Discover the fascinating world of gravitational waves.
Tumblr media
Each year, the B-PHOT Student Chapter celebrates the International Day of Light with their Light Night event. In this year’s edition, you will get the chance to be inspired by Professor Anja Boisen, from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), who will discuss different biosensing techniques and how light is involved in drug delivery and monitoring.
Tumblr media
On top of that, this event will let you discover the fascinating world of gravitational waves via the lecture of Professor Michael Vervaeke and Professor Alexandre Sevrin, both affiliated to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Additionally, the B-PHOT Student Chapter will announce the winner of the Photo Contest 2023 at the end of the event, followed by a reception with drinks and food. Light Night 2023 will take place on the 18th of April from 18h to 22h at Pilar Box (VUB campus).

Shirt Swap II
Hardersson x Child!Reader
Part of The Big Adventures Universe
Summary: You get a package
Tumblr media
When you and Momma get home from the park, there's a package outside of your door.
You scamper up the front steps and kick at it.
Momma sighs. "Princesse, what have I told you about kicking boxes?"
"Not to," You huff," Because they might be fragile. But! But, it's got my name on it! Is it stuff for the new house?"
Momma and Morsa have been busy packing a lot lately. They say it's because you're going back to Germany and they're getting stuff ready for the new house.
They've got the World Cup first though so the summer is going to be very stressful and busy, which is why they're packing everything now.
"If it was stuff for the new house," Momma says fondly as she picks up the package and opens the front door," Then it wouldn't be addressed to you."
"But it is for me!" You insist, pointing at the label," See, it's got my name!"
It has got your name but it's also got a bunch of other labels on it too.
Momma gets a box cutter and opens it. "It looks like it's come from abroad," She says, cutting through the layers of tape and pulling the flaps up.
"Ooh," You say, kneeling by the coffee table as you peak inside.
There's a little letter at the very top but you're more interested in the many jerseys underneath it.
You grab at them, pulling each out carefully. You recognise a lot of them as Barcelona jerseys - the blue and red design recognisable easily.
Momma reads the letter as you go through them.
Most of them are Barcelona shirts like you thought but there's a white shirt too with blue accents and the crest of three lions on it.
"Momma!" You gasp as you hold it between your hands," It's a Keira Walsh shirt! Momma, look!"
You hold it up triumphantly, a look of complete awe on your face.
Momma's smiling at you. "I can see that," She says, waving the letter at your face," It's signed too. Have you noticed?"
You hadn't at first but, as you look at your little pile, you notice that all of them are signed.
"Wow."
"They're from Aitana," Momma says as she reads you bits of the letter," She hopes that you're doing well and she's sorry that it took so long. Please enjoy the collection of club and national team jerseys she's gotten from her teammates."
You take little time to think before you're tearing through the box again, throwing jerseys around as you dig through it.
You've got two Keira Walsh jerseys - her England one and her Barcelona one.
You've got another Caro one too, her Norway shirt this time instead of an old Wolfsburg one. You get an Engen shirt too. You vaguely recall Engen in your memory, at your last year at Wolfsburg with her and Auntie Frido (who had also encased just her Barcelona jersey because you had so many of her Swedish ones).
You brush your fingers over the fabric of the red Caro and Ingrid Norway shirts. It's red. You like red. It's not quite Arsenal red but red is red and you think the Norway shirts are really cool.
You tell as much to Momma.
She laughs. "You know, technically, my Denmark jerseys are red too."
You roll your eyes. "They're red-pink," You tell her," This is proper red. Not Arsenal proper red but still more red than red-pink."
You close off that line of argument by digging through the box again. You stop at a Barcelona shirt. You run your finger over the number eleven on the back and the name too.
You're very good at reading in all four of your languages so you spell it out quickly.
"A-lex-ia," You sound out slowly," Alexia." You frown. You think you've met someone called Alexia a few times before but never someone with a surname like that. "That's a weird last name."
Momma laughs again. "It's her first name, princesse. Sometimes, when you get very good and very famous, you get to put just your first name on your shirt."
You think about your keeper gloves, hanging out on your desk. You haven't packed them yet, not when you still have time to go to practice with Zećira and Ann-Katrin.
You look back at the shirt in your hands.
"I want to have my first name on my jerseys," You say softly, not exactly to Momma but you know that she can hear you," I want to be really good like that someday too."
Pernille smiles at you, not saying anything as your stare down at Putellas' jersey with a little crinkle in your brow. You keep looking at it for a moment longer, completely in awe at the singular first name on it before grasping for your England Keira Walsh shirt.
Momma helps you put it on just as the front door opens again.
Morsa appears in the doorway, hopping on one foot as she lifts the other in the air to take off her shoe. She looks at the carnage with one brow raised.
"Did a bomb go off?" She jokes," I don't remember ordering any new jerseys."
"Aitana Bonmatí sent them," Momma replies," Remember, I told you that we met her during the friendly against Spain? She was quite taken with our princesse." She pulls the jersey over your head. "So much so that she rounded up enough jerseys for maybe two extra teams."
"I've got two Keira Walsh jerseys, Morsa!" You exclaim excitedly. "And-And Caro and Ingrid's red Norway jerseys! They're so cool! Norway's so cool!"
Morsa looks a bit horrified at that. It seems that she can take you wearing Denmark jerseys but a line has definitely been crossed when you start chattering on about how cool Norway is.
"Alright," Morsa cuts you off right before you launch into a tirade about how cool Caro's dribbling skills are," Well, you've got new jerseys. So, what does that mean?"
You gasp. It completely skipped your mind and you scamper over to the hallway wall to stand against it, smiling proudly as Morsa snaps a picture of you wearing every new jersey Aitana sent you.
"Alright," Momma says once she's helped you back into your Keira Walsh England shirt," Now, Aitana also attached her number so how about we send her a little video?"
You grin at the camera, little fingers tugging at the hem of your shirt. "Thank you, Aitana!"
"For?"
"For my new jerseys! Thank you!"

Chapter 4. F1 Giggles & Tea
"Another week, another episode of F1 Giggles & Tea," the girl with the blonde hair opened the podcast with her friend, her voice carrying a cheerful tone. "Today we are gonna talk about Matilde Jørgensen."
The girl with brunette hair, the co-host of the podcast, nodded and smiled widely. "The girl boss of the grid."
"The team principal of Ferrari."
"Not gonna lie, she is living the dream," the blonde girl said.
"Although she isn't the first female team principal in F1, she certainly is one of the youngest."
"Only 29 years old!" The girl with blonde wavy hair raised her eyebrow. "Did you know who she was before she joined Ferrari?"
The brunette slowly shook her head. "She wasn't on my radar until she debuted as team principal. The thing in F1 is that you will not be known until you do something special, or if you are a head of department or a principal."
"Yeah, it's a shame, actually. There are so many people working behind the scenes. But I looked Matilde up, because I feel like we need to give her a platform. She is a team principal, but I'm quite curious to know how she got there," the girl with the brown hair said and took a sip of her coffee. Even though the podcast was called F1 Giggles & Tea, the girl preferred iced coffees. But the name was nice. The co-host nodded. "Matilde Jørgensen is from Denmark. I found on her Instagram that she was born on October the 8th, and she is 29 years old-"
"I still cannot believe she is a team principal under 30. It's really impressive."
"I mean, it feels like Ferrari had no candidates but Matilde, like she was the only one who applied for the job, no offence to Matilde." They both laughed. "Anyway, she studied at the Technical University of Denmark: Engineering in IT and Economics, also doing a mathematical degree at the same time. She got a placement at Red Bull Racing in IT. After that, she got a job within Red Bull as a strategist, and worked her way up to Senior Strategist, working closely with Hannah Smitz. And now she is the team principal of Ferrari."
The brunette looked impressed. "It sounds so easy," she said. "And that while only being 29 years old."
"I'm 25 and I can't handle my job at the supermarket."
"I'm still crying myself to sleep over my studies." Laughter filled the podcast. "But to our comparison: how is she doing her job so far? Let's compare her to last year's season."
The girl with blonde hair nodded and grabbed her notes. "Bahrain, 2022: Charles p1 and Carlos p2 In 2023: Charles P5 and Carlos p4. Saudi Arabia, 2022: Charles p2 and Carlos p3. In 2023: Charles p4 and Carlos p5. Australia, 2022: Charles p1 and Carlos DNF. In 2023: Charles p2 and Carlos p4," she said. "Baku was after Monaco, but this year it is before Miami. So Baku, 2022: Charles DNF and Carlos DNF. In 2023: Charles p4 and Carlos p2."
"Hmm, it sounds like the start of 2022 was more promising than this year," the brunette mused.
"Yes, but let's be honest: the end of 2022 was a disaster for Ferrari. God knows what Mathilde had to deal with when she got there. I can imagine it was a mess," the blonde girl smirked. Let's compare the results so far after four races, shall we? Charles had 78 points in 2022 and currently has 53 points. Carlos had 33 points in 2022 and now has 46 points. In 2022 Ferrari had 96 points and they have 99 points in 2023. An overall difference of three points."
It was silent.
"It's... I hope they will stay consistent."
The blonde girl sighed. "I mean, Carlos has more points now. And the team has three more points. It's not a downward trend. Considering where Ferrari came from last season, it has improved already. I feel like the team is doing better, but we will find that out later this season."
"I hope this girl boss will fix this team. But first the next Grand Prix: Miami!"
* * *
The Floria sun blazed brightly in the midday sky as Matilde and the team gathered at the entrance of their hotel in Miami. The past few weeks had been a whirlwind of race weekends and a lot of travel and it was intense. Someone from the media team proposed to go to the beach with the entire team. It was a much-needed break; it helped to adjust to the jet lag as well.
Matilde, who wore blue and white coloured linen shorts, a dark blue top and a white shirt, exchanged smiles with her colleagues as they gathered around in the lobby. The atmosphere was quite uncomfortable, perhaps it was because their team principal, their boss, was joining the team on a day out. At first, Matilde doubted going, because she would feel uncomfortable too, but Gemma convinced her to go, to work on the team building.
A few minutes later, the team made their way to the beach. Groups were formed, and people were talking. Matilde found an English girl among the hospitality people, they bonded because they both used to work for different teams. Liza used to work at Alpine and she started her job at Ferrari last year, one year ahead of Matilde. They could talk about Red Bull and Alpine and the things they had gone through.
The beach was a lively tableau of vibrant umbrellas, laughter and crashing waves. As Matilde and her team claimed an entire beach club, they settled down and ordered some drinks. Matilde sat down on a sunbed, looking around; almost the entire team was Italian, but there was a mix of nationalities and personalities after all. However, the common thread that bound them was their shared passion for racing.
Some people decided on dipping in the sea, others decided to work on their tan, or spend time together. Matilde grabbed a book out of her bag and decided to keep it to relax. She was reading the latest book by Norwegian writer Jo Nesbø.
"Oh, Jo Nesbø. My mum reads his books as well," Liza said. "She thinks they are amazing."
Matilde closed the book, realising reading wouldn't work. Her mind wasn't committed to it, she had too many thoughts racing through her head. "He is one of my favourite writers."
"It's so cliche, but I'm currently into reading those cheesy romances. Sarah Jio is currently my favourite writer," Liza replied and took a sip of her mojito.
A smirk left Matilde's mouth. "I read The Last Camellia on the plane. It's easy to read and it has such an amazing plot."
Liza nodded. "I loved that one too. Cliche, but good." She looked at the sea. "I don't know if you know this, or heard it, but there's a podcast going viral on TikTok. The viral episode is an episode about you."
Matilde raised her eyebrows. "I had no idea. What did they say?"
"Not much, but they talked about who you are since they didn't know much about you. They kinda dug into your history. Nothing personal came up, which made them frustrated," Liza chuckled. "Nothing negative."
"Who?"
"Two girls, they're hosting the 'F1 Giggles & Tea' podcast."
Matilde nodded. "I see." For the last few weeks, the media and fans have been very critical of Matilde. And she had to agree with them, because she too would create an opinion on a new team principal as well, but now that she was a team principal and people had an opinion on her, she had a different opinion on it. It felt unfair, because no one knew what she was doing and all the negative quotes were harsh on her. "I mean, I already read a few articles, positive articles, on how much they praise me for being a female team principal."
"You're doing a great job, Matilde. Ignore the media. Claire Williams did the same."
"As much as I respect Claire, things went downhill at Williams when she was the team principal."
"Then show them that you can do it. The Italians are tough, but you got this."
"I like your way of thinking."
"Give me a raise and we will talk again."
A laugh rolled over Matilde's lips. "We will see. Alright, enough about the media, I'm going to swim."
Liza nodded. "I will stay here and finish my drink. Will be there in a few minutes."
"Yes." Matilde got up and put on her sunglasses, making her way to the sea.
It was not like she was insecure about her body, but she knew that she didn't have a model body. She didn't have a six-pack, toned legs or arms. There was fat, she was midsized, skinny fat. And she was fine with it, she wasn't a gym girlie. But seeing all these models on the beach made her feel slightly uncomfortable.
While the team was enjoying a beach day, Charles had to follow his training scheme. He and his trainer Andrea were also on the beach. Andrea pushed Charles to his limit and it worked; Charles hated it and Andrea liked it.
As the training session progressed, Charles couldn't help but let his gaze wander occasionally towards the beach. He noticed some people from his team and it made him jealous. They relaxed on their day off and he still had to train. His eyes fell on a woman in a black bikini who was walking towards the sea. He tightened his jaw. His eyes lingered on Matilde's figure, she had beautiful curves. His attention was divided between the workout and the sight before him.
Andrea, noticing Charles' distraction, raised an eyebrow. "Focus," he said, his tone stern. "You're here to train, not to daydream."
Charles snapped back to attention, giving a sheepish grin. "Yep."
"Keep your focus on the workout, or you won't win."
As the workout continued, Charles struggled to keep his attention on his training. His eyes were inexplicably drawn to Matilde. She was talking to some other girl, both only having their feet in the water. Charles found himself following her movements, his concentration shattered.
Matilde walked further into the sea, the cool water offering a refreshing feeling from the sun's heat. She listened to Liza, who shared a story about a race she would never forget. Matilde let out a satisfied sigh, enjoying the sensation of the waves washing over her.
Andrea's patience wore thin as he watched Charles' lack of focus. With a sigh, he tossed a ball towards Charles, aiming it directly at his head. The ball made contact, snapping Charles out of his reverie.
"Ouch!"
Andrea crossed his arms, his annoyance was evident. "Maybe if you paid as much attention to your training as you do to whatever is distracting you, you would have caught that ball."
Charles muttered an apology, forcing himself to re-engage in the workout. But his eyes kept on wandering towards Matilde, who was now walking out of the sea, droplets of water clinging to her skin. His heart raced as he tried to regain his focus, but it was a tough battle.
Finally, Matilde saw Charles looking in her direction, and a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. She had to pass him to go back to her sunbed. "Ah, lovely to train outside instead of the gym," she commented, her tone light and warm.
"Yes, quite the change of scenery," he replied curtly, his gaze flickering away. The response was colder than they both expected it to be.
Matilde squeezed her eyebrows together, sensing the change in his attitude. She was taken aback by his abruptness, but before she could reply to him, Charles turned his attention back to his workout. Matilde walked away, shook her head and walked back to her sunbed, following Liza.
As the workout processed, Charles pushed himself through the rest of his training, determined to shake off his distraction. But the memory of Matilde walking out of the sea, water glistening on her skin, lingered in his mind, igniting a spark of attraction that he couldn't ignore.

plz save us from the insanity in hetalia nordic tags do u have any soft hcs about den and swe
(You okay, anon?). Well, uh, sure? Here's some soft headcanons. 💝
.
"Bother my bother." / "Don't you mean Brother?" / "Did I stutter?" 😂 xD
In many ways they're two sides of a coin, and despite plenty of fights and bickering throughout the years they still love each other and always want the best for the other. (Though they sometimes disagree WHAT is the best for the other).
Depending on the situation Denmark and Sweden are either at their most powerful when they team up, or at their most ridiculous, or: "Holy shit someone get Norway to reel them in". 😂 xD
Denmark is an iconic ADHD-person.
Sweden is Autism icon.
Throughout history they've had their ups and downs, but in the end of the day they're still family. (Though some years it sat long back in their souls to admit it).
Closer to modern days when Sweden first announced he (Swe) had become a dad, Denmark at first thought he was joking. (Mostly shock tbh. Nations being able to become parents is RARE, after all). It took Denmark a few moments to realize Sweden was serious and that Denmark was now an uncle. 💖xD
And look, Denmark absolutely love the kids and his life as an uncle. 💖
Ladonia, being the kid who looked newborn when he "popped up" and so very slowly grew up, got SO MUCH DUPLO from Denmark. 😂 It was later switched over to Lego once they were sure Ladonia was old enough to not try and eat the pieces. x'D
Sealand, the part-time son of Sweden, took longer to warm up to lego, but he eventually fell in love with it as well. 💖
Ladonia eventually grew out of building with lego. His dear dad and uncle did not. 😂 Denmark and Sweden still have the time of their life building gigantic master-pieces with the lego together.
Denmark and Sweden once went missing for a week to their governments' distress. By the time they were found they had built an entire real-sized house with a mix of Duplo and Lego. It had running water and electricity. 😂 No one is quite sure how they did it, but for legal reasons Norway was forced to teleport the (literal) lego house into another dimension where it now serves as a home for some of Norway's fae friends. 😂💖 xD
.
Sweden has always been the (much) better medic of the two, but Sweden appreciates when Denmark still (tries to) neatly bandages Sweden's wounds.
They have both seen the other at their lowest and highest point(s). At this point there's nothing one could do to get rid of the other. 💖
When Sweden first fell in love Denmark teased Sweden merciless about it, but never spilled the beans and actually (tried to) be a good wingman. (With... Uh... Various success). 😂
Sweden is biding his time in hopes he will be able to soon return the favour, x1000. 😂 xD
Both of them hold multiple university AND job degrees at this point and are both very smart and creative on their own, but somehow their braincells usually come close to zero when they're together. And sometimes they come up something so brilliant it somehow does a loop around to become stupid again. 😂
Denmark once forgot his keys home, upon which he and Sweden proceeded to build an advanced "unlock door machine". It took them several hours. It (technically) worked! But uh... Then they realized the door had always been unlocked. The keys laid inside in the the little bowl for keys. 😂xD
Sweden is usually the first one Denmark will ask for advice. Denmark is usually the first one Sweden will ask for advice. Norway is the one they'll ask afterwards for advice which has a chance to work. 😂 xD
.
[This ask was kind of sudden, so I didn't really have anything prepared. Hope this works though, anon]. 💝 [With that said I should probably go check the tags now]. x'D

cw: major shibuya arc spoiler / jjk s2 spoiler. nanami kento angst drabble. first time writing, and it's not checked. my interpretation might be wrong, so sorry if it's ooc or not align with the anime!
i was rewatching the hidden inventory arc when i realized something.
not "realized", actually, more like i remembered something. a teeny tiny detail of the jjk universe.
i've just remembered that all of the characters actually has parents (lol yea i know silly me i just remembered it after i reach that part where geto apparently slaughtered his parents)
but... then i was thinking. about nanami.
his maternal grandfather is danish, yes? now imagine this:
ever since nanami kento reaches his teenager years and got enrolled in jujutsu tech which makes him technically a sorcerer, his family especially his mother has already make plans to relocate them back to denmark. for a... better, and peaceful life, she says.
a life far from the dangers of curses lurking on nanami, and a life far from the constant fear that one day, nanami won't go back in one piece.
just a life where he can be... normal. a normal teenager, doing normal things like what teenage boys usually do. maybe he could have a silly crush, or perhaps he can experience having a girlfriend... maybe even take the girl he has interest at to the prom. having difficulties with his homeworks and exams, being confused as heck choosing what major will he take for college...
well, the last possibility might not count. he's still confused when he wants to continue his uni life when he's in jujutsu tech. but then, at that point, he already has so many worries and traumas other than what major he should choose. worries and trauma that no teenager should be experiencing.
...or maybe, just maybe, nanami can experience a more normal future, too. perhaps nanami can land on a normal occupation in a corporate and climb on the ranks, or he can even make a bakery, since he loves to eat and bake various baked goods (especially breads). get married with the woman he loves, have children. he wouldn't have to worry much about curses in denmark just like he did now in japan, right?
but it seems that nanami is not that willing to leave jujutsu tech and the sorcery world behind.
from every argument that raises whenever she asks nanami about to possibility to move to denmark, his mother realizes something about nanami's understanding towards sorcery and his life:
he sees sorcery as something that... isn't ideal, for sure, but like it or not he must compromise with it if he still wants to live his life fully.
it's like what some people say about having exceptional intelligence or much higher sensitivity towards emotion: it could be a blessing for some, but curse for another. only those who have it could fully understand about it and... only they could bear with such "burden". they can't really ask everyone to understand and bear it...
and with that, his parents just.. dropped the idea of going back to denmark.
like it or not, it's still nanami's life. he has every right to choose what he wants.
his parents can only hope and pray that whenever the doorbell rings, it's nanami that's ringing it, alive, well, and breathing, and not some bunch of people who wore that distinct dark uniforms with such gloomy face... itching to break the bad news.
so just imagine how his parents would be so, so devastated when they heard that nanami has met his end during the shibuya mission.
his deceased body- god, they can't even call it a body... all that remains were just the lower part of his body they can't even lift the white sheet and take a proper look at it-
...if only he did agree to move to denmark, lay low and continue his life... in a more normal manner.

Testing a New Solar Sandwich
By combining the world’s oldest photovoltaic material with today’s most used one, researchers have taken a step toward next-generation solar devices. [...] Thanks to their reliability and cost, silicon-based devices have dominated the commercial solar-panel market for 50 years. But the sunlight–electricity conversion efficiencies of these devices are now nearing their theoretical limits. One challenging but promising way to increase this efficiency is to make solar cells from multiple materials with different photon-absorption properties, which would allow them to absorb more sunlight. Rasmus Nielsen of the Technical University of Denmark and his colleagues have done just that, demonstrating a solar cell that combines silicon with selenium, the first photovoltaic material to be discovered [1]. The researchers say that with updates, the performance of their selenium/silicon device could soon rival today’s best silicon cells.

https://theathletic.com/5469108/2024/05/07/premier-league-managers-touchline-fashion/?source=user_shared_article What are Premier League managers wearing on the touchline?
@doublefrogs @laisy @howeaythelads
Article text under the cut!
“Look smart, play smart”, as the saying goes. Perhaps it is about time we coined the phrase, “Look smart, manage smart” — and the meaning of “smart” is very much in the eye of the beholder.
In his first full season in charge — and despite two separate points deductions — Sean Dyche has steered Everton clear of relegation danger in the Premier League.
And what does Dyche credit as his secret weapon? Ditching wearing a traditional suit and tie for a club tracksuit, of course.
We’re not here to debate whether football managers donning classy business suits or comfortable matching sets of sportswear is superior. Instead, this feels like the perfect time to dive into what the Premier League’s movers and shakers are wearing on the touchline.
Want to imitate the Dyche look? (He’s cool enough to appear in music videos, remember.) The Athletic’s writers have got you covered.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal
On matchdays, Arteta tends to dress in monotone — shades of black and grey. He frequently sports black shoes, grey trousers and one from a variety of black jackets. Black conveys seriousness and credibility — perfect for a manager striving to achieve his first Premier League title.
“At a high-performance level, you have to be consistent, things are demanding, you want to be detailed and precise,” Arteta told The Telegraph last year. “But at the same time, you need to leave some room for creativity.”
In those nervous moments of stoppage time, he occasionally glances down at a Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. The watch dates from 2007 — the year Arteta was voted Everton’s player of the year after leading them to European football.
Perhaps Arteta should consider introducing some camouflage to his match attire: it might enable him to evade referees when escaping out of his technical area.
Unai Emery, Aston Villa
Suave, sophisticated and all about the football. Emery’s fashion is largely dictated by the environment and the conditions he goes to battle in. At Turf Moor, for example, he broke out the rarely worn club tracksuit. When facing the managers he considers to be the best in the world, he wears sharp polished shoes and a long coat.
After an international break or in the summer, he has olive skin and a fresh new haircut. In the winter, he has a claret scarf, Roberto Mancini-like, tucked into a black puffer jacket and almost always accompanied by slim-fit trousers and a V-neck jumper underneath.
Nothing over the top, but adaptable. Best of all, it reflects him: highly effective in all conditions.
Andoni Iraola, Bournemouth
Iraola has delivered a penchant for those ‘pundit trainers’ — you know, the black shoes with the white rim around them. It forms a part of his smart but casual look, like a trendy university teacher who wears a blazer when walking between classrooms. He wears tracksuits at press conferences but invariably a neat black jumper with a button-up shirt underneath, with the collars tucked over.
He’s also adaptable, like his Spanish countryman Emery — and at Villa Park, Iraola broke out a neat blue jacket, adding a dash of pizzazz to the usual black trousers and pundit trainers. Not quite Scott Parker, but Iraola is learning.
Thomas Frank, Brentford
When Frank stepped up from his role as Dean Smith’s assistant to become Brentford’s head coach in October 2018, he took his promotion seriously.
Frank prowled around on the touchline in suits, crossing his arms when he was frustrated and looking like a teacher — which he used to be back in Denmark.
He quickly ditched the suits for something more comfortable and in the 2021 Championship play-off final, one of the biggest moments in Brentford’s history, he rocked up in a simple long-sleeved green T-shirt and dark trousers.
Nowadays, he jumps between wearing club-branded coats in chilly weather or plain black hoodies — comfort over style. On special occasions, The Athletic has spotted him in a blue-and-white pair of Nike Air Max.
Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton & Hove Albion
De Zerbi’s dress code has been more consistent than his team this season. Rain or shine, warm or cold, Brighton’s head coach brings Italian suave to the touchline with his matchday outfit.
It can be a hooded jacket, a round-neck jumper with the sleeves rolled up, or a T-shirt, depending on the vagaries of the English weather, but the colour scheme is always the same — black with tight-fitting black slacks and white trainers.
Vincent Kompany, Burnley
Kompany claims he pays no thought to his touchline attire in the build-up to games, although it is difficult to truly believe him as he marches to the dugout looking more stylish than most.
First impressions count, so when his side faced Huddersfield Town in his first game in charge back in July 2022, he donned a white shirt, black blazer — and, surprisingly, no cap.
Kompany’s cap has become the new iconic trend in Burnley. There is genuine shock when he appears without it on the touchline or when conducting media duties. The cap is an extension of him.
The classic Kompany look usually involves a variation of a big black coat and his unmissable white shoes. However, in the warmer months, underneath, the T-shirt and blazer combination returns — and this time with a cap on his head. Occasionally, the club’s training gear may be chosen. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but the Burnley manager pulls it off.
Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea
No one can accuse Mauricio Pochettino of not trying to find the right outfit to bring about better results at Chelsea.
As far as head coaches and looking smart go, Jose Mourinho set the benchmark for all to follow in his two spells between 2004 and 2007, and 2013 and 2015. It is a bit like his silverware collection while at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino has gone for the smart, suited look on occasion, although, like his mood after another poor result, the colours are always very dark. There has even been the odd tie attached.
Then, there is the training kit. Perhaps Pochettino dons it so regularly to boost sales in the club shop. Chelsea do have to find all the ways possible to meet profit and sustainability rules, after all.
He appears to quite like a football drill top, which has white down the arms — a rare bit of brightness in his Chelsea life.
Oliver Glasner, Crystal Palace
Last year, Crystal Palace appointed Kenny Annan-Jonathan as the first creative director for a Premier League club, but Oliver Glasner probably doesn’t need any fashion tips.
Glasner’s matchday attire is simple and understated. A trademark Canada Goose jacket with a black jumper and black jeans, coupled with a pair of white Nike Air Max Plus (better known as Air Max TNs).
It contrasts markedly with the garish orange-and-black Macron kit that is usually donned at the training ground.
The 49-year-old has attracted attention for his change in playing style at Palace, but his fashion style is also a complete departure from previous manager Roy Hodgson and the iconic shorts worn by former assistant Ray Lewington, no matter the weather.
Sean Dyche, Everton
Dyche has said his mother “isn’t too happy about it”, but the emperor has new clothes and Everton are winning points.
Dyche has always managed in a suit — nothing spectacular, no subterranean polo necks, no avant-garde lapels — but Everton’s form was nose-diving. They were winless in 13 league matches, plummeting back towards the relegation zone, and Dyche’s man-management seemed to be losing its touch.
Reaching deep into his box of motivational tricks (or by listening to Michael Jackson), he began, suitably, with the man in the mirror, switching to a tracksuit for Everton’s must-win showdown with Nottingham Forest on April 21.
“I always thought it was correct to wear a shirt and tie, but I just thought I’d play my part in what I was looking for from my players and staff,” he said post-match.
Since then? Four games, no defeats, and Everton’s first derby win at Goodison Park since 2010. It has been the best week for shell suits since the 1980s.
Will he continue? “I have to,” he said last week, with the air of an ageing steel magnate on dress-down Friday. “I have no choice.”
Marco Silva, Fulham
Fashion seems to be important these days at Fulham. It is ‘on brand’ to look upmarket and stylish.
The club have leant into that affluent stereotype: just look at the sales of cheese boards in the club shop (purchased by fans for away days with more than a hint of irony, obviously). They have also established a partnership with male fashion brand Charles Tyrwhitt, which has a line called the ‘Fulham Look’. Marco Silva is not one of the models for that collection, but managers do need to look the part in south-west London.
His predecessor, Scott Parker, was never one to shy away from eye-catching knitwear. Silva is more low-key. He is a man of darker tones and a sharp and simple look, suggesting a seriousness that reflects his character.
He mainly wears black jumpers, sometimes opting for a turtleneck or a grey option, and often a big black coat in the rain and cold. Smart black shoes go with that, but he can and does switch to trainers and training gear. A smart or stylish watch is a must, though.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool
For Klopp’s farewell season at Liverpool, it’s been the trusted casual tracksuit attire we’ve become accustomed to seeing over his nine years in the Premier League.
At the start of the season, for the opener away at Chelsea, it was just a black Liverpool T-shirt with club tracksuit bottoms, a baseball cap and white Adidas trainers, the brand with which he became a brand ambassador in 2020.
As the weather turned, Klopp paired the above combination with a red-and-grey hoodie and had either a tracksuit top or a long raincoat over the top for the winter months. He’s sometimes added a snood for the really chilly games.
He has kept the club Nike baseball cap on all season — with his choice of colour the main fashion change-up.
In an interview with the Guardian in 2020, Klopp explained why he’s always kept it casual. He said: “I was a player and the next day I was the manager (of Mainz).
“In my locker room was the tracksuit of the guy who had the job two days before. It didn’t even fit me. I was just focused on the game. I never thought about how I looked. I know it’s not too cool because we are working in public, but then when I came to Borussia Dortmund, I thought: ‘Maybe I have to change’. I went for a while wearing jeans and a shirt but I just didn’t feel comfortable.”
Rob Edwards, Luton Town
Who remembers the Next catalogue? Every matchday, it looks like Rob Edwards has walked right out of it.
Edwards has the three-quarter zip jumper look locked down. His Luton team are in the relegation zone with two games to go, but he is top of the league when it comes to best-dressed managers.
Are you even a football manager if, when you open your wardrobe, you aren’t suddenly drowning in Sandbanks coats? Edwards certainly enjoys repping the brand, which has Jamie Redknapp as its ambassador, and he does so with style.
Edwards’ recent look for Luton’s away trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers was his best of the season. He wore something similar on a scouting trip to Molineux a few days earlier but rounded off the fit with a pair of clear-frame glasses. When it comes to manager fashion, he is clear.
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City
At the Etihad Stadium, high-end fashion and high-end football collide.
Guardiola has long been one of the most fashionable managers out there and his sensibilities have matured over the years to a point of pristine quiet luxury.
Gone are the ice-white trainers of old, replaced by chunky black derby shoes. Gone, too, is the bulky grey coat-cardigan hybrid, made by Italian brand Herno, that became his calling card a few seasons ago — although Guardiola is still partial to the odd piece of cosy, statement knitwear.
Once keen on Stone Island — although he sometimes removed the brand’s signature arm tag — the Manchester City manager is now more likely to be seen sporting CP Company, which is handy given the Italian luxury brand is set to become his club’s official Champions League clothing partner next season, replacing Dsquared2.
Erik ten Hag, Manchester United
Every Manchester United manager needs a big coat for when it rains at Old Trafford. This season has seen Ten Hag wearing a raincoat from Norwegian brand UBR. He appears to be a fan of UBR’s black Storm jacket, which retails at around €800 (£690; $860).
On matchdays when it isn’t raining, the Dutchman is fond of a black blazer from Spanish clothing company Adolfo Dominguez, pricing at around €300.
Recent weeks have seen him opt for a Paul Smith suit and cardigan combination — the English designer has been a club partner since 2008.
Despite these big names, you would be unlikely to say Ten Hag is a fan of luxury and designer clothing. The more sartorially minded might have spotted his suits had an off-the-rack look and seemed boxy around his lean shoulders. Ten Hag is most at home in a tracksuit but can dress up when the occasion calls for it.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle United
The most important factor in determining Howe’s pre-match attire? Well, that would be whatever Jason ‘Mad Dog’ Tindall, his Rottweiler-esque assistant coach, is wearing.
The Premier League has introduced a technical-area rule in an attempt to break up the perpetual Howe-Tindall pitchside axis, but to little avail.
They remain a tenacious touchline act, apparently attached at the hip and yet wearing suitably discernible outfits. If Tindall has gone for the black with green logo, then Howe will inevitably select the black with yellow logo. If their colour theme is consistent, one will opt for a hoodie and the other for a zippy top. Why they always dress differently, nobody seems to know.
And by outfits, we mean tracksuits, hoodies and training T-shirts. There is never a suit in sight unless there is respect to be paid to a deceased monarch pre-match, in which case it is hastily whipped off in the tunnel before kick-off anyway and the slack pants are restored. Comfort is essential when watching this Newcastle side, after all.
Nuno Espirito Santo, Nottingham Forest
Since his unveiling at the City Ground, Nuno has been unwaveringly consistent in his attire.
Blue Adidas tracksuit bottoms, blue Adidas training top or hoodie and, if it is cold, a blue Adidas puffer jacket. Nuno has, on occasion, gone crazy and gone for white Adidas trainers, but normally (you’ve guessed it) they are also blue.
As a head coach, Nuno is fiercely practical. He does not want to waste time with the peripheral duties of his job. He only wants to work with his players on the training ground. Anything else is a distraction. You suspect his choice of clothes represents function over form.
Chris Wilder, Sheffield United
During his first spell in charge at Bramall Lane, Wilder’s sartorial look was the very antithesis of his team. Where United played an innovative system featuring overlapping centre-backs that left the opposition unable to predict just where the next attack would be coming from, he stuck doggedly to sporting a gilet. Come rain, hail or shine, the ubiquitous garment was there.
So, when his second coming in the United dugout last December saw the 56-year-old sport a rather smart winter coat, suit pants and shoes so shiny the suspicion was he had been up all night polishing them, it didn’t quite feel right.
Thankfully, in time, the gilet returned, along with an array of club-branded sportswear to restore a degree of reassuring familiarity.
Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur
Postecoglou began his time in north London by wearing a casual polo shirt. However, as summer gave way to autumn, he started to wear warmer clothes and settled on a suit and tie combination. Initially, this felt a little unnatural, but everyone has gradually grown used to it.
Postecoglou occasionally pairs the suit with trainers or the footwear known universally as ‘pundit shoes’, but generally, he wears smart black ones and has switched between a smarter coat and an official club sporty number.
The overall impression is of a man giving the minimum of fuss. It’s just who we are, mate.
David Moyes, West Ham United
Since returning to the helm in December 2019, Moyes has kept his choice of clothing on matchdays simple and traditional.
He often wears a dark grey West Ham-branded Umbro tracksuit, with Umbro trainers.
Sometimes, the occasion calls for a plain, dark jumper, but also, sometimes Moyes will wear a suit, pairing a powder blue shirt with a claret tie to leave few doubts over the club he’s managing.
There are a few quirks when it comes to the clothing chosen by one of the Premier League’s most experienced managers.
Gary O’Neil, Wolverhampton Wanderers
Let’s be honest, there was not much about Wolves last season that was interesting, but Julen Lopetegui’s fashion choices certainly added a bit of intrigue.
Of the 26 matches he spent on the touchline as Wolves boss — he was banished to the stands for his final game in charge at Arsenal — the Spaniard managed an exact split, 13 games each, between a tracksuit and stylish chinos-sweater combo.
Yet the success rate in chinos (seven wins, three draws and three defeats) was so much better than in his tracksuit (three wins, two draws and eight defeats). It is remarkable he did not have a ceremonial burning of the sportswear.
In comparison, his successor, O’Neil, has been boringly predictable in his black hoodie, black trousers, black trainers and occasional black anorak.
But then, the football this season has been watchable, so swings and roundabouts…

First metal part 3D printed in space
ESA's Metal 3D Printer has produced the first metal part ever created in space.
The technology demonstrator, built by Airbus and its partners, was launched to the International Space Station at the start of this year, where ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen installed the payload in the European Drawer Rack of ESA's Columbus module. In August, the printer successfully printed the first 3D metal shape in space.
This product, along with three others planned during the rest of the experiment, will return to Earth for quality analysis: two of the samples will go to ESA's technical heart in the Netherlands (ESTEC), another will go to ESA's astronaut training center in Cologne (EAC) for use in the LUNA facility, and the fourth will go to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
As exploration of the moon and Mars will increase mission duration and distance from Earth, resupplying spacecraft will be more challenging. Additive manufacturing in space will give autonomy for the mission and its crew, providing a solution to manufacture needed parts, to repair equipment or construct dedicated tools, on demand during the mission, rather than relying on resupplies and redundancies.
ESA's technology demonstrator is the first to successfully print a metal component in microgravity conditions. In the past, the International Space Station has hosted plastic 3D printers.

"Magnetic levitation is already employed in systems such as Maglev trains, flywheels and high-speed machinery. Now researchers at the Technical University of Denmark have given this old technology a fresh twist by explaining how a magnet can be levitated simply by rotating another magnet of a similar size near it. This unusual effect was first demonstrated by an electronics/computer and software engineer, Hamdi Ucar, in 2021, and the TU-Denmark team say it could be exploited in the contactless handling of objects or used to trap and manipulate ferromagnetic microparticles.
There are three main types of magnetic levitation. In the first, known as active magnetic stabilization, a control system supplies the magnetic force required keep the levitating object balanced. The second, termed electrodynamic suspension, is used in Maglev trains. Here, a moving magnet induces a current in a stationary conductor, producing a repulsive force that increases with the speed of the moving magnet. The last category, called spin-stabilized levitation, features a levitating magnet that spins at around 500 revolutions per minute (rpm) and remains stable thanks to the gyroscopic effect.
The new type of levitation involves two magnets. The first, dubbed the “rotor”, is mounted on a motor with its north and south poles oriented perpendicular to its rotation axis and made to rotate at velocities of around 10 000 rpm. In the TU-Denmark team’s experiments, this magnet was spherical, 19 mm in diameter and made from neodymium-iron-boron.
The second magnet – the “floater” – is placed near the rotor, begins to spin automatically, and then moves towards the rotor until it hovers in space a few centimetres below it. The floater precesses with the same frequency as the rotor and its magnetization is oriented close to the axis of rotation and towards the like pole of the rotor magnet. If disturbed, a restoring force moves it back to its equilibrium position.
“It is quite surprising that magnetic levitation develops in such as relatively simple system,” says Rasmus Bjørk, a physicist at TU-Denmark who led the study together with Frederik Laust Durhuus and Joachim Marco Hermansen."
"“It is intuitive to all that the magnetostatic force that one magnet exerts on another can be both attractive and repulsive,” explains Durhuus. “Without rotation, the free magnet will rotate so the force becomes purely attractive and then the magnets will collide into each other. What makes the new magnetic levitation system so special is that the rotation itself allows the floater to remain in a counterintuitive configuration, nearly perpendicular to the rotor’s field, where the magnetostatic force both attracts and repels it.”

Trains in Wednesday
If you watched Wednesday (2022 Netflix TV show), then you've probably wondered what the train was, and whether it makes sense. The answer to that is: Sorta, by accident!
Tumblr media
We see the train briefly in establishing shots in a number of episodes, but especially episode two, where it pulls into the station. The station is full of American flags everywhere, and the show is set in America, so as you'd expect, the station and train are from…
…Romania, actually. Not quite Transylvania, but close (at least the castle, I don't actually know about the station). This train is a CFR class 96 DMU (diesel multiple unit).
Tumblr media

To much the rest of the world, this type of train is known as a Siemens Desiro. Specifically it is nowadays known as a Siemens Desiro Classic. There are plenty of other trains named Siemens Desiro, generally with a suffix, that are technically and visually completely different (e.g. the ones for the UK, Russia, Belgium, the newer ones for Germany and Israel, the one for Malaysia… all completely different trains).
The Desiro Classic was designed to offer better service on rural German branch lines, with high acceleration, level boarding, air conditioning and accessibility. Several other companies built similar trains during the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of a big program to modernise Germany's regional rail lines, and all of them managed to sell theirs far and wide beyond Germany as well. Siemens in particular managed to get a good foothold on south-east Europe. They sold significant numbers of these trains to Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece, as well as Denmark in a different direction. Most were diesel, but some electric versions also exist. Romania in particular got 120 trains (all diesel), about half of which were produced locally, which makes them the second-biggest user of this type after Germany.
As a train designed to continental European standards, it does not meet US-american crash worthiness requirements, which are all designed around "the heavier the train the better", and have largely ignored "built stuff in to avoid collisions". As a result it can't run on the US mainline rail network. And so you'd expect me to say that this makes no sense in the US, and I'd really like to…
…but as it turns out, for almost any early-2000s low floor German DMU, you can find like one or two lines in the US were these were used as a super innovative regional rail project. For the Desiro, that place was North San Diego County, California, where twelve of these trains run under the name "Sprinter" between places I never heard of (Oceanside and Escondido) in the greater LA metro area.
Tumblr media

Different colors, obviously, and I think it got more AC units on the roof, but it's still the same train. The lower crash standards means that it's considered "light rail" in the US, meaning it legally counts as a better type of tram, and freight trains can't run when these trains are running.
Twelve of these trains isn't a lot, but it's still more than the three Bombardier Talent DMUs (a similar type by a different company) that used to run in Ontario, and that people always bring up whenever I talked about a Bombardier Talent somewhere.
Wednesday is set in Vermont, obviously, far from California. But Nevermore and the town of Jericho are clearly fictional, and it's absolutely possible that in the alternate universe of the show, there is a branch line in Vermont that got these trains in the mid-2000s. It's a bit of a stretch if you get down to it, e.g. with the Romanian colours (and for that matter why is the station electrified? Is Jericho a junction on a branch of the North-East Corridor?). But it's way more plausible then the show's love triangle.

Universally Monstrous - The Mummy
Today we’re looking at the Mummy... sort of.  Technically it’s not The Mummy, it’s a mummy.
So here’s another one:
On Ao3 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/21127292
and below the ‘Keep Reading’ for the linkphobic
 Universally Monstrous - The Mummy
“I must admit I’m surprised you managed to secure authorization for me to see the mummy.”  Sherlock sounded rather impressed by her accomplishment.
The discovery of a bog mummy was a rare occurrence.  To be given the opportunity to observe one that had just been excavated had been too good for Sherlock to refuse.  When Molly had called with the news that the small hospital where her grandmother was recovering would be playing host to such a specimen, he’d bought a ticket to Denmark and flown out that very night.
“Technically, I haven’t,” Molly hissed.  “Neither of us is supposed to be here; so I would appreciate it if you stopped talking about it in the hall where anyone could overhear you.”
Sherlock stopped moving and grinned.  “Just when I think I can’t be any more attracted to you than I already am…  God, I can’t wait to get you back to the hotel.”
Molly rolled her eyes.  “Yeah, I know.  Breaking the law always gets you hot and bothered.”
“Blatantly untrue.”  He reached out and grabbed her hips, pulling her up against his chest.  “I only react this way when I’m bending the law with you, Mrs Holmes.”  He stressed the word bending, as if it would make a difference to the police should they get caught.  Sherlock leaned down a pressed a kiss to the skin just below her ear.
“I’m sure John would be relieved to hear that,” Molly teased.
He gently pushed her away with a grumbled, “And the moment is ruined.”  He gestured for her to continue walking.  “If we don’t have permission to see this thing, how are you planning to get us in?”
“I used to visit Nana for a few weeks every summer, and one of my good friends from back then is an orderly here.  He’s actually the one who let me know the mummy was being stored here for a few days until the museum could send a crew for it.”  She took a moment glance at the directional signs on the wall and then lead him down another hall.   Molly lowered her voice to a near whisper.  “Jarrod said he’s pretty sure he can get us ten minutes to look at it.  But absolutely no touching.”
“What about-“ Sherlock began.
“No.  No touching.”
He huffed like a spoiled child who had been denied a sweetie.  Then his expression grew hard and he reached out to grab her wrist.  “Stay here.”
Molly froze in place.  “What is it?”  She tried to identify whatever it was that had triggered his switch to Detective Mode.
Then she saw it.
The only door on the right side of the hall was slightly ajar.   Almost, but not quite, flush with the frame.  As if something had kept it from closing all the way when it swung shut.
Once she’d noted that, it was easy to detect the sparse trail of something dark that lead from (or to) the door, down the hall to the T at the end, and veered left.
“Stay here,” Sherlock repeated as he began to cautiously move toward the door and whatever was splattered across the floor.
Molly didn’t bother replying, she simply ignored his words and followed closely behind.
Sherlock silently urged the door open just far enough that he could peer inside the room, and then pulled it the rest of the way open to allow Molly to see.  “Is that your friend?”
She gasped and rushed forward, dropping to her knees next to the still body sprawled out on the floor next to an overturned exam table and a puddle of more of that dark slimy stuff.  “Jarrod!”  Molly felt for his pulse and immediately sighed with relief.  “He’s alive.”  She quickly bent over to examine him, looking for signs of life-threatening trauma.  “Just dazed.”
Sherlock bent to examine the puddle of goo and the trail that joined up with the one they’d spotted in the hall.  “Do you smell that?   Rotting vegetation.”  He dipped his finger into the mess and brought it to the tip of his tongue.  He smacked his lips and grimaced.  “What is that taste?”
“It smells like peat, and you’re an idiot.  Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to lick stuff you find on the floor?”  Jarrod groaned as he allowed Molly to help him sit up.  “What happened?”
Rather than reacting to the insult, Sherlock stood up and moved to the doorway to study the mess in the hall.
“It looks like you got hit pretty hard.”  Molly delicately sifted her fingers through his hair.  “You’ve already got a bruise forming on your forehead and a bit of a lump back here.  You’re going to need to see a doctor just to be sure there’s nothing worse going on.”
Jarrod nodded and grimaced, then finally seemed to realize what was missing from the room.  “Someone ran off with the mummy!”
Sherlock shook his head.  “Close, but judging from these tracks it would seem that your mummy ran off on his own.  Or stumbled off more precisely.”
“That’s-that is not possible.”  Molly looked toward Jarrod for confirmation.  “Right?”
“Of course not.  He’s been dead for… a really, really long time.  Dead people don’t just get up and wander off,” Jarrod agreed.
Sherlock looked as if he were planning to argue, but his attention jerked toward the T junction at the end of the hall.  “Up.  Stand up.   Molly, help me get him off the floor.  We need to go, right now.”
“What-“  Her eyes widened as she heard it too.  Something was out there.  Something that made a wet, squishy, slurping sound as it slowly moved closer.  “Time to go, definitely time to go.”
She let Sherlock take the majority of Jarrod’s weight as they pulled her friend to his feet, then slid his arm over her shoulder to help steer him out of the room.
The wet shuffling was getting louder, and Molly knew it was only a matter of moments before whatever it was stepped into view at the end of the hall.

1.8Pbps: Boffins smash data transmission record • The Register
One laser + one optical chip = more than the traffic of the entire internet
European scientists claim to have achieved a data transmission speed of 1.8 petabits per second, all with a single laser and an optical chip.
For those unsure, 1.8Pbit/s is a lot. As in, more than the total volume of global internet traffic sent every second, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) said in a statement.
The team credits the characteristics of the frequency comb generated on its chip for the breakthrough, even though it wasn't designed for the purpose.
This is not the first time a frequency comb has been used to help improve the transmission of optical information across a fiber. A group of researchers from the University of California, San Diego, set an especially lengthy record for data transmission in 2015, using the technique to avoid distortion.  ...
