For me, these High Fantasties are unbeatable. They might be considered slow-paced by most standards now, but the atmosphere, characters, philosophical riddles and metaphors fill me with a sense of warmth and wonder.
There may not be a lot of the battlefield clashes (often a staple of the fantasy genre), but there’s peril aplenty, and often of a far more intimate kind.
These three titles/trilogies are very different from each other, but my fondness for them is very similar. Not just escapism or comfort reading (although they can certainly be that, too), these books have things to say. And I love the way in which they say them.
Earthsea trilogy, by Ursula K. Le Guin (1968-73)
Riddle-Master trilogy, by Patricia A. McKillip (1976-79)
Fortress in the Eye of Time, by C.J. Cherryh (1994)

Bucky pinning you down so you can’t squirm and he’s just sitting inside you while he tortures your clit feeling you clench around him. He makes you cum over and over until he finally cums.
Overstimulation + super soldier stamina = …
- 🍯
Dear God, I know I just don't have it in me to behave during cock-warming. When it comes down to it, I genuinely have no patience at all 😵💫
"You..." Bucky begins, pressing you down onto the bed before gripping your ankles and forcing you to flip over onto your front. "Have a problem with control."
With your face turned away from him, you can't help but smile to yourself. No one has ever said it out loud but you know he's right.
Being in control is where you're most comfortable. No hands are safer than your own. Except maybe his. You know he won't fuck this up.
"And you..." He continues, gathering your wrists behind your back, holding them tightly with one hand. "Need to learn how it feels to have control taken from you. Do you understand?"
As soon as you begin to nod your head, you feel him start to tape around your wrists, holding them together behind your back. Once he's content they're secure, he sits on the edge of the bed, facing the mirror before he pulls you onto his lap.
"Legs spread over the top of mine." He orders and you do as you're told, not because you have to but because you want to.
You notice the way your cunt is already glistening in the mirror and you're almost embarrassed because he hasn't even touched you yet.
"Fuck, you're made for this." He groans, lining his cock up to your slick entrance and you wonder if he's holding his breath too while he slides into you, as deep as your bodies will allow.
You're obsessed with the sight in front of you; your own naked body, with your legs spread so far apart you can see how your cunt is stuffed full of him.
Being shorter though, your feet can't touch the ground like this. There's no way you'll get enough leverage to fuck yourself on him but as soon as you start to tell him that, he silences you with two thick fingers between your lips.
"I'm not letting you fuck me." His free hand roams over your body, squeezing your breasts, pinching your nipples and then settling between your spread thighs.
"I'm going to play with you. I'm going to see how much you can take. I'm going to work out exactly how you like your clit stroked and I'm going to do that until your legs are shaking and your body won't let you cum any more. Maybe then I'll fuck you but sweetheart, that will be hours from now." His breath is hot against the side of your face, his fingers slipping from your mouth to your waist while he starts to flick gently against your clit.
"I'm going to start slowly. I'm going to do everything I can to drag this out as long as possible. I can feel every clench and flutter of this pretty little cunt and I'm going to enjoy it until you're dripping over my balls." At this rate, it won't be long until you're dripping onto the carpet, never mind over him. You dreamed he'd want to take control like this but you never imagined the way your body would respond.
"And then, when you've cum more times than you can handle, I'm going to tell you that I love you while I fuck you like I don't."

My obsession with Yennefer (long post!)
Yennefer was ALWAYS my favourite character from an entire Witcher franchise and easily my favourite character from any fictional story. I drew her, sketched her, wrote about her obsessively since I first read the Witcher in 2013.
Let's give it a try and gather all of the Yennefer pieces and sketches I ever did, because I had a Witcher brainrot for many, many years. Spoler alert: all of my Yens are totally different!
This one from 2014 was probably inspired by the The Bounds of Reason.

The one that was inspired by the very first Yennefer render from CDProjektRed.

The weird one. I don't really like her.
2015! The Shard of Ice Yennefer:

Don't have much to say about this one either, I guess it was an experiment.
The one I don't remember drawing. Somehow I predicted the Netflix!Yen having these exact eyeshadows.

Oh I love this one! This is a mix of game!Yen and book!Yen:

The next one is pure game!Yennefer, even though I never liked her in-game design (especially the bangs, the small nose and the lips):

Basically, this is how I saw it: game!Yen meeting the book!Yen.

Late 2015/early 2016 traditional sketches (yes, the second one is Yen from the Hexer):

THE FAVOURITE ONE. I haven't watched Farscape until 2018 and when I first saw Claudia Black I GASPED, because to me she looked exactly like this Yen version I drew back in 2016 and still is madly in love with.

Apparently there was an infinished second piece of this exact Yen design but I never posted the high resolution of it which is kinda sad.

2017! I saw early game!Yen designs and did a sketchy portrait of her. And then I decided to make the second version with the book!Yen:

Finally, Yennefer from 2022 (original sketch and the colored sketch). This design seems the most book accurate to me, but I still love all the previous ones I did (except the weird one, she is creepy).

And the last, but not the least: my own Thanedd ball outfit for Netflix!Yen, portrayed by Anya Chalotra.

And a small bonus! The very first Yennefer sketch I ever did (2013!)

When Cloud was a kid he had a diary(though he’d say it was a journal), he would usually write about things like his frustration with the village and how he wished they’d stop mistreating him and his mom, how he wished that the other kids would let him hangout with them even just once, and how he wanted Tifa to notice him. Then after he found out about Sephiroth, after that he mainly started writing about how amazing, handsome, strong, etc Sephiroth was, how he wanted to be a hero just like him, how he wanted to meet him one day. He even wrote that when he was older he was going to marry Sephiroth. When Cloud went to Midgar he left his diary at home, and after what happened to Nibelheim Cloud of course assumes that it was destroyed. So imagine his shock, confusion, and anger when Sephiroth not only shows up again, but he’s reading out loud his diar-journal! He’s specifically reading one of the sections Cloud wrote about him.
Sephiroth, reading from the diary: If I could be even half as good as Sephiroth, then maybe Tifa would notice me.
Cloud: STOP!
Sephiroth: If only I could be good enough for-well this part is just depressing. Let's skip forward, shall we?
Cloud: ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Sephiroth: Ah! Here is a good part. March 10: dear diary, I think I have a new crush. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I can't stop thinking about Sephiroth. Even the grainy photos of him in the newspaper look amazing. He's simply too perfect: the sort of guy any girl would want to marry. Honestly, even I want to marry him.
Cloud: I want to die so badly.
Sephiroth: Oh, there are drawings on this next page.
Cloud, remembering what he drew back then: *passes out in sheer embarrassment*

I don't want my favorite characters to be right! Or morally clean! Or justified! Or unproblematic!
It is not a deal breaker for them to be abusive or cruel or murderous or selfish or unkind or to make mistakes without atoning for them!
I just want them to be interesting, layered, compelling
I want to be ENGAGED when I'm reading about them I want to have things that make me THINK and Question, I want to be inspired to ANALYZE them and rotate them in the rotisserie spit of my mind until their meat becomes tender and they fall off the bone

Spooky scary skeletons for halloween!!
Tamsyn Muir's Harrow the Ninth was a book I'd been waiting for from the moment I finished Gideon. Now I'm waiting for the next one!
I read Harrow in about two days and at one point had to stop and put the book down because I was laughing so hard I couldn't hold the book still enough to see the words. If you've read Harrow you'll know exactly the chapter-end i mean.
I loved this book as much as I loved its predecessor, especially every moment our second narrator complained. Look I know what I like and I like lesbians with bone magic in space hanging out with god. Happy Harroween!!

High Fantasy Mastery in Scott Lynch's Red Seas Under Red Skies
Another Scott Lynch read under my belt with Red Seas Under Red Skies, though it wasn’t so easily accomplished as The Lies of Locke Lamora. That is through no fault of the writing or plot and purely my time management and multiple focuses tearing attention away from my reading. What a read Red Seas Under Red Skies is! There’s thievery, treachery, double-crossing, assassination attempts, convoluted…

This might be an incredibly specific ask, and I may be asking in the wrong places, however..
Are there any good wlw novels set in fantasy/history, with the same writing style and vibe as danmei novels such as TGCF, MDZS, Ballad of Sword and Wine etc?
Any fictional setting will do, I'm just putting feelers out there since it's been a long time since I've found a book series I've truly fallen in love with :(

2024 reads / storygraph
The Gods Below
high fantasy, start of a series
a world in ruins after a divine war, which ended with one god taking over and slowly spreading magical Restoration - rejuvenating the land, but transforming any any humans who survive
follows two sisters who are separated when the Restoration sweeps through their home: one who becomes a sinkhole miner, collecting precious gems, who becomes part of a resistance when she discovers she can channel the magic from them
and her younger sister who becomes changed, and is rescued by a woman who trains her into a devoted godkiller, hunting down all other remaining gods
as well as an inventor traveling deep into the earth with his best friend, in hopes of finding the gods’ realm to find a cure for her sickness, and his cousin, searching for a way to restore her family’s ruined reputation
and a god far in the past, at the beginning of the war
bi, aro, m/f & f/f
#the gods below#andrea stewart#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#Really inventive high fantasy world with some fascinating worldbuilding concepts and interesting characters#Mullayne’s narrative felt more unique and separate from the rest but it might have been my favourite. Or maybe that’s just the aromanticism#(only briefly discussed but clearly aro - probably aroace? but (lack of) romance is what is explicitly discussed)#I’m definitely hoping for more of the sister relationship next book#I did find it odd that some characters were in first person POV and some were in third. I generally prefer consistency in that#Did the sapphic relationship come out of nowhere a bit? yeah.#but also it doesn’t claim to be anything other than a sudden connnection. i'm not mad about it. uhaul etc#i do have very little patience for brooding immortal winged man love interests. the soft spot for cats does not change this.#so I found that other relationship a bit boring.

You’ve read Lolita ?!! Such a great but misunderstood book
idk if youve ever seen this interview of halsey talking about how she would obsessively watch romeo and juliet over and over again because she just felt something in her being pulled at by it so much? that's exactly how i feel about lolita. ive read it once when i was 14, once when i was 17, and once again recently and it destroys me everytime. i cant stop reading it. even during the IB, my EE topic was literally about lolita's abuse
it's an INCREDIBLE book in that nabokov is a master of his craft. but it rips me to shreds everytime. it makes me feel simultaneously 8 years old and whatever age i am when i read. i want to wrap dolores in a hug and hold her forever
#i have so many emotions about lolita#i was thinking about it again recently bc i was talking to a guy and said lolita is my favourite book and he had the audacity to ask me#'is it because of a fantasy of yours 👀'#i felt so#ugh like i wanted to rip my body up into pieces#lolita is SUCH a misunderstood book#ask#anon#after my recent read the ending broke my heart even more#it's the way throughout everything#she still called humbert 'dad'

i think lots of us forget what truly makes art and media so captivating; the ability to he transported into a different point of view, and to view the world from a new perspective, one that you never would've understood had you not stumbled upon the narrative that you're reading. pigeonholing yourself into a genre seems so common nowadays, but media consumption has always been about understanding how other people see the world we live in!!
#I'm saying this bc I'm sooooo tired of recommending a book to someone to have them go#“oh nah I'm a romance reader actually”#“oh I mainly read fantasy”#not saying you shouldn't have a favourite genre obviously not the point!! but I think lots of us fall into this habit#which is aided by the rise of tiktok/social media's love of the Personal Brand#where we don't try to explore new genres and povs#if you don't like the book don't read it! but don't limit your horizons by never picking up something that doesn't neatly fit into your vib#this isn't just tiktok romance girls btw this is also the dark academia girls & the mystery readers#and so much of the fun of reading/watching movies comes from discovering these things that#you didn't know about!!!!#most books and movies that have blown my mind have been completely out of left field#c.txt
