Who would have imagined that one of the most intriguing and suspenseful films of this year would be about a bunch of cardinals sequestered in the Vatican to vote on a new Pope? In fact, intriguing and suspenseful is not giving Conclave its full due. This is simply one of the best films of the year. Don’t be surprised to see it on a bunch of best films of the year lists and also for it to get a whole bunch of award nominations.
It's that good. Who would have guessed?
Again, it was about a bunch of cardinals in the Vatican. Blessed are the believers, indeed.
Conclave is based on the novel by Robert Harris and shows us – very forcefully and at the same time very subtly – that some very devout and proper people can still have some skeletons in their closets. In fact, pretty much everyone here, and they are mostly good and spiritual followers of Christ, has some serious secrets which they are not willing to allow to see the light of day.
Many of the deadly sins – lust, greed, pride, envy and wrath – all show up at different points in the story. (Gluttony and sloth don’t seem to be on the menu but give it time.) The final twist – which I will certainly not spoil – is not even on that deadly sins scale and may even go too far afield dramatically for a chunk of the film’s potential audience. Yet somehow it does make a certain strange sense for the story.
Even arguably the most devout person of all – Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) – the man in charge of making sure the conclave runs smoothly and essentially the moral center of the story (assuming you don’t count the dead Pope) makes some dubious moves and forms some sketchy alliances. And yet you can tell he is doing these things for the right reasons.
Or is he?
The choosing of the Pope itself turns out to be oddly like an extremely solemn reality show. Cardinals take the lead in the votes, make alliances with (and against) each other, sabotage each other’s campaigns and as their secrets meet the light of day, they are basically voted off the island.
There is much more subterfuge and backstabbing than you would expect from such a serious pursuit, but that just points out the humanity of the process.
The acting here is unfailingly spectacular, particularly Fiennes, Stanley Tucci as a moderate cardinal and particularly Isabella Rossellini as a quiet but steely head nun, who is mostly ignored by the men, until she finally has to take some moral stands to keep the process going fairly. Seriously, Rossellini should definitely be in line for a Best Supporting Actress nominee.
Like I said earlier, don’t be surprised if that is only one of many Oscar nominations.

Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek in Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade, 2016) Cast: Sandra Hüller, Peter Simonischek, Michael Wittenborn, Thomas Loibl, Trystan Pütter, Ingrid Bisu, Lucy Russell, Hadewych Minis, Vlad Ivanov, Victoria Cocias. Screenplay: Maren Ade. Cinematography: Patrick Orth. The nearly three hours -- well, two hours, 42 minutes -- of Toni Erdmann don't exactly fly by. It's more that they sometimes pause while we accustom ourselves to the eccentricity of the characters and begin to absorb some of the satire, build up another head of steam, and speed into another head-spinning but frequently funny episode. There's a feeling of improv about the film, and with improv there are often dead spots between outbursts of brilliance. The film is about a father and daughter, Winfried (Peter Simonischek) and Ines Conradi (Sandra Hüller). He's a shaggy old prankster who teaches music in a school; she's an intensely driven corporate consultant now working to land a contract in Romania that would help companies streamline -- mostly by jettisoning their unionized work force. The film is thus a satire on global corporate capitalism, with side glances at the pervasive sexism in that world. But writer-director Maren Ade has chosen not to weight the film in the direction of either character study or satire, and I think the film suffers from tone problems occasionally. Granted, it would be easy to slip into formula with such mismatched characters, a father who delights in comic disguises like fright wigs and false teeth to shake up his uptight daughter's aggressively workaholic ways. It's to the credit of the film that there are enough unexpected moments -- such as Ines's singing "The Greatest Love of All" at a Romanian family's Easter celebration that Winfried has crashed -- that it never sinks to the routine and conventional. Finally, the film does, I think, go too far, when Ines suddenly decides to host a corporate party in the nude, insisting that all the guests strip too, and claims that it's a "team-building" exercise. Winfried, of course, crashes this party as well, wearing a Bulgarian kukeri costume -- it almost literally turns the film into a shaggy-dog story. Toni Erdmann was a big critical hit, and was a major contender for the foreign film Oscar that went, I think correctly, to Asghar Farhadi's The Salesman.

Toni Erdmann
(Germany/Austria 2016)
Toni Erdmann is not a real person; he’s the alterego of retired divorced schoolteacher Winfried Conradi (Peter Simonischek). When Winfried, a weird old hippy jokester, appears onscreen in a shaggy wig and bad fake teeth, he certainly gives the impression that those around him have had to excuse his relatively harmless but tiresome—and often annoying—penchant for silliness.…

(more…)

Toni Erdmann    [trailer]
I knew that despite being often described as a comedy that was only partially true. So despite being very curious because of the enormous praise the movie had gotten I was also a bit reluctant to watch it, not at least because of its almost three hours running time. But I finally did. It is a highly interesting film, unique in tone, with often long, almost documentary-like takes, about a father visiting his estranged daughter. He's maybe sometimes a little silly, but down-to-earth, living in the real world. And she's a business woman living in the artificial bubble of corporate consulting, where each business conversation can be used to play a round of bullshit bingo.
Ade does a great job describing the often awkward tension between father and daughter. I also liked the contrast between the round-the-clock business life, and life of regular people in Romania.
The near-final scene at the brunch is for the ages. While there are cracks towards the end that indicate that Ines is indeed Winfried's daughter, sharing some of his characteristics, the film denies the "easy" ending of Ines shedding her armour.
Simonischek's dead-pan delivery of his made-up stories is wonderful, and not for the first time, Hüller knows no fear when portraying her characters. They will make you laugh, and, most likely, will also make you cry.
I'm highly pleased that the movie has become such a big success. I hope it will win an Oscar. While I have to admit that I don't have the intention to watch it again immediately, everyone should watch it once.
Side note, it was just announced that Hollywood is planning a remake starring Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig. While I suspect it will be a much different film when it comes to pacing, I can support the casting.
