Google CEO Sundar Pichai Reveals How He Begins His Day

Google CEO Sundar Pichai begins his day by reading. This may not come as a surprise given his leadership role and successful career. But now, Mr Pichai has shared that he is not reading a newspaper or a book first thing in the morning. Instead, he swears by a nice tech website that also features on the favourites list of other big names like Meta founder-CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

In a conversation with Wired, Mr Pichai said that he begins his day by reading Techmeme, a website that collates the latest global tech news from around the world.

Founded in 2005 by Gabe Rivera, Techmeme offers a curated collection of headlines accompanied by concise summaries and links to the original articles.

This format enables users to swiftly peruse a wide array of tech news sourced from various outlets. It also provides readers with a comprehensive snapshot of daily industry developments, making it a preferred website for those interested in tech.

Sharing what makes Techmeme a go-to site for tech luminaries, Mr Rivera told Business Insider, “Techmeme is the first read for execs in tech everywhere because we're dead set on providing the 'executive summary' experience they demand. For instance, importance-ranked, highly detailed headlines, alongside a density of links providing context and a sense of reach. No trivialities or "clickbait". And of course, no popups, videos, or intrusive ads.”

Previously numerous tech greats, including Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Satya Nadella of Microsoft, have been known to frequent its pages.

Additionally, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, along with other senior tech executives, also count themselves among Techmeme's loyal readers.

Thijs Vieleers: 'Offline koop ik zelden iets'

De gehele carrière van Thijs Vieleers staat in het teken van digitaal ondernemen; zo was hij medeverantwoordelijk voor de start van Funda en digital director bij G-Star RAW. Afgelopen zomer werd hij chief operating officer bij BookerZzz, de organisatie achter HotelSpecials en BungalowSpecials.

De gehele carrière van Thijs Vieleers staat in het teken van digitaal ondernemen; zo was hij medeverantwoordelijk voor de start van Funda en digital director bij G-Star RAW. Afgelopen zomer stapte hij over naar de reiswereld en werd hij chief operating officer bij BookerZzz, de organisatie achter HotelSpecials en BungalowSpecials, en de nummer 21 in de Travel30.

Inspiratie ‘Voor mijn dagelijkse online nieuwsvoorziening gebruik ik een aantal services zoals Nuzzle, Pocket en Digg Reader. Daarnaast is Techmeme belangrijk voor me – voor alle technologienieuws. Op het gebied van travel kijk ik veel naar Airbnb, want dat vind ik leidend in design voor travel.

Offline vind ik industrieel design een goede inspiratiebron. Ik hou van de ontwerpen van Braun, gemaakt door Dieter Rams. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat industrieel ontwerpen de bakermat is voor interactiedesign. Veel mensen die industrieel ontwerpen hebben gestudeerd, werken nu steeds meer in online design, waar interactie met de website nodig is. Webdesign moet vaak nuttig en bruikbaar zijn; gebruiksvriendelijkheid moet altijd key zijn, en industrieel kunnen ontwerpen is daar een goede achtergrond voor.’

E-commerce ‘De e-commerce trekt me aan, omdat het een duidelijk doel heeft dat meetbaar is. Wat me vooral aanspreekt is de duidelijke functionele doelgerichtheid: je wilt dat iemand iets bij je koopt. Bovendien speelt e-commerce een rol in alle productgroepen. Het is nog niet zo lang geleden dat je je niet kon voorstellen dat je een bank online zou kopen, nu is dat de normaalste zaak van de wereld.

Ik vind het interessant om te zien dat e-commerce zich ontwikkelt van de laagste prijs naar de beste service. Het beste voorbeeld hiervan is Coolblue, dat communiceert heel knap op alle mogelijke manieren met z’n merk.’

Shoppen ‘Als ik shop, shop ik online. Ik ben gek op gadgets – zoals vrouwen schoenen kopen, koop ik gadgets. Ik ben een fan van smart homes, van domotica; de Nest-thermostaat en zo.

Offline koop ik zelden iets. Hoewel … sinds ik bij mijn nieuwe werkgever zit, laat ik me wel eens verleiden tot impulsaankopen. Het kantoor staat namelijk midden in Haarlem, en dat heeft een heel leuke binnenstad. Daar stap ik wel eens een winkel binnen.’

Vrije tijd ‘Naast sporten – ik hockey en ik loop hard – breng ik mijn vrije tijd het liefst door met mijn gezin. Ik heb een vrouw en twee tienerdochters en ik vind het leuk om met hen op stap te gaan. We maken stedentripjes of gaan op vakantie, bij voorkeur naar plekken waar mijn dochters nog niet zijn geweest, want ik wil ze graag de wereld laten zien. We zijn al naar Thailand geweest, en ik zou nu graag met ze op safari gaan in Botswana of Namibië. Op mijn lijstje staat verder nog Canada, vanwege de ruimte en de prachtige natuur. Ik wil dan met een camper van west naar oost rijden.’

Trots ‘Ik ben trots op het feit dat ik meegewerkt heb aan de start en verdere groei van Funda. We hebben er met een jong team in relatief korte tijd een succes van gemaakt. Het is nog steeds een standaard in UX-design van huizensites.’

Citaat ‘In mijn nieuwe baan maak ik wel gebruik van het beroemde citaat uit een speech van Steve Jobs: ‘Stay hungry, stay foolish.’ Alleen pas ik dat een beetje aan, gezien mijn werkgever HotelSpecials. Bij mij is het nu: Stay hungry, stay special.’
