HxHBB24 by Numbers

This year, so far we have shared over 300,000 words with the world! This includes both completed and ongoing works posted to AO3 and Tumblr at the time of this data pull.

Our longest completed work so far belongs to @chubsthehamster's story with 63,391 words! Keep an eye on ongoing works to see if another story swipes longest work for HxHBB24.

Which brings us to our current tally for completed or ongoing works, where stories that are still being shared weekly/daily take the cake!

58% of our participants preferred to share their stories over a longer period of time rather than post everything all in one go.

All of our works this year have been added to the collection on AO3! This year's batch makes up just over 12% of our all-time works since 2016, wow.

Taking a look at our pairing breakdown, Killugon just barely edged out over the General category for our largest chunk of stories! We had submissions for every category this year, covering the whole gambit of what HxHBB is all about.

Lastly, after all of these writing stats, we would also like to acknowledge the fact that there were 59 pieces of art created as companions to each of these stories!

All of our participants put so much hard work and effort into their submissions this year, and the numbers don't lie, people.

As we continue to see the rest of our ongoing works roll out, make sure to keep the Masterlist handy so you can see all that HxHBB24 has to offer.

Manga/anime: Hunter x Hunter

Gon wasn't great at cooking, but he wanted to prepare a chocolate cake for Killua's birthday. So, he had asked Alluka to keep Killua away from their home for a few hours.

"It's too difficult!"

Gon's mission was failing: Killua should have returned at that moment and he hadn't finished making an unburned cake yet.

Their kitchen was in total disarray, full of smoke and burnt cakes and Gon was hopeless: he wouldn't have been able to make the cake and he didn't even have enough time to buy a present to Killua, since he had only remembered that morning his birthday would be the next day.

"What kind of boyfriend am I if I can't even remember my boyfriend's birthday?"

"Gon, why does the house smell of smoke?" Killua had arrived.

"What are you doing? The kitchen is a disaster! This is why I don't let you cook!"

"Sorry, Killua! I was only trying to prepare you a birthday cake..." His surprise was ruined: Gon was going to cry.

"F-for me? B-baka! You didn't have to- Huh? Are you crying?"

"It was supposed to be a surprise! I know I can't cook, but I forgot about your birthday and didn't have time to buy you a gift, so I thought I should have made you a cake! I asked your sister to keep you away from home for a couple of hours and I thought I could make you a cake, but I couldn't. And now it's all ruined!"

Killua was embarrassed and moved: no one had ever prepared anything for his birthday. So, he made a decision: "Gon, make it together."

"But it's your birthday!"

"Baka, there's no better birthday gift than doing something with you."

So, the two started to prepare Killua's birthday cake.

They finished at night, so they decided to watch a film together.

Gon was so tired he fell asleep halfway through the film, curled up against Killua.

"Thank you for always being with me. Gon, I love you very much."

Every Sunday Killua, Gon, Leorio and Kurapika meet up to play "Dungeon x Hunter" (loosely based on DnD 5e) with Leorio as Dungeon Master. Why is Leorio the DM, you ask? Well, these nerds all met at the college roleplaying club two years ago, but recently, with Kurapika in law school and Leorio in med school, and Killua and Gon taking harder undergrad classes, no one has time to meet up anymore. Therefore, Leorio has taken it upon himself to DM their sessions, just as an excuse to get everyone together once a week.

Alluka, also a college student, is staying with Killua during the Christmas Break. Having heard about these Sunday roleplaying sessions from Killua, and especially about the antics of a chaotic multiclass druid/barbarian who keeps adopting all the animals (Gon duh), she asks if she can come along. The crew welcome Alluka into the nerd fold as romance gradually blossoms between Gon and Killua, and Leorio fights to keep Kurapika from ghosting them all as a stress response to lawschool deadlines.

Basically a heartwarming slice of life story about nerds playing Dungeons and Dragons. I'll be updating Wednesdays and Sundays until all the chapters are posted.

He watches as Gon Freecss comes stumbling into his life, and turns it completely upside with one swift punch to the gut.

Killua doesn’t mind a world of shadows; it’s terribly convenient. He’s not about to let one happy-go-lucky heathen of a soulmate change that, fate be damned. And no, he doesn’t particularly care that said soulmate is a bit on the attractive side, or that he keeps nudging closer and offers Killua chocolate.

“Gon is exactly who I think he is. And he’s disappeared at the same time as-” Killua’s eyes dart from Illumi to the window, and he nearly glances to his desk, where the gold box rests. “At the same time as I released a jinni. I think you’re drawing the wrong conclusions.”

“Never trust the occult,” Illumi tells him. Killua knows he's right; his sister’s headstone is reminder enough.

But Killua has grown up with a sixth sense – the unusual ability to feel magic around him, traces of it on magic users, or the concentrated crackle of spirits made up of magic itself. And so Killua knows that the boy he met at boarding school is a far cry from the jinni that wears Gon’s face. But Gon is missing, and it’s Killua’s fault – he’s the one, after all, who released the jinni in the first place.
