the station | chapter 1 / 12
Post-Fallen Order: After months of halfhearted attempts, the Haxion Brood finally gets the jump on the Mantis crew. They drag their prisoners back to Sorc Tormo's new venture, a half-constructed station in a remote asteroid belt, where he has a proposition for them: Greez's debts, erased, as long as the crew helps him track down a troublesome old friend. With hostages, visceral threats of violence, and a former-Imperial staffer consultant pulling the strings, it seems the Brood has the upper hand. But there is one narrow way through: the crew just has to trust each other and hope that the bluff can be called.
chapter 1: shrouded in mist
Cere stops the playback and swivels her chair to face him. “Stick together this time. I’d prefer neither of you be out there on your own.” Cal raises an eyebrow. The planet had seemed peaceful on their flyby at dusk the day before. No signs of life more threatening than the local fauna, and nothing in the system either. “Something on the comms? Or…?” She shakes her head. “Nothing on comms so far. And it’s not that I’m sensing any danger, nothing distinct anyway. Just…a bad feeling. I’ll keep watch on the comms and traffic, and contact you if there’s any danger. Just stay together and be back before dark.” The Mantis crew sets off on an quest to find an archaic device on a misty, peaceful planet -- peaceful, until they’re caught by an ambush. The Haxion Brood’s brought out everything they’ve got this time and the crew might not be able to wriggle their way out of this one…

Posting this first chapter a little early because it happily coincided with @calkestisweek's day one prompt "But First They Have to Catch You" (And They Do!) (<- ok I added that last little part). I've been working on this since last October, honestly had the general concept on the 'vague ideas list' for about 3 years now, and I'm super excited to start posting it. I do want to keep to a Wednesday posting schedule, so after this the next chapter will be posted on May 22nd, and then it will be weekly on Wednesdays from there.
Enjoy! ;-)

If you did a word cloud of all my promo posts, I'm sure the word "excited" would show up biggest, because I'm always SO excited for streams, and shockingly, this one is no exception. Friday, June 21st at 11am EDT, I'm playing The Station by Pidj Sorensen, which is a GMless game about the impacts of places and people on each other.
I'm so stoked about this game because each guest for the stream is an extremely talented game designer, as well as being delightful people. I was extremely excited when each of them said yes to appearing on this stream. More info on each player below the cut!

Alicia has written many excellent games, but the one I've personally played the most is Basic Witches, which I've streamed several times! Alicia expressed an interest in playing something on my stream a little while ago and I was elated. They're great at designing small, specific games, so I can't wait to see what they do with the small, specific game we'll be playing!

I first played with Ella a few years ago in a streamed Mausritter game and from that moment on became a fan. As a roleplayer, she narrates beautifully, and creates characters that you immediately fall in love with. As a game designer, she creates evocative, lush worlds filled with juicy roleplay opportunities.

I was incredibly lucky to have played a one-shot of Good Society with Poorna as the facilitator last year, and knew I needed to have her on my stream, 9.5 hour time difference be damned! Poorna is so warm and funny, as well as being a generous scene partner who sets up moments for others incredibly well. Her games are also a delight!
The Station is a simple game, and for this stream I wanted a group of players who would take ownership of the world of the game and fill it with beautiful, melancholy, strange things. I know this group will do just that. Also, I'll be there! (I never make a player promo for just myself, because it feels redundant. But as usual, I'm playing too!)

20 Years Ago Today: The Station Night Club Fire
20 years ago today (February 20, 2003) there occurred one of the worst nightclub fire in American history. That’s relatively recent history for me to be covering on this blog, but it’s always has personal meaning for me. I come from Rhode Island. That drum and bugle corps I wrote about just a few days ago was based in West Warwick, the town where this disaster happened. The people affected by…

The world is oftentimes such an ugly place, but sometimes it can be so beautiful.
Like, when two choirs, one from Croatia and the other from Zimbabwe, met on the opposite sides of a Lisbon subway station and both sang to each other.
I unfortunately do not know what the Zimbabwe children choir sang to them (although it was so beautiful), but the Croatian klapa Kastav sang 'Kuća puna naroda' (a house full of people).
And let my reward be a house full of people, my life, give me a voice, so I can embrace you with songs.

epilogue: homecoming
“There’s been no suspicious traffic in the section since we arrived,” Cere says patiently, from her spot on the sofa. “And even if there was, I can handle it.” “On your own? While watching our defenseless—” “Come on, Greez, who are you calling defenseless? I can help.” Cal is stretched out on the couch beside Cere, broken leg extended and resting on a stack of cushions. He still does look pale and drawn, melted into the sofa with an immovable heaviness, and not that Greez is going to say it, but he does look a bit defenseless. Cal seems to realize the picture he makes because, after a moment, he says, “Well. Probably.” Everyone goes home. Meanwhile, Saw’s Partisans enjoy their new home base and a prisoner reveals important intel...
