Hi, english is not my first language so if I don't make any sense you know why. I'm sorry if i gave you the wrong impression with my ask.I've never read the book so "the shape" of these characters for me personally comes from the movie where Richie is gay. I've recently found out that people that read the book consider him bi. That's why when i read a fic where it's not explicitly stated i always wonder. I saw that you have a tumblr so i was like why not ask.

Hi nonny! Thank you for coming back to clarify, I’m sorry for the defensive tone of my response. Thank you very much for reading my stuff. Nothing about the phrasing of your question was what made me respond that way, just the topic, because I know it’s a hot button issue in fandom at the moment. Nobody wants to be responsible for erasing a sexual minority or a canonical sexual identity--and while in the book Richie’s sexuality is only coded, I’ve been told that André Muschietti explicitly stated that the film portrayal of Richie is gay. So of course, I think that film!Richie is portrayed as gay, and if I were to write Richie based on the film alone, I most likely would write him as gay.

The thing is, I don’t really write exclusively film!Richie. I think that there’s a very rich vein of characterization to be found in the book, which is of course door-stoppingly long, and compared to the limited amount of screentime the movies could spend on each of the Losers, not to mention the changes to their backgrounds the films made (looking at you, tween!Ben who suddenly morphs into adult!Mike), I like to pull from the greatest evidence pool available. That’s why I like to include the teenage werewolf, I like to include Stan’s bird book of North America, I like to include Eddie’s fascination with cars and trains and other mechanical transportation, I like to include Bev’s mother as having been alive during Bev’s childhood, I like to include Ben’s outrunning the track team out of spite, I like to include Bill’s uncanny charisma and his compelling nature, and I like to include Mike with a kinder more curious childhood than he’s allowed in the film. Also, I studied literature in college and I’m just more comfortable with analyzing that than I am analyzing film.

I also really liked the film casting for the adult Losers! It’s very shallow of me but I like how they look, I think they’re all very attractive, and I’m more interested in writing with their physicalities in mind than I am in, say, the actors for the 1990s miniseries. This is a personal preference, just because I myself do not enjoy Bill’s ponytail or Richie’s mustache or Bev as a brunette. I’ve also only ever seen clips of the miniseries. And honestly, I like Bill Hader as Richie in glasses, despite book!Richie wanting to wear contacts as an adult; I find without glasses I have difficulty perceiving him as the character. So I can’t claim to be a book purist--I like writing about the 2016 setting and those are mostly the faces of the Losers I see in my head. I tweak them sometimes--I don’t think I’ve written Richie with blue eyes yet, for example.

So I blend the canons when I decide what to draw on for the fic. That means that, for me, unless it’s explicitly stated, I probably don’t have an intention one way or the other when I write Richie’s sexuality. So far I’ve always written him as a man who loves men, and always as involved and in love with Eddie. I know that for some people that won’t be good enough, that for some people it’s very important to them to see their characters explicitly identify as one label or the other, but I’m afraid that just isn’t a priority for me in my portrayals.

This is informed by 2 things: 1) I like to write the Losers as 40-year-old adults in 2016, and we know that Richie produces a host of problematic content in his career. This of course shouldn’t mean that my portrayal of Richie /should/ be problematic and that’s not my intention--instead, I’m suggesting that when I write Richie, I write a lot about self-loathing and internalized homophobia, and so I focus a lot more on his attraction to men, which in my fic he’s usually not comfortable with, than any potential/past attraction to women. Of course I don’t feel that self-loathing is the necessary response to same-sex attraction, but I also think of the Losers as adults of a certain age who might not always be accurate or thoughtful in discussing the changing world of sexual identities (finding words for them specifically, filling the lexical gap).

I wrote a scene in Things That Happen After Eddie Lives where Richie runs across a gender non-conforming person and initially reads them as female, but then during the conversation remembers that isn’t always the case these days and switch to trying to avoid pronouns for them or trying to refer to them with gender neutral pronouns. But Richie and Eddie still call Jordan and Sarah lesbians, without asking whether they’re a romantic pairing of two bisexual people, or without considering that Jordan might be a man. Richie even wonders if “girlfriend” is being used romantically or platonically the way that women of previous generations do. I have a bead on Jordan’s and Sarah’s identity--but only because Jordan’s me! I think that, as a man born in 1976, growing up extremely closeted, and never engaging in the wider discussion around LGBTQ culture in a constructive way, Richie might be prone to simplification. This, of course, doesn’t mean I’m opposed to a Richie who openly identifies as strictly gay or strictly bi!

2) The second thing that informs the ambiguity of my portrayal of Richie’s sexuality is my own experience with my sexuality and gender. I am closeted in real life. In recent years I have tried a number of identities that, at the time, I believed to fit, but the labels were never clear-cut for me. I am coming to accept, slowly, that in the same way the physical body doesn’t grow to exact neat clean specifications, I might never be able to describe myself accurately and totally in one term. That’s all that I’m willing to share about my experience at this time. My personal philosophy is much like the one Eddie professes when he comes out in Indelicate: it doesn’t seem important to me that people know my preferences unless I’m a) sleeping with them or b) actively dating and trying to put myself out there.

Again, some people have completely different experiences! For some people being closeted is intolerable and having an identity--a word for what they are--really helps them self-actualize and live their truth! For some people, they’re very excited about their identity and participate in Pride events and take joy in asserting that this is who they are to the world! For some people, they never have the awareness that this or that idle feeling might mean they actually /don’t/ fit with how the world sees them. And while I’m a great advocate of self-exploration (comes of being vain as I am), some people don’t do that, and that’s fine!

I know that ambiguity is not a neutral answer when it comes to these questions. In the summer of 2019 when the Good Omens miniseries was released, many fans reached out to author Neil Gaiman asking for confirmation that the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley were gay. Gaiman said, “Theirs is a love story.” He said, “They’re not human and I can’t ascribe human sexual identity to them.” He said, “My coauthor is deceased and I can’t make such confirmations without him.” (These are not direct quotes and I don’t have sources, I’m sorry, it’s been a year.) This was not satisfactory to all parties. For some people explicit confirmation of that gender identity is important. And why shouldn’t it be? Their own is important to them.

But I’m from a school of literary analysis where I welcome different interpretations of my works, which are in this case of course derivative and dependent on evidence from the canons I draw on. I write Richie in love with Eddie, and that’s enough for me. If it’s not for the reader, either I feel there’s ample room to interpret my Richie the way they prefer--not just limited to gay or bi! After the first sex scene in TTHAEL Richie is stunned by how he enjoyed that far more than any other sexual encounter he’s ever had, and I think that’s welcome to interpretations of Richie with demisexuality /or/ Richie just finally having fulfilling sex with a man because he’s gay or bi /OR/ Richie has had good sex before but this was just WAY better because he likes sex better when he’s in love with his partner. And every portrayal of Richie I write is slightly different, so Richie from Indelicate might have different sexual attraction/orientation than Richie from Automatic - Mechanical - Pneumatic or Richie from TTHAEL. BUT I don’t want to say that my interpretation is the only valid one--just know that when I write Richie, I write him as a man in love with another man. If I were to write a story about Richie involved with someone other than Eddie, I would tag for it up front.

Again, I know this is a very long answer and probably not as concise or clear as you might like it to be. Thank you so much for coming back around to explain your logic, I apologize for my wariness the first time around, thank you for asking these questions in good faith. “Why not ask” is of course the simplest way to settle an issue and I don’t want to discourage anyone from asking me questions about my fic. Storm of Ice pt 2 “Family Ties”

So, I am going to be doing a bit of a mini-series on Krill’s adventures on earth, and this is part 2 to the beginning story. If you are here without reading that story you should probably read that one first. Usually I don’t do it this way, but today I will be.

I finally decided to Give Captain Vir a first name, so that will be included in this story.

In the next few days I will be looking for suggestions on what to do while Krill is on earth, so please message me and comment if your ideas. You are much more likely to read what you want to read if you suggest an idea :)

He was trapped on a death world

He was trapped on a death world and the old human was staring at him.

He had never met an old human face to face before. He had seen them from a distance or seen them in pictures, but he had never actually met one before…… he was beginning to think that was a good thing. Captain Vir’s sire was tall and well-muscled with steel grey hair and matching eyes. His hands were thickly calloused and bent from years of work, and that expression of his could have melted iron.

The man tapped his fingers on the tabletop keeping Krill locked in his gaze.

“Where did you say you were from?” The man demanded as the storm raged outside snow and ice pounding against the house’s siding threatening to rip the house from its foundation and throw it into the sky.

He was trapped on a death world with its death species.

He stammered out a response, and instead of appearing pleased, the human’s eyes narrowed further, “And what is it you do on my son’s ship?”

More stammering.

“A surgeon. And where did you learn, what makes you qualified to treat humans.”

Captain Vir came to his rescue then placing a hand on his father’s shoulder, “Dad, give him a break. He’s one of the most experienced, and best members of my crew. I have and will trust him with my life….” He paused, “Don’t tell mom, but he was the one who performed the surgery when I…. you know lost my eye.”

The man leaned back in his chair arms crossed, “Fine.”

In comparison to her mate, the human female was almost opposite in her personality, and it didn’t really seem to matter what Captain Vir did or did not say. Not a few minutes after they had gotten inside, she sat him down aggressively crooning over his missing eye.

“My poor boy….. why do you have to be so reckless. I told your father that you joining the army was a bad idea. And now here you are, missing your leg AND your eye.” She hugged him to her chest as he squirmed, “I have half a mind to call someone about this.”

“Agh…. Mom, I’m fine, really.”

Krill looked on in uncomfortable interest shifting at the glower the old human shot at him, but interested in the protective and smothering aggression the female human was showing. As far as he understood Captain Vir was not a child, so there was really no reason for her to be acting like this. He was just now beginning to realize he knew absolutely nothing about human social structures.

He was about to get an even bigger shock when a booming voice roared from the top of the stairs followed by a chorus of three other voices.

“BABY BROTHER!”

Krill looked up just in time to see the three large, human men charged down the stairs to tackle his friend.

The three of them went to the ground hard, and Krill squealed ducking under the table as the three of them began to struggle yelling and squirming.

“HOLD HIM STILL!” One of them yelled

“HE WON’T STOP SQUIRMING!”

“GOT IT!”

And just like that, the three humans rolled away leaping to their feet, one of them triumphantly holding his bionic leg aloft.

Vir stumbled, with difficulty to his foot, “Come on guys give it back.” He lurched towards the brother with the leg, but the man tossed it to the shorter brother.

“Sorry, I don’t have it, Jeremy does.”

Vir turned holding out his hand. The leg was tossed over his head to the third human.

Vir sighed, “You know, I need that to walk.”

“Oh come on, stumpy, it’s much more fun to watch you hop.”

Krill watched from the safety of the table as the gang of humans continued their game of keep-away. The sudden change in dynamic had him in a tailspin. He was just so used to the captain in charge of everything, and here he was helpless against a gang of three humans in his own home. Was it normal for human families to aggressively tease a disabled sibling? It seemed sort of barbaric to Krill.

Vir lunged for one of his brothers, but caught his foot on the outstretched foot of another and came down hard.

His brothers laughed, “DAVID JOSUPH VIR, give him his leg back this instant.” Krill looked over to find the female human marching over to swipe the leg from the tallest human, “Honestly, he’s your brother and you three act like a couple of wild animals. It must have been hard enough for him to lose his leg much less have his own brothers teasing him so.”

She handed the leg back to Vir planting a kiss on the top of his head, “There you go.”

With a sigh and a grumble he accepted the leg, “Thanks.”

Behind her back the other two boys were making kissy faces. One whispering, “Here comes mommy to the rescue of her little boy.”

“Don’t sass me Thomas.” The woman said turning to glower at the two.

Krill looked on in confusion. He had sort of assumed that the old human would be the Alpha in the human pack, but no, the female seemed to have the greatest amount of pull. At her scolding the three boys had wilted and began shuffling their feet heads down. The alpha female nodded smugly and turned back to her work bustling away leaving the four brothers to glare at each other. Vir had reattached his leg and was watching the oldest brother, a sudden grin split his face and that was the only warning as the man leaped from his sitting position tackling his brother to the floor quickly dominating him one on one and with all his limbs attached.

Krill was forced to duck under the table once more as the wrestling turned to knocking over chairs with flailing feet and fists.

The wrestling grew so violent that they nearly toppled a shelf holding a couple of picture frames.

“ADAM, JEREMY, I swear to the dear LORD, that if you two break my pictures, I will put you over my knee!”

As the two pulled away from each other climbing back to their feet, Krill emerged from under the table. Interesting, it seemed if you were going to discipline a human you had to call them by their full name…. they appeared to have three. A new development since he had always just assumed the captain’s name was Vir.

It seemed that was actually a family name.

“GAH the HELL is that!”

Krill nearly tripped over himself as the three humans surrounded him eyes wide with curiosity poking and prodding at him. He squealed and tried to hide under the table again, but they wouldn’t let him.

“Where do you think you’re going?” The shortest human asked bending down to examine his antennae.

Thank goodness Captain Vir came to his rescue stepping in between him and the three humans, “Hey, go easy, he isn’t used to humans. And he especially isn’t used to your ugly mugs.”

One of the humans peered over his shoulder, “He? Can it talk?”

“Of course he can talk jackass.”

“ADAM! Don’t make your father get the soap.”

Captain Vir cleared his throat, “Uh sorry, mom.”

Krill quickly hid behind Vir’s leg staring up at the three curious, and intimidating humans. He waved an arm, “Hi…”

The human’s eyes widened and they stepped back before rushing back in again with exclamations of wonder.

Turned out the captain had only brought him here because the crew was due for some leave, and he hadn’t wanted to leave Krill alone on a human colony. Krill honestly wasn’t sure how he felt about all of this. The weather made it pretty clear why everyone called it a death planet. If he were to step outside he would die within minutes, though the humans seemed far less worried. A few of them even admitted to enjoying the weather…. Crazy

Still it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about the human social structure.

From wat he had learned, humans were usually born only one at a time with years between them. The oldest tended to claim seniority over the younger though all of the brothers complained that the youngest received special treatment by the mother.

The mother was the human female that seemed to the alpha of the household, she took care of most everything including the making and preparing of food. She had power over the male alpha who only really stepped in when his offspring were out of line. Additionally he doted on the human female and was often sent out to perform tasks in the cold. He was responsible for discipline when one of the offspring did something that the human female really did not like.

All of the offspring were old enough to be out of the house, but they had returned to their den for a “Holiday” And to see their younger brother who rarely had time to make it home when everyone else did. They had a sister too, but she was married with a toddler and another on the way, so she would only be able to visit once.

They all seemed very interested in krill, where he came from, what he did, and how he did it. They very much scared him. These humans had never been off-world and so were not used to interacting with species that weren’t used to humans. Compared to Captain vir, they were aggressive, emotional, and quite volatile. Captain Vir constantly had to remind them that humans were considered dangerous toth rest of the universe, and that it might be best for them to tone themselves down.

They had trouble with that.

Turns out the blizzard outside wasn’t even that intense for this time of year, and they expected a worse one within the week.

Krill very much felt that he was about to die, or that he would die on this visit.

If it wasn’t from exposure to the elements than it would definitely be exposure to the untamed humans.

The mother was very nice, upon asking him what he ate and him responding with photosynthesis, she had ordered one of her children to bring a specific type of lamp up from the basement. It was sweet in the way that humans are, or the way that this human was. She was aggressively worried about his health, wellbeing and needs, and made sure that her boys didn’t bother him too much. He found himself hiding behind her legs…. A lot.

He was about 95% sure he was going to die here.

A Quick Analysis On Belphegor

Alright time to go over my many screenshots and analyze what they gave us of Belphie’s character in the last two chapters. Not beating around any bushes. Shit is long. Like. “ I threw this into docs to check and it came out to 4 pages ” long.

His Attention

First of all——— !! I’d just like to point out how RIGHT I was in saying that he’s super attentive of those he chooses to care about. Whenever they’re talking about his bros nothing seems like a surprise to him unless it’s a TOTAL change of who they were before as with Satan’s relationship with Lucifer. But when it comes to Levi he basically says, “ Knowing him, he was thinking this wasn’t he? That’s just how he is. ” Or when choosing an outfit with Asmo he says exactly, “ As if Asmo would ever be satisfied with an outfit like that. It’s not nearly bombastic enough for him. ” And shortly after, even ASMO says that he pays a lot of attention to the MC if you choose ‘ I owe it all to Belphie ’. ( I didn’t try the other option so idk if he says this regardless ). He pays attention and OTHERS pick up on it.

While it can be excused because they’ve lived so long together, I’d like to say that there are still plenty of things you can NEVER catch onto even if you know someone for a lifetime. There’s also people like me who, while I love my friends so much, don’t always pick up on things. Some are just better than others and I feel like that MORE accurately applies to the brothers. They notice things sure, but not EVERYTHING like Belphie probably does. And there’s a plethora of things they can be familiar with only because it’s been a constant or a habit.

It’s also worth pointing out that even despite being locked up in the attic for who knows how long, Bel still knew his brothers incredibly well and that attention to detail didn’t falter.

His Imprisonment

I also want to take a moment and mention how the way Belphegor talks about being kept in the attic seems to imply that he’s been kept there for QUITE a while. The exchange program is supposed to last a year and we’re given no real timeline to keep track of things. Even if we sum it up to roughly a couple months, he speaks as if it’s been much longer— and when you take a moment you realize it actually HAS been. When he got into his fight with Lucifer, that was before the program even began. It might not have even been in the planning stages ! The proposal could’ve simply been thrown out there and then after gaining support it underwent all the preparations. How long could THAT itself have taken ??

Even when you first meet him in the attic and have the option of asking how long he’s been there, he ANGRILY responds with, “ That’s a good question. How long has it been now, I wonder ? Well, one thing I can say for sure: I’ve been in here for a very, very long time. ” So yeah. Seems reasonable to say it’s been at the very least a year already.

Belphie doesn’t seem like the dramatic type or one to necessarily over-exaggerate. He refers to himself as having been a PRISONER and I don’t count that as exaggeration either because he really WAS a prisoner in his own home and the effects of it are quite evident. He addresses it a couple times and one of his lines on the home screen refers to Levi. And it actually seems to counter a home screen line of Levi’s that says they’re more ALIKE when you think about it. ( Which they kind of are and I’ll get into a little of that later ). But it basically says that they’re different because Levi CHOOSES to be a recluse while he had no choice in being imprisoned and he legitimately says that in the regard, “ Levi has nothing on me. ”

While the game has them make up in these chapters, I don’t believe Lucifer’s simple apology is really enough to make up for the damage. As I said, it REALLY affected Bel and extended for quite a while. Bel missed out on a LOT and is deeply saddened by it. He regrets not being involved even if he couldn’t help it. This is the same brother who already struggled with loneliness and is now a stranger to everything that happened for the last 1+ year. I think it’s more accurate to say that he accepted the apology but hasn’t TRULY forgiven him yet. And for the moment could be swept under the rug while he personally works on getting over it.

His Effort

I have enjoyed the game immensely in showing us what Belphegor is capable of. When they work part-time in Hell’s Kitchen that SINGULAR time, it’s emphasized that the restaurant works its employees tirelessly. Despite this, he still held his own and was the only one not actually tired in the end. He’s even the one who made sure everything was flowing smoothly, properly, and implied to have HOUNDED Mammon and MC in doing so. This seems to suggest that Belphie actually has an incredible reserve of energy to tap into when he so chooses. A reserve that’s built up from all of the sleeping he does.

In other words, although he’s the sin of Sloth and is INDEED a sleepy boy, there’s plenty of opportunity for him to apply himself. It’s just a matter of wanting to— and he usually doesn’t want to. Hence he chooses to SLEEP instead and immerse himself in his very attribute.

However, the game also shows us that he’s pretty well-rounded and can also be deeply involved or helpful when it comes to his brothers and THEIR own interests.

i.e. he and Satan bond over their dislike of Lucifer and orchestrate pranks against him, he enjoys video games and manga alongside Levi DESPITE not wanting to let him know, and he has a great sense of fashion to the point he knows what would better / best suit Asmo

And I really ADORE this about him because it continues to build him up as more than just the ‘ cat-napping seventh born ’ and actually gives him a place among his brothers as the one that can easily and probably best navigate among them ALL.

His Personality

Sadly, despite being able to fit in with any one of his brothers, it seems like apart from Beelzebub, the street doesn’t run BOTH ways. Yes, everyone makes up. But this doesn’t exactly change how things will actually be from that point on and it definitely doesn’t change the past. Levi himself remarks how Belphie has ALWAYS been difficult to approach even at the best of times. It’s noted that they’re both the socially awkward brothers and Bel doesn’t enjoy large gathering atmospheres and prefers to be alone than attend them. Compared to Levi who can at least FORCE himself to bear with it, he takes the first opportunity to find a space for himself away from it all. From this we know he’s good in small to medium sized groups but beyond that is overwhelming for him. WAY past his comfort zone.

Additionally, we also now know just how disconnected from everyone he is if they always had difficulty going to him. This make you wonder if the strangeness and distance they treated him with in these chapters hasn’t actually happened a NUMBER of times thereby explaining why he was so unfazed by it all when it shouldn’t have been okay. I don’t believe he’s completely unaffected so much as he’s just USED TO the occasional cold shoulder.

These brothers are the Avatars of Sin and clearly not immune to the very things they cause. In fact, I would almost go to say that they feel it to an EXTREME and merely have varying degrees of a handle on it. That is to say that Belphie potentially has a seriously hard time given the vastness of Sloth and just covers it decently well. ( See here or his bio for some insight. ) And the greatest sadness to this is how the brothers are all fully AWARE of things that aren’t typically okay. They’re aware of their own familial issues and just CHOOSE to not aid or ignore it. Excuse it if you will with ‘ they’re demons, they lack morals ’. This is their family that they claim to care deeply about and have to live with for several millennia and you’re gonna just not make it better ? Shame on them. And for added note—— this isn’t just how I feel about in regards to Belphie but OTHERS as well such as Mammon.

Continuing on though, because this isn’t about that. It’s relieving that Belphegor still has so much personality beyond his hang ups. He looks at everyone for who THEY are as seen by how he is the first and only one so far to tell the MC he’s there for them and NOT because of their connection to Lilith. At the same time he’s an incredibly bratty boy in his texts. It’s almost like in story he behaves one way and in text it’s another. Like he’s carrying out a specific appearance in public and DMs are him NO holds barred. ( Which we know he’s aware and likely capable of picking out images to portray through outfit deciding with Asmo ). He can have an attitude and has no fear saying what he REALLY thinks / feels and especially doesn’t like anything that even remotely gives the assumption that someone views him as a child.

He gets bored easily and can’t stand it, is most likely an insomniac due to feeling more awake the later it gets, and is ALWAYS looking out for Beel via combination of being so close to him and having a special twin connection. Nonetheless, it’s enough to assume that he’s highly considerate of the others as well and that Beel is just priority.

Just A Memory

(This is a compiled roleplay between my Beast Boy muse and the Raven muse of @azarathian . This is a very old roleplay we wrote under different usernames, but I labeled our writing with our current usernames.)

titansandothers (Beast Boy): Seeing Beast Boy cleaning his room was definitely a rare sight. When he lost the comic book he was reading mid way through, however, he didn’t have much choice. Where was it? Where was it? He lifted stuff up and moved it from place to place, tidying up in the process. During his search, he came across something he hadn’t seen in a while; a certain heart shaped box once intended for Terra. He sighed, looking at the box, unable to stop the thoughts going through his mind. After some thinking, he put the box back where he found it and exited his room. Moments later, he gave a few light knocks to Raven’s door. Usually, the green teen would keep his thoughts to himself, but after what Raven told him that night he couldn’t keep his feelings bottled up anymore, he thought it better to talk to someone. She’d proved to be a good listener previously and given what he had to say, he figured she’d understand the most. After all, Raven had always trusted Terra the least. “Raven, do you have a minute?” His voice didn’t carry its usual jovial tone. azarathian (Raven): An array of binders lay strewn in front of her, with various sheets peeking out here and there, color-coded and each adorning masses of print. When Robin had asked her to alphabetically organize and categorize the most recent case files they’d produced, she was less than eager. Still, such tedious tasks came with the upkeep of management, regulation and structure within their profession. Someone had to do it, and a part of her reasoned that she’d probably not been the only one laden by her leader with chores. She pressed two fingers against her temple, concentration straying as she surveyed the papers. And so when a knock resounded through her room to break the endeavor, she welcomed it with open arms. Anything to distract from this. Swiftly, she paced to her door to be met with Beast Boy. Mind still slightly befuddled from her toil, she didn’t instantly pick up on his disheartened manner, merely relieved to have someone interrupt her work. “Sure,” she said, allowing the errand to fade to the back of her mind. There was a pause, and it was then that she noticed the lack of life in his face. Her expression changed to one of awareness. “Um, did you wanna come in?” titansandothers (Beast Boy): He gave her a quiet nod and, upon her stepping aside, he entered her room. It was rare that anyone was welcomed into her room, especially himself. It was rather strange to be able to see her room without worrying about being caught. His gaze wandered around her room a bit before settling back on the resident of said room. “I was wondering if I could talk to you again.” He said, ears down in caution. “I’ve been thinking about… stuff… and I thought you’d be the best person to talk to about it.” His eyes flickered back and forth between her eyes and anything else in the room. He felt guilty for what he was feeling and was having difficulty maintaining eye contact. azarathian (Raven): Undoubtedly, before the night they’d shared talking on the roof, Raven wouldn’t have invited him in. But then, before that time, it was likely Beast Boy wouldn’t have even found himself at her door, seeking her solace to begin with. It was like a certain threshold had been passed. The exchange had been over two weeks ago now, but was just as vivid in her head as if it had been yesterday. Once more, though she tried not to jump to conclusions, she felt that same concern for the changeling returning. His voice was weak, as if he was unsure of what to say. His demeanor merely emphasized this. And for a minute, Raven was surprised he was willing to share his vulnerable state with her a second time. “Of course.” Her voice came softly. Attentive. She walked over to her bed and swiftly gathered up the mess of files into one pile, then placed them down on the closest desk. Gently, she sat upon her bed - a welcome for him to do the same. “What have you been thinking about?” she asked, crossing her legs. titansandothers (Beast Boy): He walked over to her bed and, a bit hesitantly, sat down as well. Looking straight ahead, he took a deep breath and let it out. “Terra…” This would be the first time he really talked to someone about his feelings regarding Terra. He’d kept them to himself after she abandoned the team, after she was turned to stone, and after he found her again. “I used to think she was the greatest thing on Earth. She was pretty, fun, daring, and she laughed at my jokes. She made me feel amazing, like I wasn’t just a goof. Even after everything that happened, leaving the team, betraying us, and abandoning us for her new life, I couldn’t bring myself to ever think her anything less than perfect.” One might notice the use of past tense here. There was a reason for that. “But that’s been changing. Is that bad?” He turned to look at her. “I know she ultimately gave her own life to save us all, but does that just erase everything she’d done before that? And after? Don’t get me wrong, I forgive her. It’s just that… I think I was putting her too high on a pedestal…” azarathian (Raven): “Terra…” At the name, her chest grew tight. It wasn’t that Raven still resented the girl they’d once known; over the years, with the blonde’s constant absence, it was only natural for such sore feelings she’d harbored to slowly slip away with the passing of time. Raven wasn’t one to live in the past, after all. For a while now, her view on the girl had been nothing more than neutral. What had happened, happened, and for the present, Terra was no longer a part of their lives. It had been a long time since she’d even crossed Raven’s mind. However, she could understand why the same couldn’t be said for the changeling sitting before her. It was odd, that he’d choose to seek her out for advice regarding his lost love. Whilst he spoke, though she listened intently, a part of her wandered past the conversation… Why is he telling me this? she asked herself. It was no secret that of all the titans, Raven had been the most wary of Terra; the one who clashed with her the most. Raven had her own history with Terra, and it was nothing like Beast Boy’s. So why?… Her eyes met his, searching inside their beryl glint. “… That’s what people do when they feel for someone the way you felt for her. And for the time you feel it, it’s like they can do no wrong.” A pause. “But Terra was only ever a person, just like any other person.” She hoped she was saying the right thing; it was difficult to know what he needed to hear in that moment. And so she just tried to be as truthful on the matter as she could be. “The fact you can recognize that even those we value most can hurt us isn’t a bad thing. It means you’re… moving on.” titansandothers (Beast Boy): Moving on… he thought to himself. He supposed that was a good thing. Move on and grow up. Considering his maturity compared to the rest of the team, he really needed to do that, he thought. He gave her a nod. “I’ll do it. It’s time I grew up… How do you know all this?” Then it hit him. “…Malchior…” He answered his own question as he looked down. He gave her a slight smile. “Man… you moved on a lot faster than I did.” He looked ahead. “I never saw you happier than when you were with him. And yet, you just let him go. That took guts.” He looked back at her with a smile. “I could learn a thing or two from you.” He nudged her playfully. “You badass.”

He tried to stay positive, despite the seriousness of the conversation. He was worried that, even though she’d moved on, being reminded of Malchior hurt her, just like being reminded of Terra hurt him. azarathian (Raven): She never thought she’d hear Beast Boy acknowledge that it was time he grew up, and yet there he was, facing the situation head-on despite his turmoil and absorbing her words with maturity as opposed to denial. If anything, she was impressed. Proud of him, in fact. Even when that familiar name filled the space between them, she swallowed and retained her calm. Her experience with the wizard was something she couldn’t erase from her memories, even years after. In some ways, she didn’t want to. For it had taught her the importance of trust in another, molded her into who she was today. The once dire pain for her loss had wilted to a mere dull ache a long, long time ago. She wouldn’t allow the reminder to stir such hurt in her again for even a second. Some memories just aren’t worth it.

“Not really,” she assured. The titans had never seen how, following the event, she had allowed tears to fall down her cheeks in the seclusion of her room. It had never been a case of quick recovery, despite what she chose to reveal on the outside. “It took time. These things do. But… that’s okay.” Her gaze wandered down to her hands in her lap. “Some people are meant to come into our lives, but aren’t meant to stay. That’s just how it is. We have to accept that, even if it hurts for a while…” titansandothers (Beast Boy): He frowned. “Oh…” He honestly thought she had gotten over it quickly. Thinking about it though, he could believe it. Given all the time she spent in her room, it was hard to tell when she was sulking. He followed her gaze to her hands and decided to take a risk. He placed one gloved hand on hers. “But some people come into our lives and will be there forever. Like me.” He gave her a wide toothy grin.

“I hope I don’t bug you as much as I used to, because I’m not going anywhere.” Just as he told her all those years ago, he was once again letting her know that she’s not alone. azarathian (Raven): Funny how the boy who’d been seeking reassurance was offering the girl before him just that. The fact he could come to her feeling troubled only to turn the tables and put another before himself spoke volumes of his caring nature. It was something about him that had never gone unnoticed by the empath; and something, she believed, to be one of his greatest traits. So when he looked to her, smiling and positive, it wasn’t the cause for the abrupt ripple through her chest, but the palm she felt placed atop her own unsuspecting hand. Her sights flitted down to glance the motion, before finding the earnest hold of his own once more. “Lucky me,” came that signature drawl, though this time accompanied with a faint and tender smile. The contact felt all too distinct, like a lingering rarity which she had to disturb. On impulse, her hand lifted from beneath his own to randomly tuck a tress of hair behind her ear that honestly could’ve been left untouched. titansandothers (Beast Boy): Even with the snark, he continued to smile. Sarcasm meant she was okay and that’s all that mattered to him right now. Funny how he was feeling like dirt a mere matter of minutes ago and now, he was smiling. Helping other people feel better always seemed to cheer him up. He couldn’t blame her for moving her hand. Physical contact wasn’t really her thing. Taking the hint, he returned his hand to his lap. He looked ahead, took a breath, and let it out, thinking. “I think there’s one thing I have left to do before I can say I’ve officially moved on. It sucks though, having to let go of her. She was the only girl to ever like me back. I guess you must have felt the same way back then.” He looked back at her.

“Do you think we have a chance at love?”

Though he hadn’t realized it yet, his question could be misinterpreted. He meant to ask if she thought they’d both be able to find their own love interests, but it wasn’t worded quite right. azarathian (Raven): Both brows rose. He was planning to do something specific to finally relinquish his feelings? His suffering, after all this time? She couldn’t help but succumb to curiosity as to what the boy had in mind; however, at that time, she wasn’t certain it was her place or her business to pry. Still… she found her lips parting a touch, leaning forward as she considered inquiring his intentions. “Do you think we have a chance at love?” Like a backfire, she reclined at once, stretching the space between them with incredulous eyes. Her head was suddenly swarmed with fog, thoughts a total blank as she watched the boy opposite.

“… What?” titansandothers (Beast Boy):

“What what?” He was thoroughly confused. Why’d she think it odd of him to ask if they had a chance at finding love for themselves? Unless she thought he meant…

“Ack! No, dude, wait! That’s not what I meant! I meant to ask if we could find love! I mean, if we could find our own love! I mean, if we could find our own loves that aren’t each other! Like you found someone and I found someone!” He panicked, arms flailing. azarathian (Raven): “I know that!” she barked, a crimson hue swamping her otherwise fair complexion. It was a lie, of course, but there was no chance of admittance. He just had to go and say something stupid. All essence of the conversation seemed instantly reduced to the blatant flush upon the pair’s cheeks. Flustered, she sought desperately for a diversion. A clumsy cough escaped her, eyes glued to the duvet beneath her, which had become suddenly very intriguing. Then a sigh, shallow and stiff. “Look,” she began. “I think you’re doing the right thing.” To revert back to their earlier topic was her only rescue from the imminent discomfort. She wasn’t even going to touch on the question that had caused the flurry of panic. “You can’t cling to her memory forever. Sometimes, closure is key. Do what you need to do, and you can finally just…” She searched for the words. “Live again.” Hesitantly, her gaze shifted back to the other. titansandothers (Beast Boy): Well, that was awkward. He looked down and drummed his fingers on his knees to avoid eye contact. The red started to leave his face with the subject change and he looked back up. “Yeah. I’ve been holding on because the memories are all I have, but I think it’s doing more harm than good.” He stood up. “Thanks for talking to me again, but I have to go now. I have a memory to toss and I need to stop putting it off.” azarathian (Raven): Her gaze clung to him as he rose from the bed, body shifting to follow his figure pacing across the room to the door. “What are you going to do?” she asked, unable to resist. Internally, Raven chided herself for interfering with his personal affairs, but after sharing with her the source of his grief, she hoped maybe he wouldn’t mind her asking. When it came to Terra, she wanted to make sure he wasn’t going to do something puerile. titansandothers (Beast Boy): He turned a bit to look at her. “Throw away a memory.” He said simply, making a gesture indicating she could follow him. He made his way to his room and got on the floor to dig under his bed. Upon pulling out a heart shaped box, he stood up and showed it to her. “I never told anyone about this, but, when Terra returned to the team, I made her this. I gave it to her just before asking her out. I’ve kept it ever since she left to remind me of her and our first date, but it’s time to let it go.” azarathian (Raven): Accepting the signal, she followed the boy to the room next door and waited patiently whilst he rummaged for the box. When presented to her, she caught their reflections held in the heart of glass like a portrait. Violet eyes perused its design with a sense of admiration; she’d never known him to be the craftsman type - he seemed far too clumsy - and yet he’d created something as delicate and refined as the item in his hands. It was difficult for the magus to comprehend. The box was a token of beauty - and yet, the source of its inspiration was now no more than a memoir of his past. For him to still own such a thing of significance must’ve been torture for the heart. It seemed only right for him to surrender it. How else could he ever let go? She stepped towards him, a consoling hand against his shoulder.

“Proud of you,” she said. With a final nod, Raven released her hold and wandered back to the open door. She halted in place to turn and give him one last look of encouragement, before taking her leave. It was something he needed to do alone. And the sooner she left him to do so, the better. titansandothers (Beast Boy): It wasn’t often he was told that he’d made someone proud. Kiss and Cry Reloaded Podcast 4

The Kiss&Cry Reloaded Podcast has released their fourth episode. Massimiliano Ambesi, Angelo Dolfini, and Francesco Paone talk about Alena Kostornaia in depth! Translated by madmax, minimally edited by @birdie02.

[Paone] In the last few days we received many questions about the curious story of Alena Kostornaia. How is it possible that this girl, initially considered not so good, an athlete considered hopeless by most, a kind of ugly duckling, has become a swan, acclaimed by all?

Ambesi talks at length about Alena’s career, from its beginnings with Marina Cherkasova, to the transition to the Sambo 70 school, in the department that was headed by Elena Tchaikovskaia, with the coach Elena Zhgun.

He says that the first turning point in her career came after the 2017 junior national championships, when she placed sixteenth, over fifty points under Alina Zagitova. A few days later she competed in an open competition in Moscow and she was eighteenth. She had to retire or try to change something.

[Ambesi] She choose the most difficult way: try to join Khrustalny department, the group of Eteri Tutberidze. Tutberidze has doubts, but decided to have her take a week-long test.

The impact of Kostornaia on Tutberidze was the same that we will see with all the Russian former dance champions: an immediate falling in love with Alena. Tutberidze was not a champion, but she competed in dance and immediately realized that she had never had such a skater in her group. After ten days Tutberidze informed her that she has been accepted.

According to Ambesi, the second turning point was Anna Shcherbakova’s injury, which offered her the chance to compete in the Junior Grand Prix.

He describes the good results in the Junior Grand Prix Final, in the senior national championship (in his opinion she deserved the second place), in the Russian Junior National Championships and in the Junior World Championships, always second behind Trusova.

[Ambesi] Someone started to say: this Kostornaia is good, but she’s not a winner. A few days later was posted on social networks a video in which Alena Kostornaia performs this:

Back inside rocker, forward inside counter, change of edge, triple Axel!

All the experts who saw this element were amazed. Something like that could only be performed by another person, that Japanese skater, that pretty good one (referring to Yuzuru Hanyu).

Alena was preparing the triple axel for the Junior World Championships, when she got injured. She had to stop a month before she could resume training and declared she would abandon the triple Axel.

But Alena is a proud girl. After the Russian test skate she suffered something that she considered an offense, because the experts commented that Kostornaia is good, that she is a beautiful skater, but she has no future. Exactly the things they said about her before she moved to Team Tutberidze. Alena burst out to Daria Pavliuchenko, her best friend, who encouraged her to try again the triple Axel.

This was the third turning point of her career.

After a few days, It was mid-September, Alena returned to Khrustalny and said to Sergei Dudakov that she wanted try the triple Axel again. Sergei proposed to try again with the help of the pole harness. She refused the help: she wanted to try without support. The first attempt went wrong. On the second attempt, she executed the element. She also succeeded in subsequent attempts. At that point they decided to introduce the triple Axel in Finlandia Trophy, at least in the free program.

In the short, she maintained the double Axel. A double Axel that for quality, difficulty of the transition of entry and exit deserves the +5 unanimous.

Sometimes the +5 does not arrive and we all ask ourselves why. Such a thing was done only by Hanyu when he was thirteen. That element is worth +5. There is nothing to discuss. If a judge gives her +3 he/she must stop judging. He has to do something else in life, because he can't tell a single reason why he doesn't give +5. He is unable to explain a reason! He can't judge a competition!

Anyway, she won the Finlandia Trophy.

At that point, the attention of the media and of the former Russian champions moved to the Grenoble GP, on the challenge between Kostornaia and Alina Zagitova. The former single skating athletes, like Maria Butyrskaya, exposed themselves by saying that Zagitova has something more than Kostornaia. The world of dance, Marina Zueva and others, saw that Alena is the strongest.

In Grenoble Alena skated very well in the short program, despite being very tense. All observers expected a big score in that short program, around 85, she also expected it. Alena sat in the kiss & cry, waiting for the score and ... 76 appeared on the video!

They called the triple Axel under rotated, it was very questionable, and the Lutz for unclear edge, which we can agree. The components score was similar to Alexandra Trusova’s in Skate Canada.

Alena’s reaction was like this: it wasn’t worth the effort, it wasn’t worth the risk. In Finland she had scored higher, with a program with the double Axel. She couldn’t understand.

In the first interviews, while the others were still skating, they asked her what she thought of the competition. She didn’t spoke explicitly against the technical panel and the judges. Actually, she was very angry, because she didn’t understand what happened [t/n: Ambesi here uses another, much more colorful terminology: madmax didn’t want to be banned by the moderators].

Once the interviews were over, she went in a corner near the locker room, watching the performances of the skaters in the last group, the best placed ones in the world ranking. One after the other, they fell. Even Zagitova messed up. At the end Alena won the short program.

The disappointment, the anger turned into half contentment. She couldn’t explain what happened and commented tersely that the Junior World Championships was much easier.

In the free she was much more relaxed and performed a double Axel and eight triples, including two triple Axels. She won with 236 points, the second highest score in the world after Alexandra Trusova.

The rest of Alena’s story is all to be written, because we don't know how far this athlete will succeeds. She can win everything, or not, because in figure skating things change quickly.

Her story teaches us that in any case we must always believe in it till the end, if we feel we have something inside. You can turn into the figure skating greatest hope, because those who love figure skating rely so much on the potential of Kostornaia.

It's a bit what happened with Hanyu in the four-year period that began in 2010 and ended with the Sochi Olympics. From 2007 to 2010 it was a quadriennium of technical regression, the darkest four years of men's figure skating, with few noteworthy programs. We were coming from that dark period, then it happened: Yuzuru Hanyu's free program in junior competitions. The figure skating fans said that only Yuzuru could save this sport. Yuzuru and his triple Axel as high as the balustrade. Yuzuru saved men figure skating, bringing it to excellence.

We'll see if Alena, who has many points in common with Yuzuru Hanyu, will be able to do something similar for ladies’ figure skating. Even half of it would be enough and it would already be great.

[Dolfini - 42:12] You have already highlighted the similarities between Kostornaia and Hanyu. The first point of contact is the smoothness, the mastery of the skates, the overall quality of skating. Both athletes jump very well, especially the edge jumps, like Axel and Loop. Hanyu manages to land the quadruple Loop, while for Alena the triple Loop is a strong point.

Alena is one of the few athletes in the history of figure skating who have landed the triple Axel in competition, which has been achieved less than a dozen other women. The Salchow is also a strong point for Alena. We'll see if she can get a quadruple Salchow.

The quality of their skating is highlighted by the quality of the edge jumps.

She has some weaknesses too, like some uncertainty in the toe jumps.

Her jumps are wide, high, with an important flight phase. This does not only depend on a very advantageous weight / power ratio, which is more evident in the case of Trusova, but also on an excellent technique.

Alena has a particular technique, which can be discussed, anyway it allows her to take the jumps at full speed and to have a wide flight phase. Those elements deserve the positive GOEs they receive. Besides the size of the jumps, there is also the quality of the air position and the smoothness of the exits.

Above all, she is one of the most complete athletes.

[Ambesi] Speaking of smoothness, ability to change direction, mastery of the skates, skating skills, which former athlete can be compared to Kostornaia?

[Dolfini] We said about the similiarities with Yuzuru Hanyu. In the female field comes to my mind Shizuka Arakawa. Kostornaia’s skating is reminiscent of these oriental athletes, because it is soft and smooth. She bend her knees very well. She increases the speed with this rhythmic bending. Not just bending. Watch carefully at her skating: bending and extending at the right time.

There is this softness in her rhythmic movement and you can see it very well in that passage you underlined, before the triple Axel: back inside rocker, forward inside counter, change of edge, triple Axel. If you look closely you will see that this step, which in itself is an element of difficulty, for her is even helpful, it gives her an advantage. Because she execute that step with a great rhythm: not only she does not lose speed, she almost increases the speed. This ability is the trademark of the great skaters, who know how to use knee and ankle in an outstanding way.

Regarding the smoothness I could also make a comparison with Carolina Kostner, who however got it in a different way, more based on lightness, on the ability to extend. Mind you, Carolina also bends very well, but the impression she leaves is different, as if she did not weigh on the ice, while Hanyu and Kostornaia seem to being at one with the ice. This is why the first comparison that came to my mind was Arakawa.

[Ambesi] Kostornaia, an honorary citizen of Sendai, then.

[Dolfini] We talked about Alena’s skating from a technical point of view, but we cannot ignore the interpretative quality of such a young girl. This is truly a rare commodity. Her presence on the ice, which we can bring into the performance voice, is something exceptional. It is something very difficult to see, at such a young age. She already have a great personality. The way she uses the upper body movements and the head. The way she communicates with the viewers. These are qualities proper of the most experienced skaters. From this point of view, it makes you say that she is a predestined one.

[Ambesi] Her connection with the spectators is not simply a grimace, a smirk, as for many others. It's another thing.

[Dolfini] No, because it involves the whole body. It involves the arms, the movement of the whole upper body. Of course, she also uses the head and facial expressions. They are important, but the performance doesn't have to be limited to that. As for Sofia Samodurova, for example, who is skilled at using that aspect. Everyone uses their weapons.

Japanese athletes have always had great smoothness, great skating skills, while in interpretation they struggle more.

In the case of Kostornaia we really have the complete package.

[Ambesi] In my opinion, right now Alena Kostornaia is worth nine at least on four of the five components of the program. I have some doubts only on composition, especially in the free program.

I think that proceeding the season, if the technical quality will remain at the same level, she can expect 37 in the short and 73-74 in the free program. If she will be able to go further, she could even become the athlete to beat or almost.

[Dolfini] Yes, because then the others have to risk a lot to stay at her level.

Spyro Reignited Wishes; then Skylanders Academy Predictions (Then More Game Stuff)

I decided to do something really stupid, and try and post about three different things in one post because I guess a really long read is something that nobody has complained about yet. I am sorry in advance for the nightmarish amount of text you will see, and tell me not to do this in the future if you’d prefer one thing at a time. I will probably avoid doing this again in the future. I am sorry in advance, and I tried to mark the transitions from one topic to another heavily so you could just skip to what you want.

1. ———-With the Reignited Trilogy coming closer to being just around the corner; everyone who isn’t an original series Nazi — an original series fan that believes that just porting the original series to the PS4 is the only thing that can be done with this series that isn’t punishable by murder — is really exited to get their hands on the Spyro that predates all other Spyros. With that exitement however, many people have come to hope for and even beg Toys for Bob for any reveals on any of the new features they could’ve added, and hope that the Reignited Trilogy is getting all of the love that the N’Sane, and from what we’ve seen so far; from being in development for over two years longer than the N’Sane Trilogy because it was actually being developed at the same time if not early than the N’Sane Trilogy started to having revamped cutscenes and a reactive development team that gives what the fans ask for through hard work, the Reignited Trilogy seems to be receiving more love than the N’Sane Trilogy.

This love that is being given to the Original Spyro has given many of us a list of things that we may have come to hope for or expect (or hate the idea of if you are an Original Spyro Nazi). My list of wishes are as follows:

•Playable Cynder and/or Ember: First thing, because Crash had an extra playable character added for after the game was beaten, this is then followed by the Original Series having had done this before in later installments, and is made more likely through being probably THE MOST REQUESTED THING OF THE REIGNITED TRILOGY BY FANS OF THE LEGEND SERIES. So yeah, may actually be a thing.

•The addition of deleted content: Crash obtained his stormy ascent, and Spyro likely had many worlds that were removed due to either difficulty or time constraints, and as much as all files on the original series were lost by Insomniac, it’s original developers could definitely tell them about deleted content and abandoned ideas.

•A Crash Easter Egg?: Spyro and Crash were best friends after all, so having him show up in an Easter Egg or level could be pretty fun.

•Keeping the Adaptive Difficulty Algorithms: This one is more so one of my hopes for this Trilogy. The Original Spyro Trilogy was technologically ahead of its time in way more ways than one (outside of being two years late to the 3D Platforminng Genre), one of these wonders of technology that this game boasted was how its enemy AI would actually adapt to how good you were at the game, making it absolutely brutal for the pros of the series, and extremely easy for those who struggled with it more often, so every player would actually witness different levels of difficulty for each boss and enemy.

Even though Crash Bandicoot is difficult to start with and understand the full extent of its physics, all of its characters and bosses followed set paths, and for someone who is experienced at playig Crash Bandicoot, and has memorized the boss-paths; it is actually really easy to do a zero-deaths run of any level, boss, or even the entire game after having had played it before. Each of the Original Trilogy Spyro games would actually become more difficult the better you bacame at the game; requiring a more in-depth knowledge of characters and levels by a long-shot if you plan on beating the game without a single death, each of the enemies starting to react within periods of time that aren’t possible for some random player to just pick up and play against. So as much as people talk about how hard Crash is for them, they’re forgetting that the original Spyro trilogy was only easy for them because they sadly (and bluntly) weren’t probably that exceptional at playing it, and also probably because it does begin at an average difficulty level that was designed for anyone to just be able to play; so a lot of people probably didn’t have the difficulty raise too much for them. But yeah; I want the Reignited trilogy to show off one of its technological marvels that people today probably wouldn’t even try to develop or implement in the greatest of AAA games.

2. —————As one of the many people who enjoyed Skylanders Academy, and really payed way too much to the lore of it and similarities it showed to the stories of other Spyros, I have a few predictions for season three that I can pretty much guarantee and would maybe even be willing to bet money on with the confidence and evidence that I have for these. With the Third season being released a month after the Reignited Trilogy, the fall of 2018 will be the season of Spyro. But keep in mind that I have avoided leaks, so any of this could’ve been leaked or disproven without my knowledge.

•A Bloodlines Episode: As much as that episode will not be called Bloodlines, their will most-definitely be an episode where Malefor and Cynder will be having some father daughter time (in the middle of Cynder being pissed); while Eon reveals the truth about Spyro and his history to the rest of the Skylanders; all while Kaos tries to have some father-son moments with Strykore. This episode will entail why Malefor hates purple dragons so much, and him telling that story to Cynder (which will 100% reveal that Cynder’s mother was a purple dragon; who probably died protecting the core of light from all of the dark-form purple dragons, or became corrupted as well. I can guarantee this because of Cynder’s color, her retaining her dark purple scales even though Malefor never corrupted her with Aether in this series, he’s just a black dragon who cares deeply for his biological daughter; so with him being black; Cynder’s mother would have to be purple. So that is definitely a reveal to look for). Though this reveal of Cynder’s mother will likely then be followed-up by a Dark Spyro visit (just because individual episodes tend to have themes that they stick to, and Spyro is convinced that Malefor knows how to find his family, and will definitely show back up to find out).

Stealth Elf and the other Skylanders will probably end the episode determined to find a way to either bring the purple dragons back so they could save Spyro (knowing how he’ll be looking for them), or they will either abandon Eon and his cause for having had lied, or forgive him and prepare to fight Strykore and Kaos to the bitter end. This may also include Eon revealing his relations to Kaos, but if so then this episode may be the forst or second one of season three.

Kaos will likely fail in trying to have his father spend time with him, and will hold that deep in his heart to be triggered later; pushing him to turn against his father when it is needed of him most; either making him worse than his father was, or and antagonistically-neutral character at the end of season three (which may be the last season)

•Saving Spyro: This one is the more complicated part of predicting season three, and that is because there are several ways in which it could play-out; each with similar or different saviors.

Cynder saves Spyro: The case behind Cynder being the one who saves Spyro can be seen heavily from all of the similarities that their relationship in Skylanders Academy has compared to the relationship that The Legend Trilogy Spyro and Cynder have with each other. But there is a twist in that, in every similarity in this relationship, the roles have been reversed between them. So Spyro’s because you have left me nothing to fight for scene can become Cynder’s; since he was the only thing that really gave her reason to be a Skylander. There is also the fact that she is likely a half-breed purple dragon, meaning that she would actually have light to give/bring to him in his darkness. Making her the most-ideal character to save him if the stick to their legend series references and self-established lore of how light works in their own series. Their is only one other character who could fit this role as well as Cynder could, and that is before considering how Cynder is the only character who has lived on both the sides of bad and good, and she learned and accepted how she could be a Skylander in spite of being groomed to be evil. She of all characters knows that anyone could be saved, and if they really want to sell the reflections of the Legend Series; they would have her stop at nothing to save him, this may force her to face both the Skylanders and Strykore though. Hell; she may even join with Kaos for a time just to try and get close enough to be able to reach Spyro.

Cynder saves Spyro when he visits Malefor: So dark Spyro will eventually visit Malefor in season three if not the other way around. Cynder will be in Malefor’s custody when that happens; meaning that she will definitely play a large role in the endgame. So how this will go will be; Spyro likely gets violent, one way or another it becomes a duel between him and Cynder in which she either loses or refuses to fight, does either the inversion of the Legend series Dark Cynder Spyro fight from DotD, or she uses her light to purify him knowing that she’s a half purple dragon now, or a mixture of both. This will either leave Cynder in a weakened or ill state forcing Spyro to apologize and find some way to bring her to the core of light, or she’ll be fine and the story will continue.

Cynder saves Spyro when he his fighting at the core of light: Similar to the last one, just theyre all at the core of light and Spyro and Cynder end up alone in the battle one way or another, repeat all thr stuff from the last one and bam, Spyro is himself again.

Cynder and Stealth Elf save Spyro at the core of light battle: Since Stealth Elf is Spyro’s best friend in this series, just pair up her value of Spyro and desperation to likely save him with the stuff from earlier revolvin Cynder and you’ll have a saved Spyro with two of the most important if not the two current most important people to him there by his side for him to apologize to and finish the final battle.

Stealth Elf saves Spyro: Stealth Elf is Spyro’s closest friend, so with that being a main theme; Stealth Elf alone is a candidate to save him, not as ideal as Cynder and Eon, but she can. She might use water from the core of light, but otherwise the power of friendship is all I can really say.

Stealth Elf at the core of light: Just read the one before, and You’ll know why this is the only location that Stealth Elf alone will be able to save Spyro, because the core of light is the only place where she can restore his light, her not being one of the three beings that just has pure light within them.

Spyro’s Skylander team saves him: Because of the themes of family within this show, the team that traveled with Spyro throughout Skylanders Academy is really the most expectable group for the show to use for anyone who doesn’t Overdose on researching and studying the lore of series like I do. They are a great candidate provided Skylanders Academy wants to just plot-armor the word “family” over all of the lore and character forshadowing that the developers did throughout the first and second seasons. It will still fit the themes of Skylanders Academy though.

Spyro’s Skylander team saves him at the core of light: This is the only area where the team detailed earlier could save Spyro in a lore-friendly way without the help of Cynder or Eon.

Eon saves Spyro: A lot like why Cynder will probably save Spyro, Spyro’s internal struggles are 100% Eon’s responsibility, and he is one of the three characters that we have seen who is a being that contains pure light (Spyro, Cynder from her mom, and Eon); so he would be a great light-giving candidate, but there would be a price to that. Master Eon (as we saw in season one) cannot expose himself to darkness on a great scale, and cannot expend his light without falling deathly ill. So if we wanted an Ignitus in Skylanders Academy who wanted to do right by Spyro even if just once, Eon would likely sacrifice himself to restore Spyro.

Eon is killed: This doesn’t need an explanation, Eon either dies from sacrificing himself, or he is killed by Strykore or Spyro.

What I believe will happen: Knowing the themes of family and friendship; while also keeping all of the Legend Series themes and concepts that are apparent and repeating in Skylanders Academy. Spyro’s team will likely try to save him, but will either fail or give up thinking that he may be too far gone. So they will likely start to relentfully view him as an enemy. Then will come the involvement of either Cynder or Eon to save him; I can almost guarantee Cynder will be the one to save him, because Eon likely shouldn’t die, and also because Cynder is the only character in the series outside of Spyro who has walked on both the dark and the light, and possesses a very unique knowledge of how one can choose to be evil, and can be saved from that, so she will likely either give him her light (some or all, either could happen), after having to either face him with the Skylanders, or face the Skylanders to be able to get him to open up to her enough in his dark form. But yeah; she’ll definitely be saving him; I want to go out on a limb and say that she’ll have to abandon her father and the Skylanders in the process; while also facing Kaos. Of course this series may not go that far, but I’m going to say that will happen, because that will enable Spyro and Cynder to save all of Skylands with Stealth Elf and the rest of the team helping as needed if they aren’t incapacitated, but it will also reflect a very specific condition that I will explain right below this.

•A large part of Skylanders Academy was how it had its own twist on the Legend of the Purple Dragon, in the Legend Series, Malefor and Spyro were Eternal (meaning cannot die at all), and in Skylanders Academy spyro had invulnerable scales, and both Spyros are said to have many more powers. But there is one confirmed power of the Legend Series Spyro that is known by fans as Convexity, and by the game files as Aether. It is one of the many powers that Spyro possesses in the Legend series that makes him as rediculously powerful as he was at the age of fourteen in Dawn of the Dragon (that and being unable to die), but his Aether powers had one twist to them; they were able to be accessed through a balance between dark and light; his dark form being a result of losing himself to the darkness of his heart and emotions and being overcome by dark Aether (along with his critically untreated depression that he only had a hold over with Cynder), but there was no real side-effect of being overcome by light and light-related emotions, unless if love overcoming him with light is what roided his heart into repairing the planet. It was also this power that he used to purify Cynder and restore her at the end of A New Beginning. Meaning that Cynder in Skylanders Academy could maybe even unlock this power; if not use it to save Spyro.

If Skylanders Academy was to use a twist on that power to defeat Strykore, then they would be bringing a lot of their lore full-circle, most of Spyro’s lore in Skylanders Academy being a modified version of the Legend Series Spyro’s lore after all, but the only question is; what would they change about Spyro’s Convexity/Aether powers before revealing them in Skylanders Academy? Cause if they kept them how they are now; then Spyro himself would never be able to use them outside of a few set circumstances; with Aether powers requiring a balance between darkness and light where Spyro is always either a being of 100% pure light or 100% darkness he would never be able to use them unless if he was able to becoming a being of both dark and light. Though with Aether being the one superpower that by its own nature should be able to accomplish anything; it will likely be required to save the Skylands. But there is one gem of a character who fits the requirements for Aether as they were in the Legend Series, and that gem is Cynder; with her mom being a Purple Dragon and her father being the ruler of the underworld; she would be a being of perfect balance between darkness and light by birth and nature. That would make her the perfect candidate to save the Skylands or even Spyro with her Aether powers. She could even try to restore Spyro with her light, which would then place either both of them at 75% dark 25% light, or she will abandon all of her light to save him; leaving Spyro at the perfect balance needed to save the Skylands, but then he would have to clutch a Cynder as she either falls to darkness, or fights desperately to remain herself; then Eon could show up and sacrifice his light to both restore Cynder to her perfect balance and bring Spyro back to 100% percent, or he could leave spyro and cynder at perfect balances and stay at a 50% light 50% neutral state, and then the series will likely end with Spyro either rejoining the Skylanders with Cynder, bringing Cynder with him to save the purple dragons if not going alone, or leave the Skylanders and become a guardian figure of perfect balance between darkness and light either along or with Cynder who shares the same description. Who knows; I’m just babbling on about what’s possible with the lore of the series.

3. ——————GAME STUFF: I said I would like input on game names and stuff, so here I am asking. The game that you’ve all been seeing some random map sketches from is the second game on my development list, but it hasn’t been named yet. The inspiration for the games initial idea was actually my frustration with the pokemon series... I was frustrated with all of the limits that the game series placed on everything, from levels to training to even relationship development; so I started to create a Bestiary that had creature stats and growths plotted out heavily, and I have been trying to design personality types and creature interaction concepts. With creatures ranging from single-stage to five-stage creatures with each one being able to train their stats infinitely in their final stage. I wanted all of the evolutions to be locked-out be relationship level requirements at certain stages, and I wanted there to be main character creatures that would be with you throughout the entire game. So I started designing a creature game that will do all of that. Backstage, he introduced himself cheerfully as “David Cassidy,” and I could see why. But with few exceptions (if pressed, Peter Frampton and Suzi Quatro come to mind), cute people are not quite believable as pained, ravaged, booze-based, serious rockers.

But a photographer on the tour finds the daily commute limiting. “So far,” he says, “I’m shooting an architectural book, mostly buildings. They don’t exactly hang out a lot.”

There are tapes of Paul singing a line – “Till you go down” – and of a laughing hyena, a pig and a bull. Here, too, is the chorale behind McCulloch’s number, “Medicine Jar,” and the robot/chain saw/moog/drum sound that opens “Silly Love Songs.” And the sounds of frying bacon and chips that appeared on Linda’s “Cook of the House,” her first solo vocal outing on the most recent album, Wings at the Speed of Sound. I mention the criticism that has already built over her celebration of her place in the kitchen. She swivels on her electric piano bench. “My answer,” she says, “is always ‘Fuck off!’ ” She continues, in a weird hybrid of accents from England, New York and finishing school. “Look, we had a great loon in the studios that night. All the hung up people don’t have to buy it, don’t have to listen to it. It’s like having parents on your back, this criticizing. I’ve grown up. I had a great night last night, this is a great band and this is great fun. And that’s all we care about.”

We are talking about “Silly Love Songs” as a reaction to criticism. “You respond to it,” she says, “but I’d rather have life without it. I had life without it before and found it quite nice. You have criticism in school. When you get out of school, you want to be free.”

It is 6:20; the show has a scheduled 8 p.m. starting time and he’s been booked into a gold-record presentation with Capitol Records/EMI of Canada, interviews with CBC-TV, two radio stations, one Toronto paper, and ROLLING STONE. And he should have dinner. He is running late. But a rushed sound check in Detroit spoiled the first concert there, and he isn’t about to let it happen again. He steps out of the Fleetwood, looks around, asks the closest person where the stage is and heads off. Dressed in his usual offstage clothing – loud Hawaiian print shirt, tails hanging out of a short leather jacket, unfaded jeans and rubber-soled shoes – he jumps from bass to keyboards to guitars to drums, pumping frantically until he loses a stick. Then he occupies himself behind the sound board to check other mikes and instruments. He works meticulously and by the time he’s finished, it’s 7:20. Capitol and all the interviewers have been waiting since five, but Paul seems positively casual. After a ten-minute break and a huddle with his manager (Brian Brolly, a former MCA executive who joined McCartney in 1974), he signals us into the dressing room for a double-speed interview that takes us up to the minute he has to switch to his stage outfit, a black suit with sequined shoulders. He gnaws at a fried-chicken drumstick, waving his hands expressively and freely to emphasize points.

We begin with Laine’s complaint – about the audience responding more out of awe for Paul than from appreciation of the music.

“I don’t think that’s happening so much now,” he says. “I think that’s what this tour is doing. David Essex was talking excitedly about the British audience. ‘They’re still screaming, you know.’ Well, for him they are, and that’s his kind of audience, but when we went out, we just got up there and started playing like we were a new group. So everyone just took us like that. Sat there. ‘Yeah, that’s all right.’ And they got up and danced when we did dancing numbers. It’s perfect: you can have your cake and eat it, because they roar when you need them to roar and they listen when you’re hoping they might be listening.”

McCartney opens a fresh pack of cigarettes – the brand, Senior Service – lights up and continues:

“There is this feeling that I should mind if they come to see me as a Beatle. But I really don’t mind. They’re coming to see me; I don’t knock it. It doesn’t matter why they came, it’s what they think when they go home. I don’t know for sure, but I’ve got a feeling that they go away thinking, ‘Oh, well, it’s a band.’ It lets them catch up. I think the press, the media is a bit behind the times, thinking about the Beatles a lot. And I think the kids go away from the show a lot hipper than even the review they’re going to read the next day.”

The press, however, seems to be catching up. On numerous next mornings, reviews have told about the reviewers’ discovery – that Wings is a rock & roll band. The New York Times attended the first show, in Fort Worth, and called it “impressively polished yet vital” and “harder-edged” than expected. Newsweek, apparently forgetting Wings’ six-year stack of golden wax, declared, “Paul McCartney had proved that he could make it on his own.”

“The whole idea behind Wings,” says McCartney, “is to get a touring band. So that we are just like a band, instead of the whole Beatles myth.”

But no matter how much he wants to be just a member of a band, and no matter how good the band is, most of the audience is there to see one man. You can tell by the explosion of strobes and flashes from cameras around the auditorium when the moment occurs that McCartney is by himself on the stage. And by the subsequent explosion set off by people who want to capture the actual moment McCartney is singing “Yesterday.”

Will I dare offer him this riff; what if he turns it down?’ This standoffishness. But again, you consult your inner oracle and it tells you, well, it’s time that does all of that. You can’t take a baby and make him 14 overnight. Everyone is coming forward a bit more now. So I just thank me lucky stars that I hung in there.”

But democracy, as McCartney knows, has its price. “You’re opening the door to other possibilities, and that’s sort of what broke the Beatles up, really. The freedom for the personalities to do it. I started a group, I’ve got my wife in, took the kids on the road, just because it was all part of the way I feel.”

The McCartney family image does not seem to bother or affect any of the other band members, but McCartney seems sensitive about its effects on Wings’ audience and on the band’s image.

The audience, he says, is “kind of the age group that goes to concerts – kids – and with us it stretches through to older people who were listening to the Beatles and have come right through. Surprisingly, the audience is, as Paul notes, pretty much your rock concert crowd, more wheelchairs than baby strollers and not a picnic basket or a leisure suit in sight. And no one seems perturbed that the leader of Wings is not on the loose, the way a Robert Plant or Roger Daltrey or Mick Jagger seem to be. And even if they’re married, they don’t display their wives up onstage with them.

“I used to think of that, when we first got together, had Linda in the group. ‘Oh, oh, we’ve had it with the groupies now! Everyone’s gonna think we’re real old squares – blimey! Married! God, at least we could have just lived together or something – that would have been a bit hip.’ Then you realize it doesn’t matter. They really come for the music. At first it did seem funny to be up there with a wife instead of just friends or people associated with the game. But I think the nice thing that’s happened is it seems to be part of a trend anyway, where women are getting in a bit more, families are a bit cooler than they were, Things change.

“And the show doesn’t have anything that’s ‘family.’ I mean, I kissed Linda onstage the other night, and for me, that’s kind of, ‘Wow, I must be getting real relaxed,’ ’cause I can’t do that in public, normally. I’m a bit kinda shy.”

It is past eight now; the show, it was decided, would start around 8:30. Capitol and local press are still waiting. Paul waves all that aside with a hand. He had told a publicist that he wanted to do this interview right.

Being a family man, he is saying now, has not affected his songwriting. McCartney, after all, was always the softer, poppier side of the Beatles. “I still think basically the same kind of things I used to; the only difference is I’ll do a tune like ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ [an early Wings single], but that’s the kind of thing kids request. Limitations? Maybe. The only kind I can think of is not wanting to be maybe too . . . far out. But I write songs basically the same way, which is any way. It’s mainly just when I’ve got a minute, but that can come in any different form. Just sit around . . . if I feel like playing my guitar, a song comes out. That’s the same as it’s always been.”

Onstage, Linda McCartney stays discreetly in the shadows, behind her keyboards, for the first few numbers, leaving Paul looking unattached at least for a while. When he introduces her as “my better half,” she gets a roar of approval. In Detroit, with Paul on piano, she steps up to a vocal mike in front of the keyboards only after the 19th song has passed. Number 20 is “My Love,” and she places her hands, rather dramatically, on her hips, as if to show the crowd just who “does it good.” But for the most part, she is there to lend able support to the band. And she has developed into a capable backup vocalist, and a spirited rock & roll cheerleader.

WINGS IS A POP MACHINE that has produced five albums in five years, with singles filling in the occasional lags. And now, as McCartney had hoped before the most recent personnel were affixed, it is a traveling band as well, with annual U.S. tours a real possibility. As such, there is less time for other projects but McCartney is still hoping to do the songs and score for a full-length animation film of Rupert, a British cartoon character. Rupert, McCartney explained, is a bear. “I like Walt Disney cartoons,” he says. “They sort of live forever.”

Rupert the bear is not exactly Yellow Submarine, in which, you remember, the Fab Four took on the Blue Meanies in defense of good old Pepperland and what it stood for: music, beauty and color. And some other stuff. Without getting into what the real-life Beatles seemed to stand for, one wonders what McCartney stands for today.

A year and a winter ago, another former Beatle went on tour and, to put it mildly, flopped. George Harrison had maturity, sincerity and the best intentions on his side. He appreciated the Beatles and his role in the phenomenon, he said, but he had grown up, changed, and did not care to dwell in the past. And to let everyone know how firmly he felt, he did a two-and-a-half-hour show dominated by Indian music. He did four Beatles songs, and this only after active encouragement from fellow musicians on the tour. He changed lyrics in three of the four Beatles songs, and rearrangements (along with George’s overworked, hoarse voice) turned them into hardly reasonable facsimiles of the songs many in the audiences had wanted to hear.

Paul and Linda attended Harrison’s Madison Square Garden show, Paul disguised in Afro wig, shades and walrus mustache, “and we loved it,” he says. He agrees that George had the right, at whatever critical cost, to say, “This is me, now.”

And they all went crazy on drugs. And that was the end of the story for her. Well, that’s kind of silly. And I think there’s a lot of people approaching the new shows like that. ‘Oh, well, can they actually stand up there when they were once the Beatles.’ You just have to say, ‘Well, this is me now, sorry, folks.’ Sergeant Pepper‘s a big change from the record before it. That was us then. So I think George is just taking it very naturally and saying, ‘This is me.’ “

McCartney has said he doesn’t want to get into criticizing Harrison, but the producer in him finally wins out: “If I’d been producing him and if I’d been his impresario on that tour,” he says, “I would have asked him to do a few more songs he was known for. And also to stick to the arrangement a little bit.” McCartney puts on a good-natured look. “To which he’d probably say, ‘Piss off,’ and good luck to him.”

But, he adds, “I can see his attitude totally.” On the first Wings tours – a limited, bus-hopping affair to British universities in 1972, a larger European swing in ’73 – “We did the same thing; just no Beatles whatsoever. I’ll tell you the truth: it was too painful. It was too much of a trauma. It was like reliving a sort of a weird dream, doing a Beatles tune. One of the guys promoting us on that European tour said, ‘At the end, you should just come on with a guitar and do “Yesterday.” ‘I thought, ‘Oh God, I couldn’t face it.’ Because there was a lot of rubbish on, you know. We were into fighting for a while, we were being poisoned against each other by various people, mainly by one man who shall remain anonymous.”

The man, of course, was Allen Klein, who became manager of John, George and Ringo in May 1969, over McCartney’s protests. As tension in the studios mounted, as Apple teetered, and as Ringo, John and Paul announced separate threats to split, McCartney suspected Klein of taking more than his share of Apple’s money. In spring 1970, in order to take action against Klein, he was forced to sue Apple – and the other Beatles themselves – for dissolution of the group. After several difficult years, the years of the rubbish, Lennon, Harrison and Starr, along with others involved in Apple, filed suit in London against Klein, for “fraud,” for taking “excessive commissions” and for “otherwise mismanag[ing]” his clients. Klein turned around and filed a suit, in New York, against the three ex-Beatles, Yoko Ono and Apple for more than $63 million in damages and future earnings; Klein enjoined McCartney as part of a “conspiracy” to damage or injure him and his company, seeking damages of $34 million plus interest. The London case against Klein is scheduled to go to court next January.

McCartney hopes to steer clear of the trial, he says, but will cooperate with testimony – “anything that can help. I just want everyone’s head to be clear, to get on with what they do.” Klein’s countersuit, McCartney says, “is an old manager’s trick; the best form of defense being attack. It’s ridiculous what he’s doing. Even for himself. He should just get on with his business and think, ‘Well, Christ, I got the Stones’ old masters, I got this’ – he had a half million out of the company, so he’s had a bit, you know. But he’s just trying to hang in there, to prove a point. It’s a bit … to me it’s very like the Nixon thing, of ‘I said I was a goodie and I’m damn well going to prove it.’ “

With the pressures between him and the others off, McCartney found the songs coming back. “You think, well, they’re great tunes, I like the tunes. When we played them we’d get a bit nostalgic, think, ‘Oh, this is nice, isn’t it.’ So I just decided in the end, this wasn’t such a big deal. I’d do them.”

McCartney, in fact, is doing only one more Beatles song than George did on his tour. He, too, wanted to play down the Beatle identity (the tour is billed “Wings over America” and McCartney’s name does not appear on tickets or advertising). He selected the songs at random, he says, rejecting “Hey Jude” as a closer simply because “it didn’t feel right,” and choosing instead a song played on previous tours but never recorded, an all-out jam rocker called “Soily.”

But the difference between Harrison and McCartney is in the faithfulness of Paul’s arrangements, so that the horn section does a credible impression of a cello on “Yesterday,” and “Lady Madonna” is churned out happily, and “The Long and Winding Road” and “Blackbird” are almost straight off the records. Only on “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” played on amplified 12-string Ovation guitar, with the McCartneys’ and Laine’s voices blending together in a folky, Rooftop Singers style, does he wander.

In Toronto, there was a rash of reunion rumors. By show time, scalpers outside were happily selling their tickets for $50 and $60 apiece, while inside, film crews from as far away as London had their cameras hoisted and ready. From the first show in Texas, there had been talk that the once-again-friendly Beatles might do a friendly number together. In New York, where Lennon lives, similar talk persists. And in London, “Yesterday,” the single, leads a pack of two dozen Beatles reissues invading the pop charts.

McCartney is pleased about “Yesterday.” “It happens to coincide, luckily for us. It’s bringing it to people’s ears. That’s the main thing, really, ’cause if you’re not in with a single or record, people just tend to forget.” He is not wary of an acetate Beatlemania leading to even more fervent calls for a reunion.

Now, in Toronto, he is qualifying that remark.

And I saw John last time, he says, ‘I agreed with that.’ But there’s a million other points in there. A whole million angles.

And as long as I could get everyone to say, ‘No, we’re definitely not,’ then I could say ‘It’s a definite no-no.’ But I know my feeling, and I think the others’ feeling, in a way, is we don’t want to close the door to anything in the future. We might like it someday.

You just can’t even come out and see our show.’ So there are these other involvements. If anyone comes, they feel like they’ve got to get up. Then they get up, we’ve got to be good. Can’t just get up and be crummy, ’cause then they say, ‘The Beatles really blew it on the Wings tour,’ or something. So, but you see how long I’ve taken just to answer this question. God, it goes on forever. So you can see why I just wanted to say no.”

And yet, McCartney just cannot close the door.

The emotional high point of the concert, of course, is “Yesterday,” but the showstopper is “Live and Let Die,” the song McCartney wrote for a James Bond film. In concert, Wings attacks the audience with powder kegs, strobes, smoke, syncopated spotlights, and the laser machine gunning string beams of light from back of the stage to the opposite end of the hall. And the music – teasing, then exploding into rat-a-tat violence – fully warrants the effects.

For “Band on the Run,” the last number before the encore call, a film of the shooting of the album cover is projected onto a movie screen; behind other songs, paintings – and one cartoon – appear on another screen, behind the band. The paintings, McCartney says, are by Magritte and David Hockney; the etchings of Magneto and Titaniun Man are by Marvel Comics. “It’s all art,” says the Beatle.

Before the tour, the best guesses had Wings grossing $4.5 million for 28 shows in 20 cities. Since then, a huge show has been added in Seattle – at the 60,000-capacity King Dome – and additional concerts have been added in Los Angeles and Chicago. The gross should be over $5 million, roughly a million more than the Harrison tour. But the net should be another story, given the lavishness of the stage show, the size of the entourage (17 with Showco, nine-piece band, family, friends, publicists, manager, security and various other aides) and the private Braniff-leased Bac 1011 jet that flies the band back to a base city after every concert – not to mention a mess of Wings memorabilia. Out in the lobbies, fans can pick up a T-shirt, a program and a poster. But backstage, for the touring party, there are Wings jackets, T-shirts from all the different tours, badges, pins, patches and medallions. Linda wears jeans with “Wings” embroidered on a back pocket; she and Paul wear matching ivory wings on necklaces. And the crew drinks from Wings paper cups.

The in-group level of a kind of Wingsmania is furthered by the chronicling of this tour: concerts are being recorded for a possible album, filmed for a possible movie, photographed separately by two cameramen for the press and a possible book, and sketched, courtroom-artist style, for possible future paintings or inclusion in another possible book.

Here, they manage to oblige the executives of Capitol Records/EMI of Canada, shake hands all around, accept six gold and platinum albums, pose for photographs, have a laugh or two and apologize for having to run – all within three minutes. But everybody, in the end, is happy.

The local interviewers are still afloat; they’ve been informed that after the show Wings have to make a quick getaway because their jet has to be off the runway by midnight, to comply with a noise-abatement ordinance. So they are not planning to get any time with McCartney.

They will have just about two hot minutes.

Brolly gets itchy and clears his throat and the room all at once, and the McCartneys scram into their limo and screech away.
