Reception of the Grand Condé at Versailles following his victory at Seneffe by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1878. The Grand Condé bows towards Louis XIV as laurel wreaths are laid in his path, while captured enemy flags are displayed on both sides of the stairs. The battle of Seneffe was one of the most brutal of the periods, with one French nobleman writing "we have lost so much by this victory that without the Te Deum and captured flags at Notre Dame, we would believe we had lost the battle."

Expanding on discord server thoughts about Sarcean and the Sun King being siblings.

A sibling to keep by your side and to keep busy because you love them (don’t you?) but they are too ambitious to be harmless. A threat if left unsupervised. A sibling always in your larger than life shadow. In the shadow of the Sun itself. Unseen, never admired as you are but feared (you did that on purpose) so that they cannot triumph over you, so that nobody will choose their side over yours.

A sibling you let do the hard work.

And when they lash out at you, when they try to make a claim on what belongs to you, your cruelty knows no bounds because you are the one that knows them best. They are your sibling after all. So you take what matters most to them.

But with that betrayal, with all of those little betrayals, you forged the weapon that would slay you.

okay, so is Sinclair the Sun King reborn?

we already know the Sun King and the "light" side are not everything that they seem (pure and good and noble and perfect) and that we're missing huge chunks of the story. like....the Sun King using Sarcean because he didn't want to admit to using "shadow" magic, and so when he wanted to get rid of Sarcean, the propaganda he spread against him came in strong, which is why we're seeing such a muddied tale and so many half-truths bandied about through time (like the collar, which does not work the way everyone thought it did etc).

so i'm thinking the Sun King has to be this series' 'big bad'???

and the meaning of the name Sinclair?

and idk about everyone else but i'm seeing possible echoes of a trope Pacat has already used in the past with the Capri trilogy ie benevolent wise good patient ruler turns out to be a manipulative child-killing monster (the Regent) idk i'm thinking out loud here

Louis, count of Vermandois

Hello History nerds, or not! I’d like to bring to your attention that today, November 18th, is the day the Louis (Count of Vermandois) the “disgraced” son of Louis XIV, passed away at age 16. His story is quite tragic, as it is said he was seduced by his uncle’s (Philippe d’Orleans) male lover, the Chevalier de Lorraine, and taken to a homosexual gathering. (I’m not judging, he probably had a lot of fun but big king louis didn’t really like that). So, as said in the parentheses, he was “exiled” by Louis XIV. He continued to fight in battles to win back his father’s love, to no avail 😔. But yeah! Let’s wish him a lovely day in the afterlife!

Versailles II (2001)

I'm currently in an "Ettore and Cyprian are descendants of the Sun King" conspiracy theory spiral, and I found a connection between that theory and Cyprian's name! So, in a previous post, I talked about how Cyprian used to mean "a prostitute, a lewd woman, a harlot" or "lewd, licentious, wanton." And the reason behind this meaning is because Cyprian references the island of Cyprus, where people used to worship Aphrodite, Goddess of Love and Sex, in ancient times. So, how does this connect to Ettore or the Sun King?

Well, the villagers call Ettore "il Diavolo" or the Devil. The Devil is also known as Lucifer, who was also known as the "shining one" or the "morning star." According to Wikipedia, the name Lucifer" corresponds to the Greek names Phosphorus Φωσφόρος, "light-bringer", and Eosphorus Ἑωσφόρος, "dawn-bringer". But Lucifer did not refer to just any star, it was "the Latin name for the morning appearances of the planet Venus." The goddess Venus is the Roman counterpart of the goddess Aphrodite!

So, there are two ways in which this connects Ettore to Cyprian and vice versa. First, because of that connection to Venus/Aphrodite. And second and more obvious, a Star is the symbol of the Stewards. As the last Steward (besides Ettore), Cyprian is referred to as the "last star". But how does this connect to the Sun King?

Well, the Sun itself is a star. Furthermore, the imagery of the morning and the dawn that the name Lucifer brings with it is associated with the Sun. In Greek and Roman mythology, Lucifer was connected to many deities, including Sol, known as Helios in Ancient Greek. Much like Lucifer is known as the "shining one", Helios was often given the epithet of Phaethon, which means "the shining". Lucifer the Shining One and Helios the Shining. Notably, during one of Will's memories as Sarcean, the Sun King is described as "a Helios on a chariot."

So, in a very convoluted way, I have connected Ettore, Cyprian, Lucifer, and the Sun King all together 😅. Also, there's this passage at the end of Dark Heir that subtly suggests the Lady, the Stewards, and more specifically, Cyprian will continue the light bringing of the Sun King:

"The Light?" said Sarcean. "Today I have put out the sun."

"Light is not something you can extinguish," she said. "Even in the darkest night, there is a star."

Will gasped and came back to himself.

Cyprian stood in front of him, holding a sword.

Interestingly, this connection to the Sun King, the Light, and Lucifer also touches the Blood of the Lady. Visander calls Elizabeth "Lightbringer," which is possibly an even more direct reference to Lucifer than Ettore's nickname. There could also be an argument that James/Anharion's "fall from the light" is also a subtle reference to Lucifer. What does this all mean? I can't say. Maybe nothing. Maybe everything 👀

Aneurin Barnard - The Sun King's Son Moodboard II

Louis XIV quickly becomes very fond of his son and even makes him a marquis. However, his son soon finds out that being loved by the king means being envied by everyone else. With every gift and every smile from the King, he gains another enemy. Soon, even Dauphin starts to find their relationship irritating. He decides to teach this wh*re's son a lesson. Thus, the Dauphin plots with one of the Marquis's so-called friends and disgraces him in front of their father. Losing his favour, his title, and even his lover, he leaves Versailles hopeless and desperate.

Music & Dance History

Wild to think about how we don't touch on music or dance history AT ALL in school (unless you sign up for a specific class that isn't even in all schools).

That shit should be REQUIRED in your default history class. People should know and be aware that trap music is a direct result of Reagan's policy choices in the 80s.

People should know that French King Louis XIV was so OBSESSED with ballet that he did it all the time and made people call him the Sun King.

People NEED to know the history of music and dance. It is SO important for EVERY culture.
