Hey Kat, curious if you know how cancer treatment is handled in Denmark?
I live in the US and when a relative was diagnosed with cancer, they paid a lot of money for the surgery (to remove the cancerous tissues) and for their chemotherapy. They had really good health insurance but I believe they had to pay 20% of the medical cost (it was thousands of dollars).
And then....I found out that I need to go in for cancer screenings ever couple of years due to my close relation to my family member (I have a heightened risk of getting this cancer so doctor reccs I do screenings every few years). I'm lucky that my insurance covers 100% of preventative screenings/operations, but not all US insurance companies cover that.
Would be interested how Denmark treats cancer patients/preventative procedures/care, if possible. If not, that's fine too. Just am curious because it's wild to hear how different healthcares are done (I'm really jealous of Japan's dental care, for example)
Cancer treatment is the crown jewel of our universal health care system, and as far as I know it is fully covered. We have a full independent system in place JUST for cancer treatment to effectualize that cornerstone of health care significantly, and free screenings are also offered, especially if particularly relevant. Once they suspect cancer they will place you in the cancer section of the system, and fast track you through that as effectively as possible until cancer is hopefully excluded. Both testing, chemo and surgery is completely free. My sister had a cancer scare at a point and recently one of my parents friends got diagnosed, and both times the system worked FAST from the moment they suspected cancer. So I genuinely think our cancer care is especially effective, even with the occasional issue

Research | Optimised City Infrastructure
Tumblr media
Singapore
Whilst the greater world of my final film would take place in a Solarpunk Sri Lanka, I am mainly focusing on the city of Colombo. In order to create an "idealised" version of the city, I decided to look into the countries with the most optimised city infrastructure. As a metric, I will be using the Human Development Index and the Gallup World Happiness Report to make certain assertions on each of these countries.
United Nations' Human Development Report 2021/22
Tumblr media
The HDI is the most comprehensive and practical analysis of each country's level of development and quality of life. The top 3 countries are immediately composed of Scandinavian countries, followed by Hong Kong, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. The list is ultimately mainly Euro-centric. Is this because of the idyllic lifestyle we associate with Europe? Or does it run deeper than that? Does development directly correlate to an optimal way of life, or is this term reserved for purely technological advancements over the years? To find out, we must also look at the other side of the coin; the happiest countries in the world.
World Happiness Report 2023
Tumblr media
Once again, the list is dominated by Scandinavian countries. This could lead to the conclusion that metrics of human development and happiness are not (at least, in some part) mutually exclusive.
One reason for this ranking is the high standard of living in these countries. While it's cost of living is high, these countries generally also share high wealth per person. Additionally, efficient healthcare and access to these features adds to the quality of life in these places. Particularly in Norway, where medical attention is delivered to all patients regardless of financial status. Norway frequently ranks as one of the world's most democratic countries and has one of the lowest crime rates of any nation.
A particularly notable country on this list is Denmark, which ranks high in social trust. In addition to free healthcare, education including university studies are completely free to all citizens. In fact, Denmark is likely one of the best models we have in terms of a Solarpunk society; the country is a global leader in shipping, architecture, and design, and contains one of the most ecologically friendly cities - Copenhagen - where bicycles are often preferred to using standard automobiles. If long distances need to be travelled, the efficiency of the public transport system fully supports its citizens.  Finally, the Danes have given the world the concept of "hygge",  a warmly human term for time spent away from the hustle and bustle, peacefully relaxing and appreciating life's smaller joys, often with family and/or friends. Sans the last point (as it would defeat the point of my story), these are some notes that I could take into account for my own world building.
In stark contrast Hong Kong is a major international financial centre with a surprisingly high quality of life (much like how I want to position my own version of Colombo in my film). In terms of the overall design of the city, it is a classic combination of East meets West, with colonial buildings, temples, and ancient festivals existing side-by-side with modern public transportation and glass skyscrapers. Drawing more parallels to the world of my imagining, Australia places great importance in the value of education, and particularly performing exceptionally (similar to my idea of a society that prioritises hard work). The average Australian attends school for twenty years, and many attend at least two years of undergraduate college. Additionally, education in Australia accounts for more than five percent of the country’s overall GDP.
Another ingredient in the recipe for solid infrastructure appears to be open-mindedness. In the case of the Netherlands, the country is a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and in 2001 became the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. Similarly, countries with laws that prioritise the wellbeing of the workforce tend to generally do well for themselves. As a result of most of this (particularly in the Scandinavian countries), there is a generally low rate of violent crime.
Tumblr media
Finland
So it seems in today's sense, what makes a country happy is generally based on the humanity of the laws, generally more accessible common systems such as public transport, health care and education, and a strong emphasis on renewable technology. In essence, these countries are some of the closest the world has gotten to a "Solarpunk" world.
A country that wasn't necessarily mentioned here, but is important nonetheless, is Singapore. Singapore is the largest port in South Asia and one of the busiest in the world. I find this interesting, as this honour was once bestowed on Trincomalee, on the Eastern side of Sri Lanka due to the geographical convenience of it. It would not be far fetched to assume that had this remained, our country would have been in a much better place today (unfortunately, certain trade laws in 1960 based on the Colonial model essentially wiped Sri Lanka off the map). One of the many changes made by the reigning government to the city was relocating commerce into their own districts and creating integrated residential communities of people with a mix of incomes, which greatly aided in commercial activity and building community respectively.
Singapore has the most advanced economy in Southeast Asia and is often mentioned along with other rapidly industrializing countries in Asia, notably South Korea and Taiwan. One thing that makes Singapore successful is that its economic growth is not dependent or just a result of the production and export of commodities, but a host of other factors, mainly the investment capital from other foreign multinational corporations. Additionally, the government has attempted to enhance the value and productivity of labour in order to attract investment and boost export competitiveness. In other words, they are a society that emphasise the value of hard work. This is supported by some of the aforementioned factors of a happy country, such as strong commitments towards education and healthcare.
In another parallel that can be made with Sri Lanka, tourism has become increasingly important to the economy of Singapore. Singapore’s central location in Southeast Asia and its excellent air-transport facilities have been augmented by massive investments in hotels and shopping centres. Duty-free shopping and a variety of recreational attractions, along with a refurbished beachfront, are among the primary attractions. In terms of transportation, the island has a network of well developed roads and highways and a seamless public transport system (the light-rail) which links the major population centres in the housing estates with employment centres and the central business district. Additionally, Changi airport is a major regional and international airhub.
As seen above, the success of Singapore is vastly different to the success of most of the countries covered in the HDI and World Happiness Report. These principles alone cannot contribute to the world I want to create for my film. Instead, a happy medium between some traits of the happiest countries and the most developed countries (and places like Singapore) would be the best course of action to creating the "idealised" version of Sri Lanka for my story.

Best country for PG after MBBS
It is the ambition of most medical graduates to migrate abroad after the completion of MBBS. They want to give the best future for their career.
In this article, I have tried to help medical graduates by finding one appropriate country that they can go to in order to give better education and expand their expertise.
Like every other profession, aspiring doctors also prefer global careers. As India has a huge shortage of doctors, many Indian doctors are attracted towards different countries with good preference for migrants like Ireland and UK. Ireland has an oversupply of doctors and is well known to appoint a foreign doctor on par with its patients' needs irrespective of the nationality or qualifications. The demand for PGDM abroad always exceeds supply in India which means that WHO trains about 3000 new graduate trainees annually but there are only around 12000 seats left in India (2018). Thus destinations like Bahrain, Libya, US and Australian states - NSW and WA come as preferred favourites among Indian Doctors
Tumblr media
There are various jobs to be done in various countries. In India, you can set up your practice. Closer to their roots and still keep it ensuring a good income. However, you'll have more limits when it comes to where you can work if you're from India due to licensing restrictions. A full-time work permit also needs three years of post-graduate medical experience with a medical license obtained in the same country before being eligible for permanent residency.
If we talk about Germany we won't face any red tape at all as practicing there does not require any specific doctors or residence permits permitting us practice there even though nission time is less than 18 months.
The German Medical Association has published a document, listing their top options for countries to train as physicians.
Best Country for PG after MBBS in India - Every year, thousands of India native graduates leave the country every year to study medicine abroad. Most young medical aspirants presume that it would be wiser for their career prospects and educational interests if they left the country but according to Indian joint entrance examinations (WJEC) latest research reports this is not so. Major Medical institutes in the USA mandate 12 months of internship but did not mention about continuing medical education (CME). Due to these limitations; therefore has manifested an increased interest among graduates from European nations because of postgraduate education.
Tumblr media
Medical residency in Germany is very competitive. To become a skilled healthcare professional, you should study at the most respected colleges in the world.
Applicants applying to the German Medical School must have excellent skills in various aspects, including mathematics and science, voluble English, German language competence and so on.
The quality of medical training is stringent and intense - it takes over 6 years. The benefits from residency include worldly experience in distinct cultures . A high quality of life combined with reduced prices of both goods and services that make the tiny net salary earned during residency not seem like a bad idea !
Germany offers free undergraduate education. It has strong university systems, such as the THA in Hamburg, “Technische Hochschule” with a lot of opportunities for international programmers.
Studying in Denmark offers the opportunity to take years ago one or two professional study tours and experience life among the people there for a few weeks at a time.
Studying in the Netherlands can enhance your cultural understanding through fun. There are excellent courses in media studies, art history and culture management programs, which gives you excellent transferability within Europe and beyond.

Danish pharmaceutical giant commits $200 million to the creation of the first quantum computer for life sciences
The pharmaceutical sector has long taken an interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and the potential applicability of these technologies to drug development.
However, the Danish multinational Novo Nordisk has signalled how serious it is in pursuing this avenue, by pledging $200 million towards the creation of a world-beating quantum computer.
What do we know so far about the project?
Launched in conjunction with the University of Copenhagen, the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme is set to make use of the knowhow of internationally renowned researchers from Denmark, the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. The aim is to build a quantum computer capable of accomplishing tasks that no other computer currently in existence can do.
The company wants to construct a machine that will perform calculations at a speed that even the most sophisticated computers presently available are unable to match.
As far as Novo Nordisk is concerned, such calculations would process immense quantities of data in relation to the human genome and disease, to enable personalised medicines to be developed faster.
When might we see Novo Nordisk’s supercomputer ‘in the flesh’?
The short answer to that question is: we’ve got at least years to wait. The company has admitted that “challenges persist in developing a fully scaled, fault-tolerant, generally applicable quantum computer.”
The collaboration is set to last for 12 years, and its first priority – accounting for the first seven years – is expected to be the development of the required hardware and materials. The remaining time will then see the chosen platform scaled up to a size that university and industry researchers can use.
As the company commented in a release on 21st September: “Quantum technologies will be key in the advent of personalised medicine by allowing the analysis of immense genomic data sets, as well as adding clarity to the complex interactions of the human microbiome or by accelerating drug discovery and development of new medicines.”
Technology that works towards safe medication practice
We are no stranger to calculations ourselves, of course – albeit of a different kind – with the safeMedicate suite of programs helping hundreds of thousands of nursing and healthcare practitioners in calculating drugs dosages in a variety of contexts.
Safe medication practice will always be of imperative importance in healthcare environments, and that is no less the case for drug calculations. Please feel free to contact our own team today for answers to any questions you may have about the relevance and applicability of safeMedicate to you.

Your healthcare isn't free you stupid fucking canuck! You pay for it with your taxes! We don't! 🇺🇸
I don't know why so many Americans throw this out there like it's some big secret we aren't aware of. We know it's funded by our taxes. When we say "free", we mean we don't have to worry about walking out of the hospital with a $900,000 bill after giving birth or paying $40 to hold our newborn after a c-section. It's "free" in the sense that anyone and everyone is entitled to good healthcare and can visit the hospital whenever they need to.
That said, I'm not going to pretend I know everything about American taxation, but I do know you pay for your healthcare via insurance. Meaning if someone doesn't have a good plan or make decent money, they're screwed. In Canada, that doesn't happen. For example, when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, he needed multiple treatments and surgeries for four long years. Want to know how much those treatments cost him? $0. The only thing any of us had to pay for was the $7 parking fee when we went to visit him at the hospital.
In contrast, I personally know Americans who have, sadly, had to file for bankruptcy because of their cancer treatments. I know an American construction worker who lost three of his fingers on a job, but because his insurance didn't cover the full cost of reattaching all of them, the doctors actually made him choose which one to save. Imagine having to do that. In the end, he chose to save his middle finger and lose his ring and pinky finger. I know an American who got stuck with a $50,000 hospital bill because he had a heart attack. I know Americans who have tried to ration their INSULIN because they were worried about their next payment.
I remember when this made the news, everyone was acting like it was "cute". It's not fucking cute, it's dystopian as hell! A seven-year-old American girl who needed brain surgery raised her own money and relied on donations because her mother's insurance didn't cover the cost. Are you insane? This isn't "cute". This shouldn't be celebrated. She shouldn't have had to worry about this. She is a child who was dying.
I also don't understand why so many Americans seem to think our taxes are astronomical, when in reality you actually pay more taxes than we do. From what I understand, the max tax in America is 37%. For us, the max is 33%. That max also only applies if you make over $200,000 a year. Most people pay between 15-20.5% in taxes. I certainly don't pay 33%. I don't know anybody who does. So you pay taxes plus insurance. Granted you can claim more at the end of the year, but honestly ... so? America spends more on healthcare as a share of the economy (nearly twice as much as the average OECD country) yet it has the lowest life expectancy and highest suicide rates among the eleven nations. You also have the highest chronic disease burden and an obesity rate that is two times higher than the OECD average. Thanks, but I don't mind claiming less on my taxes.
So now the argument is, "Why should I have to pay for someone else's healthcare?!" I hear this one a lot once we reach this point. Putting aside the fact that you can barely pay for your own, it's a benefit for the country as a whole. There's nothing wrong with being individualistic, but no country is truly individualistic. We all rely on each other to keep the country afloat. Not only that, but what's wrong with helping your fellow man? And if you really are that selfish, just remember that free healthcare benefits YOU as well. Like when my dad got cancer, like when my sister almost died from a childhood fever, like when I came out backwards and jaundiced when I was born and had to be incubated for several days. The money pooled from all of our taxes makes sure we're all taken care of.
The other argument I hear at this point is wait times. I admit that for a while I believed this one, but as it turns out American and Canadian wait times are almost exactly the same. The average ER wait time in America is anywhere from 40 minutes to 4 hours. In Canada, it's anywhere from one hour to 6 hours. Not that much of a discrepancy, and I've personally never had to wait anywhere near 6 hours. I think the most I ever waited was four hours when I dislocated my toe. As for the claim that Canadians run to America en masse for specialists? Well, that's quite simply a myth. While there are indeed some Canadians who do that, it's mostly the wealthy who feel justified in skipping the line. We also have those services here, where those who are better off can pay out of pocket for private healthcare.
Now to throw a big monkey wrench into the works, probably the most shocking statistic is that Americans actually flock to Canada for affordable Healthcare. In 2014 (which is the most up-to-date data), roughly 52,000 Canadians went to the US seeking medical care; mostly prescriptions. In contrast, over one million Americans came to Canada. That number doesn't even include how many Americans went to these countries:
Tumblr media
Anything you may have heard about Canadian healthcare is just a lie perpetuated by your government because they don't want you to see the benefits of a universal healthcare system. And not even just Canadian healthcare--the same system is used in the UK, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Norway, Denmark, Japan, the Netherlands, Iceland, New Zealand, etc. I'm not saying it's flawless, there are certainly aspects that can be improved, but I'll take it any day over the mess you have going on. 🇨🇦
No. In all honesty, this isn't about what country is "better". I have many American friends that I love and care about, and I would very much like to see them have access to free, sufficient healthcare.

I want to come back to this article, which I reblogged a post from (after seeing it reblogged by loads of people on my dash). I recommend reading the article if you haven’t done so. Its central argument revolves around the idea that “modern liberal democracy presents itself as non-ideological beyond ideology,” and that ideology itself is always presented in literature/media as unacceptably violent— villainous. (I would argue that, in fact, any sort of cultural “accretion,” in the sense that culture is perceived as "on top of” and obscuring universalized western ideology,  is tolerated only insofar as it is not really taken specifically or seriously. That’s why even characters who are presented as deeply religious (think of Matt Murdock or Rogue One’s Baze and Chirrut) are portrayed as religious in a way that is broad, universal, flexible, and vague.
One issue that the article doesn’t really delve into is that supposedly “ideologue” villains are actually profoundly anideological, except insofar as their ideology is, like, anti- modern liberal democracy’s lack of ideology. A really interesting example of this is in Iron Man: Tony Stark gets held hostage by a group of extremists whose extreme belief is... well... even the MCU wiki seems unable to provide any detail on this beyond “destroying world peace.” The film employs a weird move where it obviously relies on the Afghan setting of the villainous Ten Rings to suggest associations with radical Islamism, yet also provides evidence that the Ten Rings are not Islamists. On the one hand, it provides a sort of generic Western specter of radical Islamists— brown men speaking foreign languages and living in Afghan caves— and on the other hand it coyly removes all potential religious, political, or cultural motivation for their actions. These guys aren’t impoverished tribesmen who’ve been subject to tumultuous centuries of imperial warfare, and they’re not religious extremists living out masculine power fantasies. They’re just a group of dudes who kind of look vaguely Middle Eastern and kind of sound vaguely Middle Eastern (since Arabic and Persian are the languages we hear the most).
Of course, there’s a real-world explanation for this: Marvel wants to be able to tap into that specter of radical Islamism without offending Muslim consumers. But the textual effect is to create a picture of the world in which terrorism in Afghanistan is evacuated of all meaning. Don’t get me wrong: terrorism in Afghanistan is unbelievably destructive and to a large extent nihilistic, in that it benefits no one and spreads only despair and suffering. But at the same time, it arises out of a historical, political, economic, and religious-cultural context, and if you refuse to understand this context, then you will fail to understand why people make the choice to become terrorists (or how to stop them).
That’s the real problem here: the creation of a world in which the only rational choice is modern liberal democracy, and all other choices are nonsensical.
Marvel is a great site at which to explore this, simply because there’s so much of it. (You could also easily look at Star Wars, as MacQuarrie does in that article— why does the First Order want power? New extended universe writers have fleshed this out more in their web of liminally canonical texts, but on screen the answer seems to be, in the words of the also-manifestly-guilty-of-this-and-guilty-in-other-ways Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible: “the world is a mess, and I just need to rule it.”)
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a wildly characteristic example of this. It has the thankless task of trying to engage with the effects of the canonically almost effect-free (cf Spider-man: Far From Home) blip, and pieces together a weirdly nonsensical storyline in which the blip enable border-free mass migration, which was revoked when the other half of the world’s population reappeared. The plot revolves around a group of super soldier refugees/displaced persons who want to stop borders from being reimposed on the world. Sam Wilson refers to the refugees as “people who have been welcomed into countries that previously kept them out with barb wire,” and indeed it's hard to imagine any version of this narrative in which the “migration” we’re talking about is the migration of Global South nationals to the Global North. There’s a really plausible specter here: the Global North does source its manual and domestic labor from the Global South while, whenever possible, keeping Global South nationals out with barbed wire. It does make sense that the Global North would import laborers and then attempt to deport them when their presence was no longer convenient. That is, in fact, literally what has happened/is happening in the UK to foreign healthcare workers during the pandemic.
However, as in Iron Man, Marvel wants to mobilize a specter while also evacuating it of all meaning. None of the displaced people we see in TFATWS bear any resemblance to real-world displaced persons. In spite of their United Colors of Benetton racial diversity, they display no marks of culture, religion, nationality, or indeed poverty. They even have British and American accents. They are completely neutral in every way.
This matters for several reasons. First of all, it allows the viewer to differentiate between the migrants on-screen— Western-looking, English-speaking, non-religious— with migrants off-screen: [perceived to be] too religious, non-English-speaking, culturally and racially “other.” Secondly (again as with Iron Man), it removes all context from the act of migration. Why did these people become migrants? Uh... because of the blip, I guess? Beyond some vague references to suffering, it’s never addressed. This allows the viewer to completely detach the question of migrants/displacement from any of its structural context. Why do people migrate in the real world? Because their countries have been completely devastated by warfare, often proxy warfare carried out by imperial states. Because climate change has completely devastated the regions where they live, with or without triggering devastating warfare. Because they belong to ethnic, political, and/or religious groups that are being systematically destroyed by state governments. Because colonialism and neoliberal capitalism have completely devastated the economies of the regions where they live. This is why the stakes of migration are high.
If, as the show suggests, people just migrate for various personal reasons that really aren’t that important, then the stakes are not high, and we don’t have to feel bad about the behavior of our governments. This is a huge problem at a time when Denmark is shipping Syrian asylum-seekers back to Syria because it’s apparently fine now, Joe Biden is failing to make good on campaign promises about increasing refugee quotas, the UK is housing asylum seekers in situations that violate human rights law, migrant drownings in the Mediterranean Sea have become a regular feature, and the United States has systematically resisted fulfilling its promises to Iraqis and Afghans who risked their lives working for US forces in exchange for visas.
But, like, above and beyond the specific political issue of migration: what is the Flag Smasher ideology? “One world, one people.” I accept that there might be some viewers (mostly those with no knowledge or experience of immigration) who oppose this on principle, but it seems pretty obviously... good. So the bad part is... that they’re fighting for it? (According to people in my notes, this is Bad.) It’s possible to read this as another example of what the MacQuarrie article discusses: personal violence good, ideological violence bad. However, once again we have an example of an ideology that is not ideological, an ideology that is a specter cleaned out of any possible substance. The nonsensical choice here (the one beside which modern liberal democratic norms are obvious) is the choice to commit violence when there is no urgency that justifies this— none of the urgency that, in fact, exists in the real world, and explains why people regularly sacrifice their lives in desperate attempts to escape their homes.
This is a really good example of how capitalism— a force with no real agency or subject, no evil committee planning its deeds— ends up enacting a project that systematically enforces its ideology. Attempts to render narratives apolitical are themselves profoundly political, even when justified in terms of appeal to the consumer. This is one of the most dangerous aspects of media, IMHO.

sorry to be salty in your inbox, ignore if you want. but europeans going “durr durr YOU elected trump” when i was 14, making it seem like 1 person is the sole cause of all US Bad, made me so mad. like, i get that nordic countries have better standards of living because of universal healthcare and gun control, but let’s not pretend the reason they have less racism isn’t because they wiped all poc out. they use the us as a scapegoat for all societal problems tbh and it gets annoying.
Okay first of all, you were 14 in 2016??? I'm so old and therefore I'm now designating myself your honorary Internet big sister lol.
But yeah, I'm pretty sick and tired of people celebrating Nordic (or Scandinavian because apparently there's a difference between those two terms lol) countries as paragons of virtue in every way when like, their entire country's population is like half of Ohio's so clearly it's a lot more difficult to govern the United States and its 50 states (+ territories) than it is to govern like, Denmark. It's also a matter of size too like the western United States is geographically huge; it takes about 5 hours to drive across Washington state and we aren't even the biggest state out here. Meanwhile, you can be in three different countries in that time in parts of Europe.
Some of what's wrong with America is because of American ethos and individualism or whatever but we need to stop pretending that any other country on earth comes close to being as large and heterogeneous as the US except maybe Brazil, which like, is worse in pretty much every way than the United States so really isn't a comparison. Also like, we voted out our fascist strongman and he's now languishing in Florida getting honorary black belts, Bolsonaro may very well get reelected and even if he doesn't, Brazil doesn't have a Joe Biden in the wings.
Also like, the USA is literally the most racially diverse country on earth!! Asian countries and African countries are much more racially and religiously homogeneous. For instance, Muslims make up almost 20% of the population in India and we never hear about anti-Muslim bigotry in India because the other 80% is all Hindu and silences a lot of the discussions. Meanwhile, the percentage of Black people in the US is less than 15% but racism is still a major topic of discussion here since in addition to Black people, there are Asians and Latinos and Native Americans and Jewish people, and even groups like the Irish and Italians who were previously othered when they first immigrated but are now white.
Americans of all races and origins have long formed coalitions with other groups unlike their own, and they worked together to bring about a better future for everybody, and it literally dismisses all their hard work over the centuries to ceaselessly whinge about how this 330 million strong country is unable to instantaneously do what some country a quarter of the size of Florida was able to do. Just for one example, the Black-Jewish alliance in the American South was key in bringing about Civil Rights in the 1960s and even in 2021, the modern version of the Black-Jewish alliance elected senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in Georgia, a literal bastion of the Confederacy. And that should be celebrated!!
The point is, America very much is a melting pot, and that makes it difficult to bring about national structural change but that doesn't mean it's not worth fighting for.

you’re in denmark? that’s so cool! is the healthcare system good there? i know you’ve mentioned living in a group home or smth like that before, and i always wondered how you manage that financially (bc i was considering that as an option myself for a while, but i just can’t afford it) but it makes sense if your healthcare is good!
Yes, I'm Danish - and yes, we do have free universal health care of a decent quality! On top of that, the local municipality I'm connected to pays for my stay in the group home. I technically do pay rent, but it's mostly symbolic and only covers a fraction of the actual costs associated with my stay. The municipality covers the rest.

Copenhagen - Initial Thoughts Day 1&2
Well, we've officially been in Copenhagen for two days now! Yesterday we took an early morning flight from Keflavik to Copenhagen, which was about two and a half hours, and while we were waiting in line to board the plane, we actually ran into our classmate Clarissa! So since then, we've been spending time together. Once we got to the Copenhagen airport, we had to wait for the longest I've ever waited for my checked-in luggage- and it made me wonder if it was going to be symbolic of the rest of our time in Copenhagen. But, so far it's been fine since then. We somehow managed despite our sleep deprivation to take the M1 metro line to the Kongens Nytorv stop. After wandering for a short while, we made our way to our hostel and checked in.
After some rest time, I took a shower and felt like a new person. The hostel seems decently clean, and in comparison to the Airbnb's shower (which neither of us even tried to use), the condition of the shower is wonderful. We then wandered out to find an evening meal and ended up going to a bagel and salad shop, where I got a salad, and Ann and Clarissa got bagel sandwiches. We took our meals over to Kongens Have park, which is a massive royal park that is popular with locals, and found a nice spot in the sun to sit. People were out in droves, and we were able to start observations in earnest about the people and their lifestyles.
Tumblr media
One of our first observations was the sheer amount of young children. In comparison to the US, there were strollers and parents everywhere. Apparently, during the pandemic, Denmark had a baby boom of about 8%. Our group thinks this is because the Danish government is more friendly to parents and children with parental leave, attitudes toward work/life balance, social security nets, and universal healthcare. In comparison, according to the CDC, "The provisional number of births for the United States in 2020 was (...) down 4% from 2019." (CDC, Births Provisional Data for 2020).
Another observation was that people were actually out in the park, utilizing the green space to its fullest. We assume that this is because of the lack of private green space, such as backyards. This is probably a common occurrence in large cities in the states, but not something I personally have seen in Oregon at that volume.
After our meal, we wandered around the park and eventually made it back out into the streets of Copenhagen. We wandered, making mental notes about the streets, infrastructure, and just generally how people live here. We noticed that the Danish seem to love their flowers, especially roses. People would bike past with cut flowers, and many apartment buildings had roses growing on their sides, or small pots of flowers next to their doorstep. We also noticed how many people would sit out at tables on the sidewalks. There was one group of older folks who had brought out their own small table and made an impromptu place to sit and gossip.
Tumblr media
Near the end of that evening, we made our way down to the Nyhavn area, which is a bustling port area, filled to the brim with restaurants and outdoor seating. People from all walks of life were there enjoying the summer evening, some eating, some drinking or smoking, some just taking a walk. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of happiness, to be able to spend time with friends and loved ones on a wonderful warm Saturday night.
Today we spent a bit more leisurely. Our morning was slow, and we each grabbed breakfast at the hostel at our own pace. I had a bread roll, with one half having butter and jam, and the other with cheese and ham. I had several cups of water (it feels nearly impossible to stay hydrated while traveling, and like there are never enough sources of water), and a cup of apple juice to top off before heading back upstairs to prepare for the day.
We ended up grouping up and heading out to Christianshavn via the metro, to where Freetown Christiania sits. On our way, we found a crosswalk light for a pedestrian crossing that showed a time amount until the light would turn. I think this is a good design in some ways, and not necessarily in others. Good in that it can help give some impatient people something to quantify their waiting, and bad in that for other people, it might encourage not wanting to wait that amount of time. I guess it comes back to whether or not the phrase "ignorance is bliss" is entirely accurate or not.
Anyways, there is supposedly a very good thrifting scene in this area, so we wandered until we came to the center of the area. Murals and other pieces of art are everywhere, tucked among the beautiful greenery. There is a lake with a forested area that has hiking trails throughout, a co-op refurbishing shop for home improvement supplies, a gardening shop, and we even found a horse stable with several horses. In the forested area, we found a set of wooden stairs that had a ramp for walking a bicycle up or down it. That has been a very common occurrence I've seen on stairs here, such as in Kongens Have. Another thing we saw in Christiania aside from the beautiful art and greenery was a street where cobblestones had been covered with asphalt. I wonder how it is decided when cobblestones need to be covered as opposed to just fixed - at what point is that decision made?
Tumblr media
Freetown Christiania is apparently a commune established in 1971 and is run through a collective agreement process. It appears this commune-styled living has been a thorn in the side of the Danish government for some time due to the illegal but open buying and selling of weed, as well as the illegal occupation of the former military land. However, I personally think there are a lot of positive aspects to the concept of communal living, such as the social security nets formed so that people are not able to fall through the cracks, the general sharing of the human experience, the sharing of resources, and the positive atmosphere for self-expression through the arts. Our roommate at the hostel is currently the owner of a home in Sweden where she lives with her husband and several others in a commune-styled setup. It appears this way of living may be a good way to combat the rising cost of living in society and may tie back to our roots as prehistoric humans to live in small tight-knit groups that depend on each other for survival. I personally would not be against this style of living for myself if done correctly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We wandered away from Freetown Christiania and made our way through the campus of the Royal Danish Academy, which was interesting to see as a current college student. Eventually, we walked back through Nyhavn to the area where our hostel is, and we grabbed some chai and sat outside of a cafe to soak in the Sunday traffic flows. We watched the interactions between pedestrians, bicyclists, and cars. Bicyclists take priority as they are the fastest moving, followed by the right of way of pedestrians, and cars take last place. They must navigate their way slowly through the movement. In the US, this would not currently work. Bicyclists must be very cautious of the movement of cars, as cars have the apparent right of way.
Tumblr media
After finishing our drinks we went to Netto in search of cheap food and snacks. Netto is a small bodega-type grocery store chain that is spread throughout Copenhagen. We bought beautiful-looking danish strawberries, small smoothie drinks made entirely of fruits without any additives, and some other misc. items. Eating has been the hardest part of traveling so far for me, as it is something I have enjoyed in my own personal life being in control of. I love to cook, and I'm often in charge of dinners at my house, so I am not used to the uncertainty of not knowing where or what my next meal will be, or what may be in it. This uncertainty has been a struggle for me, and I wish I had access to a small kitchenette. However, I think I have been good at making an honest effort at eating affordable, healthy options when given the choice.
Our small grocery run finished, we went back to our hostel to relax and recharge after a full day of exploration. We stayed in our room for a few hours, and I personally laid in bed and worked on a blog post while listening to music. Once we all started to feel hungry around 4:30, we decided on where we'd go for dinner - which ended up being a marketplace called Torvehallerne. It was a 13-minute walk from our hostel, so we went there.
Tumblr media
Around the time we had decided to go to Torvehallerne, Giselle posted in our Slack channel that she had arrived at the hostel. We invited her out to dinner with us and met her there. Torvehallerne is a huge enclosed marketplace with food vendors as well as grocery items such as fresh cheese, bread, meat, and seafood. It was very busy, with many different options, so we broke up and wandered around to find our own dinners of choice. I ended up getting a bibimbap bowl with bulgogi beef, cabbage, greens, brown rice, and (to my extreme disappointment) no kimchi, Ann got a salad, Clarissa a burger, and Giselle a small quiche. We chatted and learned a bit more about each other while we ate, and then wandered leisurely back to the hostel, nerding out about aspects of the urban environment as we moved through it. We discussed the curved pedestrian-only streets, the accessibility features built into the sidewalks for sight-impaired people, and many other things.
Tumblr media
It is genuinely fun to be able to talk to people who see the world through a similar lens as yourself about something you are passionate about, and I am looking forward to continuing exploring cities throughout this trip with other equally excited nerds.

please help me pay my dentist bills
i truly cannot say how much i hate to do this, and i have been postponing making this post for so long, because i was looking for other options, but i truly can't find any other way.
in october i went to a regular checkup with my dentist where it was found that i had some cavities i needed to get fixed. so i got a new appointment and came in to have those done. however, this dentist saw that some of the cavities were in wisdom teeth and it would make the most sense to have them pulled out now, because it was almost impossible to fix as they were so far behind in my mouth, plus if didn't pulled it could mean a bigger chance of cavities coming in the teeth next to them. so i went to have them pulled out about two weeks ago. this dentist recommended also having the two wisdom teeth left being pulled for the same reasons as the first two, and because with my age (30) it will only be harder for my mouth to heal the older i get, and the chance of infections grow with age. so i am going to have those pulled on december 11th.
but i am broke. i am super broke.
for those who don't follow me, or are new to following me; my name is annika and i am 30 years old. i live (in denmark) alone with my cat, and when i say that i don't have any friends i am not exaggerating. i rarely see my family, as my mom lives quite a bit away. my youngest sister lives in sweden, and my two other sisters lives in the same city as me but we speak maybe about once every three months. i genuinely don't have any people in my life.
i am without work and have been for about five years now due to mental illness. it's only in the past year that i have started truly getting treatment despite having been in the psychiatric system since i was a child. i struggle with a number of things; depression and anxiety, ocd and a personality disorder, and the latest is that i am waiting to start a neuropsychological assessment to see if i am on the autism spectrum. honestly, there's a lot of other baggage, ranging from child abuse to partner abuse, and generally just a lot that makes no sense to unpack here. i am open to questions, though.
i just wanted to paint a picture of why i simply am not in a position to pay these bills myself. i had been saving up for ages for a vacation that i have had to cancel, and i have also had to not buy christmas presents for my family this year. i don't smoke and i don't drink, i really don't have anything that i can cut back on to save money. i have considered skipping therapy sessions for a couple of months to save that money, but my mental health can't afford that.
i already paid the first 1000 danish kroner ($148/£115/€134) to cover the regular checkup in october and the cavity fillings. but i still need to pay for the pulling of the four wisdom teeth which is about 1600 danish kroner per tooth ($235/£184/€214).
so all in all i need about 6400 danish kroner ($948/£736/€856), and i really just don't know where to find that kind of money. this is more than twice as much as i have after paying bills every month.
the dentist have been very kind about letting me know that they don't expect me to pay the whole thing at once due to my situation, but there's a limit to how long i can pay it off without them having to send it on to collecting. as far as i understand the limit is a couple of months, but this amount will take me literally years to pay off. i barely scrape by as my financial situation is, and i just don't know what else to do than ask for help.
i can't draw or make videos, so i don't really have much to offer in return aside from pictures of my dumbass cat. i do make gifs so if you have anything you want to see, i would gladly take a shot at that as a thank you. my gifs can all be found here.
but i am at the end of my rope, and i have looked into every option, even applied for a health insurance (danish universal healthcare does not cover a long line of things, and dental + psychologists after turning 18 is not covered) and got declined because of my anxiety. so i would appreciate incredibly if you could donate even just a little bit, and if you don't have anything please reblog to spread the word.
★ PLEASE USE MY KO-FI THANK YOU ★

American employment exceptionalism
Tumblr media
National economies the world round are crashing, but the US is leading the rich world in job losses, and that is by (stupid) design.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/30/opinion/coronavirus-economy-saez-zucman.html
Other countries' governments are socializing wages, subsidizing the majority of employers' payrolls so long as they keep their employees on the rolls. That means that when the crisis lifts, employees just show up for work the next day and everything starts moving.
In the US, Congress has decided to beef up unemployment benefits. That means that laid off employees will be able to pay (most of) their bills -- but when the crisis is over, the economy will be at a standing start, as millions (up to 30%!) of the country seeks employment.
This isn't just catastrophic for businesses (though it is). It's also a personal calamity multiplied tens of millions of times: grief for lost jobs, anxiety for economic futures, having to fill in paperwork in the midst of a pandemic with its health, childcare, etc demands.
To make matters worse, Americans who lose their jobs lose their healthcare...in the middle of a pandemic.
Congress needs to fix this in the next stimulus. It has guaranteed  airline wages already - now it has to sort out the other US industries  (including gig workers and other contractors). Ireland, the UK and  Denmark were all able to build systems for this virtually overnight.
The package also needs to create Covidcare For All, universal health coverage for the duration of the emergency (and beyond, ideally - once Americans get a taste for it).
Denmark is also covering "essential business maintenance costs, like rents, utilities, interest on debt, health insurance premiums" so they can "hibernate without bleeding cash and risking bankruptcy." Italy's about to do the same.
As Zucman and Saez write in the NYT, we can avoid profiteering with a system that is "fair, comprehensive and transparent": high taxes on "abnormal profits" during the crisis, as was policy during the 1918 flu, WWII and the Korean War.

Yea, other countries have universal healthcare, free college, etc., etc. And most of not all of those countries have immigration and naturalization policies that make the USA's look lenient (you never hear about millions of war refugees heading into the Nordic countries, for instance). These two things are not unconnected.
Oh, shut up, white nationalist fash.
As a percentage of their population, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Canada, and Switzerland all allow more immigrants than the US does. Hell, Russia allows more than we do.
In fact, the US is towards the bottom with South Korea and China. We're not rock bottom, like Japan or Israel (Israel is included because of their strict regulations outside "right of return") but we're close.
So by this logic, we'd already have a robust public healthcare system, free University and generous postgrad work, sprawling public transport, ect.
We're not going to let you appropriate leftist programs to shield your racist ends, we've seen that and it was literally Nazism.

I've wanted to move to Denmark for a few years now to the point where I've begun to seriously study the language, and sometimes I forget that just bc ya'll have universal healthcare and living wages doesn't mean ppl still aren't queerphobic. I thought I'd just be dealing with the ur typical racism bc I'm african-american.
Homophobia is thankfully almost non-existant among adults. I've met... idk three homophobic adults in my life.
Casual transphobia and racism is pretty rampant though. It's the "Oh yeah 'he's' a woman now, that's fine I guess, but I'm still gonna misgender and deadname 'him'" kind of transphobia and... idk I've never experienced the racism first-hand since I'm white, but it's the same mood. Like "we accept you in the sense that you can sit with us, but we're gonna say stupid shit all the while"
The worst is probably islamophobia. It's downright vile in Denmark. Islamophobia is thriving here :/
