How do you think Five would feel about Andy Weir’s The Martian? I can’t decide if it would be triggering or if he’d get a kick out of it

I have to admit I have never read The Martian, so I can't speak much to how I think Five would react to it. From the little I know about it, the main guy has a rather upbeat attitude around his solitude and having to figure out survival on Mars, right? The snippets I've read have had great humor to them, at least. Based solely on that (and that I saw the movie once), I think it's a book Five would overall enjoy and find parts about figuring out survival relatable, and be able to read Exactly Once. Just a little too close to home for any repeat visits to that one.

Anyone who has actually read The Martian and has much more informed opinions on this feel free to chime on in.

astro thoughts - short n sweet: all about mars

Mars in 1st house - These individuals have a strong presence to their aura. These people could be workaholics as far as being in the gym goes. They could have a lot of energy to get things done so they can seem pretty intimating around people who don't have strong martian energy. They can be scapegoated because their boldness tends to rub people off the wrong way.

Mars in the 2nd house - A passion for getting the things they want with little to no effort. Hard work pays off. They dont have time to waste on mundane things, they simply want to relax but it seems too much for them sometimes. I say for this group, give yourself that time to chillax for a bit... the world aint what it seems sometimes.

Mars in the 3rd house - Could have a lot of outbursts from time to time, they feel things just a little differently than others and could be pretty opinionated. They have a lot of use for people who can debates with them on topics. They need someone who can go toe to toe with them at times, or else they'll get bored. They are very fast learners. Could also have a thousand hobbies because none of them could keep them occupied enough, and thats okay.

Mars in the 4th house - Could be overstimulated with family issues as this placement can make them the scape goat/black sheep. They are not afraid to say whats on their mind. There could also have been volatile experiences growing up in the house, so their a little open to having gentle partners/friendships because the toxic environment could have left them strifled.

Mars in the 5th house - These people like to live life on the edge, they need something to get them out of their racing mind. There quick learners just like the 3rd house babes, and they need someone who can match their fly. Could be a sex maniac with this placement. Needs someone who they can be passionate with.

Mars in the 6th house - WORKAHOLICS... please. just get some rest. What I love about this placement is that they NEVER STOP UNTIL THEY GET WHAT THEY WANT. They are powerhouses for sure. This is probably one of the best placements to have with mars because 1. its in its rightful house (it is a ruler of scorpio). They're sex appeal is powerful. It will have anyone dropping to their knees. They are psychologically aware of people and their intentions and they can use this to their advantage. Dark feminine energy is a strong aspect for this placement. I could go on, but decided to keep it cute for now lol.

Mars in the 9th house - May have a tendency to travel outside of their homeland at some point in their life. This is necessary for their growth as an individual. They need to be alone more than usually so they can see the world from a different point of view. They are very intelligent creatures and give their all to know more than what they've been given in their short time span on this earth. They have a gift at teaching people how to navigate life through their own lense. Its a difficult path to say the least, because they always have to be confident in the face of trouble. But they always come abck out with ease.

Mars in the 10th house - Strong presence. Very practical nature. Has issues with the public eye from time to time. Could master the art of thought and can handle any situation most would crumble in. The life they lead isn't for the weak. It seems like they have an arrow on their back from time to time, but to no avail they use the energy to their advantage at some point. Great leaders, could have jealous friends/associates around them so they must be cautious.

Mars in the 11th house - LIke their friends in the tenth house, they are also really good at leadership. In their friend groups they can be considered the 'alpha' or the person who tends to plan out things or just knows what to do in general. It reminds me of blossom in the power puff girls to say the least. Their capable of taking on goals and commitments most people probably couldn't take. Just be careful you don't wanna make them mad. They can have a lot of disputes with friends and associates for the wrong reasons.

Mars in the 12th house - Mind over matter. Thats their theme. They could have a lot of issues with people and this could seem out of no where. A lot of hidden enemies with this placement :( It seems like no one likes them but they have a raw special energy to them thats hard to ignore. A lot of people do want to be around them but for some reason they can sort of despise them and it could be something subconscious and this is where a lot of the hidden hate comes from. This group has to be more open to the heart than most because its easier to shut back down after always being around people who use them for their personal gain.

DCxDP AU where Dani fakes being an alien.

Dani's obsession with travel also left her with a desire to know more about the places she couldn't travel to, like Krypton and Mars. Considering the vast majority of both those populations are dead, it was easy enough for her to befriend some ghost aliens. From them she learns about their culture and language.

At some point one of her new friends jokes that her ghost powers kind of function like a mix of Kryptonian and Martian biology. She laughs. It is just a joke.

At least till she is in danger. The GIW finally found her. She is scared and desperate and tells a lie. Dani screams out, "Superman, if you can hear me, I am Kryptonian too and they are trying to capture me. Please help."

She doesn't actually expect this plan to work. It was a last ditch hail Mary. She figured she would (fully) die here, but even if he was on the other side of the earth he hears her and comes to her rescue.

But see, actions have consequences and now that she is safe she needs to keep the lie going. It is a good thing her alien ghost friends are willing to help her create a fabricated story about how a Martin and a Kryptonian managed to get to earth, have a child, and for some reason aren't around anymore.

It is not an ideal situation, but being an alien is legal while being a ghost isn't, so what's a girl to do? If there is one thing a child who travels the world alone knows how to do, it is lie and bullshit their way through any situation.

Meanwhile, Clark and J'onn are thrilled and fighting each other for custody.

Solar return observations- Part 5

If you have Saturn in 12th then sleep well, that is....if you manage to fall asleep in the first place. (I have it this year and IT SUCKS, I have literally not been able to sleep, I've tried every single tea, every meditation, white noises, NOTHING WORKS, I also have mars in 12th, so I'm just fucking tired the whole time)

North node in 2nd is an indication that you'll start earning money for the very first time in your life, it doesn't have to be a full time job (I have seen this a lot of times when a person starts working for the first time, like a part time job or something. You get to experience what it's like to have "your" money)

I'm pretty sure that an astrologer has already said this, but I don't remember who, so I'll say it again, Uranus in 3rd means getting a new cycle, bike or car, basically anything that helps you with short distance travelling. (One of my friends have it this year and he already had a cycle but it got stolen and he just decided to buy a car, since he has money saved up for one)

This is very specific, but if you have Jupiter in 9th/ 11th then GO GET THAT RECOMMENDATION LETTER. (If you are graduating or planning to get a new job, this year is good for that. The years in which my sister, my friends or I have had this, our teachers, bosses or colleagues were SO impressed with us and we got really good reference letters, we slayed so hard in those years)

Vertex in 6th can be a VERY busy and exhausting year. Too many responsibilities and not enough knowledge of how to deal with them. (I had this the year in which I started living alone, It was also squaring my moon and dude, TW the suicidal ideation was STRONG. I wish I could give some sort of an advice but I don't know what to say, you just need to learn how to deal with the problems as they come)

Mercury square Neptune....the level of miscommunication is insane. (One of my closest friends has this and she...I love her but she's being very annoying. We were on a trip and she was talking to some people, so me and my other friend, we started clicking pictures, cuz we didn't want to disturb her and she comes up and says "why are you guys doing this without me, why are you not including me, if you don't wanna hang out with me anymore just say it" like GIRL) if you have this, don't start unnecessary drama, communication will be difficult so just stay quiet

Chiron in 12th is one of the shittiest years in regards to mental health, I hate this. (My friends have had this before and it's there in my 2025 solar return chart and I'm already dreading it. Everything bad that can happen...happens. I don't care what anyone says, this placement is just pure EWWWW and NOTHING can convince me otherwise)

Aries in 8th can be the year in which you lose your virginity (If you WANT to) I know quite a few people who had this the year they lost their V-card. (It's completely okay if you don't though, take your time and do it with a person who you trust and love, no pressure)

Mars in 9th is such a good placement for travelling and studies. (I had this in my 1st year of college, I remember I was so excited, studying was very easy, I loved learning new things and stuff, it was very nice. I was also travelling a lot, discovering new places. I had a lot of energy, really fun year)

Sun in 7th is a great placement if you want to work with others. (My mom has it this year and her business is ON FIRE, every time she has a meeting, it goes so well and she always gets a better deal than what she expected) this is a really good time for working with others, in partnerships. If you are a student, then you're going to do especially well in group projects.

You know the book/movie The Martian? What if that happened in the Earth and Unicron Au? A NASA mission gone wrong gets an astronaut stranded on Mars' surface with no way home or even to communicate with Earth, at least those with NASA, not Earth herself. Would Mars want to help or hinder this poor lost soul that just wanted to go home? I'm pretty sure Earth wouldn't appreciate that one of her children died on Mars and he could have prevented it. Though if I'm being honest, with how Mars' citizens died, I doubt he would try to get the little fleshy killed.

A quick little fic was required for this ask.

Being the first astronaut to be sent to Mars should have been an honor, an accomplishment just as great as the Moon landing. But Gabriel always knew deep down that something was bound to go wrong. Something  always went wrong. The Russians sent dogs into space first for a reason. NASA however didn’t seem to care as much for human life now that they supposedly had space travel down. They wanted someone on Mars before China could get a man up there, and they were willing to go to any lengths to do so.

Gabriel wasn’t the first pick for the Mars mission. There had been two others chosen before him, but Abigail Knight had dropped out of the running for unknown reasons. Her runner up, Horace Gail, had been removed from the mission after he was discovered drugged to high heavens in his apartment a few weeks before he was meant to get on the rocket. That left Gabriel, the only other astronaut who actually knew the controls and went through the year-long preparation program to get used to living on Mars via simulation. 

He wasn’t exactly thrilled to be given the mission. Sure, he always wanted to travel to other worlds, but going with a crew that hadn’t run the simulation just felt risky. Personally, he would have preferred to dog out of the mission entirely and let the honor of first landing go to another astronaut if it meant he’d have a fully trained crew with him.

But again, NASA really wanted their man on Mars. So despite the risks, Gabriel found himself suited up, strapped into the rocket, and thrown into space. It was surreal. And quite frankly, the trip went far faster than he expected. Supposedly the science guys on the ground had made some sort of breakthrough that allowed for short range ‘skips’ as they called them. The shuttle would have momentary bursts of speed that allowed it to skip over huge portions of space without burning excess fuel. There was a lot of science involved, and Gabriel liked to think he knew his tech, but looking at the engines, he didn’t know what the hell was going on.

Strange blue liquid powered the whole thing. He was told not to touch it, and he obeyed without question. None of the crew knew what it was, or what all the strange ‘skips’ were about. But of course, NASA’s mission came first. So Gabriel wasn’t given time to question. The moment they were within range of Mars, a message was sent back and Gabriel was loaded up with an American flag and the express mission of getting to the surface in one piece and plopping it down. The looks he got from the crew indicated they really didn’t care if he made it back or not.

Very comforting indeed. This was why he would have preferred a team who’d run the simulation.

“Ready Gabriel?” The woman in the control room spoke through Gabriel’s in-built communicator as he stood before the hatch leading to the void outside. He sighed before replying.

“Ready. Let’s get this show on the road.” The woman laughed over the link. Gabriel never bothered to learn her name. It would have been nice to know now that he thought about it.

No time for regrets. His grand mark on humanity’s history was before him.

“Good luck! Doors opening in 3, 2, 1-” The woman’s voice was cut off as the hatch opened. Gabriel expected the rapid pull into space as the hatch decompressed, but it was still startling to be dragged toward the surface of Mars by the drone NASA assigned. Once upon a time, Astronauts got to the surface in pods. But in an attempt to save resources or something along those lines, now drones were the way forward.

Gabriel patiently endured his descent to the planet’s surface, his suit absorbing the worst of the shock as he adjusted to the gravity. He made a show of his first few steps, knowing the crew was watching from above. He planted the flag, repeated his scripted words, and then looked back up to the ship. He activated the link, trying to signal for pickup. All he got in return was static.

“Hey, console lady, what the hell is going on up there? I’m ready for pickup already.” Gabriel hit his communicator again, but no matter how hard he tried to get the signal through, he got nothing back. He watched on in growing horror as the shuttle hovered above him, and then slowly, its thrusters activated.

“Wait! Hold on! I’m still down here!” He screamed, not caring if his oxygen levels were in peril or not as he tried to wave his arms. Something had to have gone wrong. System failure perhaps? They couldn’t be leaving him. That wasn’t part of the simulation or NASA’s plan.

No response. The shuttle sped off, ‘skipping’ into the distance. Gabriel felt cold dread settle in his very soul. He ran through a thousand reasons why something might have gone wrong or why they might have been leaving him, but in the end, after about an hour of warring with himself… he knew the reason.

He was the dog sent into space. He was NASA’s little test to see if travel was safe and possible. They were leaving him behind. 

Gabriel cursed, he screamed, uncaring of how much oxygen he had left. He was going to die. He’d been left to rot on a world so far from home that Earth was practically a blimp in the distance. After everything he’d done in his life, this was how it was all going to end.

Alone.

Abandoned.

Why did the world despise him so-

“Hello!” Gabriel froze in his lamentations. He stood up from where he was seated on the ground sorrowfully regretting everything and looked around. There wasn’t a person, but there was… a rover?

“You look rather lost! Dad sent me out to see if I can help! Aunty is quite upset about this whole mess!” The rover was green, a rather bright hue. Its light glowed red, highly unusual. Gabriel didn’t recognize it, at least not at first. But soon enough, he began to remember the design. The rover was an old model, one of the ones sent out in the early 2000s. The paint was different, and last he recalled, the rover didn’t have any pre-recorded voice lines. But he knew this model, and it was clearly the one and only Spirit.

“Sheesh, you are going to run out of air at this rate! Let’s get you inside until Aunty can get Uncle Moon to send someone out to get you!” The rover rolled closer, prompting Gabriel to step back instinctually. He didn’t have time to run before the rover changed. Its wheels compacted, its entire frame contorted in a series of swift and smooth motion. In an instant, he found himself dwarfed by some type of robot, one which smiled down at him with bright red eyes, eager perhaps.  Gabriel knew for a fact NASA would have never let something like this rot out on Mars. It had to be something new, something strange and potentially dangerous.

“Oh hell no-!” He attempts to run, but the former rover grabbed him before he could and held him gently, almost like a precious stone. Gabriel was too startled to fight as the thing he knew to be Spirit quickly began walking with him in hand.

“Don’t be scared little guy! Dad will get this all sorted out!” Spirit smiled gleefully, its voice ringing out deeply but strangely like a child. Gabriel couldn’t speak, not as he saw more of the robotic beings approaching. There were seven others, and one by one, he noted their designs.

Sojourner, Marie Curie, Curiosity, Opportunity, the chinese model, and a few others. Each walked on two legs, each smiled, and each and every one of them regarded Gabriel with childlike interest. 

“Dad! We got him!” The rover held Gabriel up, grinning ear to ear, not that it had ears. Gabriel for his part screamed as the ground shifted like some sort of hangar bay, revealing a passage down into the very ground. He floundered as all the rovers walked into the passage, not at all afraid. Spirit soothed Gabriel with a few hushed words.

“Shh… Uncle Moon will send a drone to get you soon. You can stay with him and his colony until Auntie figures out how to get you back without trouble! So don’t worry Cousin! Everything is going to be alright!” Gabriel gawked as he was carried into the passage. He had no words, all he could do was stare in awe as something straight out of a sci-fi film played out before him.

“Yes Earth, your explorer is safe. My little ones are keeping him company.”

“Good. Take care of him for me. I will try to reach out to Primus’s chosen to see if he might aid me.”

“Of course.”

I think a lot of people get confused with Mars and Venus. People say that men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but I would say that men are Sun and women are Moon. Men lead with ego represented by the sun. They pride themselves with being King. Moon represents nurture and intuition. That is why women are known throughout many cultures to be a gateway to the spiritual. Why we call it a “women’s intuition” Women tend to be more into astrology. Mars and Venus, however, aren’t completely specific to any gender because both genders have Martian and Venusian energies in them. All creatures can express Mars & Venus. Both positively & negatively.

Mars represents anger, aggression, passion & sexuality. The only reason it was associated with men was because of what patriarchy taught us. Men were the only ones allowed to be sexual, passionate, aggressive, and angry. Even though women feel these same emotions as well. Venus represents love, sensuality, marriage, beauty & harmony. Women are supposed to be beautiful, sensual & non confrontational. Women are told they have to marry & have kids or they’ll “die alone & miserable.” Any men with these characteristics are seen as less masculine. In actuality, women can be sexual, dominant & express anger. Men can be sensual, nurturing, and appreciate love & beauty. Both genders have masculine and feminine energies. And it’s important to keep them balanced.

Venus is also not as soft & gentle as people think, especially like what is taught in western astrology. No hate, they have the wrong perception of Venus. Venus is far more cruel than it lets on. Venus is actually much like Mars as they were once lovers. Thought to be polar opposites but have more in common. Mars is outwardly aggressive, but internally soft. Whereas, Venus is outwardly soft but internally aggressive & cruel. Venus is the hottest planet, scorching & inhabitable. That is why all Venus Nakshatras sit in fire rashis- Sagittarius, Leo and Aries. Also, all of the Venus nakshatras, Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purvashadha, are ugra or fierce. Representing aggression, assertiveness, cruelty. Which can be ruthless, hurting others in the process. Venus is hedonism especially in Purva Ashadha. Venus will do anything in the pursuit of pleasure and passion, even if destructive, morally corrupt & wrong. Hitler, for example, had a Bharani Venus AK. You’re Atmakraka is your soul’s desire. His soul desire was beauty and pleasure and he did anything even hurting and killing millions of people just to achieve it. Venus/Shukra in Vedic is also the teacher of Demons, but people think Venus is an innocent and submissive planet, really it can function as a malefic. If most women were Venus, the world wouldn’t be how it is now. Us women wouldn’t be in the predicament that we are in.

Men are taught that they are superior like the sun, blinding others with its light. Society teaches men that the ultimate move is to be like the Sun. That’s why men & patriarchy are so drawn to solar men. Women are taught to be like the moon hidden, nurturing, seen but not heard, accusing us of being overly emotional. That we aren’t logical. That were not fit to lead only the sun(men) should. Not to say the moon is weak It’s just calculative & secretive. Naturally, Men= Mars, Women=Venus, but society & patriarchy trains us to be Men= Sun, Women=moon. What Claire Nakti called the “ideal women” nakshatra or favorite wife of Chandra is Rohini, ruled by the moon, but sitting in a rashi ruled by Venus. But, like I said, Venus is far more cruel and ambitious for it’s goal. That is why most women killers are usually not caught. In reality. Women need to start being more like Venus.

Alright a little thing.

It’s not the Justice League that comes to help Danny protect Amity Park after Pariah Dark is felled, well not technically the League.

The new Ghosts that walk the streets, that spar with the living and dead, that haunt the Fenton Portal in such numbers that the town approved an expansion for the Fentons’ Lab. These Ghosts are Kryptonian, Martian, Thanagarian, they Gail from every world with a concept of protection and kindness, they wear the colors and uniforms they served in while alive, whether that be with the crests of Kryptonian houses, Thanagarian warriors, or the Martian Military. They all now bear Phantom’s seal, and it’s during one of Phantoms attempts to get away from Superman somewhere above Pennsylvania that Superman meets one such warrior.

The field he follows Phantom into is marred only by the Ghost Boy’s impact crater, he hadn’t meant to hit him that hard but anything less would not have stunned him.

“Surrender Phantom, there’s no where to run.” The boy looks terrified as he scrambled to get up, staggering and falling twice.

“No, no I’m sorry please, just, just leave me alone!” Superman approaches, caution in mind as he closes to get the inhibitor cuffs on Phantom, only for a pair of figures appear between them, the taller one, wearing a HAZMAT suit crouches and collects Phantom while the second stubs Superman.

It’s a soldier of Krypton, with matte white painted armor of a militiaman, and the House of El’s crest displayed on their chest. “What? Who are you?”

The soldier turns, and the helmets sight being focused on him gives him pause. “Will you pursue him?” Superman blinks at the question.

“What? Yes, he needs to come to the Watchtower to- URGH” The soldier was faster, Clark realized, faster and better trained. Before Clark could even argue he’d been thrown hard enough to break the sound barrier, and when he twisted in the air, trying to recover, he was smashed again, and he realized they had flown out over the Atlantic.

Who was this guy?

As Superman turned to face the direction he’d last been hit from he noticed that the Soldier hadn’t followed, he was gone, but in his last place was a fluorescent green balloon with a box tied to it. When Clark opened that box on the ground it had two items in it, a patch, obviously a military one from Krypton, and a note.

[Leave the boy be Kal-El, we dead do not take kindly to him being harassed by a government that wants him vivisected]

Clark knew one thing, he had to bring this to the League, and tell them of the Soldier.

The Martian Women: A Warrior's Heart

Now more than ever we see questioned the humanity and dignity of women who do not fit the stereotype of what they are supposed to be, look, sound, or act like. Such cases like Imane Khelif are heartbreaking to witness, specially considering the way these false allegations overshadow the efforts and hard work behind her skills, even more so now as an Olympian.

Imane has her Moon and Mars in Sidereal Scorpio, and the themes of others trying to take control of the narrative of her life and existence is ridiculous and overwhelming. On top of it, her Mercury and Jupiter are both in Aries. She is a huge embodiment of how the Martian experience tends to play out.

They are the individuals who deal with the consequences of being "too much" simply by not being afraid of voicing their opinions, of their appearance, or any other aspect regardless of how conflictive it might be. They have and endless source of power to pursuit their passions, and they often achieve as long as they their ego on check.

Childhood years consisted of a push and pull between not being enough of any of the polarities. Often, attracting unwanted attention and different degrees of aggressive/hostile behaviors (spoken, actions, etc). They learn to project outwardly the results of withstanding all of those experiences, and paradoxically are blamed for having a natural hostile response to a hostile environment or actions.

After being forced to repress their hurt, anger, and valid emotions they learn to channel it towards a goal because their nature (Aries and Scorpio) is to plan, analyze, execute, and repeat all over again. They are the Valkyries, Amazonians, etc who learn collectively how to fend for themselves in all aspects outside of patriarchal laws or standards.

From a historic and folklore perspective, Valkyries were associated and often accompanied by ravens or horses which matches perfectly the nature of Ashwini (horses) and Bharani (crows are similar to ravens) which are both in Aries. These mythical warriors guided souls to their depiction of heaven, and Krittika is ruled by the Sun + has a priestly caste. On different levels of humanity we've always had women who take their necessary place with violent, aggressive, and chaotic driven actions as much as men, yet its forced to suppression the most.

In terms of contemporary entertainment, many other concepts of female warrior or heroic/strong/independent female characters from all eras have Martian placements. This is not to say that Mars is the only representation for these arechetypes, but in terms of characters who have a really grim and/or dark past, it fits very well. Other planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter) also have their own depiction of cunning female led roles but their background, characteristic, etc are all different. I will expand with other planets on a different post.

Uma Thurman has her Sun in Aries (Bharani).

Summer Glau from the Firefly series and its continuation movie Serenity has her Moon in Aries (Ashwini).

Saoirse Ronan has her Moon and Venus in Aries (Bharani).

Gal Gadot as Wonder Women has her Sun in Aries (Bharani)

Lucy Liu (Sun in Scorpio (Anuradha/Jyestha) and Moon in Aries (Bharani), Cameron Diaz (Moon in Aries, within Krittika) from Charlie's Angels.

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow has her Sun in Scorpio (Anuradha)

They function perfectly well alone and also within a group as as long as there is mutual respect. Society doesn't seem to know yet how to properly behave and treat individuals like them. Martian handle themselves in such a raw and powerful form that those who have weak morals, will power, inner strength, courage, or self expression regardless of gender might feel as if they are being personally attacked.

Now, it is good to keep in mind the distinction between deliberate attack or self defense. Due to previous trauma related with heavy power struggles they can easily feel wounded, and will could show an exaggerated or uncontrolled form of aggression.

It could also simply be intentional because both signs (Aries & Scorpio) tend to become more resentful or comfortable using violence if they understand is fair or justified. They LOVE "female rage". Every film, piece of literature, song, or form of art related to anger, disconformity, sadness, rage, wickedness, and other chaotic expressions connect with their suppressed darkness.

It allows them to fantasize of a world where women are able to demonstrate their anger freely without judgement, specially when justified and valid. They understand other women beyond the nature of their caged self under patriarchal standards, but the downside is that others do not connect easily with them.

This is why despite being the real underdogs of many empowering movements they are often lonely, alienated, punished, and treated poorly. It’s the most noticeable with Scorpio rashi, specifically Jyestha where they naturally attract envy, jealousy, and ill wishes the most. They are the ruthless Scorpios who don't really care about turning off their moral compass if it means achieving their goals. They are often only loyal to their vision and those who fit in it.

It is essential for Martian women to maintain a healthy management of their anger and learn how to release it in meaningful ways. Any type of exercise (gym, cardio, pilates, yoga, etc) or sports can become one of the most common channels to fuel their bodies and release heavy emotional overloads. Staying in touch with their root and sacral points by doing activities that promote you to feel safe, nurtured, grounded, creative, sensual, etc will also be optimal.

Protect your energy in all forms, and stay away from individuals who constantly trigger your fight or flight. The ones who make you feel constantly drained and tired. It can be easy for others to syphon your energy because you always have an abundant amount, so be mindful of the people you entertain, engage, and interact with frequently.

Ensure to maintain a good balance between mind and heart as well. Allow yourself to be vulnerable with others. Prioritize feeling safe and comfortable around others. Learning to control your impulses if you're an Aries, or letting go of control if you're a Scorpio. Protect yourself, but don't shut down completely.

I had the longest fuckin essay written for this, accidentally closed Tumblr and deleted it, then rewrote it even LONGER. LET'S GO. I am sorry in advance for how fucking long this is op

So I saw this post a while back and kind of passed it by bc I was like nah I don't agree, but it stayed in my brain and as I've been rewatching JLTAS and reading MM comics I'm actually realizing you're on to something with this, op. tl;dr Martians do have established telepathy BUT it's a huge question of abilities and morals in the entirely new element that is humanity. buckle up fellas I'm about the drop the longest session of J'onn J'onzz discussion the internet will ever see me write about anything ever because my god he is a complex character and also my favorite. if you couldn't tell from my entire profile.

This will focus on JLTAS & JLU of course bc that's my earth prime canon or whatever, but I'm pulling out comics for my main point too since I consider them canon-adjacent or even somewhat canon lore so you know. spoilers for MM 98, MM 06, and Justice League Infinity if needed under the readmore. also don't quote me 100% on everything cause I've only read the comics once and I have the memory of a flea but I have a lot of thoughts on this topic so bear with me ?? hopefully this will end up being cohesive and shit, enjoy 👉👈 content warnings in the tags !! please check them before clicking ahead bc there's some fucked up stuff early on !!

So, first things first, let's address the biggest thing, and that's Martian telepathy and the Martian code. In MM 98 it's established that Martians are a telepathic race. It's how they communicate the majority of the time, but here's the catch: it's all willingly. Martians have to open their minds to reading, they have to give permission for this communication to happen. Only the "cop" system, the Manhunters, can freely read minds and even then there's some level of permission required except in extreme cases. Which, going by JLTAS lore, is little to none. The Secret Origins novelization explains that war, poverty, etc, had long ceased to exist on Mars, so the Manhunter profession is not exactly in high demand. But I digress.

The ultimate crime in Martian culture is telepathic violation. In MM 98, at Darkseid's bidding, J'onn's twin brother Ma'alafa'ak forcefully invades the minds of many of the Martians in his vicinity (he's already a very bitter guy for a long list of reasons so this doesn't exactly take a lot of convincing), including M'yri'ah, J'onn's wife. on their wedding night. this whole story is really fucked up, guys. This mind rape-- yes, that's the actual Martian term for it-- is not only a horrific breach of trust but is also extremely traumatizing. M'yri'ah struggles greatly to let J'onn back into her mind (part of the sacred side of Martian telepathy is mentally bonding with a partner when they marry) after the fact because she just feels so tainted (you get the idea with the term rape being used for this situation, that's the only reason I included the word itself). When the Manhunters confirm Ma'alafa'ak's guilt the Martian leaders wipe his mind and remove his telepathic abilities so he doesn't have any memory of the incident and everything leading to it (which ends up not lasting long-term and makes him even angrier. the comic is a good read but it's depressing and fucked up. someone please give J'onn a hug. also keep this in mind for later).

To bring this around to op's original point, I think this falls into the setting of A Better World well. Bruce asks "can't, or won't?" of J'onn reading Lord J'onn's mind, and J'onn tells him "both." It's not a matter of inability, but moral conduct. J'onn is a Manhunter, so yes, he could barge into Lord J'onn's mind, but aside from Bruce's intuition he has absolutely no reason to distrust this other version of himself, so he refuses to do it. The Martian code means he can't do it without permission or reason, and his moral compass means he won't do it either.

So now that the precedent is set for the Martian mind reading code, let's get more into the JLTAS of the original post.

J'onn arrives on Earth and, as op mentioned, he is more than likely bombarded. Unlike Martians who have to open their minds willingly, humans have no such barriers. Their thoughts are all out in the open and they are loud (see Tabula Rasa). It's hard for J'onn to deal with this volume and I suspect he's only keeping it together because he's imprisoned in the Rockies, which aren't exactly bustling, and the stasis field doesn't let anything in or out. The Secret Origins novelization confirms J'onn was trying to reach out to Superman for at least six months (HOWEVER there's time discrepancy happening here, the Watchtower took nine months to build but Diana also says in Paradise Lost that she was off Themyscira for eight months, so take it as you will). Of course, I don't think the stasis field alone is to blame for this-- J'onn is more powerful than any primitive human technology, so it may not be that hard for him to get around the stasis if he so chooses, though he's also significantly weakened at this time. But he has to grapple with whether or not it's okay. If he reads Superman's mind, is he breaking the Martian code? Clark isn't Martian, but he's still another alien. J'onn seems to work around this by only establishing who Superman is and then implanting images in his brain to communicate the impending doom and J'onn's location-- a moral compromise.

(Secret Origins also established that the Imperium's species drained Martian abilities, so the Imperium and J'onn could communicate telepathically during their final encounter. That's the closest thing J'onn has to a "normal" conversation in the entire series and sequel. Not necessarily related, just thought it worth noting?)

So J'onn is well aware of his telepathic abilities, but adapting to their use on Earth is not just a battle but a full scale war. This can also absolutely explain why J'onn is nerfed pretty much the entire series. If he has to fight a physical battle on top of the constant mental war just to stay sane among seven billion people with zero mental barriers, J'onn is going to lose badly every time, and that's magnified tenfold when he has to use his telepathic abilities too. In Legends he tries to 1v1 Ray, who's been doing an insane amount of mental upkeep for 40 years, and knocks J'onn on his ass twice (credit to him for getting up the first time, but he attempts a combined physical and mental attack and it is excruciating, resulting in J'onn being out the rest of the fight. also this one is kind of a gray area for me in regards to the code and J'onn tearing down Ray's mental protection. Was it absolutely necessary? Was J'onn only dispersing an illusion? I don't know that I can 100% call this a breach of the Martian code so I'm not, at least for this discussion). In A Knight of Shadows when J'onn reaches out telepathically to locate Morgan le Fay (this is just him doing his job as a Manhunter, so he's not violating the code imo), the sorceress says J'onn is "merely an amateur" and "he has no idea who he's dealing with" before proceeding to absolutely destroy his mental state.

Relevant tangent, this is by far the worst telepathic backlash J'onn receives in the series, to the point I think it actively corrupted his moral compass and perhaps even truly set all this off. While he's struggling to fight the visions he knows are not real, J'onn is slipping, and during his fight with Etrigan he doesn't hesitate to barge into the demon's mind. And yeah, the tragedy of Jason Blood is what snapped J'onn out of it completely, but if you add the realization that he just committed the worst crime of his culture on top of it? Suddenly it makes a lot more sense why J'onn then tries to leave the League. That's almost more devastating for him than the visions of what he lost. He endangered his adopted family and did the one thing Martians are never supposed to do (even if Etrigan isn't Martian by any means, the principal stands, and J'onn is not exactly the best about giving himself the nuance of being largely under le Fay's possession).

Back to the point, in Tabula Rasa J'onn tells Clark that he can attempt a telepathic global sweep to locate Luthor (it's in his job description, again, so it's okay-ish), but J'onn has worked for at the very least a year and a half (I'm clocking it at 2+ years by this point personally) to shut out that much noise. Reopening the floodgates is going to be hard on him, and we see that it is, as J'onn has to escape to the quietest place he can find on Earth while he recovers from the agonizing mental barrage.

Next up, in Only a Dream we get the only moment in JLTAS or JLU when J'onn actually sleeps. He's in a semiconscious state on the Watchtower, the quietest mental place accessible. In Justice League Infinity we do see that J'onn actually sleeps at least somewhat regularly, so this absolutely backs up the sleep deprivation point imo.

In the same episode J'onn shows his power level more (why Only a Dream is my favorite episode set), but he's still out of his depth. Doctor Destiny is brand new to the mental game yet J'onn can't bring a normal human out of his hold. Destiny is ruthless, unhinged, and motivated to destroy the League and anyone who gets in his way, no holds barred. J'onn is only able to combat him on the mental field by bringing Clark, John, and Wally into the fray. "I'm stronger than you are here," he tells Clark, but Superman's not a telepath. When facing Destiny the villain says "You can't beat me," and J'onn knowingly replies with "That's why I brought a friend." J'onn is not equipped for this level of telepathic battle. He's got a leg up on his teammates, or at least most of them, but he's not strong enough on his own to take down someone so willing to break rules. I suspect even if J'onn could get to Shayera telepathically he wouldn't have been able to help her because she was so far gone in Destiny's mental hold.

Which brings me to the Thanagarians. At the beginning of Starcrossed J'onn mentions to GL that he can't read Shayera's mind, he never could, and he can't read any of the hawk minds. We find out that Thanagarians have a very strong natural mental barricade and when it finally comes down to life and death J'onn has to fight hard to read Kragger's mind. I believe the only reason he's able to get that far is time and perhaps desperation; by this point we've seen him getting a better hold on using his telepathy in this new element, a la holding his own going 1v1 telepathically with Grodd in The Secret Society (and it's still imperfect-- J'onn didn't realize the League was being mentally manipulated until after the fact, not to mention Grodd has had less time with his telepathic abilities than J'onn, so there's some power imbalance). Were the invasion any sooner I don't know if J'onn could've pulled off breaking a Thanagarian mind.

Which, yeah, that's exactly what happened. Although it technically falls under "necessary force" of the Martian code, J'onn had to absolutely destroy Kragger mentally to read his mind. It was exhausting, undoubtedly horrific, and very possibly traumatic for J'onn. And at this point I think he's really fully beginning to slip morally.

When JLU opens we see J'onn holed up in the Watchtower. He angrier, less friendly, doesn't interact unless necessary, snaps at everyone. He's gentler with the og group because they're family but even with them he's prone to be more short and snarky. He's always been sassy, but this reads to me as less banter and more just fucking tired and a little bitter, you know?

But why? J'onn's never been an extrovert, but why is he suddenly more hostile and withdrawn? My answer is he feels he's losing his hold on his moral compass, and maybe that scares him, and we know from so many JLTAS instances that J'onn is very much ✨ keep it to yourself ✨ with his problems (same, and bless him, but he's an impulsive idiot sometimes fr. makes him human). As early as Hawk and Dove, J'onn reminds Diana, "You and I have both been affected by our time among humans. It's important that we keep ourselves in check." I think this speaks louder volumes about where J'onn is standing than Diana. How far is he going to keep himself in check? Has he decided that hiding on the Watchtower rather than being out on missions himself is the best course of action to preserve his morals? Does he believe being around humans on an earthside capacity is driving him downhill? More importantly, can you blame him? He's seen the worst humanity can offer for years now, he just watched his closest friend fly off the handle at the smallest inconvenience. If power doesn't corrupt then maybe being exposed to humanity long enough will.

And it only gets worse. Task Force X (my favorite JLU episode) really smacks you in the face from this viewpoint. A group of humans breaks into the Watchtower. J'onn is unable to stop them because they threaten his team. He can't track them down because they've done major damage to the Watchtower systems. And worst of all, the whole thing was set into motion because another human betrayed the League. When J'onn figures out who was responsible, his immediate reaction is "I'd like to go in there and wipe clean the last two years of his memory." GL is shocked, asking, "Isn't that a little harsh?" to which J'onn only replies, very angrily, "We can't trust him!" This hits different after reading MM 98 because I see where this anger is coming from. This is very personal to J'onn. This is the biggest violation of his trust since Ma'alafa'ak (canon-adjacent, but relevant to consider) and his response is to pass the hardest judgement Martian culture offers. That's dark-- very, very dark. And all this because of a human. I know facing off with CADMUS absolutely did not make J'onn feel better about the whole ordeal either.

By season 2 J'onn is a total hermit, and they can't even determine when he was last on the surface. He wants nothing to do with humanity one on one and Diana calls him on it in To Another Shore. "You really don't like humanity all that much, do you?" J'onn only says "I don't... dislike them." Earth is his adopted home, he's duty bound to protect it, and to pull one of my favorite quotes from MM 06, "...this is a good planet, filled with good people. You just need to see it for yourselves."

Relevant tangent number 2, this comic is perfect for this point in discussion. The JLA has disbanded, and J'onn has adopted a more Martian appearance in public, which means he's trying to help people and he's only scaring them because they don't trust him, he looks different, but he's too tired of hiding to care anymore. As the comic goes on he's led to believe humans have been experimenting on other Martians and he kinda goes off the deep end to protect them. Yet in the middle of all this shit he still says there are good people on Earth.

So we can see where J'onn is at here. He knows there's good on Earth, that it's not all a waste, and that they're worth protecting, that's why he's still in the League helping people. But he doesn't have to like or even want to be around humans to still hold that belief (take it from someone who knows).

To Another Shore finally brings J'onn back to Earth, and this is where the tide turns for him (pun not intended pls). He's already on the slippery slope with his morals, and in the episode he doesn't hesitate to read Giganta's mind. He gets backlash from Grodd but he recovers almost immediately, and that's the worst part. He's not just capable of breaking the Martian code now, he's good at it, despite being isolated on the Watchtower for however many years. What Diana said to him and the tragedy of Prince Jon (why are there so many Johns in DC) hits full force and J'onn realizes being withdrawn from humanity is hindering as much as it is helping him. He needs to get out there and find the good he knows humans have to offer. He needs to be one of them, because yeah, he's going to live a long time and it's not going to do him any favors to spend that time alone, but he also needs to actually balance his abilities with the capacity of humans. He needs to find ways to reconnect with his moral compass, to adapt his code, right on Earth.

Also, having just reread, Justice League Infinity absolutely hits this home because he's still struggling with these issues. J'onn is finding a little peace and making friends among humans, but he's having to actively shut off his telepathic connection to the League which works like, 50-50 for him. When Overman shows up and a close human friend disappears, J'onn can't stay away any longer and rushes in. Unfortunately the instant he arrives J'onn immediately goes after Overman telepathically to shut him down because, well, he's a raving Nazi version of Superman with none of the morals to prevent him from hurting or killing. J'onn stops him kind of brutally, saying, "Your mind, Overman. Give it to me." J'onn's acting on instinct and emotion and he regrets it right away after reading Overman's mind to find he's just a broken man fucked up by Vandal Savage, and feels guilty about "violating his mind" for a long time after. He has to threaten Overman again bc this guy is dangerous and unhinged, and it works too well. Overman is terrified of J'onn. Feeling worse than ever J'onn tells Diana, "I am disgusted with myself. Telepathic invasion is anathema to me... and yet I did it eagerly." This is the second time he's expressed his guilt to his friend in this comic and I absolutely lend that to my reason why he left the League. J'onn's gotten too good at handling the power of his telepathy on Earth, he knows it, and it scares and disgusts him that it's so bad even other people are visibly afraid of him.

In a way being in the League didn't do him any favors. You see the worst of the worst, day in and day out, and most of the time the thanks you get isn't going to balance it. You're controversial, people love you, people hate you, you draw more trouble because that's how it works with heroes and villains, you get shit like Eclipsed happening. J'onn didn't get the Clark Kent Earth experience, he got the Bruce Wayne Earth experience, except worse because J'onn can hear the thoughts of seven billion people all the damn time, and people always think things they'd never say out loud. "You and I have both been affected by our time among humans" is such a raw line for this.

But hey, JLI nicely wraps the story for J'onn. He helps Diana and Bruce save the multiverse (in a glorious WonderBat moment) and when it's all said and done he decides he wants to be an ambassador for the League. J'onn is finding ways to best connect with people while staying true to the part of him that's so bonded with his family in the League.

Anyway, my brain totally ran away with this, hopefully I addressed the actual original post in all my bullshit ??? LMAO I have a lot a lot a LOT of thoughts and feelings on the complexity of J'onn J'onzz. There's soooooo much to him that JLTAS and JLU service well but not loudly unless you're looking for it.

I've been watching Justice League the animated series and I just fell down a rabbit hole with my husband and have to share it/inflict it on everyone else:

Okay, going only off of thr canon in JL:TAS, J'onn J'onzz establishes that Martians CAN'T read each other’s minds when the Justice Lord version of Martian Manhunter shows up.

Which made me think, wait, did the Martians NOT know they were telepathic before that?

Like, yeah the white Martians invaded and it was implied that the green Martians knew at that point that they could read minds and the like, but like...I'm obsessed now with the idea of J'onn J'onzz had no idea that he could read minds until he came to earth and suddenly was in a world were every sentient creature seemed to be screaming all the time even when they weren't actually speaking

Like, part of his learning how to adapt to earth is learning how to use his sudden telephonic abilities. It even works well story telling wise when it comes to the issue of "opps our hero has a power that would make this plot end in a second" thing. Make it something that when he gets too overwhelmed and stressed it starts shorting out, or maybe it's something where it keeps him from sleeping because being relaxed enough to sleep means the mental walls he's managed to build for himself are lowered and all the chatter starts filtering in.

Sleep deprivation is honestly a great tool for writing if you use it right. Need your overpowered hero to be weak enough for this enemy to be a threat? Sleep deprivation. Your smart character to do something a little dumb in a way that isn't annoying to the audience? Sleep deprivation! As long as you make the effects consistent for the character in question it can give you a lot of breathing room for plot lines in a way that won't piss off your readers (so long as you don't over use it at least) while also adding the benefit of mixing in a little angst as your character deals with it.

Just, I really want a story of Martian Manhuntwr having to deal with sudden Mind Reading powers upon coming to Earth and all the interesting consequences and storylines that could come out of that.
