lapis isn't human, so does he have any particular non-human abilities? any sort of magic or maybe different senses? or even weaknesses humans don't have?

Yup, Lapis is spiritkin, a being descended from a strange beings of magic and nature and often sharing their ancestor's features like, well, blue skin and horns. Spiritkin tend to be natural lightning rods for magic, and their presence often can interfer with rituals and runes, so wizards don't like them too much lol.

Lapis specifically descended from a trickster spirit, so he inherited the natural ability for things like illusion magic and shapeshifting. He's also picked up a lot bits and bobs of wizard magic in his studies. There have been stories about people in his family that had fully grasps their spirit ancestor's magic - of music, trickery, and madness - and gained great power but, uh, mad in the process. So Lapis prefers to avoid that, thank you very much.

Even though he's technically part spirit, he's still affected by anti-spirits or charms or spells. Most times it's just pain in the ass, keeping him from physically entering a store, but sometime there are spells meant to like control spirits that has an effect on him too. On the other hand, spiritkin used to be considered bridges between the magic folk and the mortals, so every once in a while like an older magical being will drag Lapis kicking and screaming into some dispute. There's a reason Lapis prefers cities lol.

As a kid I was never scared of creepy internet images. Those “spooky” images of silhouettes lurking in dark spaces were a comforting sight. The edited photos of long-haired ghosts standing at the end of a hall felt like looking right into a mirror.

The undead and cryptid creatures always felt more relatable to me than humans could ever hope to be. Even as a child.
