How to Host Successful Virtual Events for Non-Profits
First off, clear planning is your best friend. Decide on the goals of your event. Are you aiming to raise funds, increase awareness, or maybe both? Once you have your goals set, everything else will start falling into place, from your target audience to the platforms you’ll use.

however bad of a day you're having, know that it's not nearly as bad as whatever the Crowdstrike security team is going through since waking up this morning

Google is hiding the truth, and playing with words to change the facts, and to change the truth about what happened in Nuseirat camp, it's literally censoring the Nuseirat Massacre.

genuinely not to be a dick but i kind of wonder if the QSMP would’ve gone in a different direction if quackity… had played on it more. like, i’ll give the benefit of the doubt that he wasn’t online so infrequently entirely by choice— but things like the purgatory event(lorewise), the map reset, the introduction of an economy that puts items previously gained through labor behind an immovable paywall… would these things have been approved in a world where the owner of the server was an active player? i don’t think it would’ve solved the labor issues, but there’s also room to consider that it would’ve made quackity more accessible, too, to possibly have these issues brought to him sooner if someone was brave enough. i dunno. probably not worth theorizing about at this point, but… i started doing it anyways

CrowdStrike Preliminary Incident Review
CrowdStrike released an explanation for what, exactly, happened that sent the world crashing down. Most of it is completely unnecessary background data, but this is the relevant passage:
What Happened on July 19, 2024? On July 19, 2024, two additional IPC Template Instances were deployed. Due to a bug in the Content Validator, one of the two Template Instances passed validation despite containing problematic content data.
(We released two updates on this date. They were checked with a program. There was a problem with the program, which said they were fine, even though one of them was not.)
Based on the testing performed before the initial deployment of the Template Type (on March 05, 2024), trust in the checks performed in the Content Validator, and previous successful IPC Template Instance deployments, these instances were deployed into production.
(We thought it would be fine because we tested the old stuff before, and we trusted our program.)
When received by the sensor and loaded into the Content Interpreter, problematic content in Channel File 291 resulted in an out-of-bounds memory read triggering an exception. This unexpected exception could not be gracefully handled, resulting in a Windows operating system crash (BSOD).
(It was not fine.)
Basically, they used a program to validate the updates they were sending out, and the program said the updates would work, so they sent it out. They did not actually try it on a computer to see if it would work before deploying it to every active computer on their network, thus sending all of them into an unrecoverable crash.
Wow.

A lot of folks are responding to the whole Reddit situation by calling for the return of decentralised forums, and I think it's important to remember that, contrary to certain popular narratives, the reason early 2000s forum culture has fallen by the wayside is not because people are Just Lazy. Certainly, ease of use is part of it, but a much larger part of it is how vulnerable self-hosted forums are.
Basically, the problem is that even the largest and most carefully managed self-hosted forums can be rendered unusable more or less indefinitely by a single sufficiently determined hostile actor. This can take the form of both attacks on the forum's social infrastructure (i.e., via sock-puppet accounts, botting, organised "raids", etc.) and attacks on its technical infrastructure (i.e., via hacking, DDoS, etc.). In either case, a self-hosted forum has no real defence, and the majority of decentralised forum communities survive only by virtue of their relative obscurity; once a self-hosted forum manages to attract the attention of That One Guy who's willing to devote his life to shitting the place up over some microscopic slight, it's effectively game over.
Right now, there are essentially only two mitigation strategies:
Gathering huge numbers of communities under a single, massively centralised technical infrastructure that's simply too large and robust for any one hostile actor to bring down; and
Hardening the community's social infrastructure either by going private and invite only (i.e., the Discord approach), or by making use of a vast centralised pool of volunteer labour to aggressively enforce community standards (i.e., the Reddit approach).
To be clear, these are not intractable problems; other solutions may well exist. However, any proposed plan for bringing decentralised public forums back needs to address them. If you're going in operating under the assumption that forums have become marginalised simply because corporations are evil and people are lazy, you're setting yourself up to learn the hard way why self-hosted forums no longer seem to be capable of growing beyond a certain point.

Off the grid König just shifted something in my brain… where do I get a man like this
Off the grid people are CRAZY you should def try to hook up with one. They're adorable and tough and hairy and will always treat you like a princess whether you like it or not.
It's just that you can't find them anywhere and when you do accidentally bump into one, he might offer you some dumpster dived fish or a nice roakdill badger cooked in cream. Then he'll give you a lecture on Carrington Event and complains how hot it is, he needs to take off his shirt (the room temperature is like 15°c)

Learn about Congo 🇨🇩 We cannot , after finding out so shamefully late about the genocide, continue as per. We have to change our choices and make the effort to be as ethical as we can and talk about this!
