Why is Africa Poor
Why is Africa Poor
The African continent is three times larger than the European continent and possesses the shortest coastline of any other continent on planet Earth. This is a massive contributing factor to why Africa is poor because, unlike Europe, which had access to the Mediterranean Sea and the East Asian continent, which has excellent natural rivers and other major waterways, the African continent severelyâŚ

One thing about doing a Lazarus Pit read:
The Damian pregnancy timeline makes even less sense in my head, because if you're using Son of the Demon as the basis this probably happens either immediately before Jason, or perhaps during Jason and before Tim, because Talia implies in Bride that she hasn't seen Bruce again in the interim.
Which means if Ibn was actually canonical, he would be somewhere between 3-5 years old when Damian first appears after OYL. Because Tim is a very very very new Robin in Bride (he doesn't have his costume yet), and Talia has presumably been out of sight for a year having Ibn, and Jason probably became Robin at MOST 2 years prior to when Bride seems to be set, so if Talia had met Jason she has turned back up almost immediately after giving birth.
And realistically, even if we shove everything back to around the point of the 'wedding', that takes place when Dick is 18ish years old and at Hudson. I can only make Damian 6-7 by using that and Dick remaining Robin until 19.
Of course, as I have reiterated, the Demon Trilogy are specifically non-canonical and a separate universe, and instead interact with the Kingdom Come verse.
But as we know, Grant Morrison didn't read back to check any basic things like 'what happened with the pregnancy' and 'when did Bruce and Talia meet' (while Dick was at Hudson! Dick gets kidnapped from Hudson in the very second story!)
So given we have COIE AND Zero Hour AND Infinite Crisis to affect retcons to this timeline (rather than a certain writer not doing basic research, it was Superboy punching time) I presume we now push Bruce and Talia's first meeting well back. Because for timeline reasons for Damian to be 10 at OYL, Bruce and Talia need to have met at least 11 years earlier. Which in timeline maths puts it in Year 6 or so, when Dick is 13-14 years old.
Now I don't mind filling out Dick's teen years somewhat more, we retcon and ignore a whole lot of stuff that actually happened back then, but also it changes the dynamics somewhat, and makes me very sceptical of Son of the Demon being in any way canonical, because Bruce just decamped for a month or so to work for Ra's? With a 14 year old left behind with Alfred? Suuuure.
On the other hand, moving the timeline back to Year 6 for conception means we can move Bruce and Talia a lot closer in age. Year 1 is traditionally when Bruce is 25, so for Year 6 he's about 30. Talia, meanwhile, when she first meets Bruce is a 'medical student in Cairo', which suggests she has her Bachelors and is studying Medicine, so somewhere between 21-25. A 5-6 year age gap works nicely here and is perfectly reasonable.
Also in terms of storylines about how Talia could have thought there was a miscarriage (an EXTREMELY early one let me point out): she was actually pregnant with Athanasia AND Damian and miscarried Athanasia.
There. You're welcome.

@bluebellthesponge
Hmm I dunno tbh. I guess he's just easy to caricature. Bug eyes, crooked teeth, short stature, creepy voice. Even describing it probably puts a handful of characters in your mind.
According to the book The Animated Peter Lorre, there's at least 700+ lorre caricatures/impressions in cartoons. Tho he does include igor-type characters and impressions of an impressions but still, that's A LOT. Too bad the author doesn't give an explaination as to WHY Lorre is so parodied.
I know Looney tunes parodied Lorre because he was one of the popular stars of the day, Looney tunes parodies a lot of famous stars from the 40s so it's not really surprising. I also know in the 90s Looney tunes reboots you have a lot of lorre caricatures because the animators were fans of his movies.
I've heard a story about how Lorre stuck up for the animation union at Warner Brothers and got fired for it and that's why he is caricatured so often as a way to honor him. I kinda doubt the story is true because I can't find a source (and Lorre was more likely fired for beefing with Jack Warner) but if the story is true then it's super wholesome.
Something that is official is Charles Addams (the creator of the Addams Family) telling Lorre that he based Gomez Addams off of him. I know people hate on the 2019 Addams family movies for making Gomez ugly but it's comic accurate because he was based off of Lorre (and the governor of new york in the 30s but that's not important)
I've also heard Lorre parodies are possibly an antisemetic caricature because Peter Lorre was Jewish (his birthname is Laszlo LĂśwenstein and you can guess why he avoided using it) and let's be real, they often give him very unflattering portrayals. He barely played horror yet is the most affiliated with it, and his "creepier" roles sometimes hinged on the fact that he's a foreigner. It's not a good look. I get that he often avoided telling others he's Jewish and apparently a lot of people didn't know but there's still a weird layer of xenophobia to it that I kinds feel like kinda bleeds into some of the caricatures? That's just my opinion. Most Peter parodies are such copies of a copy that they're pretty far from the original source material. Still, it's food for thought. Especially when making your own Peter parody.
As far as I do know Lorre did like the caricatures, keeping some of the drawings fans sent him and even finding it amusing when others tell him how to do an impression of HIMSELF. Some of those saved fan drawings are still online. My favorite is the drawing of him as a turtle <3 Most of the caricatures was because he was pretty famous for the time.
The most amusing thing about peter parodies is that it's gone on so long that nobody really knows who lorre is, but they can identify his "image" in cartoons. Tim Burton didn't even know Lorre's name when he added Maggot in corpse bride, but he did know the voice and look. That's how it is. (Check out this maggot pin I got recently)
I know for Slappy, Kaz is actually a fan of Peter Lorre and collects his movies, hence why we have Slappy. I remember from Kaz's Facebook where he mentions Slappy saying he never knew just HOW many characters were inspired by lorre. There's also John K (creator of Ren and Stimpy, I know he's terrible) who mentioned on his personal blog that he's a big fan of Lorre which is why Ren from Ren and Stimpy is based off of him. I've notice Ren quotes some Peter Lorre movie quotes, aside from his famous catchphrase "YOU EEEDIOT" of course. (Check out this Ren and Stimpy comic where Ren meets Joel Cairo, a character Peter Lorre played)
I just think it's neat. He shows up everywhere all the time :) I made a joke Thomas The Tank Engine Peter Parody but @thekhaotickrab messaged me saying they found an actual Thomas character with Lorre's voice which is pretty hilarous. Many of these I find amusing because there's no reason for it to exist. Yeah, there's a Peter Parody transformer named Cosmos and he likes scaring people because he's lonely. Yeah, there's several in Scooby Doo for some reason. Yeah he's GOMEZ ADDAMS. He's also a GPS in hotel Transylvania 2. He's also a literal egg with legs in digimon. He's also a lamp.
I heard Lorre's dream was to continue to act forever. He sorta got that wish because he keeps respawning in cartoons forever. I hope this tradition keeps up. Slappy gets a lot of shit but I'm forever grateful to that ugly little fish for introducing me to all of this <3 May the Peter Parody live on forever!

Fantasy March: Omnibus
As I prepare for the future of this blog (and there is a future, if anybody's wondering), I find myself looking back at the good times, when I had the time to watch a movie a day and write a blog about it, which...yeah, wasn't even sustainable for me in 2021, so make of that what you will. ANYWAY, I decided that I would bring all of these posts together in an omnibus of sorts, so anybody that wanted to read these posts could find them all easily in one place. This, alongside other archives, are going to be pinned to the top of my page, and will serve as a long index of the films in the appropriate genres. The goal? To extend these archives as I go along, and have this running index for my blog. And again...there will be additions...
SO! With that, feel free to check out these films in the fantasy genre, which is another one of those overlap-prone genres, but with a very distinct vibe to them. The definition of the fantasy genre, for the sake of this blog, is any film where the plot is forwarded or the universe is built upon supernatural phenomena that cannot be explained by scientific means. That includes science fiction means, so no Star Wars, and no superhero films, but possibly some science fantasy. Any films you'd like to see in this list? Comment, reblog, message me, whatever! I'm always open to suggestions to add to my ever-building master list of fantasy films. And check out the other indices to come!

Mississippi River
Sunday, April 7, 2024
Dora and Tim have a great time playing in the wet morning grass outside the Paducah Cracker Barrel. There are smells beneath every shrub. Then we load up and head out toward Missouri.
As we get closer to the Mississippi River we see more levees, including this bridge that looked like the steel overhead could be lowered to protect the town.
We drove through Cairo (pronounced Karo like the syrup) at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It is the only town protected by levees on all four sides.
It was depressing to see what the change to overland trucking has wrought to what used to be a prosperous river city. The town was full of disintegrating abandoned homes, factories, and businesses.
We cross the Ohio River into Illinois and parallel the Mississippi through very rural roads. Much more interesting than the interstates.
We finally cross the Mississippi River into Missouri at Cape Girardeau ("jir-AR-doh"). Beautiful bridge into a much larger city than Jeanne expected. According to the city website, they had 15,000 visitors for the 2017 eclipse and are expecting 20,000 this year.
Compared to the two other eclipses we have seen, they donât seem prepared. There are no signs for places to camp or park.
To our horror, we have no cell service. It must be all the visitors saturating the cell towers. We canât look up information or addresses with any reliability. Phone calls donât go through. Text messages are hit or miss.
We stop at the local sports field where there are a number of youth games on the multiple fields. We look for an official to ask where RV parking is. Two friendly Parks & Rec men say they donât know, we canât stay here and hereâs the name of a good BBQ place.
After they leave, a Black woman named Bertha comes over and tells us that we can camp at a vacant lot near her house, and that we should also try the casino. The casino was on our list of places to try, so we thanked her and went there.
Did I mention that it was raining again? This is so depressing for eclipse watching. Itâs less than 24 hours to totality and the weather is miserable.
To our surprise, the casino was not charging for overnight parking. They were very gracious and friendly. We had a Zoom call at 3:30, so we went into the casino to mooch wifi.
The casino had a spot set up to take selfies, so we took advantage. The manager helpfully took it for us. Notice the raincoats.
The casino had a display of a DeLorean sports car. To our surprise, someone got in and drove it out the revolving door. It barely fit, so they were very careful.
We went back to the casino every couple hours to check the weather. Not good. We make plans to leave in the morning, but where?
Timâs brother Andy arrives and parks next to us in the parking lot. Andy says he has been ODing on cloud coverage sites. Us, too. If you ever want a list, we have a half-dozen bookmarked, and Andy even has more.
We have dinner together on in our RV and make more plans. Bertha stopped by to make sure we were ok. Amazingly considerate.
The Mississippi is close so we take Dora for a long walk on and around the levees. This is the same bridge from the shore.
We watch barges and their tugboats.
We speculate on the sign on the bridge and then zoom in to see that it marks the clearance under the bridge.
The sky is stormy-looking, but not actively raining. We decide to check the forecasts in the casino in the morning (still no cell service) and decide then.

Iâd self medicate too if I knew my career predicated on my continued relationship with Tim Burton. She probably realizes if he gets cancelled, bites the dust, or has a falling out with him then her opportunities may dry up. I mean what of her work was notable that was not linked with him or Netflix?
Girly better carve out her place in the industry real quick. Or find another director to entangle herself with.
Let's play a game đŻđď¸đđ˝đď¸đŻ
What do these bitches have in common?
All of these characters are [in some way, shape/form, and to varying degrees] angsty teens with Mommy Issues.
I think she FAFO regarding the current limitations of her place in Hollyweird. A barely 5' tall actress whose voice makes her sound perpetually 16 (holy shit, I needed her to STFU in a few of the scenes in Finestkind) doesn't have that many options for diverse roles other than High School Student or Girlfriend. While she can't fix her height (and if she fucks with her baby face any more than it is, she'll ruin it), she can find a voice trainer/vocal coach to get her voice to sound more mature. Maybe that's why she took up smoking after Cairo.
Scream was notable, but we know what happened there. Her next three live action/unreleased roles aren't horror, so that's something?
I don't think she'd have a falling out with Tim, but her picking up the Carter-Depp mantle is proving to be a challenge. I'm sad that I don't think that he'd cast her as the 50 Foot Woman because how fucking hilarious would that be, to go from 5 to 50 đ
If she was really smart (...Savvy?), she'd go back to Disney and take up the Pirates mantle. That's big money â¨foreverâ¨, and she wouldn't ever have to worry about the lack of jobs (or her limitations) again. She'd be able to do whatever music or behind the scenes crap she wanted to do. She has the perfect comedic timing for it, and there's no better casting for Captain Jack's daughter than her. Except for Lily Depp, and she's fucking terrible.
Unfortunately there are people who can't stand her/find her annoying, so there's also that.

Palestinian Genocide: Displacement part 1
Nearly two million Palestinians, almost the entire population of Gaza, have been displaced since October 2023 (14).
On 13 October 2023, Israel ordered all Palestinians in Gaza City and its surrounding region to move southward, across Wadi Gaza. The separation of ânorthâ and âsouthâ Gaza crystallised into a fortified and de facto internal border roughly two kilometres north of Wadi Gaza, known as the âNetzarim corridorâ. It is important to note that the displacement of Palestinians since October 2023 occurred from the comparatively water-rich north to the arid south, and from the more fertile east to the dunes along the shoreline to the west (see Chapters 4, 3: Destruction of Agriculture and Water Resources, Displacement).
There are historical echoes to this displacement. Throughout the 1948 war, the Israeli military attempted to push Palestinians from north to south and across the border to Egypt. The Israeli military was unable to dislodge the Egyptian army from the road between Rafah and Gaza, thus Palestinian refugees remained in this sliver â or âstripâ â of coastal Palestine. Approximately 70% of the Gazan population of 2.3 million are refugees, expelled into Gaza by Zionist paramilitary organisations and the Israeli military from 247 Palestinian trading towns, farming villages, and localities along the southern coast of Palestine, subsequently destroyed by the Israeli military(15). By the time a ceasefire between Israel and Egypt was reached at the start of 1949, roughly 200,000 Palestinian refugees were trapped in an enclave slightly larger than 1% of Mandate-era Palestine with a prewar population of 80,000 (16).
In 1952, Israel demanded of the UN and Egypt that the Palestinian refugee population in Gaza be moved to Egyptâs Western Desert(17). In the early 1950s, Israeli raids on the Palestinian refugee camps and on Egyptian forces in Gaza led the UN and Egypt to make plans to relocate Palestinian refugees

However, Salman Abu-Sittaâs figures list a total of 531 localities, these includes 77 destroyed Bedouin villages in southern Palestine (p.71). Ilan Pappe, in The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, discusses the origins of this Israeli policy.
