scopOphilic_micromessaging_1219 - scopOphilic1997 presents a new micro-messaging series: small, subtle, and often unintentional messages we send and receive verbally and non-verbally. (2024)
This set of images is from Luna Luna which is currently on display at The Shed in NYC. It's an art carnival that originally premiered in 1987 in Hamburg Germany. Then was lost to time until recently. It includes commissioned works by Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, etc. It's up through February 23 in case you want to check it. I love shiny things! The Vessel and The Shed. We'd just finished our tour of The High Line when we got there. I don't know what exactly The Vessel is… but it was this incredibly shiny and distracting, sort of beehive-looking reflective structure. I stood and stared at it for quite a while. 😍😯 The Shed, it turns out, is a center for arts.

LUNA LUNA The Shed New York
As the chair swing ride spins faster and faster with the unknown theatrical and whimsical carnival-themed music in the background and the halo-shaped light installations hung in the center of the space as well as light on the side walls that emits heats rhythmically functioning as digital fireworks, Kenny Scharf’s graffiti-like paintings on the central cylinder of the swing ride and monstrous multi-eye cartoon figures standing on top of the swing rotate, flashing before the viewers’ eyes at a moderate speed, allowing the viewers to see enough of it but not fully grasp the essence, alluring them to keep watching. Next to the swing ride was Jean-Michel Basquiat’s small-sized muted cream-white Ferris wheel featuring 7 passenger cabins revolving with lights on the brims of the wheels. Basquiat’s signature style paintings and words were all over the rims and the circular frame of the Ferris wheel. LUNA LUNA staff members wearing cute monster-like cartoon figure costumes or holding a rod with a stuffed butterfly at the end, waiting to subtly surprise the visitors on their heads or gently kiss their faces.
This ecstatic festive scene at the Shed only reveal a small part of the fantasyland recreated from the 1987 LUNA LUNAamusement park project, which originally was conceptualized by curator and artist Andre Heller, who then invited over 30 artists including David Hockney, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring etc. to design the games, rides and attractions at the amusement park.
What makes LUNA LUNA great was never about how this is the fantasy or dream of everyone’s childhood or reigniting the imagination or the conflux of avant-garde and street art with amusement rides. It is the fact that art steps down from the pedestal of being admired and worshiped in a constrained space and instead rushes into and embraces its most rudimentary yet powerful forms as daily accessible and entertaining objects that anyone can associate with. Human beings are the product of their environment, as the natural, social, economic, and cultural surroundings one is cultivated and immersed in, even for a few seconds or a minute, leave a trace in our memory, constituting a part of us that is so distinct and irreplaceable. LUNA LUNA elevated the amusement park, a space meant to create joy for people of all ages, by adding aesthetically pleasing, valuable, and culturally enriched artistic elements into the design of the rides and games, fostering an environment that will not only bring joy but heal, nurture, and influence the viewers in ways they may not even be aware of.
LUNA LUNA at the Shed in New York certainly successfully recreated the fantastical scenes of the original amusement park, but it was far from its original purpose, feeling more like a commercial art project, as viewers were not allowed to take any rides but only to observe from a distance.  As I watched the swing ride slow down, the music gradually fading into silence, my eyes glistened with the faint shimmer of heartfelt emotion. A girl came up to me and said, "You know what is the thing that makes me feel most sad? There is still dust on the seats."
