Los Angeles hotel marketing executive Alice Wilson (Italia Ricci) is a finalist on the hugely popular TV dating show “Happily Ever After,” but seems more concerned about promoting the hotel chain she works for than actually finding love. Nonetheless, bachelor Tanner Dylan (Jack Turner) is smitten by her and chooses Alice for the final round of dates, sending everyone back East to her snowy Vermont hometown, Winterland, to meet Alice’s family and participate in the upcoming Winterland Festival of Lights. Upon arriving in the picturesque town which she left over five years ago, Alice is greeted like a celebrity. But her excitement is quickly tempered when she discovers she, Tanner and the production crew will be staying at the Candlelight Inn, which is now owned and run by her high school sweetheart, Brett (Chad Michael Murray). Despite Alice’s protests to the contrary, it’s obvious there is still some unfinished business between her and Brett. When show producer Lauren (Aliyah O’Brien) picks up on that, she sees an opportunity for drama, enlisting the help of Alice’s mother, Molly (Wanda Cannon) to have Brett drop by the house at every opportunity. Although Alice and Brett keep things friendly at first, they begin to reminisce and old disagreements soon surface. As they rehash the events of their breakup years earlier, they find themselves back to where they left off and each makes it clear they’re ready to move on. Once Tanner arrives in town, Alice refocuses all her attention on him. But when dinner with her family doesn’t go as planned and Brett suddenly shows up again at the family home, Alice makes it clear she is not succumbing to their scheme to keep her home for good. Alice and Tanner continue their date week in the charming town, culminating with their participation in the Winterland Festival’s annual chili cookoff, which Alice has won in years past. However, when Alice sees Brett has entered the competition – and with Helene (Teagan Vincze), her old high school rival, no less – it’s more than she can bear. Her competitive nature kicks in, leading to a chili cookoff “death match” where it’s all about winning and Tanner is almost an afterthought. After the events of the chili cookoff, it becomes obvious to Tanner that Alice’s feelings lie elsewhere and he confronts her at their romantic candlelight dinner, forcing her to re-think her choices in life and decide what’s truly important to her.
