Review:
A new urban fantasy series featuring a girl who finds herself with magic she never new she had and dealing with working with her ex best friend who might have created something that could destroy the world. Petra Grady is a Sweeper first class, she is tasked with cleaning up mage's spells and dross, the damaging, magical waste made from mage's spells. Sweepers are considered as second-class but Petra is an extremely talented one. When she is forced to work with Benedict Storm, her childhood friend turned nemesis who broke her heart and destroyed their friendship, she is not excited. Benedict is working on research that could render the Mages' dross inactive and make Sweepers obsolete. Petra knows this is an impossible task and that whatever Benedict is doing is going to end up being dangerous and a failure, yet her team wants her on the project to oversee what is happening and give them insight. Benedict doesn't understand dross the way Petra does and strange things are happening around Petra, from her roommate acting weird to her neighbor being around her more... not to mention the fact that Petra might have to finally get out of her own shadow and reveal her talents... which could shatter the world. This book is the first book in a series and unfortunately I don't think I will be continuing on with this series. The book had an interesting world at first but then I found myself disliking the characters and not at all caring about what happened to them or the world. The magic system was unique and I liked the urban fantasy setting. I however, did not like Petra at all. Petra made terrible decisions that had me frustrated and honestly I couldn't care less about the other characters and what they were doing. It felt like a drag trying to get to the end of the book and I so badly wanted to DNF it many times but kept pushing myself to finish in hopes that maybe it would get better (spoiler: it did not). I feel that if you like slow moving urban fantasy novels with a pretty naive and young protagonist and no romance, give this one a go, maybe you'll have a better time with it than I did.

Three Kinds of Lucky by Kim Harrison
New world from the author of the long running Hollows series! I loved the world building here, just the mechanics of magic and how you get an advanced degree in magic when the general public doesn't know magic exists. Really fun!
The Meister of Decimen City by Brenna Raney
Y'all, this was FUN. This book is bonkers, but in a very, sure, of course that's the next logical step once you've introduced superheros and cloned dinosaurs. I rooted for Rex so hard and I love the way her city and friends love her.
What I'm Reading Now
I started Babel and I'm going to try to finish that in the next few days before it goes back to the library. I can tell this book is going to get difficult and I've been procrastinating it a bit because of that, but I don't want to wait several weeks to get it back from the library if it goes back. I'm also almost done with a re-read of the manga Dengeki Daisy. I love how much it shows when it was written, it's all about hacking and so clearly right at the early internet. Otherwise, I'm in the middle of a couple of series, an academic book about Medieval spices, and still going through the webcomic Digger.
What I'm Looking Forward to in April
I've got the last volume of Kaguya-sama: Love is War sitting on my shelf. My husband and I have watched the anime and been reading through all the manga together, so it's a little bittersweet to see it end. I just finished Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries and really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to the sequel. I've also got the new T. Kingfisher What Feasts at Night on hold at the library, so that will be fun!
Reading Challenges
I'm a little ahead on my Book Riot Read Harder challenge, so being a little picky about what to read next. I'm trying to decide if Babel counts as a book about books, or if it's really a book about words. We'll see as I get through it and I might pick something else for that prompt. For my Reading Around the World challenge, I've got The Tower of the Antilles by Achy Obejas on hold for Cuba.

I didn’t dislike this book, I was frustrated by it quite a bit, but I didn’t dislike it and I still feel a little like the review feels more negative than I intended it to be. It’s one that felt like it could be more than it was, and I think that was my big issue with it. I want to see Kim Harrison write outside of urban fantasy at some point, I think, it feels like she could do solid horror.…

Whether that’s sorrow at your new problems or rage at society for failing you, you are valid, and it is truly messed up that society is continuing to fail you.
#disability#trauma#chronic illness#long COVID#COVID#Tbh I’m not sure if I have long covid or not but I keep swinging between despair and fury#The brain fog SUCKS#I might have always had it but it feels especially bad now?#And I have all kinds of respiratory problems that got exacerbated#And possibly chronic fatigue but it’s unclear#And I’m one of the lucky ones!!!#I can still exercise without needing three days of bed rest after!#I was so RELIEVED when it turned out I could do that#I did like. Three weeks of breathing rehab to make sure#Not sure if it helped but now I’m not getting post-exertional backlash nearly as much anymore#And I didn’t lose my sense of smell or get my taste messed up#And I don’t need a respirator just an inhaler and some allergy meds and to take frequent breaks#And like. I know so many people have it worse#And that suuuuucks#But EVEN THIS makes me want to scream and rail half the time

I've been thinking about how the Amell Warden and Hawke are related, and that house Trevelyan is technically distantly related to house Pavus, with a number of distant relations spread all across Thedas (Phillam, Lord Albrecht, Lady Osher...), and now I can't shake this feeling that I really, really want house Trevelyan to also be related to whatever the human Rook's last name is going to wind up being.
It just really tickles me to imagine my Inquisitor shrugging, like "Yeah, their family and us Trevelyans have about as much to do with one another as the Pavus and the Trevelyans. Or the Couslands and the Trevelyans. Or the Bayarts and the Trevelyans. The De Ghislain and the Trevelyans. Us Trevelyans have had fingers in a lot of metaphorical pies, so to speak."
(and then Dorian can have a cute moment, and say a little quip about how he's not surprised that his amatus comes from a long and prestigious line of heartbreakers, heyoooo)

Recent game related things .. hrmm...
#I do like the inconsistency of the first map. that is actually something older but that I re-found and added to my Game Reference stuff#so that when characters reference where they're from I can be accurate. I like that the whole map is kind of shifted up that way. Where the#actual south part doesnt even count as the south since its Too Far and Scary lol. and if you say you're from 'the north' thats basically#like.. one single continent. Though some people do make distinctions like 'north midlands' or etc. still. I like the ways that common#language isn't always precisely accurate like that. and thinking about why a culture would classify things a certain way or etc. etc.#The inventory page is so funny to me because it's literally just the BASe like.. sample layout just to make sure it works properly with 0#actual design into it. just colored rectangles thrown together in MS paint. but what if I like... left it like that.. what if all the other#art in the game and UI is like stylized and fully matching BUT the inventory/journal/etc. screens I just left as plain colored blocks#with random misalignments and black spots and etc gjhbhjj... It looks unfinished in a Funny Contrast way to me.#the wordcounts are just like... my past few days of writing.. I am still not getting 2200 words a day done or whatever I needed. I'm lucky#if it's even half of that .... tee hee.. :3c I do also keep having appointments and other things going on but..grrr...#The full map of the area is probably not necessary but I thought it would be more realisitc if people were able to reference things. Like i#you have people all living in a city area probably at some point someone might mention a neighboring city or some landmark nearby#or etc. so I thought having at least the basic names of what's around for reference would be sensible. A side character mentioning#'oh yeah I don't live here full time I just travel from Marisene sometimes' or whatever makes it seem more like a Real#Fleshed Out Place than people just making vague references like 'the river' or 'i come from a city nearby' or 'i went to a place somewhere#around here' or 'the other city' or etc. lol.. Especially since global cities/global areas are weird as they operate almost like an#independent country within their walls. so it's like a micro country inside of another country usually. just plopped down in some agreed#upon plot of land that won't be too disruptive to the main country around it. That could get very complex depending on the cultural and#political backdrop of where they're placed (though obviously they try to choose the 'easiest' areas possible for it). Asen is a very mild#country without much history of conflict or anything so it's fine. But still interesting that Sifeh and the entire branched out global area#border three other districts of Asen. Which means like 3 times the local representitives you'l have to negotiate with for some major change#or anything. I think one of the 'random characters you can find around the world and have short discussions with just to make the area#feel more populated and real even though theyre not actual important npcs' is going to be a guy who actually serves on the council that#handles running the global areas and he's like.. some perpetually exhausted middle aged elf running around with a clipboard or whatever#ANYWAY...... hrgh... still trying to write when I can....#I WISH so badly that I had the scope for a simple character creation menu and all character interactions would allot for the background#of your player character. And also to have a simple day night cycle where places in the world you explore/people you talk to during the day#have new options or dialogue at night.. BUT alas... I already am so behind on everything as is lol.. aughhh... T o T#As the worlds number one Needless Detail And Complexity Enjoyer i must dilligently prevent myself from adding additional complexity

#so basically#at summer camp whilst i was counseling i saw two things#there was one counselor who we'll call “sarah” and she had only one camper bc reasons well call her camper “suzie”#now suzie is an INCREDIBLY good kid. shes super smart and kind and shes sincerely smiling almost all the time#shes super well-behaved and polite and does everything shes asked and THEN some#and sarah LOVES her. she is CONSTANTLY (understandably) bragging about how cool her camper is and how happy she is to have her as a camper#on the other side of that weve got “terry” and his camper “johnny”#now johnny is ALSO a really smart and nice and polite and cool kid#and terry is ALSO super proud of his camper and brags about him loads and is so happy to have him as a camper#there is one key difference though#sarah always bragged to suzie's face. she told suzie how cool she was how smart she was and how nice she was#sarah would be standing right next to suzie and loudly telling her friends how lucky she was to have suzie as a camper#terry on the other hand bragged behind johnny's back#johnny had NO WAY of knowing how happy terry was to have him as a camper or how smart he was or how cool he was#one time i watched terry talk to johnny and then while johnny was still there whisper to another counselor about how smart he was#so yeah#idk why that is#stick stories#three pigeons in a trench coat

the worst part about being a pianist is that you can't just...simply take your instrument with you
#friends I am BEREFT#I was incredibly lucky to have my own piano for the last three years of college#and I mean like. someone gave it to me for free#and I also had access to a social network in the area + a pickup truck + my father who is an experienced piano mover and problem solver™#but anyway I could not bring it with me when I left#and even if I could just manifest it here there is nowhere to put it in this house#that's the thing like. you can find pianos pretty cheap on facebook marketplace these days#but moving one is a whole ordeal#and then you have to have somewhere to put a whole piece of furniture#our living room is tiny :(#thinking I could maybe fit a keyboard in my bedroom if I could find one#but it's not the same...#anyway my best hope atm is getting door access to the church I attend#but I have yet to converse with anyone in a position to help me with that#and it's only a short walk which is nice#but still not the same as home piano#ik ik this is a very ''first world problem''#but for most of my life I have been in the habit of playing almost every day#it's stress relieving! it's creative! it was...kind of loadbearing in some ways...#it's a very Jane Austen predicament. where's a secret fiancee to buy and deliver a surprise piano when you need one
