1899 (Season 1, 2022, Germany)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2022
Creators: Jantje Friese & Baran bo Odar
Director: Baran bo Odar
Mini-review:
Being a huge fan of Dark, 1899 was without a doubt one of my most-awaited TV shows of 2022. I can't truly say this reaches the same levels of magnificence as that one, at least not for now, but it's still a thoroughly engrossing first season and a great start for the show. The production and costume design are splendid and the whole story keeps on your toes while you try to come up with theories. It's not as complex as Dark, but the themes it spotlights are truly interesting (saying what they are would be a spoiler, though). That being said, what I enjoyed most was the crazy diversity: we get characters from all over the world, each of them speaking their own language and played by top-class actors. From what I've read, at least 10 different languages are spoken regularly through the 8 episodes. The whole cast does a fantastic job (special kudos to Maciej Musiał for becoming my new white-boy-crush) and I really hope we get another season, cause I really, really want to know more about the characters and what's going on. And the ending is jaw-dropping too. Netflix, do something properly and renew this, please.

Court of Darkness: The Moment
Tumblr media
Description: A series of short stories with MC (named Carla) and the princes showing the moment MC knew she and her prince’s relationship would last. For Voltage Fandom Content Creation Challenge @voltagefandomproject
Some content may contradict Makai Book 2s. But then, Court of Darkness events often contradict book ones and twos anyways thanks to alternate timelines so 🤷‍♀️
Princes: Guy, Lynt, Roy, Rio
GUY - My Queen
Today is an important day. Guy is at an Avari convention at Colde, and it is the first public event Carla is acknowledged as Guy’s paramour. For weeks, Carla studies Avari history, memorizing countless noble families and their lineages. She trains on the proper ways to speak with dignitaries, absorbing all she can through countless lessons from Guy and, when he is not available, Jasper.
At the convention, Carla and Guy spend most of their time apart, Guy being surrounded by dignitaries and members of the royal court. When Carla isn’t conversing with nobles, she’s standing with Jasper. As the hours tick away, Carla becomes more anxious.
“Jasper, have I done something wrong?” Carla pitches her voice low so that only Jasper can hear. “Does Guy not want me at his side?”
“Not at all, Miss Carla. You have performed brilliantly.” Jasper notes a small frown on Carla’s face. Jasper adds, “So brilliantly that he’s been able to focus on more important discussions.”
“I want to believe you Jasper. Or at least hear it from him.” She sighs, embarrassed to admit a need for reassurance.
“His Highness has his own ways of showing he cares. He—“ Jasper stops talking and moves his head, seeing Guy motion a command with two fingers from across the room. Jasper nods and turns to Carla. “I suspect he might show you now. Go to him.”
Carla walks with steady steps to Guy. As she approaches Guy, she sees an older portly man gesturing to a much younger woman. When Carla is within feet of the older man, she catches their conversation. “So as you can see, my daughter would be a much better prospect as a paramour for you. Wouldn’t you agree?” The young woman eyes Guy for what he is to her—the ultimate prize on the Saligia marriage market.
Before Carla can react, Guy pulls her flush against his side. His arm encircles her waist possessively, yet with a touch of tenderness. Guy’s eyes flash ominously at the man. “As you can see, I already have my Queen. And soon she will be yours.” Guy turns to leave. Carla follows, holding her head high.
The pair walk to an empty balcony. Guy mutters “What a bother.” He stares out at the night sky.
“Are the nobles always like that with you?” Carla grasps the sleeve of Guy’s formal jacket.
“Yes. You need to be aware of what it is like.” The pieces start falling into place for Carla. Guy not only declared his intentions for her to the noble (and countless others watching them), he no longer shielded Carla from the realities of the scheming Avari court. In short, he loved her and now he trusted her.
Carla wraps her arms around Guy, burying her head in his jacket. “Thank you,” she whispers.
“You’re a strange creature.” Guy tilts Carla’s chin up so she can see his crimson eyes; they blaze with power and passion. Guy smirks as he says, “but you’re mine.”
“Just as you are mine?” Carla matches Guy’s smirk. She closes her eyes and leans upward for a kiss. As Guy’s lips are a breath away from Carla, he murmurs “Yes.”
LYNT - A Sleepless Night
Carla excuses herself from the S:Rank lounge and asks Lynt to accompany her. Her eyes are dull, her forehead sweaty. Lynt wraps his cloak around Carla’s shivering shoulders as they leave. Carla holds her hands to her ears, complaining of intense throbbing whenever someone speaks loudly—Toa and Guy’s sparring and Fenn’s subsequent laughter causing the most recent pain.
Lynt mews with understanding and sadness. Carla has a cold and ear infection. He knows it will be difficult for her to sleep. Lynt leads Carla to his room and asks Tino to prepare green tea and to get medicine from the infirmary.
“At once! Miss Carla, don’t despair, you’ll get better soon!” Tino claps his hands enthusiastically. Carla covers her ears and trudges to Lynt’s bedroom, wincing at Tino’s well-meaning enthusiasm. Lynt envelops Carla in a soft blanket and lays her in his bed. He then moves to wait in the sitting room until Tino arrives back.
Lynt gives Carla a spoonful of medicine and makes her drink the tea. Afterwards, Carla tosses and turns most of the night. Carla’s vaguely aware of Lynt moving a lot, and something being poured down her throat at regular intervals, but she is so exhausted and in pain she barely notices. When the medicine starts to work, Carla settles and sleeps a few hours. Long after sunrise, Carla awakens and is startled at what she sees.
Her feet, which are sticking out from underneath the blanket, are covered in a pair of woolen Akedian socks she was definitely not wearing the night before. A cold wet cloth is magically set to her forehead. Bowls of broth and medicine bottles are waiting at a nearby table. But most importantly, she sees Lynt’s face inches from hers. His eyelids are droopy and bags are under his eyes from lack of sleep. Lynt holds Carla in a loose embrace as he strokes her hair.
“L-Lynt, did you sleep at all?” A gigantic yawn escapes Lynt’s lips as he tucks Carla’s hair behind her ears. “No. You were quite sick.” Lynt gestures to a pile of dirty tissues and towels by the side of the bed. Carla’s face turns red in embarrassment. “Oh God, did Tino care for me like this?”
“No, me. Tino’s voice seemed painful to you, so I watched you.” Carla put the pieces together—the empty medicine bottles, soup bowls, socks on her feet—Lynt took care of her throughout the night alone. When Lynt put his mind to do something, it was done. Lynt pats Carla on the head. “Hmmm. You seem better now. Good.”
“I wish I could say the same for you,” Carla murmurs. “You need your rest.”
“But who will watch over you?”
Carla chuckles quietly. “I can’t believe I have to convince you to sleep.” She places her arms around Lynt’s shoulders, scratching the back of his head. “You’ll watch over me in your dreams, just like I will for you, yes?”
“Hmmm. Yes.” Lynt’s eyes close as he gives in to slumber. “Love you Carla.”
“And I you Lynt.”
ROY - The Letter
From the first time Roy and Carla express their love for one another, Roy’s heart is light and full of joy. Everything about Carla from her empathy to her diligent persistence to the sparkle in her eyes enchants him. Roy is utterly spellbound with Carla; so much so, that it’s only a few weeks into his courtship that he begins sketching ideas for potential rings to give her.
Carla is equally taken with Roy. But a shadow of fear enters her heart. Roy has always been kind, gracious, patient with everyone, and ever passionate for his country. But now Carla sees a new kind of passion to Roy—one that’s intense, playful, romantic—geared for only her. Carla wonders when that passion will fade away and Roy will come to his senses and realize she’s not good enough for him.
About two months into their relationship, Roy and Carla sit on a L-shaped couch in the rooftop garden. Roy is sitting up, his legs draped across the cushions on one side of the couch. He works on grading papers and reading various royal correspondence. Carla sits between Roy’s legs, the back of her head resting against Roy’s chest as she read a book from one of Lynt’s lectures. Carla hums pleasantly as an arm circles her waist—Roy’s proved himself to be a cuddler these past weeks, especially when no one else is around.
Eventually, Carla falls asleep. She awakens some time later to a gentle breeze tickling her nose, the scent of roses in the air. Carla turns her head slightly against Roy’s chest and looks up. Roy is still sitting up, his back pressed against the cushions, both arms wrapped around Carla’s waist, his head held up by a cushion propped on top of the couch. Roy’s hair flutters in the wind as he sleeps blissfully, looking like the male-equivalent of sleeping beauty. Well, almost—his mouth is slightly open as he snores lightly.
Carla holds in her laughter—the perfect prince snores! A sense of contentment fills her. Roy is comfortable enough with her to fully relax like this, even if someone were to find them. Carla then hears the sound of papers rustling from the breeze. In Roy’s hands is a letter that stays in place within his grasp with magic. She recognizes the writing as Roy’s and sees it’s a letter to his mother. Carla intends to respect Roy’s privacy and not read it, but she sees her name in it. Curiosity gets the better of her as she scans the letter.
My soul has transformed from simply knowing her. Carla is goodness, kindness, and light. I want to provide her the same strength and love she gives me. You will adore her. I cannot conceive of possibly loving anyone else but her. Please, give us your and Father’s blessing.
Happy tears fall from Carla’s face. She sees Roy for who he is now—a man in love with a woman, who wants the approval of his family. Roy’s snoring stops. Carla kisses Roy lightly on his chin and snuggles back in his grasp. Suddenly, Roy’s arms squeeze her tightly—the letter floats from Roy’s hand and lands in his jacket pocket.
“I meant every word in that letter Heartspell,” Roy whispers in her ear. “Remember that.”
RIO - Bride of Voleri
There is not a precise moment Carla discovers her relationship with Rio is serious while they’re dating. The moments of friendship, happiness, and honesty all blend together into a ball of affection so profound that Carla never wishes to leave Saligia, even if she could.
The day of her engagement, however, Carla remembers in perfect detail.
Carla, Sherry, and Rio are in a potions class taught by Toa. Having finished their assignment early, Rio goes to another student to help them with their assignment. Carla smiles as she steals a look at Rio. “His kindness is so wonderful Sherry. I don’t know what I’d do without it.”
“I think the same about you Sunbeam!” Rio trots back to Carla and Sherry and holds Carla’s hand. His eyes light up as he stares at his and Carla’s interlocking fingers. “In fact, I don’t wanna live without your sweetness in my life. Marry me?”
Carla’s heart pounds in her chest. This is just like her Rio—oblivious to his surrounding and the gasp of shock from Sherry, his words of love spontaneous, sincere, and unadorned. “Rio I—“
A beaker falls to the ground. The entire classroom turns at the sound. “Prince Voleri just proposed marriage! How romantic!” The student whom Rio was helping out earlier points an excited finger at Carla and Rio, ignoring the beaker she broke. Most of the other students crowd around the pair, offering their congratulations. Several Voleri students shout “Three cheers to the future bride of Voleri!”
“AHEM.” Toa slams a book on his desk to gain everyone’s attention. Most of the students sheepishly duck their heads and start to apologize. Toa holds up a hand for silence.
“Carla—“ Toa begins.
“Toa I’m SO sorry—“ Carla stops talking as she looks at Toa. While clearly annoyed, the corners of Toa’s lips lift in a small smile. Toa continues. “You did not give Voleri a proper response.” Toa gestures to Rio; Rio’s hand still clutches Carla’s in nervous anticipation.
“YES!” Carla pulls Rio in for a hug. The class erupts in celebration.
A week later, Rio and Carla are back in potions class. The door flies open and Rio’s Dad, King Aiden, strides in, arms open as he spies Rio and Carla. “Ah, there she is, bride of Voleri!” Aiden’s voice booms with joy. “I could not wait a moment more to see you both!”
“Like father like son,” giggles Sherry.
Toa grumbles. “Can I have ONE class uninterrupted from Voleri?”

more rewatch thoughts: if i could have just one plot question answered by the showrunners, i’ve got to know whether or not the prometheus appearing and sending a signal out for help was supposed to be part of the simulation or not. because if it’s not… then what the fuck is sebastian thinking this whole time?? and what was the repeating simulation supposed to be?? because if there was never supposed to be a mysterious reappearing boat that lured the captain to change course and the sim is just supposed to be 8 days of everyone dealing with their inner demons, then this is a bonkers turn of events that came with zero warning.
but what i think is even crazier is if it is all part of the simulation plan (and daniel simply placed himself and elliot into the code of the ship knowing it would already be there) then sebastian is just… an incredible actor??? not tino mewes the real actor, but sebastian, first mate of the kerberos, is giving the goddamn performance of a lifetime pretending he has no idea what’s going on and being super against exploring this spooky ghost ship and i think that’s amazing

Trying REAL hard not to delude myself into thinking it means something that Tino Mewes deleted his "mutiny for three seasons or a movie" post and Alexandre Willaume edited "we will return" to "we will return to sender."

Lynt Akedia x MC (Retsuko)
Tumblr media
“Young Master Lynt, you must rise now! You have a lecture to teach that starts soon, and you promised to walk miss Retsuko to her class!”
Lynt awoke to his valet frantically shaking him awake, desperation evident in his tone. “Young Master! Please open your eyes!”
“I’m awake, Chino.” Lynt rubbed his eyes sleepily, sitting up while his valet fussed over him.
Tino breathed a sigh of relief, holding an armful of Lynt’s pressed clothing. “Young Master Lynt, you must begin rising earlier if you are to spend time walking miss Retsuko to her class.”
The sun shone through the light green curtains and fell on Lynt’s snowy white fluff of hair, making it shimmer as the prince slowly sat up and swung his legs over the edge of his soft, warm bed. “I know, Chino. Thank you for waking me up.” Lynt yawns, offering a sleepy smile to Tino.
“I have not seen miss Retsuko since yesterday morning, so perhaps it would be well to check in on her beforehand.” Tino lays the clothing out beside the sleepy prince, who nods.
“I will, do not fret.”
As Lynt unbuttoned his lime-colored pajama set and shimmied into his emerald formal wear, his mind drifted off to his lovely paramour. It was true, she had been away from him for almost a day and it somewhat worried him that she had not at least sent word yet.
As soon as Lynt had buttoned up his green drape, there came what sounded like a scratching by tiny paws at the door, accompanied by a high-pitched, worried voice.
“Master Lynt? Master Tino? Are you in there?”
Lynt’s eyebrows raised, and Tino rushed to the door to open it at his Master’s nod. “Hello? Master Lynt is currently here, yes..... oh?” his eyes slid down to the floor, whereupon was standing Retsuko’s familiar, Iggy. The fuzzy black cat flapped his small violet wings , looking up at Tino with wide yellow eyes.
“Master Tino! I have come to see Master Lynt about milady!” he mewed, curling his tail in the air.
“Of course. Come in, if you please- Master Lynt will be glad to hear from miss Retsuko.” Tino replied with a warm smile, opening the door to permit the black cat in to see his Master.
“Iggy?” Lynt raised his head sleepily, watching as the cat flew up to sit beside him on his jade bedsheets.
“Mew mew! I am sorry to tell you this, but milady is frightfully ill and must lay abed today!” He tucked his tail between his legs, pointed ears drooping as Lynt’s eyes opened fully.
“Retsuko is sick?” he sat straight up, a rather unusual sight for the lethargic prince. “In her chambers?”
“Yes, I am afraid, Master Lynt. Her head spins and she shivers all over! I have come out of her chambers to fetch Master Toa so he might make a medicine for milady!” Iggy’s wings folded on his fuzzy back as he sat.
“Toa...... leave that to me. Please remain with Retsuko in her chambers until I am able to bring her medicine.” Lynt immediately stood up, his emerald cloak swishing behind him. “And Chino.... please go to the kitchens at once and make Retsuko some of your soup with warm bread.”
“Yes, Young Master! I will hurry there at once!” Tino bows and rushes out at his Master’s command, leaving Lynt with Iggy. “Iggy, if you would please return to Retsuko’s side. I will ask Toa for medicine.” Lynt pats the kitten’s head and then sends him off.
“I feel so terrible..” Lynt frowns to himself as he walked through the hallway and down to the main living areas of the S ranks’ dorm hall. “Retsuko is sick and I haven’t done anything to help her.”
“Whatever is the matter, Master Lynt?” he came upon Roy suddenly, who was just walking out of the lounge with Grayson in tow.
“Oh, it’s you, Roy....”
“You look very sad. Is something the matter?” Roy offered him a gentle smile and patted his shoulder, sympathy in his golden eyes, and Lynt looks at his feet in shame.
“Retsuko is ill.”
“Ill, you say? Are you on your way to see her, then? I think she would be glad for your company. After all, Master Lynt, she adores you ever so much.” The Invidian prince assured him, trying to bolster his feelings.
“I adore Retsuko just as much... but I am afraid she will wither if I do not take careful precautions against every bad thing that might happen upon her.” Lynt sighed rather self-deprecatingly, and Roy looked stern.
“Lynt, you know very well she is capable of caring for herself. You mustn’t prevent her from living her life. However, you must remain strong and offer her your support through adversities.”
“I’m going to see Toa for medicine and Chino is making her soup.” Lynt looked up dolefully, his green eyes full of worry. “I sent her familiar back to keep her company while I make sure she has everything she might need.”
“Wonderful. She is well cared-for between you, Tino, and her lovely familiar. If I may be of any assistance, please call upon me! I will be happy to lend you my aid in curing miss Retsuko.” Roy offers him a flourishing bow, then walks with Grayson off to teach his lectures for the day.
Unusually rushed, Lynt walked at a brisk pace to the lounge with his thoughts, where Toa was sorting through boxes of phials and tubes with his valet, Knight.
“Toa. I need your help.”
The Qelsan prince looked up from his handful of glass phials, crystal blue eyes finding Lynt’s jade ones. “Lynt? I am surprised to find you up at this hour of the morning. Usually you are not active until early afternoon.”
“Chino woke me up.” he answered, impatiently brushing a lock of fluffy white hair out of his line of sight. “I need medicine for Retsuko... she fell ill this morning and I want to bring her something to make her aches go away. Her familiar had listed common symptoms of a fever....”
“A fever?” Toa’s eyebrows shot up. “I can find a potion that will ease her symptoms, but that is something that eventually her body must expunge on its own. As for further healing, all I can recommend is that she gets plenty of sleep and intakes regular amounts of fluids until she is feeling better.”
Lynt bobs his head in understanding. “I will make sure she is taken care of. However.... the lesson I am to teach this morning and afternoon will have to be covered by someone else.”
“I will talk to Roy and see if he will teach in your stead.” Toa agrees readily, beckoning for Knight and Lynt to follow him. “Come. I believe I have some of the potion Retsuko needs in my storage cabinet.”
Heading to the empty potions classroom, Toa opens the cupboard with a spell and reaches to the back, withdrawing a small red bottle with a cork stopper.
“Give her a teaspoon every eight hours until the fever subsides.” he handed it to Lynt, who dutifully tucked it into his pocket for safekeeping.
“Thank you, Toa. Excuse me, but I must be on my way to care for Retsuko.” With a swish of his emerald drape, Lynt had disappeared in the direction of the womens’ dorms.
As soon as he arrived at Retsuko’s door, Lynt knocked softly, stomach tightened with worry for his dear paramour. “Retsuko? It’s Lynt. I have come to see you.”
“Lynt?”
Retsuko’s weak voice sounded from inside, and Iggy’s paws clicked on the floor as he went to the door to nudge it open for Lynt.
The prince stepped inside and gave his paramour a soft, adoring smile.
She was curled into a ball under a layer of green linen blankets, her long brown hair spread like a halo on her down pillow. The light from the window illuminated her room, the sun making her hair shine like dark golden honey.
Iggy curled himself at her feet, nestling his tiny furry body in between the folds of the blankets on her bed to warm her as best he could.
Retsuko’s crimson eyes fluttered open at the sound of her prince’s voice.
“Retsuko.”
“Lynt?” she pushed herself into a sitting position, and Lynt gently draped his arms around her shoulders, wanting immediately to soothe her feverish body.
“I heard that you were feeling poorly, so I have come with medicine for you, and Chino will be here with fresh soup and bread momentarily.” Lynt strokes Retsuko’s cheeks with a fond smile, pressing kisses to her nose and forehead. “I would have come sooner had I known you were feeling like this.....”
“Mmmm..... Lynt.... wait.... you can’t be close to me, you’ll get sick too....” Retsuko protests, but Lynt nuzzles her neck instead.
“I do not mind. You will take care of me, yes?” the pure, adoring look in his sparkling eyes couldn’t be denied.
“Oh, you’re so adorably stubborn. I can’t even deter you for your own health.” Retsuko sighed and scooted over in her bed to make space for Lynt. “Come here, you.”
Lynt shuffled closer to Retsuko, gently pushing on her chest to get her to lay down. “I will administer your medicine now. Then maybe we can nap together.”
Retsuko nodded, watching Lynt take the teaspoon and potion that Toa gave him out of his pocket. “I will be here with you until you feel better.” He whispered, uncorking the bottle with magic and pouring the red liquid within into the spoon.
She obediently opened her mouth, and Lynt fed her the medicine while smiling softly. “Good girl.”
At that moment, there came a hesitant knock on the door, accompanied by Tino’s voice. “Hello? Miss Retsuko? Young Master has bade me bring you some bread, and I have soup too if you’re feeling up to it-”
Lynt immediately got up to open the door. “Chino. Thank you.”
“O-oh! Young Master Lynt!” Tino’s green eyes go wide. “Here is the food you asked for! I do hope miss Retsuko is well... I shall be in the valet’s lounge if you should have need of me!” he clumsily hands Lynt a wooden tray laden with steaming rolls, and a covered bowl full of aromatic miso soup. “Miss Retsuko, please feel well soon!”
Lynt accepts the food with a grateful nod to Tino and closes the door, bringing Retsuko the arrangement of food.
“It looks wonderful.” Retsuko smiles, wiping her nose with a tissue and looking with wide crimson eyes on Tino’s gift. “I’ll have to thank Tino later.”
“Chino is happy to help.” Lynt pulls her close, arranging the pillows in such a manner to where she could comfortably sit upright while she ate. “I will feed you, Retsuko.”
His paramour blushed despite her rather pale complexion. “Lynt, you don’t have to do that-”
“I want to.” he said stubbornly, scooting closer to her and tearing a corner off one of the steaming golden-brown buns. “Here. Try this.”
Lynt’s fingers gently push it into her mouth, and he smiles gently as Retsuko eats from his hand. “It is made with a special kind of wheat from Voleri called Voleri Gold. Rio likes this bread.”
Retsuko bobs her head, swallowing the bite he had fed her. “It tastes so good....”
“It makes the bread sweet. I like it too.” The corners of Lynt’s mouth turn upwards into a smile as he picks up the soup spoon and dips it into the aromatic soup.
“Soup, now.... open wide...”
Retsuko obediently opens her mouth, and her paramour inserts the spoon full of steaming golden liquid.
“Good girl.”
Tino’s miso soup had finely chopped vegetables that were relatively easy for Retsuko to consume as well as nourishing for her health. Lynt greatly appreciated his loyal valet at times like this.
Lynt takes his time gently feeding and cooing over Retsuko, all the while with a gentle, soothing smile on his lips. When she is finished eating, he set the tray down on the bedside table and took her into his arms to cradle her.
“We shall sleep together, yes? I do so adore having your warmth beside me....”
“Lynt....” Retsuko’s eyes found his, and she settled into his warm arms as he arranged the blankets around their bodies so as to create a little pocket of warmth around them.
“Sleep now. I will watch over you.” the prince assures her, his calming green eyes sparkling as his white lashes close. “I will keep you warm and hold you while you sleep.”
Retsuko buried her face in Lynt’s green cloak, curling up with her head laid on his chest. “Thank you, Lynt...”
“Sleep.” he reinforces gently, petting her hair with a fond smile. “I will wake you when it is time.” Retsuko’s crimson eyes flutter closed, and Lynt’s warm arms envelop her as he gently cradles her to sleep.
“Lovely......” as he looks down on his now sleeping paramour, Lynt is reminded of a small kitten. Her nose was slightly scrunched as she laid on his chest, and her face had regained its color slightly after he had fed her Tino’s generous creations.
“I wish to be with you like this every day.” the prince admits softly, his eyes fluttering closed as he pulled Retsuko’s body closer to his own to share in his heat. His head laid beside hers on the soft linen pillows, and in that moment he felt as if he was perfectly content.
“I love you, Retsuko.....”
