When I read the books of the Grishaverse years ago I wrote a post here on tumblr and I must have deleted or something because I can't find it so I'm writing it again.
It's so heartwarming to me that every male/main-love interest in the Grishaverse essentially gives up something that are very dear or important to them to their respectively female-love interests by the end of each book. As in:
By the end of S&B, Mal gave up his life for Alina. Quite literally something dear/important to him, I would say. The child literally looked his love in the eyes and said If it's my life you need, kill me them. It's yours.
By the end of SoC, Kaz gives Inej two very important things: First, her freedom. He is essentially letting her go even before knowing she would make the conscious decision of not giving up on Ketterdam and Kaz. I will have you without your armor, Kaz Brekker, or I won't have you at all, remember? Kaz loves Inej and still he loves her enough to not hold her in a city she clearly despises. He buys her freedom and a ticket to be as far away from Ketterdam and essentially him as possible.* Also, he gives her - literally in the last scene of Crooked Kingdom - the gift of physical touch and that says a lot on its own.
The icing on the cake: By the end of Rule of Wolves Nikolai makes the grand gesture of giving Zoya his kingdom, ending a dynasty for her. The Lantsov founded Rakva and yet he looked Zoya in the eyes, KNEELED TO THE GROUND and said If I one day become King it's because I marry you, and not the other way around. Yep, Yep, long live the Dragon Queen, Nikolai Lantsov.
Leigh Bardugo made many mistakes. The main male love interests were not one of them.
*Kaz eventually realizes Inej is not giving up on him or Ketterdam but my point still stands.

Book Review #50 of 2023--
Tumblr media
Demon in the Wood by Leigh Bardugo and Dani Pendergast. Rating: 3 stars.
Read on May 1st.
I’m going to keep this one short since it’s a graphic novel that gives a backstory to a pretty well known character in the Grishaverse. In this one, we get the origin story for the Darkling. It’s one of those things where the author tries to make you sympathetic to the bad guy but you don’t care about it enough to want to defend any of the bad things they’ve done. As they say on Brooklyn 99, ‘Cool motive. Still murder.’ I did like the art style and I enjoyed the characters. Mostly Annika who I enjoy due to her being such a morally grey character. Tell me how that makes any sense when I dislike the Darkling for being such a bad guy. I don’t know either. The turn in the story that leads to Aleksander becoming the Darkling was the most interesting part of the story and the only thing keeping this from being rated lower. I don’t know. I guess if you make me hate a villain enough then his origin story won’t ever do much for me.

Okay so I’ve been a huge Old Guard fan since the comics and recently binged all of Deo Volante and KoS on the recommendation of a friend and loved absolutely every bit of them. The same friend said I absolutely had to read all of your works but I don’t overlap into any of the other fandoms- I know a bit about Good Omens and Sandman through tumblr osmosis and a bit less about Shadow and Bone, then nothing at all about Timeless and some of the others.
The friend in question said most of your works are similar to KoS in that they’re completely separate AUs that reference/cameo canon but can be appreciated and understood without reading them (I believe they specifically mentioned one called Promised Land or something that was that way?) and I just want to poke in and ask if you’d also say that was the case, like which of your works (if any) can be read and appreciated without having read actual canon and if there are any I should avoid until I’ve read/watched the source material?
Aha, thanks so much. I think one of the highest compliments you can give a fic writer is to want to read their stuff even from fandoms that you yourself are not in, so yes. This will not by any means be an exhaustive list (you can find my full AO3 profile here, I have a lot of fics and most of them are, uh, Long) but some highlights that you might enjoy include:
Shadow and Bone:
This is the "Promised Land" fic referenced by your friend above. It's a historical AU set in the 1980s Soviet Union. You don't really need to know anything about the source material to enjoy it, and other fans of mine who weren't familiar with SaB have read this and liked it.
The Sandman:
This will introduce you both to the characters and the ship (Dreamling) in the course of a long historical saga. This one isn't an AU; it's canon-verse (for the TV show) all throughout, but it's designed in a way that doesn't really rely on knowing the TV show beforehand (and especially since this ship became a fan favorite after literally 30 minutes in half an episode).
Timeless:
This is another of the fics of mine that people who don't know the source material have read and enjoyed. It's an AU set in a magical steampunk Victorian universe, and features one of my favorite Garbage Men of all time, Garcia Flynn. Blowing up things, as he does, and being outmatched by a tiny and feisty historian named Lucy.
Also, if you are a KoS fan, I have exciting news for you, in that I'm currently working on an original-novel rebuild of it based on the same premise, featuring all-new characters, world, relationships, plots, etc., entitled The Empire of Bones. I have just finished part 2 (of a planned 3) and am planning to publish it when I'm done, probably independently but possibly also looking for a tradpub deal (depending on how much hassle that proves to be; I have tried it before and don't have unlimited patience). Anyway, yes. I'm very excited about this project and am looking forward to being able to share it.
Happy reading!

for the book asks: 2, 5, 13, 17 please :D
2. Did you reread anything? What?
I did! I re-read Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde (a great dystopian novel where your colour vision determines your social standing) and The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer (really well done fairy tale retellings)!
5. What genre did you read the most of?
Young adult fantasy mostly, and textbooks unfortunately.
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer (the characters were soooo unlikeable), The Royal Treatment by Melanie Summer (such bad writing it was almost a DNF), and I was disappointed by This Is How You Lose The Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (it was overhyped imo)
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Yes actually! I decided to give the Grisha verse books by Leigh Bardugo a chance this year and I ended up really liking them! Six of Crows was my favourite, and I am super bummed that Netflix cancelled their stand alone series before they got to make it.

Bookshelf Overview
In classic me fashion when asked a simple question, I make a very overcomplicated, unnecessary picture display on the matter. The lovely @solaarflaree asked to see the organisation of my bookshelf so here I am to walk you through it as best as I can. Did I draw over the childhood picture of me and my sister? Yes. We are going to pretend we don't notice because privacy is a thing and my editing skills are as basic as just scribbling over the image in paint.
Anyway, from my expertly taken (and by that I mean wandered upstairs and used my getting on a bit phone) picture of my bookshelf overview you can see my general setup. My shelves are all IKEA Billy bookcases (love you IKEA) and I have 12 big shelves that I use for books and 6 half-size shelves that I use to store random stuff I have been given/collected over the years and have no other place for. You may also notice that the very top shelves are actually dedicated to Red Velvet & SHINee, that is the not my entire kpop collection but they deserved their own shelves, and no I do not own every album yet because they are very expensive when ordering from the UK~
My organisation goes left to right and then onto the next shelf, not all left and then all right, which will make more sense when I explain down below.
Shelf Details
Looking at my shelves more closely, I organised the pictures how the shelves are meant to be viewed to give the best idea of how my books are organised. The easiest way to explain it/show them is to say that the middle block of shelves act as a decorative buffer but ultimately my shelves follow a left to right sweep with a small break in the centre. You can see this easily when the pictures are put together by looking at my Hunger Games books, you can see the books jump from the left hand shelves to the right hand shelves rather than going underneath. I essentially view my long shelves as one long shelf, rather than two separate bookcases, and so I will explain them as such.
Starting with the top two images you can see that right now I have my graphic novels separate to the rest of my books, that is really just because of spacing, sometimes they are grouped at the very front too, it all depends on where I can squeeze them in. Then going to the immediate right you will see my cute mug that houses all my bookmarks and this is where my books essentially begin. It starts with books that are compilations i.e. there is not one author featured to alphabetise them, so they are oranised alphabetically by book title. From 'P.S. I Love You - Cecelia Ahern' we officially move into the alphabetised section, these books are alphabetised by the author's surname and this is generally how all my books are organised. The only thing that overrules alphabetising is chronology within a series, which takes president e.g. you will notice that my Leigh Bardugo books are organised both alphabetically (starting with Ninth House) and then chronologically (the Grisha verse books are organised in the order they were written/that the story follows).
Also yes there is a random book stacked on top of the others, that is because I bought it literally two days ago and like a moron didn't notice it was a sequel until I got home, so it is like that to remind myself to buy the first book before I put it away.
This order continues pretty much throughout until we reach the bottom left picture, on the very bottom shelf, where you will see 'The Book Thief - Markus Zusak'. At this point the organisation changes slightly again, though there is still a running theme of alphatisation throughout.
Here I start with a very, very (literally two) small collection of non-fiction books and then we move onto my special editions. It starts with my very old Shakespeare books and moves quickly onto my hardback collection (this section is only for special edition hardbacks, otherwise you'll see hardbacks all throughout my shelves). These books are again organised first alphabetically by author and then alphabetically by novel e.g. all my Jane Austen books are together but they are further organised alphabetically by title rather than chronology, this is because the books are stand alone rather than a series. After my hardbacks you'll see I have a few paperback special editions, these came together as a set so I have kept them that way rather than splitting them apart by author, although within the sets I've organised them alphabetically by author.
Then we move onto my poetry collection. Poetry again is organised first by author's surname, then by series/chronology. This is easiest to see with my Amanda Lovelace collection, where all her books are grouped together by the series they come in and the order they were published. At the end of my poetry collection is again compilations, books where there isn't just one author, so they are placed at the very end of the shelf as to not get mixed in with everything else. Finally, I have a few books that are just huge and don't have a set place to belong so it makes sense for them to be there.
Plushy Bonus & Final Thoughts
Finally, there is a bonus picture of all my plushies that live on top of my shelves. I won't go through naming them all but they are very cute and watch over me when I sleep.
Other than that you may notice I have a lot of other random stuff on my shelves, some of it decorative and some of it just gets dumped there for convenience sake. You never know when you'll need a blob of blu tack or some scissors.
In conclusion, my way might not work for everyone but even if it makes no sense to you, I hope you enjoyed this insight into the way my mind works. If the organisation still baffles you, at the very least I hope you enjoy nosying at the kind of books I like to read and the sort of random stuff I collect~
If anyone took the time to read all of this, thank you 😘

I was tagged by the lovely @fourseascns to do this tag game thing~ I usually try to stick to a kpop theme on this blog but I'm gonna just scratch that 'cause they're not relevant~
☆ three ships ㅡ Three ships I am very much in love with atm are Nikolai/Zoya (the Grisha verse), Chandler/Monica (FRIENDS) & Alina/The Darkling (the Grisha verse)~ Like I've not even watched Shadow & Bone yet but every time I see something about it it takes me right back to the books and the energy that DarkLina have is just so so so so so so good, it's so perfect, little scared the show is gonna fail to capture it as it has failed to capture some other things...
☆ last song ㅡ The last song I listened to was F U Anthem by Leah Kate~ I'm seeing Hayley Kiyoko in literally like two weeks and I'm pretty sure she's the opener for her and I'm very excited about it all because her songs are kinda all edgy heartbreak songs and going to bring such a good energy to the show before Hayley comes on~
☆ last movie ㅡ The last movie I watched in full was Carol but the last movie I caught on TV, that I absolutely adore, was Legally Blonde~
☆ currently reading ㅡ King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
☆ currently watching ㅡ I'm kinda really slow with watching stuff at a moment, partly because I tend to watch random youtube stuff instead and other stuff I save to watch with my sister but the shows I'm currently watching very slowly are Love (it's on Netflix, it's kinda alright, I'm only a few eps in so we'll see) and Twenty Five, Twenty One (I'm liking it but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the main couple yet with their sort of age difference and how this guy kinda only hangs out with high school kids... idk it's a bit of an odd one but it's got great people in it)
☆ currently consuming ㅡ Mentally ejbgjre lots of Sims 4 youtube videos... I have this weird thing where I watch a lot of Sims 4 youtubers but I actually refuse to play the Sims 4 partly because I'm a Sims 3 loyalist and partly because without so many of the ridiculously priced packs it doesn't seem worth it??? So I like to watch youtubers with all the packs play it and live vicariously through them, y'know, like a normal person.
☆ craving ㅡ Something sweet and/or water right now, I just had bacon and cheese pita sandwiches which were very delicious but that's a lot of savoury/salt and I tend to eat in extremes like that????
I'm gonna tag a few of my lovely mutuals as usual, if you fancy taking part then here ya go and if not I hope you're having a lovely day~ Also I'm sorry I always end up tagging the same people ejgberjge I cannot remember urls for the life of me~
@seuiqi, @kseulgiz, @joshriku, @solaarflaree, @eternallys, @ohmuqueen, @justdoityo, @mizugucci, @mykindofkpop
