Why is Africa Poor
Why is Africa Poor
The African continent is three times larger than the European continent and possesses the shortest coastline of any other continent on planet Earth. This is a massive contributing factor to why Africa is poor because, unlike Europe, which had access to the Mediterranean Sea and the East Asian continent, which has excellent natural rivers and other major waterways, the African continent severely…

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday denounced the Israeli military's total decimation of Gaza's universities during floor remarks on protests that have broken out on American college campuses over the past several weeks.
"There are no protests on the college campuses in Gaza," said Sanders (I-Vt.), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. "You know why? Because every one of the 12 universities in Gaza has been bombed and destroyed."
Sanders' remarks came during a floor debate over a Republican resolution ostensibly aimed at condemning antisemitism on college campuses. GOP lawmakers and President Joe Biden have repeatedly smeared campus protests against Israel's assault on Gaza as antisemitic and ignored the prominent role Jewish students have played in the nationwide demonstrations.
After Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) attempted to pass the GOP antisemitism resolution via unanimous consent, Sanders—who is Jewish—rose to block the measure, criticizing it as insufficient and proposing an alternative that condemns antisemitism as well as all other "forms of bigotry in this country, whether on college campuses or elsewhere, including Islamophobia, homophobia, racism, and the growing attacks against the Asian American community."
Sanders' proposed resolution also expresses support for "the right of students and all Americans to peacefully protest," whereas Scott's measure attacks recent campus protests as "hotbed[s] of blatantly antisemitic rhetoric and action."
"The fact of the matter is that 67% of Americans, according to recent polls, support the United States calling for a cease-fire, and 60% oppose sending more weapons to Israel," Sanders said. "And that's what the protesters are talking about: They are asking why it is we are complicit in the humanitarian disaster taking place in Gaza."
Tumblr media
According to the United Nations, more than 80% of the Gaza Strip's schools have been damaged or reduced to ruins by Israeli forces since October, including all of the enclave's universities.
Last month, a group of U.N. experts said that "it may be reasonable to ask if there is an intentional effort to comprehensively destroy the Palestinian education system, an action known as 'scholasticide.'"
"The persistent, callous attacks on educational infrastructure in Gaza have a devastating long-term impact on the fundamental rights of people to learn and freely express themselves, depriving yet another generation of Palestinians of their future," the experts added. "Students with international scholarships are being prevented from attending university abroad."
American campus protests against Israel's assault on Gaza have offered some measure of hope to Palestinian students whose lives have been thrown into chaos by the U.S.-backed war.
Hala Sharaf, a second-year medical student who moved to Cairo to resume her studies amid Israel's assault, told Al Jazeera that the U.S. student campus demonstrations "have made us feel so hopeful for rejecting what America and Israel are doing to us."
"The student protests in America make me feel like I'm not alone," said Sharaf. "My message to them is to keep the focus on Gaza. Don't forget about Gaza."

One thing about doing a Lazarus Pit read:
The Damian pregnancy timeline makes even less sense in my head, because if you're using Son of the Demon as the basis this probably happens either immediately before Jason, or perhaps during Jason and before Tim, because Talia implies in Bride that she hasn't seen Bruce again in the interim.
Which means if Ibn was actually canonical, he would be somewhere between 3-5 years old when Damian first appears after OYL. Because Tim is a very very very new Robin in Bride (he doesn't have his costume yet), and Talia has presumably been out of sight for a year having Ibn, and Jason probably became Robin at MOST 2 years prior to when Bride seems to be set, so if Talia had met Jason she has turned back up almost immediately after giving birth.
And realistically, even if we shove everything back to around the point of the 'wedding', that takes place when Dick is 18ish years old and at Hudson. I can only make Damian 6-7 by using that and Dick remaining Robin until 19.
Of course, as I have reiterated, the Demon Trilogy are specifically non-canonical and a separate universe, and instead interact with the Kingdom Come verse.
But as we know, Grant Morrison didn't read back to check any basic things like 'what happened with the pregnancy' and 'when did Bruce and Talia meet' (while Dick was at Hudson! Dick gets kidnapped from Hudson in the very second story!)
So given we have COIE AND Zero Hour AND Infinite Crisis to affect retcons to this timeline (rather than a certain writer not doing basic research, it was Superboy punching time) I presume we now push Bruce and Talia's first meeting well back. Because for timeline reasons for Damian to be 10 at OYL, Bruce and Talia need to have met at least 11 years earlier. Which in timeline maths puts it in Year 6 or so, when Dick is 13-14 years old.
Now I don't mind filling out Dick's teen years somewhat more, we retcon and ignore a whole lot of stuff that actually happened back then, but also it changes the dynamics somewhat, and makes me very sceptical of Son of the Demon being in any way canonical, because Bruce just decamped for a month or so to work for Ra's? With a 14 year old left behind with Alfred? Suuuure.
On the other hand, moving the timeline back to Year 6 for conception means we can move Bruce and Talia a lot closer in age. Year 1 is traditionally when Bruce is 25, so for Year 6 he's about 30. Talia, meanwhile, when she first meets Bruce is a 'medical student in Cairo', which suggests she has her Bachelors and is studying Medicine, so somewhere between 21-25. A 5-6 year age gap works nicely here and is perfectly reasonable.
Also in terms of storylines about how Talia could have thought there was a miscarriage (an EXTREMELY early one let me point out): she was actually pregnant with Athanasia AND Damian and miscarried Athanasia.
There. You're welcome.

director's cut meme: estate? 🙏🙏🙏
manor horror! manor horror! The working title of the Damian shows up to a haunted manor fic (beyond “manor horror”) was “there are many rooms in my father’s house and all of them are trying to kill me.” I knew that I wanted to write this fic basically as soon as I saw the brief for the Gotham Horror zine. I don’t know that people generally apply to a zine with a full outline and opening scene pre-written, but I sure did! It was extremely lucky that a) the zine mods liked that idea and b) I frontloaded all of this quite so significantly, because final pieces were due the week after I got back from our honeymoon and “hello my love let me hide in the hotel room for a couple hours to write my horror fic” is not really the move.
Because this was a zine fic, I also couldn’t talk about the writing process while it was happening, which felt like several months of sitting on my hands and squirming. I love to talk about writing! I love to talk about process! So thank you for asking about this one!
I was really going for a particular mid-century horror writing style here (which is probably obvious.) I read a LOT of Shirley Jackson in prep for this (actually, I think I read The Sundial on your rec!) and flipped through some of Bradbury’s horror stories. I did hunt down some Arabic horror writing to see what tropes Damian might have in the back of his mind beyond my vague memories of the spookier bits of 1001 Nights. Not much genre writing gets translated into English, and most of what I found was pretty modern, but I had a good time with it! (I couldn’t find a full English translation of The Cairo Maquette but I would like to read one.) Also I flipped through a lot of photos of very crusty neo-Gothic interiors to pastiche together in my head. Thank God I didn’t actually have to draw anything.
Because I decided to write from Damian’s POV, I also needed to actually read his comics. So I read the Morrison run cherry-picked for his appearances, and also the Tomasi Batman and Robin. (One of these was a MUCH more positive experience than the other.)
I had a bit of a time figuring out what Damian should sound like. Obviously he’s a kid, but he’s a very precocious kid who has always been treated as a miniature adult, and who is vaguely embarrassed whenever he does something he thinks is childish. I was aiming for the kind of diction that a kid gets when they read a lot and talk to adults a lot and basically never interact with other kids, and I think I landed there. (I did hit a moment where I was extremely tight on word count and had two scenes left to write and my editing note to myself was “does Damian need to talk quite so much like a dictionary.” Maybe at some point I will go back and undo some of my word count edits.)
I also needed Damian to be frightened, but Damian is not someone who is going to acknowledge fear, especially right after leaving the League! So I had to find ways to convey the sense of creeping unease when I couldn’t have Damian’s POV actually admit that anything was scary. Once again thank you Shirley Jackson for doing this way better so that I could imitate it (We Have Always Lived in the Castle in particular.)
The other thing I struggled a bit with was which of the Robins would actually appear in the fic. I really wanted the unsettling vibes of Damian being alone in this strange house with even stranger adults, which I knew would be diminished by the presence of another kid, even a hostile one. So Tim isn’t there. Dick is, because Dick is not a kid to Damian, but also, Dick is an ambiguous ghost.
(more below the cut, because Damian isn't the only one capable of talking like a dictionary)
I actually had a whole ending to that scene with Dick in the front hallway that I scrapped because it was before I had decided Dick was the daytime face of the nighttime Robin:
“What,” comes a growl from behind them, “is the meaning of this?” Father is standing in the hall with his arms crossed, a long, bulky shadow. Damian lets the umbrella fall to his side and squares his chin. “Father,” he begins, “we were--” but he doesn’t know how to finish. They hadn’t been training, not really. Damian had been using an umbrella as a weapon, of all the ridiculous, childish things. Grayson folds at the waist and lands neatly on the marble tile. “We were goofing off, Bruce,” he says. “It was my idea. Thought I’d come by and introduce myself to your new one, since you seemed unlikely to bother.” A hallway light flickers to life as he steps forward. Father’s eyes narrow. Damian is aware of a sense of rising pressure, as though the weight of Father’s disapproval were a tangible thing. His ears pop, and he suppresses a wince, and then Father huffs and turns on his heel to leave. “Great to see you as always, Bruce,” Grayson grumbles under his breath. At some point during the conversation his hand had landed on Damian’s shoulder, and Damian had not removed it. He corrects the oversight now.
This was fun but it ended up not fitting where I went with the character.
Finally, Bruce’s motivations! I hit the point in the fic where I had plotted everything out and realized that while Bruce needed to be opaque to Damian he could not be opaque to me. So I wrote out everyone’s motivations, which was enormously helpful for finessing character interactions. I’m including them here because I think I’m very funny.
Damian motivations: wants to be Robin - Talia has held this up as a goal for him, either misdirecting or outright lying to him about what becoming Robin entails. (why? does she think he can break the curse? does she think this will cement Bruce to her? if Damian dies and the house eats him, he’s Robin forever)  Bruce motivations: does not want another Robin. Needs another Robin desperately. Has watched 3-4 kids die on his watch. Alfred motivations: he’s a house :) House motivations: wants another Robin, but only the Right Robin. Happy with the Robin it has (Dick- amalgamation.) Distrusts Damian, who is an outsider and here For The Wrong Reasons.
Bruce’s motivations were also why I included that final scene from his POV, because I think the essential tragedy of his crusade being something he cannot do alone and that devours everyone who comes to help him with it is simply so delicious. (Although she very much didn’t appear in this fic, I did land loosely on Talia thinking that Damian could break the curse and be Robin successfully. He’s her son! She trained him! Of course he can do this.)
Okay I’m cutting myself off here because this is now a solid 1/8th of the length of the actual fic. thank you :)

Fantasy March: Omnibus
Tumblr media
As I prepare for the future of this blog (and there is a future, if anybody's wondering), I find myself looking back at the good times, when I had the time to watch a movie a day and write a blog about it, which...yeah, wasn't even sustainable for me in 2021, so make of that what you will. ANYWAY, I decided that I would bring all of these posts together in an omnibus of sorts, so anybody that wanted to read these posts could find them all easily in one place. This, alongside other archives, are going to be pinned to the top of my page, and will serve as a long index of the films in the appropriate genres. The goal? To extend these archives as I go along, and have this running index for my blog. And again...there will be additions...
SO! With that, feel free to check out these films in the fantasy genre, which is another one of those overlap-prone genres, but with a very distinct vibe to them. The definition of the fantasy genre, for the sake of this blog, is any film where the plot is forwarded or the universe is built upon supernatural phenomena that cannot be explained by scientific means. That includes science fiction means, so no Star Wars, and no superhero films, but possibly some science fantasy. Any films you'd like to see in this list? Comment, reblog, message me, whatever! I'm always open to suggestions to add to my ever-building master list of fantasy films. And check out the other indices to come!

Mississippi River
Sunday, April 7, 2024
Dora and Tim have a great time playing in the wet morning grass outside the Paducah Cracker Barrel. There are smells beneath every shrub. Then we load up and head out toward Missouri.
As we get closer to the Mississippi River we see more levees, including this bridge that looked like the steel overhead could be lowered to protect the town.
Tumblr media
We drove through Cairo (pronounced Karo like the syrup) at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It is the only town protected by levees on all four sides.
It was depressing to see what the change to overland trucking has wrought to what used to be a prosperous river city. The town was full of disintegrating abandoned homes, factories, and businesses.
We cross the Ohio River into Illinois and parallel the Mississippi through very rural roads. Much more interesting than the interstates.
We finally cross the Mississippi River into Missouri at Cape Girardeau ("jir-AR-doh"). Beautiful bridge into a much larger city than Jeanne expected. According to the city website, they had 15,000 visitors for the 2017 eclipse and are expecting 20,000 this year.
Tumblr media
Compared to the two other eclipses we have seen, they don’t seem prepared. There are no signs for places to camp or park.
To our horror, we have no cell service. It must be all the visitors saturating the cell towers. We can’t look up information or addresses with any reliability. Phone calls don’t go through. Text messages are hit or miss.
We stop at the local sports field where there are a number of youth games on the multiple fields. We look for an official to ask where RV parking is. Two friendly Parks & Rec men say they don’t know, we can’t stay here and here’s the name of a good BBQ place.
After they leave, a Black woman named Bertha comes over and tells us that we can camp at a vacant lot near her house, and that we should also try the casino. The casino was on our list of places to try, so we thanked her and went there.
Did I mention that it was raining again? This is so depressing for eclipse watching. It’s less than 24 hours to totality and the weather is miserable.
To our surprise, the casino was not charging for overnight parking. They were very gracious and friendly. We had a Zoom call at 3:30, so we went into the casino to mooch wifi.
The casino had a spot set up to take selfies, so we took advantage. The manager helpfully took it for us. Notice the raincoats.
Tumblr media
The casino had a display of a DeLorean sports car. To our surprise, someone got in and drove it out the revolving door. It barely fit, so they were very careful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We went back to the casino every couple hours to check the weather. Not good. We make plans to leave in the morning, but where?
Tim’s brother Andy arrives and parks next to us in the parking lot. Andy says he has been ODing on cloud coverage sites. Us, too. If you ever want a list, we have a half-dozen bookmarked, and Andy even has more.
We have dinner together on in our RV and make more plans. Bertha stopped by to make sure we were ok. Amazingly considerate.
Tumblr media
The Mississippi is close so we take Dora for a long walk on and around the levees. This is the same bridge from the shore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We watch barges and their tugboats.
Tumblr media
We speculate on the sign on the bridge and then zoom in to see that it marks the clearance under the bridge.
Tumblr media
The sky is stormy-looking, but not actively raining. We decide to check the forecasts in the casino in the morning (still no cell service) and decide then.
