One of the more interesting things about reading Straight (not straight, as in books that happen to have straight characters etc etc, but Straight, like the difference between a Nice Guy and a nice guy) is reading sentences from a girl's pov like 'I thought when I found Ren, I'd never have to look at another guy again.'
Now, obviously, the context I have for this book and author means I am aware this is because of heteronormative society and feeling that she must 'belong' to a man, and therefore she thought her quest was done.
Out of context, I'm here like. Oh? Closeted or in denial queer Kelsey vested in staying in said closet????
I'm not totally sure what I'm going for here, but it's something.

I don’t know if the Erin’s are romanticizing abuse, don’t realize they’re writing it, or both because this is genuinely getting concerning
They’ve written how many abusive husbands and then said that those husbands are actually great people who deserve everything?
Well, let's apply Occam's Razor. Which of these makes the most sense;
The writing team has accidentally written at least 3 (more like 5) realistic depictions of domestic abuse, and just happen to be consistently more sympathetic to the men in the relationships, and find that romantic involvement makes a character humanizing in general Or
The writing team has a warped perception of what healthy love is supposed to look like, and think that the behaviors they depict are normal and just part of relationships.
I think the phrase "romanticizing abuse" is kind of unhelpful tbh, because it's not totally accurate. Most people believe they're doing the right thing. It's not likely that they KNOW what they're doing is destructive, and are secretly twirling an evil mustache as they write it into a teenage cat book series in the hopes of making more victims.
It's not entirely romanticism/glorification, it's deeper. It's the idea that these behaviors are normal, understandable, and they as writers either a total disinterest in the internal lives of the victims (Turtle, Bumble) or the desire to "explore" the relationship as if both sides are on equal footing/mutually toxic (Squilf)
And Tom... Tom's redemption ties into the narrative about blood that DOTC tells. It says that having children produces a goodness in men, and biological connection (even to people you don't know) is an intrinsic, sometimes tragic fact of life. The only time Tom ever does something that wasn't actively malicious was saving his daughter, Sparrow Fur.
For that, and that alone, he is redeemed. And thus deserves a cutesy reward in his afterlife.

Glad rags
I was culling misfits from my sock drawer (a task I undertake once every couple of decades, or so) when I came upon these glad rags - remnants of past Tigers' glory days.
They're all from former play-off games - handed out for free to patrons of the game and meant to be fluttered to celebrate big moments in the game (probably, says my cynical self, to impress the TV audience).
Only one of the flags has a date on it: 2014 - the last year, before this one, that the Tigers made the play-offs. It was the year the Tigers finished first in the AL Central, (90-72), but then got swept in the AL Division Series by the Baltimore Orioils. I still feel the sting.
The Tigers will meet the Astros in Houston this afternoon, in the first game of a best-of-three series.
What was that we said in 1984 ...? Bless you, boys.

I hate writing cover letters, it's just one of those tasks that sets off alarm bells of "you're going to fail!" in my brain so loud that it convinces my body that I'm in a fight-or-flight situation. It chooses flight every time.

Like you don't have to have a so-called 'sophisticated palate' or anything obviously, what you like is not a moral judgment, but when your lilywhite supposed savior of India hates everything Indian except the clothes she uses to be cute for her not-like-other-indians-ified boyfriend, ESPECIALLY the food, it just looks an awful lot like you the author are using bits of and pieces of a real life people and culture (that you have smashed into one homogeneous blob, as you have done with all gravies/curries, instead of bothering to learn about the MYRIAD of different cultures - okay) as an exotic set dressing that has no bearing on the actual story, because India and its people(s), to you, is merely a playground and not an actual living place.
Anyway it's racist.
