FIRST READING IS HAPPENING NOW PEOPLE!!!!!!!
THE TREATY PRINCIPLES BILL IS BEING PRESENTED TO THE HOUSE TOMORROW!!!!!!!
EDIT: Here's a link with more info on the Bill and it's contents and breaches!
This matters to EVERYONE in our country! If you're Māori this is about our LITERAL existence, if you're Pākehā, tauiwi, tangata Tiriti this concerns you because Tiriti is what gives you the privilege of existing on this whenua! The Waitangi Tribunal has already said this Bill will be the biggest Waitangi breach ever. YOU have a responsibility to do something.
ACT, our coalition government, and the Ministry of Justice have been intentionally keeping this bill under the wraps. Mad mihi to the MoJ analyst who leaked that draft though (I'm sure they got sacked if not massive repercussions).
What we know so far is that Te Pāti Māori, Green Party, and Labour WILL NOT be voting for this and that ACT, NZ First, and National WILL be voting for this tomorrow. NZ First and National have said that they WILL NOT support this Bill after its first reading so it will go to Select Committee and then die at first reading.
National and NZ First have said they'll only support this Bill to first reading (thankfully) but there is always the chance of closed door promises & favours and we still need to advocate for this disgusting bill to die.
I'll post more about submissions when they open for Select Committee but I'm happy to help answer questions or help with that and the process.
But the racist idiots to email and drill in that you DO NOT want this Bill are...
ACT MPs
1. David Seymour (Email: [email protected] ) (the one bigoted brain cell behind this bill)
2. Brooke Van Velden ([email protected])
3. Nicole McKee ([email protected])
4. Todd Stephenson ([email protected])
5. Andrew Hoggard ([email protected])
6. Karen Chhour ([email protected])
7. Mark Cameron ([email protected])
8. Simon Court ([email protected])
9. Parmjeet Parmat ([email protected])
10. Laura Trask ([email protected])
11. Cameron Luxton ([email protected])
AND
- Prime Minister Christopher Luxon ([email protected])
- Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters ([email protected])
If you're able to participate with any part of the hīkoi please do and please be safe!!!!

For anyone who may not have heard, there's a big Hui happening this Saturday in Ngāruawāhia, organised by the Kiingitanga. It's open to all Maori, and aims to give a space where as many different voices as possible can discuss how we respond to the government's plans together.
They've put all the details and agenda into an app called whova. Here's a link to the web portal (have to make an account and register for the event), or you can get the app and use these details.
The main part of the day is dedicated to five sessions with different focuses, with a mix of speakers, panellists, and open-floor discussion.
This is the first time I've seen something like this happening, and I'm keen to be a part of it. I hope that it'll be a helpful part in giving us a united direction to push forward in, or at least an opportunity to meet some like minds.

There's a nationwide protest/activation for Toitū the Tiriti scheduled for this Thursday! I haven't got any more details (unsurprisingly lol) for now, but will try to share once I do!

YES! Our corrupt government (I'm from Aotearoa/NZ too) is taking rights from all but the rich white folk! They are desecrating our founding documents, damaging our efforts to support indigenous people and languages (Māori people and language). They are using the fast-tracking method to pass bills and laws that were used by the previous government to address COVID (i.e putting us in lockdown and saving hundreds of thousands of lives) and using it to introduce racist, sexist, abelist, and LGBTQ+phobic bills and laws WITHOUT needing public approval!!
THEY ARE KILLING OUR LAND, OUR COMMUNITIES, OUR HOMES, OUR PEOPLE, OUR HEALTH, AND OUR LANGUAGES!!! THEIR ACTIONS ARE KILLING WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE. THEY ARE HURTING US AND EVERYTHING WE STAND FOR, PURELY FOR FINANCIAL GAIN!
Our political parties' leaders (the ones currently in power) are avoiding having to pay taxes, and using their political influence to gain power over things! They are stripping away Māori rights by not honoring The Treaty of Waitingi (Te Tiriti o Waitingi) this includes land, language, healthcare, safety, security etc. We have one of the most fragile ecosystems here in NZ and they are not only avoiding creating laws to protect it, but they are actively trying to harm it!!
While all the focus is on America and their upcoming election, we aren't focusing on our own country's issues as much as we need to be. It has now been almost a year and they've done even more harmful things to us.
Our country is dying. There's almost nothing we can do. Fuck the government and TOITŪ TE TIRITI!!!!
USA please listen to me: the price of “teaching them a lesson” is too high. take it from New Zealand, who voted our Labour government out in the last election because they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted and got facism instead.
Trans rights are being attacked, public transport has been defunded, tax cuts issued for the wealthy, they've mass-defunded public services, cut and attacked the disability funding model, cut benefits, diverted transport funding to roads, cut all recent public transport subsidies, cancelled massive important infrastructure projects like damns and ferries (we are three ISLANDS), fast tracked mining, oil, and other massive environmentally detrimental projects and gave the power the to approve these projects singularly to three ministers who have been wined and dined by lobbyists of the companies that have put the bids in to approve them while one of the main minister infers he will not prioritise the protection of endangered species like the archeys frog over mining projects that do massive environmental harm. They have attacked indigenous rights in an attempt to negate the Treaty of Waitangi by “redefining it”; as a backup, they are also trying to remove all mentions of the treaty from legislation starting with our Child Protection laws no longer requiring social workers to consider the importance of Maori children’s culture when placing those children; when the Waitangi Tribunal who oversees indigenous matters sought to enquire about this, the Minister for Children blocked their enquiry in a breach of comity that was condemned in a ruling — too late to do anything — by our Supreme Court. They have repealed labour protections around pay and 90 day trials, reversed our smoking ban, cancelled our EV subsidy, cancelled our water infrastructure scheme that would have given Maori iwi a say in water asset management, cancelled our biggest city’s fuel tax, made our treasury and inland revenue departments less accountable, dispensed of our Productivity Commission, begun work on charter schools and military boot camps in an obvious push towards privatisation, cancelled grants for first home buyers, reduced access to emergency housing, allowed no cause evictions, cancelled our Maori health system that would have given Maori control over their own public medical care and funding, cut funding of services like budgeting advice and food banks, cancelled the consumer advocacy council, cancelled our medicine regulations, repealed free prescriptions, deferred multiple hospital builds, failed to deliver on pre-election medical promises, reversed a gun ban created in response to the mosque shootings, brought back three strikes = life sentence policy, increased minimum wage by half the recommended amount, cancelled fair pay for disabled workers, reduced wheelchair services, reversed our oil and gas exploration ban, cancelled our climate emergency fund, cut science research funding including climate research, removed limits on killing sea lions, cut funding for the climate change commission, weakened our methane targets, cancelled Significant National Areas protections, have begun reversing our ban on live exports. Much of this was passed under urgency.
It’s been six months.

Hīkoi for te Tiriti starts on Monday 11th at Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reigna) and ends in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) on Tuesday 19th.
There will be activations throughout Aotearoa during this time, including Te Waipounamu (South Island). This post has details for Te Waipounamu activations. For more information on the hīkoi through Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island) and the Toitū te Tiriti kaupapa look at this link.
This document has also been created with Accessibility information for the hīkoi here.
Please show up however you can! Participate in the hīkoi, show up to activations, contact MPs, start thinking about submissions for Select Committee, make an effort with te reo, show up for and support your Māori friends. It is such an insult and so discriminatory that our Government have introduced this in the first place. This matters for Māori, Pākehā and tauiwi. If you are Pākehā or tauiwi you have the privilege of living on this whenua and benefiting from colonisation, it is the bare minimum requirement for you to show up.
When you're at activations please make sure to be safe and look after each other! Stay hydrated, keep water with you, have sunscreen, sun hats, sunglasses, rain jackets, masks, snacks if you need them etc.

If you live in Aotearoa and want to show your support for te Tiriti, your appreciation of this document as foundational for living in respectful relationship with each other, and to protest the govt undermining the Tiriti principles, values, and the tinorangatiratanga of Māori (which they've been doing! In a bunch of ways including the Bill above!).
Please consider joining the hīkoi mō te Tiriti, organised by Toitū te Tiriti.
It is going ahead as planned Nov 10-19 as a nationwide activation, despite David Seymour moving up the timeline for the Treaty Principles Bill being presented (this means the last day of the hīkoi, which ends at Paremata - Parliament - no longer coincides with the day the bill is presented).
Resources:
Kaupapa and where to donate in support of the hīkoi
FB post with each day's schedule to read and share.
Hīkoi organiser quote-focused article for context
Article incl links for more info about the threat that the Treaty Principles Bill presents
Together for Te Tiriti website - lots of resources, info and more actions you can take
I know most of tumblr is thinking about the USA right now. but fuck the nz government right now too. tomorrow, the treaty principles bill, the 'worst, most comprehensive breach of Te Tiriti in modern times' is being introduced to parliament early, because there were activations planned country wide and the cowards decided to pull it forwards. fuck this government. a friend of mine had to go home early, crying. I've been in shock all day since it came out.
check on your Māori friends, e hoa mā. see what they need. see how you can help. everyday, we see and experience racism. from people around us, up to our government. community care will save us.

Aotearoa has just elected the most regressive government in decades, if not a literal century. They're not only attempting to re-exclude Māori and our language, but re-write the founding document of our country.
I am so angry, frustrated and scared.
So here's some art about it.

Temuera Morrison is starring in a new film this year. Go check out the trailer!
The plot is set during the time of Te riri  Pākehā/Ngā pakanga o Aotearoa or the New Zealand Wars.
This film is more relevant than ever, but in case you've missed it, the actual government in New Zealand has started a crusade against the Māori.
It's a lot of information to try to wrap up here, but if you are interested in knowing more about what's going on in New Zealand, look for toitū te tiriti, and toitū te tiriti hashtags on social media. I recommend you to follow Eru Kapa-Kingi (tewharewhakaaro) on instagram.
