Is it too late for 1/1?
Have a Skarloey anyway!! Been a little unsure of what sort of TTTE content to draw recently, but I saw a BEAUTIFUL picture of Talyllyn on Alamy and decided to redraw it as Loey! It really helped me practice my shading. Such a beautiful engine.
Here's the photograph I was inspired from! ---> https://www.alamy.com/talyllyn-steam-saddle-tank-locomotive-showing-headboard-with-welsh-image150395349.html

Talyllyn Railway No. 1 "Talyllyn"
Fletcher Jennings, 1864
I didn't expect to see Talyllyn that day, so it was a very pleasant surprise that, as my family and I relaxed at Abergynolwyn, she suddenly arrived with a few of the bogie coaches in tow. And, as you can see, she is absolutely resplendent in a livery inspired by the old GER.

What ugly scars you've got!
Some of the volunteers can be critical about looks.
Employee 1: Indeed! A lovely line needs lovely engines! Not big-nosed, scarred up monsters!
Employee 2: I've got just the thing to fix this. Kids , enthusiasts and patrons don't need to take pictures of an engine with a face like this! They want a beautiful, graceful looking engine. With a face or without. It'll be like those Awdry Extravaganzas, but in reverse!
Later that day...
Talyllyn doesn't really get hurt by insults anymore. She just gets annoyed.

Traintober 2023: Day 1 - Free Day
Preservation on Sodor:
Sodor must be one of the most interesting places to look at when it comes to railway preservation, if not also road, sea and air preservation. For starters, the island’s railways are all still primarily run by vintage steam traction – but there’s also Harold, who is in his 60s or 70s at this point, Bertie the bus (who is nearing 100), Trevor and Terrence and George – not to mention the fact that the island seems to continue to have antique ships within its waters, including steam ships and fishing trawlers.
But of course, I want to focus on the railways – and in particular how Sodor must be the British hub for heritage railways, museums and other attractions. For starters, Sodor has by far the largest heritage railway system in the world for its size, with over 80 miles of mainline, several branchlines, a narrow-gauge railway, a mountain railway and a miniature gauge railway. It also has a massive fleet of engines – 80 by the Reverend’s count on the NWR alone – making it possibly the single largest working heritage railway in the UK, if not Europe. This would instantly attract many preservationists wishing to run their locomotives, meaning that mainline excursions and visitors would be a frequent sight on the island. This in turn would bring in tourists, who would make money for the NWR and the railway the engines belong to, as well as helping the Fat Controller if one of his enignes is unable to work. It would also give us as railfans the chance to see unique motive power on a variety of trains - like a Coronation Class pulling a slow goods, or a Hughes Crab on a China Clay train - things we don't get to see anymore.
Furthermore, Sodor is home to Crovan’s Gate Works, the largest steamworks of its kind in Britain. For its influence, I am going to turn to 60163 Tornado. When Tornado was built, her boiler had to be manufactured in Germany because there was just no one in the UK able to produce a boiler of the type, while the superheater header needed to be attempted by three foundries before it was assembled correctly. Crovan’s Gate Works, which is able to maintain a full fleet of engines including Gordon – who is also an A1 with many similarities – would have been able to do both in a far timelier manner. The same would go for all locomotive repair programs in the UK. Crovan’s Gate would either host locomotives or manufacture parts for them, becoming a hub for preservation across the country. Engines like Stepney or Green Arrow would be able to be overhauled at the Works, rather than be taken out of service. This would effect how many steam engines are in working order in Britain, if not Europe, as the refurbishment time would be significantly shortened - something that is compounded if said locomotive shares any components with a Sodor engine - like Talyllyn, Dolgoch, Flying Scotsman or any of the Black 5s, Panniers or Autotanks in preservation.
This brings me on to the last point: International Tourism. Sodor must be one of the most visited locations in Britain in this universe. For starters, there’s all the fans of the book and TV series (which are both canon and referenced in the books). This means that Sodor would have tens of thousands of families coming to the island from around the world annually to see the ‘Eight Famous Engines’ or the ‘Steam Team’, bringing in a massive amount of revenue for hotels, local businesses and the railways themselves. But there would also be the railfans who come with the aforementioned railtours, as well as international railfans who want to see steam in action in a mainline setting – something nearly impossible anywhere on the planet. Sodor has at least one airport (and probably two, considering in real life there is an airport on Walney Island near the real-life Vickerstown), six ports connected to the NWR, and a rail and road link to the UK. The island has the infrastructure to handle the flocks of tourists, and this would in turn benefit much of the rest of Northern England. This would majorly benefit the preservation world by bringing in funding for Sodor, which is in turn able to fund things like track upgrades, or overhauls for engines beyond their own railway. It also gives other railways a good place to promote themselves, as Sodor has a guaranteed market for tourists who may travel to these other railways.
You cannot understate how much these books have done for Sodor, and for railway preservation as a whole.
So, Sodor is at the very least a centre for preservation in the UK, with railtours, overhauls and masses of international tourists – but it’s also where a lot of engines were likely rescued from. We see it in Oliver and Douglas, but engines know of Sodor and its safety. I can imagine an alternate universe in which engines keep turning up throughout the 1960s, being brought to safety on Sodor and then sold to heritage railways, being overhauled at Crovan’s Gate before moving to their new homes. Sodor would act as an intermediate in this era, being able to do the paperwork to preserve engines due to its position in the national network while also being aligned with the cause of the heritage railways. Sodor is a safe haven for steam, and this would have a significant impact on its position as a preservation hub for the UK.

Tidbits and bobs#1
Essentially my version of a lore dump
- All sentient machines, regardless of where they are built or their origin, believe in a singular deity named Lady. She is the station pilot for the Grand Terminus, the last stop for all sentient machines. Lady is seen as equal parts God and grim reaper and can appear in a multitude of forms, from locomotive to tug boat. She claims all sentient machines as her children and is believed to be very kind and gentle. This belief system has aspects of reincarnation, as it is believed that the soul of the machines shall be forged anew and come to incarnate a new form of vehicle or machine.
- Lady may choose a "guardian" to help with more earthly affairs on her behalf. It is unclear what they stand guard over, however.
- It is believed that Lady watches over the Isle of Sodor, as machinery built there seems to have a higher chance of sentience. However, this is both unproven and unconfirmed.
Ok enough lady stuff I just wanted to talk about her (she's neat)
- Thomas's route takes him all the way to Tidmouth and he often brings the townsfolk to their big city jobs.
- The official NWR freight engine livery is the green and red stripes, as worn by Henry and Percy.
- Percy has been requested as a guest of honor for at least 52 weddings and he has attended 34.
- The original Ulfstead Castle was destroyed in a landslide in 1991. The new Ulfstead Castle was built in 2000 and is part estate, railway, and museum, all orchestrated by the Earl of Sodor, Sir Robert Norramby.
- May 11th is Sodor Day, which marks the end of a week-long festival for all things Sudrian. Also, May 11th and Christmas Day are the only times the NWR intentionally reduces its services.
- In 2000, Sodor's Council passed a law allowing the marriage of sentient machines.
- The volunteers on the Talyllyn railway often send gag jokes or pranks to the workers of the SKR. The biggest prank yet was when they swapped Sir Handel with Sir Haydn (with permission from both the Thin Controller and the Talyllyn Preservation Society) and waited to see how long it would take someone to notice. Sir Haydn was on Sodor for 2 weeks and was found out by Duncan, who was suspicious as to why "Handel" was being so polite to him.
- Out of all the famous eight engines, Gordon is the one who dislikes his TV theme song the most. He claims that "it wasn't grand enough."
- Thomas's favorite TV episode is "Thomas and the Jet Engine." On multiple occasions, he has begged the Fat Controller to let him recreate the episode, just so he can say he is the fastest engine on Sodor.
- Edward is the unofficial father of Thomas, Bill, Ben, Rosie, Philip, and Ryan.
- Gordon is surprisingly good at giving advice. He has even given Edward some kind words.
- Boco is the official secondary for the Wild Nor'wester.
- Sodor is a sanctuary for sentient machines, and as such, Crovan's Gate Works can fix just about any type of machine in the world, whether it's diesel, steam, electric, gasoline, kerosene, or hydrogen. Bring them any type of motive power, and they can fix it in no time flat.
- During the purge of steam, Henry and later Murdoch often smuggled engines onto Sodor, attached to the ends of their freight trains.

I need more lore on that very attractive Fletcher Jennings (taly)
a bit of a rundown of (no. 1) for you :)
- his name is huw jones, but he honestly goes by ‘no 1’ more than he ever goes by ‘huw’. he probably thrives off the ego rub
- he’s 29 years old physically, 159 years old technically. (24 september 1864) i could get into my lore about how they age, etc. but i feel like that could all be compressed into one giant post.
- however! speaking of an ego rub, though talyllyn is old af (turning 160 this year!) he still has a bit of a ‘princely’ manner in how he carries himself. i think a lot of people would think him to be humble like his rws counterpart (skarloey), but i think the fact that he ran nearly continuously from 1865-1945 is a little bit of a flex if i do say so myself. he wants to be celebrated for that, wouldn’t you?
- he’s got a crazy rivalry with the other engines on the railway, and chewed dolgoch out over the fact that he would rather buy ‘replacements’ (no. 3 and no. 4) from the corris than give him a full overhaul (like no 2 and the volunteers could give him a complete overhaul with 50 GBP, but i digress)
- talyllyn has a lot of old victorian mannerisms. if you enter his room it’s like a time warp, a bit of nursing home core honestly. an old iron bed, floral prints, trinkets, the whole grandma gamut.
here’s a quote from railway adventure that i feel like is really fitting of just…no. 1
“…like everything else about the railway this room had remained firmly rooted in the Victorian age; it made no concession whatever to the 20th century, was not in the best state of repair and looked as if it had not been spring-cleaned within living memory. One end of it had been fitted up as a booking office with a long counter, a ticket cabinet and a ticket date stamping machine. This last was of the early pattern on which a change of date type can only be effected with the aid of some pointed instrument such as a penknife, and where the ink ribbon must be periodically wound back by hand.”
- according to railway adventure by LTC rolt (my main ref for no. 1) whenever no. 1 first arrived it was bouncy and wild due to its “horizontal motion” which makes me feel like he’s a lot more brisk than dolgoch.
- huw talks fast, and is a lot more charismatic. he goes “yup… indeed…aye…” in conversation while dolgoch goes “isn’t it?” and “mhm.”
- pre-preservation i feel like that no. 1 was the ‘preferred’ engine. it’s more a headcanon for me rather than fact, but i feel like the reason why no. 1 had so many overhauls in the past compared to no. 2 was because no 1 was the one who ran better after all of the ‘teething troubles’ were fixed.
- to me, even though the two are quite old, there is still a rivalry between no1 and no2 to this day. think a big brother vs little brother rivalry. the ‘i know better’ role, y’know?
i think that’s basically all i have now. it’s kind of funny bc no. 1 is actually the least developed of my narrow gauge humanization ocs, (that’s a mouthful) but please send more asks if you want to know more!!

these are just sketches of the Talyllyn Railway engines. In my alternate universe, they are pets with wheels on their legs who are related to the fictional Skarloey Railway engines (which is based on Talyllyn)
Design notes (warning: very loooooooong)
I based their designs off of various fictional animal characters? I wanted Talyllyn (Skarloey), Edward Thomas (Peter Sam) and Sir Haydn (Sir Handel) to look like they came from a Saturday Morning Cartoon. Sir Haydn's a Scooby Doo knock-off, Edward Thomas reminds me of Buttons from the Animaniacs Buttons & Mindy Segments, and Talyllyn honestly looks like he came from Tom & Jerry.
(Rheneas) Dolgoch's different, I gave her a disney-ish design. I based her off of Jenna (from the Balto movies)
I wanted to show Douglas (Duncan) and Midlander's (Rusty) contrasting personalities. Cute little maintenance pony/big tough guard dog. Midlander is based on a generation 1 my little pony. Douglas is based on Charlie Barkin from All Dogs Go to Heaven.

The Skarloey Railway Crew
WARNING: SHIPPING, M/M, MPREG REFERENCES, FEMALE RHENEAS.
Here's my concept for the Skarloey Railway's engines. This only includes the core group/permanent members, which in my version includes Duke.
The following also includes the personal nicknames given to each engine by Duncan.
SR Number 1: Skarloey (aka: The Auld Yin/Big Man)
Skarloey is the oldest member of the railway and the official leader of the crew. Courtesy of his rich baritone voice, he is the most easily recognised long before his arrival. This is a surprise to Skarloey, as he has no idea how loud his voice is. A devoted believer in the medicinal power of brandy, he always has at least one hip flask on his person.
Although he is a firm and no-nonsense leader, Skarloey is extremely kind and will always help someone in genuine need. He does not permit discrimination among engines, valuing everyone by character and work ethic. He has a soft spot for Edward and Lady - in a fatherly and granfatherly way. Many assume that he and Rheneas - like their twin siblings Talyllyn and Dolgoch - are married. Skarloey will quickly correct this, proclaiming that the love he bears for Rheneas is the love of the sister he never had.
SR Number 2: Rheneas (aka: Wee Ma)
Rheneas is the second oldest member of the railway and the second-in-command.
Rheneas acts as a mother figure to Edward (whose relationship with her own mother his always been strained) and as a grandmother figure to everyone else. This has earned her the title of "Grandmother of Sodor" and often is referred to as "Nanny Ren" by many engines.
Having a wiser and more reserved nature, Rheneas is considered a moderating influence to Skarloey and the other engines. However, it is said that even Skarloey, Duke, and Edward are frightened of angering her. She once had to temporarily use a cane following a wheel repair, which had to be forcibly taken from her after she used it to stop an argument between Sir Handel and Duncan. Recently, she has taken up knitting, and many engines and humans own examples of her work as gifts.
SR Number 3: Sir Handel (aka: Peter Sam's pet)
Sir Handel is the self-proclaimed 'Express Engine' of the railway and clearly emulates the other Express engine on Sodor in his appearance. He used to have a reputation for being arrogant and rude after his early years, causing a lot of problems for the railway. Maturing over the years, being reunited with Duke, and starting a family with Peter Sam have put an end to this, but his old bad habits will resurface if he loses his temper. However, he is extremely hard-working and reliable, emulating his role models Duke and Skarloey in their younger days, and is much better liked now. He also has the best singing voice out of all the engines.
Married to the love of his life, Peter Sam, and the father of their (soon to be) three children, Sir Handel is determined to set the same good example as his Grandpuff, Duke, did for him.
SR Number 4: Peter Sam (aka: Happy Wee Harpy)
Peter Sam is the sunniest engine on the Skarloey railway and one of the most popular. It is also a surprise to many that he is also the second strongest, thanks to his Giesel funnel.
Peter Sam is also the cook of the railway, being something of a foodie, and often cooks for the others. He is an engine who doesn't hold back on his appetite, which has caused some weight gain. This has done little to damage his self-esteem or ability to do his work, but Victor is keeping an eye on him, just in case.
Peter Sam's naivete does lead to him taking things a little too literally, which has caused him trouble in the past. He also has a tendency to worry about the others to his detriment and wears his enormous heart on his sleeve. Fortunately, the others are always on hand to make sure he doesn't go overboard.
Peter Sam is married to Sir Handel, with whom he has two children - Nerys and Duke Jr - and is expecting their second daughter, Wren. Peter Sam enjoys having a family and is hoping to grow it further.
SR Number 5: Rusty (aka: Buzzbox)
Rusty was one of the first diesels on the island of Sodor and remains the only one on the Skarloey railway. He serves as the 'Handy-engine' on the railway, maintaining the old rails and helping with breakdowns. Unlike some of his NWR counterparts, Rusty doesn't believe in Diesel superiority and might even be seen as pro-Steam. He is very well liked by the other engines thanks to his work ethic and is very well-respected by the other diesels. Many have said that he is the best influence for the young and impressionable Paxton, working hard to undo the bad habits taught to the younger engine by Diesel and Diesel 10. He is also very good friends with Liora/Lady. After a shaky start, he and Duncan entered into a friendship/rivalmance.
Rusty is also struggling with some weight gain, having become the taste-tester for Peter Sam's cooking experiments. While he doesn't consume many sweet things,he is incapable of saying no to the savoury things Peter Sam offers him.
SR Number 6: Duncan (aka: hardest working engine on the railway)
Duncan is the strongest engine on the Skarloey railway and the most volatile. Built in Kilmarnock, Scotland, Duncan's formative years were spent in a factory. This is largely responsible for his coarse language and lack of social experience. He often struggles with the more genteel and peaceful environment of his new home but claims that he is getting used to it. In truth, he has come to like it here.
Duncan is blunt to the point of rudeness and extremely stubborn. This has brought him into conflict with every engine on the railway at some point and is the reason he only pulls passenger trains occasionally. He's also one of the few engines that Edward has sworn at. He has also had a few run-ins with Donald and Douglas, although nobody within earshot was able to understand their accents enough to work out why. However, Duncan is not without his good points. He has never ignored an engine who needed help (although he will complain about it) and is not afraid of hard work. A true diamond in the rough.
SR Number 8: Duke (aka: The Judge)
Duke is the third oldest engine on the Skarloey railway and is the beloved mentor of Sir Handel and Peter Sam, who he loves as a grandfather. He is the most set in his ways, being less relaxed than his older colleagues, but is extremely respected by every engine and human on Sodor.
Duke initially struggled with settling into his new life after his long isolation and often came into conflict with Skarloey over how things were run. But with the help of Sir Handel and Peter Sam, along with the birth of their children, he has overcome these problems. It is possible that he has developed an attraction to Rheneas, although he refuses to comment.
Duke has actually proven his mettle by resolving disputes between the engines on the railway and with any arguments they may have with the NWR engines thanks to his reputation. This has led to Duncan calling him "The Judge."
SR Number 22: Luke (aka: The Fugitive)
Luke is, officially, a recent addition to the railway. But he has, in fact, lived on the island for much longer.
Luke's arrival on Sodor began with an accident, where he caused an accident that caused injury to another engine arriving with him. Believing that he had actually killed the other, a guilt-stricken Luke found refuge on the Skarloey railway, helping out in secret at the Blue Mountain Quarry. He lived there in secret for many years until a chance meeting with Thomas, who discovered that Victor was the engine that Luke believed he had killed.
Afterwards, Luke became an official member of the railway and started to venture out onto the main railway. Initially very shy and jumpy, Luke soon became comfortable with his new freedom, and everyone became enchanted with his cheery optimism and musical Irish tones.
Although much older than his appearance suggests, Luke is babied a little bit by the other engines, and he has become an unofficial third 'grandchild' for Duke. He has become more adventurous, befriending Stephen and Millie at Ulfstead castle. After realising that Paxton had been hurt by his exclusion from the others about him, Luke made a point of apologising to him personally, and the two are on very good terms. But it is with Victor that Luke's life has changed the most. After years of hiding away, Luke had to keep visiting the Steam-Works for long overdue maintenance. During this time, he grew closer to Victor after the two shared stories about their home countries, and Luke began to learn Spanish. The two are now in a committed relationship and are very happy.
Luke still has a fear of being photographed, which is evident by the frozen expressions he pulls when he has to be in a photograph - rather like this one!

How does the numbering scheme work on the UHB? If an engine leaves, does the next engine that comes to the railway and stays, get the previous engine's number, or does it work like the numbering scheme on the talyllyn, where numbers 8 and 10 left, but the next engines instead have numbers 11 and 12?
"No engines inherit numbers, the next engine in line will get the highest number. No engine gets the same number as any previous engine. If they had... then Høland would have been number 1, since No.1 was scrapped upon his arrival here... and Prydz would have been No.3... It would just have been a chaotic way of numbering engines. They messed up a little in the 80's when numbering the newest diesels though, as logically Tinfos, who arrived before me, should have been given the number 10, but she was numbered 12. Odda was given the same number as they had at their previous railway; 11, which actually suited the numbering tradition. If a new engine arrives at UHB now, it will be given the number 15 as the 15th engine that has ever set wheel on this railway."
