Many of us take on a lot over our lives, and that winding up in our bodies is tension that builds over the years in our jaw, back, legs, stomach, chest etc. Sometimes we donā€™t realize that tension is there until it has built up so much that it takes a long time, and a lot of work to unwind. I tweaked a knee many months ago and am only now really addressing the tension in my legs that I knew was there, but hadnā€™t addressed despite decades of running. I didnā€™t stretch enough, or really face what was going on in my calf muscles. Stretching is an excellent way to release stress and any pent up anxiety or negative energy. Among other benefits, it helps to increase flexibility, elongates the muscles, aids in recovery from soreness, helps prevent injury and also helps to improve posture. Breathe in deeply as you begin your stretch and exhale during it. Focus on calming and inner peace as you ward off any mental distractions. Any form of yoga is a great way to achieve this and incorporate it into your program. Although Iā€™m far from a yoga master myself, I can surely attest to its benefits. Running. ā€¢ ā€¢ Iā€™ve never been one to talk about my feelings, problems or fears. From time to time, I do enjoy deep conversations and heart to heartā€™s, as long as they donā€™t consist of analyzing my feelings and over sharing. ā€¢ ā€¢ I donā€™t feel the need to ā€œtalk about my feelingsā€, and if I ever do get a bit overwhelmed - then I prefer to run or workout, to release the tension. ā€¢ ā€¢ I have discovered my love for running a few years back, and it quickly became my psychologist. I like to find a nice route, with interesting and pretty scenery, put my favorite music on, and just let my body move, let go of all the pent up emotions. ā€¢ ā€¢ A couple of years ago I started having trouble with my legs and could no longer run (I will elaborate on that in a future blog post). It was almost unbearable and impossible to let go of, and it was almost irreplaceable. ā€¢ ā€¢ Recently I have finally been able to run again, and I am still building up to the distances and stamina I used to have, but it is already working itā€™s magic. I truly believe that running, or any kind of sport that gets our body active and moving, is the best kind of cure for tension, stress and anxiety. ā€¢ ā€¢ How about you?
