Before I start, I have to say that (and please don't throw me into the Colosseum for this) I think the first "Gladiator" is just okay. A solid epic historical/action flick, sure, but to me it's no more than that. And... well, "Gladiator II" is more or less the same, but with a less tight script and therefore less emotional resonance.

It's my biggest issue with the movie. The spectacles are great and the action sequences are solid, but I'm not interested in any of the characters (with the exception of the emperors and Macrinus.) They're all very one-note. To be fair, Acacius doesn't require a lot of dimensions and Pedro did a good job with the character, but Lucius and Lucilla... meh. For a movie that is 148 minutes long, it feels oddly rushed; I felt like I never had the time to get to know the characters or become invested in their fates.

On to the good parts: like I said, the emperors and Macrinus. The review that says Denzel is acting on another level and Joe is the only one that comes close to matching him is spot-on. Out of all the characters, Geta and Macrinus are the only two with some depth. Denzel is amazing, affable and gregarious one minute and then chilling and menacing the next. As for Geta, maybe I'm just biased, but it's so easy to make him one-dimensional too, except Joe imbued the character with nuance and subtlety, so although we don't get to spend a lot of time with them, we understand these two emperors and their dynamic very well. Fred also did great with Caracalla - in fact, if his character wasn't so deranged and erratic and Fred didn't play that to perfection, Geta wouldn't stand out as the sane one as much as he did. They really were the perfect double act.

When we found out that Ridley Scott had done a switcheroo and made Geta the elder brother (interestingly, the subtitle at my theater has Caracalla as the elder, which suggests the translator did more historical research than Sir Ridley and his writer!), I guessed that the movie would still follow a bit of historical facts with Macrinus manipulates Caracalla into killing Geta (OK, the bit about Macrinus manipulating Caracalla is not historical, but Caracalla killing Geta is), and then Macrinus would kill Caracalla to take the throne. Well...

And Geta's death is... my God. I gasped out loud in the theater. The head afterward was a bit goofy, but I can't say it's not effective. Poor Joe. Not only his characters always get killed, they often get killed in the gnarliest ways too.

I'm very annoyed at those early reports saying that the emperors have about 20-30 minutes of screen time though. It's more like 10! This video?

That's basically all of Joe's scenes! (Fred gets more, obviously, but not by much.)

And again, I wish they would stop using cut scenes as promo (like with AQPD1), because this still?

Never happens.

The final fight between Lucius and Macrinus is weirdly anti-climactic. Macrinus is never set up as a great fighter anyway, so there is no tension in Lucius facing him.

Also, I know I complain a lot about the lack of historical accuracies, but the ending particularly annoys me because it makes it seem like Rome is finally getting better, except it wasn't! After the terrible reign of Caracalla, we get the even worse reign of Elagabalus, and then Severus Alexander, which is basically the calm before the storm that is the Crisis of the Third Century. So if Sir Ridley is doing "Gladiator III", I'd like to see how he wriggles his way out of that!

2XKO Preview - Finding The Fun Fast - Game Informer

Back in 2015, I sat down with fighting game community staple and former Capcom employee Seth Killian for a demo of the first game from Radiant Entertainment – his then-newly founded indie studio – Rising Thunder. The title, which featured robots fighting one another, aimed to give players a 2D fighter with simple controls and little barrier to entry. Rising Thunder showed a ton of promise, so much so that League of Legends developer Riot Games acquired Radiant Entertainment in 2016. This led to the cancellation of Rising Thunder, which was at that point in alpha, with many of the core tenets transferring to a new game, codenamed Project L, which was announced in 2019.

However, around the time of the announcement of Project L, Killian left Riot Games to work at Epic Games and now Netflix, but development continued on the title at Riot Games. In February of this year, Project L was officially renamed 2XKO. I finally got my hands on the upcoming fighting game set in the League of Legends universe during a recent visit to the Riot Games campus in Santa Monica, California.

“When Riot acquired the studio, [the developers] were like, ‘What do we want to do here? Do we want to stay on the same path?'” game director Shawn Rivera says. “Rising Thunder actually innovated a lot; one-button specials with cooldowns had really never been done. You see that in modern games like Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, but looking at this IP and looking at how the Champs fight together, we actually changed it quite a bit.” 

The foundation of Rising Thunder was solid, but something didn’t quite fit the theme of a League of Legends fighter. “Being honest, [the original vision of Rising Thunder] wasn’t testing as well as we had hoped, and so we’re just like, ‘Hey, let’s revisit,’ and then we kind of landed on this team version of the game,” Rivera says. “It’s more fun to play with friends. What if we could just build it from the ground up like that? We kind of restarted, but there was a lot of inspiration from Seth and everybody that came before.”

Despite the rebuild to be a tag-team 2v2 fighter with a roster full of League of Legends Champions, some of the key elements of Rising Thunder persisted, including the one-button specials. As a result, the game is supremely playable from the jump. Rivera tells me that one of the core ideas was allowing players to find the fun as fast as possible while retaining the depth fighting game fans crave. 

The build I got my hands on featured five playable characters – Darius, Yasuo, Illaoi, Ekko, and Ahri. Darius is a slower, stronger character with a unique bleed effect where if you’re at the correct range with his specials, you deal extra chip damage. Yasuo is the Wind Samurai with several effective sword slashes in his arsenal. Illaoi is a big, bruising Champion who can summon tentacles from a totem to aid her in a scrap. Ekko is a punk genius who can manipulate time. Ahri is perhaps the most agile character in the build, complete with air dashes, a faster movement speed, and long-range projectiles. 

For my demo, I play a team of Yasuo and Ahri. The art style is immediately appealing, which goes hand in hand with the gameplay’s design to grab you from the earliest stages. Alongside a set of attack buttons with different intensities, the controller layout includes two Special buttons, one team button, and a parry button. Having the Specials mapped to single buttons may sound like it makes gameplay too simple, but in actuality, it opens up myriad possibilities to combo Specials together without much fear of imperfectly executing the motions or holds required in more traditional fighting games. The strategy and depth really come out once you experiment with holding in different directions as you press the Special buttons.

On Rivera’s advice, I combo together Yasuo’s forward Special 1 and Special 2 to launch my opponent. Then, from there, I take to the sky and juggle the opponent mid-air with a combination of two Special 1 strikes and a Special 2 to send my enemy plummeting to the ground. Then, before they can recover, I land and perform a downward Special 2 and put an exclamation point on an extremely flashy combo I would have never been able to pull off in a fighting game with more traditional controls. But pulling that off wasn’t easy; I still had to memorize the long combo and then execute it all in order – almost like how you have to when you’re hitting mits in boxing training.

I spent the rest of my time experimenting with combo-ing together different Specials and tag-team moves before messing around with the Ultimate system, which is equally as simple to pull off using the two special buttons at the same time when your character’s meter is full. These damaging, flashy attacks are awesome for pouring it on during a crucial time in the fight. 

My time with 2XKO came to a close just as I started to understand the tag-team mechanics and how to effectively combo various Specials and standard strikes. I loved what I played of Rising Thunder nearly a decade ago, and 2XKO, while different, delivers that same level of promise that I felt back in 2015. Thankfully, I won’t need to wait as long as the now-eternal wait for Rising Thunder, as 2XKO is currently set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2025 as a free-to-play title.

Prologue: Blood Magic

Blood magic was the oldest and most powerful of the ancient crafts.

The best and strongest blood crafters hailed from Dionysia, where the heart of all blood magic, the Sanguine Well, rose up from the earth. The people of Dionysia served as caretakers and protectors of the Well and, in time, reverence of the blood craft wove into the fabric of their souls.

Their culture thrived around it. Their beliefs embodied it.

Even love bowed before it.

Bonding bracelets were born of blood magic.

The ritual creation of a bonding bracelet pair marked the transition from childhood into maturity. When a man or woman reached their 20th birthday, they and their family traveled to the Sanguine Well.

Four cuts were made on the right hand. Six drops of blood offered to the water...

Then the Well would churn and rise with violence, swelling till the overflow swept over the youth who fed their blood to the currents.

When the water receded, the bracelet pair remained.

One bracelet for the man or woman who sought the well.

One for their soulmate.

Only the first of any soulmate pair (the first seeker) to perform the ritual received the bracelets. Many who traveled to the Sanguine Well left empty handed because their soulmate had offered blood first.

The first seeker’s bracelet formed fully clasped around their wrist. The second bracelet remained open and would only close for the first seeker’s destined mate.

When an unclaimed bracelet united with its true host, the open ends stretched and intertwined to form a rune.

From that moment on, the first seeker and their mate were blood bonded; their powers and abilities joined in a sacred union that was – to all known craft – unbreakable.

The strength of a blood bound pair could be quite formidable and, over the centuries, powerful soulmates rose to become great warriors, crafters, and leaders of their people…

For this reason, Dionysia did not take the gift of bonded soulmates lightly.

All proposed matches were registered and approved by the Ruling Council before an open bracelet could even be tried on by a potential partner. Both parties were required to present evidence of their commitment to one another. If the alliance was approved, the betrothed pair participated in a public ceremony where the first seeker’s intended mate would activate the bond by finally placing the open bracelet around their wrist.

The Royal Council believed this care and reverence honored the craft and the gods, thereby allowing the sacred tradition to continue.

In 900 years of recorded history, only five bonding ceremonies ended with a bracelet that did not close.

Now there were six…

Once Upon a Time...

“Jin!”

Your voice echoed dismally down the dusty corridor of Silent Truth Hall. “I’m sorry…I—”

Jin whirled on you, shaking his head vehemently.

“None of this is your fault.”

“There are many reasons why this could’ve happened,” you offered breathlessly.

“There’s only one reason why this happens.”

He sighed in defeat as you rubbed your temples in frustration.

“I don’t understand. The Council gave permission!”

The Ruling Council was a sovereign governing body of three kings and three queens, one monarch from each of Dionysia’s six royal bloodlines.

“The Council isn’t all knowing… ” Jin collapsed against a nearby wall. “This is a disaster,” he whispered.

And it was.

You had no family, but all of your friends from the Academy were there.

Jin was technically an orphan as well, but his adopted family, the Jeons, were there.

Jeon Alaya was high queen of the Ruling Council, so half the kingdom was there to see her (adopted) son bond with a craft prodigy from The Wastes.

Half the kingdom, but not her blood. Not her youngest son, you thought bitterly.

The two of you were silent for several moments while your minds struggled to process the shock.

“Do you think the rumors—what they say about me—is true?” you asked solemnly.

Jin’s head shot up in an instant.

“No,” he swore, “they’re absolutely not true.”

“But it didn’t close—”

“It didn’t close because we aren’t soulmates—not because you aren’t one of us.” His expression softened. “We were a good idea… just not the right one.”

Tears begin to burn at the corner of your eyes.

On some level you were not surprised. You cared for Jin but–

Yours was not an overly romantic attachment.

It was a strong friendship—one that spanned several years. When you decided to apply to the Royal Council for bonding, it seemed…

Logical.

Friendship was an excellent basis for blood bonding. More than one bonded pair applied as friends.

You believed in the wisdom of the Royal Council—everyone did. If you and Jin were not meant for each other, then surely the Council would see it. They would turn down the application. Someone would object…

Someone did object, your mind taunted.

But you were approved.

The date was set. Announcements made. Invitations sent out. The bracelet was placed on your wrist and…

Nothing.

Nothing happened.

Jin’s bracelet remained stubbornly un-closed.

And you had never felt so mortified, so exposed… so profoundly alone in your entire life.

It was a scandal of epic proportions, one which potentially called into question the judgement of the entire Ruling Council.

“Listen,” Jin said at last, “I need… I need to clear my head and think about the next steps. I know an expert on bonding bracelets. Maybe I can convince her to help. There might be another explanation.”

His hands slid up to grasp your shoulders in a familiar comforting gesture.

“Head to my house outside the city for a while. No one will bother you there, and I’ll be back tomorrow.” He gave your arms a brotherly squeeze. “We’ll work through this.”

You nodded, extremely grateful for the opportunity to be alone for a few hours.

Jin helped you slip out the back corridor to avoid the insanity still unfolding in the Hall (where the failed ceremony took place), then you parted with a final hug and quietly walked the few miles to his beautiful manor near the lake.

Technically, Golden Starlight House was one of many homes owned by the Jeon family. This one, however, Jin shared with his younger brother…

Jungkook

Jeon Jungkook was a sore subject for you. In fact, you preferred not to think about him at all if possible—and you certainly would never agree to hide at his house if you thought he would be there.

But Jungkook left weeks ago… right after the betrothal was announced.

“I cannot stand by and watch my brother make a mistake like this.”

His horrible words echoed in your mind as you unlocked the door, prepared to simply collapse fully clothed on the chaise when—

“Shouldn’t you be off playing bride-to-be literally anywhere else?”

You turned, already knowing who you would see.

“Jeon Jungkook. Of course.” A mirthless laugh bubbled up before you could stop it.

Just what I needed right now.

They’re OCs within Blue Horizon, which has an ongoing comic (on both Webtoons and here), a character blog (originally on Tumblr and transcripted on Neocities), AND an epic science fantasy novel (and side adventure light novel) I’ve finished and am doing edits for. It was formerly code-named “Another Sky verse” due to initially attempting a tradpub path, but it is now a solo and indie project! (03/12/24 edit.)

07.03.23 edit: Another Sky WIP is complete at 214k words! It involves many POC and LGBT characters who are pretty invested in “ancient Earthian culture” (i.e., somewhere around our era) within a planet across the galaxy, tens of thousands of years after Earthians began exploring it.

Here’s a short summary:

Thousands of years after a distant planet becomes disconnected from galactic societies, its humans are back on their feet again. The world reaches for the future, and the Protector will lead the way. Ranvir and Armando, two boys from the Protector's class, begin to discover eerie happenings upon the planet as their friend group begins to merge. Including the sudden arrival of children who seem to be from that future. Including their son, Antonio.

A lot of my previous information about the project is on Twitter. Including more detailed info, synopses, and snippets. However, I’ll slowly be shifting my focus here [as well]. Posts related to WIPs are largely tagged Blue Horizon (formerly #AnotherSkyVerse, which is now retired), but are also found at #mywrites and #myart and #my oc drawing. I now have a website for info on the OCs, including art.

GOSE (Going Seventeen)

** the descriptions are as of the latest eps when I made this post. Don't @ me 4+ months down the line if they've done something from 2020 in 2021 as well.

A variety show following the 13 members of the kpop idol group Seventeen as they complete various missions or events over the weeks.

For the most part, each theme covers 2 episodes, with special extra footage coming after the preview for the next week's program every time.

Because of the ever-revolving themes, it is hard to say specifically what is done one episode to the next, and episodes can be watched in any order (just watch #1 before #2 of a particular theme).

Some of my favorite themes have been:

Don't Lie (Played 3 separate times across GOSE 2020 and 2021).

Don't lie features Seventeen playing a game where they try to figure out which among them are "Mafia" (and the Mafia try to kill the rest of the team) while simultaneously hunting around various sets for hundreds of dollars of real money. Cutthroat and chaotic, it's always worth a laugh! (They did play just the Mafia Game in the 2019 season (I think), but the treasure hunt modifier is the best thing ever done).

Mousebusters (2020 series and god I hope they play again).

9 members of Seventeen don jumpsuits, arm themselves with food-coloring water guns, and across a massive outdoor warehouse area must hunt and capture 4 "rats"- members born in the Year of the Rat- who are hiding throughout the area. Members can escape capture, be broken out of prison, and use a variety of special skills to try and evade the other 9 until time is up and the losing team is doused with flour.

Debate Night (I believe this week's episode of GOSE will mark the third time they've done this).

Members of Seventeen divide into two teams of 6, with member Wonwoo as moderator for a series of chaotic screaming matches intellectual debates covering important topics. Previous topics have included "Which is better, being immune to heat or cold?" and "Travel through time for 3 seconds or teleport for 10 and risk member Joshua coming back from the bathroom still peeing".

The Ad Lib Game (Done in 2020 and 2021 (2020 is funnier))

Members are given a scene to complete- such as planning video content or auditioning to become trainees at entertainment companies. They must keep the flow going and keep it ridiculous... but each member has on their shoulder or neck a TENS device (electric massage) that will start zapping them if they laugh. The goal is to not get zapped while also ensuring the other members are tortured as much as humanly possible.

Let's Go Seventeen (2021)

Members are let loose inside a gym with a massive inflatable obstacle course and must race against one another (and keep their pants on (harder than it sounds with these guys)) in order to determine who claims the top spot. And, in the epic finale, all 13 members attack at once.

13 Raiders (2021)

Members of Seventeen are taken to a deserted island (no really, it's an island with nothing on it) and must follow fragments of treasure maps to find the complete map and claim the treasure hidden on the island... Unless you're S.Coups and Jeonghan, in which case you immediately zero in on the picnic area and spend the entire time roasting meat and eating ramen while the other members scramble to find the treasure before their 3 hours are up.

The Tag (2020)

Members of Seventeen- some in groups and some individually- must enter an office building and search for missing keys in the dark. Only one key will unlock the front door and allow them to escape, but they will be hunted by three murderers within the building who are trying to take them captive (and apparently one ghost who only 2-3 members saw)...

--And 4 members will have to be rescued by the production director after accidentally breaking a door handle and trapping themselves in a supply closet. Because of course they did.

Four Wheeled Rider (2020)

Members go to a small cart track and compete in 4 wheel bike races mario-kart style, with powerups, boosts, and penalties carried out by the other members. Penalties include being attacked with squirt guns, having barricades (some of them human) put across the track, spinning in circles, or having to eat entire bananas before being allowed to continue the race.

All episodes can be found on the group's YouTube channel fully subbed. For most I recommend setting the play speed at 75%, they are chaos personified.

** Drinking Game Modifiers: Do a shot any time Hoshi mentions (even indirectly via gestures or wardrobe) tigers || Do a shot every time the captions mention Jun was a child actor.

Here’s my answers, first of all:

What was your favourite part of the show and why did it initially draw you in?

I remember when it first came out and they were showing previews on Nick. At the time, I didn’t watch much TV and only watched shows that happened to be on when I turned my TV on. Things have changed. After they constantly aired season one 24/7, I started to realize that I loved the show. Henry’s character especially drew me in. I like to say that I started watching it for the excitement of being a hero and the epic fighting, but I stayed because of Ray and Henry’s father-like relationship. I sadly didn’t discover the Tumblr fandom until over halfway through the show, but I’m thankful for all of you!

Who was your overall favourite member of Team Danger and why?

I’m so cliche and non-apologetic. It’s Henry. Every kid wants to be a hero, and Henry was around the same age as me when I started watching. I got to watch his character grow up and become this strong, brave, loyal superhero. Don’t get me wrong, Charlotte was always a close second. I loved her confidence and style. As the seasons progressed, I also loved how Jasper’s character matured. But until the end, I could relate to Henry so much. Him freaking out about what the heck he was supposed to do with his life? Yeah I’m close to graduating and kind of freaking out too. Henry Hart will always be my favorite.

Who was your favourite duo in the show (romantic or non-romantic)?

See I’m kind of weird. I never really had a ship? All the times that Henry went on a date in the earlier seasons, I was just like...this is going nowhere. So I have to say that if the writers were going to set Henry up with an endgame relationship, it should have been within Team Danger and revealed much earlier. But I actually didn’t mind that they didn’t give Henry a long-term love interest (canonically speaking). Why? Because they got to focus on the duo that started it all. The mentorship that blossomed into a friendship and a father/son relationship. Yup, I’m talking about Henry and Ray. I cannot express how much I love these two. In the beginning it was purely protective and professional, but it’s almost like Ray saw that Henry was growing up and let himself relax in the later seasons. I don’t care how ridiculous he can be, as we saw in the blimp scene, Ray loves Henry so dang much. And Henry cares about Ray just as much. I love seeing strong platonic relationships, especially when they are as comedic, passionate, and deep as Ray and Henry’s.

Seriously. I love this show. I love these characters. I love the actors. I love the relationships. I love the fandom. I love you guys. I’m not ok, but I feel good. It was time for this to end, but I won’t stop loving this show.

Did I read your tags incorrectly/am I dreaming or are you really planning an ancient greece AU 👀👀

indeed i am!! i’m still working out some of the details, but i’m almost ready to make a preview/summary post! 

as far as ancient greece AUs go, this one is a bit different! 

rather than being based on the pantheon and on the gods and mythology, as most are— and i love them— this one is more so based around the theatre of the athenian golden era— specifically sophoclean tragedy, is what i have planned, but i’m also planning on including some references to/inspiration from the homeric epics and the greek oral tradition as a whole! 

basically this an entirely self-indulgent AU that allows me to project my classics bitch energy onto my two fave boys

the general premise is that eliott’s an actor/playwright/general artist, acting and studying under sophocles. he travels from athens to visit the oracle of delphi. she gives him a mysterious and cryptic prophecy— as she often does.

he arrives at the first rehearsal for sophocles’ newest play. sophocles introduces the chorus that will be accompanying the actors, which lucas is part of. lucas— along with the rest of the chorus— are young, off-duty soldiers. eliott knows with one look that lucas is the boy that was mentioned in his prophecy. 

he then spends quite some time trying to figure out if he’s drawn to lucas because of godly words or because of far more human things.

This week has been pretty long,  and not too great. I’ve been up and down with nausea for the last few days, which has made working a bit difficult. I’ve been trying to push through when I can, but it seems to hit me at random times, and I it’s hard for me not to feel guilty when I have to leave early or cancel plans I made with other people. I think it’s also being made worse by the fact that I’m stressed out. Now that I have the goal of a paper looming over me, every experiment I do feels more pressure than the last, especially if one doesn’t work out the way I want it to. It’s hard to know when to stop and when to keep going if things aren’t working. Part of me gets to the end of a bad week and feels like “Ok I tried my best and I will approach this again next week.” while the other part of me feels like “I haven’t got anything to show for this week, so I need to put in extra time over the weekend and try to make up for that.”

Sometimes I let the first thought win, sometimes it’s the second. I really am not sure which is the “right” way forward. On one hand, I have been working a lot to try to move my project forward, and I recognize that I need time to recharge. On the other hand, I know I have a deadline, and every week that passes where I’m not moving closer to it gives me stressful feelings. *Sigh*, if anyone has advice for how to regulate these two emotions, please help me out! I don’t want to be a slacker or get behind in my deadlines/disappoint my advisor, but I also get really annoyed when I put in a lot of hours and then also have to give up my weekend. The fear of failure didn’t crush me this hard when I didn’t have a hard deadline. Trying out new things and troubleshooting is fun for me, until it feels like I need to be on a road somewhere and I have yet to leave my driveway.

In other news, my partner has been away for the past week, and it’s been a bit lonely in the apartment. I’ve enjoyed the quiet time, but I also feel very odd without him. It’s weird because I consider myself pretty independent, but whenever we are apart it always gets me a bit down/lonely feeling, so I guess I’m dependent after all! I just feel like my schedule gets all messed up and I lose my desire to cook and do things as much. I’ve been trying to keep busy with friends, but it’s been a little hard the last few days with me feeling sick. On the plus side, I’ve rediscovered my GameBoy Color and have been replaying Pokemon Blue, which has brought me so much joy! I didn’t realize how much I’d missed it! 

Also random... I’ve entered the world of sci-twitter. Not under this blog, but as a real human. And I’m terrified! It’s hard to know what to post, and most of the time I just like other people’s tweets. But at the same time I don’t really have anyone to show me the “etiquette” of twitter. Like...is it ok to “like” something that one of your followers has retweeted, even if you don’t know the original person who tweeted the post? Does the answer to that make a difference if the original person is more famous, or if it’s a regular person with not a lot of followers (so my like would be more creepy?). How come you can’t preview twitter posts?! I finally worked up the courage to post an image I took on the microscope today, that I had tweaked a little in photoshop to make it into a desktop background, and twitter downsampled the image or something and the photoshop edits showed up in the background, even though they were not visible on my computer screen! I deleted it, but felt so embarrassed, especially as a scientist, because we are taught that editing photos = BAD. For art purposes I believe it is ok, but there is still that little part of me that was horrified that people could see it. I got so stressed from that that I think it turned my stomach even more, and I had to take a walk to calm down. Sounds stupid, but I was sweating! Because not only was the photo looking bad, I had tagged someone in it who had release the look-up table I used to color-code the image, and that was also a big move for me since I don’t know him except on twitter! So as soon as I posted it, he “liked” it, and then I deleted it and tried again, only to realize that the edits STILL showed up. He like the second post. Now I was starting to panic. Deleted that one too and then just never tried again. Part of me is wondering if it’s possible to “like” anything that mentions your twitter handle? His likes were pretty instantaneous for both posts, which was kind of weird. Either way, I was mortified and it will be a long time before I post something of my own again. At least, something that has to do with my research. 

So there you have it. I’m a nervous ball of anxiety and loneliness this week! Looking forward to tomorrow being Friday and just being able to go home and relax a bit.

genuinely debating going through all of the objects in sims and making a list of what each kind of object has what tags.

like. i already have a text file with that started. like the section for mirrors is set up like this:

(the reason i have the brackets is bc i have it saved as a css file so i can fold the sections and make it easier to navigate)

its split into Comfort, Surfaces, Storage, Entertainment, Electronics, Plumbing, Appliances, Lights, & Decorative

comfort, surfaces, plumbing are the most complete.

entertainment, decorative are the least.

HOWEVER i cannot for the life of me figure out what the fuck makes specifc things have a venue tag and others not. Dining Tables? some of them have Wedding venue, some do not. almost EVERY freestanding sink has the Karaoke venue tag.

what decides if a sink/bathtub/shower/toilet has the Off The Grid tag? i thought it was just like old timey ones but nope!! only TWO bathtubs have the tag. The Woodworked one and the Mo' Koa Wood Bath from Island living. NOTE: this is not including shower/bathtub combos. only THREE of those have the tag (Under the Sea Clawfoot from base game, Sheer Will Clawfoot from vampires, and Epic DIY Shower from strangerville) normal showers?? FOUR. 3 of them are unsurprising. two from Outdoor Retreat and one from Island Living. the only basegame shower that has the tag is the Post Modern Shower Stall which doesn't look like the other three at all!!!

if a chair has the Dining Chair function tag, it does not have the Energy tag and vice versa. Shower/bath combos ONLY have the Shower function tag. only SOME plant deco uses Pot or Vase function tags, sometimes both. what decides if an item has Environment Score +/- 1/2 or the Ecofootprint. what makes something a pedestal.

literally what. if there was an easier way to LOOK at this shit, i wouldn't be so frustrated. but NO. object previewer. EXCEPT BASE GAME ITEMS AREN'T ALWAYS GROUPED WITH ALL THEIR SWATCHES. i want to rip my hair out why am i doing this

1. favorite fic you wrote this year

It’s so hard to pick just one omg. I had a lot of fun with a lot of things this year. If I can say Duality as a whole, that’s my answer, because I’ve put so much into that series and I love so much about it. Honorable mention goes to “Sorry, Who Are You?” my childhood friends Klance AU featuring Keith with prosopagnosia (face-blindness). I projected like hell onto Keith and I still really love it

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

The entirety of the Someplace Like Home finale, but (spoilers) specifically chapter 26, either Akira’s “Hollywood lied to me” line or Meri’s “Get your quiznaking hands off her!” I’d been building to all those reunions for so long, and it was so damn satisfying to finally get there.

11. shortest wip of the year

Shortest WIP that has at least one chapter published? That would be “Dungeons & Dwarf Stars,” the Duality side story where the cast plays various tabletop RPGs. It’s about 7.5k right now, and while I haven’t started the next chapter yet, I recently DM’d for the first time ever (hello, new special interest) and if that becomes a regular thing, I have a feeling I’ll suddenly find myself in possession of a bunch of new inspiration for that story.

In terms of unpublished WIPs, my shortest currently at 2.5k is A Genealogy of Demons, the sequel to Handbook of Demonology. I had been working on Genealogy for the Supernova Bang, but I dropped that bang because of... well, life in general conspiring against me. I’m sill working on the fic, but at my own pace. Don’t have a definite date yet for when it’ll start going up, but probably in the first half of 2018.

13. favorite writing song/artist/album of this year

For 90% of the year, I defaulted to my video game & movie scores Pandora station, but just recently I’ve switched over to The Black Piper’s Kaladin album. (Holy shit) and the Leverage soundtrack. Kaladin is simply the best for epic scenes, and Leverage is so full of energy and nostalgia.

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write 

The Monster in the Mirror. I mean, I knew I was going to do something for Shatt Week, but then season 3 dropped and.... Yeah, I wrote 42k in, like, 10 days? Granted, I had no other projects going on at the time, but still. That idea came out of nowhere and swept me right off my feet.

21. most memorable comment/review 

There have been a lot of great comments. I save some of them in my inbox on AO3 for when I’m having a crisis of self-confidence. The ones that really stick with me, though, are from people who comment because something in the fic resonated with them on a personal level. Keith’s face-blindness in “Sorry, Who Are You?”; Keith’s touch-aversion in my Heith Week fic, “You’re the Reason I Believe in Something I Don’t Know”; and so many on Duality, be it about neurotype, disability, gender/pronouns, orientation, ect. Comments like that are the best, because in all honesty, that’s a big part of the reason I write. So much of my fic is me projecting (especially re: identity/representation that I don’t see anywhere else, or not often enough) and it means a lot to hear that I’ve filled that hole for other people, at least a little.

22. events you participated in this year

Starting from the beginning: I had a couple of pinch hits for last year’s Voltron: Legendary December! event, along with the two fics I did for Fandom Tr*mps Hate. Then I did Heith Week and Shatt Week in the summer, followed by a Zethrid/Narti fic for the Lunar Ladies Exchange. That’s everything that’s been posted so far.

Events I worked on this year that will post in 2018:

Horror Bang: (gen) Hunk- and Pidge-centric suspense/thriller fic that should be up sometime in February (I don’t have the specific posting date yet.)

Galra Bang: (lowkey Antolivan) Kolivan-centric fic that also features the rest of the Blade, including Keith. December was brutal on a lot of people in the bang, so the posting is getting pushed back some, but I’d expect it’ll still be sometime in February or early March.

25. a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read

Just one? Nope, you know what? Three people asked for this one, so have 3:

The Last Aspect by Spazzcat (@vldaspect) - Ongoing. Time-travel fix-it AU. So good. Klance and Shatt. This fic has great action, lots of emotional impact, and a couple of great twists to keep things interesting. Honestly, if you like epic Voltron AUs (and if you read my stuff, you probably do) you’ll love this fic, so go check it out!

Stardust, Silk and Steel by CalicoTomcat - Ongoing. Hasn’t been updated in a while, so may remain incomplete, but what is out is so worth reading. Canon divergence where the wormhole at the end of season 1 dumps Pidge out near Earth. Lots of great worldbuilding (and a kickass Mama Holt, which you know I love.) Intense and somewhat graphic violence at times, so mind the tags, but a great ride. Gen with a few small hints of a potential future Hidge in the latest chapters. Very much Pidge-centric.

The Lost Paladin by prettyshiroic (AnalystProductions) - Complete, long oneshot. After the war, Keith leaves before another family leaves him. Years later, he runs into Lance and starts to wonder if he made a mistake. This fic. Goddamn. Incredibly emotional, literally made me cry. Finished reading it in my car after work because I couldn’t make myself drive home without getting to the resolution. Gen.

What is this story? Are there previews? Any sampling at all? So curious. Best wishes*

I’ve sat on this ask for two weeks, trying to decide how to respond. My Achilles heel as a writer is that I am terrified—absolutely terrified—of sharing a work in progress. Some years back I posted the first couple pages from the novel version of Katherine’s Diary, and I think I posted a page from the screenplay as well. Try looking under tagged/katherine’s-diary.

What is this story? Well I guess you could classify it as both a historical/romantic epic and coming-of-age tale. I always have a hard time describing the story to people because it’s so complex and can’t be summed up in a couple sentences. Here are a few points:

- The protagonist is Katherine DeSilva, who we follow from ages 14 to 27. The screenplay has an ensemble cast but Katherine remains the central character in both versions.

- Setting is early ’70s Seattle, in the aftermath of the Boeing Bust. The economic depression is a catalyst for much of what happens in the story.

- Katherine is very close to her father, a commercial fisherman. He goes missing at sea and is never found.

- Although Katherine was sort of a wild child to begin with, her father’s disappearance makes her act out even more. Her antics get her kicked out of the parochial school she attends.

- Katherine’s mother (an obnoxious social climber whom Katherine despises) learns of a fancy private school in an affluent area of Seattle and immediately works to finagle Katherine in.

- This school, which thinks of itself as the West Coast’s answer to Deerfield, would never accept Katherine’s crazy pot-smoking ass under normal circumstances, but lagging enrollment since the Boeing Bust forces them to lower their standards; she gets in.

- The bane of every pupil at this school is Mr. Wilson, a math teacher and pompous asshole. He’s basically the schoolmaster from Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

- Katherine shows up late to her first class with Mr. Wilson and they hate each other at first sight. But since he’s a man with a penis and she’s a pretty girl with daddy issues, things get interesting.

The screenplay and the novel are very different from each other. The screenplay has a third-person narrative and jumps back and forth between the past and present (a la Forrest Gump, Titanic, et al.), with the diary playing sort of a MacGuffin role. The novel OTOH is the diary; it is set entirely in the past (1973-1986) and since it’s Katherine’s chronicling of her own experiences, it uses a first-person narrative.

I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus from this project but your message has galvanized me to get back to it. Thank you so much for that. ❤️

Give AO3 a Chance

Back in January, Odylism put out this call to fanfic writers in the community she writes for (the Campaign Podcast--go check it out guys). The TLDR message was: Please archive on AO3.  Tumblr is ephemeral. AO3 is a bit more permanent. The rest of her message is below:

What is AO3?

AO3 is the Archive of Our Own. It is the big pan-fandom fan controlled fan fiction archive. Essentially, anyone can go and post fanfic there for others to read and enjoy. It is controlled by a non-profit, the Organization for Transformative Works.

Why are you begging me?

Because I love fandom and fic. Anyone who’s been in fandom a while can tell you of the great amounts of fic that have been lost over the years. Fanfic archives have evaporated. LJ has blacked out content they didn’t like. Geocities came tumbling down. Tumblr is what we’re on now, but anyone who’s tried to go back and search for something six months later can tell you that tumblr is hard to pin down. If you don’t have something bookmarked, it can be impossible to find again. Even if you did bookmark it, you have to pray that person didn’t change their URL.

AO3 was established with the purpose of having a central repository for fanfic that’s stable. It’s been the major repository of fanfic for a while now.

Why should I archive? It’s just dumb/less than 100 words/totally silly/terribly written.

Fanfic is important. Your fanfic is important. I couldn’t begin to describe all of the silly junk I’ve written or read over the years. Not everything has to be perfect serious canon longfic. Each fic, from epic to drabble, paints a picture of the fandom at the time when it was written. AO3 helps us capture that history. I want to be able to go back and read fic (both the serious stuff and the silly AUs) long after Tumblr has gone the way of the dodos. AO3 also has the benefit of being searchable. If I’m in the mood for a certain story, I can go on AO3 and search for exactly that.

What do I need to do to archive on AO3?

For those who want serious instructions, AO3 has an official FAQ that’s helpful.

First, you need to register for an account. If you’re a chameleon person who changes their handle with every new moon, that’s okay. You can add additional pseudonyms after you register. You can go here to register. It does require an invitation code, but they send those out fairly quickly. If you’re not willing to wait, you can usually find someone on here who has one laying around.

Next, you need to post your fic on AO3. When posting a story to AO3, you have to pick a title and tags. Some tags are obvious (characters, relationships, warnings). If one of those tags is missing from the archive, you can add it. The additional tags can take some nuance, but are great for indicating tropes or trigger warnings. AO3 allows users to format their stories using HTML or a rich text editor. I’m an old and always just put together my HTML myself, so I can’t speak to how good/bad the rich text editor is. Once you’ve formatted, you will be shown a preview of the story before you post so you can check everything one last time.

Last, you wait. People can give feedback on AO3 in two ways: kudos and comments. Kudos are a little button people can press at the end of a chapter or story to signal that they enjoyed the work. Comments are when people leave actual written comments on your story. AO3 doesn’t have a great comment culture, but it isn’t any worse than tumblr.

I don’t write fan fiction, but I want to comment/leave kudos/bookmark stories.

Great! You can comment and leave kudos without an account, but I really recommend getting one. Some users don’t allow anon comments or restrict their stories to only logged in users. Bookmarking is only available to registered users.

I’m sorry about that. Obviously, I have a lot of feelings about fic and the preservation of fandom. Being on AO3 is a great way to preserve fic and make it searchable.

I’ve been seeing a lot of small fics for Stranger Things not being crossposted to AO3 and I don’t know if that’s for lack of an account or disinterest in posting. I appreciate all the amazing fic that I’ve had the privilege to read on Tumblr, but Tumblr doesn’t allow for bookmarking, save my personal bookmarks (and I know I’m not the only person who has experienced the sinking feeling of clicking on a blog after someone’s changed their url or deleted their blog). In an addition to the original post, “Tumblr is a good way to meet friends and spread the word about new things, but a terrible terrible way to post and archive fanfic. Who knows if tumblr will even be here in a few years, being sold to new companies and subject to new corporate mandates.”
