please please please expand on your thoughts about tid (& how reading tda effected it) because I would love to know 👀

Getting my biggest hot take out of the way first: I did not care for Will at all during my first read through.

*pause for half the fanbase to unfollow me*

I saw him as the compensation love interest for Tessa while she waited for Jem to be unsilent-brothered and because of this I never got interested in his plot lines or him as a character.

The main effects of reading TDA first was that I already knew the end to the mystery of what Tessa was and what was going to happen to Jem which were some of the biggest plot hooks of the series excluding Will’s curse and the love triangle(which as previously stated, I did not care about either).

I also despised Gideon with my entire being which probably doesn’t have anything to do with my reading order but going from Julian “I will burn down the world for my siblings” Blackthorn to Gideon “What sister?” Lightwood probably didn’t help my opinion of him.

My hatred of Gideon also dragged down my enjoyment of Sophie’s character as the series went on and my younger self didn’t even try to get invested in Charlotte and Henry since they were the adults™️, this left me with 3 characters was actually invested and interested in: Jessamine, Gabriel, and Cecily.

I genuinely love the 3 of them and they’re my favorite part of the books, which is a slight problem since one of them died in the second book after barely being in it and another wasn’t introduced until the third book.

Don’t get me wrong, TID is a well written series. It’s probably one of if not the best written series in all of TSC, but because of my absolute lack of interest in the majority of characters and plot lines, especially the main trio that the books spent most of their time on, it stands as one of my least favorite series in TSC.

remember when cecily first met jem and she likened him to a prince out of a fairy tale, and said she was most enchanted by him out of everyone in the institute. yeah. she was so real for that

news in: woman finishes rereading tid for the nth time, bawls her eyes out and is shocked at how long it takes to emotionally process the last book. the epilogue was fatal. it nearly killed her. she will not learn from this experience. she survives only to repeat the process.

artist notes: - ty's eyes are the same color as tessa's - lucie and livvy have the same hair color, while the rest of the brunette blackthorns have tessa’s hair - ash has sebastian’s coloring but clary/jocelyn’s features - alec, anna, and kit have the same blue eyes as will and cecily, but i actually picture kit's eyes to be lighter. i just draw too many blonde haired/blue eyed characters - the blackthorns were the most fun to draw :>

Will Herondale, having to be cruel against his very nature every single day to everyone, terrified of Jem leaving, crying himself to sleep since learning of Jem and Tessa's engagement (every time Tessa sees him it is mentioned he is red-eyed), walking around London endlessly to outrun his own thoughts, unable to let anyone know. James Carstairs, dying and terrified it will break Will, growing weaker and hating himself for it, killing himself for fear of letting Tessa know her love isn't sustaining his life, unable to let anyone know. Tessa Gray, beaten and slapped, exhausted to tears in a prison, terrified for her brother and if he's dead, loving two people equally and having to hide it from both, unable to let anyone know. Gideon Lightwood, walking away from his family, hoping to be a better man that his little brother can look up to, wanting to save him from their childhood, in love with a woman that does not seem to want him, unable to let anyone know. Gabriel Lightwood, alone in a house with his father going mad, heartbroken at his brother leaving him, trapped by the Consul's blackmail, unable to let anyone know. Cecily Herondale, losing both her siblings in a matter of days, growing up alone and having to learn to repair the cracks left behind by her brother leaving, being angry at him for not thinking their family was worth it, unable to let anyone know. Sophie Collins, only a servant, her only wish to be a Shadowhunter being one which can never come true because she has a debt to repay, in love with a man with whom it can never work out, unable to let anyone know. Charlotte Branwell, her only desire to influence and help and protect being mocked and crushed by men, in love with a man that looks at her as a friend, unable to let anyone know. Henry Branwell, knowing things work different than what he's been taught, knowing he is right but cannot possibly explain and will always be laughed at as insane, in love with a woman that married him for convenience, unable to let anyone know.

The Infernal Devices understood loneliness like no other book I've read, the bone deep sense of being utterly alone even when surrounded by people.

you ever think about how ending of tid is so bitter-sweet because Jem is forced to take a step away from the two people he loves most and watch their lives on the sidelines. and how 130 years later he gets saved by someone who would have never existed if they all had not loved each other so so much, and could never have saved Jem if people hadn't loved him just as much. no adaptation will ever be able to capture this btw.

sometimes I remember that Magnus Bane literally appeared in every single book of the shadowhunter chronicles and no, I'm not talking about trilogies, I mean every book (it's subtle, but we can find him also in the codex) and I just realized how he really is the supreme main character of all time
