# #. FIRST DATE !!
featuring: heartslaybul - octavinelle !! it looks as if they've finally mustered up the courage to ask you out on a date !! but before they can start celebrating, they suddenly remember- there's still so much to do !! figuring out outfits, making good impressions, and most importantly- figuring out where to go! so, where do they take you out for your first date?
I think ive been reading too many shoujo manga / manhwa- but can you blame me?? also love songs are just AAAA !! especially Indian songs. desi songs and movies in general are usually so romantic!! And they give great ideas! anyway, hope you all enjoy this !!
# #. RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS
Riddle's idea of a first date is probably teaching you all the queen of hearts rules while drinking tea or something. Luckily, Cater or Trey butt in- telling him that a study session probably isn't the best idea. Especially since the two of you already meet up a few times per week to do just that. Riddle eventually agrees, he should give you a memorable and exciting experience, one that the two of you could learn from. So what better than a library date ?
Riddle waits near the dark mirror for you, a blank look on his face as he thinks to himself. This was his first ever date. A date that he could only pray went right. Of course, being the absolute perfect housewarden there was, Riddle researched on what to do for a date and how to go about it. His room was filled with books and papers, all holding some type of romantic content in them; mainly ‘shoujo’ manga, a genre Cater suggested. They gave a great insight on how certain dates were supposed to go, including this library date he was trying to accomplish.
The sound of footsteps snaps Riddle out of his daze, and he quickly turns, only to find you standing before him. And when I say his face flushes, it flushes. If possible, he’s even redder than his hair, eyes wide and mouth agape as he stares. How could you get even more beautiful? Riddle’s and absolute flustered mess as he makes eye contact with you- even a simple task such as looking into your eyes has his heart aching. And once you laugh at his flushed face- there’s no coming back.
Just a quick glance at Riddle has you sighing, it looks as if you’d have to take the lead here. Taking the housewardens hand in your own, you cant help but notice how soft it is against your own. And of course Riddle looses his composure once more. You can't help but laugh, eventually he’d get used to this. It isn’t until you reach the library where he eventually calms down. Riddle glances over to you, a smile forming on his face. He suddenly had the great idea to take you to the romance section.
# #. TREY CLOVER
It was two days before your date, and Trey still didn't have a good idea for your first date. Don't get him wrong, he had been planning the date out for a while now. But there were so many things he wanted to do, so many dates he could choose from. It was difficult to pick just one. So now, as he stands in his kitchen, a mini shortcake in his hand, he suddenly has a great date idea. A sweet and romantic one!! And what was sweeter than a picnic date !!
Trey begins working while preparing for an upcoming unbirthday party. He set pastries and goodies off to the side, decorated and pretty just for you. A smile forms on his face as he places them in a picnic basket, taking off his apron. Cookies, cakes, and cinnamon buns were on one side, while sandwiches, crepes, and biscuits were on the other. He had already set up a place in the rose maze, in the middle of a small clearing where tea parties would sometimes occur. White roses lined the maze walls, complementing the blanket sprawled on the grass. In the center was a vase of red roses he picked out for you. It was the perfect place to have a picnic date!
Trey waits for you near the gardens entrance, a few roses in his hand. He looked calm, as always of course. To many, he didn’t have much of a need to be nervous. He prepared a beautiful lunch, filled with pastries and snacks. The date was located in the prettiest place in the rose maze, decorated nicely and pleasing to the eye. His clothes were ironed and pressed, complementing his aesthetic nicely. Most would praise him for being so prepared- telling him that you would love it. Yet Trey couldn’t help but feel anxious, palms sweaty as he griped the roses stems tightly. It’s fine, he was fine, everything was fine.
But once Trey heard your voice he froze. His head jerked up to face you, a pink flush on his cheeks. You were already looking up at him, a bright smile on your face. Trey couldn't help but laugh, mimicking your smile while holding his hand out to take your own. He led you through the rose maze, liking the feeling of your hand in his own. It didn't take too long to reach the picnic blanket, and once you saw Trey’s set up- you suddenly had the urge to jump around and spin and squeal. It was so obviously from the heart that you couldn’t help but swoon. Trey smiled, opening the picnic basket to take out some sandwiches, by the expression on your face he hoped you liked them!!
# #. CATER DIAMOND
There’s so many date ideas to choose from !! From cafes to arcades- it’s just so hard to just pick one alone ! However, Cater had something cooking in the back of his mind. He needed something classic, like from a movie or TV show! But it had to be special and romantic, and of course, heart stopping. It had to be something that could impress you…. Like something from a shoujo manga ! And what was more romantic than an amusement park date?
Cater can just imagine the scene before him. He finds you standing in front of the park’s entrance, eyes focused on the birds before you, so different from the ones in your world. You’re smiling, soft and gently as you fiddle with your phone case- the one he specifically bought for you. Flower petals are floating around you, drifting in the breeze. He can’t help but notice how similar they are to the ones he’d find in the rose maze. Cater had always imagined how’d they look like in a romantic setting.
Cater cant help but reciprocate your smile as he watches you indulge in your own little world. But as much as he would love to just watch you, this was an interactive date! Plus his hands are just itching to take a picture!! Especially since your outfit is just so adorable! You’re dressed in comfortable, yet stylish summer clothes. And what do you know ! Your somehow matching with him, what a fun coincidence !! (He totally didn’t bribe Grim into telling him what you were gonna wear)
Cater giggles to himself, bringing out his phone to surprise you. Suddenly a loud ‘click!’ comes from your right, and you turn to see none other than your favorite ginger. The smile on your face grows tenfold as you run up to him. Cater can’t help when his heart stutters, butterflies fluttering in his stomach when you look at him. He shoves the feeling down, taking your hand in his own to guide you into the park. There was something more important on his mind- he just had to get you on the Ferris wheel before this date ends!!
# #. DEUCE SPADE
Deuce would definitely take you out on a motorcycle- or rather- blastcycle date !! He probably asked his mom the idea- as he was far too flustered to come up with the plan himself. I mean, you actually accepted ! He was so sure you'd turn him down. You knew so much about Deuce, his old life, how bad he was as a kid… he was sure your opinion of him would be tainted with disgust. So now, as he stands before ramshackle, he can’t help but wonder if this is all real.
A bouquet of roses is held tightly in his grip, almost breaking the stems with how much he's shaking. His face is ignited, a hot and heavy blush on his face as he awaits by the door. His minds running a mile a minute, doubt sinking into his chest. Deuce had never been on a real date before. And he wouldn’t count the ones from his delinquent days to be romantic per say. This was his first ever date. A date with the prefect. He couldn’t mess this up- for either of your sakes.
A light sigh escapes Deuce’s lips as he nervously knocks on Ramshackles beaten door. His heart was pounding in his chest, beating far faster than it ever had in track. However, as the click of the door finally registers in his ears, Deuce can just feel his once racing heart stop. His breath hitches, eyes softening as the door opens fully. Your pretty eyes quickly met his own, causing him to almost drop the roses in his hand. A bright smile rested on your face. A smile that easily grasped his heart and held it to your own. absolutely beautiful.
….Your hands are wrapped tightly around his waist as you get onto the blastcycle, body pressed up against his own. He flushed further, feeling your head rest on his back, watching the sunset as you approach the beach. You sit there refined, fully unaware (your doing this on purpose) of Deuce's heart dilemma. It was only the beginning of the date yet he was already on cloud nine. Sevens, he’s gonna become a bowl of hot lava by the end of this !!
# #. ACE TRAPPOLA
Ace had been on many dates before. He once had a girlfriend, a partner. He knew how to make someones heart swell. He knew how to make your heart flutter and soften for him. He knew how a date worked, what to do and where to go. But this time it was special. This time he was going out with you, the prefect. Like others, he had to pick the perfect place. So as he watched snow fall gently to the floor and the school lamps emit a faint light, Ace couldn't help but feel soft. And before he knew it, the perfect idea struck. Ice skating in the city !!
Since it was winter it wasn’t hard to find a nice, frozen, lake that was close, and having the help of the dark mirror made it easier to travel wherever. Usually, Ace would leave his date to figure out where to go on their own, as they were the ones to ask him out in the first place. Yet, Ace had to impress you here, you deserved it for all you’d done so far. You knew him far better than anyone, you listened to him when he was upset, you let him into your home even when he was being an asshole. You cared- Eugh- he just realized how Lovey-Dovey he was being right now.
It was cold and dark the night of your date. Perfect "date material," it seemed, as a few couples were already there, laughing amongst themselves as they got lost to love. Ace scoffed, before realizing he was heading down that exact path. With... you. He shook his head, trying not to dwell on it for too much longer while he laced his skates, flushing bright red. The crunching of snow caught his attention, you were finally here, he assumed. He looked up, an annoyed expression playing on his face, probably about to tease you for being late. The words were right on his tounge, stopping once he gazed up at you. And the once cold Ace was suddenly burning red.
Street lights lit up your form for him to gaze upon. You were smiling, a soft smile, one he could tell was just filled with adoration. Now he was even redder than his housewarden!! ...You intertwined your hand with, using him for balance. He grew redder, thoughts of being balanced and steady leaving his mind faster than he could run from Riddle. He stumbled over himself, leading both of you to the floor, with you landing right on top of him. He grumbled while you laughed, poking fun at the Ace Trappola being ever so flustered. He was going to get you back for sure.
# #. LEONA KINGSCHOLAR
Leona’s idea of a first date is probably laying in bed, and maybe he’ll bring you along. But don’t be fooled, the main date is between him and his bed. It doesn’t take him much convincing to do something grander, especially since he sees you and Malleus talking to each other the day before your date is supposed to happen. Now he has to go all out. And what's more extravagant than taking you to a whole ass ISLAND-
The next day Leona stops by your classroom, leaning against the door frame as he looks down at you, arms crossed. You're confused, obviously, your date wasnt until tonight right, so why was he here now? A smirk forms on his face as he watches your expression shift, he can't help but chuckle at your face. Your mouth was agape, eyes wide and popping out of their sockets. He tells you to quickly pack, honestly surprised that you didnt drop all your books in complete shock.
Leona waits by the dark mirror, eyes closed as his tail swishs back and forth, agitated. Sevens you were taking so long. He fidgets with a small bag in his hand; the extra money he was going to bribe the headmage with. How else would he be able to do this on an average weekend? You'd better appreciate what he was doing- and could you hurry up?? In reality Leona was totally fine waiting- because believe it or not this was also his first date. Being a prince, Leona had to be careful about who he was trying to date, as it would eventually lead to courting, and then marrige. (Do what you will with that information.) So he had to pick the right person. Someone who could be with him always.
His ears twitch, hearing the sound of footsteps approaching. Being petty, Leona doesn't open his eyes until your there for well over a minute. Once he glances over, eyes falling onto your panting, messy, form, he sighs. You looked up at him, smiling brightly while, at the very least, expecting one back. But of course he just scoffed and turned away, leaving you to huff. If he was an actual gentleman he would’ve taken your stuff for you, and would’ve taken your hand and led you into the mirror. (Unbeknownst to you, his heart was starting to beat way faster than he would’ve liked.)
# #. RUGGIE BUCCHI
Ruggie was nervous to ask you out on a date. Mainly because of rejection of course, however the underlining fear of money and costs entered his mind of course. If he went on a date with you it couldn't be cheap and dull. It at least had to be decent, maybe not fully fancy, but at least decent. Luckily he had the perfect place in mind. there was a cheap, yet flattering date that could go perfect if he played his cards right. A cute little cafe date !!
One of the best cafes Ruggie had been to was just below the school, a cheap yet gorgeous place that was sure to blow you away. Some of his favorite donuts were also there, and hopefully he’d get to share them with you. Unsurprisingly, you get there before him, eyes looking up at the cafe sign in awe. You look beautiful, as always, but this time it was different. This time it was just for him… no one else. Perhaps the idea of this being a date was finally setting in.
A sly smile reaches his face as he shuffles closer towards you, trying to hide his flushed expression. He’s stealthy enough to not get your attention, before BOO !! jumpscare- a furry is before you now uh oh. You jump, listening to his snickers and teases while glaring. He will say that your expression is really cute. Ruggie interlocks his hands with yours, lacing your fingers together as he leads you into the cafe. No it’s your turn to tease him, as, “You’re already holding hands?? What- that’s not allowed!!” But he just laughs with you instead.
The cafe is cozy. Warm with the scent of baked goods and sweets, obviously catering to Ruggie’s tastes. You can’t help but giggle, watching as he dashed for the register, ordering a plethora of baked goodies that he would hopefully share with you. He comes back to the table soon after, holding an array of croissants, cake pops, donuts, and more. He’s smiling brightly as he holds out a donut for you, already taking a bite into his own. The both of you hoped this moment would last for a while. Yum.
# #. JACK HOWL
Jack had never been on a date before, and it was painfully obvious. He didn’t know what dates were like, or where to take you for one. He was so new to this subject, it was honestly kind of funny. So of course, he had to ask his idols; Ruggie and Leona on what to do. Leona ignored him- he was probably the worst person to ask- while Ruggie was confused. Again, why ask him?? Still, he was able to give some advice. The inspiring words of, “Idk it’s cold, go do something with snow,” gave Jack the great idea to go snowboarding!
Jack had always loved snowboarding. It was something he was good at, and something he could share with his family. And hopefully, it could be something to share with you. Jack smiled to himself, confidence boosting as he carried the snow gear to the magic mirror. He wasn’t that nervous, he had no reason to be. He liked you and you liked him, and even if you didn’t enjoy the date, it was good enough for him. Jack’s ears twitched, waiting for any sign of you to appear. His tail wagged in anticipation, contrasting his normal face.
The wolf looked up, hearing your footsteps approach, and he couldn’t help the butterflies in his stomach. You were already looking up at him, giggling as you glanced at his puffy winter jacket. It was overtaking his already gigantic form. He flushed, eyes darting around, suddenly nervous and embarrassed. Jack never had time for dates, mainly due to taking care of his siblings and parents. But now, in Night Raven College, surrounded by new people and “friends,” he felt as if he could be someone new. And a little spark bloomed once he saw you.
… Jack looked away, feeling himself getting flustered. The two of you were sitting in the sled, one of you excited while the other was nervous beyond his mind. Jack was flushed, the feeling of your body pressed against his own was waaayyy too much do him to handle. Your back was pressed against his chest, fully aware of how embarrassed he was. The wolf sighed, finally moving the sleigh down the hill as he listened to your sudden screech. Jack laughed, he'd have to get used to this.
# #. AZUL ASHENGROTTO
Azul is going to give you the vip experience in his restaurant, of course!! The lounge was one of the best places to go for dinner. There was appetizing, delicious, foods that were sure to impress you. Unique, flavorful drinks that could easily win people's hearts. Not only that, but the lounges atmosphere and aesthetic could be romantic in a way. (I feel like im promoting the mostro lounge tf-) What better than to spend time in his favorite place with his favorite person? Azul would give you the best dinner date yet!
The lounge was closed that night, surprising, as you never would've imagined Azul to close his restaurant for you. A heartfelt gesture that no one would've have expected him to do. You couldn’t help but swoon slightly, looking down at his message as you got ready. In reality, he was just thinking about business. Closing off the lounge just for a date could give him more publicity! Once Crowley finally gave him permission to branch off to different parts of Twisted Wonderland, he could advertise the lounge as a perfect place for date night!!
A smug smirk is on the octopuses face as he waits near the lounges entrance. He was sure sure to blow you away with his magnificence. Azul was fully prepared, his suit was pressed and cleaned, sporting only the most beautiful of accessories. The food was already out and on the table, which he made all by himself, might I add. And the lounge was set perfectly, pink and orange colors replacing the blue and purple lights for a more romantical effect. He was well prepared, so well in fact he already had a speech ready to go for once you arrived. However, once Azul saw you he froze, suddenly realizing this was a date and not a business offer.
The once smug Octopus was now a flustered, hot, mess. And all he wanted to do was just jump into his octo-pot and scream for messing up all he worked for. He stumbled as he led you into the café, hand shakily in your own. You couldn’t help but snicker, it was fun watching the high and mighty suddenly crumble just because of some date. The two of you sat in the middle of the lounge, quiet and peaceful. Yet Azul could see the teasing looks of Floyd and Jade in the background, their teasing at him being a flustered mess.
# #. JADE LEECH
Jade didn't know much about the surface, other than the fact he enjoyed some aspects of it. The ocean was deep and cold, a starch contrast to the surface. It had life different from the land, more majestic and colorful. To others, the sea was better than the surface. Yet to Jade, it was the other way around. He liked the lands’ high peaks and trees, their foods and plants. The land had a different culture from the ocean, and it was something the two of you could bond over- the beauty of nature. And how better to observe nature than a hiking date?
# #. FLOYD LEECH
The mountains near NRC was rich in wildlife, and although Jade had been there many times before, he had yet to explore every crevice of the forest. Not only, but he'd only ever explored alone, so going with you would make it a memorable experience. He's smiling all day- and for once its not one of his evil ones. His brother and Azul are concerned on why he's so excited. Hopefully he's not trying to make them eat more mushrooms....
Jade waits for you near the silent woods, his smile never once leaving his lips. He had everything for this date, walking sticks and foods. The two of you could have a little picnic in the forest!! Jade watches as you near him, you're in your own hiking clothes, and the eel suddenly realized he could fall harder in love. He places your hand in his, ever so gentlemanly, promising he'd make sure you were safe during your adventure. Man this man can make anyone swoon.
You laugh, watching Jade's eyes sparkle. It was so cute to see him so excited. He went on and on about the different types of wildlife. There were various plans and mushrooms he was able to find- promising to cook you something with them. You couldn't help but smile with him, perhaps for your next date you could take him to the mountains in Epel's town.
Floyd didn’t know where to go for a date, and to be honest, he didn’t care much. Just as long as got to spend time with his Shrimpy he was happy! :D But then Ace had to come along during basketball practice and tell him that not having a good date idea was lame, and of course, Floyd was gonna prove that idiot crab wrong. And eventually, Floyd settled on an aquarium date!
For once, Floyd studied. He studied those stupid Rom com shows that he wanted to throw his shoes at. He read thru manga and storybooks about romance. And he even asked his brother and Azul on what to do. He was doing this all for his Shrimpy so you better like it >:(!! Floyd noticed a pattern while reading and watching how people explored romance. Dates were all over the place- from amusement parks to just walking. But one common date caught his eye- aquarium dates!!
Floyd knew a lot about the ocean, of course, being a fish and all. So what was the point of going to the aquarium? Well he just liked the way they highlighted love. Most aquarium dates had a special feeling to them, so romantic and loving. Most couples held hands while in aquariums, watching the fish while laughing with one another. They hugged and cared- and we all know how much Floyd loved squeezing!! Plus! Knowing all about the fish could impress you!!
The two of you walk through the maze of Tanks, pointing out fish while Floyd compares them to his nicknames. A blue light cascades over you, complementing your excitement prettily. He giggles, telling you to hold onto his arm tightly, telling you to not let go or he'd squeeze you for all eternity!! Its all fun though- with Floyd threatening to jump in and eat those crabs that remind him of Ace. You'd better hold him back before he jumps in the tank and swims with the fishies!!!

do u have any movie recommendations? I trust ur taste and ur taste alone
omg anon,,, thank u. i will try not to disappoint you. i have zero idea what you are in the mood for, so i will just go for the ones i think about daily. fair warning though, almost every good movie that i love and that lives rent free in my mind is from south asia.
Karnan: this movie has seriously been living rent free in my mind since 2021. it's. SO GOOD. warning for police brutality and caste based violence, though. but it's so good, and so worth it, so well fantastically well made. shockingly i haven't seen mari selvaraj's other film, Periyerum Perumal but this one. oh fuck. for a little bit of context, the movie is about these two villages who have a lot of inter caste disputes (while both are oppressed caste communities), and our titular hero's village, Podiyankulam is constantly denied a bus stop. it is such a good think piece on the ways in which caste violence is facilitated, the streams and rivers of oppression that prevent a people from living better lives. so SO good. i think its available on prime.
Village Rockstars: completely a different movie, but this movie is genuinely so loveable. it's about this one girl in a small assamese village who REALLY wants a guitar. it's a very slow moving movie, with some of the most beautiful shots of the director's own village. it's so evident the director just went "you have no idea how beautiful my village is. let me show you," and then infused the film with love from every angle. this one might be on netflix or prime, but one of them will have it.
Made in Bangladesh: this movie is not going to be available anywhere, so if you want to watch it, hmm. well. i shant say. i think the title says it all, but it's about a group of women working in a garments factory in Bangladesh and how they try to unionise. it's not a sob fest, it's not giving you scary facts about what you already know, but it is telling you how difficult it is to ask for anything when you are working in these conditions. again. fantastically made.
Tumbbad: horror movie. upper caste greed. a witch out of which a tree grows. a horrible, monstrous little creature. the sins of fathers passed on to their sons.
The Great Indian Kitchen: i love south indian food. not after this movie though. as my friend cherry says, "south indian traditional food basically means a woman cooks for five hours in the kitchen while the men relax." it's so damn GOOD though. the food i mean (also the movie, but fr). have you had an appam anon????? best thing i tasted since cream buns from sunder bakery. anyway this movie is another horrifying one, you should definitely watch it. it's so good. it tells you so much about the emotional and physical labour women do.
Wade: i can't believe i almost forgot wade, here it is. it's a short ten minute animated movie that put the fear of god in me. about climate change, if you can guess by the name. the sunderbans have been flooded, and if you can imagine what happens next, no you can't.
Jab We Met: okay enough of this depressing shit. also absolutely no one is allowed to judge me. i would die for this movie. i would kill for this movie. legally, if you shame me for this, i'm allowed to murder you. also i KNOW i know it has a manic pixie dream girl but he manic pixie dream girls her RIGHT BACK. i rest my case. also the songs are awesome. this is more traditional bollywood, and i have no regrets.
Jodhaa Akbar: what? i KNOW, i know it is sanitising a story to make Akbar look like the good mughal, i KNOW ruqqaiya begum was akbar's first wife not jodha, i KNOW fatehpur sikri wasn't even made when this film is presumably set, but the VIBES. the vibes are IMMACULATE. Jodha watching Akbar as he swings his sword in the sunlight??? their duel???? the flowers he throws on her??? kill me. kill me now.
Your Name: okay we all know the joke Shinkai can only make one movie but this first one. it had something. also i'm a sucker for the red string of fate. otherwise it's a very standard body swap movie but it's SO GOOD, and as it goes further some of the most amazing animation also happens.
you know i can keep going, i didn't even mention the lunchbox or kumbhalangi nights, but i guess we shouldn't discriminate against the white people
Knives Out: please,,, i know its the movie of the year on tumblr but,,,, so good,,,,,. maybe i'm just a loser who has read too much christie in my life, but i love that the christie style detective is back!! the country house murder, the fantastic way johnson used narrators in the film.... immaculate. christie would be proud. also i know it gets flack for not being as sharp a critique as it could be (i think rightfully, that criticism is for glass onion. i liked it A LOT for a murder mystery, but its politics are duller than the first one's), but it's not a movie about race and class inequality. it's a movie about a murder. johnson just really accurately diagnoses the underlying issues through which a murder happens. also im a BITCH for a classic murder mystery.
Ernest and Celestine: a lovely animated movie about a friendship between a bear and a small mouse, who are supposed to be mortal enemies. also the animation is lovely, did i mention the animation is lovely?
Pride and Prejudice, 2005: you can't come to me for recs and not expect it to be there. i mean, the movie is a masterpiece.
oh i can't think of anything that you guys wouldn't have already heard of.... but i do love How To Train Your Dragon, and Into the Spiderverse. i will go insane when the sequel for the second one comes out. i LOVED Palm Springs when i watched it. OH Emma 2020 really delivered. Do Revenge was amazing too!! im sorry i have less to say about the white people movies......
oh. three white people movies that i genuinely cannot get out of my mind: A Few Good Men, The Scent of a Woman and My Cousin Vinny. make of that what you will.
#hello void this is ridiculosity#south asian cinema#movie recommendations#what can i say? im a basic bitch#the people??? want me to answer???

The Mermaid of the Magdalenes
Canada has a weird hodge podge of folk tales. Our stories tend to be a blend of first nations mythology and European fairy tales. Then as books and later movies came into popularity, traditional oral story telling started to die out. One might think, Canada was just too young of a country to develop it's own folk tales to pass down. Well, think again. In 1918, former member of the house of commons Cyrus Macmillan, compiled a number of Canadian Folk Tales into a book called Canadian Wonder Tales. He wrote them in the style similar to the Brothers Grimm, sometimes adding vessels for magic. His hope was these stories would be accessible to not just more people, but schoolers as well. However, while he thanks the first nations people or "Indians" as he got many of these stories directly from them, he called Canada "a country with a romantic past." with many stories told in a way where it looked like the white man and the Indian were old chums. For those unaware, Canada has had a very problematic history with oppression of our first nations people. For that reason, today I'd like to focus on a Maritimes story, likely shared by sailors. It is a uniquely Canadian story about a girl who just longs for some sardines. Sardines when used in Kitchen Magic can attract luck, health, boost family bonds, community, and prosperity. This is the story of the Mermaid of the Magdalenes.
Far off the north-east coast of Canada is a group of rugged islands called the Magdalenes. They are a lonely, barren group, where grass and flowers and trees grow scantily. There, the northern storms rage with their wildest fury, and the sea breaks with its greatest force upon the bleak rocks. Numberless birds of strange cries and colours fly constantly about. On days when the storm dashes the sea white and angry against the coast, even the thunder of the surf is almost shut out by the screaming of countless gulls; and on clear days the sun is hidden when the birds rise in clouds from their nests. The "Isle of Birds," the Jesuits called one of the islands when they first visited the group hundreds of years ago, and it is an "Isle of Birds" still. It is a wild and rock-bound desolate land.
But although the islands are barren of grass and flowers and trees, the waters around and between them are rich in fish. "The Kingdom of Fish," men call the place, for adventurous traders grow wealthy there reaping the harvest of the sea. The greatest product of the waters is the lobster. He always inhabited these northern seas, and about his power in olden times strange tales are told. Away off the coast of one of the islands, you can still see on fine moonlight nights in May, and also during the day once a year, a maiden holding a glass in her hand, combing her long hair, and looking wistfully to the land. Sometimes, too, on calm nights you can still hear her strange song above the murmur of the waves. She is the phantom lady of the Island over whom the Lobster in far away days used his power. She is now a prisoner in the deep, held there as a punishment for her deeds.
Now, it happened that long ago when fish were first canned for food there was a great slaughter of sardines—the tiny fish of the sea—by cruel money-greedy traders who caught them, packed them in small boxes, and shipped them to far countries, just as they do to-day. These traders received large money rewards for their labour, for people all over the world liked the little fish and paid a high price for them. The sardines saw their number slowly growing smaller, for, being little, they were helpless against their captors, and among all their family there was great sorrow. In despair they asked the big fish of the sea to help them. At last, in answer to their appeal, a meeting of all the fish in the sea was called. Here the big fish took an oath to help their small cousins in their struggle with man, and to punish when they could all who ate or fished the sardine family. And the little fish rejoiced greatly.
One May day a large ship loaded with packed fish was wrecked on the sunken rocks of the Magdalene Islands. Soon the ship was broken up by the heavy surf on the sharp reef, and her cargo was strewn along the shore. It happened that in the cargo were many boxes of sardines, and they too were washed up on the beach by the tide. In the evening, after the sea had calmed, a fair maiden who lived on the Island with her father, a fish trader, walked along the shore alone to view the wreckage of the broken ship. She found, to her delight, one of the boxes in which the sardines were packed. She resolved at once to eat the contents, for she too, like all the world at that time, liked the little fish. But although she tried as hard as she could, she was unable to open the box. She sat by the side of the sea and sang a song of lament, calling on anyone who could to open the box for her. She sang:
"I love sardines when they're boiled with beans And mixed with the sands of the sea."
Away out from the beach a skate-fish was resting on a sand-bar. Hearing the song of the maiden, he quickly swam towards the shore. When he came close enough to hear the words of the song and to know what the box contained, he swam away in great disgust, for he was cousin to the sardines in the box, and came from the same family tree as they. But he was too timid to try to punish the maiden. Then a bold merman heard the song. He had long looked for a land wife to live with him in his home under the sea; now he said, "Here at last is a shore maiden for me," for the voice of the singer was beautiful to him. So he went to his looking-glass to dress himself in the most genteel fashion. From bright clean sea-weeds and sea-leaves he quickly made himself a new suit, all green and yellow; and he covered his feet with bright-coloured shells, and his neck with pearls which the oyster gave him; and dressing himself carefully, he hastened in the direction of the song. But when he came close enough to hear the words and to know what the box contained, he remembered his oath at the great gathering of the fish, and although he loved the singer he swam hurriedly away. For, like the skate-fish, he too feared to try to punish the maiden.
The maiden was now sore distressed, for it was growing late and the moon was already far up in the sky. The box was still unopened, and the girl was hungry for the fish. Going to the edge of the sea, she knocked the box hard against a large rock that lay in the water, hoping thereby to break it open. But the box would not break. Now, it chanced that under the rock a large black lobster lay sleeping quietly after a long battle with an enemy in the sea. The tapping on the roof of his sleeping-place awoke him, and he rubbed his eyes and listened. The maiden was again singing her song:—
"Oh I love sardines when they're boiled with beans, And mixed with the sands of the sea. I am dying for some. Will nobody come And open this box for me?"
Then the Lobster remembered his oath at the great gathering of the fish. Unlike the skate-fish and the merman, he had no fear of the maiden, for he knew his power. He determined to punish her, and he resolved at once upon a crafty trick. He came out of his hiding place, and waving his claw politely he said, "Fair lady, I can open the box for you; give it to me and let me try." But when, in answer, she held the box out towards him in her hand, he grasped her by the wrist with his strong claw, and, holding her fast, he swam with her far out to sea. Where he went and what he did with her, no man knows. It is believed that he sold her to the merman who had long sought a shore-wife, and that she is still being slowly changed into a fish. One thing is certain,—she never came back to land. But on the first day of May she always appears on the water away off the coast of the Island; and if that day is fine and clear you can still always see her there. She holds in her hand a looking-glass in which in the sunlight she looks at herself to see if she is nearer to a fish than she was on May Day the year before when she last appeared in the sun; and she is combing her long hair which is now covered with pearls; and she looks with longing eyes to the shore and her old home. And sometimes on moonlight nights in May, when the wind is still and the sea is calm, the fishermen hear her strange sad song across the waters. They know then that she is lonely, and that she is singing her song to lure land-comrades for company to her side. And on these nights they stay on shore, for they know that if they venture out to sea she will seize them and carry them off for playmates to her home of bright shells far under the sea.

Title: I know if it's with you, it's gonna be all right.
Pairing: Andy Barber x Desi!Female Reader (Shreya)
Rating: 18+
Warnings: Please read this before reading this story. It's for people 18+ and contains sex.
Summary: Andy and Shreya enjoy a lovely afternoon together curled up on the sofa watching her favourite Bollywood movie. Things get heated and they take it to the bedroom.
A/N: Finally coming back from my big writer's block to post an Andy one shot. As an Indian, I enjoyed writing this Desi reader story. At the moment Andy Barber is my muse so you will get to see more of him in my upcoming one shots.
Indian/Desi words i use in the fic
Samosas: A snack, consisting of a deep-fried triangular turnover filled with vegetables (especially potatoes) or meat.
Jaan: Darling
Kal ho naa ho: Tomorrow may never come. Here is the link to the synopsis of the movie.
"Andy, I'm home," Shreya sings, entering the kitchen and placing the bags down on the table. She can hear Andy walking down the stairs, humming onto a Bollywood song Shreya got him addicted to.
"Hey jaan, did you have a great time with your mum," he asked, trying to take a peek in the bags to see what she brought back.
"I did; I think my mum loves you more than me," she says, pouting at him. Shreya takes the contents out of the bag to show Andy how much food her mum explicitly made for him.
Andy chuckles, seeing a Tupperware box filled with delicious samosas. He licks his lips, opens the lid and grabs one to eat. Shreya giggled, watching how excited her fiance was to eat samosas with chutney.
"These are delicious jaan; I must thank your mum," he says, eating another samosa.
"Maybe later you can ring her; I want to spend time with you," she explained, grabbing a napkin and wiping the excess sauce off his mouth.
"Ok, so what does my Jaan want to do," he let out, winking at her.
"Get your mind out of the gutter Andy," she giggled, looking at him in a grey t-shirt, blue hoodie and blue jogging bottoms. Shreya wondered how the simplest of clothes looked sexy on him.
"I wanna cuddle up with you while we watch a Bollywood movie. You know we haven't done that in a long time," she explained, wondering what movie he would enjoy.
"Sure, we can do that; any idea what you want to watch, Jaan," Andy chuckled, knowing it's going to be any movie from her top 3 movies list, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani or Kal Ho Naa Ho.
"Let's watch Kal Ho Naa Ho; I haven't seen it in ages," she mumbled, making Andy snicker; she only watched that movie two weeks ago.
"I will get the snacks; you set up the movie and bring the blankets," he said, watching as Shreya skipped out of the kitchen into the lounge. She grabbed the big cosy blanket stored away inside the big leather storage chest next to the sofa.
Shreya opened the blanket, fluffing it as she plopped herself on the sofa and draped the soft material over her body. Grabbing the tv remote next to her, she opened up Netflix and found the movie located in continued watching for Shreya.
Andy walked inside with a plate of samosas and a bowl of popcorn for them to share. He placed them in between them, going back to the kitchen to grab himself a beer and a glass of red wine for Shreya.
"I found some m&ms," Andy confessed, handing her the bag and watching as she opened it and poured the contents inside the bowl of popcorn. Shreya pressed play, watching as the movie showed the empire state building.
Just the sounds from the movie and eating were heard. She kept sneaking glances at Andy; it was turning her on as she watched him put food in his mouth and chew it. Who knew something as simple as eating for Shreya feeling tingly.
She cleared her throat, taking a sip of her wine, watching as Shahrukh Khan walked in with orange trousers on the screen. Her eyes couldn't help sneaking glances at Andy, who was smiling, his eyes sparkling, and his hair looked so soft and fluffy.
"I see you were peeking jaan," he chuckled, taking some popcorn and shoving it in his mouth. Shreya's cheeks heated up, her body feeling this tingling sensation when he spoke with a Boston accent.
"Come here, jaan," Andy whispered, patting his thighs. Shreya giggled, throwing the blanket off her body and jumping onto his lap.
"Hi," she sang, gazing at his eyes with a huge smile plastered on her face.
"I love you, Jaan," Andy winked at her, stretching his neck up to place a delicate kiss on her lips. She moaned, his beard tickling her skin, just how she liked it. Her hands are gripping on his shoulders so she doesn't fall off.
"Main Tumse Pyar karthee hoon," Shreya beamed out. Andy loved hearing her speak in Hindi. The first time he had heard her say it was when Shreya was on the phone with her mother. He bit on her bottom lip, his eyes staring into hers.
Andy squeezed her body tighter into his chest, his nose nuzzling into her recently washed hair. He could smell her coconut shampoo, making him remember their holiday to Kenya, where they had coconut water on the beach.
The song It's the time to disco came on, snapping them both out of their bubble. Shreya turned her head around to see the song play, shaking her arms, singing along to the song.
Andy smiled, watching as Shreya jumped off him and started to copy the moves while singing along to the song. His phone was lying on the sofa ledge next to him; Andy grabbed it and started recording, making her stop dancing.
"Babe, you better delete that recording," she said, walking over, trying to grab the phone off him so she could delete it herself.
"No, I won't, Jaan. I like watching you dance," he confessed, winking at her. Shreya blushed, her cheeks heating up as she looked at him, biting on her lip. She smiled and started to dance again, moving her hips to the beat.
Shreya sings the chorus pointing at Andy, asking him to join her. "It's the time to disco; It's the time to disco, Kaun mile Dekho kisko, It's the time to disco," Andy just smiled, feeling so much love and admiration for his fiancée.
He stroked his beard, taking a swig of his beer, looking at her dance, swinging her hips from side to side. Andy watched her sing the words; of course, she knew them off by heart. Shreya has seen the movie countless times with him since they dated.
"Babe, come on, join me," she said, pulling her hand out for him. Andy enjoyed watching her have a good time but also missed her touch, her scent and the feeling of her body up against his.
Andy took another swig of his beer, standing up and taking his hand in hers. Shreya showed him some bhangra moves, telling Andy to copy what she was doing. He chuckled, trying to mirror her movies, but no way matched hers.
Shreya stopped dancing, grabbing the remote to forward the movie to one of her favourite songs, the title track. She knew this song would be more straightforward for Andy to dance to. The music started to play, and she put her hand out for him to join her in slow dancing.
His arm snaked around her waist, pulling her into his chest. Shreya giggled her hand on his chest, looking at him with a massive smile.
"I love you jaan, can't wait to marry you, and you finally become Mrs Shreya Barber," he let out, slowly swaying his body with hers to the song.
"Andy," she whispered, her voice being croaky, eyes welling up as she glanced at him. Shreya sniffed, her face getting damp from her tears. He smiles at her, his thumb drying away her tears.
His hands are placed on either side of her face; Andy leans in to kiss her, pulling her closer to him. He claims her mouth again, hungry and intense until her knees gave in. Shreya could feel her whole body tingle, his heat radiating onto her.
Her fingers slipped under his shirt, his skin smooth and muscular. Andy has been hitting the gym hard lately, releasing his frustration on the punching bag due to a troubling situation with a case. Shreya loved sleeping on his chest, listening to the breaths softly as they would drift off to sleep.
Har Pal Yahan Jee Bhar Jiyo, Jo Hai Samaa, Kal Ho Na Ho - Every moment on the earth, live life to the fullest. Tomorrow you may not have the same time as you have today.
She traced the outline of his abs with her fingertips, smiling to herself. He does look good, she thought, wondering if he could take the hoodie and t-shirt off.
"What are you thinking about jaan," Andy's voice was sweet like honey as he spoke. The song ended, making the room get quieter, and all that could be heard was dialogue being said through the tv.
Shreya didn't say anything, just playing with the zipper of his hoodie, slowly pulling it down. Andy smirked, looking at her, the hoodie coming off his shoulders now and putting it on the sofa. He made the grey t-shirt look sexy and showed off his bulging arms.
"I can see you are staring again, jaan," he chuckled, looking at her with a grin.
"You're so handsome; I can't help staring at you," she mumbled, looking at him with hungry eyes. Shreya tugs on his t-shirt, trying to pull it off him. Andy didn't say anything but wink at her as he pulled his arms up, helping her discard the top.
Shreya scans his torso, biting her bottom lip to see how defined he looks. She couldn't believe he was soon going to be her husband. She moved closer, putting her hands on his chest to feel how hot he was.
"You ok," he softly spoke, looking at her and admiring him with such love. Leaning up, she placed her lips on his and gave him a sensual kiss telling him she was ready.
Andy wrapped his arms around her, pulling her body close to his chest so he could pick up and take her upstairs to bed. She wrapped her legs around his waist, her arms around his neck so she wouldn't fall.
"Mr Barber," she giggled as he threw her onto the bed. Andy took his jogging bottoms and boxers off, crawling on top of her to attack her lips with his.
His hands were on both sides of her face, pecking her lips a few times. He smiled, slowly making the kiss slower and filled with passion. Shreya closed her eyes, her hands holding onto his arms.
Andy's beard rubbed against her cheeks, making Shreya moan and squeeze his arms. The kiss got more intense; his tongue slipped inside, fighting dominance with hers. He couldn't help but glance up at her; her face flushes, enjoying the kiss.
Shreya pulls back from the kiss, taking a breather and fluttering her eyelids.
"That was," she was about to finish her sentence when he came closer and put his finger on her lips and whispered,
"Shh jaan," he said, moving down to grab her right boob to his mouth to suck on. Shreya yelped, looking at him; he bit her nipple a few times then went back to suck the breast. Andy's hand moves to squeeze her left boob, watching as she squeals at his cold hand touching her skin.
"Babe," she says, heavily breathing as she looks into his eyes.
"Jaan relaxes," he whispers, taking his hand and caressing her face. "I got you," he says, knowing how needy she looks with hungry eyes. Andy went back to attacking her lips with his; he could feel the warm sensation flying from one another.
"Babe," she says, yearning for him to touch her in more places. Andy smirked, his hand stroking her cheek before slowly moving joa fingers down her chest to feel her wet center.
His fingers glided up and down her heated centre watching her eyes squeeze shut at the sensation. "Oh, fuck," she moaned as he dipped two fingers inside. Those fat fingers with the engagement ring sent her off the edge.
"Babe," she yelled, her body feeling tingly. Those fingers going deep inside with the cold band got her coming quickly. Andy smirked; he knew what would set her body off; ever since she saw him wear the ring on his finger, she became feral.
"Jaan," he said hoarsely, looking at her body as his fingers moved slightly to give her another sensation. Andy rubbed her pussy again; the band gave her different emotions each time. "Wait till we are married, Jaan: the wedding band will get you cumming for days," Andy spoke, leaning up to kiss her lips hearing her moan into him.
"Babe," she said, gripping onto his shoulders, staring at him with pure lust. "I need you inside me," she said, gasping. Andy sneered, moving his fingers out of her pussy, seeing how much cum was on it. He sucked his fingers clean, grabbing his dick and giving it a few strokes before entering her tight cunt.
He grabbed her thighs, spreading them wider so he could get deep inside her. He thrust his hips back and forward, watching as Shreya's boobs bounced and her eyes squeezed tight.
Andy squeezed her thighs, leaving fingerprints on the skin. His eyes looked up to see Shreya moaning; that sexy moan turned his dick harder. Soon after, he felt his dick get coated with her cum, and Andy smiled, knowing soon he would be spent.
He grunted louder; his thrust started getting sloppier. Shreya held onto his arms, watching him ride her so fast. She loved to see him come; it was something to enjoy. More loud grunts escaped Andy's mouth; Shreya placed a few kisses on his pecs as she felt her pussy get coated in his cum.
Andy sighed; he was finally spent slowly laying his body on top of hers. Shreya beamed; her hands moved to scratch the back of his head. He moaned, nuzzling his head between her boobs which was his safe place.
"Babe," she whispered in his ear as he lifted his head and looked into her eyes.
"Yes, Jaan," he mumbles sleepily, looking at her with such admiration.
"I found a couple of wedding venues; you want to have a look," she softly spoke, stroking his beard as Shreya heard Andy mumble a yes. She gradually got off from under him, grabbing her iPad.
"Hey, don't go to sleep," she let out, shaking his body to wake up. Andy muttered a few phrases, rubbing his eyes and now sitting up to watch her iPad. They went through countless websites, looking at pictures when Andy stopped her and inquired,
"Jaan, all these venues are in Boston. Don't you want to get married in India?" Andy explained, looking at her eyes sparkled at the idea.
"It has been my dream to get married in India, but honey, it will be such a headache to get things sorted," she spoke softly with sadness in her eyes.
"Look at me, Jaan," Andy let out, holding her hand in his. "I want to marry you anywhere, even if it's at your home, you grew up. We can get a wedding planner to help you and take some of the burdens off," Andy said softly, leaning in to peck her lips a few times.
"Why are you so good to me," she confessed
with a croak in her voice. She couldn't help but let a few tears fall down her face. He smiled; his thumb whipped the tears away.
"I wouldn't have asked you to be my wife if I didn't love you so much. You mean the world to me; let's get married in India," he said, grabbing the iPad and searching for venues in India now. Shreya smiled, resting her head on his shoulder, looking at him, talking about the first venue he saw.
"Babe, it will cost a lot," she said, looking at the price of the first venue. Andy looked down at her telling her it was ok,
"Jaan, ever since we started dating. I knew you were the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Since day one, I started saving some money aside for when we finally get married," he said, grabbing his phone to show how much he saved into his savings account.
"Holy shit," she shouted, looking at how much Andy saved. Shreya was so excited; she put the iPad and phone away and climbed onto his, and started to make out with him while grinding his dick on her ass.
"Slow down, Jaan, we have all night to make love," Andy muttered as Shreya smiled, grabbing his face and kissing her lips so hard the beard gave her burns of pleasure.

Cap: ok
Steve starts talking strategies and Clint and Natasha try to stay awake but can't so they end up passed out on the couch tangled together

Listed: Dr. Pete Larson
Dr. Pete Larson runs Dagoretti Records now, he’s gotten there by an unusually long and winding road. Earlier in his career, Larson fronted 25 Suaves and Couch and ran BULB records. He also trained as an epidemiologist and spent time in Kenya studying the transmission of malaria. While in Kenya, he developed an interest in a lute-like eight-stringed instrument called a nyatiti and studied it with the master player Oduor Nyagweno. All these interests collide in a striking first album from Dr. Pete Larson and His Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band, where the nyatiti “cuts through a haze of electric rock distortion, pinging rhythmically and restlessly against floating euphorias of ululating vocals,” per Jennifer Kelly’s review. Here he lists some favorites from several continents.
I have been asked to create one of these lists for Dusted and here’s what I came up with. Making these lists is kind of difficult. I have a hard time remembering what I’ve been listening to at any moment, but here is a collection of old and new that get frequent airplay in my home. I play a Kenyan lyre, so this heavily leans toward lyre and harps and East African music in general, with some other choice cuts thrown in.
Musicians Of The National Dance Company Of Cambodia — Homrong (Real World Records)
youtube
I think I got this record (CD) back in the early 90s when I was selling music to Caroline Records. A friend sent me a box of CD promos, most of which wasn’t very interesting, but fortunately, this one was included. I don’t really know anything about Cambodian music, but for some reason, this collection of mid-tempo Cambodian court jamz plays every couple of months. Lots of weird sort of lurching rhythms and chorus singing with an erhu like instrument over it. A great listen.
Maleem Mahmoud Ghania w/ Pharoah Sanders — Trance of the Seven Colors
The Trance Of Seven Colors by Maleem Mahmoud Ghania w/ Pharoah Sanders
Trance inducing this is. Maleem Mahmoud Ghania is (was) one of the 20th century masters of Moroccan Gnawa music, a sort of spiritual, bass-heavy, rolling kind of music of Morocco. Any recording by Maleem Mahmoud is going to impress, but this mash of up of Gnawa with the great Pharoah Sanders is another level. If you are familiar with Gnawa music, it is a little disorienting to hear Sanders howl over the slow burn trance jamz but you are quickly drawn into what a perfect matchup this ended up being. Released on CD in the 90s, it fortunately has finally gotten a proper vinyl release.
Momoyama Harue — “Lullaby for the mother demon’s baby” (桃山晴衣* – 鬼の女の子守唄)
youtube
I was playing the shamisen for a while (a three stringed lute from Japan) and found Momoyama Harue as part of my research. Shamisen is kind of a folky instrument for drinking parlors and entertainment of old Japan. The instrument and the music was nearly dead but saw a revival in the 1960s, similar to folk revivals in the US that brought the banjo back. Momoyama, however, was kind of an outlier, more arty than folky, and more poetry than song. Rather than box the music in an imagined past or try to hopelessly smash it into amplified rock music, she pushed it forward, blending it with ambient synth along with Indian and Middle Eastern musics. One of her best collaborations was with the great Egyptian oud player Hamza el Din that was nearly dead until the 1960s. All of the songs on this record are haunting (as the title suggests), but these tracks with el Din are truly singular. I have been searching for a vinyl copy of this record for years; one day I’ll get lucky.
Lucas Odote — “J. Oreng”
Nyatiti Singles Volume 1 by Lucas Odote
I spent several years in Kenya learning to play the nyatiti, an eight stringed lyre historically played by a group of people in an area around Lake Victoria. I also spent time collecting records, searching for hours in dusty boxes for Kenyan traditional music records. One of my best finds was at Jimmy’s Records in Kenyatta Markets, this record by the great Nairobi based nyatiti player Lucas Odote. Most nyatiti records are just a guy playing solo and more ethno than funky. But this one seems to be Lucas teaming up with what I think to be Nairobi funksters, the Loki Toki Tok band. At least that’s what I can guess. My copy is beat to hell. It took some doing to get some sound out of it, but this is one of my faves in my collection.
Siti Muharam — Siti of Unguja (Romance Revolution On Zanzibar)
Siti of Unguja (Romance Revolution On Zanzibar) by Siti Muharam
I swear I saw Siti Muharam sing on the deck of a hotel bar while vacation in Zanzibar several years ago. I can’t be certain, but I am pretty sure it was her singing for the band I saw. The traditional form of Taarab music is something to be experienced. Taarab music comes from the Arab coast of East Africa, and is this fantastic mix of local feel and Arab sounds, overlapped with heart wrenching songs of lost love and longing. I think there are some foreigners involved in this production, but this is an excellent document of Taarab music at its best.
Grandmaster Masese — “Orogena rwa Baba”
Grandmaster Masese: New African Soundz Singles No.1 by Grandmaster Masese
It might be gauche to put records from your own label on a list like this, but I am first a music fan and second a musician and third a music seller… so this one stays. G-master is a friend of mine from Kenya and one of the best humans I know. One of just a handful of people who play the Obokano, a giant 8 stringed lyre that emits an unforgettable sub-bass buzzing sound and this was his first release in the US and one of my favorite records ever. We recorded this in his kitchen in Nairobi with just a couple of mics over dinner. G is a cool guy. You should listen to his music.
Yagi Michiyo — Seventeen
youtube
Yagi is another Japanese musician who specializes in what one would think is a “traditional” instrument, but who brings much more to the table than one would expect. Yagi is a koto player by training. You have probably heard koto in the background music for scenes of Japan in American movies. The version you hear there is mostly lifeless and flat, kind of like a plastic chair in the corner. Yagi, however, plays the 17 string bass koto, invented in the 1920s or so, to try and give new life to the instrument. Yagi creates weird percussive, dissonant music that I can’t really get enough of.
Asnakech Worku (featuring Hailu Mergia) — Asnakech
Asnakech by Asnakech Worku
Asnakech Worku was a lot of things; pioneer, actress, but most notably a female Krar player. Certainly there might have been other female Krar players in Ethiopia at the time, but Krar players are mostly men. The Krar is a lyre from Ethiopia, mostly played with one hand, though there are several playing styles out there. Worku plays haunting sounds on her Krar on this record, backed up by famous Ethiopian keyboardist Hailu Mergia, who really needs no intro.
Ogola Opot — “Domtila Ogola”
youtube
This will probably be the only 78 on this list. Ogola Opot is considered the grandfather of the Kenyan nyatiti, coming to prominence in the 1960s and 70s, and creating the genre we know as Siaya style “traditional nyatiti.” If someone asks me what nyatiti music sounds like, this is probably where I would have people start. I include this first because it is a great record and second because it was my holy grail for a while (though I always have new holy grails) and managed to find a pristine copy for sale from a place in France recently. I am not going to say how much I paid for it.
Sosena Gebre Eyesus — S/T (Little Axe Records)
Sosena Gebre Eyesus by Sosena Gebre Eyesus
I bought this record off the net because I am a huge fan of Begena music, this haunting, trance inducing music from Ethiopia that appears to be the go-to for Ethiopian Christians… but this record explained nothing of that. Just a picture of a lady with a begena and no other info…. It took me a while to put together what the record was and where it came from, but the sounds contained within are impeccable. Just 40 minutes of weird undersea tones on a giant bass lyre.

Our Favorite Movies, Starring Los Angeles!
This list was compiled by the L.A. Conservancy’s Last Remaining Seats Committee—the volunteers who select the LRS lineup each year, and help produce the film series. Rest assured, they know their movies—as well as their classic L.A. architecture! If you’re pining to visit the places that make our city special, consider watching one of these classic L.A. stories—and enjoy seeing them on the small screen, instead.
Clueless (1995)
Streaming: N/A
“This was such a great coming of age movie that it took me years to realize it was an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma.” One of my favorite scenes is when Cher is being robbed at the Circus Liquor store, on a bad day I like to drive to that location and quote “You don’t understand. This is an Alaia… It’s like a totally important designer.” -Helen
Double Indemnity (1944)
Streaming: Hulu
Los Angeles locations plus a great Film Noir story. You can’t go wrong with a movie that has lines like “How could I have known that murder can sometimes smell like honeysuckle.” -Scott
La La Land (2016)
Streaming: YouTube
Not a historic movie, but is there any film that better captures the beauty of living in the city of angels? A musical with songs that will keep you cheery while sitting in traffic, La La Land is peak modern Los Angeles. -Sam
Bosch (2014 - Present)
Streaming: Netflix
Michael Connelly's LAPD homicide detective, Harry Bosch, travels all over L.A. There is enough detail (in the books) to follow his travels. He lives on Woodrow Wilson just off Mulholland. He eats at Chinese Kitchen, Nickel Diner, Musso and Franks, Pacific Dining Car, etc. -Paul
“M” (1951)
Streaming: N/A, but on DVD on Amazon
Great shots of 1951 Bunker Hill before it was redeveloped, plus, this is a great atmospheric Film Noir. -Celeste
Devil In A Blue Dress (1995)
Streaming: Amazon Prime Video, and also on STARZ
Noir Los Angeles in the 1950s, but from an African American perspective.
-Celeste
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)
Streaming: Amazon Prime
I know it isn’t an older film though it completely changed the meaning of “once upon a time” for us… -Caroline
Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
Steaming: N/A
“Kiss Me Deadly” is one of my top ten movies. It also features some scenes with great footage of Bunker Hill and Angel’s Flight going up and down. Later, the world seems to come to end, but not without a lot of tough guys talking wise first and dames manipulating them behind their backs. -Tom Dailey
Inherent Vice (2014)
Streaming: Amazon Prime
One of my favorite recent discoveries! It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, and a pre-Fantastic Beasts Katherine Waterston. It features so many great L.A. locations. Director Paul Thomas Anderson loves LA and it comes through on film. -Traci
The Exiles (1961)
Streaming: N/A
Depicts transplanted American Indians from SW reservations, living in the Bunker Hill area of Los Angeles during the late 1950's. Directed by Kent MacKenzie, a USC film student, it was lost for 50 years and rediscovered by Director Thom Anderson in his movie "Los Angeles Plays Itself". It is important to me because of my Native American roots. -Elizabeth Night
Nightcrawler (2014)
Streaming: Amazon, Google Play, ITunes, VUDU
Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), a driven young man desperate for work, discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem. -Tracy Jackson
The Neon Demon (2016)
Streaming: Google Play, YouTube
Jesse (Elle Fanning) moves to Los Angeles just after her 16th birthday to launch a career as a model. The head of her agency tells the innocent teen that she has the qualities to become a top star. Jesse soon faces the wrath of ruthless vixens who despise her fresh-faced beauty. On top of that, she must contend with a seedy motel manager and a creepy photographer. As Jesse starts to take the fashion world by storm, her personality changes in ways that could help her against her cutthroat rivals. I love this film because it’s very weird but beautifully shot. It’s a slow-building thriller that shows LA in a creepy, neon light! -Megan Bennett
The Big Sleep (1946)
Streaming: Available to rent on Amazon Prime, Google Play, YouTube
P.I. Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) is hired by a wealthy general to discover who is blackmailing his daughter over gambling debts and stop them. Marlowe finds himself deep within a web of love triangles, blackmail, murder, gambling, and organized crime, not to mention falling in love with the general’s other daughter, Vivian (Lauren Bacall). Marlowe goes all over L.A. looking for clues, including the Hollywood Public Library and up into the Hollywood Hills. Author Raymond Chandler was rumored to have based the General’s home on the Greystone Mansion. This film is one of my favorites because it has the best dialogue I’ve ever heard in a film. The one-liners and quick exchanges are awesome, and every scene with Bogie and Bacall is exquisite. - Liz Highstrete
Chinatown (1974)
Streaming: Amazon Prime, Hulu, iTunes, Google Play
I know this title is radioactive due to its connection with Polanski. But, as the recent book by Sam Wesson, The Big Goodbye, points out, Chinatown was a significant collaboration of many creative forces, including Robert Towne, Jack Nicholson, Robert Evans, Faye Dunaway, John Huston, Diane Ladd, John Alonzo, Richard Sybert, and others. Their work can still be admired. Plus, there are scenes shot on location throughout L.A. city and county. https://la.curbed.com/maps/chinatown-filming-location-map -Tom
L. A. Confidential (1997)
Streaming: Netflix
L.A. Confidential is a 1950’s Hollywood crime drama of corrupt cops and mobster bad-guys filmed at historic locations across Los Angeles. In particular, the movie showcases Richard Neutra’s “Lovell Health House” on Dundee Road in Los Feliz as the supposed home of the local pimp, who runs a prostitution ring of women who have taken on the appearances of famous movie stars. Kim Basinger stars as Veronica Lake look-alike. Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce star as three very different cops. Danny DeVito writes the local tabloid news. Originally built and named for a health-and-fitness guru, the Lovell Health House has just been put on the market, according to Curbed Los Angeles, and the current owner “wants to find a buyer who will appreciate the home’s architecture—and either preserve it or restore it”. Any takers? -Leslie

What is it?
He’d shown up at your workmate Harriet’s Halloween do in a First World War helmet and officer’s jacket thrown carelessly over a t shirt and jeans. This was the first thing you’d noticed. Well, that and the fact that it wasn’t some cheap costume ordered online. The round helmet and coat were unusually accurate - as you took another sip of the warm and flat beer you’d been clutching for an hour, you wondered if he was that dedicated to historical accuracy or just an insufferable nerd.
“Nice hat”
“Sorry?” The din of the crowded party was still loud even in the kitchen - Harriet’s screeches at her boyfriend about spilt wine echoed down the corridor. You smirked a bit and answered, a bit louder this time.
“I said you’ve got a nice hat there.”
He raised his eyebrows towards the brim. “Oh yeah - this old thing. Figured it would work for tonight.”
“Where’d you pick it up?”, you asked. “The Imperial War Museum?”
He laughed and moved a bit closer to you. “Nah, security there is too tight these days. I actually borrowed it from a friend at work. Harriet invited me last minute and you know...didn’t want to get panicked about putting something together.”
You noticed that there was almost a hint of a blush in his cheeks, but then again, Harriet had been lazy about replacing the bulb in one of the overhead lights and maybe you secretly wanted him to react to your teasing.
“Where on earth do you work that you can pick up a World War One helmet?” You took another sip of beer.
“Hah - yeah. Bit odd isn’t it? I work in films.” He had taken it off and it was turning it clockwise in a circle.
You nodded, slightly impressed.
“George, by the way.” He had stuck his free hand out and motioned towards the nearly empty glass in yours. “Want another one?”
And then there were too many another one’s to count and he turned to you in a cramped living room, his shoulders moving back and forth to the song on the tinny speaker and said “nice hat”, his fingers pinching the brim of your witch hat. And if you had to pin it down to a second, that was the moment that you knew that you found yourself wandering into the deep end of the pool you’d tried to keep yourself out of for so long. A sort of warmth grew in your chest as you closed your eyes and laughed at his poor attempt to flirt. It wasn’t the shitty lager or dancing in a room warmed by too many bodies. It was something else.
Later that week, numbers exchanged but still an uncomfortable silence between you and him, you went to the cinema with a friend. And there he was, in that unusually accurate helmet, running across that screen through war. He forgot to mention that work meant starring in a major motion picture loaded with award season buzz and you shouldn’t be shocked when you unexpectedly saw him in a trailer for the film.
After the movie, you sent him a text. I want to know more about you and that stupid helmet. Let’s get a drink?
I’ve been anxious to tell you more about it. Sounds wonderful.
And here you are. A year and a bit later and the man in the helmet, George, is sitting across from you and asking for the bill at Mon Plasir, the tiny french restaurant you loved in Covent Garden. That man in the helmet became just George quick and fast and you won’t admit to anyone, but you think you fell in love with him for the first time when you brought him here for a fourth date; maybe it was the way that he wouldn’t stop speaking with the waiter in terrible broken French about how delicious the escargot was. But it was so much more than that. It was the way he got excited about the little things you liked - like this cramped French bistro that wasn’t necessarily that great but you still loved it anyways for its 60+ year history and the way you could eventually charm the waiters out of grumpily slamming the bread basket on the table.
“Shall we go?” He asks with a small smile, his eyes crinkling just the slightest bit.
You finish the last sip of wine in a gulp and nod in agreement - “Sure. Let’s take the tube home though. I need to walk a bit”
“Oof, yeah. Definitely need to walk that duck off.” He says, stretching his arms out in front of him and miming a round belly. You push the chair back, and he stands to help you with your coat.
It’s hard to be annoyed with him in the dim light of the restaurant - his hair, back to your preferred state of messy curls, golden in the candle light and his eyes heavy with the promise of sleep after the late dinner. But still. A man as handsome as George can’t always use that as an excuse to get off easy.
“As long as you don’t quack the entire way home.”
He rolls his eyes at your attempt of a terrible joke.
Outside, it’s cold. Early December has brought an expected chill in the wind and he wraps his arm around your shoulder as the two of you begin to silently walk through the maze of Covent Garden. After a few minutes, he lets his arm fall, trying to slow down his pace to match your shorter legs.
“Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?” He looks back towards you.
“What do you mean tell you what’s wrong?”
“Well, something is up.”
You speed up a bit. “Nothing’s wrong. I’m just tired.”
“C’mon.”
“Honestly, George. I’m fine.”
“Fine is a pretty broad description.”
“It’s nearly midnight. What did you expect? We went for a meal at ten at night on a Tuesday. I’m tired.”
He stops in front of you, blocking your way on the pavement. “You did that thing all through dinner.”
“What thing?”
“You know what I’m talking about. That thing you do when you’re upset about something and you stare at the middle of my eyebrows to try and trick me into thinking that you’re making eye contact with me.”
You sigh, annoyed at yourself for smiling at his attention to detail. “How do you know I do that?”
He smirks back at you. It should be pretty obvious at this point that I can’t stop looking at your face so it’s not hard to notice when you’re pretending to look at mine.”
You walk around him, shoving your hands in the pockets of your coat and pulling it closer to you.
“I’m not really in the mood to discuss it.”
It. That it that you couldn’t really name. That lingering feeling, underneath the warmth in your chest, that this whole thing - George - might be too good and it might not last. There wasn’t anything to actually give you some proof of that. After the first month, you understood that. You also knew that this relationship was going to take work. He wasn’t always going to be around. He was going to take roles that left him silent and distant when he came home late from the set. There would be months long stretches where being in a relationship meant a few weekends of naked and desperate in bed for as long as two of you could manage or laying on the couch, trying to capture as much normalcy as you could. But you knew this when you signed on for the long haul. And you had your own life too. Your own family, your own friends, your own career. But then those lines began to blur and you found yourself knowing where the forks and knives were in his parents kitchen when his mum asked you to be a dear and set the table. And George knew that your father didn’t really like Indian food so he shouldn’t suggest it as an idea for a family dinner again. Your friends blended into his group of friends during long pint fueled nights out at the Tiger and in the morning afterwards, he’d slip out of bed, pulling his boxers up. He always managed to wake you up though - George seemed to lose his coordination when hungover. And he’d smile back at you and mumble ‘morning, lovely’ and promise a tea in bed delivered to you in 5 minutes or less. And that is it. Even if he forgets to close the kitchen cupboards or wipe up the toothpaste in the sink after spitting it out. That is the it that you don’t want to lose because you’re not sure if it’s just simply too good to be real. How would you fill the space he left if he was gone?
A stranger does a double take at George as they pass and he behind him to make sure that they aren’t stopping.
“Look. I know you’re not, but I’ve just got back from Ireland and I think we should probably sort this out. I don’t want to come home on a bad note, you know?”
You don’t respond.
“Is it about me being gone? The film’s wrapped. You know that. I’m all yours now.”
And this is also it. The second layer of that lingering doubt. You never planned on being with an actor. Fuck, you didn’t even know Harriet knew actors. The two of you worked in a normal person office - how did you get so deep with an actor? You had no clue as to navigate these waters. George didn’t want to be famous. He just wanted to practice his craft. He wanted to make art with other people who wanted to create something beautiful and that was beautiful to you when he spent the first morning after, lying in bed, sheets at his waist, rambling on about the importance of collaboration in film. But all that beauty and earnestness comes with a touch of fame and that meant a fierce longing to keep what you had private. You and George agreed that it didn’t feel quite right yet to attend every public event yet. But he wanted you there for the ones that mattered to him. So, you arrived separately but sat together, his hand clammy in yours. You found that when you leaned into his neck and whispered “don’t forget to breathe, darling”, his nervous tension eased up and the creases of his suit smoothed out. And then there was the possibility. The possibility that he would find someone else - there were all those costars to compete with, the actresses gliding down red carpets, journalists flirting through interview questions. And you were just..you.. You snored a bit too loud and looked like a mole rat without mascara. How could you compare to what he had available?
“George. Really.”
He pulls you into the threshold of a closed greeting card shop. “No. We need to talk about this. You were like the other weekend. Don’t think I didn’t notice”
Sucking your cheeks in, you reach for a cigarette in your purse. He fumbles in his pockets and finds a matchbook, lighting it for you.
“Why are you so fucking observant sometimes?”
“Well...I mean...I pretend to be other people so..”
Exasperated, you give him a slight push on the shoulder.
“It’s because I love you,” he continues, “And when something’s off with us, I worry. I worry about you.”
You lower the cigarette. He meets your eyes - silent and waiting for an answer.
“Maybe I’m worried.”
“About what?”
You frantically gesture at the space between the two of you. “This. This whole thing.”
“What? Us?”
“Yeah. Us. I dunno, George. You think we’ll be ok?”
“How much bloody wine did you drink?”
You sigh and take a drag of your cigarette. “No I’m being serious! It’s just...what if…”
“What if what?”
“What if at some point you dread coming back here because you don’t want to come back here to me and there’s no way of us making it through.”
He takes your hand in yours and gently pulls you closer. You grind the cigarette out with your boot.
“You had me worried for a second. I thought you were asking something serious like what if the moon exploded…”
“George!”
“Ok ok. I’m sorry.”
You can feel your jaw clenching. “I’m not being silly. I’m nervous.”
“Well, you shouldn’t be.”
“Why?
He shakes his head a bit, and reaches his arm past your shoulder, propping himself against the brick wall of the store.
“If I didn’t think this was going to work, why would I ask you to move in with me?”
Wiggling from underneath his frame, your eyes widen. “You haven’t asked me to move in with you.”
“Well. Yeah. I’m doing it now.”
“Ok.”
“I want you to move in with me because I’m tired of coming back to an empty flat and I want to come back to wherever you are. And I want you to be there with your stack of magazines that you keep buying and never reading in the home that we share. And if I didn’t love you... If I didn’t want to spend the next how many ever years I have left on this planet with you and those fucking magazines, would I ask you to move in with me?”
You lean into his chest. His heart is moving fast and slow all at the same time - the beats radiating from beneath the canvas of his jacket.
“Ok.”
He laughs and wraps his arms around you. “Ok? That’s all you’ve got to say after all that?”
“Well yeah. And we are living south of the river. I love you but I’m not living in fucking Kentish Town.”
His laughs vibrate against your mouth as he presses his lips into yours. You open your lips slightly and he deepens the kiss, pushing himself against you and the wall.
And this is it. This is the it that you won’t lose because you have to lose yourself - all that fear- in some way and give into knowing that he will keep you. That this will work. This is an it that will work out.
“Can we get a cab to yours?”, he whispers into your ear, his breath warm and heavy. “Dunno if I can stand the time it’s gonna take to take the tube and the bus.”
You smile as he moves his lips down your jawline towards your neck. “Absolutely.”
He spins out of the threshold, his arm waving frantically at oncoming traffic. Looking back, he says, “Might not be able to make it all the way to the bedroom….”
“The stairwell is just as romantic.”

February 2020
I managed to use my iPad as a second monitor for my computer. So tech savvy. Yay me!
Joking about developing a sex-based cardio programme with Manu. Powerfucking! Might help against aggression as well.
A late night phone call with Tom. Not saying much.
Making a huge pot of my grandmother’s signature veggie stew.
More Bon Appétit test kitchen videos. Chris recreating tacos. Claire making Ben&Jerry’s. Priya making her mum’s Indian curries.
Writing a letter to Lena. Drawing upside down bats (which makes them look like they’re having a wicked dance-off). Just the act of writing. I thoroughly enjoy looking at my handwriting.
Using the Salted Coconut handscrub by Lush. Especially now that I wash my hands so often when we’re working with clay at school. I feel like the peeling triggers some pressure points on my palms.
That Saturday productivity high. Cooking and preparing heaps of stuff, cleaning the windows, doing laundry.
Painting my nails like an expressionist artist.
Some portrait studies. Accidentally drawing Sirius Black.
Being really motivated to improve my Spanish. Working with Lorena, the Duolingo app and even starting my own grammar/vocabulary book.
This ultra quirky ASMR video. Also: watching videos with Erin an her boyfriend Chris. It’s amazing how well they work together. How you can almost feel their connection, how similar they are.
Carrot cake oats.
Seeing the The Darkness live again, this time with Margit. Justin’s outfit and personality, singing along, especially to Time of my Life, the band’s traditional first song after the show.
Meeting Chris. Having a Bramblette cocktail at Pusser’s. I like that place. Feels very old-timey with a rowing boat right under the ceiling. We made out in front of a tiger slide in a toy store window on our way to the next bar.
Peeling fresh carrots.
Pickling onions and making kimchi. My fermentation game is strong these days!
Looking through Dominik’s sketchbook. I loved the tree whose bark resembled a mole burrow with its underground tunnel system.
The flu. Yes, really. Fewer pupils at school. Quiet times. I’m actually surprisingly healthy. I’d guess my probiotics must play a role here… Who knows.
More sourdough experiments. Writing about it (DELICACY - a haiku. Oven-warm sourdough / salted butter, alpine cheese / and a strawberry).
Finding a really interesting list of SanFran hippie era book recommendations at the end of Robin Sloan’s Ajax Penumbra: 1969. In the mood to read Maya Angelou, Tom Wolfe, Jack Kerouac, Richard Brautigan.
Even more beautiful books: I really enjoyed Die weiße Stadt by Karolina Ramqvist, a feminist author from Sweden, and the graphic novel version of To Kill a Mockingbird. But two books that literally (well, figuratively obviously) blew my mind were Circe by Madeline Miller (mythology, loneliness, animals and plants, magic and monsters, some desperate kind of feminism, independence and strength) and Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (magical realms, university setting, psychological depth, unexpected twists and turns). I haven’t read anything comparable in a very long time and I desperately hope that there’s more to come from these authors.
A beach collecting all the world’s single socks in The Magicians. Oh and of course seeing them break the moon. What a sight. The show is super confusing, obnoxious and absolutely fabulous at the same time. Best example: the Freaky Friday szene in which Margo and Eliot switch bodies. I love how the actors took on each other’s speech patterns and behaviour.
A new addition to my colour vocabular: celadon (a greyish green; there is a type of ceramics you’ll only see in this colour which is not surprising since the shade provides such an interesting contrast to the the earthy, rusty orange of burnt clay.)
Manu telling me that he had rarely seen people with more joy in their eyes than me (“Ich habe schon Freude in deinen Augen gesehen! So ein Leuchten kann man nicht simulieren.”) after complaining about being bored and lifeless. / Making curry with or, well, for him the other night. Drinking Liqueur 43 with cinnamon and milk. Playing the Jackbox party games for which you can use your phone as a controller.
Finding myself in a well-known sitation from the past. Lying in Frank’s bed in the early morning hours, not that tired yet, when he starts talking about his life and his depression. In English, obviously, because that’s our emotional filter. Relating, since I feel quite similar. Coming up with a suggestion for a reciprocal support system. Let’s see what we can do for each other.
Looking at travel photographs. The sea, the cenotes. Longing to go back to Mexico or Australia. Diving. Taking it all in.
Dreaming of my grandmother talking about her biggest regrets in life. Weirdly she was in a little bundle under a coffee table, much like Voldemort in the last Harry Potter movie.
My weird, weird brain. How both pleasure and pain enhance my sense of smell and increase my brain activity, almost causing hallucinations and fixations on ideas. Like geometric shapes in gloomy off-colours and a beige silicon-like surface the other night. All I could think of was a benchscraper.
Blue eyeliner.
Brainstorming three-letter-words with Frank since I’m thinking of getting personalised Nike Blazers. Sad cat. Yes but. Dat ass. Why tho.
Flying squirrels. Watching them wobble through the air. How they look like cute exhibitionist when they’re extending their limbs and thus stretching their, well, let’s just call it wings.
The fact that red cabbage has an intricate pattern like brain convolutions when you cut it open.
Talking to Sonja for the first time in over two years. What a strange person. Interesting, too. At least in homeopathic doses.
Ripe strawberries and nectarines. Oh my god. I love fruit.
Meeting Eve at Pub Quiz. She identifies as female, loves swing dance, used to be an animator and I love her style. Also, I realised that really like Betty. And Dennis wasn’t mean to me for once. I love my nerd friends <3 And I learned that Starbucks was named after the first mate in Moby Dick! Also, coincidentally they asked a question about the city where To Kill a Mockingbird takes place (Maycombe, Alabama) after I had read it the week before.
Inviting Lorena to the Botanical Gardens. I always feel very happy and very much myself when I’m there. I sometimes wish I was a gardener. Lorena was late so I walked along the Spring Path outside and it might have been the first time I’ve seen a brussels sprouts plant. Inside I learned lots of Spanish words and marveled at the incredible butterflies. The huge yellow one right behind the entrance was my favourite. Its delicate feelers were fascinating.
Washing my hands at the Keg’s bathroom. Looking into the mirror. Suddenly thinking of the perfect karaoke song… Rescue Me by Bell Book and Candle! I kept singing it for days on repeat. My neighbour must hate me (nothing new here) especially since my voice is too low for the chorus.
It isn’t hard to see how such attachment patterns can undermine mental health. Both anxious and avoidant coping have been linked to a heightened risk of anxiety, depression, loneliness, eating and conduct disorders, alcohol dependence, substance abuse and hostility. The way to treat these problems, say attachment theorists, is in and through a new relationship. On this view, the good therapist becomes a temporary attachment figure, assuming the functions of a nurturing mother, repairing lost trust, restoring security, and instilling two of the key skills engendered by a normal childhood: the regulation of emotions and a healthy intimacy. // An interesting article on attachment styles and why theraphy works; it makes me want to learn more about attachment theory. This School of Life video is a nice addition as well.
That dream. About a book shop modeled after my picture of Penumbra’s 24-hour bookstore. There was an old man in a very narrow but high-ceilinged room full of books. There was no light source except for moonlight or some street lights. There were loads of stairs, very steep, leading to the back of the house. Upstairs the man would set out cat food and on the rooftop there was an old sailing boat. One day the man decided to open the door to the roof and let visitors see the ship, much like a museum; perhaps to attract customers. However, in the next night a cat-shaped ghost appeared who reminded me quite a lot of Kot Behemoth character in Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. The ghost was not amused about the old man’s decision and took away his key, a big golden one adorned with a red ribbon.
Toasted sesame makes pretty much every dish so much better.
Watching High Fidelity with gorgeous Zoe Kravitz (I adore her effortless style and her outfits), getting in the mood for making a playlist and listening to more music in general. There are all these great songs out there I forgot about.
Remembering the xkcd storm chaser comics.
Making a wicked good batch of Pho for Tom.
Spending a nice evening with Alex at Shamrock. Singing along to American Boy by Estelle. Confirming the hypothesis that the nerdy, quiet ones usually have a freak streak. That moment in the morning. Eye contact and kegel exercises.
Karaoke with Margit and Betty. Meeting Manu’s doppelganger. Same type, looks, voice. Eerie.
Making a BA Gourmet Makes meme for Steffen after he had passed his law examps. Strangely Gaby kinda looked like him after I was done with it.
Saturday morning in bed. Reading comics and graphic novels. Fresh bedclothes, surrounded by books. Since it was February 29 I thought about leap years and asked a few friends what their inner seven-year-old would have done that day (based on the thought experiment that your birthday was on February 29 and you’d age in 4-year-steps which would divide your age by 4 obviously).
I came up with: visiting grandma / eating Cini-Minis / falling asleep with my face buried in a cat / beating my neighbour Anna at Memory / drawing while listening to a Bibi Blocksberg cassette.
Alex said he’d have been outside all day, building a snow igloo. Not noticing his mum telling him to come to dinner. If the weather had been bad he would have played with his dinosaur collection. His inner 7-year-old was a hopeless dreamer who got agitated whenever his parents had a fight. Who came home late from school every day because he forgot about time when he was talking to his friend next to a hedge with thorns that looked like tiny airplanes.
Lena said she would have been outside all day long, playing in the mud with the neighbours’ kids. Of course.

Tagged! Get to know me! ✨
Tagged by: @witchy-morue
I'm excited to be included! Thank you! 💕
Rules: Answer these questions, then tag 20 blogs you’d like to know better!
Nicknames: My partner and one of our friends have taken to calling me Pollyanna. My partner coined the nickname for me when we were first starting to spend time together and it caught on a little among our circle. He made it a bit sarcastically as I have a bitter, dark sarcasm to me, but he liked that I retain a lot of optimism all the same. It's my favorite nickname.
Zodiac: Gemini
Height: 5’6"
Time: 9PM
Favorite band/artist: I'm not one for favorites since I love all sorts of music in most every genre, but I trend towards musicals, orchestral, pop/rock, and dance music.
Song stuck in my head: Sidekick by WALK THE MOON
Last movie I saw: Errementari on Netflix. It looked a bit cheesy from the preview but was honestly great. A Basque folklore inspired tale that was fantastical without taking itself too seriously.
Last thing I Googled: The Compendium of Constellations tarot deck.
Other blogs: I'm starting a witchy WordPress where I want to write about my practice more in depth since tumblr is often a bit tough to write long form on due to the setup and readability of the website. If you're interested in atheistic witchcraft as ritualistic metaphor or science witchery, go take a look! I'll probably be trending towards kitchen witchcraft and tarot talk more than other topics.
Do I get asks? Sometimes, but often on messenger, generally not public asks.
Why did I choose this username? The teaberry is an adorable flower and most of my usernames online have a sort of cute vibe to them, often using flowers or fruits in them.
Following: 65K+ now. I'm surprised at the sheer volume, quite honestly. I hope I can get to know some of you better!
Average amount of sleep: 7 hours in bed but I hardly sleep with my chronic illness issues. I don't know exactly how many hours I genuinely sleep per night but I'm pretty much always exhausted. 😪
What I'm wearing: Black pants, black shoes, royal blue short sleeve shirt (tucked in), thigh length black knit cardigan, and a gold chunky knit infinity scarf.
Dream job: I'm not sure. I think there are a lot of things I could be perfectly happy doing but I'm trying to figure out how to reasonably get a job that lets me do those things (writing, resource management, languages, etc). Things have been kind of rough since I had to stop sign language interpreting when I became disabled, and I'm still trying to find a path to the kind of work that would satisfy me again.
Dream trip: I'd love to visit the milky blue hot springs in Iceland. The scenery seems very beautiful there and I love the idea of visiting during the colder months to appreciate the hot spring waters.
Favorite food: Don't make a cook pick their favorite food… But some things I'm particularly craving right now are Korean fried chicken, iced matcha lattes, and mulligatawny.
Play any instruments? I played the trombone for over 12 years but had to stop when I realized how much it was hurting me due to chronic pain. It was my favorite hobby in school and I even traveled a bit with my college band, I miss it terribly.
Eye color: Medium brown.
Hair color: Medium brown.
Languages you speak: I’m a native English speaker, but I’m fluent in American Sign Language. I used to study Spanish very heavily in school, as well as a little Italian, but when I went to college, my focus was on ASL as an interpreting major, so I lost a lot of my Spanish speaking ability. (My college was heavy on Indian students, but had hardly any Hispanic students.) I can still read a fair amount though.
Most iconic song: Ever? The choice is too much, I fold.
Random fact: I love Teavana's Coconut Almond Amaretti tea blend and I am absolutely distraught that I can't buy it anywhere anymore after Starbucks bought them out. I'm desperately trying to figure out how to replicate it before I run out of the tea.
Describe yourself as aesthetic things: A binder with sheet protectors full of colored tabs, organized by subject, typed and formatted. A glass teapot, dark herbal tea swirling around shriveled tea leaves that swell in the boiling water. A drawer stuffed with knit scarves and sweaters in jewel tones. A living room couch with warm, fleece blankets hanging over the back, plush animals nestled among the throw pillows.

Hey if you still want to write something with that “I love you” thing, number 5 (during an impromptu dance party) would be adorable with Race in my opinion! Also P.S.: I love your blog like a lot❤️
5. Blurt it out in the middle of an impromptu dance party in the kitchen, as clumsy as your two left feet. When time seems to freeze, hastily tack on “in that shirt” or “when you make your award winning meatballs” or, if you are feeling particularly brave, “when we do this.” Resume your dancing and pretend you don’t feel her eyes on you for the rest of the night.
Thank you so much for the request! I was so stoked to write this. You have great taste in prompts, my dude. P.S.: I love your blog too!
It wasn’t that Race had a lot of relationship rules for the two of you. Why make rules when everything was already wonderful? There did not need to be a set date night, since neither of you could get enough of the other. No rules about who you could or could not talk to, or how much touching was allowed in public. It was a relationship that was largely led by what felt right, and Race felt awfully right when you were around.
There was one set of rules, though, that was set in stone. There was a certain list of songs, subject to additions but no subtractions, that the two of you were required to dance to. It did not matter where you were, what you were doing, or who you were with. The first few notes would play, his eyes would fly to yours, and you would drop everything to dance to it. “Come on Eileen” comes on in the grocery store? Ditch the cart and get to an area open enough to fit your fully choreographed dance routine. “Walking on Sunshine” starts playing at a family reunion? Hopefully you weren’t talking to anybody important, because that conversation is coming to a swift end.
The rules were not linked to the fact that the two of you were dating. They had come long before, back when having a crush made everything feel important and competitive. At first, they only mattered at parties. If “your song” came on, wasn’t it a moral obligation to dance together?
Eventually, you didn’t have one song with Race. It was a half dozen, maybe more. Then it wasn’t just at parties, when the lights were low and everybody was too drunk to question it. It was anywhere, as long as it meant that Race got to watch you smile and see the way you focused on moving just the way you wanted to. When he started dating you, it just solidified them.
Race loved dancing with you. Really, he supposed, he loved you. He loved you in every way he could think of; every way he thought you would allow, but it was only when he danced with you that he had trouble keeping himself from saying it.
Was three months of dating enough time? He knew he felt it, but did you? Would you say it back, or panic, or think he was joking? Not worth the risk.
There had been a day, a few weeks before finals when you guys had just started college, when he had been horrified by the telltale beginning of “Gasolina.” You had just had your first fight. It wasn’t really anybody’s fault - just some miscommunication or another, with both of you too proud to admit that it was stupid so you could move on. The fight should have ended so fast, so early, but you were both too proud to back down. As a result, you were tense and uncertain together, too quiet and too sharp.
The song began out on the quad, on one of those perfect days. Race had heard you call it an “Indian Summer” day. It seemed like the entire university had congregated outside, hoping to make the most of one of the last warm days before a seemingly eternal winter. Race’s eyes shot to yours, instinct winning out over pride.
You had looked back, and after a second of uncertainty, Race moved away from the rest of the guys. You mirrored him, finding a strip of empty grass, before the regular dancing could begin.
Race wanted to make you laugh. He wanted to be over the top, or ridiculously bad, or anything that would break that uncertain stoniness on your face.
Slowly, too slowly, you warmed up. The first time he tried the Sprinkler, you hardly looked at him. By the time he was resorting to the Lawnmower or the Shopping Cart, you had loosened up enough to give a snort of laughter. When he reached to twirl you, he made sure to spin you straight into his arms.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled into your ear.
You stepped back and offered him a careless grin. “Sorry for what?” When you kept dancing, the relief that swept over him was overwhelming. Truly, his legs went a little wobbly, a little weak, at the thought that you would join him in the caf for breakfast the next morning, like always.
“I love you,” he blurted. The relief shifted to horror when you faltered, looking at him again. Before you had a chance to respond, he grabbed your hips and drew you close to him. “-r sweet moves. I love them. Super classy, babe.”
You laughed, squirming a little. “They’re classier when you aren’t trying to grind on me.”
You never mentioned the exchange afterwards, so Race figured he was in the clear. No worries. He loved you, but you didn’t know it yet. Good.
The Cupid Shuffle, while not on the unofficial list of dances that the two of you had to do, was definitely a tune that Race always got down for. It was, like, illegal not to dance to it. So, at Jack and Katherine’s wedding, Race ended up next to you for the song.
During the portion of the song where you were directly behind him, you leaned over to whisper into his ear. “I dare you to do the rest of the song like the Cha Cha Slide.”
“Absolutely not,” Race said, horror and delight intermingling “No, no, no.”
“I dare you,” you crooned, bopping your way 90 degrees away from him. “Are you a chicken?”
He groaned, his amusement slowly winning out over the clear and present danger. “I’m no chicken, doll.” He stopped dancing, ignoring the surprised looks from the people around him, and started clapping.
You were cackling while you danced. You almost doubled over when his dancing would interfere with somebody else’s, and Race thought for a while that you might genuinely be in danger of wetting yourself. He would have cared more if he hadn’t been trying to ignore the heat in his cheeks. Jack would never let him live this down.
When the Cupid Shuffle ended, you grabbed him hand and dragged him away. Mirth danced in your eyes, or maybe that was just the happy tears. “You have cha-cha-d your way right into my good graces,” you said. Giggles still mixed with your words, and he thought that your cheeks must ache with the size of your smile.
He leaned in and pressed a swift kiss against your lips. Another. Another. “I love you,” he said.
You tried to stifle your laughter, but it had turned into a vicious cycle. Each spurt of laughter powered the next one, and you couldn’t stop. You opened your mouth to speak, maybe to say it back, but Race chickened out. Again.
“-when you do evil things,” he finished lamely. “You’re diabolical, honey.” He kissed you again, effectively swallowing anything you might have wanted to say to him, and he mentally kicked himself. He may have been ballsy enough to do the wrong dance, but he really was too much of a chicken to follow through. Soon enough, thankfully, he was too swept up by your lips and your smell and your hands to worry about what he should have done.
The Shrek soundtrack was the God of music. The Forrest Gump of movies. The pizza of food. It was indisputably prime, so when “Accidentally in Love” came on while you were cooking in your apartment, Race was swift to sweep you up into his arms.
“This song isn’t a slow dance,” you said, but you settled into him easily enough. You wound your arms around his neck and settled your face against his shoulder.
“Every song is a slow dance, if you try hard enough.” Race held you close against him, not caring about food that could burn or any mess you could be getting onto him.
“Even ‘Gasolina?’”
“Any song,” he repeated. “You just have to try harder.”
You hummed a little, half in response to him and half to go along with the song.
Race took a deep breath, heart settling in his chest. It was steady, if a little heavy. You were still humming a little, the vibrations rumbling through him too. “I love you,” he said softly. There was a split second where he thought about correcting himself, but it wasn’t anything serious. Last second nerves, but not second thoughts. “I love you when we do this.”
He felt you smile against him, but he quickly swept you away into a different conversation. Race desperately wanted to hear you say it back, but he didn’t want to spoil the evening if you didn’t. This was perfect. This was what he wanted. So he talked about the awful haircut Albert got, how wonderful the new Panic! at the Disco song was, and about how it should be illegal to put coconut in chocolate. In anything, really.
You did not tell Race that you loved him too, not then. The moment had passed. But he felt your eyes on him, warm and hopeful, and he knew that another moment would come soon enough. They always did.
