Loved your comment about Mia finding a bad guy! She wants to help, but she doesn’t ask open-ended questions. She makes a narrative!

She makes me break out in (metaphorical) hives. It isn't even that she's wrong for calling Dean out on lashing out, it's that she basically goes "you're angry and this is a you problem" rather than?? Clock that a) he has trouble with emotional regulation and b) try and figure out why that is. The point of therapy is to identify problems and give people the toolbox to handle said problems. It's not a buzzword session where the person you're paying to counsel you validates every single behavior you exhibit.

And the thing is, we know that Dean doesn't even totally dislike therapy or think he doesn't have issues. In season five (forget the episode name oops) he literally does open up to a therapist at a mental hospital. And in the previous session he has with her before opening up he makes an off-color joke to Sam about being "thraped" after she asks about his dad, meaning HE KNOWS HE HAS ISSUES REGARDING THAT.

So Idk I hate what that entire episode does for us as a fandom, bc now we have people who take the word of a bad therapist regarding how Dean would react to actual good therapy and therapists as gospel truth, and also that Sam was One Hundred Percent Morally Correct to force two unwilling participants into a FAMILY therapy session when they barely knew each other.

And the fact that Mia can't even clock anyone's dynamic bc she avoids asking actual useful questions in the session is just. Deeply irritating. I've learned more about people in a goddamn icebreaker session than she learned about the Winchester family dynamic.

Honestly, the writers could have written Dean to be 100% wrong in that situation, and I still would have found how Mia handled that session with distaste.

Not to project my own experiences onto a piece of fiction, but goddamn I remember one time I was unloading on my therapist about some really intense family drama, and her response was to a) ask questions and b) when she finally gave me advice she literally prefaced it with "I don't know your family personally, I only speak to you, and this is the first I'm hearing about these problems, so please take what I say as advice, not total truth." And that was after an entire year of seeing me weekly/biweekly.

I can't imagine deciding that this One Guy is the bad guy in the first session with a group of clients, when the Other Guy is the one completely dominating the session. And then telling the One Guy that it's literally his problem to deal with and him being upset is him "taking out his issues on his family" or whatever, when it's the other guy who dragged them all to therapy in the first place when they didn't want to go (which Imo feels more like "taking issues out" on the family than the first guy who's grieving. But whatever).

Literally her only job in that session was to sit, ask questions, and figure out how to best help her clients. Instead, one of her clients commits suicide very shortly after. Great work.
