all my ttpd notes on each song before public opinion (overall opinion of the album at the end)
i didnt include tracks 1-6 bc ive posted about them already, but ill add them slowly by eod tomorrow most likely
fresh out the slammer
this is the track i was most excited for i think
oh title drop very early
fresh. out. the slammer. uhhh
i love the flow on all of the songs but i especially like this, its very fluid
FOR JUST ONE HOUR OF SUNSHINE!!!
in the shade of how he was feeling
the flow is very midnight rain i think
OOOH THE CHANGE AT 2:25 I LOVE THISSSSS
"im the girl of his american dreams" OMGGGG
i like the second half way better but the song is awesome
i think what im noticing about the album overall (so far) is it feels very empty production wise. its mostly her voice carrying it through but its hollow and i really think we need a more full production on this, or at least some parts of it. it feels uneven yk? or sort of unfinished, like she had the vocals and just slapped something behind it
florida!!!
VERY VERY EXCITED FOR THIS FLORENCE!!!!!!
and my friends all smell like weed or little babies.... ok.
okkkk less than a minute in and this is sooo anti-capitalist for a billionaire
FLORENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was so scared she'd be swept aside
"all my girls got their lace and their crimes"
so many mentions of a cheating husband on this album
"is that a bad thing to say in a song?" I LOOOOOVE MENTIONS OF THE MEDIA IN THAT MEDIA
FLORIDAAAA!! IS ONE HELL OF A DRuug..........
you can kind of here the thinness (??) of taylor's voice next to florence, the depth is lacking -- not necessarily bad, just something you can hear more with this track
some parts of it ("little did you know...") sound sort of like everybody wants to rule the world, idk if thats just me
guilty as sin
love the production this is so niceee
am i allowed to cry!
"oh what a way to dieeeee"
MESSY TOP LIP KISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
without ever touching his skin, how can i be guilty as sin............ is this about matty healy please
the quiet distorted "what?" in the bg is very bejeweled
my bedsheets are ablaze
the melody on this is lowkey kind of boring. theres points where i expect her to do something interesting with her voice and flick up or drop low or trill and it just doesnt happen. would be very cool if that was there
"long suffering propriety" that whole bridge is written well but sung so clunky? like it doesnt sound natural it sounds like syllable filler yk? and i know this bc i do it way too much KSJDCHIUHRFIUH
ending with am i allowed to cry, its very much an internal song. idk how to explain it but shes looking in, and when she says am i allowed to cry, shes looking up. <- what???
whos afraid of little old me?
ooooh it starts out so cunty
"my bare hands paved their paths"
you dont get to tell me about sad!
I LOVE THISSS its so mad woman its so rep coded
"i leap from the gallows and i levitate down your street" GREAT LYRIC HILARIOUS VISUAL ITS LIKE THAT HALLWAY MEME BUT WITH TAYLOR. hold on
okay
WHOS AFRAID OF LITTLE OLD ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you should be <- ME TO MY MOM
production goes off cunty as fuck
"the scandal was contained" OMGG TELL ME TELL ME
you dont get to tell me you feel bad variant
BRIDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think this is my favorite track i love it
"the circus life made me mean" ooooh very very interesting. i will analyze this song more fully later but not on this post
"tell me everything is not about me, what if it is?" OKAYYYYY
the way she sings "you should be" reminds of something on folklore/evermore but i cant think of what
shes very cool on this song. the emotion actually comes through.
"you wouldnt last an hour in the asylum where they raised me." oh okay! so like. have we considered not saying that.
i think that line turned me off the whole song KJSDCIUERFHIUEFH LIKE???? HELLO???????
i just. hm. very disappointed. you have one billion dollars. your parents put down the deposit for your career. ok.
the way she sings "wretched" and "narcotics" is what i wanted for more of the album. ykwim.
i will admit her screaming the title is veeeery very nice
"i am what i am cause you trained me" okkkk. im sorry taylor my bad!
idk how i feel about this song anymore. should i just ignore the lyrics and listen lmaoo
i can fix him (no i really i can)
okay i was waiting on this song but with the context of the rest of the album. idk. we'll see
okay IMMEDIATE ick.......... "the smoke cloud billows out his mouth like a freight train through a small town" okay taylor i guess rhymezone was in for her. idkkkkk
okay next line came in actually i spoke too soon it serves !!
this is very cowboy like me inverse
ughhh title drop already. see i wanted it cunty!!! why title it that when its so nothing. this is SO NOTHING
is this about matty healy. girl hes a neonazi you cant fix him
BRIDGE?????? i love when she shows off her kinks
okay. yeah this song was very nothing.
loml
the piano is very gentle on this and muted. i like it
is this aaron dessner? hold on lemme check
yes it is!!!
"never before and never since" looooove <3 <3 <3
"still alive, killing time at the cemetery, never quite buried in your suit and tie" LOOOOOOVE <3 <3 <3
this is very her relationship with religion methinks....
"about a million times" ala illicit affairs "a million little times"
"when your impressionist paintings of heaven turned out to be fakes" i think this is my favorite lyricism out of the album, its very natural its very clear its very real. i really really like it
A CONMAN SELLS A FOOL A GET LOVE QUICK SCHEME. GAGGED
some of it is very grieving that she didnt last with her first love, that she still has to work for it. but its also still feeling like a metaphor for religious beliefs and god, that she cant fully believe and she wishes she had unwavering faith
MR STEAL YO GIRL????????????
"talking rings and talking cradles"
i wish i could unrecall how we almost had it all
"SOMETHING COUNTERFEIT'S DEAD" GLITCH I ALWAYS BELIEVED IN YOU (lie)
"ill never leave. never mind"
the way this extends is very phoebe bridgers and the way she enunciates "loss of my life" is very her as well
okay donesies. i liked this one a lot.
i can do it with a broken heart
i like the glimmery production
lyrics again are flopping a little :/
"im a real tough kid, i can handle my shit" 😸 okay
GOTTA FAKE IT TIL I MAKE IT TIL I DID !!!
the lyrics are so over and so back so much its killing me. i cringe so hard i cry and then i gag just as hard
lights camera bitch smile even when i wanna die......................
"ALL THE PIECES OF ME SHATTERED WHILE THE CROWD WAS SCREAMING MORE" im so. im sooo sos so so feeling aout this.
whos counting in the background idk how i feel about it
"im so depressed i act like its my birthday everyday" ughhhhh!!! cunty but she didnt sing it right yk. idk.
production slays
"im so obsessed with him but he avoids me like the plague" we're back again. i told yall its over and back and over and back SOOOOOO MUCH
okay i think i like it
I CRY A LOT BUT I AM SO PRODUCTIVE! SOOOOOOOOOOOO ME
i wanted the whole album to be like that verse
im a real tough kid again :/ shhhh
"in stilettos for miles" eras im so so sorry girl
IM SO DEPRESSED I ACT LIKE ITS MY BIRTHDAY EVERY DAY IM SO OBSESSED WITH HIM BUT HE AVOIDS ME LIKE THE PLAGUE I CRY A LOT BUT I AM SO PRODUCTIVE ITS AN ART YOU KNOW YOURE GOOD WHEN YOU CAN EVEN DO IT WITH A BROKEN HEART! ! !
when she does "you know youre good!" and the laughing and everything ohhhh my god. IM SO MISERABLE! AND NO ONE KNOWS! dont try and come for my job OKAYYYYYYY SHE SERVED ON THIS
okay i think i really like this song. i just need a couple days lol
the smallest man who ever lived
veryyyyy excited for this. i think. a little.
"who the fuck was that guy" OKAYY!!!!!!!!
theres no lyric i was to write here but its all very good btw
she sounds like my english teacher vocally and its killing me KSJDCIUERHFIUERH
"in public showed me off then sank in stoned oblivion"
i cant figure out what shes saying "once your queen had come, you treat her like an ulcer and"??? alseran?? i cant understand it skdjfhieurhiuerg
you didnt measure up in any measure of a man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! taylor date girls <3
the production is building here i like it is she gonna belt/scream
YEAHHHH BELTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"were you a sleeper cell spy in 50 years will all this be declassified and youll confess why you did it and ill say good riddance cause it wasnt sex [something something] and it wasnt forbidden" I REAAAAALLY LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i like when she makes up situations and puts herself in them
YOU CRASHED MY PARTY AND YOUR RENTAL CAR
you kicked out the stage lights but youre still performing.
"you are what you did" versus innocent's "who you are is not where you've been"
i like this track
the alchemy
I WAS SUPER EXCITED FOR THIS BUT NOW IDK HOW TO FEEL!!! idk im just jumping in
oh r&b production?? interesting....
ooh whats the rumbling thing i like that
shes returning to something but what...
TOUCHDOWN IS THIS KILLATRAV !!!!!!!!!!!!!! KILLATRAV KILLATRAV !!!!!!!!!!!
oh title drop but i wasnt listening KJSHCIUHEGFH
reference to maathp
is this returning to american boys KJIUFHEORUFHOERF???
oh this is sooooo referencing maathp
okay but it sounds like this person and her were already together and now theyre back "his heart....is still reserved for me" or maybe thats just trav holding on the friendship bracelet
i hate to say this but "wheres the trophy? he just comes running over to me" is very call it what you want + sweet nothing and another song i cant remember right now but yall know...... im sorry
im stupid as hell i cant hear what the line is where she says the alchemy
"he jokes that its heroine but this time with an e" THIS TIME??????
very much like this song. def not what i was expecting and im disappointed in that regard but its still a fun song
clara bow
nervous for this song. i like when she references people and places but theres a way to do it so i get scared every time
oooh ear ringing noise is very fun. i hope its not the whole time though
immediate title drop
oh so its not her? shes talking to someone else i think
oh this is in her past i think
lyrics are flopping.
"breath of fresh air through the smoke rings" like i can fix him (no really i can"
ohhh tambourine WAS stevie nicks reference
SORRY i dont like how she says eclipse lmaoo
i kind of dont vibe with all the small town references its as if she needs to remind us where she came from to be considered good like look how much i did when i came from nothing (even though she didnt)
YOU LOOK LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT IN THIS LIGHT !!!!
youve got edge, she never did girlllllllllll
so does she consider herself the "replacement" for clara bow?
song is okay i think it might grow on me. i think the biggest disappointment on this album is how predictable it all feels sonically.
the black dog
bonus track!! this is the only one i have so i might add the others later but tbh i might wait bc i dont know how much i. care.
muted pianooooo i love muted piano<333
YOU SHARED YOUR LOCATION AND FORGOT TO TURN IT OFF
oh the black dog is a bar. im kind of. okay. okay
"shes too young to know this song" is a nice line but its clunky how its sung
old habits die screaming!
girl your longing does NAWT stay unspoken
folklore when she used "big" words it felt natural (for the most part). here it feels performative? like it doesnt FIT naturally
"was it hazing for a cruel fraternity i pledged" idk how to feel about this!
lots and lots of smoke references!
"six weeks of breathing clean air" -> CLEAN!!!!!!!!!!
two times she says she wants to burn her clothes on this album
i like the production im literally kind of ignoring the lyrics
omg never mind "tail between your legs youre leaving"
personal ick but i hate when songs cut off in a word. she goes "old habits die screeeeeam-" and nothing. JUST SAY THE -ING
okay cool. mid song but i hope the swifties who thought it was about depression and got the variant are feeling okay<33
overall: idk about this album. i went in really excited and so maybe thats why i feel so let down... but i feel so let down. this isnt what was marketed, this isnt anything even real for a lot of it. she's all over the place and i dont think its a tight and solid album -- although monetarily it will obviously look like one. there are moments where we get something very her and very real and i think those moments save the album. the production is also a little all over the place, and so very nothing. im not asking her to do anything fresh or new but why would you market it as if it was and not deliver?
i liked florida!!!, loml, and i can do it with a broken heart -- i think clara bow, the alchemy, and some others (you can tell with my notes LOL) will grow on me. and the tortured poets department and my boy only breaks his favorite toys were good songs, but i think i need a few days to actually acknowledge them as such.
also i think lyrically shes done a few very interesting things. it almost feels like debut with how specific it is and the name dropping and everything -- however it is new/rusty for her so that also kind of hurts her overall. i think maybe this is like good practice for a more evolved narrative lyricism in the future, bc her past mo of hazy visuals and thinly connected moments to string into a narrative just doesnt work anymore.
i will say. she did make me experience all 5 stages of grief plus some fun extras. maybe not in the way she wanted, but i did anyway ! its a fun album and i def think ill like it more as time goes on, but this is my opinion without outside influence and within the first day of listening -- i want to see how that changes! im also holding off on album rankings until a week or two passes
#ALRIGHT WHO WANT ME !#a lot of times my initial reaction to a song is very different from how i feel about it as i keep listening so trust NOTHING i say kdsjfhie#(regarding rankings and favorites not the notes)#and with taylor you have to let the songs grow on you#taylor swift#the tortured poets department#ttpd#the tree speaks

are there any details you remember about the vocaloid-song-from-an-undertale-amv you've lost? maybe someone could just happen to recognize it from some sort of description
The details are a bit muddled and I'll probably get something wrong since this was about 3 years ago but I'll tell you what I can still remember
I remember the undertale AMV did a homage to the original MV by having a yellow and white color pallete.
I distinctly remember the color pallete of both mvs being white and yellow.
Now I'll split this into three categories so it won't get confusing.
THE UNDERTALE AMV:
It featured either frisk or chara fighting sans and i also believe toriel was in the video, it was 2d with the characters being completely white with black outlines and a yellow bg
THE ORIGINAL MV:
I think that in the original the two characters featured in the mv were a boy and a girl, the story of the song might have been love because of that??? I'm not really sure. One scene i specifically remember is the girl riding on a bike. Both of them wore school uniforms, either that or casual clothing like tshirts and shorts.
I remember the account which the mv was posted on (which i would assume was the producer's channel) had other songs with mvs of a similar style (one of them being orange and white) and also the lyrics of the song would appear in white text
I also remember the title had katakana and kanji in it
THE SONG ITSELF:
I don't remember what the song sounded like for the most part, but I do remember one specific part of the song like right before the chorus or after it i think that had distorted vocals and it was pretty fast
I doubt anyone will recognise it from this little but it was worth a try, thanks for the ask anon!!

album review - she wants revenge, she wants revenge (2005) by a fool who knows nothing
tracklist:
red flags and long nights
these things
I don't want to fall in love
out of control
monologue
broken promises for broken hearts
sister
disconnect
us
someone must get hurt
tear you apart
she loves me, she loves me not
i really like this as an opening song. it introduces the kind of synth and electro guitar and monotone singing that literally IS she wants revenge, and is very straight up about it. i like it when albums open with a long intro and then get into it, and this song nails both parts. the lyrics are alright, better than some of the ones on here at least. i love how he sings ((two weeks, two years or just tonight.
slow start to second track is bold, feels like an entirely different song, i would have put this further along when the style starts getting repetitive. then again i dont know shit about ass and have never made an album. i like this song. its very the killers. i like it when songs are sexy. hes not a bad man hes just overwhelmed. i think this album is a collection of terrible love stories rather than one narrative
this song is real full frontal monotone nasal synth drums brittish man. i hate it when people count in songs though, and this is EGREGIOUS. the lyrics are bad. the saving grace is the massive cannon-esque drum sound: (( I don't wanna. DOOF DOOF .... . other than that this is boring to me, but it fits in well so far, it feels like a heightened pitch of some of the other songs.
nobody writes songs about powerful DJs anymore... what happened to dj got us falling in love? anyway i like the opening because its sexy and i like the line we're slaves to the DJ and out of control. this song is where it starts getting repetitive. still no good transition betwixt songs which is sad but fine. no one else will ever be folie a deux or pretty hate machine
i like this beat it wriggles around into you! it is scissor-sisters esque and i really like distortion in pop songs and the lyrics. this is a good one, smack in the mouth mentioned (sweet dinosaur world reference) and it feels different enough to everything before it to rejuvenate me. good outro
cheesy title!!!! it kind of seems like a retread to me. not that into it but it knows when and where to cut back different instruments
religious sex song religious sex song. what else is there to say. groovy. there is a really high pitched upsetting beeping very faint in the bg though.
i truly enjoy an intermission instrumental track <3 this was so relaxing
slowest song yet, sadly it is boring. nice layering though
i love it when songs are selfish and mean and there are good hooks (( i stand quite still / someone must get hurt and it won't be me, sadly this song was also boring
here we go !!! best song on the album, instantly iconic, nin-esque mixing, insane toxic lyrics, catchy, no flaws. its the most popular for a reason. listen to it right now. The backing vocals rly differentiate it and the tone and lyrics are standout
This is a good closer, feels like a weird aftermath to all the other songs' stories. Slow in a good way

ok the hozier edm track is good actually.
#i was worried they were gonna distort his voice but for the most part its just him singing with some house music in the bg#texttext#also SO surreal hearing him sing lyrics i havent heard before

// this is like. so specific. but alexa rly vibes with when pieces of music that are supposed to be like, fun and upbeat get interpolated into something less peppy. that includes distorted/glitched out vocals from otherwise happy/upbeat type music, sampling that reframes lyrics in a more dramatic light (I can't remember the song, just the concept, but I'm thinking of this hip-hop song that like, iirc samples a girl talking about her relationship history, and in the original she sounds like she's owning it but when it's resampled it sounds like, regretful), or disonance like arca's lethargy (yes yes I know, shut up about arca!!) where the vocals sound like they belong to a club song but the bg music sounds pretty lethargic and a bit eerie. he does like happy music of course, but also the fun stuff people do with it!
what if like he could just talk all day about this shit w the dash instead of kink du jour tho. lmao. none of your alts has your weird taste, dude. suffer.

Review: Midnight by Set It Off
Okay let's just get straight to it. Yall know I’m a slut for Set It Off. This is just gonna be me going in-depth into all of my favorite parts of the songs and lyrics. Les go
1. Killer In The Mirror
This has been a bop since DAY ONE are you kidding me????? The sampling? The sheer amount of fuck you energy? The fast part during the pre-chorus? The DROP for the chorus? Cody saying “knock ‘em all the FUCK out” adds 10 years to my lifespan every time I hear it.
Favorite Lyrics: Now I know, there’s no one I can trust I used to think there was Tell me that I’m cut throat- I think you got your eyes closed Feel the fear, and swallow back the tears Let weakness disappear There’s nobody but me here- the killer in the mirror
We been knew this shit goes hard NEXT
2. Hourglass
YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HOW BAD THIS DESTROYED ME WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT. The fucking,,,, instrumental!!! The beat!!!! Cinematics is on the phone and she said this is it chief!!!! God!!! Like can we PLEASE talk about the nananas during the bridge?? It’s such a small thing but it adds so fuckin much to the song,,,, unbelievable
Favorite Lyrics: I'm falling through the hourglass And I don't think I'll ever make it back So I throw stones at walls I'll never climb Victim to the sands of time
This is also such like? Such a defining song for the sound of the whole album, if you think about it. Quality shit
3. Lonely Dance
ANOTHER one we already knew slaps. The guitar? The trumpet? Iconic. This one has such a fucking Vibe. Also???? So relatable. Cody came through with the social anxiety moods and I owe him my life for it.
Favorite Lyrics: Some days I’m up, some days I’m down Some days, the world is way too loud Some days my bed won't let me out But I’m okay with missin’ out on the social anxiety Out on the phony friends I don’t need So I just turn off my phone, turn on TV Cause solo’s the only way I can breathe
Okay a great song but OLD NEWS let’s get to that Fresh Content
4. Different Songs
Possibly the danciest song on this album. The fucking guitar riff and the bass? The melodies? The harmonizing in the bg of the pre-chorus and the bridge? It all blends together and it’s SUCH a bop. The most poppin song about falling out of love I’ve ever heard
Favorite Lyrics: We once called it love, devolved into lust Jealousy speaks out to silence the trust We temper our words 'cause we're scared of the truth Humming tunes that we can't get through
5. For You Forever
The instrumental in this one KILLS me. So do Cody’s vocals, honestly. He really poured his heart out into those “forever”s and you FEEL it. This one really hits me in the heart tbh. The whole theme of giving up on something that you want so bad is big oof
Favorite Lyrics: She said; “I won't wait for you forever, for you forever So, don't you say it's for the better, it's for the better 'Cause I can't take later than never, later than never No, I won't wait for you forever”
6. Dancing With The Devil
THIS SHIT IS SO BRUTAL. Like even the opening- the distorted vocals,,, god. And the lyrics! So fucking pissed off. Cody once again KILLS the delivery. I will never be over the emotion he puts into every song he sings. And when that hook hits the second time with his normal vocals and then the distorted version UNDERNEATH? Hits so hard. Don't even TALK to me about the rap part god. Also,,,, idk if this is about who I Think It’s About but like either way,,, go off sis
Favorite Lyrics: You try to act as if you're saving me But you wouldn't cut the rope if it was hanging me I'm sick of people saying what you sow you reap 'Cause I've been counting down the minutes of that, so to speak Think of all the hours and hours of grindin’ That would turn into sour findings As I wonder if our resigning is becoming the silver lining But I’m not a coward, I’m fighting Cause if they’re the meat, then I’m biting So go ahead, ignoring and smiling Cause I’m climbing til’ I let you know
7. Go To Bed Angry (Feat. Wayfarers)
This is! Such a good song, and I love the message. Like, settling issues instead of being passive aggressive or quietly angry. And it’s so nice to listen? Like everything feels so clean and leads into each other so well. Also!!! I’ve never listened to Wayfarers before but GOD the guest vocalist is AMAZING. Her and Cody’s voices harmonize so well. All in all a fuckin BOP
Favorite Lyrics: So don't you walk away from me Let's settle this, rather hear you scream Than whisper shit- there's no in-between 'Cause if we sleep in our feelings, we'll never start healing
8. Midnight Thoughts
ANOTHER one with some heavy Cinematics vibes. Honestly, I feel like this one is a great example of how amazing this album’s production is. Like, there’s so many little background elements that come together to make it sound so fuckin cool. For example, that one hook near the end where it suddenly strips back to just a beat and vocals? KILLED me. Also, another relatable anxiety bop,
Favorite Lyrics: Dim the lights, shut the blinds, but I’m counting the time Am I nervous or am I insane? Try to turn up the sound, but I can’t shut it out 'Cause I’m hearing the pulse in my veins
9. Criminal Minds
The orchestral feel to this one is so nice, and the rhythm of the lyrics feels so cool. The strings were such a good touch, they go really well with the electric guitar somehow. Cody’s vocals also feel really smooth in this one? Like this is just a pretty sounding number I love it
Favorite Lyrics: This stress eats at my soul I can't tell if I'm breathing at all Street drama takes its toll So, hit the road
10. No Disrespect
UGHHHHH don't get me STARTED on the chorus here. The stripped back staccato rhythm of the vocals with the bursts of instrumental, and then the way it flows into the full instrumental for the repetition in the second half of the chorus. It sounds so fucking gooooooooooooooood I'm having a crisis
Favorite Lyrics: 'Cause I don't see you the way you want to Forget your rescue, we're dreaming, dreaming, dreaming We had our good times, but time has passed by Begin your new life, I'm reaching, pleading, screaming
11. Stitch Me Up
I have SO much to say about this song. Cody and Shay are so fucking cute and their relationship is so nice. Any time Cody talks or sings about Shay you can feel how fuckin in love they are. The only two nice love songs I can ever remember him writing (The other one being Diamond Girl) have been about her and they’ve both been absolute gems. This one especially. It has such a potent vibe that I can really only describe as a summer song. It’s so,,, bouncy and lively and genuinely sweet with just a faint hint of sadness and ughhhhhhhh. PLUS the fuckin commentary Cody gave for this song on his insta story,,,,
“One of my favorites. These lyrics came straight from the heart. [Shay] and I have both come from damaged relationships, but somehow being broken is what made us whole.”
Anyways love is real and I’m soft don't TOUCH ME
Favorite Lyrics: Stitch me up, stitch me up, don’t tear me apart I’ve been stuck in a rut, patched up in the dark Stitch me up, stitch me up, there’s pins in my heart Oh, pardon all my precious scars
12. Raise No Fool
Cody fuckin SNAPPED with this song and I’m living for it. One of the things Cody does so, so well, is delivering just the Most intense anger through his vocals and he brought it ALL for this one. You don’t know what happened but you fuckin FEEL it. Idk who this is about but like,,, killem Cody go Off bitch!!
Favorite Lyrics: Well, first you try to tell me that we're family Then you try to tell me that it's for the best You promise that you'll be there if I need ya But I don't need your handout, you can take it back!
13. I Want You (Gone) (Feat. Matt Appleton)
Another more mellow song, but it’s still so fuckin Good. It just has such a palpable vibe and feel. From what I can gather it’s about leaving a toxic relationship behind, and it Feels that way, in a sense? Like when I listen to it I just get this Feeling of something solemn yet triumphant and clean and new, like cutting someone shitty out of your life. PLUS, that sax? It adds SUCH a nice element to the second half of the song. Matt Appleton is a gift I’m so glad they brought him on for this song
Favorite Lyrics: I guess you'd say I'm blessed I threw away stress the moment I said I want you, I want you gone I'm on my own path, you're stuck in the past I want you, I want you gone
14. Unopened Windows
GOD,,, OKAY,,, HERE WE GO,,, Imma be real with yall. I cried the first time I heard this. It just be like that sometimes. But like this is LITERALLY Dad’s Song 2 and I wasn’t fuckin READY for that. There was no WARNING,,, I wasn’t told I was gonna get hit with that much EMOTION Okay okay for real though, this song is actually gorgeous. It’s just,,, pure fucking grief, so much of it, poured into a song. The composition, the vocals, every element of it is so powerful and heartbreaking. This is the kinda song you cry to- but like, a healing cry, the kind you have right before you take a deep breath and start moving on, y’know? The moment I heard Danny Boy near the end, I started crying all over again. Any time I hear this song or Dad’s Song, I cannot fucking begin to imagine how Cody must feel about what happened to his dad. It’s a kind of grief that can’t be explained. I’m just glad he feels like he can share it with all of us, and that he has a support system behind him. Also, I cannot communicate enough just how much this feels like a fucking,,, movie soundtrack. Like this shit would not feel out of place in a musical or something. The swelling orchestral music near the end fucking kills me. Gotta go cry again brb
Favorite Lyrics: All the stories left unwritten that we drew up in the past It's the game we never went to or the drinks we never had As I look up to the stars and make a wish to bring you back But I curse the roof above me and I learn to live behind all these Unopened windows, bound to my heart Fantasy so close feels so afar But I long to break the lock And live among the life we lost Through unopened windows; they tear me apart...
15. Happy All The Time (Feat. Skyler Acord)
WHAT a closing number. Addmmitedly a bit of a jarring followup to Unopened Windows, but it also makes a lot of sense, to go from a song about grief to a song about letting yourself process negative emotions. It also feels like SUCH a culmination of the album. Maxx even said in his Midnight release livestream, he thinks that it sort of represents the entire message of Midnight as a whole. The album was written to deal with a collection of sad, angry, and upsetting topics or experiences- this song takes all of those and says, “Dude, it’s fine, it’s okay to feel shitty, you don’t have to bottle it in or hide it” and honestly, there are so many people who need to hear that- it’s such an important message. Also??? The fucking???? Choir??? WHAT a touch. Honestly there are Several songs on this album that feel like they could be off a musical soundtrack and this is DEFINITELY one of them. It feels like a finale, and it’s so just powerful and uplifting and emotional, I love it so much.
Favorite Lyrics: It's okay, you're not crazy! Gotta taste the salt to love the sweet Let it out and scream “I'm okay, I'm not crazy!” 'Cause the tears remind me I'm alive It's fine to not be happy all the time!
Honestly, this may be my favorite album by them yet. It’s such a fucking monument to everything they’ve been through and learned and explored as a band for ten years, it has such a clear vision and comes together so well. The lyricism, vocals, instrumentals, composition, and production are all fucking fantastic. I’m so excited to see where this era leads us, and I’m so happy with what we’ve seen so far.
In conclusion, the boys did it again, I’m weeping, and stream Midnight on Itunes and Spotify. Peace out kids a bitch is gonna take a NAP

I’ve listened to star set a long time but just yesterday while listening to Telepathic, I looked up the lyrics and realized it’s the word TELEPATHIC that’s distorted in bg throughout the song
I’ve thought it was ‘call a doctor’ for months which DOESN’T EVEN RLY MAKE SENSE in context but thats what i thought it sounded like so that’s what I assumed yep

Listen To Dear Boy’s Bittersweet ‘The Strawberry EP’ a Day Ahead of Release [PREMIERE + Q&A]
California’s Dear Boy had an immense 2018; they were hailed as one of the best bands in Los Angeles by critics and music publications, sold out multiple hometown shows, embarked on a full US tour w/ Rogue Wave while also playing dates w/ Day Wave and Sunflower Bean—and there’s no signs of slowing down in 2019. On March 1, the nostalgic band will release The Strawberry EP (the third extended play of their career) into the world via the band's own label, Easy Hell and Burnside/The Orchard. Produced by Dear Boy, and mixed by Tony Hoffer (AIR, Phoenix, Beck, M83), the EP showcases the band's ability to craft bittersweet songs pulling from late 70's and early 80's post-punk and early 90's Britpop, large enough for arenas, but intimate enough to be with you during your most private moments.
The band’s wildly creative nature that has attracted not only a wildly devoted fan base, but the respect of fellow artists who have gone on to be collaborators. The Strawberry EP features appearances by their friends Day Wave, Hazel English, and Patrick Spurgeon of Rogue Wave. The four real life friends that make up Dear Boy (vocalist Ben Grey, guitarist Austin Hayman, drummer Keith Cooper, and bassist Lucy Lawrence) have made something that is deeply personal, while celebrating their city and challenging the direction of modern guitar music.
Ahead of The Strawberry EP’s worldwide release on March 1, we spoke to vocalist Ben Grey to break down the five-track collection, which you can listen to a day early exclusively here on Ones To Watch. Pre-order the album here.
OTW: Considering your previous releases, how would you consider The Strawberry EP to be a progression of your sound?
BG: I think The Strawberry EP is the closest we’ve come to sounding the way we’ve wanted to in our heads. The band’s sound has been described as “bittersweet” since day one, and while I think we really perfected the bitter in our early work, I don’t think we were able to get sweet until this EP. Melancholia is in our DNA… It’s just musically and thematically what we’re drawn to, but the dream was always to leave the listener and ourselves with feeling of hopefulness. I don’t think we fully figured out how to do that until now.
OTW: When were the songs for the EP written/recorded between, and how did you choose what 5 tracks would make it?
BG: Putting out an EP was definitely not the plan! We’ve been writing for a full length record, but we seem to keep stumbling into recording opportunities. With the exception of “Love Interest,” the EP was all recorded at our friend Clay Blair’s studio Boulevard Recording in Hollywood, in between legs of our tour with Rogue Wave. We would work these new songs out on the road for a few weeks and then come home to track them. That’s why I think they sound so immediate… They’re straight from stage to stereo. And to answer your other question, it wasn’t until Tony Hoffer sent us the final mix of Limelight, that we realized we had finished a collection. The songs had all coalesced so naturally and they truly did capture a moment in the band’s career.
I should also note that the current count of new Dear Boy songs is 35, so I don’t think it’ll be very long until we follow this up with something else.
OTW: Starting off the EP we have the single “Semester”— a song that you’ve previously described as being about “following the moment”. How has the response to the track been so far?
BG: I feel funny telling you that it’s been great, but it truly has been pretty great. If I’m being honest, I am RELIEVED. Whenever you’re in the process of working on something, it’s so small and private. It only belongs to you and you can’t even really imagine it existing in the real world. Any artist will tell you that this whole process is a cocktail of arrogance and earth shattering doubt, so I'm shook constantly. But the fact that Rodney Bingenheimer is playing "Semester" on the radio, our fans like it and my friends who I respect are still taking my calls, I’m finally going to concede that it’s going okay.
youtube
OTW: The track is quite dreamy, though bittersweet lyrically. What came first: the music or the lyrics?
BG: The way it normally works with us is that the music & melody come first., but I’m always scribbling down stuff that gets a reaction out of me… The hope being that one day we’ll be able to marry the nonsense to a piece of music and have it no longer be nonsense.
I’ve used this expression before, but I feel like songwriting is pick-pocketing in the dark. That’s part of why it’s so exciting. "Semester," for example was just a word I had written down in the middle of the night 3 years ago… I had no idea what to do with it, zero context… I just knew that it made me feel something and it was my job to figure out why. It wasn’t until we started writing this particular music that it became clear, oh this song is “Semester,” and I think I know why.
OTW: I know that track was produced by the band w/ contributions from Jackson Phillips (Day Wave)—is this the only track on the record essentially self-produced? And what was it like working with Phillips?
BG: Jackson is incredible. We met last year when our bands did a West Coast tour together and became fast friends. Working with him on "Semester" and "Something Good" was inspiring. A lot of spontaneity goes into his work. The opening swelling noises in "Semester" are a mistake with the tape machine… It was a synth arpeggio sped up all crazy, and he quickly suggested we record it and have it flow throughout the entire song, which I think is partly why "Semester" has its dreamy atmosphere. Feels like exaggerating a memory… And on “Something Good,” Eleisha from Hazel English was hanging out with us in his studio and started humming something to herself during the bridge… Jackson asked her to record what she was doing and she graciously agreed… and now it’s my favorite moment of the song. He’s really good at disrupting your work in the way it needs to be disrupted. Ian Hultquist also produced “Love Interest” with us, but the rest of the record is DB.
OTW: Then we move on to “Limelight,” which seems to further romanticize the valued fleeting time with a lover through stylings that seem suited for youthful romance. What can you tell us about the track?
BG: “Limelight” actually started out this slow, moody ballad, so you’re definitely not wrong about those themes… But as soon as I played an early version for the band, it became clear that’s not what the song was meant to be… And that's what great bands do; they show you what you really mean. Keith, Austin and Lucy heard the song and instinctively knew what to do with it. I’m so thankful to be a part of a project that has such a confident sound and assured chemistry… My version of “Limelight” was small and limited, while Dear Boy’s interpretation was big and thrilling and cathartic. I didn’t realize that the lyrics belonged in a song like that, until I started singing them against this final arrangement.
OTW: Though it’s only the third song, by the time we get to “Something Good,” the EP has effectively avoided “sticking” to one definitive sound. Was it intentional for this EP to showcase your versatility as a band?
BG: I think we’re always chasing things that are exciting and expansive for us, but it wasn’t intentional. This song is the second in a trilogy of waltz’s for the band, (the third is a song called “Die”), but everything about the creation of “Something Good” was surprising to us.
OTW: And did you always know you wanted an acoustic track included? How did “Something Good” come to be?
BG: We didn’t! We actually had studio time booked to work on “Anything At All,” but Keith had the flu and couldn’t track drums... It was Austin’s idea to work it. I wrote “Something Good” with my friend April Bender and it was meant to live on an acoustic guitar, but didn’t really have a sonic identity beyond that. And maybe it’s my own personal bias, but I’m super over bands recording token acoustic songs for their albums, so it was important for us to take it somewhere unexpected. We threw everything we could at it; There are mountains of analog synths, distorted ebows, lap steel, a mille feuille of harmonies, down-tuned conversational elements… it’s very lush and I’m sure totally annoying for our mixer, Tony Hoffer. But it was important for it to not sound like anything else and after days of concentrated studio experimentation, we got this Americana Mazzy Star dark waltz thing. But most important, it sounds like our band and it opens up a lot of portals for us in the future.
OTW: “Anything At All” quickly picks the energy back up with an energizing guitar riff and an incredibly catchy hook. Talk to us about the track and is there a story behind the spoken outro?
BG: “Anything At All” is pure “band.” A song built around a guitar riff, leaning into all the things you want to hear as an audience member… But the lyrics, in Dear Boy fashion, stand in defiance of the major chords. It’s about despair and making the most out of your despair.
While tracking guitars, Austin and I would end our takes with excessive and unnecessary feedback, as one does… I can assure you that it was never meant to stay… but I dunno…one day while I was recording vocals, I just heard a little epilogue in my head… I wrote it down in 2 minutes, recorded it in one take and that was it. I didn’t expect it to stay in, let alone be audible… but the band liked it, Tony Hoffer liked it and I didn’t hate it. Admittedly, I don’t know how I could live without it now.
OTW: “Love Interest,” though the closing track, is probably the most pop-centric – evoking the pop-hook laced energy of 90’s college rock. What influenced the track?
BG: I remember that we were at Keith’s studio and somehow the guitar theme, which sounded like early R.E.M. meets Suede, willed itself into existence. The rest is fuzzy. But I do remember that I left that night with a crudely put together basic track of the music and then spent the following two months writing the lyrics. The song is, in part, about the clumsiness and optimism of love... the joy of being out of your depth. It’s a sentiment I really wanted to get right, so I obsessed over it. I still kinda want to change one or two things.
youtube
OTW: Was it a conscious decision to end the EP with the eldest single from the set, seeing as it was initially released nearly a year ago?
BG: Not so much that it was the eldest, but more that it was the first song written in what we consider to be “The Strawberry Era.” And, really... the message. Like we discussed earlier, leaving the listener with hopefulness for the first time was something appealing to us.
OTW: And finally—why “Strawberry”?
BG: This sounds made up, but I had been dreaming about strawberries for the two weeks before recording “Love Interest.” Every night. The image of a skeleton performing the Hamlet soliloquy to a giant strawberry, dressing in clothes with strawberries sewn into them, running through strawberry rain drops... And because I NEVER remember my dreams, it seemed impossible for it to be coincidence. I don’t think I’m tuned into the will of the universe or anything like that, but I’m also not foolish enough to argue with it.

jamzzz (the not-so-mini edition)
tagged by @blotthis TWICE! TWO WHOLE TIMES!!!!!!!!!! PUBLICLY OUTED BY THEM AS SOMEONE WHO STARTS MEMES BUT DOESN’T FINISH THEM. i tag anyone who wants to do it bc these are definitely fun to read.
----
🎶 blessings (reprise) by chance the rapper
stop what ur fuckin doing and go listen to coloring book. it’s such a good album and i just!!!!!!!!!!!! there are actually two songs called blessings, but this is the one that’s the last song on that album. and it’s just... very comforting and it makes my whole body fill with positivity, and it just... it makes me want to be kind to myself.
this is the weirdest description of a song, but i feel like... i’m being comforted by parents who love me. the soft music and the gospel choir vibes remind me of my mom humming songs to me when i was younger. i feel like my hair is being gently stroked as i fall asleep. i feel like i’m being gently kissed on the temple. meanwhile CHANCE. i feel like he’s giving me a pep talk. i feel like i’m getting comforting words of wisdom from my dad. IT JUST FEELS SO NICE like if a song could hug you and tell you you’re safe and encourage you to keep going.
ps. chance’s singing voice makes me feel like i’m drifting through clouds.
p.p.s. the part where you hear him chuckle during “i used to pass out music, i still pass out music” kill me
🎶 sleepover by hayley kiyoko
firstable, this mv made me gayer than i’ve ever gayed before. secondly, the part where she’s singing “c’mon let’s sleep in my bed (my bed my beeeeed), can i just be in my head with youuu” and she’s harmonizing on the “you” I DK I JUST REALLY LOVE THIS PART and when it comes on in the car i’m always singing the background vocals. speaking of background vocals: when you hear her just saying the “my head my head my head my head” softly in the bg it’s like... MAN idk but i feel like this whole song perfectly encapsulates being alone with your thoughts wrt unrequited love. it’s like one giant echo of all the possibilities of being together that could happen, but don’t. which, to me, is what it feels like to be in your own head. but at least this song is upbeat and catchy
🎶 never got away by colbie caillat
i feel like i should preface all songs with this, but i open at a coffee shop and the first 30 mins to an hour of me being at work can sometimes feel very... 3am feelies. and sometimes on the car ride there or when i’m setting up the pastry case and trying to Wake Up & Be A Person, i will hear a song playing in cafe and it gets me semi-emotional. it’s like my body still thinks this is the middle of the night, even tho it’s actually my morning.
BUT ANYWAYS, I DIGRESS. the first thing i could even hear when this song played was the chorus. the opening verse was too soft to hear across cafe, but the chorus picked up and i just...even without knowing the words it sounded gentle the way soft acoustic songs do, but the vocals have that... desperate pleading sound?? and i mean that as a compliment. idk how to describe it, but when i walked over to the lil speaker and heard the chorus for real on the second run through, i literally felt my heart clench. this song makes me hurt the way sheryl crow’s “favorite mistake” does, but like.............. in a better way.
🎶 안경 (glasses) by IU
i love this song when i first heard it, but i don’t think i actually looked up the translated lyrics until like... months later. i just remember really liking all the dips in the song. it reminds me of story telling. which is hard to explain but-- you know what, i just realized why. okay BEAR WITH ME. so the music reminds me of a horse trot, which reminds me of travelling, right? which........... don’t judge me but THAT reminds me of the singing travelers from that a:tla episode with the badgermoles and star-crossed lovers that met in the tunnel. so anyways there’s ur six degrees of separation from STORYTELLING lmao.
listen to this song and tell me you’re not doing all the “aahhhhhhh ahhhh ohhh ohhhh-- OOooOOooOOoo [DRAMATIC PAUSE].” anyways, lyric meaning aside, i’ve never felt more like a lone lesbian on a horse in the desert than i do while listneing to this.
🎶 love$ick ft. a$ap rocky by mura masa
this is a really good car song! i mean, it’s good for any occasion, but specifically i feel like the song is in its element when it’s blasting from my car on a sunny day while i’m speeding out of the parking lot at work. i actually haven’t listened to a lot of mura masa songs, but the ones i have always remind me of summer. is it bc of the steel pan drumming??????? maybe. probably.
the lyrics are also fun to sing along to. WHICH I FEEL IS A SUMMER SONG REQUIREMENT. quesiton 1: can the song lyrics be sung to loudly and dramatically? if yes, continue to question 2. if not, then ur song ain’t a summer jam. it’s got VOICE DISTORTION (but you actin young WHEN U HELLA GROWN). it’s got the “visit italia, be my senorita” line which honestly i’m stealing for the next girl who dates me. DEBIT CHARGE, KERMIT THE DROG, MARGARITAS????????????????????????? but he should see the way she dance on me, wishin i ain’t have no pants on meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
bonus fact: this song and the Another Round podcast have forced me to consonantly make airhorn noises whit my mouth at all times.
here are some honorable mentions of songs i;ve recently put on repeat and now have 9,230,842,930 plays each in my library:
redbone by childish gambino -- a good song to sensually dance to
faded by julian mae (2on by tinashe remix) -- hip and up beat and great to listen to when you feel like mindlessly jammin

u want distractment? tell me ur top bts songs of 2k16 (however many u want to do!)
ok anon we’re doing this, it took me almost 3 hours but this had to be done right lbr, here are my 7 favourite bangtan songs of 2016
1. hold me tightTECHNICALLY RELEASED IN 2015 BUT THAT DOESN’T STOP ME it was on young forever ok so it counts
y’all, this song. THIS SONG. the ambience sounds, the piano, the staggering digital loops in the bg, the heavy bass line that just kinda takes over your brain, jimin’s high notes, it’s such a great song. taehyung’s voice is so smooth (wish he had more lines in this one), a perfect match for him and he also helped write and produce this song!! im so proud!!!! and jungkook’s backing vocals during hoseok’s verse is so well balanced and just supports the rap in such a fantastic way. this should be everyone’s favourite song because it sure as hell is mine
2. young foreverwhere do i even begin???? first of all this song came into my life when i thought i was gonna lose my dad, so it has really strong emotional value to me. i listened to it a lot and it helped shuttle me through a terrible couple of months last year. young forever is so strong lyrically, and bangtan really let their emotions out with their vocal techniques (hoseok, jimin and jin are probably my favourite parts). namjoon’s voice in the background of yoongi’s verse still sends chills down my spine. the drums?? so good, not too intricate so it doesn’t take focus but you can really feel them in your pulse when they start up during yoongi’s rap. if hoseok’s ho ho was his pick for killer part of 2016, then mine is “yeongwonhi sonyeonigo sipeo nan aah”
3. awakey’all know i’m secretly a jin stan so this should come as no surprise. kim seokjin and accompanying strings? match made in heaven. you can always feel jin when he sings especially when he does that whisper singing thing that he does oh my god stop it andthis song fits him perfectly. it’s very atmospheric and feels like a song he invested a lot into, i know namjoon and hoseok were involved in both the lyrics and composition and the three are a really good team. awake is very well produced and mixed, strings are dangerous because they can get overpowering and then everything turns into a mess but on this track it’s mixed really well, plus the interesting chords progression (G D F# Bm kinda strikes me more as a bridge combination but it works well since it doesn’t stray from that). i love love love the variety jin shows in this song, the slower first verse, hitting those notes in the chorus and bridge, and then the second verse just switches up the pacing completely. 12/10
4. save methis freaking song? is so simple and still so complicated. it’s incredibly clean and crisp soundwise and that makes it easy to pick up all the small details in the composition, like how that booming bass gets to shine in the bridge and the moroder influenced click in the verses. the boys did such a good job harmonising on this one and of the title tracks they released in 2016 save me shows their growth the most in my opinion. i feel like it was overshadowed by fire, which is also a gr9 song but save me is so good
5. stigmai had no idea what to expect from taehyung rogue cypher track when i heard they were all having solos but this wasn’t actually a surprise?? it’s very classic with the jazz influenced bass and piano, the distorted horns and then it mixes in some electronic organ, and tae just comes out with that smooth voice and ofc i was gonna love this song. lyrically it’s very cryptic, it doesn’t tell you much but that doesn’t really surprise me either? the whole song just embodies taehyung somehow. my fav part is probably the subtle electric guitar , it’s so melodious and complements the song perfectly
6. lostah this song is so clever. once again with the pulse infiltrating drums and vocal line gets to shine (more lines for taehyung tho seriously this song fits so well into his range!!), harmonising is smooth as silk and that god damn bridge will kill me one day it’s so good. considering the amount of people who worked on this song it could’ve been so bad lol (idk who to blame for the short dubstep loop that keeps popping up but it’s the only thing i don’t love about this song). there are a lot of small details in the verses that mesh together really well, all these little synth click sequences are on different loops but it’s well mixed so they don’t cancel out each other
7. mamahoseok had such a good year, he’s done heaps and heaps of progress in his musicianship and both mama and intro: boy meets evil reflect that. mama has such a nice retro-still-modern feel to it with the distorted horns and it’s so hard to pull off, musicians often end up tripping over to one side but this is perfect!! that scratching solo comes out like bam and it’s super effectful. you can also tell hoseok got a lot of good vocal training (you always can tbh), he knows his range very well and his voice is so stable. when it comes to the lyrics i’m obviously just melting, i’m my mum’s daughter before i am anything else so songs dedicated to mothers will always strike something in me. the lyrics are really beautiful, like “you created my breath”?? amazing
