Facebook's new name reminds me of one thing and one thing only

Meta from Pittige Tijden!

Only Dutch people my age will probably get this so I'll explain.

First off - it was the 90s ok. It was in like '97 (and no don't remind me how long ago that is)

Pittige Tijden was a sort of parody of the biggest (and by now only) soap in the Netherlands called Goede tijden slechte tijden (shortened to GTST or goede tijden) and it was part of this Saturday morning kids show called telekids.

It was all super over the top with the two hosts playing every character and celebrity guests usually having a part in it too (I remember this epic sketch with Peter Andre as the surprise baby daddy and he was just confused™ about the whole thing).

Around that time there was a trans (I think) character on GTST and her name was Meta. I'm not really sure what her story was anymore (I was 10 or 11 ok , it's been a while) but I vaguely remember the reveal that Meta was a man being a BIG Deal.

Of course with a character like that (first trans character on prime time) on the show, Pittige Tijden had to do a parody of her too. All crazy and over the top - played by Carlo Boszhard (one half of the presenter duo) and they even made a song for her to the tune of viva la diva - the song Dana International won Eurovision with in '98.

And all this Meta talk from Zuckerberg & Co just reminds me of that. So thanks for the nostalgia Mark!

This is the real Meta from GTST. Yes her name was actually Meta.

I was obsessed with this show growing up (I had about a dozen VHS tapes with episodes that I would watch over and over again) so I wanted to share some visuals cause I feel like the aesthetics of the show is a very important aspect of if.

The Castle:

The kids (and the 400yo wizard boy):

The Doorman (a robot who likes riddles), the librarian cat, Celeste the snake (who lives in the living room tree, yes she is pink), Mau and Godofredo, the mouse and his mouse-shaped car:

Etevaldo (the alien), Bongô (pizza delivery guy), and Penelope (a famous journalist):

I could stop here but I won't. Here are the birds that lived inside the nest on branch of the living room tree and played several different instruments:

the fairies who lived inside the chandelier:

The mad scientists Tíbio and Perônio (literally tibia and fibula, as in the leg bones), the aforementioned Telekid (kid who lived in the TV), Caipora (a folklore character who showed up whenever someone whistled), Aunt Morgana and her jackdaw Adelaide, Uncle Victor and his clock (which announced whenever he'd be arriving):

tbh this is barely scratching the surface of the show

The furniture is sort of alive too, I remember a piano that played by itself and a bunch of dancers who were the notes on the music sheet

There was a graffiti artist who showed up sometimes to paint a random wall

There was a song for learning how to count and each finger was a puppet and sometimes they would show up in the story as well (I remember there was one who wore sunglasses)

There were a pair of boots who talked in rhyme and whenever they spoke you would hear a guitar shredding in the bg so you knew they were cool

Everything was colorful and wonderful and I can only say that this show made learning so much fun I wish more stuff could be produced with this level of quality and love

and honestly I feel like if brazilian media products were as internationally popular as american ones, this show would be on par with the muppets as a cultural sensation

Actual real things about the plot of 90's Brazilian children's show Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum

The main character was a 400-year-old boy wizard who lived with his aunt and uncle in a giant-ass castle in the middle of a big city that no one in the city knew about

He lived with his aunt and uncle because his parents and sister were on a trip to Mars and he didn't want to go

The castle was secret but there was a pizza guy who'd pop in once in a while (maybe he worked for a company that delivered pizza to the supernatural?).

There was a kid who lived inside a tv and that was treated as completely normal.

In the first episode he lured the three other protagonists to the castle by making their ball float to the castle entrance (he was bored and wanted friends).

The castle's librarian was a talking orange cat.

There was an alien named Etevaldo who would sometimes pop in for a visit.

There was a random tree in the middle of the castle's foyer where some birds and a talking pink anaconda lived

The anaconda was called Celeste

There was a little purple monster who lived in the castle sewers called Mau (literally, "Bad") who wanted to be bad and a villain but he was really bad at it

There was no explanation as to what Mau was -- he was just this furry purple thing and everyone just went with it

Mau had a rat henchman named Godofredo (Godfrey) who had anxiety problems

The castle had a mouse who drove a mouse-shaped car and everyone was like "Yeah, that's normal, be careful so you don't step on it"

The villain was Doutor Abobrinha (literally, "Doctor Pumpkin"; abobrinha is also slang for "lies", implying he was a liar), who was a realtor who wanted to tear the castle down to gentrify the neighbourhood

There are too many. Telekids is one of my favourites, but I also really loved lots of animated series such as Dungeons & Dragons.

I didn’t read a book last year. Do Dungeons & Dragons books count? If so the 5th edition player handbook and the Tyranny of the Dragons campaign book.

I have too many favourites. Let’s go with Storm though.

I love the night, but day is better.

Persoonlijke ketting

Wij houden van knutselen, tekenen en mooie dingen maken. Maar als het prikbord vol hangt en je hebt oma en je vriendinnen allemaal al 5 tekeningen gegeven, dan moet je soms iets anders verzinnen om voor ze te maken. Want niets zegt zoveel “Ik vind je lief en belangrijk” als iets wat je zelf hebt gemaakt.

Daarom vinden we het ook altijd leuk om naast een gekocht cadeautje of iets wat van ons zelf geweest is, een zelf gemaakt cadeautje te geven. Iets wat we met aandacht en moeite voor iemand gemaakt hebben.

Twee weken geleden hebben Ilse en ik nog een paar kralen armbandjes voor haarzelf en jarige vriendinnen gemaakt en afgelopen week waren dat deze leuke kettingen.

Naamketting in de style van het TELEKIDS logo:

De kettinkjes zijn van die veiligheidskettinkjes die bij een identiteitsplaatje horen en breken wanneer een kindje ermee zou blijven hangen. Ik kocht ze voor €1,50 bij de ijzerwarenhandel. De hangers maakte we van Krimpie Dinkie. Je kiest een plaatje van je favoriete figuur zoals Chloe voor Ilse, Nijntje voor Eva, ons portret gemaakt door Wendy voor mij of je tekent iets uit je hoofd, dat kan natuurlijk ook! Doordat het materiaal van Krimpie Dinkie (semi) doorzichtig is, kan je het makkelijk overtrekken. Ik gebruik watervaste stiften van Edding. Zorg dat je ook een groot genoeg boogje tekenen waar je een gaatje met de perforator in kan maken zodat je hem aan een kettinkje kan hangen! Maak het gaatje niet te dicht bij de rand, dan breekt het snel. Daarna knipt je het figuur uit, hier hebben de jongste kindjes wel wat hulp bij nodig, want het materiaal kan scheuren. Ik gebruik naast een ‘gewone’ schaar ook een heel scherp en puntig nagelschaartje voor de kleinste hoekjes en bochten.

Daarna gaan de figuren in de oven op 150°C. Blijf erbij staan, want het is zo gepiept. De figuren worden 3x zo klein en 9x zo dik. Eerst zie je ze omkrullen en denk je dat het mislukt. Daarna krullen ze weer uit, laat ze dan nog 10 seconde liggen voordat je ze eruit pakt. Zijn ze nog een beetje krom, probeer ze dan in de oven wat platter te krijgen en haal ze er één voor één uit. Ik leg ze op een theedoek en zet daarna meteen de zware vijzel erop zodat ze heel plat afkoelen, eenmaal koud, zijn ze keihard en kunnen ze niet meer van vorm veranderen alleen nog breken :-I
