Jetset Superstar Travel Blog (Galapagos)
"Exploring the World, One Luxury Destination at a Time!"
About Us
Welcome to Jetset Superstar, where travel dreams take flight! I am a globetrotter dedicated to uncovering the most luxurious and unique travel experiences around the world. Whether you’re looking for opulent resorts, gourmet dining, or hidden gems off the beaten path, we’ve got you covered!
We will show you the best places to go, depending on what holiday you are looking for. We will also show you the best places to book your holiday. What to take, before you go and what to do there.
Choosing the perfect holiday can be both exciting and daunting, as it sets the tone for your getaway. Start by considering what type of experience you crave—whether it’s a relaxing beach retreat, an adventurous mountain escape, or a vibrant city exploration. Think about your budget and how far you're willing to travel, as these factors will help narrow down your options. Don’t forget to consider the season; some destinations shine during specific times of the year, offering unique festivals or optimal weather. Finally, involve your travel companions in the decision-making process to ensure that everyone’s interests are accounted for, making your holiday not just a trip, but a memorable adventure for all.
Things to think about?
Before booking your holiday, consider these key factors:
Budget: Determine how much you’re willing to spend, including flights, accommodation, activities, and meals. This will help you narrow down your options.
Destination: Research potential destinations based on your interests—be it adventure, relaxation, culture, or cuisine. Check travel advisories and safety information.
Timing: Consider the best time to visit your chosen destination in terms of weather, peak tourist seasons, and local events or festivals.
Travel Companions: Discuss preferences and interests with anyone travelling with you to ensure everyone’s needs are met.
Accommodation: Decide whether you prefer hotels, vacation rentals, or unique stays like boutique lodges. Check reviews and amenities that matter to you.
Activities: Make a list of must-do activities and experiences. Some may require advance booking, so plan accordingly.
Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind, covering potential cancellations or medical emergencies.
Visas and Vaccinations: Check if your destination requires visas or vaccinations and ensure you have everything in order well in advance.
Taking the time to reflect on these aspects will help you plan a smoother and more enjoyable holiday.
This time we have visited -
The Galapagos islands
Choosing an island in the Galapagos depends on your interests and what kind of experience you’re looking for. Here’s a brief overview of some popular options:
Santa Cruz: A great starting point, it has the largest population and offers easy access to other islands. You can visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, explore the highlands, and enjoy beautiful beaches.
San CristĂłbal: Known for its rich wildlife and historical significance, this island features the capital, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. It's ideal for snorkelling, and you can visit the Interpretation Center to learn about conservation efforts.
Isabela: The largest island, Isabela is perfect for those seeking adventure and stunning landscapes. It boasts the Sierra Negra volcano, unique wildlife, and beautiful beaches. Great for hiking and exploring.
Floreana: This smaller island is less crowded and offers a glimpse into the Galapagos' history. It’s ideal for snorkelling, and you can see sea lions and other wildlife.
Genovesa: Known as "Bird Island," it's a haven for birdwatchers. The dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches make it a unique spot, but it’s less accessible and typically part of longer cruises.
Consider what activities you enjoy—snorkelling, hiking, or wildlife viewing—and the kind of atmosphere you want when deciding on your ideal island!
I have always stayed in Santa Cruz as it has the biggest population and more hotels and restaurants and nightlife. Tours are available here by boat to all the other islands.
The Galapagos Islands, an Ecuadorian archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean, are renowned for their unique biodiversity and dramatic landscapes. Comprising 13 major islands and numerous smaller islets, this UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its extraordinary wildlife, much of which inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection.
Highlights
Biodiversity: Home to species found nowhere else on Earth, such as the Galapagos giant tortoise, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies, the islands offer unparalleled opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Unique Ecosystems: The varied landscapes range from volcanic craters and lava fields to lush highlands and pristine beaches, providing diverse habitats for flora and fauna.
Activities: Visitors can enjoy snorkelling, diving, hiking, and wildlife watching. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for exploring vibrant marine life, including sea turtles and colourful fish.
Conservation: The Galapagos Islands are a model for conservation efforts, with strict regulations in place to protect their fragile ecosystems. Sustainable tourism practices are emphasised to preserve the natural beauty.
Cultural Heritage: The islands have a rich history, from their discovery in the 16th century to their development as a national park and marine reserve. Local communities contribute to the preservation of their environment.
The Galapagos Islands offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience, combining adventure with the chance to witness nature in its most pristine form.
Packing for the Galapagos Islands requires careful consideration to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Here’s a helpful list of essentials:
Lightweight Clothing: Bring breathable, quick-drying clothes suitable for warm weather, including T-shirts, shorts, and lightweight long sleeves for sun protection.
Swimwear: Pack a couple of swimsuits for snorkelling and beach outings.
Comfortable Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes or hiking sandals are essential for exploring trails, along with flip-flops for the beach.
Light Jacket or Sweater: Evenings can be cool, so a light jacket or sweater is recommended.
Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen (reef-safe), sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect against the sun.
Snorkelling Gear: While many tours provide equipment, you might want to bring your own mask and snorkel for comfort.
Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, so a reusable water bottle will help minimize plastic waste.
Insect Repellent: Bring a good insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes, especially in the highlands.
Camera and Binoculars: Capture the unique wildlife and landscapes, and binoculars are great for bird watching.
Personal Medications: Ensure you have any necessary prescriptions and a small first-aid kit.
Packing these essentials will help you make the most of your Galapagos adventure!
When packing for the Galapagos Islands, it’s important to leave behind certain items that aren’t practical or necessary. Here’s what not to pack:
Heavy Luggage: Avoid large suitcases; opt for a lightweight backpack or soft duffel for easier transport on smaller boats and uneven terrain.
Formal Wear: Leave behind dressy outfits and formal shoes. Casual, comfortable clothing is ideal for the laid-back atmosphere.
Excessive Toiletries: Don’t pack large bottles or multiple products. Bring travel-sized toiletries and consider buying some items locally.
High Heels or Dress Shoes: These are impractical for the islands' rocky paths and beaches; stick to sturdy sandals or hiking shoes.
Excessive Electronics: Limit gadgets; while a camera and phone are great, you don’t need multiple devices. Also, remember to bring chargers and adaptors.
Heavy Jackets: While it can get cool in the evenings, a lightweight jacket or sweater is sufficient. No need for heavy winter wear.
Single-use Plastics: To minimise environmental impact, avoid bringing disposable plastic items. Opt for reusable bottles and bags instead.
How to get there?
To get to the Galapagos Islands, follow these steps:
Fly to Ecuador: Start by booking a flight to Ecuador, typically landing in Quito or Guayaquil, which are the main international gateways.
Connect to the Galapagos: From Quito or Guayaquil, take a domestic flight to either Baltra (near Santa Cruz Island) or San CristĂłbal Island. Several airlines operate this route, with flights taking about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Enter the National Park: Upon arrival, you'll need to pay a National Park entrance fee, which is typically around $200 for adults. Make sure you have this in cash, very important.
Transportation on the Islands: Once in the Galapagos, you can arrange for transfers, join guided tours, or use local taxis and buses to get around.
Plan Your Itinerary: Decide whether you want to stay on one island or take a cruise to explore multiple islands, as this affects your travel logistics.
Booking in advance, especially during peak seasons, is recommended to secure flights and accommodations.
I used this website for my flights - https://trip.tp.st/orl0fH3l
When travelling to Guayaquil and Quito, it's essential to stay informed about safety:
Guayaquil
Crime Awareness: Petty crime, such as pick pocketing and bag snatching, can occur, especially in crowded areas. Stay vigilant and avoid displaying valuables.
Transportation: Use reputable taxi services or ride share apps instead of hailing cabs on the street, especially at night.
Neighborhoods: Stick to well-trafficked areas and avoid less populated neighborhoods after dark.
I have stayed at the Holiday Inn hotel at Guayaquil airport as its 5 stars and right next to the airport, no need to go into town if you are not interested. There is a pool on the roof with a gym and the food is very good. Free shuttle service available. In town i stayed at the Wyndham Puerto Santa Ana which was very good also.
Find it here - https://trip.tp.st/8Kpkr2Sx
In the town - https://trip.tp.st/J8fbB4Pb
Quito
Street Safety: Similar to Guayaquil, be cautious of your belongings in crowded places. Use a money belt and keep bags secured.
Public Transport: Use official taxis or ride share options, and be wary of public transport during peak hours.
Altitude Awareness: Quito is at a high altitude, so take it slow to acclimatise and stay hydrated.
Overall, both cities have their challenges, but with common sense and caution, you can enjoy a safe visit.
In Quito i stayed at the Wyndham Quito Airport and it was very nice, pool and gym and great restaurant. In the town i stayed at the JW Marriott Quito, which was exceptional.
At the Airport - https://trip.tp.st/QWLhzX7F
In the town - https://trip.tp.st/jWBFm6qd
If you plan to stay a couple of days in one of these cities, there is plenty to see and too much to list here.
Your Flight to Galapagos islands
The normal flight time to the Islands is 10.00 AM. Get to the airport with plenty of time in hand as you have to go through a quarantine process. They will ask you how long you are staying and will want to see proof of your return flights and where you are staying. Make sure you have all this with you and I found it easier to have it in paper form as it was easier than my previous trip using my mobile.
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY FOOD OR PLANTS IN YOUR LUGGAGE.
They will then send your case through the scanner and off to the plane.
The main 2 airlines are Avianca and Latam. I have always used Latam which seems very good. Download their app, and also Avianca as I found them useful.
Useful link for flights to the islands - https://trip.tp.st/orl0fH3l
Landing in Galapagos
Depending where you are going you will either land at Seymour Galapagos Ecological Airport on the island of Baltra, which is a 5 minute boat ride away from Santa Cruz island.
This airport is the first ecological airport in the world and before tourism this was used as a base for American Planes during the second world war to hunt Japanese and German Submarines.
Once you are in Santa Cruz, it is a 45 minute drive to Puerto Ayora, the main town.
There are taxis and buses waiting here but most of the big hotels provide shuttle service.
San Cristobal island is the other airport.
Where to stay?
There are so many excellent hotels and hostels here to choose from, depending on your budget.

Eating out in the Galapagos
Eating out in the Galapagos offers a delightful blend of local flavours and fresh ingredients. Here are some key points to consider:
Local Cuisine
Seafood: Given the islands' proximity to the ocean, fresh seafood is a staple. Try ceviche, grilled fish, and lobster, often served with rice and plantains.
Traditional Dishes: Sample local favorites like encebollado (a fish stew), tigrillo (a plantain and egg dish), and llapingachos (potato pancakes).
Dining Options
Restaurants: Puerto Ayora features a variety of restaurants, ranging from casual eateries to more upscale dining. Many offer outdoor seating with lovely views.
CafĂŠs and Bars: Enjoy lighter fare at local cafĂŠs, where you can also find delicious coffee and pastries. Bars often serve cocktails made with local fruits.
Sustainability
Fresh and Local: Many restaurants focus on using sustainable seafood and locally sourced ingredients, aligning with conservation efforts in the region.
Tips
Reservations: During peak tourist seasons, it's wise to make reservations, especially at popular spots.
Try Local Beverages: Don’t miss out on local drinks like pisco sour or fresh fruit juices.
Overall, dining in the Galapagos is a wonderful way to experience the culture and natural bounty of the islands!
The most famous dish must be Ceviche.
Ceviche is a refreshing dish made from raw fish or seafood marinated in citrus juices, typically lime or lemon. The acidity from the citrus "cooks" the fish, giving it a tender texture and bright flavor. It’s often mixed with ingredients like onions, cilantro, tomatoes, and chilli peppers for added depth. Popular in many Latin American countries, ceviche is especially cherished in coastal regions for its freshness and vibrant taste, making it a perfect appetizer or light meal.
Try the local lobster, known as Langosta, fresh every day from the pier.
Try the local fish know as Bruja (Witch fish).
Cooked with wine and spices it is really delicious.
Just make sure you eat it before this gets it…..
Tours and Excursions
The Galapagos Islands offer a variety of tours and excursions that cater to different interests and activity levels. Here are some popular options:
Day Tours
Island Hopping: Explore multiple islands in a day, visiting key sites like Santa Cruz, Isabela, and Floreana. These tours often include snorkelling and wildlife watching.
Snorkelling Trips: Join guided snorkelling excursions to spots like Devil’s Crown or Kicker Rock, where you can swim with vibrant marine life, including sea lions and colourful fish.
Multi-Day Cruises
Yacht Cruises: Experience the islands aboard a luxury yacht or catamaran, with itineraries that allow you to visit several islands while enjoying onboard amenities.
Hiking and Nature Tours
Guided Hikes: Explore volcanic landscapes and national parks with knowledgeable guides who share insights about the unique flora and fauna.
Bird watching Tours: Discover the incredible bird life of the Galapagos, including endemic species like the blue-footed booby and the Galapagos finch.
Kayaking and Paddle boarding
Water Sports: Rent kayaks or paddle boards to explore the calm bays and inlets, offering a unique perspective of the islands' stunning coastlines.
Cultural Tours
Local Community Visits: Engage with local communities to learn about their culture and conservation efforts, enhancing your understanding of the Galapagos' heritage.
These tours provide an unforgettable way to experience the natural wonders and diverse ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands!
The Charles Darwin Foundation, established in 1959, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation of the Galapagos Islands and the promotion of scientific research. Located in Puerto Ayora, the foundation plays a crucial role in protecting the unique biodiversity of the islands, which inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. It supports various conservation projects, conducts scientific studies, and provides education and outreach programs to raise awareness about the ecological challenges facing the Galapagos. The foundation collaborates with the Galapagos National Park and other organisations to implement sustainable practices and ensure the preservation of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site for future generations.
Charles Darwin Foundation
El Chato Ranch is a well-known tourist site, it allows you to appreciate the giant tortoises Chelonoidis porteri in their natural environment . Complement this magical expedition with a healthy and delicious lunch in our restaurant.
Rancho El Chato is located in the upper part of Santa Cruz Island, a few kilometers from the Santa Rosa Parish, approximately 45 minutes from Puerto Ayora.
Rancho El Chato
Las Grietas is a breathtaking natural wonder located near Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. This stunning geological formation consists of deep, narrow cracks in the volcanic rock, filled with crystal-clear turquoise water. The hike to Las Grietas is relatively short and easy, taking you through a scenic landscape dotted with cacti and unique flora.
Once you arrive, the serene atmosphere is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply soaking in the beauty of your surroundings. The water is refreshingly cool and offers excellent visibility, making it ideal for spotting colourful fish and marine life.
The best time to visit is early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy a peaceful experience. Bring your snorkelling gear, as the underwater scenery is just as captivating as the views above. Overall, Las Grietas is a must-visit spot for anyone travelling to the Galapagos, offering a blend of adventure, relaxation, and stunning natural beauty. Highly recommended!
You don't need a link for this, just google it and see where it is and a guide will meet you at the entrance. No need to book.
Diving Trips in the Galapagos
Live aboard Dive Trips:
Overview: These multi-day excursions offer divers the chance to explore various dive sites around the islands. Accommodations are typically on a comfortable yacht, allowing for easy access to remote areas.
Highlights: Dive with sea lions, hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and colourful fish. Popular sites include Wolf and Darwin Islands, known for their rich marine biodiversity.
Day Diving Trips:
Overview: Shorter excursions departing from Santa Cruz or San CristĂłbal Island, allowing divers to experience specific sites in a single day.
Highlights: Dive at sites like Gordon Rocks or Kicker Rock, where you can encounter a variety of marine life, including schools of tropical fish and sea turtles.
Snorkelling Tours:
Overview: For those who prefer snorkelling, guided tours often include stops at some of the best underwater spots in the Galapagos.
Highlights: Snorkel with playful sea lions, vibrant marine iguanas, and an array of fish species in clear, warm waters.
Special Diving Trips:
Overview: Some operators offer themed dives, such as photography-focused trips or ecological dives, where divers learn about marine conservation.
Highlights: Opportunities to work with marine biologists or participate in citizen science projects while diving.
Considerations
Experience Level: Diving in the Galapagos can be challenging due to strong currents, so many trips require a certain level of certification and experience.
Best Time to Dive: While diving is possible year-round, the best conditions are generally from June to November, when visibility is optimal and marine life is abundant.
Diving in the Galapagos offers an unforgettable experience, allowing you to witness the incredible underwater ecosystems that make these islands a true paradise for divers.
The best dive centre I have dealt with seems to be Eagle Ray Tours.
As I don't dive I can only recommend who I believe in.
