Lonestar (1996) If you've never seen this finely crafted film I suggest that you seek it out and do so. I originally saw this in the theater when it was released back in '96 and I'm sure I didn't appreciate the deftness of the script, the seamless transitions that move the narrative from the present into the past and back again, nor the wonderful acting. As the stills here demonstrate, racial anxieties about American history, playing out here in a school meeting in Texas, are not new and contemporary right-wing attacks on how "history" is taught (and what "history" is the "correct" one) are as old as the public school system itself. While this scene might give the impression that the film is overly didactic, it's really not. The politics are foregrounded in a way that serves to compliment the overall narrative, one that digs into the past, how it affects the present, and how people live with it (or how we lie to ourselves about what came before us and what we've inherited). You also get to see Kris Kristofferson play a real POS.

Matewan (1987). A labor union organizer comes to an embattled mining community brutally and violently dominated and harassed by the mining company.
Movies about American unions, particularly American unions in coal country, are remarkably common, but few manage the level of grit, honesty and hope that Matewan does. What a great film! Really drums home the resilience of this community and the challenges of unifying workers when those at the top are all too willing to exploit differences of race, gender and class in order to divide. Just a great, well-made film. 8/10.

How come it feels the same? I don't know. It just feels good. Always did.

Matewan (1987)
Matewan is a dramatized version of the Battle of Matewan, a coal miner’s strike that took place in Matewan, West Virginia in 1920. Starring Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones, and Mary McDonnell, Matewan was a critical success, but flopped in the box office. The film was praised for its acting as well as the writing, holding the film up and allowing the message to get across clearly. Matewan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography and ranked number 21 on Empire’s list of 50 Greatest American Independent Movies. Needless to say, this film is a must-watch for a great grasp of real-life anarchism at work.

Great Expectations (1998)
Tumblr media
Summary: Aspiring artist Finn (Ethan Hawke) makes it to high society, but is still in love with the haughty Estella (Gwyneth Paltrow) for some reason.
Boring drag with too many Dutch angles and wasted cast. Didn't care about anyone, and there was no cohesion.
Rating: 1/5
