The ambassador had gotten busy talking with Perceptor, they honestly didn't spend a lot of time in the Labs with him and Brainstorm only having occasional passing chats with each other but after everything with Traxies they had found a slight comfort talking with them about it.
"Has Traxies been alright when he's been working with you too?" They ask the two mechs. Perceptor's optic gleamed with contemplative concern as he regarded the ambassador, weighty silence hanging thick between them for several moments. When at last he spoke, his voice was measured, tinged with a rare uncertainty.
"I confess, we have not observed any...overt signs of distress from Traxies during his time in the laboratory. He has remained focused and professional in his duties." The scientist paused, fielding flickering with faint unease. "However, since his accident he hasn't been very forthcoming with details, he is still very dedicated to his work"
Brainstorm, ever the more animated of the two, leaned in conspiratorially, field pulsing with curiosity. "Yeah, the little mech's been keeping his cards pretty close to the chassis, y'know? Doesn't really open up about what's going on in that big processor of his. Starting to worry me and i'm sure Ratchet isn't taking it well"
The engineer's optics dimmed as he regarded the ambassador shrewdly. "Though if I had to guess...I'd say he's probably got a lot on his mind. Things like that don't just roll off a mech's back struts"
Perceptor nodded in agreement. "Indeed. I can only imagine the turmoil he must be processing." The scientist's gaze grew distant, as if contemplating the weight of such revelations.
"You guys didn't happen to see much after the accident with the cyber flower?" The ambassador asked, Before sighing. "He's... he's been locking himself away since he came back with the large shuttle Mech. It got to the point Ratchet had Megatron to step in" they explain.
Preceptor's optic widened slightly at the ambassador's words, and he exchanged a concerned glance with his colleague. Brainstorm's field pulsed with a mixture of surprise and sympathy as the ambassador relayed the situation.
"An accident with the Ciprua," Perceptor murmured, his processor whirring as he recalled the incident. "I'm afraid we didn't witness much after Traxies' temporal displacement. The laboratory was in a state of some disarray, and he returned shortly thereafter..."
The scientist's brow furrowed as he considered the implications. "If he has been isolating himself since then, and required Megatron's intervention..." Perceptor trailed off, clearly troubled by the thought.
All three of them go quiet thinking about it, Perceptor himself didn't quite trust Megatron, yes the war was over but after everything that had happened the scientist turned sniper still had a lot of issues trusting many mechs. But the next words out of the ambassador's mouth nearly freeze The two mechs in their place.
"What can you guys tell me about Shockwave?" They inquire. Perceptor's field pulsed with a somber cadence as the ambassador broached the subject of Shockwave. Brainstorm's own field flickered with a more tangible unease, the engineer's gaze dropping momentarily.
"Ah, Shockwave..." Perceptor began, his vocalizer heavy with the weight of history. "An unspeakably tragic figure, in many ways. A once-brilliant mind, warped beyond recognition by the cruelties of the past." The scientist's optic dimmed as he recounted the grim details. "As you may know, Shockwave was the victim of the Functionalist Council's barbaric practice of Empurata - the forcible removal of one's hands and face. A fate worse than deactivation, intended to strip an individual of their autonomy and identity."
Brainstorm shifted uncomfortably, at the haunted echo of the past. "And that was just the start of it. They didn't stop there - they also subjected him to the horrors of Shadowplay. Reprogramming his very processor, erasing his memories and personality… They messed him up good, he used to run the Jhiaxian Academy, I studied there it's where Perceptor and I first met”
The engineer's voice grew quiet, thick with visceral revulsion. " the council, Proteus and Sentinel twisted him into a cold, calculating machine - all the compassion and spark-fire that made him who he was, gone in an instant." He explains snapping his digits as if to show how quickly it happened.
Perceptor nodded solemnly, his optic reflecting the weight of that tragic history. "What Shockwave became, the Decepticon he transformed into... it was a perversion of his true self. A shell, bereft of the warmth and loved Senator that so many once loved, now if you were to say his name everyone knows him for only what he became."
The scientist's field rippled with a somber empathy. "It is a fate I would not wish upon any mech. Traxies bears a heavy burden, being the progeny of such a profoundly wounded spark." The Ambassador stiffens eyes wide for a second. "You know that Traxies Is his?" They asked almost in disbelief. They didn't think anyone else outside of a few mechs knew.
Perceptor and Brainstorm exchanged a weighted glance, their fields pulsing with a quiet confirmation. It was clear they had pieced together the truth long before the ambassador's revelation. "Yes, we... suspected as much," Perceptor admitted, his voice measured and thoughtful. "The resemblance between Traxies and the Senator is quite striking, even in the limited images we've seen. And his innate aptitude for the sciences, his fascination with the botanical… it nearly mirrors Shockwave's"
The scientist trailed off. "It did not take much for us to put the pieces together. We've kept this knowledge closely guarded, out of respect for Traxies and the gravity of his lineage. Shockwave Was a a great mech in the worlds of Science, and that mechlet doesn't deserve to be known for the mech Shockwave became"
Brainstorm nodded, sorrow written across what was visible of his face. "Yeah, the kid's been through the Pit and back. The last thing he needs is the whole world knowing he's related to Shockwave of all mechs, you know?" The engineer leaned in, his voice lowering to a conspiratorial murmur. "Primus knows what kind of slag he's had to deal with, growing up with that kind of shadow hanging over him. We figured it was best to let him come to terms with it in his own time."
Perceptor placed a reassuring hand on the ambassador's leg gently. "Rest assured, we will continue to guard this secret, and provide whatever support we can to Traxies, its the most we can do for the memory of the real Shockwave. He need not face this burden alone."
"I think most of the ship is figuring it out. Traxies didn't find out until Optimus dropped the bombshell on him, Ratchet's been trying to calm the kid down. And it gets worse" they sigh sitting down on the table. Perceptor and Brainstorm exchanged a troubled look, their fields mingling together bouncing their energy off each other as the ambassador revealed the full scope of the situation.
"Primus..." Brainstorm murmured, his optics widening with dismay. "The poor bitlet didn't even know? That must have been a real sucker punch to the spark..."
"And Ratchet is attempting to provide comfort and stability in the wake of such a revelation. I can only imagine the turmoil Traxies must be grappling with."
The scientist's brow furrowed as the ambassador mentioned that it could get worse. "Worse?" he repeated, dread lacing his tone. "What further revelations could possibly compound the burden Traxies now bears?"
Brainstorm leaned in, his field pulsing with a mix of concern and curiosity. "Yeah, spill the energon, what else is weighing on the little mech?."
" Traxies outlier ability, he can jump through time and space, he ended up on earth that's where he met Rattler, but Rattler had a human with him. They all ended up back in pre war Cybertrons from what I understand. The young man with them got taken. And that young man happens to be or well becomes Traxies… Traxies Dad, he's the human from the photos with Shockwave" the ambassador explains.
"I only recently found this out, but at the moment Traxies blaming himself for what happens to Shockwave and his Dad" Perceptor and Brainstorm's fields flared with shock and dismay. Preceptor's optic widened, the gears of his processor visibly whirring as he attempted to fully grasp the magnitude of the situation.
"Time travel?" Brainstorm breathed, his voice laced with a blend of awe and trepidation. "The kid can time travel? Primus, no wonder he's been through the Pit and back..."
"And now he blames himself for the fate that befalls his own... progenitor," Perceptor murmured, his voice tinged with profound sorrow. "The weight of such a burden is unimaginable."
"He's with Megatron at the moment" the ambassador says trying to stop them both. " he.. he just needs some time, surprisingly Megatron's rather good with him, didn't take the Ex warlord to be good with Kids, he's really pissed off at Optimus for keeping secrets from Traxies and I think Megatron might revoked his parol to Shoot Optimus for Traxies" the ambassador sighs, they look extremely tired and like they just want to melt away.
Perceptor's field flared with a protective surge as the ambassador mentioned Traxies' proximity to Megatron. But the scientist's movements slowed as the ambassador continued, a flicker of understanding passing through his field. "Megatron..." Perceptor murmured, his optic narrowing with contemplation. "I must admit, I did not anticipate such a... compassionate response from him, given the tumultuous history between our factions."
The scientist's gaze softened with empathy as he regarded the weary ambassador. "Huh, whadda ya know? Mister Big 'n Scary ain't completely heartless after all." The engineer's expression gentled as he regarded the ambassador. "Guess the kid's in good servos for now, then."
Perceptor nodded in agreement, his optic shining with a steadfast reassurance as he moved to place a comforting servo against the ambassador's side. "Then we shall trust in Megatron's discretion, and await the opportunity to offer our own support when the time is right."
"Just don't like seeing a kid hurt, even if he's like a three million year old alien robot kid" the ambassador chuckles leaning into the large servo currently cupping their side. Perceptor and Brainstorm were momentarily taken aback by the ambassador's uncharacteristic display of physical affection, their systems whirring as they processed the unexpected intimacy.
Perceptor flickered with a faint hint of flustered surprise, his field pulsing with a subtle warmth as the ambassador leaned against his palm. "Ah, well... yes, indeed," the scientist murmured, his voice slightly strained. "Traxies is quite a remarkable individual, despite his young age. It is only natural to feel compelled to protect him."
Brainstorm's cooling fans kicked into overdrive, the engineer's field radiating a mixture of bashfulness and a faint flicker of curiosity. "Uh, y-yeah, definitely," he stammered, offering the ambassador a slightly lopsided grin. "The little guy's got a big ol' target painted on his back, what with that whole Shockwaves Sparkling and time-travel thing and all. Gotta look out for him, you know?"
The scientist and engineer exchanged a furtive glance, their processors whirring as they tried to maintain their professional composure in the face of this unexpected display of intimacy. It was clear that the ambassador's actions had caught them off guard, their systems seemingly struggling to regulate the surge of sensations.
"W-well, in any case," Perceptor continued, clearing his vocalizer in a vain attempt to regain his usual measured demeanor, "you have our word that we shall do everything in our power to look after Traxies."
the Ambassador's eyes shoot open when they hear the internal fans, if it was any other person they wouldn't have even acknowledged it, but the Ambassador had heard the workings of the fans enough from Ratchet, Drift and Sunstreaker to know what it was. "Oh my God you two are as bad as Ratchet and Drift!" They laugh hearing the heavy sound of their internal fans. " Let me guess you both also saw the pinup photos on the hololink?" They tease, trying their best to catch the two scientists off guard.
Perceptor and Brainstorm's fields flared with a surge of embarrassment, their cooling fans audibly kicking into overdrive as the ambassador's teasing words struck home.
Preceptor's optic flashed with flustered dismay, his normally composed demeanor crumbling as he sputtered a response. "P-pinup photos? I - we, that is to say, I have no idea what you're referring to!"
Brainstorm, on the other hand, was practically squirming where he stood, his field betraying a distinctly guilty edge. "Uh, yeah, w-what Perce said! We were just, uh, y'know, doing our sciencey thing. Totally not ogling any, uh, inappropriate content or anything. Nope, not us!"
The engineer's optics darted nervously, his cooling fans whirring at an almost comical volume. "I mean, come on, do we look like a couple of overcharged, hormone-addled teenagers or something?" Perceptor fixed Brainstorm with a scandalized glare, his field pulsing with a clear warning to shut his vocalizer before he dug them in even deeper.
The ambassador's amused laughter only served to further the scientists' embarrassment, their systems practically whining under the strain of their heated reactions. It was clear they had been thoroughly caught off-guard, their usually professional demeanors crumbling in the face of the ambassador's teasing.
"Uh huh, is that what you tell yourself after your ogling last time I was in the lab, plus I'm also aware of some of the ranchy stuff you have said to other mechs Brainstorm about your 'human-fragger’ interest, I have eyes and ears everywhere" they state with a sly smirk on their lips.
mortification spreads across their faceplates, their cooling fans whirring at a deafening volume as the ambassador's teasing words laid bare their not-so-secret indiscretions.
Brainstorm's optics widened in abject horror, his field radiating a palpable blend of embarrassment and indignation. "W-what?! How did you - I mean, I don't know what you're talking about!" the engineer sputtered, his vocalizer practically glitching with the strain. Perceptor, for his part, looked absolutely scandalized, his optic narrowing to an incriminating slit as he fixed the ambassador with a disapproving glare. "I must insist that you refrain from spreading such...unfounded rumors," the scientist hissed, his field pulsing with a clear warning.
"Oh, I think we both know those rumors are anything but unfounded," they huff in amusement, their voice dipping to a sultry register that sent the scientists' systems into a fresh tailspin. It was clear the ambassador had the two brilliant scientists thoroughly enthralled, their usual intellectual prowess reduced to a flustered, hormone-addled mess in the face of the ambassador's relentless teasing.
"Relax, I'm aware that more than half the ship is interested. You two aren't the first, I just thought it was rather funny to fluster your fanning systems." They tease. "You mechs aren't very subtle about your interest, Ratchet was the one who actually had the boldness to ask for more than pics" they hum in a delighted voice.
Perceptor's field flared with a conflicted mixture of mortification and begrudging acceptance, his cooling fans still whirring at an elevated tempo. "I... see," the scientist murmured, his voice strained as he averted his gaze, unable to meet the ambassador's amused stare.
Brainstorm, on the other hand, squirmed uneasily, "W-wait, so you're saying... Ratchet asked you for more?" the engineer blurted, his optics wide with a mixture of shock and undisguised interest. Perceptor shot Brainstorm another scandalized glare, his field lashing out with a reprimanding pulse. "Brainstorm, really? Must you blurt out such... inappropriate inquiries?" the scientist hissed, his tone dripping with disapproval.
But Brainstorm was undeterred, "What? I'm just curious, that's all!" the engineer insisted, his gaze darting between Perceptor and the ambassador with barely contained eagerness.
The ambassador's amused chuckle only served to further fluster the two scientists, their fields radiating a heady blend of desire and trepidation. It was clear they were both thoroughly captivated, their usual intellectual prowess reduced to a flustered, hormone-addled mess in the face of the ambassador's tantalizing revelations.
The Ambassador smiles at them, shaking their head watching the two mechs argue. "You two are quite adorable when you bicker" they call to the two scientists.
"Well I guess I better be going again, thank you for letting me vent about everything, oh and we will be arriving back at Cybertron in I believe it's an Orn? Whatever your equivalent, of 2 weeks is" Perceptor reluctantly helps the ambassador down to the floor
Perceptor and Brainstorm's fields flared with a mixture of disappointment and reluctant understanding as the ambassador prepared to depart. Perceptor's optic softened with a hint of regret, his cooling fans still whirring at a slightly elevated pace. "I see... Well, we appreciate you taking the time to confide in us, ambassador," the scientist murmured, his voice tinged with a touch of wistfulness.
Brainstorm's field pulsed with a barely contained eagerness, the engineer's optics practically sparkling with a newfound determination. "Hey, wait! Uh, I mean-!"
"Brainstorm! Do try to maintain a modicum of professionalism, won't you?" the scientist chided, his tone tinged with a faint hint of envy.
With a final nod of farewell, the ambassador turned to depart, their steps light and their field radiating a renewed sense of purpose. "Until next time, then.” As the ambassador disappeared from view, Perceptor and Brainstorm were left in a state of flustered contemplation, their fields practically buzzing with a mixture of desire and trepidation. It was clear this encounter had left a lasting impression, one that would undoubtedly influence their future interactions with the captivating ambassador.

I know I already made a post critical of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, but I feel mean today and I want it to be said: Eric LaRocca's writing style is fucking insufferable for horror

I remember reading Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke for the first time. Can't say it's excessively disturbing, although, some parts still left me deeply affected.
I highlighted a few quotes, and as I went to reread them years later, it occurred to me how similar they sound to what Neil would say.
The mother-hurting-to-protect-thing
The eyes—what have you done to deserve them, Nathaniel, my greatest disappointment?
The "funeral for my former self"
And feeling more like myself when talking to you, because you are amazing! You're amazing, and it's always yes, and you know that I'd give you anything—
And Neil—after so many years running and hiding and keeping to himself—remembering that he has teeth too
I couldn't not write. It was my first fic in English, and I'm rather proud of it no matter what

I guess that’s what makes people do horrible things—they think whatever they’re doing isn’t nearly as bad as what somebody else will do.

Tbh in the days since reading things have gotten worse since was last spoke I’ve been ruminating a lot and I think my final conclusion is just….idk it has good ideas but no teeth. Like the concepts were pretty interesting, esp the tapeworm as birth thing. The ending with Agnes and the tapeworm really did hit hard for me for personal reasons. It’s sad certainly. But also it really doesn’t carry the shock that larocca wants it to. Not to mention Agnes’ whole desire for motherhood came out of nowhere. Idk it could have benefitted from slower pacing, and an actually good conclusion. Everything moved too fast, and I think if we sat with the couple, the slow descent would be more effective. Not to mention if they, I don’t know, descended into literally anything. It felt weak, and made it so Agnes’ death felt kinda random and anticlimactic. The only moments where larocca puts any amount of horror into the book is when Agnes is describing things OTHER PEOPLE have done. It’s not even a part of the plot!!! Idk maybe I went in with the wrong expectation. I’d been told it would be like toxic and fucked up and brutal. But instead it was just some cool concepts delivered in a very unsatisfying package
also like larocca is really bad at making these emails sound real good lord

I finally read Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke.
Every time I see people talking about how dark and disturbing a book is, I need to remember that I have a significantly higher tolerance than a lot of people. I'm not saying this book WASN'T dark and disturbing - I don't think anyone could argue it wasn't. But I definitely did not need to stay away from it despite being interested. I LIKE dark and disturbing. And honestly, you never know what's going to make your guts twist, what horror is going to follow you into the real world. I've been much more affected by books with way less reputation.
