This may or may not have asked more than once but I wanted to ask— what is your favorite alternate universe or stories of jttw in Tumblr? I've seen the glorious works of Kaijufluffs and kiri with her monkey business (may be some lmk here and there), but so far that's the only things in my list. There was also that one jttw artist and their au but like, it was from the 2015 movie (I think) and somehow integrated w the west pantheon too (their name might've been sun or something)

So to begin, are you talking about the aus made by @sunny-days-and-warm-mournings? Because I know that they've come up with a number of AUs, and that from what I've seen they're all bangers with all sorts of interesting takes and flavors, from making everyone's favorite monkey more a god of food to a terrifying death deity! As you can imagine this has led to many a stellar design from the whimsical to the horrific for all of these monkey kings, each of which is fully worth checking out. tbh I feel like you should just scroll through their gallery to find them all & will promise that you won't be disappointed.

If you're looking for something a little more lego show flavored, then you should check out @digitaldoeslmk's "by the book au!" Its Monkey King is extremely fun sized, and it's really neat for the way it explores heartfelt sides to MK and friend's stories in a Monkie Kid scenario where JTTW happened according to Wu Cheng'en's story and where reality isn't constantly in danger so we see fun stuff like lion dancing and putting on plays and the warm interactions that come with it (& also where everyone isn't routinely yelling about how awful & incompetent SWK is fsgreafw).

I also have to give a shout-out to @violetvirus for their JTTW cyberpunk au! It's got a very fun and bouncy cartoon vibe to it, and I love how SWK, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing look as robots <3. There's hints of some interesting ways the JTTW scenario works with a cyberpunk setting, as well as some moments of silliness like this banger:

Last but certainly not least, and while its been awhile since he posted, I would definitely recommend checking out @antidotefortheawkward and @antidotefortheawkward-art's blogs for his JTTW AUs! Seriously, his blogs are cornucopias of wonderful JTTW aus, from an actors AU to a triad AU to a Lotus Lantern AU to a post-JTTW JTTW au! Each of these really shows a lot of attention and care for the characters and the details of the world they inhabit from clothing to religion to history, which as you can imagine opens up multiple opportunities for some really lovely, heartfelt, and overall great interactions. A few personal favorites include this comic of an conversation between Sun Wukong and Liu Chenxiang of Lotus Lantern fame:

"In time, you will understand what I mean," the former Crown Prince of Xianle said. "As an immortal, we have all the time to learn from our mistakes, make amends for it and come to terms with everything."

Wei Ying stared at the ground for a long while, before he spoke again. "You said I'm a god. What kind of god am I? God of the Dark? God of Death?"

"Close. But not quite. You are now Fuxing Zushi ," said the heavenly being. "The Venerable Patriarch of Renewal."

"The God of Destruction and Rebirth."

Wei Ying died with the destruction of the Stygian Tiger Seal. Of Destruction and Rebirth begins with him waking in a dark realm of starlight with water surrounding a wooden pier. After an interesting, but brief, conversation with "a simple god", he is told that he has ascended to become one of the gods, Fuxing Zushi - the Venerable Patriarch of Renewal.

Chapters will move back and forward in time from that point, as we learn of Wei Ying's fate in the afterlife, his duties as a god, what happens to those he left behind, and the resolution to many mysteries.

He has to spend a lot of time working on paperwork -- lots of paperwork. Much of it generated by deaths in that "certain war" to which he contributed. He gains an assistant, and then two more.

Wei Ying learns about prayers, and how to meet petitioners in Dreams. He gains believers first in Yiling, who have pretty much started worshiping the Yiling Laozu as the god of Renewal thanks to the prayers he has answered. After trashing the rudimentary site in Yiling in a pique of, well, Jiang Cheng's temper, Jiang Cheng sends builders to do things properly. And the first Temple of the Moon and Stars is built.

As the story threads through post-Burial Grounds territories in the novel, we find Nie Huaisang's plea to his friend for revenge, the establishment of more temples, the fates of Mo Xuanyu and Wen Yuan, the fate of the Burial Mounds itself and, perhaps through what one could consider a prime example of the modern game called Telephone, the start of temples worshipping Fuxing Mushi - the Venerable Matriarch of Renewal.

Lan Zhan remains in seclusion for several years. Xue Yang gets up to no good in Koi Tower. And Jin Guangshang goes with his wife to a Temple of the Moon and Stars in Langya and observes a beautiful portait of the goddess, to ill effect.

Things follow as one expects. A Discussion Conference. Complaints about Jin Guangshan from people who have been wronged. An ill-conceived siege on the Burial Mounds. And a meeting at the temple on those grounds with Fuxing Zushi, Wei Wuxian.

There is also a wedding at the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale and got a kick out of the extra scenes (and one deleted scene). There is a (very subtle) little bit of Heaven Official's Blessing added into the mix.

Fic Recs: Hunter X Hunter

i’m pretty sure this was the first anime i ever watched, so it holds a very special place in my heart. here are some of my favourite fics from this fandom!

The wealthiest families in Yorbia are given a the opportunity of a lifetime when their daughters qualify to compete for the prince’s hand in marriage. Only one contestant isn’t excited to participate. Killua, a mercenary forced to take his sister’s place, just wants to be eliminated so he can stop cross-dressing and return to work. But things take a turn for the worse when he finds himself succeeding despite his best efforts to fail—and as the competition continues, he begins to suspect the prince may have a couple of screws loose. Because if Killua’s pass rate is any indication...the man has some very strange requirements for a future wife.

this might possibly be one of my favourite fics ever. i have read and reread it countless times and i never get bored of it. the humour, the descriptions, the characters, all of it is just so good! if you only read one fic off this list, this should be the one

"Killua's hands fidgeted almost unnoticeably, but it was his eyes that gave him away. They flitted from place to place as if looking for something. Looking for a threat, perhaps. Five times in which Mito asks Killua for permission (because she knows how to deal with traumatized kids) and one time Killua asks her.

mito my beloved. this fic is entirely from her perspective, which is really refreshing as she isn’t a character whose pov is written of often. plus, the mito & killua and mito & alluka interactions are so sweet!

Killua added, "And I took care of Illumi years ago. He'd have to be crazy to attack us now." “Then who's after you?” Zushi finally cried out, throwing his hands into the air. Killua rolled his eyes. “It’s Gon, obviously!”

wing my beloved. yet again another character whose pov is criminally under-utilised within the fandom, and it sets this fic apart! i love the plot concerning him and killua’s reunion, and zushi exasperation really adds to the humour!

the tone of this fic is perfect and the characterisation is spot on. the dynamic between the two is captured really well and i love the humour that’s been used

It's Killua Zoldyck's 18th birthday: the day he will take over from his father, the current Lord Zoldyck, to rule their family and their fiefdom. However, his brother, Illumi, a powerful magician, challenges him for his inheritance. When Killua refuses to give it up, Illumi curses him to live for hundreds of years with no human companionship, while dying slowly and painfully of a disfiguring disease. True love's kiss will break the curse, but Killua doesn't hold out much hope that anyone will even find him, let alone fall in love with him, before the disease consumes him. Of course, he has yet to meet Gon Freecss.

this fic has been adapted into a published novel, and i think that speaks volumes about how great it is. it has this haunting yet beautiful vibe about it that i love, and it sticks closely to the plot of beauty and the beast to give a great retelling!

Leorio doesn't get paid enough for this shit, really. or: Killua and Gon have a nasty habit of finding trouble, and Leorio's apartment is the one place they fall back to when they're forced to carry their dying best friend.

the most extreme hurt/comfort. really this fic has very heavy angst but an equal amount of fluff for the best of both worlds. plus leorio is a godsend for those two

In the Sharp and Dying Days by anodymalion

"If you can’t defeat Shoot, you must stay out of Gon’s life." This is what Bisky told him, the thing that haunts Killua still, that echoes in his ears when he lies paralyzed in the dirt at Shoot's feet, when the tentative future he’d hoped for himself falls to pieces around him. Killua will protect Gon for the thirty days Gon can’t use Nen. And then Killua will leave him forever. It’s fitting, then, that that’s how long Killua Zoldyck has left to live.

the most heart-wrenching hanahaki disease fic i’ve read. it does focus around killugon, but i love how it also draws on the other friendships killua has made and how other people care for and want to be around him

ever since that fateful day, the one the stars foretold, you have been by my side.

"how old are you, f/n?" "i don't remember."

the smaller male with indigo hair turned his head, almost if a '?' had just appeared over his head. "kuni-kun, how old are you?" kunikuzushi, the one reffered to as "kuni-kun", opened his mouth to tell f/n his age. strangely, nothing came out. f/n let out a small chuckle. "you don't know either, right?" he looked onto the horizon, almost making his speech have a dramatic effect. "somehow, we are alike. you're not a normal human at all, are you?" kunikuzushi didn't know the answer to that.

"fontaine really is beautiful, isn't it?" f/n said with a calm smile. a smile that even if five hundred years passed once more, would be never changing. both boys, still young in appearance, were walking around a small district in the nation of fontaine. there was bustling all around, and since it was so crowded, f/n told kunikuzushi, or now better known as scaramouche, to take his hat off as to not disturb people walking past them.

scaramouche almost felt weirdly uncomfortable without the hat, though deep down he knew f/n was right. as if he was ever going to admit that. a hand only slightly bigger than scaramouches own touched his nearly every step he took, making him desire touching it back, taking the hand and holding it dearly.

before scaramouche could act on it, the hand had already enveloped his. he whipped his head around to look at his companion, and f/n gave him a closed-eye smile. "i know you, 'zushi. i've been alive long enough to know when a person needs something to comfort them."

most people disliked scaramouche. whether it was for his foul language, his snarky and mean remarks or his arrogant behaviour, people always found reasons to hate him. he wanted to say he didnt blame them - he did, but what was to be expected? - his attitude was worse than some of the other harbingers.

f/n was the only person that treated scaramouche as a friend, as a person, as someone who is worth to be cared about. in fact, f/n was most likely the only person who actually knew scaramouche - who knew kunikuzushi. he planned on keeping it like that.

just him and f/n. he wouldn't care if there weren't any humans left in teyvat, as long as f/n was with him. scaramouche knew just as well as f/n did that those humans didn't matter anyway. they'd outlive them no matter what. "why are you so nice to me?" scaramouche's voice was soft as he spoke.

"you've asked that so many times, dear. you already know the answer. it seems you just lost it in your mind." the smaller boy huffed, "you always say that." "because my answer will never change."

f/n looked at scaramouche in a way that he would describe as lovingly. "i'll love you for all eternity, if thats how long it will take you to figure it out."

"i want to love you even longer than that."

Jiang Cheng and Lan XiChen have been together for an year. In which, no one ever really gets over things, Jiang Cheng has the misfortune of interacting with his brother, the juniors help out with the proposal, and there's a marriage.

Modao Zushi Online is a virtual reality MMORPG. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are top ranking players in its new server, currently tied with their arch-nemesis from their previous server, Wen Chao. In an attempt to defeat him, they take on the Gusu Dungeon Boss, Zewu-jun, to win the reward of a legendary weapon. Ever the cheat, Wei Wuxian tries to take advantage of a glitch to defeat the seemingly undefeatable boss. It backfires. Jiang Cheng gets fucked by a boss monster.

Meanwhile, Lan Xichen, the unwitting staff member in charge of controlling Zewu-jun, absolutely did not sign up to be pulled into a secret virtual reality fling with a player. Mod Ji, who has to deal with Wei Wuxian's incessant glitch reporting of his brother's sex life, is long-suffering.

Jiang Cheng's life is a mess, he's a mess, and he doesn't miss his brother at all. So when his sister gifts him ten sessions with a massage therapist, who turns out to be someone he was crushing on for a hot minute as a teenager and is still as hot as ever... yeah, that might as well happen. It won't have to mean anything.

This feels intimate to Jiang Cheng in a way that's probably very inappropriate and maybe even pathetic. Nobody touches him like this, right where he’s hurt the most. There's no one who handles him so gently, so carefully.

It's the gentleness that's his undoing, he thinks. He would be able to deal better with it if it was painful.

Mostly those daydreams have been simple enough — they break up (probably because Lan Zhan is boring or Wei Ying is annoying), Wei Ying is sad for a couple of days (Jiang Cheng’s willing to allow some space for feelings, he isn't a total monster), but then Wei Ying realizes he’s better off, he gets over it, and Jiang Cheng gets his brother back.

Unfortunately the fantasy version of events has only proven partially true, so far. They've broken up. Wei Ying has been sad.

Now weeks have passed, though — and Wei Ying is still sad, every. Single. Day.

When Gon first meets Killua, he’s wasted out of his mind in the middle of some bar party Zushi dragged him to after loosing the match. He doesn’t even know Killua’s name when he challenges him to a fight--all he knows is the white haired kid is wearing the opposing team’s colors and then the next second Gon is on the ground.

The bar roars in approval as Gon’s head spins. Stars dance across his vision and the back of his head throbs. He hadn’t even seen the stranger move.

He scrambles to get up but is pushed roughly back onto the sticky wooden floor. Gon wheezes as the stranger straddles his waist, firmly and easily pinning his wrists to the floor on either side of his head. Gon tries struggling with a curse but it’s no use. This man is strong enough to match Gon, and that’s really kind of impressive now that he’s realizing it.

"Give up,” the stranger says in a flat tone. “You’re drunk and I don’t want to cause any trouble here. My friend owns this place so if you have a problem with me, I suggest we take this somewhere else.”

Gon blinks. He takes in curved blue eyes, a narrow nose, the sharp curve of the stranger’s jaw. In that moment, all his pent up frustration eases out of him. “Y-You...”

The stranger lifts a silver eyebrow. “I, what?”

“You’re beautiful,” Gon whispers and the man recoils as if burned.

“What? You--You just threatened to punch me in the face just because of my school colors and now you’re calling me beautiful?”

Gon frowns. “Yeah. Is there a problem with that?”

The stranger scowls, releasing his grip on Gon’s wrists. “You’re drunk. Really, really drunk. And crazy. I don’t have time to deal with people like you.”

He gets off of Gon and Gon sucks in a deep breath. He struggles to sit up as the stranger stalks off through the crowd. Gon’s stomach drops. The room might be spinning and, yes, he is most definitely drunk, but he does know one thing.

He doesn’t want to loose sight of the beautiful stranger.

So he scrambles to stand and chases after him.

Summary: Gon and Killua go trick or treating after hearing about the tradition from Zushi. Gon doesn't like the way other people are looking at Killua, so he does the only thing he can do when he and Killua aren't a thing-- scent mark him.

I try to! ... But I’m very bad at it. Sometimes I reply almost straight away, sometimes it takes me months and months before I manage. I do very much appreciate each and every comment that comes my way!

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Probably Zero Hour (YGO 5Ds), which was my shot at a soulmate fic where canon events and motivations were more important to the characters than any soulmate status.

Do you write crossovers? If so, what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I have an entire series where I throw Judai into unrelated fandoms just to see what explodes :D I highly recommend doing so, it’s great fun!

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not outright hate, though someone once got terribly offended at *checks notes* portraying Jiang Cheng as a multifaceted character who has extremely complex feelings with regards to Wei Wuxian?

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Nah, I’m the kind of ace who is no good at it. I tried once, but it made me feel extremely awkward in a way I couldn’t work through.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not outright stolen, but someone once took large swathes of a fic of mine and just changed the names and relevant details. They did credit me as an inspiration, buuuut it was a little more than just inspiration.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Once! I’d be delighted if people wanted to translate other fics of mine!

What’s your all time favorite ship?

I usually have favorite ships per fandom, though the ones that have been with me the longest are Yubel/Judai/Johan (GX) and Yusei/Bruno (5Ds).

Whats a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I once started writing a fic about Aki coming to terms with her powers and how they evolved post-canon, mostly because I was in a rut at the time and needed to write something. I still hope to come back to it one day, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely.

What are your writing strengths?

Emotions and stream-of-consciousness, particularly when a character is panicking or otherwise not thinking clearly. I love writing those scenes.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Description. I am horrifically bad at describing things or people and I have aphantasia, so elaborate descriptions à la Tolkien are entirely wasted on me (give me a five-paragraph description of a lush forest with all the various creatures living there and my takeaway will be ‘there are trees’.)

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I like doing so, but it’s a delicate balance and if you’re gonna do it, make sure the language is correct and it makes sense for the character. Only do it if the other characters in the vicinity really aren’t able to understand what’s being said.

What’s being said also needs to make sense in context, even if the full translation isn’t given.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Harry Potter, a fic about the Hogwarts Founders. I was 13 and it never saw the light of the internet :D

What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

I am still very fond of So Far, So Good! When it comes to more recent fic, I had a lot of fun writing Nowhere Near (Nachtwacht), Your own heart that matters (Botw) and Stranger to your soul (mdzs)!

094. Name three things most would not expect your character to be able to know.

(Basing my response with this fact in mind.)

Valerian is adept at mathematics, mostly for the purposes of sailing and navigation, he hasn’t had much use for mathematics beyond that aside from basic addition and subtraction. He’d certainly be the last person you’d want to do your taxes.

Valerian can make a mean Saba Zushi, he was first introduced to the dish when he was a sailor, it was a favorite of the crew as it could be made fairly easily and packed away with ease. He’s carried that recipe with him and wouldn't be opposed to trying to make it again himself.

Finally, Valerian knows that the fate of the star hangs upon a thin wire that can snap at any moment. He perfectly understands that the balance of the cosmic forces is a very tenuous one and it is something that can be easily tipped in the wrong way given enough time and pressure. He’s only confided this information with C’elah, knowing she would at least be able to understand -some- of what he had seen.

Killua thought it was weird that his lecture hall buddy, Gon, “didn’t have social media”. He didn’t look into it—at least, not at first. Ballet took off the nervous edge from not being as active as he used to, but it didn’t quite replace the feeling or tension he felt during a good sparring. He misses the feeling of his heart at his throat, pounding, as he swings fist and foot, technique after technique, to knock his opponent out.

So he doesn’t protest when Bisky takes him to the industrial zone in YorkNew City, to some underground ring she supposedly sponsors. He watches as his world tilts on his axis, and he gets thrown into a world he didn’t know existed.

He watches as Gon Freecss comes stumbling into his life, and turns it completely upside with one swift punch to the gut.

He took a few steps closer to his sister to put some distance between them before answering. "He's more my sis's fave than mine, but yeah I think he's cool," Killua answered, internally patting himself on the back for his modesty. He was probably the best newcomer in the country if his stats were anything to go by, but still...

Killua’s shoulder prickles as the presence there seems to shift. He breathes out.

“Gon is exactly who I think he is. And he’s disappeared at the same time as-” Killua’s eyes dart from Illumi to the window, and he nearly glances to his desk, where the gold box rests. “At the same time as I released a jinni. I think you’re drawing the wrong conclusions.”

“Never trust the occult,” Illumi tells him. Killua knows he's right; his sister’s headstone is reminder enough.

But Killua has grown up with a sixth sense – the unusual ability to feel magic around him, traces of it on magic users, or the concentrated crackle of spirits made up of magic itself. And so Killua knows that the boy he met at boarding school is a far cry from the jinni that wears Gon’s face. But Gon is missing, and it’s Killua’s fault – he’s the one, after all, who released the jinni in the first place.
