#The Signature Move

Diviak’s sports romance balances deep, emotional topics with heart fluttering moments. 

“The Signature Move” follows Logan Beckett and Averie “Ava” Laurier, two athletes who are forced to share a rink. Both are determined to ignore each other, but Waybrook isn’t a big enough town to stop their paths from colliding. When the captain of the Waybrook Winter Wolves hockey team and the world champion skater clash, it’s only a matter of time before anger harbored over divvied rink time melts into passion. 

This book has everything I love in a romance: dual pov, rivals to lovers, small town, and slow romantic development. When I say this is a slow burn, it is a slowwww burn. The beginning took a little bit to pick up, but once Logan and Ava finally gave in to their attraction, I could not get enough of their dynamic as a couple. They are characterized so differently with Ava being the sweetest, sunshine girl and Logan being more guarded and stoic. Their opposite personalities compliment each other and make their rivals-to-lovers romance more satisfying. 

I really appreciated the emphasis on found family in this book. Both characters experience abuse at the hand of a parent that causes anxiety and in Ava’s case, an eating disorder. Throughout the novel, Logan and Ava build a family of their own with each other and the friends/coaches/teammates they forge meaningful connections with in their close knit town. One qualm I had with this book is that not all the side characters are fleshed out—therefore I wasn’t as invested in them and their own plot lines—but I did like the roles they played in Logan and Ava’s story.

ARC Review: The Signature Move

The Signature Move is the first contemporary romance of Cassandra Diviak’s that I’ve delved into and I have to say I’m not in any way disappointed. While I wouldn’t call ‘Sports Romance’ my preferred genre, Diviak is able to bring characters to life with a vivacity that grabs you immediately.

The Signature Move explores themes of domestic violence, parental neglect and emotional abuse, eating disorders, and the worst kind of ex-boyfriend, but with a light, delicate, touch that handles the difficult subject matters with care and careful consideration.

Woven over and through these heavy topics is the kind of beautiful romance I’ve come to expect from Cassandra, bringing a much needed lightness to the story, despite it’s origins within the bounds of an enemies-to-lovers trope. Logan and Ava capture your heart quickly, and their rivalry on the rink will have you rooting for one, or both of them sooner rather than later!

Alongside our main couple is a cast of diverse characters that are a delight to get to know, and gave a warm, underlying, ‘Found Family’ feel to the town of Waybrook.

Overall, a 10/10 read from the wonderful Cassandra Diviak!

what if i wrote a “shen yuan transmigrates into a wife” oneshot but the whole premise is based on the song “gone, i’m gone” from hadestown and its overall theme is wanderlust and freedom and it starts out as Shen Yuan settling into life in the palace and trying to avoid harem drama and thinking he can just live with his head down for the rest of his new life, only to be hit with a sudden intense yearning to explore his new world the likes he’s never felt before. What if he was sickly in his last life. What if he spent his entire last life indoors. Trapped between four walls. What if love is not a gilded cage. What if he begins clawing at the walls of his enclosure, desperate to escape because he wants to live, god please let him live. He can’t do this again. What if he spent months preparing for his escape and in that same breath getting the attention of some of the other wives around him because he has changed and it makes them wary. what if he got binghe’s attention as he is wont to do. What if he left. What if Shen Yuan was born with a bottomless pit in his stomach and a gaping maw in his chest. What if he was starving. What if he was starving for the world around him.
