This game has been out since Halloween.
In that time, there have been numerous Veilguard positive posts in which patient, loving, wonderful, insightful and intelligent individuals attempt to impart lore onto a fanbase which doesn't deserve their time and attention.
I can't believe I'm running across posts made within the past five days which express disgust and frustration towards the devs over things which have been explained in great detail multiple times on this site, BUT IN THE DAMN GAME.
AND Y'ALL KEEP COMPLAINING THE GAME TELLS BUT DOESN'T SHOW. AND YOU DON'T EVEN LISTEN OR WATCH.
"the crows are presented as wholesome" - they are not. this site has a crow fanbase which has run off and lionized Viago as Daddy, conveniently ignored all the in-game details which either hint or baldly state things Definitely Aren't Cool, and generally fetishized what it means to be a Crow because of Zevran and Lucanis. Then the same people, or others who weren't paying proper attention, whined when the headcanon crowded out the actual in-game material, and they said "Antiva is whitewashed." There have been multiple posts about this.
"slaves are meant to be everywhere in Tevinter and we don't see that" - we aren't everywhere, we're specifically in Docktown which is poor and people generally can't afford slaves there, but we do see evidence of slavery, and we run around with abolitionists and help save people from fascist slavers and free people who will either be slaves or victims of blood magic so IDK what to tell you, there have been multiple posts explaining this too, maybe leave your slave or savior fetish somewhere else.
"Racism is supposed to be rampant" - fuck off. I actually will not be explaining this because for once it was nice not to be called a slur. If you need this to feel "immersed" or to feel there are actual problems, I need you to check yourself fucking hard. If you want to masquerade what it feels like to experience bigotry, go play one of the prior games. This has also been discussed in multiple posts.
"Handling pure lyrium is fine now" no handling the dagger is fine Solas cleansed it, the dagger woke something up in Harding specifically she talks about how some dwarves are connected to the stone, she previously had not been one of them and maybe the dagger woke something up in her, or did you need a pop up explaining this? Were you paying attention during cut scenes and dialogue?
"Adult Dalish without vallaslin" - in the 10 years since Inquisition/Trespasser, doubtless some dalish have come to adulthood and found out what assholes their gods were and made the decision not to go through that specific cultural rites. Or maybe city elves joined the Dalish. Who knows who made up the elf population at that ritual site. Elves are not a monolith. We've made multiple, multiple posts about elves not being monoliths.
"Solas' opinion on blood magic went from neutral to negative" SOLAS FUCKING LIES. We've made multiple posts about Solas lying, if you need this explained further I suggest you play the game all over again, he lies to you throughout the entire game.
"Re-write of the after credits scene in Inquisition to recontextualise the Flemeth and Solas interaction" it's recontextualized because now we know who and what they were to each other. Learning new information does that. This is literally what happens all the time in science and history. You recontextualize what you thought you knew with new information. You're supposed to change your position, not whine about how the new information makes everything different.
These are just some of the things I pulled from a list on a post in which someone was really just upset about everything. Everything. Varric, Morrigan, Solas, everything. But I can't take their criticisms seriously, because they're upset that "too much was told" and "not enough shown" and yet didn't even pay attention to DA lore or in-game dialogue or context clues around the world of Northern Thedas to answer their own questions.
Everything in this game makes complete sense if you use lore from prior games and a single iota of imagination to see how it fits. We've had many delightful posts discussing this, seeing how things could be explained, when approaching the game from a place of curiosity rather than being upset because personal headcanons weren't satisfied or long-held expectations weren't met.

Exactly, there's probably a term for it but this is definitely a linguistics phenomenon: "Happy as a clam at high tide" is shortened to just "happy as a clam"; "Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back" is shortened to just "curiosity killed the cat."
Phrases are shortened because everyone in one or more generations knows the full saying/meaning, then younger generations hear the shortened version without ever having learned the full context.

I'm thinking about that remark color had told killer, in the comic where he couldn't move. That Killer has so much love to give. I think that's true based on killer's behavior.
With cross it's especially evident, I see traces of it with killer's other interactions as well.
To killer, who is a creature who had only been beholden to the harsh rules of Survival for so long it's weaves throughout everything that he is, to teach someone how to survive is a genuine act of care from him (even if he doesn't realize it).
It is not pretty or nice or even healthy. But to "teach" someone these rules he had to learn himself, in far more horrifc ways than he displays, seems like it's coming from a tender place in him. It's almost gentle the way he treats them compared to how nightmare or chara treated himself.
Like with Cross when they saw nightmare in the forest. Killer demonstrated proper behavior for someone "higher" than him, to show his belly and submit, because those are the only real options for survival here. Nightmare has killed him before and can most certainly do it again. He chastised Cross for his "incorrect" display. When he gave Cross his first strike, it was a lesson, that there is always consequences to an action. It doesn't matter if killer and him were friendly. Killer is above him physicality wise, he can and will inact punishment. You can't afford to be wrong in your risk assessment and blindly emotional if you are going survive.
Anyone can hurt you at anytime. There are creatures who lie and cheat and steal, so you have to be better at it then them. Take the dirty punches. Bite the hand that feeds if need be. It doesn't matter what you do as long as it keeps you alive.
All the while the sentiment shines through (I want you to live. I care about you enough to teach you how to live when I'm not here. Keep yourself safe, even if it's from me.)
It's not black and white. Nothing ever is. Abuse is abuse even if it's from good intentions but you can't deny that the love was never there. Both love and LoVe.
Context 1, context 2
You get it Anon, THANK YOU
Y’know, I haven’t really shown it properly yet, but this behavior will also be very evident when it comes to Murder and Horror
Killer acts as the right hand man to Nightmare, and while a lot of the time he’s very much an asshole with Murder and Horror, he definitely does “teach” them how to survive too, not necessarily out of genuine care for them, but instinctively, as well as the fact any “improper” behavior by them, can be used against him by Nightmare any time, in the sense of “it’s your job to make sure they behave”
You can see how that carries out to a time when Killer is finally out no? >:)

What is Legend’s and post-totk Wild’s relationship like? Does it change or is it the same?
Honestly, I keep trying to write an answer but all I have are inexplicable vibes.
It would change. Legend's the same as he was but Wild's grown up. Wild would be either 22 or 23 by the time TotK is over (in game we're told it's been 5 years since BotW) meanwhile Legend is still, at best, 17, but likely 16.
That's a 6-7 year age gap where before they were either the same age or very close.
Legend's still got his experience, but now Wild has the context of years, of knowing what normal looks like. Post BotW Wild has no concept of normal or peace, but post TotK Wild would have spent 5 years just existing and doing People Things. He knows what normal kids are like now. He's a teacher. He's a leader. He's an adult, even if he's still a young one. But he's got that frame of reference that Legend never has had of what life looks like after the adventure, but now also with the understanding that legend does have of the fact that heroes' can be ripped away any time, life uprooted to save the world again at any moment.
Wild has life experience that Legend can't fathom. Wild knows what growing up is like. Wild knows what peace looks like now.
Legend doesn't even know what the word "retirement" means, much less "stop" or "peace". He's used to having only enough time to heal between adventures before heading out again, if that!
I think Wild would come back, thinking he could slip back in, just to realize he can't see his brothers the same anymore. I won't dig in too deep, since you just asked about him and Legend, but for the vet I think he'd just get shocked at how young his brother really is, by how screwed up Legend's outlook on life is, and I think he'd be floundering because the guy he used to look to as a veteran, an expert and a role model, is actually just a teenager with too much responsibility on his shoulders.
I don't think he'd know what to do with that, because that's still his brother, but Legend's no longer his BIG brother, or at least not his peer. Legend's younger than him now, and much as he tries to see the vet the same way he used to, he'd just keep realizing how screwed up everything about Legend really is.
Meanwhile Legend, Mister Abandonment-Issues, would be over here struggling with the feeling of being left behind and out of the know and suddenly feeling small around a hero who used to make him feel so big. Wild's an adult now, but he's not supposed to be. Wild's matured now (but still Wild) and he's not sure what to do with that. Wild is wiser now, knows things, isn't charging in without thought anymore, and Legend has to adjust his whole perception all while wondering if this is even the same guy. All while trying his hardest not to let on that he feels that way because you bet your BUTT this kid has gotten enough grief over the years for not being the same kid people used to know that he has no wish to make anyone else feel that.
Like, adventures change you, a LOT. Legend's had a lot of adventures, ergo; he's changed a ton over the years and it definitely throws off everyone who knows him every single time. it's not his first rodeo, but it is the first time he's not been the one riding the bull that is change.
I think they'd both struggle a lot with this. I think there'd be a lot of frustration and fear on Legend's side and a lot of shock and confusion on Wild's. I think both would grieve, and I know Legend wouldn't be the one to know how to fix it.
Legend fixes problems, but the thing that sets him apart from the rest of the heroes is that he's never had time between adventures to actually process and learn healthy coping mechanisms or ways to express himself. Kid knows how to fix other people's shit, but never his own.
Wild would have to be the one to cross the divide between them, and as the older brother now, I think that would just make it all the weirder for both of them.
Anyways, congrats, I had enough brainrot about this that I wrote a dang fic and then sobbed for a good ten minutes in a public coffee shop T-T
Thanks for the ask!

Season 3 Official Trailer Breakdown
*Huge disclaimer that this show is so unpredictable that all of my guesses will probably be wrong. I know many of these shots are probably misdirections and missing important context.*
Lottie spotted alive and well and looking great (with a bodyguard? Or just a very well dressed man?)
A series of scenes that imply Nat is definitely in some hot water this season. It seems that she might have known where Coach Ben was but didn’t tell the group to protect him, which pisses the rest of the group off enough to question her leadership. Unlike Lottie, Nat wasn’t chosen by the group to lead them, which will likely result in tension and resentment from those who feel like she didn’t earn her new title. The group is shifting towards ferocity and darker morals, so maybe Nat can't meet the group’s needs or take them down the path they want to go on. Maybe the trial we saw in the first trailer was actually related to Nat? But why would Coach Ben be there in the background for that?
With the way Nat looks on her knees in the middle of the group and the vitriol she seems to be facing, I am so interested to see how she makes it out of this alive. However, I do think it’s important to note that, in the close up shot we get of her with blood on her face, there are no actual wounds visible. It could be someone else’s blood!
And related to that, we see the group setting up what appears to be a makeshift table. As we saw with Javi, I wonder if this table is being set up to butcher something (or someone) on. Or just to have a nice innocent family feast on.
I think it’s interesting to note that the clip immediately following this is Nat in what appears to be an apron with her hair pulled back. To me this looks like Nat is going to be the one doing the butchering in this scene (the apron and her hair being pulled back implies that she’s trying not to get blood on her clothes and hair). Could Nat be relegated to Shauna’s role as the butcher after Shauna becomes the new leader? Or is she just filling in for the moment?
It looks like Travis might be getting bit here (by Shauna?) while Lottie laughs. I really have no guesses as to what’s going on here. Maybe Travis stood up for Nat and therefore was attacked? I have a feeling Travis is going to be very conflicted as to where his loyalties lie this season, which might make him a target. The first image could actually be Mari getting the chomp, though, as we have already seen a clip of Shauna biting her hand in the previous trailer.
It looks like Tai is attacking Van here (!!), which I'm willing to bet is Other Tai taking over, and we also see Tai screaming and crying (which I'm guessing is related to her attacking Van?). I'm wondering if this could be some kind of nightmare Taissa is having of losing control and hurting Van, which reflects how she is afraid of herself and her lack of control over her darker alternate. Or it could be her actually attacking Van. And is it just me or does it look like they are wearing the same outfits in the attacking scene and the scene where they're running through the street?
It looks like Shauna (and likely the other survivors) will be receiving some threatening letters and tape recordings from an unknown source (Shauna says that someone is trying to kill them for what they did in the wilderness). It looks like Shauna received both a letter (notably addressed to Shauna Shipman, not Sadecki, which could be a way of hinting that this person knows her past) and a tape? And then it looks like she is trying to secretly play the tape in her bathroom (trying to hide it from Callie and Jeff?).
There's another clip of Mari running from the group again and hiding behind a tree, very reminiscent of when Nat hid behind the tree after drawing the Queen card in S2. Even though Mari does look genuinely scared here, the second clip of Mari laughing with Van in what appears to be the same scene makes me wonder if this is actually not Mari running for her life and rather just a fun game the YJs are playing. Maybe they're literally playing tag or something? Or maybe they were playing a harmless game which quickly devolved into something darker.
A closer shot of Tai holding the gun. This time, we can see she is not as stoic as she appeared in the promotional images we saw before. She's crying, and I feel like that combined with the following clip of blood splattered on some leaves nearby confirms that Tai put to the task of shooting someone in this scene. Mari is in the background, so its not her, so is it Coach Ben? Why is Tai the one chosen to carry it out?
We see more of that scene where Shauna is being pulled down into the lake by someone/something. I truly have no idea what is going on in this scene. I am kind of hoping that its Nat taking revenge and trying to threaten her/drown her but I am 90% sure that's not going to happen. Who do we think would try to drown Shauna?
Pretty sure this is Mari spraying Shauna with some kind of mace! And by the looks of it, Shauna probably deserves it (sorry). Maybe this is following the scene where Shauna is trying to bite Mari's hand and then Mari sprays her with whatever this is to defend herself?
A shot of a hooded figure holding the rifle, with some other hooded figures following behind. To me this looks like some kind of search party, like they are hunting someone down who ran away and hid. I wonder if they're looking for Nat? Especially after Shauna's "We'll give the wilderness what it wants" line. They could also be searching for Coach Ben or Mari.
Tai and Misty about to smother someone to death in a hospital?? I would think this person must know too much about what they did in the wilderness and therefore they have to kill him. Another part of me is really just hoping they're smothering Lottie's dad to death because I know he's going to be in this season and I really hate that guy, but I am also pretty sure that's just wishful thinking on my part.
Things aren't looking too good for Akilah. The expression on her face and the way she's being held up by someone make it seem like she just got shot or stabbed/is actively dying. But not sure if they would be bold enough to show that in the trailer. Whatever is happening to Akilah here, she definitely doesn't look like she's doing too great.
I'll say it: I think we're getting a Pit Girl reveal this season! Or at least we will get up to the point in the storyline right before Pit Girl. These are the same outfits we see the group donning in the opening scene of the pilot episode. We can clearly see the skunk head (referred to as The Hunter in the script) who was standing over the pit trap looking down at Pit Girl's body. It is still pretty impossible to tell who's who. But I think this tells us that Season 3 will go through spring, summer, and into the beginning of the second winter (or we could just be getting flash-forwards to winter). Looks like they've gone full feral at this point, they've got spears and they are definitely hunting someone down. I wonder if this is actually the Pit Girl scene itself, just from the perspective of the hunters now instead of the prey.
This is pretty much confirmed to be Lottie given that we have behind the scenes photos of Simone Kessell wearing this exact dress and heels. Lottie, I am so scared for you, please be okay. hoping she's just passed out or something. Or maybe she just got tired and she's taking a nap...on a dark mysterious concrete floor surrounded by candles.
And last but absolutely not least we have Lottie eating the fuck out of someone with blood all over her face. The cannibalism in this season has been turned up to 11 for sure.
--
There are some shots that I left out because I ran out of room! There are just so many details in this trailer that I want to unpack, but I tried to pick out the ones I found most important. Some other important shots not mentioned were the arrow in the tree trunk (I'm guessing this is actually the adult timeline since I'm really not sure where the girls would get an arrow like that in the wilderness, unless it belongs to someone outside of the group👀), a Queen card being picked up off the street in the adult timeline, the floating lantern scene we have seen in promotional photos, the girls having a feast, Travis walking with the rifle, and the girls running around their makeshift huts having fun (wholesome).

Ok, a few of these things are being taken out of context, which is not to downplay people’s experiences but quick rundown of what people in the notes have pointed out:
1. Yes HOAs can regulate they don’t want you growing seeds, but that’s pretty rare and most places do allow vegetable and flower gardens. There are also plenty of places where growing seeds are perfectly fine. This may be referencing how we’re technically not allowed to plant on public land or other private property without permission(hence seed bombing).
Someone said it could be referencing how Farmers are regulated in the seeds they buy, with companies suing if they aren’t using their particular brand. That is real, although I don’t on hand know if this happens in other countries besides ours.
2. Mowing your lawn can have city ordinances, but in certain places this is to avoid hazards like fires(re: California), pests, and public health risks. It’s less about the lawn being messy, and if it is that’s most likely again an HOA.
3. The last one about fees seems to be a story about someone recently being fined at a clinic, but I’ll need to research that one more. I’ll come back and edit this once I find it, but I’ve never heard of something like that. It may be hospitals and insurance being dicks before you ask for itemized charges, just to see what they can get away with, which is a well known practice.
There’s a lot of shit we do have going on, and the other stuff mentioned are definitely real. It’s just these things that may need extra information or context.
being on this app is so surreal. americans are usually the ones that learn about other places and people everywhere else already know about america because we're everywhere online. we've never been on the opposite side where other people are learning about us -- and they are horrified about our "normal"
the country america spent our whole lives trying to convince us is miserable and suffering under an oppressive government that starves everyone and controls their media? that's just projection. turns out besides like... housing prices and few available jobs, china is doing pretty great. they originally believed we were all living it up "the american dream" way and now they're all thankful they were born in china and have no idea how any of us are even alive

From early in Ozy's recent post urging more people to ask people out:
Straight men should ignore all these considerations and just ask people out. Straight women never ask anyone out. If you wait for them all to read and be convinced by the Asking People Out Manifesto, you’ll die a virgin.
Welp. Thanks for once again confirming and kinda-sorta implicitly condoning our deeply entrenched gendered norms around who initiates what and the fact that it's not going to change any decade soon. The exact framing and tone in the context of dating advice of "[shrug] as the guy, you're just expected to be the one to do this, that's just the way it is [subtlest hint of apologetic tone]" that I'm used to and complained about most of a decade ago.
I really don't want to be harsh on Ozy's article here. Ozy is approaching this from rationality and practicality and it's definitely helpful to be able to just state reality here. And they are one of the only non-male/conservative/PUA-ish bloggers I know of who has been consistently willing to give actual asking-out advice over the whole past decade. And their post is mostly good, I think, with maybe only a couple of points I have issues with.

Tiny Ancient one 🩸⚔️🍷
Here is my take on Amren from A Court of Thorns & Roses
I personally pictured her as drake-like considering she acts like a dragon who likes to hoard baubles and jewels. It definitely would make her more off-putting if she didn’t look *entirely* fae. I originally drew her in early fall of 2024 and just hated how I rendered her face until I repainted it a week ago. And holy shit…I am in love with her now. You don’t understand how obsessed I am with her nose and eyes.
Also I am unashamedly slapping my watermark everywhere now because people on TikTok and Pinterest don’t know how to act properly and repost my artwork without tagging me (this was literally my only request if you’re gonna repost my work). Definitely did not appreciate my artwork going viral and not finding out about it until some people shouted me out in the comments of a TikTok post….the same post where people were being outright rude and making ignorant comments on my Sinbad x Nessian art. This is what happens when reposters don’t tag the artist where context behind the art can be given.

i’m positive you’ve answered this before, but what is a stone identity (if so you can just put a link if you don’t want to explain again)? and is there a more gender neutral term for it? like as in “stone butch” “stone femme” (those are just the two i immediately thought of) but for more gendernonspecific people?
i’m genderfluid, and personally don’t like the labels “enby” and “nonbinary” because of how fast my gender jumps around, like ill feel pretty lenient one day and then everything BUT this one pronoun feels gross and wrong (sometimes nothing feels right and ill seriously contemplate going by no pronouns). it feels sometimes i am within the binary (feeling very masc/manly for example) and then other times nothing can even describe my gender. the closest i can get is “creature” but that’s still far off. so its pretty hard to find terms to describe me sometimes, especially with the two more common gender neutral labels out of the running from the start 😬
thinking i may fall under the stone label because i don’t exactly like the idea of being pleasured myself (in the context of sex with another person), i moreso am interested in pleasuring the other for their reaction/expression. like i don’t even find erogenous zones very appealing but i would adore seeing/making a partner feel good like that, i dunno.
Well, I feel like some of the posts in my #Stone Education tag can explain it better but to put it simply, it's an identity that communicates sexual boundaries.
There's a lot of nuance to it, so take this definition with a grain of salt but for a lot, it means having specific boundaries around receiving/giving sexual touch/pleasure and penetration.
As for a gender neutral version of stone, there's Stone Top and Stone Bottom! What you're describing sounds like Stone Top, where you prefer/only top and don't like receiving sexual pleasure/touch.
By the way, your gender sounds very cool! I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions! <3

🌤️ (for the ask game!)
🌤️Share your favorite piece of dialogue from your WIP. from this ask game
from the siren!AU aka Curiositas. for context: Lando and Oscar just met, and are out at sea™
For a moment Lando panics, realising he never told Oscar to bring any food for himself, he doesn’t even know what humans eat and oh fuck is Oscar is going to starve because of him-
“Uhm,” Oscar interrupts Lando’s spiralling thoughts “so I brought... definitely not enough canned food and a portable cooker.” Lando’s heart rate sinks back to normal. He notes how Oscar was somehow conscious enough to take preparation steps for their journey even through the haze of Lando’s spell, which is a bit strange but Lando doesn’t really know how the spell works so he files it away as convenient instead of concerning.
“I assume you can hunt for some fish, but I'll have to ask you to catch some for me when I run out if that's alright by you.”
There’s only one small problem with that, Lando stays silent for a second before replying.
“I don't like fish.”
Not only did Lando forget to make sure this guy he’s practically kidnapping wouldn’t starve to death, he’s about to give him another reason to loathe Lando. The first human he’s ever talked to will hate him just like his colony, because he’s weird and useless and-
“Whaddya mean you don't like fish? Isn't that like, what you eat? Or is that cannibalism-”
Well Lando has never heard of can-a-ball-is-him or whatever it is Oscar just said but that sounds vaguely insulting, and he can admit he’s a bit strange but he’s not about to let himself be insulted like that by someone he’s barely just met. What does Oscar know about sirens anyway?
He cuts Oscar off. “Just don't like it, okay?” His voice comes out a lot higher than he intended it to, pitch betraying the hurt behind the words, but there’s still a chance to course correct. “I'll get some.. birds or whatever.”

Emotionally this scene is so hot and intense. Zhuo Yichen demanding answers from Zhao Yuanzhou, for it, for him to make sense, especially in the context of his own (already awakened) feelings. And it must be driving our boy literally insane - the contradiction of Zhao Yuanzhou being his family's killer, the one demon who single-handedly destroyed the Demon Hunting Bureau (which was kind of everything ZYC ever knew at that point, that it was it, his life was just that, and his future as well).
And Zhu Yan destroyed not only his family, nearly cutting down the whole lineage apart from Zhuo YIchen, but also the organization, that was put to a halt and nearly ceased to exist, and he literally took whatever meaning Zhuo Yichen's life had and threw it in the gutters. So ZYC was not simply alone, with his whole family dead, but also meaningless and without a place to go, or to be, or something to do in this world, his ancestral home becoming a limbo of sorts, with him - a lost soul that had no means to move on, to start living again.
Because he was an anomaly from the start and whatever he would become - would always be in the context of demons, and BIng Yi, and murders, and investigations, and all that weird stuff that most people considered as nightmares personified. He was already a part of all that even when he didn't really know it himself, just following his brother around, just being, just going through that archive of books and writings about monsters that were actually his kin in a way (and when he learns that Bing Yi was, actually, a demon, in my headcanon that would have shattered his self-identity quite a bit, at least for some time).
And now we meet this boy, already a young man, who has single-handedly restored the Demon Hunting Bureau, finding it in himself to build his own meaning of life from scratch, getting back that place in life he thought was his and that it mattered, and that his service to all those people was what he's supposed to do (and probably, the only thing he could do being an anomaly, an outcast, someone stuck between the worlds of humans and demons). He has more in common with Wen Xiao than we might think upon meeting him first. She's a bridge between the demon and human worlds, but he's also a bridge, or rather a shield protecting the human world from the demons and, as he later learns, maybe simply protecting the innocent, be it demon or human, from the ones that want to hurt them, no matter what realms they come from.
And so he meets Zhao Yuanzhou having just figured things out for himself, and suddenly learns that the world, again, isn't so black-and-white and even that gruesome hideous murder had so many layers to it and wasn't at all what he perceived it to be. And the man who had been his dreamless nightmare all these years turned out to be a whimsical creature that only appeared to be dangerous when he first saw him, yet possessed no killer intent whatsoever. And in fact, turned out to be a protector as well, trying to protect everyone from himself first and foremost.
And he watches this gorgeous mysterious man, as complex as he is, getting close to Wen Xiao, whom Zhuo Yichen adores more than any other woman in this world (emphasis on woman) and he already has feelings for Zhao Yuanzhou as well, however suppressed and unfathomable they are for now, and he wants this man to give him answers, but whatever Zhao Yuanzhou can give him - it's not that. It's not the certainty of being bad enough to just kill him and be done with it, and it's definitely not a certainty that he deserves to be killed at all. And even not the certainty of him seeking death at this point, even though he continues to talk about it, but it's not so strong now, not to the extent that it was before, when Zhuo Yichen first met the Great Demon.
And this is where he finds himself that night, when Zhao Yuanzhou finally approaches him for that don't-hesitate-to-murder-me pep talk, and Wen Xiao is brought up, and his newly found will to live (or something close to it) through that affection only, but Zhuo Yichen doesn't know it yet, that it's not just that affection that keeps this demon from deteriorating into the depths of despair facing that goddamn horrifying blood moon all over again, that destroyed so many lives, including the life of this gorgeous young and so very sensitive Zhuo Yichen. That there's another type of affection and feeling and need that draws him to Zhuo Yichen that night in an attempt to protect him from this, as best as he can, giving him that immunity from the one-word spell, and asking him to live well no matter what happens next, knowing already that it might turn into a bloodbath at some point.
But this time ZYZ is as proactive as he can be, and he trusts Zhuo Yichen enough to kill him or at least to stay alive and protect Wen Xiao. It will be bad, he knows that much, but at this moment and in this instance he comes to spend this time of his own uncertainty with Zhuo Yichen not only because the boy needs this to stay strong and to realize what he's actually facing, but also because Zhao Yuanzhou needs him to stay strong himself with whatever ZYZ is facing again, with that glaring possibility of losing control and wreaking havoc everywhere, with this one young man, truly, being the only one who could stop him at this point. Kill him. Save him from this torment. And it's heavy, and Zhao Yuanzhou knows it is, so he goes for that talk and talks carefully around the very notion of ending his life, but also - about that and that only, sensing Zhuo Yichen's confusion as if it was truly his own, and that turmoil of emotions, and that need to understand, to make everything make sense somehow.
And so they talk. And do some magic. And none of them gets much relief after that conversation is over, but there's a certainty now. That at least this one boy would be protected from the Great Demon's magic. And if he has a chance of surviving the blood moon, than so does Wen Xiao (who probably is protected by their contract anyway, but Zhuo Yichen isn't, and it matters to Zhao Yuanznou already oh-so-much).
And Zhuo Yichen is left even more strained and confused than before because of all the contradictions he's facing, this demon acting not like an enemy, even though he's about to become one, but rather like a caring friend. And what is he supposed to make out of all that? When he simply doesn't, just doesn't want to kill him, no matter what.
#I just love this boy so much#the complexity of Zhuo Yichen's character#along with his very dramatic storyline#and what he chose to do with that life of his#finding new meanings#and never letting it cripple him#just moving forward no matter what#keeping his heart so open and vulnerable#even for that Great Demon to find a place inside of it#to never ever leave it again#and that's how they find a home in each other#just seeping into each other's hearts like that#bit by bit#thought by though#word by word#one caring action following the other#they just make my drama-loving heart melt in all possible ways :D#yuanyi#zhuo yichen#zhao yuanzhou#fangs of fortune#fangs of fortune meta#fangs of fortune ep.15

Honestly, rereading books you are assigned at school as a teen hits so differently in your 30s (and i assume in your 50s etc). I was forced to pay attention to the details and re-read it several times to write assignments, so I already had background knowledge. But then i pick it up to re-read as an adult and I'm not being graded anymore so i can enjoy it without worrying. And oh man, remembering how you felt tells you a lot!
Like Wuthering Heights? I was such an emo love sick teenager, so i thought it was so romantic. Oh boy. Reading that as a happily married adult was eye opening as to how angsty i really was!
Also, with books with adaptations, i like to go in the following order dropping off/skipping steps depending on how obsessed i get:
1. Movie (because it's almost always a disappointment to watch a movie of a book because they never have enough time to include all the good bits). Normally, watching a movie takes less time than reading a book and i multitask usually anyway so not much of a commitment.
2. Audiobook (to get more juicy details about all the stuff they couldn't put in movie). Can still do things with my hands while listening. I have ADHD so I'll probably miss lots of details but I'll probably have missed lots of the movie too for similar reasons so whatevs.
3. Movie again to rewatch with all the background juicy details you got from the book.
4. TV show - they generally have time to do all the good bits of a book, so I'll normally do this after reading the book first.
5. Consume all interviews and other promo material
6. Read the book with my eyeballs because maybe(definitely) i missed something when i was listening to the audiobook.
7. Deep dive onto Tumblr/Reddit/Wikipedia/tv tropes to see trivia/fan theories/other people's interpretations/any historical context.
8. Find out about the game from 7. And spend the next week without sleeping to finish it. Listen to audiobook while playing if levels need grinding.
People who don't re-read books are so funny to me. "I know what happens"..?? Gurl I know what pizza tastes like, still gonna eat another one. I know what a rainbow looks like, you think that'll stop me running outside, camera in hand, to see the next one?

bison : resident noob dom extraordinaire
context : there was a discourse going on on twitter (as per usual) about whether bison is actually a dom or not or if it's just a trauma response that he may grow out of and eventually realize that he is not into bdsm. or something.
before i begin anything,
disclaimer : OP has both good and bad experience, so this meta/rant is entirely written based on my own understanding and experience within the BDSM community and with partners.
now, let's begin.
the original tweet that sparked the debate (also i think OP's QT aiming at “self proclaimed bdsm connoisseurs” is snooty and entirely dismisses all their arguments before and after that) (but that's just me)
the tweet with the counter argument?? i guess???
in support of the OG tweet
now that i've laid all that out, i'll begin by saying :
the idea of anyone being a “natural dom” or there being something like “natural dominance” in the context of sexual preferences is inherently harmful and sets people, both the dom and the sub, up for having a bad experience, or worse, being abused.
i know this statement wasn't from OP, but considering how they are on about the “bdsm connoisseurs” flooding their mentions, i think they should have addressed this since it's in support of their tweet. anyway.
now, i agree in part with OP's take :
bison is definitely influenced by his entire life being surrounded by violence. we have a young adult who has mostly no control over his life or how he lives it. he has witnessed violence and now he is in the center of it, and nevermind how good he is at his job, bison has made it clear he doesn't want to kill. bison has also told us that “pain kinda excites me.” so, just because his sexual lifestyle might be a trauma response, it doesn't mean he “isn't really a dom” or that his behaviour is “not rooted in natural dominance”. the idea of “natural dominance” is moreover, in my opinion, based on unrealistic patriarchal ideals and if you squint, this is a not so subtle shade on our young twinky dom as well.
so now let's look at bison as he is introduced to us :
witnesses the murder of his parents, clearly traumatized, get “adopted” by some shady ass woman who puts him back into a system where he is the one now inflicting violence, bison realizes at some unknown point of time that he “wants to be in control” because “pain kinda excites me” and purchases all sorts of bdsm paraphernalia, except he never dates because of his profession, until he meets kant who dupes him into trying out s&m, and bison very much enjoys his first play, fast forward to the falling out and kidnapping of kant and the fighting and make-up, and finally the scene in question that sparked the OG tweet :
in this scene, bison admits that he goes out and does fun things, like bowling, right after a kill, to take his mind off it. clearly, he doesn't like it. we already know this, bison has always insinuated to fadel that he wants an out and it's evident he doesn't hunger for the kind of violence he is made to dole out. but this is the first point we see him actually address this and outright say he deliberately does light-hearted activities to disengage from the aftermath of a kill. we also see him admit to the difficulties of a hitman's lifestyle and this particular piece of dialogue shows that whether he enjoys it or not, he is good at his job and he has made his peace with it. so where does his need for control fit in here?
in previous episodes (#2, tattoo parlour scene), bison admits to wanting control in bed, but he doesn't clearly state whether he is the S or the M. coupled with this omission, his “pain kinda excites me” dialogue makes me think he is both into giving and receiving pleasure from pain.
anyway, coming back to the main point, bison's need for control in bed may very well (and i've been suspecting it for a while) arise from his difficult lifestyle and his lack of say in how he lives, considering he is a hitman and (has to) reports to mother probably everything he does. for a 24yo, that's not the best case scenario. assuming bison was immediately adopted after the murder of his parents, he did not have a lot of (if any at all) time to explore himself or live his life in a way he sees fit. we know he sleeps around (that's his M.O. after all in most missions, i believe) and that's probably the only place where he could excersize any control or take charge. but we also know he hasn't done any s&m play before. so with the introduction of kant and the whole bdsm shebang, we can tell bison is exhilarated to finally be calling the shots and leading in bed in a way he and his partner both find pleasurable. and since he has all the tools and knows his own desires, it's safe to assume wants to be a dom. now whether he is or not, let's see.
we'll address the “natural dominance” debate here.
in the very first interaction with kant (who is older, btw, let's keep that in mind), he immediately tells off kant for being patronizing towards him. if you live anywhere in asia, you'll know it's kinda rude to talk back to older people. so even though they are in an informal setting, and the age rules don't apply here as such, bison doesn't shy away from putting kant in his place.
in the red room, we can see kant take the bed but bison walks away from him and takes the loveseat. in this scene, it is clear kant is used to leading, so he expects bison to listen to what he says. but bison (bless my boy), very easily throws him off by remaining seated and gesturing kant to come to him. kant still tries to keep his ground, but ultimately he makes the most pathetic meow meow begging face and that's when bison finally lets him have it. even after this, we can see kant is used to topping and pulling the strings, but bison once again throws him off by saying, “you are not doing this solo, you know?”
this whole exchange immediately defines their roles in the current setting and imo, is a very subtle foreshadowing for their future interactions.
in the tattoo bed scene, bison is excited beyond measure to be finally introducing and sharing his kink with kant and while initially we could see kant trying to lead this interaction, there are subtle signs/actions from bison that shows how he prepares kant for his submissive role : the slap to the hand on his thigh and kant's little flinch and gasp (one of my fave scenes from first, the micro-expressions were outstanding), the little slaps to his cheek before bison departs, etc.
i could go on and on, but the “natural dominance” that QTOP claims bison doesn't have, is actually out there taking a walk in broad daylight lmao. i think their intent was to say that because bison's dominance doesn't exist irrespective of his trauma but actually goes hand-in-hand with it, it's less valid than say, a dom who doesn't have a violent past and trauma related to it.
the question now here would be how good of a dom he is and whether he lets his trauma define his status as a dom. so far, there have been no signs of bison misusing his power and control over kant during a play (i believe we cannot count the drunk bison whipping kant scene here for obvious reasons). but so far, while bison was sober, he hasn't abused his power over kant during one of their plays. until very recently that is, and outside bed, does bison actually makes use of his power over kant : kidnapping and outrageous demands because he is hurting, but, the moment kant uses his safeword, bison drops everything and pulls away. from my experience, bison is very much a good dom so far, but he is also inexperienced, excited, in love, and under-informed (or that bit may just be the sloppy writing).
the word “natural dominance” suggests to me that QTOP expects bison to be in his dom role all the time, but it's not very often that people adapt their sexual preferences and make it into a lifestyle. doms are caregivers (by this, i mostly mean they lead and guide the sub and provide care/pleasure during and after any scene) in bed and outside of it should it be an exclusively d/s relationship with that kind of lifestyle. we haven't seen bison and kant discuss their dynamics or how they are going to implement it anywhere outside a particular scene. moreover, bison so far hasn't indicated that he wants kant and himself to be exclusively a d/s pair. rather, he is very much a romantic and likes doing all sorts of things that a stereotypical younger twinky bottom male in a gay relationship is supposed to do. even in the swing scene, bison is affectionate with kant the same way he was before learning the truth. the only difference we feel now is because bison finally knows the whole truth and is letting himself freely accept affection that he was holding himself back from when he was suspicious of kant's motives (even after getting together with him). so bison's cutesy actions in this ep are not because he doesn't have the dom bone in his body or because he hungers for affection but gravitates towards domination because of his cycle of violence. he is free and affectionate and it feels different now compared to before is because his entire relationship with kant is no longer sitting on a bed of lies and they have both come clean. this ultimately changes their body language and how they interact with each other. therefore, bison's desire to lead is just as strong as his desire to be cared for (leaning on his boyfriend, being cute, cuddly, etc) and both exist on opposing sides of the same sphere that's bison's life.
therefore, i think it's kind of ridiculous to say his actions/behaviour isn't rooted in “natural dominance”. I'm not even sure what that is supposed to mean except that QTOP either thinks bison is supposed to be some caricature dom who likes leading both in bed and outside it. because that, my friends, is not how most relationships (bdsm and otherwise) work. or that he is a christian grey 2.0 (which, 🤣🥹).
so what i urge most readers/watchers to do here is separate bison's innate ability to inflict violence effectively in his job from his desire to dominate and use pain for pleasure in bed. both are different things and not mutually exclusive.
i think most of us need to give up on whatever 50SoG “taught” us about bdsm and actually look at this whole thing realistically. also, i think from all this info it's clear bison isn't gonna change his dom status anytime soon and for valid reasons. so from what we have seen him do so far, i can safely say he knows what he wants and he will very much keep wanting to play with kant while he calls the shots.
therefore it's important that we see bison's character from a realistic pov instead of whatever christian grey was. yes, he craves control because he doesn't have it in most instances of his life. but also yes, he craves romantic affection from his partner because he is a fool in love. both of these things can co-exist. what we need to remember is that just because someone is a dom doesn't mean they only need to be a sadist or be a top (I'm looking you, vegas).
in the future eps, bison might settle more into his skin and he may (however unlikely) realize he doesn't need to demand as much control (not that he is doing that a whole lot now). but, we still have 4 more episodes left and I don't think we'll be covering that anyway. so, my final verdict is bison is very much a dom, but he is a total “noob dom” (as i fondly like to call him) and will get many things wrong before he gets them right. but kant will be there along the way to learn alongside him, so no worries about that.
anyway, rant is over. cheers.

Further contemplated the femslash Spirk concept while I was going to sleep, inevitably, and concluded:
I am perfectly aware this has been done before in the last, you know, nearly 60 years of this ship's towering fandom influence; I've definitely seen art and cosplay. However, I'm deliberately insulating myself from reading any other versions until the finer details are more nailed down in my own head.
McCoy is definitely still a man (specifically DeForest Kelley c. TOS) because it only later occurred to me that 1) thematically, I definitely prefer this trio as a mixed gender group and 2) the advocate for emotion and instinct and human warmth being a male doctor and the voice of logic and discipline being a woman and technically his superior pleases me greatly. I also like the McCoy-Kirk brotp as a male-female friendship that is intense, complex, and 100% platonic.
I'm still figuring out how Kirk being repeatedly menaced by the woman of the week would pan out with f!Kirk. With m!Kirk it feels like the show pushes him having an irresistible appeal to women in general (regardless of the woman's morality) that is where this ultimately comes from, but he's got a lot of Odysseus tropes to him as a character that make his femme fatale allure and willingness to use it as a tool more interesting than as the inevitable fate of a female space captain. Also, even in a femslash context, it feels homophobic for it to always be women sexually harassing f!Kirk.
Kirk's going to be Jessica instead of my original idea of Deborah. I was thinking of what would be a sturdy, ordinary name in the Midwest comparable to James that would also abbreviate conveniently to a common short form (Jim / Deb / Jess). I wanted the shortened version to be something that could carry the emotional weight of Spock's very occasional "Jim" without feeling that the nickname itself is more significant than Jim is for a dude from Iowa. I also wanted to avoid the -y/-ie endings of so many English nicknames (sorry, Francophones). Deb seemed to work well enough, except I'd forgotten that I have a considerably older family friend who not only uses Deb (and is named Deborah) but happens to have very similar coloring and background to young Shatner. As I was plotting the femslash, the association with her felt increasingly weird and uncomfortable, so I switched to Jessica (chosen for reasons largely unrelated to it also beginning with J, but that helps!).
Does Jessica Kirk wear the miniskirt and go-go boots while issuing non-negotiable orders from her captain's chair? Definitely.
#anghraine babbles#genderbending#deep blogging#long post#fic talk#fic talk: the lesbian spock agenda#otp: the premise#jessica kirk#s'paak#gender blogging#star peace#i feel like jessica unironically loves the uniform and s'paak finds it deeply impractical for both of their positions#also the aesthetic is vaguely romulan and she doesn't care for that at all. except on kirk specifically for mysterious reasons#a mystery requiring further study obviously. lots of further study.
