John Dowie on Victoria Wood, the Mona Lisa, a banana and his new book
John Dowie (Photograph by Steve Ullathorne) This is the second and final part of a chat I had with the unique British performer John Dowie. (The first part is HERE.) We were supposed to be plugging his latest book Before I Go. But I just like chatting randomly with creative people. Mea culpa. ME: There’s a little-known 2003 anthology called Sit Down Comedy (put together by Malcolm Hardee and…

Cookies Before The Power Went Out
Sky was able to come early yesterday since it was supposed to be even harsher weather after 3 but it didn’t get any more threatening, in fact, par from some big wind gust it was just rain. The morning was a monsoon though. So much rain fell from the sky it was amazing. We had to go out in the early morning for his labs but after that we stayed in. Sky made chocolate chip cookies since there was…

A new pet battery instead of a dog. (Glad the truck runs but didn’t have time to drive to the shelter and to the doctor appointment.) Meh. Linda’s One-Liner Wednesday

The Cosmic Conversation
Who would be at your roundtable if you could choose anyone from beyond the mortal coil to converse with?
One hypothetical that has always captivated my attention when ensconced in the customary boredom that precedes imaginative pondering is that of a dinner roundtable with who you would invite to a dinner roundtable in the cosmic afterlife. Who would you want to engage in conversation? To ask the burning questions for which the descendants of those bygone eras and experiences are left only to grasp…

Set Up for Failure / Authoritarian Parenting
Lately I’ve been mulling over the thought or concept of how fundie families set their children up for failure. I can’t speak to a wider or societal understanding of the concept, but I can speak to my own experiences. Much of my criticism comes from how children in fundamentalism are instructed to deal with authority figures. More specifically, how children are taught blind obedience to authority…

Writing Tip #36: Writing Smart Characters Part Two (Do's)
How do you write a genius who expertly deduces things rather than a clairvoyant who checked the cheat sheet? Let's talk about it!
I could write a very long intro here, but I won’t. Let’s just jump into it! Do Show, Not Tell. This is just general writing advice, but if you’re asking, then yes, it’s very relevant here. When I say “Show” in this case, I mean specifically, show them being observant, or resourceful, or quick-witted, or even manipulative depending on who they are – just showing that they get A’s in their class,…

Day 329, Bourbon Balls
Yesterday Sky made Bourbon Balls from a recipe he found in The Encyclopedia of Desserts. The recipe didn’t include a binding agent so after chilling in the fridge he used a melon baller to form them before rolling in the mixture and they turned out pretty well. You can super taste the bourbon though. The texture was so creamy and I liked that. You can’t eat too many though. You don’t want to…

Accept One Another (Romans 15:7-13)
It is very difficult to have hope, peace, and spiritual power, whenever there is disunity.
Christian Unity, by Gisele Bauche Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written: “Therefore I will praise you among the…
