Georgian/Regency Coral Jewelry
Adèle Romany (French, 1769–1846) • Portrait of a Woman at a Pianoforte • 1808
I came across so many portraits from the early 19th century of young women wearing coral jewelry that I had to look into why.
Thomas Barber (British, 1771–1843) • Lady Caroline Gordon, Lady Chesham (1785-1866) • Between 1805-1815
It was believed by the people of the era that coral contained properties that protected the health and well-being of the wearer. Coral was worn mostly by young women and children because their health was considered the most vulnerable. If the coral remained bright, it signified its wearer was in good health. If it turned dull, it indicated that the person wearing it was either ill or soon to be. Wearing coral for a portrait helped to portray that the sitter was "the picture of health".
Jewelry sets, such as this one, were called parure. The comb in the upper center was called a diadem. These matching sets are evident in portraits (see the Romany portrait), mostly coral or pearl studded.
Adèle Romany (1769-1846) • Portrait of a Young Piano Player Holding a Music Score (Miss Thevenet de Montgarrel) • c. 1802

“Pick the flowers that grow in the midst of hell.” 🥀The myth of Persephone is the story of a young girl who is kidnapped and forced into the darkest place imaginable - the underworld. Instead of succumbing, she rises to Queen. In facing the blackest shadows and emerging stronger than before, Persephone perfects the art of personal power. I created this jewel to honor this triumph, and to remind us that the most difficult circumstances provide the most fertile grounds for transformation. Handmade poppies bloom and sway along a handcrafted cauldron. In Ancient Greek flower lore, poppies represent fertility and abundance, which link them to Demeter and Persephone. In art from the era, both goddesses are often depicted with them. Persephone is shown rising from the underworld with these flowers in her arms, and in later accounts is said to have a garden of eternally blooming poppies in the underworld. When we dig deeper, the connection between Persephone and the role of poppies in Greek society and myth is even more remarkable. In The Odyssey, we learn of a potion taken to ease sadness and erase painful memories. This potion, called Nepenthes Pharmakon {literally “not-sorrow drug”, poetically “the potion which chases away sorrow}, was likely a concoction of wine and poppies, which mirrored medicine taken in real life for the same purposes. This means, then, that when Persephone rises from the underworld with an armful of poppies, she emerges from her most traumatic experience bearing a flower that is not only literal medicine for emotional pain, but also a symbol of abundance. Despite the terror of a descent into the underworld, there is healing and strength to be found when we face our shadows. The cauldron further invokes these themes, as a symbol of transformation, abundance, creation, and divine feminine power. Seven smoky quartz spring forth from this hollow vessel, radiating their grounding, soothing, and cleansing energies to the wearer. The central crystal features a void left behind by another crystal, representative of the separation of Demeter and Persephone, and the parts of ourselves we shed in order to rise anew. 🖤 #soliloquyjewelry

The Cultural Significance of Jewelry Across Societies
https://www.wjdexclusives.com/blog/the-cultural-significance-of-jewelry-across-societies/
The Cultural Significance of Jewelry Across Societies
Jewelry is more than just a decorative accessory; it is a powerful symbol of cultural identity, status, and heritage that varies significantly across different societies around the world. From the intricate beadwork of African tribes to the sophisticated gold craftsmanship of ancient Indian civilizations, jewelry serves as a silent storyteller, conveying centuries of tradition, values, and social norms.
Historical Roots and Cultural Connections
In many cultures, jewelry is deeply intertwined with history and tradition. For instance, in ancient Egypt, both men and women adorned themselves with elaborate jewelry made from precious metals and stones, believing it to offer protection and convey their status. The pharaohs and high-ranking officials wore extensive amounts of jewelry, which also played a role in their burial rituals, intended to prepare them for the afterlife.
Similarly, Native American jewelry, particularly pieces crafted by tribes such as the Navajo and Zuni, often incorporates elements like turquoise, which is not only beautiful but is also thought to hold protective and healing properties. The designs often include symbols that represent various spiritual beliefs, tribal stories, and connections to the natural world.
Jewelry as a Symbol of Status and Wealth
In many societies, jewelry also signifies social and economic status. The materials used, such as diamonds, gold, and other precious stones, often represent wealth and power. In Victorian England, for example, jewelry was an indicator of social standing and personal wealth, with mourning jewelry becoming a widespread tradition to show respect and remembrance for the deceased.
Today, this tradition continues in various forms across the world. In modern Western societies, engagement rings and wedding bands, often diamonds set in gold or platinum, are used to signify marital commitment. These pieces are cherished, not only for their aesthetic appeal but for their representation of love and commitment.
Cultural Diversity in Design
Our fine jewelry brand from NYC celebrates this rich diversity of jewelry traditions by offering a collection that includes over 6,000 styles. Each piece is crafted with a nod to the cultural significances that jewelry holds globally. From elaborate filigree work reminiscent of Middle Eastern artistry to minimalist designs that echo Scandinavian simplicity, our collection is a testament to the varied ways that cultures around the world celebrate through adornment.

We invite you to explore our extensive collection, where each piece tells a unique story of cultural significance, crafted with respect and reverence for the traditions that it represents.

I randomly got dragged to Mormon church and met the illustrator for A Series of Unfortunate Events who is apparently a bishop at the church, and now we are Instagram mutuals. today was so bizarre
#dw im not converting to mormonism#the Mormon missionary that asked me to go was also a native American girl & if u know about this history between natives and mormons....uhhh#one of the priests also gave this bizarre speech about how illogical the book of mormon was and how joseph smith makes 0 sense#but he was like “but its supposed to be confusing so i still believe in this religion” ???#they were all super duper nice too but kind of in the customer service way. a mormon girl also complimented my friend's lesbian jewelry#lesbian jewlery as in it was literally two female symbols linked together#it was VERY obvious and we asked the girl why she liked it and she was like. “uhh i just like jewlery hehe!!!”

A reminder just in case for some new Galemancers.
You know Gale's earring
Gale's earring is NOT HIS SYMBOL!
THAT IS MYSTRA'S HOLY SYMBOL.
That earring is a gift to Gale from Mystra. It's to show that he is her chosen kinda like tagging cattle
Please be aware if you want some Gale merch and they use that symbol. That is not Gale's and you are practically wearing his ex's symbol.
If you guys want to use a symbol for Gale, there is a cut content symbol for Gale (all companions have this)
Apparently this is similar to the symbol of Waterdeep with the crescent moon.
Or just use the Netherese orb mark on Gale's chest.
Just please be aware the earring is Mystra's symbol not Gale's.
