Thanks so much for tagging me, @bbcphile, how fun! I ended up rereading some of my older fics for this. Onward!

In no particular order, let's start with Not Too Sentimental, which I wrote for Yuletide in 2014 (which is not, I regret to say, ten years ago! Je refuse!). I based this on the wonderful novel The Girls at the Kingfisher Club by Genevieve Valentine, which is a Jazz age retelling of the 12 dancing princesses. It's gen and about the two oldest sisters, Jo and Lou, who have a love-hate relationship.

Next is the first DMBJ fic I wrote, Reach for their Scabbards, which is Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling/Liu Sang for my beloved @uschickens, who in the best tradition of fandom friends dragged me down into the pits with her. Wu Xie and Xiaoge take care of Liu Sang and then decide to keep him. There's a whole series.

Whatever Our Reckoning is also in DMBJ, a short little fic I wrote because we needed more Hei Xiazi/Xiao Hua/Huo Xiuxiu fic (we always need more but we needed it for a specific reason) and it's a twisty little thing. I like that there's nothing explained and everything explained in under 3k words. I have a sequel started, but I don't know that I will ever finish it.

I wrote With Water and a Star for an exchange and until recently it was the longest fic I wrote without coauthors. I got the assignment and I said to @uschickens, well, @merinnan really loves fake dating but how can you do fake dating with three people? And it turns out this is how. Another HeiHuaHuo fic, and what I loved is that I managed to pull it off, three points of view, a satisfying story, a happy ending. It even has a little post-story sex-tra.

(I feel like I'm pushing it with the extra links but also, this is a self-rec post and I do what I want).

The last one... ok, I'm going to take "5 favorite fics you've written" to mean finished fics. I love my wips, but in terms of finished fic, I'm going to go with No Rug to Sleep On or Fish to Eat. KinnPorsche fandom, Kim/Chay (why did I fall for the most adorable little pairing? because of all the delicious trauma? because they don't end up together at the end? how about both.gif). Kim gets turned into a kitten and events ensue. The tag "Kitten Thinks About Nothing But Murder All Day" is absolutely correct.

That is lovely to hear, anon, and I'm so glad you've enjoyed them! I wish I had a very Useful and Definite answer for you, but the absolute truth is - I don't know! I do still very much enjoy pingxiesang and would be happy to write it again, but my writer brain is a bag of squirrels and predicting what it will latch on to or be capable of writing is very difficult. At the moment I'm trying to focus on finishing up some WIPS (both partial ones on AO3 and some that are still in drafts) so whatever is in there might get some attention, at least!

7. Non-con/Taboo ship

See, this one is really hard. I'm not exactly sure what classifies as a non-con or taboo ship. If I say Wu Erbai and Er Jing (TLTR)? Lord, that is a wild idea that I saw only a couple times, but I feel like if anyone, they classify as a taboo ship. But idk, to be honest.

9. Wish-was-endgame ship

Oh man, I have so many! But lemme just pick one. Hmm… let's go with Pingxiesang? Because like, I really liked their interactions and I just- I really love them. And we didn't even see Liu Sang at the end of Reunion!! And I was like what?? Seriously? Even though he really warmed up to the Iron Triangle and was literally accepted into their group. And we never even learned what happened to him after the story was over and I was just really annoyed by that. So yeah, I really wish Pingxiesang, even if just as a platonic ship, appeared at the end and showed that they care about each other.

Sounds of spoken words echo around Wu Xie; a rough touch makes him gasp without air. There’s the taste of blood in his mouth, and all of this is so fucking, terrifyingly familiar that the urge to scream only grows. He doesn’t want to be back here, he refuses.

I really loved everyone's reactions to the stabbing. Especially Wu Xie and Xiaoge. The way they were all reminded of when Wu Xie was dying of lungs and dealing with it (or not dealing with it) in different ways. It gave me a lot of feelings.

Liu Sang/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling (DMBJ)

I have been in a writing slump recently. Well, more like constant lack of energy that means that I have no energy to do anything after work.

I do have thoughts on dmbj, I even have some I posted wipes, but honestly? Not sure I when I will write in that fandom again, or any.

I am trying to get myself to start writing small snippets as a come back exercise, we will see how it goes!

Do you have any other ships in dmbj? I know you mostly from your HeiHua, but do you enjoy other ships as well?

I do! I just don't write them and I'm not sure why. I think there's not a story I've felt I both have the energy to write AND that I've compelled to tell about them yet. I am a big fan of ot3 iron triangle, pingxie, some pingxiesang, and I actually find hei xiazi/chuchu interesting. Su Wan/Yang Hao AND Huo Daofu/Yang Hao are ones I really want to write in future though.

I also love reading other people's takes on the Hei Xiazi/Wu Xie/Xiao Hua dynamic where they are all sleeping together in various iterations, I just haven't written it. I suspect part of it is it wouldn't wash in the extended metaphors universe, but I do have canon setting fic I don't consider part of that. I think it's moreso that I don't want to write SH-era dmbj at this point. I can go into why, but that's a whole other thing.

As a rule, I like Liu Sang and I have a lot of thoughts on him, but I'm not sure they're conducive to a ship fic for him. I'm far more fascinated by how much he acts his age in regards to cruelty, for example; I actually put most of my thoughts about him into that AU where Hei Xiazi and Wu Xie are camp counsellors in 90s America. Which. Huh. I guess it just worked out that the AU setting provided the best framework?

Same for Xiao-ge. I have very clear opinions on Xiao-ge and how I'd want to write him.

🕯️was there a fic that was really hard on you to write, or took you to a place you didn’t think it would take you?

Live Like a Knife Blade was really, really hard to get through. I had such a hard time writing the 3rd chapter, where Liu Sang has to explain things to his very well-meaning and completely-not-getting-it lovers, and I wanted to make that as real and raw as possible without them breaking up (and at points this seemed like a real possibility). All this hard work to get Liu Sang railed!

💥find your least kudos’d fic - say something wonderful about it.

My least kudos’d fic is my first, which I published on LiveJournal sometime in the extremely early 2000s. Blue drink is *NSYNC, Chris/Justin. I remember it fondly, I think I wrote it for a friend’s birthday (or Justin’s birthday?). I love the fact that I wrote it in second person. A bold choice from a complete newbie who really didn’t know any better.

🎙️which one of your fics would you like someone to make a pod-fic of?

It’s funny, since I don’t really listen to podfic, this is pretty difficult for me. But I think I’d love someone to record No rug to sleep on and no fish to eat which is a KinnPorsche fic where Kim turns into a cat. It’s got a lot of different POVs and kitten!Kim keeps purring, and I’d love to see how someone plays with that with their voice.

Possible entry points for DMBJ fanworks

Wanting to try enjoying DMBJ fanworks, but don't know where to start - especially if you aren't very familiar with canon? Here are some popular ships/characters that have a fair number of works to give you a decent starting place to sink your teeth into. I strongly recommend branching out from these as you become more familiar with the characters and world, as one of the strengths of DMBJ fanworks is the popularity of rarepairs, polyships, gen, aro/ace relationships, and the wealth of interesting canon characters to explore.

Note that this guide is specific to works representation in the English-language fandom, and that other ships/characters are more or less popular in the Chinese-language fandom.

I enjoy angsty ships where the characters will sacrifice everything and burn the world down to protect each other. You might enjoy fics featuring PingXie (Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling). Zhang Qiling is a silent, amnesiac, near-mythical immortal warrior with little connection with the world and a tragic, whumpy past. Wu Xie is an everyman clever-but-naive tomb-raiding-mob-family heir who gradually becomes hardened and ruthless to save those he loves. They are two of the main characters of the canon and this is the largest fanon ship.

I enjoy the above, but think it would be even better with the addition of a strong-but-ordinary person who acts as the rock for the others to anchor to: You might enjoy PingPangXie (Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling or Wang Pangzi & Wu Xie & Zhang Qiling). Wang Pangzi is the third main character of the canon, an older tomb raider with a boisterously violent but deeply caring nature. This threesome is popular as both a romantic and nonromantic combination.

I enjoy power couples, banter, and an underlying thread of existential tragedy in a ship that manages to have UST even while actively having sex: You might enjoy HeiHua (Hei Xiazi/Xie Yuchen). Xie Yuchen (also known as Xiao Hua) is a tomb-raiding mob boss whose ruthlessness and tightly controlled power hides abandonment issues and a deep need to protect those he loves. Hei Xiazi is an immortal mercenary whose raccoon-gremlin clowning covers the underlying tragedy of his existence. They are secondary characters who appear regularly throughout the various canon series.

Shipping is okay, but I really enjoy gen fics with lots of hurt/comfort and found family vibes: You might enjoy fics featuring Liu Sang, a bitchy whump magnet with super hearing and a tragic past. Despite being a fan favorite in English-language works, Liu Sang is a secondary character who only appears in one canon series and a couple of spinoff movies.

I am interested in the above, but would like additional romance: You might enjoy some of the many Liu Sang ships, of which the biggest is probably PingXieSang (Liu Sang/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling). If you like sunshine puppy + hissy bitch ships, you might enjoy KanSang (Kan Jian/Liu Sang). Kan Jian is a secondary character in a couple of adaptations, an expert marksman noted for his strength of bicep and himbo-ness of brain.

Again, there are many more amazing relationships represented in DMBJ fanworks, including other characters and/or other combinations of the above, and I strongly recommend branching out from here to other characters and ships as you learn more about the world, but if you are just putting your toe into the DMBJ ocean, these can be bigger islands to start out from!

They prayed that the child had somehow survived, but seven days without food or water for an adult would have been deadly, a child had no chances of survival at all. // They found Wu Xie deep in the tomb, sleeping on his little backpack. He was warm and healthy, confused at why the adults were yelling, looking like he’d just stepped into the tomb five minutes ago.

Which would explain why Wu Xie was instead fleeing for his life, carrying an injured fox, while a giant monster chased them both through the tomb.

And again. // Wu Xie just wanted to catch and socialise a feral cat into a pet. He hadn't planned on a fox deciding the trap he'd put out was a convenient and consistent source of food.

It blazes like a beacon, but feels like gunky slime in his senses. // Who ever it is, is very good at hiding, at knowing where everyone is at all times.

Being tactful isn't going to change anything. It won't make it better. // Maybe nothing could have changed the outcome. Maybe Wu Xie did everything right, but maybe that wasn't enough. Maybe failure was inevitable. // There were too many ways something could have gone wrong. // And clearly, something did.

He didn’t know much about magic, the scripters on the station preferred to keep an air of mysticism about what they could and couldn’t do, and the little magic he had been able to afford was apparently crap. He was pretty sure though that they didn’t explode things regularly.  //  Liu Sang really had no clue what he had signed up for.

When the Rain Provides PingXieSang DMBJ The tomb, a monster, a storm and a secluded cabin refuge. Wu Xie just wanted to take Liu Sang for a nice visit to simple a tomb. This was little more than he'd bargained for. The beginning of the saga - hopefully editing of pt 3 will begin soon. I really love the world-building in this.

The Carp That Got Away - Kenren/Tenpou Saiyuki Gaiden Kenren hijacks everyone for a day out of the Palace. A little fic for a little fandom but I was so pleased with the way this came out....

Okay, let's see. I'm going to try and pick some older ones too even though I've improved as a writer as I've gone along. Otherwise it's all going to be DMBJ fics.

Juxtaposition (DMBJ, Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling) Wu Xie doesn't think life can get much better than this. He gets to use his architecture degree to design buildings for a living and he gets to work with the love of his life who helps make his designs a reality. He's certainly not going to let something small like an attempted mugging disrupt his world. The mysterious man who saved him, on the other hand… This fic is still the one I am most proud of, for the sheer length and the fact that it's an AU which I don't normally write. It's not even close to being my most popular DMBJ fic but it's the one I love the most

And There's That Pesky Thing Called Reality (Supernatural RPF AU, Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles) Jared wishes he had the life of Sam and Dean Winchester but unfortunately they are fictional characters in a series of books. Instead he's stuck working at the library with only his imagination for company. When he breaks his leg in an accident his life goes from mundane to just plain boring, until he finds himself in posession of a computer. Pretty soon he's fully immersed in the crazy world of Supernatural fandom. It's just lucky for him he has resident BNF Jensen to hold his hand through it all. Now if they could just get over the fact that Jared thinks Jensen is a girl everything would be awesome. This fic has not dated well but if you want a time capsule of what online fandom was like in 2010 then this is it. I had a lot of fun writing this one.

Unexpected (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy/Spike) Set some time after Fool For Love. Buffy finds help in a surprising place. This is the first fic I ever published, so if you read it keep that in mind. It's definitely not good but it's important to me because it set me off on my fic journey. And, you know, props to teen!Hils for diving straight in and posting a 15k fic instead of starting with something short

Staring Into Open Flame (Check Please, Alexei Mashkov/Kent Parson) Never let it be said that Kent Parson ever does what he should. Once again my rarepair loving brain took over and gave me this little fic. I really enjoyed writing Kent. He's a very complex dude and it was fun to explore that a little.

Lost and Found (Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack Sparrow/James Norrington) Drowning didn’t feel as bad as he expected it to. His lungs burned for a moment or two and then he merely felt warm and sleepy, the way he had when his mother used to rock him to sleep. The world slowly faded around him until there was only darkness Peace at last. I'm quite proud of this one because I wrote it not long after the first PotC movie came out and having Norrington washed up and depressed pre-dated how he was in Dead Man's Chest by quite a bit. Yep, Disney stole my idea (kidding)
