I wanted to thank you for opening my mind; I used to be all about Archie and defend the edginess the series would incorporate. While I still enjoy that stuff, I'm not gonna demand Sega for Sonic to carry a gun or include Sally Acorn in the next game.

I've come to appreciate Game!Sonic and his Game! friends a lot more because of your insights. Rest assured I can still think for myself and don't take all your opinions as gospel (i.e. I will continue to ship Sonadow and I continue to love my edgy son, Nine). This side of the Fandom is more rational and accepting, making it comfortable for me to share my gratitude to you guys.

I'm sharing this now because I've been crafting my own AU/cartoon/adaptation, your analyses of Sonic and Eggman serve as a guide to keep them in character.

If this comes off as too dramatic, it's because my appreciation for you and your blog is too much to contain in one sentence.

It's not too dramatic at all. In fact, after what has honestly been a pretty crappy day, this really put a smile on my face.

I'm just a fellow fan like everyone else when all is said and done. I don't claim to be the master authority on character portrayals in this franchise. (I know I've joked about it feeling like I'm the only one who knows how Eggman works in the fandom, but that's exactly what it is: a joke). However, I'm honored that you've been taking my perspective into account for your own portrayals for Sonic and Eggman, and I wish you the best of luck on your project. :) If you ever want to share details via PM, you're free to do so.

I don't take issue with fans who simply like whichever adaptations, or even those who outright prefer certain adaptations or at least parts of them. After all, I enjoy AoStH and the movies despite their obvious differences, and my favourite portrayal of Metal Sonic is still the one from the OVA. The important thing is knowing that even if you ultimately prefer an adaptation over the games, the games will always remain the heart of the franchise, and that ought to be respected either way.

I like to imagine that, during the Console War days, Sonic was the one who was all in on his and Mario’s rivalry and was constantly pestering him with “ha ha my games are better suck it grandpa”. Meme time!! I replaced most of the images from the original. Dr. Jester comes from a strange mix of Archie, Sonic X and game canon. There are so many characters he hasn't met.

I think some of these relationships need more context.

Sonic - His loathsome nephew, potentially. (Prerequisite: Chuckster marriage. 😹) As for curiosity, he knew about Sonic and his extraordinary feats before facing him in battle. This curiosity came with a twinge of fear. He feared the kind of power it was said Sonic could tap into. He simply had to witness it firsthand! And he did.

Unbeknownst to him, he almost killed Sonic in their real first meeting by tossing him and Neon into a lake. Ah, almost.

Tails - Respects his skills as an engineer and his ability to outwit Eggman. Dr. Jester captured him the first time they met. He's Sonic's brother, so technically he should see him as family too. Loathsome nephew #2.

Shadow - Yes, Dr. Jester knew Shadow. Hypothetically, if Shadow came to Dr. Jester claiming to be Eggman's android, Dr. Jester would then respond by giving him a nice gash across the abdomen. Androids don't bleed. But Shadow died so that will never happen. (He doesn't know he's still alive.)

Rouge - Friendly rivalry. They met before the events of SA2. I very much wanted to mark Rouge as a friend but neither can trust the other. Dr. Jester expects betrayal. He still likes her. She has style. And guess what? They both love pretty rocks!

Charmy - A bee that looks like Kandy! And he's alive?! How curious!

Eggman - He feels every emotion for Eggman.

Sir Charles/Uncle Chuck - No notes, just Chuckster!

Dmitri - This relationship is intense but not romantic. I just really like the red circle. It's eye-catching. They're physically affectionate, which might sound odd considering Dmitri is only a cyborg head encased in a glass orb. He does have bionic tendrils though! I call this ship Jestri.

Metal Sonic - Never met. I'm very sad to admit that. Dr. Jester would tease Eggman about Metal Sonic looking like him. "He looks more like me so he must be my son."

Jules - Never met. Again, Chuckster (their relationship) would have to be serious before Chuck even considers introducing Dr. Jester to his beloved family.

E-123 Omega - Dr. Jester doesn't mind his quest for revenge, as long as Omega will allow him to step aside before he starts blasting Eggman's robots.

Chaos - In my own version of Sonic Adventure, Dr. Jester's Chaos (the one from his world) and the canon Chaos became one. A Chaos-Chaos. My Chaos had control of the body first and lost control by Chaos 4. One Chaos was driven by hatred, the other by fear. Dr. Jester wanted nothing to do with them. He skipped the final showdown.

In the Archie comics, there were these retcon events that introduced new continuities. In the Post-Super Genesis Wave timeline, Charles is no longer related to Sonic due to SEGA mandates--but he wasn't completely discarded.

I imagine Uncle Chuck would have no memory of Dr. Jester in the new continuity. There would be no Jules, or Dmitri. Dr. Jester would remember what was lost. I could torment myself and my OCs with this sadness. Call it the New Game+!

Nah, I won't do that. It's easier to play along with canon and rewrite some memories.

In Sonic 2 he's mostly a sidekick but also the main character in a way. He's the main character in the same way my aunt is. Like technically he only exists in relation to my dad but like she's so cool and therefore the main character.

Tails fulfills the strange role in this game of being between two figures in Sonic and Knuckles (the titular rivals).

In a way Tails is like Hillary Clinton because she was stuck between Obama and Bill Clinton which undermined her individual identity. Unlike Hillary no need to investigate Tails' emails cause I think nobody else in mobius has an email so it's just Tails and all his alts which is wild to imagine.

For those who have sad pathetic worthless lives and don't know the plot: Tails goes to an island, finds a bunch of minecart tracks and then fights Witchcart and her squad of goons. In a way, Tails is once again like Hillary Clinton. You see, the reason this game is seen as irrelevant is because it was less successful than the previous games but, just like Hillary, it's of similar quality to some of the Sonic (Joe Biden) led titles (only Sonic CD all of the other ones clear but CD is ass). Unrelated what even were in those emails like can Tails recover Hillary's emails I want to know I'm curious

Sonic Adventure means 3D Tails!

I love Sonic Adventure Tails.

First of all the narrative: Tails is trying to break out of his assumed role of being just a sidekick. Given that all Tails really was up to this point was Sonic's little buddy the direction Sonic Adventure took was huge for the beautiful path Tails' character went down.

The arc that Tails' story in this game starts creates the arc that attached me to this character from the outset. I personally have always found it hard to see myself as capable of doing things because others can accomplish things that feel impossible to me, even if I have a similar skill set to them. Seriously, Tails' theme from this game is one of my favorite Sonic songs period because it just reminds me to be confident in my abilities.

Second the gameplay: Tails' gameplay serves to show what the story is showing by having the player use Tails' unique skillset to outpace Sonic, the "fastest thing alive" which indicates his ability in spite of not having the confidence he is yet to find.

I don't like Sonic Adventure as a whole a lot but Tails is the highlight of the game to me. I like the way Tails is developed to blossom into a new beautiful character throughout the game. Everytime I play I look forward to Tails' campaign.

Sonic Adventure 2

so first of all the mech levels are fine you're just bad

So narratively it's just kinda more of adventure Tails but now with a cool mech. It's like when the lizard people attach their skin suits so the cspan footage won't record the truth about our government. One time I went in to meet my senator and he turned his head 180 degrees to look at me. I saw his eyes blink sideways while he was getting his skinsuit zipped on from the aide in the office who also was probably in the Illuminati to honest. I would speak his name but he put a curse on me that if I speak the truth to what I saw my ancestors will all have the feeling that they are perpetually walking over hot coals, even when not walking! Normally I'd drop the "jokes on you I'm gay" but I don't know if this applies to cousins and that would be a fucked up thing to do to my cousins.

Anyways Tails

yeah he's good in this game strong character shows his smart side while keeping the strength he got for himself in Adventure 1. I'd give him a (Sonic Adventure) 2/2

Lowkey when playing this game I didn't have it in me to not go on the Tails routes for levels but sometimes I had to and wanted to apologize so I just doubled my goat sacrifice total which is rough cause I also have to sacrifice at least like 1 goat to the high demon Nahadareth who will also make my urethra explode. Overall I'm going to use this platform to say I think Tails and Shadow have such a funny little dynamic. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) - XBOX360/PS3

Fun fact this was my first mainline Sonic game. Thankfully not my actual first Sonic game, except for the fact that my true first Sonic game was Sonic Chronicles.

Anyways I don't remember him doing very much cause Sonic just fucks off with Elise for like all of his route but I love dummy ring bomb.

Dummy ring bomb is great because it lets Tails both bomb the enemies and my PS3 simultaneously because Sonic 06 can't handle loading in one more asset let alone 100. Seriously what did he do? His role is almost as easy to forget as the fact that the chemtrails are still being spread by the government through the airplanes. You know Sonic 06 was a great perfectly functional game and then on release day the government put out twice the chemtrails cause George Bush though Silver the Hedgehog would make the kids gay. As a kid exposed to Silver the Hedgehog early on, he was right I guess.

Okay so like fun fact the next Sonic media I know about in continuity is Boom (and I forgot about Generations and don't feel like going back so fuck you specifically actually) and like I'm good so we're going straight to "NEXT"ITERATION SONICFOCERS

Jokes aside my favorite line in this game is that in the opening cutscene Silver(?) says "Tails... Tails has just lost it" so apparently my boy went insane like he got MKUltra'd and then got that instant fast therapy off camera and was good and chill by the time we saw him again. Some say his activation word is Zavok. My activation word is "the" because the government just really hated me in particular when I got MKUltra'd. But I'm built different so I've just been exclusively speaking and only listening to foreign languages for all these years. I still don't know any languages but like I listen to them and make some sounds which is cool I guess.

I love Frontier Tails. like as much as Adventure Tails. Unfortunately doing the "sincere analysis" bit twice kinda kills the vibe so I just gotta bullshit I guess and if you're still reading sunk cost fallacy means you'll read whatever slop I throw out next so here we go.

I like Frontiers Tails cause he can transform into a robot in final horizon and fly around but unfortunately not destroy any towers cause 1. He's not Bush and 2. Tornado fuel can't melt steel beams but that's not a real video game and in fact a free update and I wouldn't say that patch 1.4 changed Bridget's character in Guilty Gear but it did make me give up on playing her and the game and I'm so sad please help me.

Actual Frontiers Tails lives next to a volcano while in his little cyber form where he can both not feel physically and still can't find Hillary's emails somehow. I Will Survive

The Vampire Survivors DLC Ode to Castlevania ended up as one of my most entertaining gameplay experiences of 2024. This took me by surprise, as I was late to hop on the Vampire Survivors train, and didn't play the game until earlier this year. I'm not sure why I avoided it, considering how much I dig Castlevania (hey, here's a link to an old piece I wrote here about how the series cured my childhood fear of vampires), but it probably has something to do with automatically distrusting anything that gets too popular, and then thinking I am somehow superior for avoiding the mainstream.

That aside, Vampire Survivors is really a great game that's full of Newgrounds-style pluck, and it's precisely the sort of thing that a kid with no money to play real Castlevanias would've devoted their life to back in 2001. I kind of was that kid, considering that I first experienced all of the Castlevania games via emulation, but I digress. The ability to pimp out your character with all manner of add-ons and then stand in the middle of the screen as legions of foes try to get close, only to be bashed backwards by your spinning auras of bullshit, is tremendously entertaining. My fave survivor is Poppea Pecorina, who sings magic energy pillars into existence and apparently has a naughty name in Italian. But nobody in the OG Vampire Survivors roster can compete with the thrill of actually commanding Belmonts and the other associated protagonists of Konami's whip-slinging franchise, and that's what the Ode to Castlevania DLC brings to the fray.

The question of "who's your favorite Castlevania character" is one that renders tribalism equivalent to kids arguing about Batman versus Spider-Man on the playground, or maybe SNES versus Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. But it actually doesn't matter here, because almost all of the Castlevania characters to ever star in a game are on display in this DLC, either from the getgo or as secret unlockables after you "beat" the main map with Richter Belmont. And yes, mainstays like Richter, Trevor, Simon, and Alucard are all present and accounted for, but I'm more intrigued by the lesser-known and underappreciated characters, who have always been my preferred ones. (There I go again, deviating from what's popular.)

For instance, Juste, the Belmont who supposedly starred in the "worst" Game Boy Advance game (eff that noise), is very good, has a rocking remixed theme (all of the remixes here are top notch, to be fair), and boasts a pleasant nod to his role as the premiere Belmont mage thanks to an item called Belnades' Spellbook, which lets him spam magic like a beast. Then there's Sonia, the one female Belmont who starred in a game retconned by Koji Igarashi (also eff that noise), who is finally given the star status that she deserves (as well as a pair of trousers) with an OP skillset that makes her power rise the more meat she consumes. Now that's a Belmont matriarch for you!

However, it is the truly obscure cuts that make me bounce up and down in my seat whenever I'm playing Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania. I'm talking about inclusions like Quincy Morris, who only tangentially holds a connection to 1994's Castlevania: Bloodlines/The New Generation. Bloodlines is a personal favorite of mine as one of the best games on the Genesis, but I also like it as a title that dipped into funky continuity by tying Konami's "Conan versus Dracula" games with Bram Stoker's original Dracula novel. Quincy Morris is supposed to be the same Quincy Morris (spelled Quincey in the book) who showed up in the latter half of Dracula - you know, the part where the novel stops being gothic horror and becomes a rollocking D&D adventure. He's a Texan hanging out in Europe who just happens to have a bigass Bowie knife that he later uses to behead Dracula, and he was only referenced in the instruction manual of Bloodlines/The New Generation. Instead you played as his son John Morris, who would later go on to sire his own offspring named Jonathan Morris in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.

All of this lore is well and dandy, but Quincy has technically never appeared in an actual Castlevania game, nor has he had a sprite of his own...until now. Vampire Survivors did it, of all games, and now Quincy has been canonised as a dashing Texas bastard with a black hat and a...shuriken as his default weapon. I still think they should've stuck a Bowie knife into the game, but seeing as how there's already a standard knife, I see why they didn't. And hey, if Quincy can pop up in Europe in the original Dracula book just to fight the undead for the heck of it, who's to say that he can't pop up in Castlevania canon with a ninja star as his go-to projectile? The Morris side of the Belmont family line is clearly a weeaboo lineage!

I mention this attention to detail to outline the good work that poncle, the little company that could, has done with Ode to Castlevania. What started as a project that was intentionally derivative has evolved into something not only officially sanctioned by Konami, but a game that’s making its own contributions to Castlevania lore by ensuring that fallen-in-the-cracks characters like Quincy get their moment. This is especially important in the weird era we live in, where Castlevania is a very hot property thanks to the Netflix show but one that hasn't really had a game since Lords of Shadow 2, which was a decade ago and unfortunately poorly received. A few years ago, I would've said that Konami just doesn't care about their IP any more outside of what they can squeeze from pachinko machines, but seeing as how they published a remake of Silent Hill 2 courtesy of Blooper Team earlier this year, who knows. Maybe they're just waiting for the right studio to farm out the next Castlevania revival to.

If poncle ever wants to make a game beyond Vampire Survivors, I'd say that they'd be the group perfect for the job. As it stands, though, Ode to Castlevania probably wins the title of the best Castlevania game of the last ten years, and even if that's a low bar to clear, what we have here is very, very good and the epitome of fan service. I'm glad I stopped avoiding Vampire Survivors and finally dove in, and now I've got an eye towards checking out that Contra DLC from a few years back too...

Schezo for Character Opinion Bingo!! I realize that everyone is very mixed about him, and I'm curious

To no one's surprise, I am very normal about him. Uh huh.

I would love to write up my thoughts on him, but I'm sure you're not here to see me write an essay on this guy!!!

Here, I'll put my thoughts under the read more!

Did you know I expected Satan to be my favourite Puyo character but Schezo invaded my brain after I listened to his song?

The Gorgeous Man who Defiled the God is one of my favourite songs of all time, and, in pure Kirsten fashion, I searched up this weird guy named "Schezo" who's name I could see was CLEARLY one letter away from being "Joke" in Italian (Scherzo, a musical term for "Playful" funnily enough). I expected a joke character, and came back with... decapitation. Awesome. What is Wrong with him. (And why does he share themes with my other decapitated son??? (Allen) First time my friends found out I liked Schezo and he was also decapitated everyone thought it was BECAUSE he was decapitated djdbkddnksm THAT WAS A COINCIDENCE)

And then uh. It went horribly downhill from there and I like him he's silly he needs a nice nap that doesn't last 100 years again. (Shin Madou.)

The story of how I found him and got dragged into Puyo is much longer than that, but let's not delve into that. XD

As a few people know, my favourite characters share one theme: They aren't as they seem. And with Schezo, that's the case as well; he's a powerful Dark Mage with a hardened exterior, but also thought to be a pervert due to his horrible way of speech. Yet, he's stupid dense (maybe even naive with the innuendos) and loves cute things. Heck, it's hinted that he even liked cute things/animals back in the Madou 123 era!

Actually, he's the most "evil" character I like! However, he's not the most violent (a 10 year old takes that title) and... actually he's pretty chill for a supposedly evil guy. I'd say he's like... an anti-hero? He definitely got character development if he went from "guy who kidnaps magic users and uses their dead bodies for a sick amalgamation" to "silly innuendo guy who loves cute things and chickens out of killing people (and sacrificing himself for people he thinks hate him)". As much as he says he will, I don't think he's taking Arle's power anytime soon.

Everyone's characterisations of Schezo are really different, and I think that's so awesome! They're not as varied as, say, Ragnus, but there's huge differences if the person only knows of Sega or if they also dabble in Compile. I tend to know more about Compile era than Sega era, so my Schezo tends to be a little colder to match that.

His story is also stupidly tragic. Local 14 year old who is doing too well in school gets kidnapped and cursed to become the Dark Mage. At least in Shin Madou he wants to become the Dark Mage at least...? Doesn't look like it in ARS though.

However, the Statue of the Hero he was supposed to see was a statue of Ragnus, and that makes me go insane everytime I think about it. Does he realise the random hero guy who turns into a child is the Hero his village looked up to???

My favourite design of him is actually Tower of the Magician, but thanks to bias, Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon is my second favourite design. Madou II rocks as well. Have you seen that guy's painted nails???

If you ever see me draw Schezo (once in a blue moon), you may notice that I give him shoulder pads. This is simply because I forget Sega Schezo does not have those and I like shoulder pads, kapeesh? (It's a mistake I constantly make dbdkdnsks whoopsie)

On the other hand, Saturn Schezo creeps me out. In my opinion, they got his personality very wrong. People have been telling me that he gets better after Ragnus gets his body back though! I really hope that's the case.

I'd say Schezo isn't bullied enough, but if Satan's not in the room he usually ends up as the butt of the jokes. And to that, I say, yes. Keep bullying him :) (But also. Sometimes he gets bullied too much.)

He also deserves a nice hot cup of milk and a pat on the back. Nothing goes right in this man's life I stg.

I rock with his aesthetic hard!!! I'm a sucker for astrology aesthetics (hence Moon for Allen, Stars/Sun for Joseph and Sonic, etc.) And Schezo has such a cool moon aesthetic he has going on!!!

And even his belts in 15th anniversary have crescent moons on them!

This franchise inspired the entire world with its incredible stories, magnificent characters, and amazing moments. Without Dragon Ball, we wouldn't have Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Piccolo, and many others. And as a matter of fact, we wouldn't have the iconic Super Saiyan form, the form that's widely considered as the inspiration for Super Sonic.

Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog Explained

Ichiban : I cannot believe you pranked us to think you were murdered. We worried for a Danganronpa-like mystery novel game but then you entirely played a prank to all fans around the world! We’re you even thinking we the guys of Sega are sick and tired of April Fools jokes? All our companies do is to make simple pranks. One time they made Yakuza 7 a game that was originally an April fools joke, the joke that started the real game Yakuza 7.

Sonic : Oh yeah, I was going to tell you that the Murder of me is actually an April Fools Joke. We been planning to do an April fools joke on a mystery train and therefore there was no murder of me and I wanted to apologize for pranking the fans.

Ichiban : Oh really?

Sonic : (takes a pill to put it in his mouth, and then drinks some water to swallow) Funny thing is, I don’t do April fools pranks! I always hated April fools. That’s the reason of Sega isn’t going to make another gaming prank of a murder mystery about me anymore.

Ichiban : Are you swallowing a pill to get those migraines out of you?

Sonic : What do you expect? If there wasn't really a murder of me, I would be explained to tell that if I was really dead and went to heaven or in hell for kissing a character that isn't animal.

Ichiban : Uhh, Mr Sonic. Those aren't your meds...

Sonic : What? (Looks at a bottle of Cyanide pills) Somebody changed my pills! (Before dying) Son of a b*tch, Sega! (Collapses and dies)

Sonic EXE : Not to worry, guys. You'll be happy to get your own Cyanide Pills while eggman gets his pills last. [Pills last is repeated three times deeper]

He really needed a new one; there's only so many upgrades Sumire can come up with at the Romance Workshop. Now that he thinks about it, maybe he should pay her a visit. Despite how cool the new weapon is, Ichiban's attention is quickly stolen by the video game it came with.

❝ You must think it's weird I'm still getting excited about this stuff, but these games are great! I'm sure you'd enjoy them too. Although, you don't strike me as the type of guy who spends time at the arcade nowadays. Maybe back in the 80s... ❞ His voice gets quieter as the image of a clean shaved Majima entering Sega pops into his head. Nope, there's no way that actually happened. ❝ Thank you, though! Now you need to tell me when's your birthday so I can get you something, too! ❞

I’m just going to ramble about how we see Shadow’s character develop throughout the Sonic games (mostly the Dreamcast era with some modern era stuff thrown in there) and why I think his character is a lot more than just being an “edgy hedgie with a gun”. Everything is going to be below a readmore, since this is going to be really long.

Yes, it’s an old complaint that Shadow is not just some edgy teenager with a gun who gets angry all the time and solely lives to pick on Sonic, but if you actually take time to sit back and consider all of Shadow’s actions from his first appearance in SA2 onward, he actually seems less evil and edgy than people make him out to be.

Shadow’s character changes a lot in my opinion from SA2 to Heroes, but there are reasons that he acts differently in these games. Starting in SA2, Shadow is depicted as a villain who helps Eggman in trying to destroy the world with the ARK, and of course his tragic backstory combined with his evil actions makes him look like a stereotypical edgy angst magnet. But we need to consider the reason why Shadow helps Eggman in order to make a judgement about how evil he really is.

Shadow wasn’t helping Eggman just because he wanted to see the world burn out of some innate sadistic desire or a desire to have power over everyone else for no reason other than being evil. He helped Eggman because he incorrectly remembered Maria’s wish before dying as her wanting revenge for her death. He was also somehow made to believe he owed Eggman a favor for waking him up from cryostasis (literally calling him “Master” and saying he will grant him one wish).

Speaking of cryostasis, a friend of mine brought up the fact that from Shadow’s point-of-view at that point in time, he had literally just plummeted to Earth after watching his only friend sacrifice herself to send him to safety and then be murdered by people he doesn’t know for reasons he doesn’t understand, was then captured and imprisoned by said people he doesn’t know for reasons he doesn’t understand, and now has been awoken by someone he hardly seems to know and is expected to fulfill that person’s wish of destroying the world. Shadow’s mistaken memory conveniently matches up with Eggman’s desire to destroy the world, and while it’s not justified to kill innocent people just to get revenge for the unjust death of one person, Shadow didn’t necessarily want to murder people out of sadism or some evil desire - his actions in SA2 are done out of his devotion to Maria, a trait which we see in later games.

Shadow’s actions take a dramatic turn when he eventually remembers what Maria really wanted after Amy convinces him to help the others stop the ARK. After that point, he abandons his stubborn refusal to help and leaves Amy immediately to go join up with everyone as quickly as he can (even though he had been Sonic’s nemesis up until that point throughout the entire game). He even goes as far as to fight the Biolizard for Sonic and Knuckles so they can stop the Chaos Emeralds and later joins Sonic in his super form to stop Finalhazard, only to sacrifice himself to save the Earth in the end. These actions are clearly linked with the fact that Maria’s true wish was for Shadow to protect the Earth, and we see here that again, his actions are done out of devotion to Maria and possibly a genuine sense of heroism.

What do I mean by heroism? Well, even as early as SA2, we see that Shadow is quick to defend or protect innocent people and his friends, and he doesn’t let innocent people be endangered if he can help it. One major example I can think of in SA2 is when Rouge is trapped on Prison Island. After running late in escaping the island on her mission to get the Chaos Emeralds, she calls Shadow and lets him know she won’t make it off in time with the Emeralds. Shadow naturally wants to save the Emeralds because he needs them to achieve his goal, but when he uses Chaos Control to get to Rouge, does he simply grab the Emeralds and leave again? Absolutely not. He takes Rouge with him right before the island explodes, thus rescuing both her and the Emeralds. When the two talk later, Rouge brings this up, and Shadow claims he only came to save the Emeralds, but that may be a cover so that he doesn’t show Rouge he cares (this connects to something I’ll mention later). After all, he could have, in theory, grabbed the Emeralds while Rouge was still shocked from seeing him use Chaos Control and then left Rouge to die in the explosion.

Shadow actually shows this same willingness to protect others in Sonic Heroes and Sonic ‘06, both incidents involving Rouge as well. The example from Heroes is really striking because it’s implied that Shadow forgot everything that happened in SA2 after falling back to Earth again. In the opening cutscene of Team Dark’s route, Omega awakens when Rouge tries to unlock the capsule holding Eggman’s “secret treasure” and opens fire on her. Shadow wakes up to notice this and, instead of immediately facing off with Omega to stop his reckless shooting, actually pushes Rouge out of harm’s way and then tries to stop Omega. What’s significant about this interaction is that Shadow supposedly doesn’t remember Rouge at all, and yet he decides to keep her safe even though he doesn’t know her. He could have left her to die from Omega’s gunfire and used that to stall Omega so he could take him out, but he decides to make sure she’s safe first. On the other hand, he attacks Omega because Omega seems like a threat to him - Omega attacked first, and so Shadow feels the need to stop him. This scene brings up another interesting point in Shadow’s character we see a lot: Shadow doesn’t attack someone who doesn’t threaten him first or otherwise causes him some sort of problem. This may be why Shadow was so quick to fight Sonic in SA2 despite not knowing who Sonic is. Sonic often posed a threat to Shadow by trying to take the Chaos Emeralds away from him or otherwise just demanding a fight, to which Shadow obliged. The same is true for the inter-team boss fights in Sonic Heroes, where Team Dark faced off with the other teams because Rouge was worried they would get in Team Dark’s way. Rather than being the aggressors who pick a fight for no reason, both teams involved typically had a reason to defend themselves.

But getting back to Shadow’s heroism, the example from Sonic ‘06 I mentioned earlier is equally important in showing this facet of Shadow’s character. When Rouge and Shadow are on a mission to get the scepter holding Mephiles, they are ambushed by Eggman, and at one point Rouge is struck down from the sky. Shadow had a choice at this point to either keep his hold on the scepter and let Rouge crash or save her and let the scepter break. He goes for the latter and catches Rouge just in time, but as a result, the scepter breaks, and Mephiles is freed. This decision to save Rouge over keeping whatever dark power trapped inside the scepter contained shows that Shadow prioritizes his friends’ safety greatly, even if it means he has to sacrifice something else.

Shadow really is a kind and loyal person at heart, though sometimes his emotions get the best of him. The same friend I mentioned earlier pointed out that Shadow’s aggression in earlier games like SA2, Heroes, and ShTh was probably just a side-effect of him being so confused about who he is - and more importantly where he is. Keep in mind that Shadow had never been on Earth before SA2, and now that he has to face this brand-new world, all while not knowing what his intended purpose was in life, must have driven him to be aggressive. His dedication to achieving his goals probably fed this aggression as well, since it may have been the best way to deter any impediments to his goals. My friend also brought up the fact that Shadow, while being chronologically 66 years old, is mentally and physically 16 years old. He’s going to act and think like a typical 16-year-old, albeit with some behaviors found in people who experienced trauma, because that’s what he is. He likes blowing things up and being powerful because he knows how powerful he is (he brings up the fact that he’s the ultimate life form all the time), but he doesn’t use that power for evil or just for kicks, as we see in many games where, when Shadow acts like his true self, he uses his powers for only good. His overconfidence in games like SA2 and Heroes also stems from the fact that he is, in fact, a young teenager with lots of power at his fingertips and a new world to explore. In this respect, he and Sonic are very similar: both are kind and a bit prideful, but they don’t put down others unless they prove to be evil or a threat.

An interesting side note on Shadow’s power is that he seems to get untold amounts of strength from his love for and devotion to the people he cares about. We see this multiple times in the true ending of ShTH, where Shadow is able to instantly recover from the effect of Black Doom’s paralyzing gas through his accumulated memories of Maria and later when he breaks free from Black Doom’s mind control after seeing Gerald’s message to Shadow about the Black Comet. The entire premise of Heroes being that each Team grows stronger through teamwork and the friendship between all three people in each Team also remains true for Shadow, despite people typically seeing him as a loner-type. And just as much as Shadow gets strength from his loved ones, he encourages them as well when they need strength. Throughout the entire Finalhazard fight in SA2, Shadow constantly checks on Sonic to make sure he is okay and even compliments him at one point, saying with a laugh that he believes Sonic may be the actual ultimate life form. In Heroes we see this same kind of support towards Sonic when Shadow offers to distract Metal Sonic during the Metal Madness fight so that Team Sonic can go super, and later in Generations Shadow says the infamous line: “You’ve got this, Sonic!” as an expression of genuine encouragement and faith in Sonic’s abilities.

Just as Shadow believes in his own power and others’ power, Shadow also has a capacity for understanding right from wrong, and though ShTH shows that he understands that some choices aren’t black and white, he knows when evil needs to be punished. It is ironic that people consider Shadow a villain simply because of his appearance when he has spoken out against evil multiple times in multiple games. In Heroes, during the Metal Madness fight, Shadow actually criticizes Metal Sonic for stealing data on all living life forms in order to become strong, showing that he doesn’t believe in unfair methods of obtaining power. In ShTH he shows the same kind of sentiment towards Black Doom, refusing to give him the Chaos Emeralds and becoming angry at Black Doom for tricking him into collecting them for him in order to enslave the human race. Shadow’s distaste for evil is shown directly in the lyrics of “Supporting Me”, where the “air of darkness” is said to be “disgusting”, and yet Shadow “never [loses] out” to it, indicating that he doesn’t let his past evil actions get him down or discourage him from wanting to change for the better. He even outright states in his victory phrase after defeating Finalhazard that he wants to destroy “all the evil [Professor Gerald] has created”.

Another point in Shadow’s character that is similar to Sonic but also shows his own unique perspective on life: he values his freedom just as much as he values his friends, and doesn’t let his past get to him. The Dreamcast era games really focused on Shadow’s identity issues, but they also showed that he handles them in a way that doesn’t let them bring him down. In fact, Rouge is the one to mention Shadow’s identity problems in both SA2 and Heroes. In SA2, Rouge confronts Shadow about the fact that his memories may be fake and that he may not be the real end product of Project Shadow, but Shadow doesn’t respond with sorrow or a typical “angsty” answer. He instead asserts that even if his memories are fake, he is who he is now as a result of his actions throughout the entire story of SA2, and he is content with the identity he has made for himself. He then doesn’t dwell on the issue any longer and focuses on his own goal. A similar situation occurs in Heroes, where, upon finding the Shadow Androids, Rouge attempts to console Shadow, who has gone silent. Rather than breaking down, Shadow simply tells Rouge to disregard the Androids and to keep moving. This action ties back to the point I made earlier about Shadow not letting others see that he cares all the time. Possibly because he doesn’t want to burden others with his problems or let those problems affect who he is as a person, Shadow doesn’t let Rouge dwell on what he may have felt upon seeing the Androids and decides to ignore them. We see a similar reaction in Sonic ‘06, after learning that Omega was the one to seal him away in the future, Shadow doesn’t go off on Omega or cause an uproar. He simply walks away, probably to give himself time to think or just to avoid burdening Rouge and Omega with his feelings at that moment.

During the final stage of Heroes, Shadow makes a declaration reminiscent of the one in SA2 and affirms his identity as who he is currently rather than what he was in the past. ShTH really brings this together during the True Ending, when Shadow outright declares to Black Doom after breaking free from the paralyzing gas, “I’m Shadow the Hedgehog. I’ve left the past behind me. No one can tell me what to do now!” Shadow not only retains his freedom to determine who he is but also his destiny - which brings up another quote from Sonic ‘06. After Mephiles shows Shadow his future self imprisoned in a capsule permanently for fear of his power in order to convince him to take revenge on the humans who imprisoned him, Shadow simply tells Mephiles to quit the act and that he will never listen to his futile persuasion. Upon Mephiles asking if Shadow will really forgive humanity for his fate, Shadow says only one thing: “I determine my own destiny.” We even see in ShTH that Shadow doesn’t let his memories of Maria and Gerald haunt him: in the final cutscene of the True Ending, Shadow tosses away a picture of himself and Maria while saying “Goodbye forever, Shadow the Hedgehog”, signifying that he won’t let his past define him or haunt him any longer. He doesn’t let anyone - whether it be his own father, Maria, Gerald, or even his friends - determine his path of action and his choices. The entirety of ShTH is spent with Shadow determining his course of action in order to get to what he believes in the truth, demonstrating his belief in his own strength and sense of right and wrong (which is shown to be less black-and-white than it seems at first). All of Shadow’s character songs tie back to themes of freedom to be oneself or confidence in one’s identity created through one’s actions, and these songs often give off a feeling of being victory songs because victory for Shadow is asserting that he is who he is no matter what may have happened in the past.

In the end, I think Shadow is a kind, loyal, and determined person at heart who knows that right and wrong aren’t always easy to discern at first but still wants to protect the world from wrongdoing and help those in the world who are symbols of goodness, and who also values his freedom and loved ones more than anything.

You’re the son of a baron, what’s that like? Are you also a baron? 

I’m not a baron yet, I’ll inherit the title someday. For me being the son of a baron isn’t that strange since I’ve grown up with it, and most of my friends are also from titled families. I guess the American equivalent would be growing up the son of a senator or a famous actor. Mostly my life is pretty normal... I go to school, hang out with my friends... there’s just some fancy parties and stuff.  

What do you plan to study when you go to college? 

I’m really interested in philosophy... we read some [French philosopher] Jean-Paul Sartre in school, and I just started reading some Machiavelli. It’s really interesting to learn different ways of looking at the world. I also like to study literature and art for the same reason. 

What do you like to do in your free time? 

I love horseback riding... my family has a pretty large stable of horses and I’ve been riding since I was little. I like video games... I play a lot of Tetris on my GameBoy, and a bunch of games on my Sega Genesis. I also like to read and watch tv. 

What’s your favorite TV show? 

We actually watch a lot of American tv in Sokovia, though we get it a few years after it’s aired... we get old sitcoms like Dick Van Dyke and 21 Jumpstreet just started airing here. My guilty pleasure is a Sokovian sitcom called Zrazu Bogatny (Suddenly Rich) about a goatherd who inherits a barony... it’s a lot like the American show The Beverly Hillbillies. 

What’s your favorite band? 

I’m really into Rammstein, Kraftwerk, Die Ärzte... lots of German bands. I also like Depeche Mode and The Cure. I also really like to dance, so I also like techno and anything you can dance to!

Do you have a girlfriend? 

Not right now... but I’d love to find someone special!
