they are foul for saying merritt to mercedes just sounds right because i hate how they are absolutely correct. a little alliteration goes a long way.

F1 — 2031 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX — TEAM PRINCIPAL PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
TEAM REPRESENTATIVES: Christian HORNER (Red Bull), Daniel RICCIARDO (RB), Toto WOLFF (Mercedes)
Q: Right, usually I would start with individually asking all of you but given the recent news of RB driver Callan Merritt moving into Mercedes next season and that implicating all of you, I’ll ask all of you instead. Callan to Mercedes? How did it happen? Toto, we might start with you.
Toto WOLFF: Actually he came to us in April this year to see what options were available with the team. He heard from someone that George was retiring at the end of this year, and we were starting to look into drivers to replace him for the future and I will not lie, he wasn’t on our list. Not because he is a bad driver, he’s very good, but we all assumed that he would stay with Red Bull. We immediately started talks with him shortly after he contacted us, and we are excited that he is joining us from next year.
Q: Christian, I can only presume that this came quite a surprise for you and the team?
Christian HORNER: Yes, certainly quite a surprise given that we were still in negotiations until a couple weeks ago. Obviously we’ve always been interested in Callan moving up into Red Bull, he’s a quick driver and you know we saw that in Abu Dhabi last year when he won. It is quite disappointing given that we’ve been working together since his junior career, we did bring him up through the driver academy, but he’s free to do what he wants. And if he thinks that moving to Mercedes is a good move then he’s welcome to do that.
Q: Daniel, I assume something similar for you? You would’ve been aware that Callan would be in negotiations with Red Bull? Was the announcement a shock for you?
Daniel RICCIARDO: No, not a shock for us, I was aware of this before the announcement. I’ve always maintained that Callan is an incredibly talented driver and he deserves the chance to be at a team that can fight for wins and championships on a regular basis—something that we’re unfortunately maybe not necessarily equipped to do at RB—so whether it be at Red Bull, Mercedes or whatever, I think it’s the right choice for him.
CH: Would have been nice to be given a heads up.
DR: Driver contract negotiations for Red Bull were always between Red Bull and Callan, not RB and Callan. We’ll support him in whatever choice he makes whilst he’s with us.
TW: I’m very glad I am not sitting in the middle today!

why does toto make it sound like daniel helped callan move to mercedes in some capacity because that’s INSANE. “heard from someone that george was retiring” in april—george’s retirement wasn’t announced until last month. who does callan know that is close enough with george for him to reveal he’s retiring… daniel ricciardo
#or daniel has a sixth sense when it comes to retirement and like max he felt it in the air when it came to george #either way works for me
