the second screenshot is looking up the same exact thing, but with a (australian) vpn on. canadian vpn didn't fix it fyi.

THIS is exactly the type of censorship to be looking out for on tiktok. this actually is crazy.

To be honest, TikTok as a platform was never dedicated to freedom of speech or freedom of expression: it's a Chinese platform, built in, by and for people who exist in a repressive, totalitarian regime. Bending to the machine, anticipating the machine, is built into its very fabric.

You're just not used to seeing it applied outside of China, in a place where it's visible to you, where it limits your ability to express your opinions.

Ironically, this extreme compliance with state censorship has always been one of the really legitimate points of criticism against TikTok. And I find it morbidly fascinating that Trump inadvertently helps spotlight it.

I think the wildest thing about the TikTok Ban is that TikTok decided to adhere to it beyond the letter of the law.

They bent their knee willingly and gave up space and a platform they did not have to. They consciously decided to fuck over their user base when there was no valid reason for them to do so.

I've seen people talking about how you absolutely do not want to obey ahead of authority, and to see TikTok do it is... weird. It's unsettling. It feels like a dangerous stunt.

Specifically, it feels performative. It's got the marks of a Great Drama™, and given Trump's first 4 years and his absolutely bonkers love for theatrics over anything else, this just feels hollow. Like TikTok is trying to turn it's - generally younger - user base into "fans" of the republicans.

They can't really scoop up youths any other way, honestly. But using a big impactful story and putting Trump as the "hero" who saves their beloved platform.

It's not even the 20th and I just don't like how this new administration is starting. I do not like a private company complying beyond the letter of the law in advance of that law either. Because the only thing the law laid down was that they couldn't update the app on Apple and Google.

There wouldn't have been any fines or legal ramifications.

This means that the tags trump2024 and ihatetrump are flagged differently, and reviews seem to happen differently.

It has been... almost 10 minutes, the top two videos have been approved, but the one with anti trump tags has not.

Pro-Palestinian Censorship

The mass censorship of Palestinian and Pro-Palestinian voices is unacceptable. From Tiktok (who has confirmed it's not their algorithm that makes people support Palestine, tiktokers just DO support Palestine) to Tumblr (who has repeatedly censored tags relating to Palestine) we have seen mass & constant censorship.

It was only until recently (read: when Israel got taken to court for genocide charges) that Palestine-related tags stopped being censored. Why is talk about Palestine's genocide censored, while Ukraine tags get to lounge in the "staff picks" section?

It's performative. Tumblr (the company) does NOT care about Ukraine and would cheer on the bloodshed in Palestine. The people of these platforms, however, have made their stance clear.

i always knew that if an online social space is algorythm-based, this can and eventually will happen. algoryhrms are middleman thats controlled by third party. the more complicated it is, the less users understand how it works, the easier it is to rig it without users knowing. the most effective censorship is the one you dont notice exists. you know because youve seen how it was, you paid attention and noticed the change. i wonder how much censorship like this goes unnoticed.

Came Back Wrong: Tiktok Edition

So that was the stupidest display of political theatre i’ve seen in a while. They shut us down in the US 1.5 hours early and popped back up 14 hours later.

US users are now experiencing a completely overhauled algorithm. I first chalked it up to the mass following trend of the last week messing our fyps up a bit.

Nope. The first alarm rung that i heard was from swifttok, where we found out that when we search for the iconic masterpiece that is The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived the search has been manosphered.

Where did our normal searches go for this? It was in the Eras setlist, the searches should be the name of the song and cities it was performed in, that’s what came up before it went dark at least.

Okay that’s just fandom. Surely important topics haven’t been suppressed?

What the fuck this is not what this search looked like a week ago for US users.

I am PISSED. They used this shitshow as smoke and mirrors for rebooting our servers to work in the governments favor. I have faith in the politically minded members of tiktok to find a way to work the algorithm in our favor still but this is disgusting. Openly playing in our faces suppressing free speech. Now canada is floating a “ban”. Or will it just be another server reboot? 🤔

Idk if yall saw it but at last night’s rally he thanked Elon for being so good with computers, especially voting systems on computers and thanked him for winning Pennsylvania. I’ve seen dozens of videos talking about this on my fyp but as far as the search function knows there’s nothing to pull.

A core function of tiktok is the fyp > search pipeline. Repeated phrases in comments will highlight blue to send you straight to search or you’ll see something in a video you want to check out more about or the creator will mention a users video you should look up for context. All of that relies on a functional INTUITIVE search function.

Yes, Tumblr has a few words it'll flag, but you saying something like homophobes or pedophiles or suicide isn't going to get you flagged like TikTok.

I'm sorry, but typing p3d0ph1l3s or t3rfs is unnecessary. You shouldn't be censoring yourself like that. It makes it very easy for you to forget that censorship, especially centered around language, is bad because you find it so natural to you.

Tiktok is already deleting content against Trump

One hour ago I asked:

The tiktok video was basically this clip (Trump saying that Elon knew the computers counting votes and that is why he won, basically he stole and hacked the election) plus the clip of Elon saying (at Tucker C.) that if they don't win he will go to jail for a very long time (this one).

The tiktok had some comments saying that "my American friend cannot see this", so I posted it here one hour ago....

the video now HAS BEEN DELETED BY TIKTOK.

Not only that, but the way I found the video was searching "trump cheat election" on tiktok browser. At the time there were about 3-4 videos (all at the top of the search) with similar clips, all very recent videos. The comments were all people wondering why they were not viral.

Now, ALL the videos are gone.

The top of the search are all videos from 2024

I checked 30 top videos.

Of these only 4 are from 2025 and only one of these four is against Trump (let's see if the links remain): Report about his case from 6d ago,

The other 3 are: two videos celebrating Trump victory, a video from Germany of a Naz* (an actual Nationalsocialist German naz*).
