a. 감독이 ‘헤드윅(Hedwig and the Angry Inch)’을 맡았던(각본/감독/주연, 본인이 다 했음. 미쳤죠) ‘존 카메론 미첼(John Cameron Mitchell)’이 여기서도 감독을 맡았더라. 대단해. ‘헤드윅’에서의 어두운 색채가 이 영화에도 그대로 보인다. 하지만 어두욱 색채 안에서 밝은, 희망이 보이게 했다는 것도 신기해.

b. 살면서 사람들을 만나고 자연스레 그들의 곁을 떠나 하늘나라로 간 이들의 사연도 듣게 된다. 가까운 가족이 세상을 떠날 때, 경우의 수는 두 가지가 있다. 누구도 예상하지 못한 ��태에서 갑작스럽게 세상을 떠난 경우와 마음의 준비를 할 수 있었던 경우. 타인의 죽음이란 단어 앞에서 이렇게 경우의 수를 나누는 게 도리가 아닐 수도 있지만 말이다.

후자의 경우엔 대표적으로 연세가 들어서 자연스럽게 떠난 이들. 전자의 경우엔 정말 말 그대로, 예상하지 못한 죽음. 이른 나이에 잃게 된 가족, 아픔으로 시달렸던 가족. 어느 죽음이 덜 무겁고 덜 가슴이 미어지겠냐마는.

c. 갑작스럽게 가족이 떠났을 때, 그리고 그들이 생전에 다른 가족으로부터 헌신적인 사랑을 받았을 경우. 그들이 세상을 떠나면 온전히 그 상처는 남겨진 이들에게 남더라. 자신의 가족이 떠난 것엔 평생 익숙해지지 않더라. 잊은 줄 알았는데도 가끔 그들의 입에선 이 주제가 나오고 그러면 어김없이 숙연해진다. ‘아, 시간이 한참 지났으니 잊은 줄 알았는데 역시 그럴 수가 없지’ 하는 안타까움이 남는다.

그 가운데 남겨진 이들에게 남은 가장 큰 상처는 마음의 병이었다. 왜 그렇게 일찍 떠날 수밖에 없었는지 원망도 하고, 후회도 하고, 우울해지기도 하고, 자책하기도 하고. 그렇게 하루 24시간을 보내다가, 빈자리를 차차 잊기도 하고, 웃음을 되찾기도 하고, 그러다 또 깊은 수렁이 느껴지기도 하고.

d. 그래서 나는 영화가 말하고자 하는 대사들을 깊게 이해할 수 있었다. 그리고 이 시나리오를 쓴 (원작이 따로 있으려나?) 작가가 어쩜 이렇게 섬세하게 표현했을까 싶은 감탄이 나왔다. 아마 그도 많이 아파본 뒤에 쓴 것일 수도.

e. 사람이란 그럼에도 살아가는 것이다. ‘산 사람은 살아야지’라는 뻔한 위로는 오히려 독이 될 것 같고 (늘 말하잖아요? 한껏 지친 사람에게 ‘힘내’라는 말을 하면 더 짜증 난다고. 그거랑 비슷한 이치) 그저 자신의 몫을 지키고 남은 삶을 헤쳐나갈 뿐이다.

😿Coyote Dies

Bad title sequence. Honestly just a bad intro. Not sure at all how it will play into the movie other than “hey everyone, some messed up stuff is gonna happen!” What is going on? Really interesting character building, these beautifully awkward conversations about hard topics that felt so real. Beginning was far too slow to finally get into things. Movie could have been shorter but it was pretty damn good. Would have rated 4 stars if not for the unnecessary length.

Dog (coyote) dies right the fuck away (are you kidding me? “Game changer films” yeah, okay). They are in Mexico. Eden is a psycho. Couple is part of a weird cult that definitely isn’t a cult. They all play never-have-I-ever but it's called “I want” and it is weird. “Why is everyone acting so fucking polite?” “Moving forward is not a betrayal.” “I love you, Khera, but I don't think you can help me.” Looks like African art on the walls when these people have such a hard on for Mexico? Okay, I see you. “They are just people” Yeah, people who die quick, but, hey, that’s life, or death. So, yeah, the red lanterns are all the cult people who are killing. It’s all just selfish honestly.

Film after film: The Invitation (dir. Karyn Kusama, 2015)

This pleasantly slow-boiling though mostly predictable horror film displays what I have just come to identify as typically problematic of Kusama's almost-great films: there's a boring aesthetic glibness to what the film sounds and looks like, which unfortunately translates into the acting. No one is particularly interesting here, no one gives a bad or flat performance. There's simply not much registering beyond the impressive twisty reveal that sets off the speedy and bloody final act.
