Riko isn't a super well-explored character, but he is consistent and predictable in ways I find really interesting. The crux of his character for me is that he isn't just an evil sadist who tortures people for fun, he's an evil sadist who tortures people for fun specifically because of his family structure and the environment he was raised in.

He grew up in the Nest, raised by his abusive uncle. He grew up knowing that being the second son means he's lesser and unworthy of love and recognition. He grew up internalizing that being the best at Exy is the only way he could ever get positive attention. He grew up as a pet and mascot for a revolving door of intense college athletes he was going to join one day, because he never had a choice to do or think anything else.

Being the captain of the Ravens is the first time he's ever had any sort of power or control, and it wasn't not over his own life, it was over the lives of other people, especially those with direct ties to the Moriyamas. Without literally any guidance or model for behavior, he replicated what he knew best, violence and abuse. He finally had an outlet for his feelings and his pain, that being enacting it on those he has power over.

He kind of loses this consistency in the sequel series, where his characterization is more as just an evil sadistic villain who enacts cruelty because he finds it amusing, which I find really sad. However, if you carry through with his characterization, with the idea that he inflicts the abuse he himself experiences onto others, things can start getting really interesting because there's quite a bit you could extrapolate about Riko just based on what he's done to Jean.

Ultimately Riko is a pretty tragic character to me, because I really think he is a product of his environment. He didn't have to turn out like that, but he had no escape route, no positive influence, no help of any kind. He turned out the way he did because he never had a chance to be anything else.

The part where the FBI gives Neil the papers to legally change his name and all the other stuff so Neil Josten can officially become a 'real' person 😭😭 oh my god I love Neil so much. And the way you can literally feel his relief after Nathan is killed haijsdghfjagshajfhgdsh I cried. I sobbed. I screamed into my pillow. I smiled. I stared at the wall to collect myself, then cried some more.

It's never not going to be funny to me that the way the description for tfc is written makes it seem like Kevin is the love interest.

Even I, someone who knew damn good and well going into the books that Andrew was the actual love interest, had to take a moment and reevaluate after reading:

One of Neil's new teammates is a friend from his old life, and Neil can't walk away from him a second time. Neil has survived the last eight years by running. Maybe he's finally found someone and something worth fighting for.

love the idea that Andrew Minyard is fucking weird. like I mean he is a weird kid. he's not a sociopath like everyone assumed he was, he's just fucking weird. this kid rips up food and eats it in pieces, he's weird. I dont think the meds made him say weird shit, they just got rid of the filter. he's still thinking phrases like that "holier than thou" shit. those thoughts are still bouncing around in that cranium, he just doesn't vocalize them. that eidetic memory is being used for niche random facts that he just kinda knows simply because he was bored once and decided to fuck around and find out. he wears black nail polish and bites his nails because he weird, and I'd go to war for him.

kevin day is too iconic of a character like wdym he escaped a cult and people call him queen and he's the best exy player in the world. AND he's a bitch (affectionate). of course his story needs to bookend the whole series. He's Been Here The Whole Time.
