probably time for this story i guess but when i was a kid there was a summer that my brother was really into making smoothies and milkshakes. part of this was that we didn't have AC and couldn't afford to run fans all day so it was kind of important to get good at making Cool Down Concoctions.
we also had a patch of mint, and he had two impressionable little sisters who had the attitude of "fuck it, might as well."
at one point, for fun, this 16 year old boy with a dream in his eye and scientific fervor in heart just wanted to see how far one could push the idea of "vanilla mint smoothie". how much vanilla extract and how much mint can go into a blender before it truly is inedible.
the answer is 3 cups of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup milk alternative, and about 50 sprigs (not leaves, whole spring) of mint. add ice and the courage of a child. idk, it was summer and we were bored.
the word i would use to describe the feeling of drinking it would maybe be "violent" or perhaps, like. "triangular." my nose felt pristine. inhaling following the first sip was like trying to sculpt a new face. i was ensconced in a mesh of horror. it was something beyond taste. for years after, i assumed those commercials that said "this is how it feels to chew five gum" were referencing the exact experience of this singular viscous smoothie.
what's worse is that we knew our mother would hate that we wasted so much vanilla extract. so we had to make it worth it. we had to actually finish the drink. it wasn't "wasting" it if we actually drank it, right? we huddled around outside in the blistering sun, gagging and passing around a single green potion, shivering with disgust. each sip was transcendent, but in a sort of non-euclidean way. i think this is where i lost my binary gender. it eroded certain parts of me in an acidic gut ecology collapse.
here's the thing about love and trust: the next day my brother made a different shake, and i drank it without complaint. it's been like 15 years. he's now a genuinely skilled cook. sometimes one of the three of us will fuck up in the kitchen or find something horrible or make a terrible smoothie mistake and then we pass it to each other, single potion bottle, and we say try it it's delicious. it always smells disgusting. and then, cerimonious, we drink it together. because that's what family does.
#this is true#writeblr#warm up#relatedly for some reason one of our Favorite Jokes#amongst the Siblings#is like - ''this is so good u will love it''#while we are reacting to something we OBVIOUSLY find viscerally disgusting#like we will be actively retching and be like ''nooooo it's so good''#to the point that i sometimes get nervous if someone outside my family is like oh u should try it its good#(obvi we never force each other to eat anything. we are all just curious birds and#like. we're GONNA try the new thing.)#edit to answer why we had so much vanilla:#my mom is a very good cook and we LOVE to bake. so she just had a lot of staples in the house.#it's one of those things that's like. have u ever continuously thought ''ah i should get butter im probably out''#even tho u are not out of butter. so u end up with like 5 years of butter.#my mom would do that in a costco but like with vanilla extract#to be fair we WERE always using WAY TOO MUCH bc we were kids#so like she was right to stock up#ps. yes we were VERY sick after this lol i just didn't want to include it in the post in case ppl had an ick about that#u can tell it's real bc we knew "oh no we fucked up that's too much vanilla to waste'' but our reaction was to just. keep drinking it#> sibling understanding that vanilla extract isn't free > knowledge mother doesnt mind if we use it for milkshakes#> sibling choice to maybe get in a loophole of ''not wasting it'' if we drink it bc that's the same as using it (not throwing it out)#listen bud i was like 13 and my sister was like 9#when my mom discovered this we. got in. A LOT. of trouble. a lot of it. a LOT of it.#3rd edit bc i guess it isn't clear - i am 1 of my brother's 2 little sisters#i am the middle child#out of all the ways i have had to explain a post before being like ''did u forget a middle child can happen'' is my favorite

According to 4koma #232, Kohane has the ability to purr.
#project sekai#4koma#kohane azusawa#potentially interesting TL notes:#first for context in the panels before this An was thinking about how great kohane's singing/smile is. hence the throat thing.#anyway An uses says いけない when talking to kohane which can mean various things like “should not” “unable to” or “naughty”#she's treating kohane kinda like a cat here so i localised her part with the “how naughty~” like she's talking to one#also akito just says “it's complicated” in response to kohane which doesn't really work in english so i just changed it to another statemen#that conveys a similar meaning (he's pointing out that kohane is purring like a cat despite her saying she isn't one lol)#you probably could've done an's part as “it's all your throat's fault” but i thought “how naughty” was more in spirit of the cat motif#this is not interesting at all

working in a factory has you thinking so much about the insane chain of labor & transport that goes into making literally anything
#like first you realize that You are making & doing things that you previously had thought - if you'd thought abt it at all - were automated#& you become incredibly aware of how all the materials you're working with came from somewhere - these plastic clips are from france; this#fabric is from india etc. and that there are people in factories there making those things and that they are also probably getting their#materials from somewhere#one of the little things that makes me think about this the most is we have these 50m rolls of cotton banding we see onto canvas & nets#and in theory it should be all one piece but sometimes it's actually two pieces which you discover when you get far enough in the roll and#find that there's a join where it's been stitched together by hand (!). which is a little annoying bc we can't use that bit so you have#to cut that but out & stitch it together again on the machine which interrupts what you were sewing before & slows you down But it's so#striking to me bc like it's really easy to look at this banding & it's so exactly the same & obviously machine made it's Really easy to#forget that there are people there running these machines. who notice there's a break & have to stop what they're doing & get a needle &#thread and stitch it together. by hand! like someone somewhere has handled exactly where I'm touching it & i don't even know where in the#world they are!#the other place this happens is often on the selvedge edge of the fabric there's writing in pencil i don't know ye meaning of but evidently#was important to the process somewhere & someone wrote that out#idk like it's really easy to watch those videos of really specific machines in factories & convince yourself that everything is automated#but the truth is the vast majority of stuff is not & is made by people doing that. & even when it is there are people running those machine#<- and i'm not saying this in a soppy way tbc. this whole system is a nightmare of exploitation & to some degree I'm just continually amaze#by how insane this whole process is & also how completely un-transparent it is unless you are made to think abt it#another thing is noticeable when you look at our orders that most of what we sell isn't to customers it's to shops who then sell to custome#which then makes you think like. those plastic clips from france are they actually made in france or are we just buying them from france?#are they actually made by underpaid people in a country the name of which is completely lost to the chain of production at this point#anyways none of this is new it's just when you are working in a factory using this stuff you start wondering like.#what's the factory like that the person who stitched this banding together like. what's their day like there#wish we could talk abt how fucked up this all is - for them especially probably - together#thoughts

I’d like to think Jay and Nya are very funny because they are both mechanics, but in entirely opposite ways:
Nya has all her tools in proper order. In her workshop, there is never any scrap part going unused. Any notes and blueprints since the ripe age of 12 have been carefully stored and saved, no matter how much she cringes when looking back on them. The Samurai X designs and revisions have their own file cabinet as well as digital backups. Her measurements are double and triple checked, even though she probably had it right the first time. Every choice she makes is calculated and buffed out, from the interlocking gears to the paint job. She prides on her work on being practical and aesthetic, thank you very much.
Jay, meanwhile, is the definition of fuck around and find out. Blueprints? Who needs em, anyways? The only thing vaguely resembling “notes” in his work area are scrap pieces of paper with the most round-about mathematics ever (complete with indecipherable short-hand and a stick figure drawing of Jay holding a blowtorch, naturally.) He will change up plans on the fly and casually stick his hands in very sharp moving parts like there is no tomorrow. Safety equipment? He grew up in a junkyard. He had a wrench in his hand before he could walk. Yeah, no, he’s pretty sure he’s fine, thanks.
#what i’m getting at is jay and nya are both Very Smart and help balance each other out#nya is a perfectionist to the point of frustration and jay tends to be lax on things he should probably handle with more caution#the blueprints thing is just funny to me#because it leads nicely into my hc for dragons rising for when jay and sora meet and she eventually asks him to explain a past device#the next morning jay comes out with pretty clean sparkling blueprints with step by step notes explaining his thoughts#and nya just wrings him by the neck when she sees it#she’s like I HAVE BEEN ASKING YOU FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS—#jay walker#jay ninjago#nya jiang#nya ninjago#ninjago#jaya#ninjago jaya#golden writings

HE FELL IN LOVE WITH HER AFTER LEARNING SHE WAS JUST A BIRD
The whole show. The whole show. We have this long running character beat of Duck beloved she, as she truly is, is unloveable and once people see her to her very core they will abandon her. But simultaneously!!!!! We have this subtle plot building of fakir, fully aware the girl has feathers, falling in love with her! And it’s so slow it doesn’t come to the forefront until the very end and AAAAAAAAA the amount of times Duck laments how no one would care about her as a bird meanwhile fakir looks at her with the most adoring eyes shut up!! Shut up literally shut up!!!! People will love you for the things you hate about yourself and you’ll have no goddamn idea because you’re so wrapped up in how YOU see yourself!!!!! HE LOVED THAT LITTLE BIRD MORE THAN SHE HATED HERSELF
#going insane I need to go to sleep#not a coherent meta post sorrt#I needed to scream#as I do#constantly#wait I have a smarter post to make in the morning#i have thoughts about needing other people to boost your low self esteem vs genuinely growing to like yourself more because of others#positive impact on you#if that makes sense#idk I’m sleepy#I may have made up a straw man#but I feel like there are people out there who are like well why should she need some guy to feel better about herself#which! yeah she should be able to feel confident with or without him#but she was at such a low point she needed a friend to pull her out#we don’t see her given time to heal#lea talks#princess tutu

still thinking about those promo pics where they locked the tops and bottoms in separate rooms
#tops: at the club (in the backroom making shady deals)#bottoms: having snacks in the bright marble atrium#'the vibes were toxic at the club' you said.#'aster sold me to tidal wave of summer (-1)' you said.#that room of tops is seriously terrifying i can't imagine them all stuck together in a tiny space GETTING ALONG#let them mingle with the others!! *opens the hatch on the cage of tops so they can roam free*#honestly wouldn't they all be happier in the free range airy enclosure??#more space means fewer territorial disputes :} dante and kuya might not overlap and thus they may fight less :}}}#because of course my first thought was YAKUMO HOW ARE YOU ALIVE AND SMILING IN THIS ROOM? BLINK TWICE IF YOU NEED HELP#all your friends/emotional support entities are in the other room#you should be serving garu another platter of sandwiches. what are you doing in the backroom with mafia boss dante#then i pointed at blade saying YOU SHOULDN'T BE HERE EITHER. well. i mean. u kinda .can if you want. u can adapt pretty easily#well ok maybe i shouldn't be typecasting any of you. you can hang out in whichever room you want#but... are you only hanging out in the club because you're dressed in black?#and wearing black in that glass (i assume) room with the bottoms will be too warm?#that's ok!! you can take off your jackets? or change? or run around shirtless! who's gonna care!! eiden's certainly not gonna care#wait. where's eiden#is he somewhere else ? all alone? wearing a half black half white suit split down the middle? like a confused penguin?#LET! In Emma, the incident that sparks the story isn't a death or a loss of fortune or even someone new coming to town. It's a wedding. A happy event, usually the end of a story. But I like how this acknowledges that even a happy event like a wedding can bring its own kind of sorrow. Emma's happy for Miss Taylor, but she still mourns the way that her life has to change. Marriage can massively alter social circles, especially for women, taking them away from the home sphere and into a new life, and forcing the people they leave behind to deal with the loss. Here, it's a good change, but it's still a change.
Emma's in a unique position among Austen heroines. She's got money, a comfortable home, a loving father who would prefer she stay in his household for the rest of her life. She doesn't have to consider matrimony as a business arrangement the way some heroines have to. If she marries, it's going to be almost solely for companionship.
Because that's the one thing Emma lacks. She's lonely. She loves her father, but he's not someone she can engage with socially or intellectually. She ranks above everyone in town, so there's no one who can be on an equal level with her. Her father won't travel, so she can't get involved in social events with people who are of her rank and happen to live a little further out. Her attachment to Harriet is a desperate attempt to create a companion of her own social rank, and then marry her to Elton so she can remain in Emma's social circle. Mrs. Martin would be just another farmer's wife who sits below Emma's level; Mrs. Elton can be her equal.
But we can't overlook the fact that Emma makes the situation worse through snobbery. She's not only of a higher social rank than the people around her--she feels herself superior to them. Her father has plenty of friends, but to her, Mrs. Goddard and Miss Bates are just "prosy old ladies". Which is fine--they're more of her father's age, not hers. But it does indicate a wider personality problem. There's more than a hint of Mr. Darcy about the way she goes about detaching Harriet from Mr. Martin because he's so "coarse and vulgar", and trying to raise her up to Emma's standards of what's acceptable.
So, anyway, Emma's uniquely positioned in a story where friends-to-lovers has to be the character arc. And in the process, she's got to overcome her sense of superiority that makes it so difficult for her to classify people as friends.
#the great emma reread begins!#emma#jane austen#i feel like this should have been a bullet-point list#because written out in essay form i'm just restating what everyone's said a jillion times#but i gotta get my thoughts straight to have a lens on this reread

Round and round, In circles we go.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wei wuxian#lan wangji#I re-worked this one so many times and it honestly could have had a few more re-dos#Desperately reminding myself that the point of all this is to create and move on and not obsess over little things#As I also have to recon the fact wwx's hands are untied for one panel as ...uh...its a mental projection. An abstraction of despair#Or that I really should have written 'get caught idiot' for a funnier text line.#Anyways! Don't think about that and instead think about how cute lwj is as he gets his zoomies out around the room.#Even the oldest dog will bounce and wag when playing with their favourite person....#More thoughts on wwx's crisis in tomorrow's upload for I am too sleepy to think right now

you'd think a timeloop of mouthwashing would go so hard but unfortunately i think to remain true to the source material. the crew member stuck in the time loop WOULD have to be jimmy
#opposite of a 'fix it' fic#'i didn't think it was possible for things to get worse but you keep proving me wrong' fic#mouthwashing#sorry i have a lot of thoughts about this#i think so much of curly's character is tied up in like. you knew something was wrong and you didn't act and now you can't.#like it's not a coincidence to me when the printout for the asteroid warning comes out. you had a heads up about the asteroid#you had a heads up about this man. and you didn't act and now you can't.#so I don't think a timeloop would work for him. it WOULD fix him but it would not fix his character. iykwim#anya and swansea would get too much done. all you need is one time where you have access to the scanner to get the gun#and you can just start killing jimmy. and they would. good for them#i would feel too bad to do that to daisuke. im not sure what he would learn other than exactly what swansea points out#abt learning and coming out worse#unfortunately mr bob the builder wannabe WOULD think he should be in a timeloop and it would match his character /neg

Historians having takes on frev women that make me go 😐 compilation
Sexually frustrated in her marriage to a pompous civil servant much older than herself, [Madame Roland] may have found Danton’s celebrated masculinity rather uncomfortable. Danton (1978) by Norman Hampson, page 77.
The Robespierres sent their sister to Arras because that was their hometown, the family home, where they had relatives, uncles, aunts and friends, like Buissart who they didn’t cease to remain in correspondence with, even in the middle of the Terror. There, among them, Charlotte would not be alone; she would find advice, rest, the peace necessary to heal her nervousness and animosity. Away from Mme Ricard, who she hated, away from Mme Duplay, who she detested, she would enjoy auspicious calmness. It is Le Bon that the Robespierres will charge with escorting their sister to this neccessary and soothing exile. […] If there is a damning piece in Charlotte Robespierre's case, it is this one (her interrogation, held July 31 1794). She seems to be caught in the act of accusing this Maximilien whom she rehabilitates in her Memoirs. She is therefore indeed a hypocrite, unworthy of the great name she bears, and which she dishonors the very day after the holocaust of 10 Thermidor. Charlotte Robespierre et Guffroy (1910) in Annales Révolutionnaires, volume 3 (1910) page 322, and Charlotte Robespierre et ses mémoires (1909) page 93-94, both by Hector Fleishmann.
Elisabeth, as she was popularly called, was barely past her twelfth birthday, younger even by three years than Barere’s own mother when she was given in marriage. On the following day the guests assembled again in the little church of Saint-Martin at midnight to attend the wedding ceremony of the handsome charmer and the bewildered child. Dressed in white, clasping in her arms a yellow, satin-clad doll that Bertrand had given her — so runs the tradition — she marched timidly to the altar, looking more like a maiden making her first communion than a woman celebrating a binding sacrament. Perhaps the doll, if doll there was, filled her eye, but certainly she could not fail to note how handsome her husband was. Bertrand Barere; a reluctant terrorist (1962) by Leo Gershoy, page 32.
The young nun who bore the name of Hébert did not hide her fate. She did not wish to prolong a life stifled from her childhood in the cloister, branded in the world by the name she bore, fighting between horror and love for the memory of her husband, unhappy everywhere. Histoire des Girondins (1848) by Alphonse de Lamartine, volume 8, page 60.
Lucile in prison showed more calmness than Camille. Before the tribunal, she seemed to possess neither fear nor hope, she denied having taken an active role in the prison conspiracy. What did it matter to her the answer they were trying to extract from her? They said they wanted her guilty? Very well! She would be condemned and join Camille. This was what she said again when she was told that she would suffer the same fate as her husband: ”Oh, what joy, in a few hours I’m going to see Camille again!” Camille et Lucile Desmoulins: un couple dans la tourmente (1986) by Jean Paul Bertaud, page 293.
What did it matter to Lucile whether she was accused or defended? She had no longer any pretext for living in this world. She was one of those heroines of conjugal love who are more wife than mother. Besides, Horace lived, and Camille was dead. It was of the absent only that she thought. As for the child, would not Madame Duplessis act a mother's part to him? The grandmother would watch over the orphan. If Lucile had lived, she could have done nothing but weep over the cradle, thinking of Camille. Camille Desmoulins and his wife; passages from the history of the Dantonists founded upon new and hitherto unpublished documents (1876) by Jules Claretie.
Having been widowed at the age of 23 [sic] years, Élisabeth Duplay remarried a few years later to the adjutant general Le Bas, brother of her first husband, and kept the name which was her glory. She lived with dignity, and all those who have known her, still beautiful under her crown of white hair, have testified to the greatness of her sentiments and austerity of her character. She died at an old age, always loyal to the memory of the great dead she had loved and whose memory she, all the way to her final day, didn’t cease to honor and cherish. As for the lady of Thermidor, Thérézia Cabarrus, ex-marquise of Fontenay, citoyenne Tallien, then princess of Chimay, one knows the story of her three marriages, without counting the interludes. She had, as one knows, three husbands living at the same time. Now compare these two existances, these two women, and tell me which one merits more the respect and the sympathy of good men. Histoire de Robespierre et du coup d’état du 9 thermidor (1865) by Louis Ernest Hamel, volume 3, page 402.
Fel free to comment which one was your favorite! 😀
#frev#french revolution#frev compilation#hampson: if women were uncomfortable around danton it’s because they were sexually frustrated!#fleishmann: two men in their 30s can ultimately decide what’s best for their sister who’s also in her 30s#also it’s totally unreasonable for charlotte to disown her brothers after their death when her life was possibly in danger#(and even though they pretty much disowned her while they were still alive)#lamartine claretie bertaud: françoise and lucile wanted to die since there was no longer any point to their lives after the husbands died#hamel: a good way of finding out which side was bad and which side was good is to look over how slutty the women on each side were#wow are you seriously surprised the view of women held by 19th century authors isn’t exactly top modern?#…no comment#claretie should technically get a pass since he thought the journal of sanson was an authentic source#But it was so spectacular i couldn’t contain myself#also a shame i couldn’t remember where i read the interpretation that the reason simond évrard was wary of charlotte corday#was bc she might seduce marat when alone with him

anyway i think the overcomplication of queer labels has really done a disservice to younger (or newly discovered) queer folks trying to figure themselves out. you dont need to know every aspect and detail or your sexuality, gender, preference, etc. sometimes you just gotta let things happen and you’ll figure it out as you go. you may never have a word for it and that’s okay.
#radio rambles#world is your oyster n all that#to clarify when i say overcomplication i dont mean the fact that there are. so so many labels to pick from#i mean moreso that ppl are insistent on the rules and limits of those labels that you dont leave any wiggle room for experimentation#but there SHOULD be wiggle room. people are complicated#and i think the insistence ive seen so often on the ‘meaning’ of a label intimidates people out of trying#and. and. its okay to decide you dont want something#and dont like something#thats the point of trying it out#or even considering it#anyways. im keepinng it vague because i am talking about so many different aspects at once but#i hope this makes sense#ty pepper u are my buddy to ramble at#queer thoughts#<- talk tag ig. in case i wish to return
