Someone going through hell and back to get a job, even if it gets in the way of other people. However, her only motivation to get the job was because she temporarily lost her other one and because of her own jealousy of other people, which makes her come off as petty. Especially when she’s worked in other hotels and was told she can re-apply in a month. If she was extremely poor and was suffering, that would’ve at least made me understand the character more. But no, she had a well-to-do job, she’s living a decent life, yet she wants to be at the top of the food chain.

There’s this black guy who Kayla has this weird thing with. They’re not a couple, but they meet one time, he disappears for most of the movie, and then he turns up out of nowhere at the end.  There’s a hotel boss that should also be fired because he lays off Terence (who’s done nothing wrong) for Kayla and Tom and Jerry’s mishaps. The human characters, in general, have a thing for finding fault with innocent people for petty reasons. I don’t have much to say about anyone else because they don’t really have much of a personality.

And then we have Chef Jackie who's clearly an Asian rip-off of Gordon Ramsay. Yay... more stern Asian stereotypes.

Animation/Acting/Music

Usually, I don’t talk about the technical aspects of films, but oh boy, do I have a lot to say here. The animation, I would say, is smooth by itself, but when placed into the real world, it feels like they don’t belong there. 

If you look at Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the cartoon characters blend in with the real world. The real world looks gritty and dark and the cartoon characters look gritty and dark and the lighting on them reflects the lighting of the real world. If you look at Tom and Jerry, they just look like smooth 2D characters stickered onto this rough three-dimensional world. Also, why every creature has to be animated and why this takes place in a live action world is never explained. Are insects also animated? I don’t remember seeing them.

The soundtrack has to be the worst soundtrack I’ve seen in forever, and I’m usually impressionable when it comes to music. Seriously, what are rap and r&b doing in a Tom and Jerry movie? It would be something if they actually sounded good, but they don’t. They’re all some of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. Tom gets autotuned and Let’s Get Married is ruined by some fucking hip hop.

Acting is a mixed bag. Sometimes the actors put humor and energy into their performances, sometimes they sound phoned in, and sometimes they don’t even even care about their roles, and frankly, I don’t blame them. I do think the rapping pigeon voice is miscast, though.

Overall

To start with the positives, the Tom and Jerry scenes are ok. Their antics and quirks capture the humor and charm of the cartoons perfectly. There are some good ideas here, with Jerry trying to find a home and he’s stealing things to have for his home and this causes mayhem inside the hotel. Meanwhile, Tom is enlisted by the staff to get rid of Jerry. And that’s about it in terms of major positives, because oh my god, does it feel like a different person wrote the human parts. 

The world and story Tom and Jerry are caught up in are chock-full of pointless references, idiocy, contrivances, dumb middle-school type humor, and a mediocre cast of characters. If they’re not flat like the couple, they are a mean-spirited bunch like, unfortunately, our protagonist, who takes up what should’ve been the cat and mouse’s screentime. And even the good people like Terence and Joy, are often at the expense from the mean-spirited cast. The story of Tom catching Jerry is thrown out the window for a redo of 1992 with them becoming friends because our dumbass human protagonist says so. And then, the rest of the third act is just a bunch of mess because of the stupid decisions the characters make.

The theme encourages kids to forgive a criminal if they happen to steal a resume just to get the top job where they OBVIOUSLY show how unskilled they are. I am so glad this movie is forgotten, unfortunate that it is popular on Netflix.

The cartoon designs clearly don’t belong in this world. Every animal is a cartoon for some unexplained reason. Soundtrack is complete dogshit, nothing about it is good, it’s probably the worst soundtrack I’ve heard in forever. Acting ranges from wooden emotions to awkwardness at attempting to charm the audience with their cringy dialogue to ok there’s effort put into it to the rapping pigeon’s voice not fitting.

I give Tom and Jerry (2021) 4.1 bells out of 10.

For the people that are saying Tom and Jerry can’t make a good movie, go watch The Magic Ring. Maybe it’s not particularly great, but it’s so much better than this crap.

In an Aleta Rewrites story, I would make the story about both Tom and Jerry trying to find a home. They don’t want to live with each other, which is what starts their rivalry. Then, when Jerry gets to the hotel, we can still have the plot where Kayla enlists Tom to catch Jerry while Jerry is stealing from the hotel (and other places) in order to use them for his new home. This is where the action starts. Jerry has to avoid being captured and getting his items taken away. Eventually, maybe a bit after the All is Lost moment, Jerry can build himself a new home (in a box or something) that starts a third act conflict, since this could be where he ends up running into the Alley Cats. And then, the movie, I guess, ends just like how the final product did, with Tom and Jerry still being homeless and down on their luck and continuing to chase each other, because the cycle just never ends. Make Jerry the villain instead of Kay… I mean, Terence. Get rid of the wedding and job applying parts because they are not necessary.

It originally ran for sixteen episodes between 1969 and 1986, with an average of one short released every year or two. Further shorts have since been produced sporadically, including occasional commercial or PSA tie-ins. In classic Road Runner vs. Coyote fashion, it follows the adventures of Volk, a chain-smoking, alcohol-swilling lowlife wolf, who constantly chases after the youthful, athletic and intellectual hare Zayets through an urban environment. Despite its resemblance to a certain cat and mouse cartoon, the creators swear up and down that they had never seen a single Tom and Jerry cartoon when the series was in production (they claimed that their biggest western influence was post-World War II Walt Disney films). Most notable was the show's eclectic soundtrack, which included everything from old Russian folk songs to jazz rock to techno, which the animation is often synchronized with down to a frame. All 21 of the shorts are available on YouTube in varying capacities, including on the official Soyuzmultfilm channel. Despite its minimal dialogue, the show has an English dub by Filmexport Studios. A trailer for a 3D animated reboot, under the subtitle Kanikuly (Каникулы meaning "Holiday") was released on November 11th, 2021 from Soyuzmultfilm's YouTube channel, premiering its first episode a month later on December 17th. It features updated designs, targeting a much younger demographic. The first season will consist of 26 episodes each 7 minutes in length. It is currently in its second season. Sufferin' Cats (1942) Jerry previously made Tom jealous by kissing another cat [Meathead]. When Meathead tries to eat Jerry, Jerry does the same move to Tom. He jumps on Tom's shoulder, kisses Tom, sticks out his tongue to Meathead, then snuggles Tom.

The Million Dollar Cat (1944) Tom gets a million dollars so long as he doesn't harm Jerry. When Jerry follows him to his new home, Tom goes to attack him when Jerry points out the telegram. Tom kisses Jerry's cheek, then tries to flee.

The Bodyguard (1944) Spike becomes Jerry's bodyguard after Jerry saves him. Tom chases Jerry with a pipe all the way to spike. After seeing the teeth, he picks up Jerry, kisses his cheek, puts him in a baby carriage, pretends the pipe is a musical instrument, then runs.

Nit Witty Kitty (1951) 3. Tom is hit on the head again by his owner and returned to being a mouse. When Jerry goes to sit on his bed in disappointment, Tom goes in the mouse hole and kisses his cheek, then steals his bed.

Hic cup Pup (1954) Spike will beat up Tom if he wakes Tyke. Jerry straps horns to his feet, goes to where Tom is waiting outside his house hole and gives him a big kiss under his nose, barks, and then they chase.

Little School Mouse (1954) Tuffy, after passing how to outwit cats tests by being nice to Tom, teaches that cats and mice should be friends. Jerry shakes his head in disagreement. Tom nodds his head in agreement wirh Tuffy, takes off Jerry's dunce hat, then kisses Jerry on the forehead.

Mouse for Sale (1955) Jerry is treated as a dancing house pet so long as he is colored white. Tom eventually paints himself white and the owner agrees to let him in "but you must promise to be friends [with Jerry]". He gives Jerry a little kiss and nods. He then dances to beat up Jerry.

Tom and Jerry Comics (1949-1980) 4 *due to repeated reissues of some of the comics, changing companies and some hard to find names, I am not 100% sure of names or dates.

Dell #106 (May, 1953): Tom abandons chasing Jerry and Tuffy in favor of trying to hunt a bird. Jerry and Tuffy get jealous and try to dress up like the bird so Tom would still technically be chasing them. Tom shoots the "bird" and a woman gets angry at him for hunting it. Jerry and Tuffy go to rescue Tom from the woman by scaring her, she lets Tom go. They chase briefly before Tom catches them and gives Jerry a kiss for helping him out.

Dell Giant: Tom and Jerry's Summer Fun #2 (July, 1955) Resort Reverly: To get into a resort, Tom throws Jerry and Tuffy in and then offers to catch the mice. He decides to get water and grabs a cup from the dispenser Jerry and Tuffy were hiding in. The mice drink the water, then when Tom goes to drink from the cup Jerry kisses him to mock him.

M.G.M.'S TOM AND JERRY'S WINTER FUN ISSUE #7 (1958) Pussycat Papa: Jerry and Tuffy see an ad in a paper to take your boys out for winter fun. They decide they want Tom to take them out and that they are kinda like his kids, so they call Tom "Daddy", and then pretend to be his kids by giving him a hug and a kiss.

Goldkey Tom and Jerry #237 (August 1967) : Tom wants to play with dolls. The kid won't play with dolls if there's mice. Jerry and Tuffy sneak back in and dress as dolls, and Tom kisses them goodnight

Buddies Thicker than Water (1962) Tom is freezing and starving while Jerry is hidden in a penthouse. After Jerry drags him inside and warms him with a heated blanket, Tom gives Jerry a kiss on the cheek. Jerry then makes him instant food.

Chuck Jones [1963-1967] 4

Is There a Doctor in the Mouse? (1964) Jerry invents a potion that makes him go fast and eats Tom's food before he can. After eating the banana, he tries running away in the peel. Tom picks him up and peels back the banana peel. Jerry gives him a peck on the lips, then escapes right as the potion fails.

Ah, Sweet Mouse Story of Life (1965) Tom gets stretched after chasing Jerry down a downtake pipe. Jerry helps him escape by blowing the air horn. Tom thanks him by giving him many kisses on his forehead. Jerry wants more kisses, but Tom realizes Jerry tastes delicious and tries to bite him. Tom is still long.

The Brothers Carry Mouse Off (1965) Tom puts on a costume and perfume to look like a female mouse. Jerry instantly falls for it and kisses his hand and arms. However, many other mice also fall for Tom, and so Jerry continues kissing a path away from Tom. Jerry then watches the disguised Tom get chased by a bunch of cats as the camera pans to a heart on the tree and then the end credits.

Guilded Mouse ille (1967) Tom gets blasted back to the stone age. Tom is about to clobber Jerry when Jerry offers him the bone he was nibbling on to share. While nibbling, Tom accidentally kisses Jerry. Realizing he is tasty, he gives Jerry several kisses on the cheek. Then tries to actually eat him. (Counting under other)

The Tom and Jerry Comedy show (1980-1982) 1

Farewell, Sweet Mouse: Tom floods Jerry's mouse hole, the resulting water pushes him into the rain and pops his balloon, leading Tom to gleefully think he drowned. When Tom gets back, he looks at a picture of him and Jerry, imagines Jerry as an angel, and Angel Jerry kisses picture him's cheek. Hawkeye Tom: in a move that's a similar to Sufferin' Cats and A Mouse in the House , Jerry puts himself in Tom's hands then kisses Tom's cheek before sticking his tongue out in taunt to a bird.

Bottled Up Emotions: Love potion (in bubble form) hits Jerry and he falls in love with Tom. Kisses his nose. Kisses his hand when Tom tries to shove him off. Kisses feet when Tom tries to push him away.

Return to Sender: Flower shop owner picks Tom and Jerry by scruffs of their neck, sings "take a chance, to romance", then forces them to kiss

Splinter of Discontent: Tom begs Jerry and Tuffy for help as Tyke has a splinter and Spike is threatening to hurt him. Jerry agrees to help and Tom kisses his feet.

Catitude Adjustment: Tom had been under a spell that made him too clingey/nice to Jerry. At the end of the episode they get him back to normal and he chases Jerry again. Jerry makes a stop gesture, Tom leans down and glares, Jerry gives Tom a kiss with a heart to Tom's confusion.

From Riches to Rags: Jerry, after losing to Tom all day and going to bed starving, has a dream where Tom is his servant and Jerry harasses Tom until they get into a fight. After getting hit by a chandelier he wakes up, runs downstairs to Tom who is asleep, gives him a hug and kiss on the nose, lookes sheepish, kicks his nose and then the episode ends as they chase one another.

Kiss and Makeup: Toodles (Called Misty Makeup Marvin in this short) has magic and wants to kiss Tom with this evil Lipstick in hopes to mind control(?) him so she can retire in the haunted mansion he lives in. Jerry and Tuffy have been trying to prevent this kiss from happening. When Toodles goes for a kiss on the couch, Jerry jumps in between and gets a kiss from both of them on the cheeks. Then Jerry turns into a bat.

Mirror Image: Tom gets stuck in the mirror dimension and there's an evil mirror Tom in the real world. Tuffy, who is trapped with Tom, tells Jerry to make the evil Tom touch the mirror so they can get out. Jerry does so, and Tom escapes with both Tuffy and Jerry in his hands. He gives them both a kiss on a cheek before laughing at his mirror self's misfortune.

Pumpkin Punks: Jerry is hiding in root vegetables, popping out to taunt Tom, then going back underground. When Tom gets tired, he pops out and gives him a kiss on the cheek with lots of hearts (then waves and runs away so Tom can chase him)

Tom and Jerry Movie (2021) 1

1:33:50 Spike, Tom and Jerry begin to chase and start to destroy the wedding. Human cast gives them disapproving look. Spike apologies and Tom kisses Jerry to show they are friends. Tom closes ending curtain then goes back to chasing Jerry

Tom and Jerry in New York (2021-) 1

Dream Team: Tom dreams he's in a basketball game against Butch, but due to cheating/skill he has no points. Jerry climbs into the ball and helps him win, however becomes very dizzy. When he topples out of the ball, Tom picks him up and gives him several kisses. Then he gives the real Jerry an ice cream bar, to Jerry's confusion. I can’t even begin to call them all but… if you bear with me, I shall try.

Here are a few games that I always found funny additions!

Starting off strong we have Journey to the West: Undersea Adventure (2021)! I have never seen it but LOOK AT IT.... THEY FISH

Six-eared Monkey (2021) where Six Ears goes back in time, accidentally adopts Wukong not knowing he is his future enemy and gives his life to save Child-Wukong despite knowing who he grows up to be.

Wukong's Christmas Adventure (2019) is like... saving Ruphdolh or something and Wukong is going through a mid-life crisis and also kinda depressed but CHRISTMAS. Also the Erlang and Nezha models in this movies are TERRIFYING... and also they have Wukong rap so take a look.

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013) is weird but like in a GREAT way like... I love the monster designs they give Wukong, Bajie, and Wujing, it is such a different vibe then any other movie I have seen and Honestly LOVE It for that. Really sells just how HUMAN Sanzang is dealing with POWERFUL YAO that could kill him in a second.

Bling (2016) is strong that it didn't hAVE to be Xiyouji coded characters like the Monkey, Pig, and Frog are robot storage performers, wannabe heroes and they follow their creator who is trying to propose to his girlfriend but there really is not journey or ANY need to have the robot being Wukong, Bajie, and Wujing.

Spark: A Space Tail (2016) is also BARELY a Xiyouji film but like it does have a monkey with a staff and turns out he is the son of a king and a queen of monkey planet. Really more like Lion King with the evil uncle trying to take over but with space monkeys.... and also Bajie is there.

Mo mo King (2011) is something I'm not completely sure what's it about but just that it is like a whole monkey island that Wukong-like protag works at... and also Bajie is there.

Devil's Chip (2002) again NO idea what it is really about but there is space and time travel and for some ungodly reason no wukong from what I have seen but Sanzang and Bajie company the space/time travler

Flying Monkid (1996) I have no idea why this was ever MADE like there is barely a connection to Wukong and every other demon is new or some kind of version that is barely recognizable, not to mention the animation is barely any better than Pixal art.

Flying Superboard (1990) I always just found this one strange from the animation to the art style to the design choices. Like making Wukong some kind of skateboard, nunchuck, mouse-looking creature and giving Bajie a machine gun is.... something. I have no idea what they did to Wujing, made him like a bat, goblin thing.

Midnight Goku (1989) is like a sci-fi detective story where the protag has like computer eyes that can see through people and a bo-staff and honestly, I haven't seen but just the STRETCH they use to make this Wukong-related is so insane like would have never thought of it.

Little Wukong (1987) honestly not SURE what this story is even about but like... it is nearly lost media, this is so obscure and out of the way I have a feeling it was probs a children's education show or something but idk.

The Legend of Red Boy (1989) is something that looks like candy land spat out and while I have not seen it I am so sure that it is filled with nonsensical elements I cannot begin to describe.

King Kong's Adventures in the Heavenly Palace (1959) is... more of a crossover than anything else. Just imagine a movie where instead of Wukong destroys heaven... it is Kind Kong. Legit THE king Kong from the OTHER MOVIES YES.

Pink Journey to the West (2015) is honestly not that strong I would say besides that it is just Journey to the West but they are all girls... haven't seen it but who knows maybe it is good!

I know I haven't posted anything about the Strikes in a while, but I just wanted to drop this little anecdote for the conversations of 'well, if the writers want more money, they should writer things people actually want to watch':

Apparently the writers for the Sonic the Hedgehog movies were approached by Warner Bros to make a Tom and Jerry movie. And the moment those writers DARED to say 'hey, maybe a Tom and Jerry movie should... Focus on TOM and JERRY rather than some random human characters', Warner Bros booted them from the project and we ended up getting that... Confusing Tom and Jerry movie back in 2021 instead.

So, again, for every Nepotism baby who will just write whatever because they know they have mummy and daddy's money to fall back on, there are a dozen who actually want to write good scripts but are either browbeaten into writing crap or dismissed by executives and producers who are horrifically disconnected from what audiences want.
